MERSEYSIDE’S ONLY CHRISTMAS TREE FARM! CHOOSE AND CUT FRESH FROM THE FIELD! Rainfords Catchdale Moss Farm, Eccleston, St Helens, Merseyside WA10 5QG 01744885098 www. Rainfords.co.uk
Have you ever thought what your Christmas tree, decorating style and choice of fairy lights says about you? Just like the clothes you wear or the hairstyle you choose, your christmas tree is a showcase of your own unique taste and style Are you a traditionalist with an abundant green tree at the heart of the home, festooned with warm reds and gold and sentimental handmade decorations, or in direct contrast do you prefer an understated yet stunningly stylish ‘minimalist’ tree symbolising the efficiency and fuss-free existence of its owner? Or is your tree the very epitome of glitz and glamour? We in the UK love to celebrate Christmas. So much so that in 2017, retail sales during the festive season reached over £78 billion and is expected to peak at over 90 billion this year. . The Traditionalist Christmas is an ancient celebration and for those of you who prefer to keep the festivities traditional, a classic approach is often favoured. Warm reds, glittering greens and gilded golds make up the colour palettes of the traditionalist’s household. Attention to detail is key and expressing their festive cheer is at the centre of the home. Many decorations hanging on the traditionalist’s tree are often heirlooms or handmade crafts made by the children at school.
One of the most exciting aspects of Christmas for young and old alike, is putting up the tree and decorating it with all your family treasures. An artificial pine and berry tree makes a big impact for yuletide gatherings and all you’ll need to worry about is who gets to place the angel at the top of the tree. Prefer a blank canvas to begin decorating from? Or perhaps space is an issue? Opt for a plain tree and team with warm LED lights, adding the final touches with some of red, green and gold baubles to create an authentic festive feel. The Glitzy and the Glamorous The glitzy and glamorous type is the person who demands the best in everything. Highly competitive, and opting for metallics and chromes, they strive to out-sparkle their friends, relatives and neighbours. Don’t dare to give a glitzy and glamorous any style advice!
Foraging for winter foliage in the garden is just as much enjoyed as polishing the best silver. Sentimental values are at the core of the traditionalist and what matters most is having the loved-ones close by during this special time. 11
They are Christmas pros who know what they want and have a colour scheme and theme planned, months in advance. Christmas time equals party season and all-out decadence. More is more and for the glitzy and glamorous, bigger means better. Their lavish parties and well-polished homes deserve a touch of magic. With these perfect accompaniments for hosting festive soirees, all you’ll need to add is some pop, fizz and clink! Dreaming of a white Christmas? Or at least one that’s filled with the wow factor? For a contemporary feature which oozes glamour choose a white or grey one. The Minimalist For modern homes or professionals who opt for Scandinavian style but want to retain that hygge feeling, minimalism is the go-to trend at Christmas time. Minimalists opt for a precise, silver-stained, nononsense approach to the festive season. Whilst wanting to take part in the celebrations, the minimalist requires little fuss and saving both precious time and well-earned money is crucial.
would look just as at home in an urban loft apartment as it would within a swish alpine ski lodge, and with the added bonus of no messy light wires to mess up your home haven.
The Attention seeker If ever there’s a time to indulge in colour and light, the festive season is it. The attention seekers’ main objective at Christmas is to indulge in everything and everyone! For gadget lovers and all-round pleasers, choosing the right decorations to reflect this within their homes is important. The attention seeker loves nothing better than to find the latest product or trend and house a talking-point within their homes. Vibrant, multicolour palettes and flashing lights are at the core of the attention seeker’s festive home.
For Christmas with an edge, sometimes less is more. You don’t need to go all out for a real impact and for those of you with little time on your hands, it might be the ideal seasonal option. If you prefer clean lines and a simplistic approach to your festivities, then the Blenheim Frosted Pre-Lit 6ft Tree might just be the tree for you. With a dusting of snow and incorporated white lights, this 12

Liverpool’s latest X Factor hopeful, Anthony Russell says thank you to his family and supporters… Anthony 28, who at the time of going to print was rehearsing for the semi finals, spoke to Amanda Moss Did you ever think you’d get this far? Yes and no, this is my third time on the show so I guess it’s third time lucky. I believe that hard work pays off and I have persevered and not taking no for an answer How would you describe your journey so far? It’s been bittersweet. I have loved it but it’s also been challenging. Louis Tomlinson, my mentor has been amazing, he’s helped fix my problems. I have had set backs like anyone in life and he has been a great support, as have my family. What has been the turning point in your role in the X Factor? I think getting to the semi finals. I am doing something that I absolutely love. What’s simon Cowell like behind the scenes? He’s lovely, a really nice guy with really good advice What’s the hardest thing about being in such a high profile show? I am homesick, I miss Liverpool and I miss my little girl, she’s only 3 How have you coped with the press? I am on a good road and I am surrounded by good people, I have the best support. We all have a history and I have put it behind me now. Some journalists want to remind you of that and make you look bad. It only encouraged haters but they’re my biggest fabs. You can’t be successful without haters and you can’t go into this industry and not expect to have to deal with it.

ANTHONY
What’s your ideal Christmas? Being at home in Liverpool with my family. I am not really that materialistic, I just like to be surrounded by people I love
RUSSELL
What will you do if you win the X Factor? I want to work with charities and give something back. I want to help people if I am in a position to. That’s what it’s all about.

CHRISTMAS IS OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY IN LIVERPOOL LIVERPOOL ONE BRINGS LIGHTS, CHOIRS AND ENTERTAINMENT EVERY WEEKEND UNTIL CHRISTMAS DAY
T
he festive season is now officially underway in Liverpool following one giant spectacular street party. More than 350 performers, choirs and pantomime characters took to the streets of Liverpool ONE to ensure Christmas 2018 started on a high! A light installation, Polaris; Dare to Dream, was unveiled in Chavasse Park. The spectacle was created using 88 colour changing cubes, each weighing 65kgs and containing computercontrolled LED lights. Also adding to the festivities were giant walk –about characters, a piano playing Santa, panto characters from Unity Theatre, Empire Theatre, Everyman and ECHO Arena – and a few celebrities too – including Strictly’s Shirley Ballas. Street theatre shows, extra special festive food and drink sampling and lots of live music, with everything from Liverpool Ukulele Orchestra and a 150voice pop choir, to a saxophonist and string quartet, all adding to the atmosphere of the evening. And as an extra special touch this year, Liverpool ONE has formed a partnership with the NSPCC. In addition to making this the most memorable Christmas for everyone who visits Liverpool ONE this festive season, Liverpool ONE is also hoping to raise funds and awareness for the charity to ensure it lights up Christmas for those children most in need. Donna Howitt, Marketing Director at Liverpool ONE, said: “At Liverpool ONE we really pride ourselves in bringing something new and different for our visitors every time they come – whether they are regulars or firsttimers – and this Christmas we are certainly pulling out all of the stops. “We hope our partnership with the NSPCC will help the children they support to have a happier Christmas 16
and bring a smile to the faces of everyone this festive season. “This year, Liverpool’s Christmas event calendar is filled to the brim with activities in the run up to December 25th. There will literally be fun and festivities popping up around every street corner!” A couple of the firm favourites are back too, including what is believed to be the UK’s largest Christmas tree, towering 30-metres tall on Paradise Street, together with the alpine-inspired caroloke venue, Bar Hutte, located beneath the tree offering live music and festive cocktails. New for this year there is the ultimate selfie spot in the form of an extra special taxi – the festive booth will offer shoppers the opportunity to show off just how Christmassy (or not!) they are …. Are you Liverpool’s most festive family? Or are you the city’s biggest Bah Humbug? Janette Drew, Community Fundraising Manager for the NSPCC added: “We are delighted that Liverpool ONE has chosen to support us in shining a light for every childhood this year. “We hope to encourage as many school and community choirs as possible to show off their talents and entertain Christmas shoppers. Every penny donated will go towards helping to protect children across the Liverpool region. “We know that one in 10 children in the UK have been neglected. And, for a child who’s being neglected, Christmas is yet another cold, dark and lonely time. Hopefully with the support from thousands of local school children, shoppers and diners, we can help to turn their lives around.” NSPCC special edition Christmas tree decorations, pin badges and bracelets will be on sale at the Liverpool ONE Information Centre in Wall Street and also from selected stores across the festive season. Bar Hutte will donate 10p from every soft drink sold during the festive period. Further details about everything which is happening this Christmas at Liverpool ONE are available from: www.liverpoolone.com/christmas Polaris - Dare to Dream – will be open until January 6. It is free and will be lit 24 hours a day with the best views after dusk and at night. Liverpool ONE’s festive programme forms part of the vibrant and exciting offer across the city this Christmas.

Tip: There are some easy ways to eat healthily over the holidays, for example: choose anti-oxidant rich dark chocolate over the super sweet liqueur filled selection; seek vitamin rich foods like sweet potato, spinach and broccoli to keep your energy levels up; limit your alcohol intake, and don’t forget to drink plenty of water.
TOP TIPS FOR A HAPPY, HEALTHY CHRISTMAS FROM DR HILARY JONES
Keep an eye on loved ones Christmas is the perfect opportunity to organise a gathering and catch up with friends and family. It also gives you the chance to ensure your relatives, friends and neighbours, who you may not have seen in a while, are healthy
Christmas is notoriously about indulging and ‘getting merry’ with those close to you – but it’s important to take a step back and think about your health, as well as the health of your family and friends, before the festive season commences. We asked Dr Hilary, GP & health broadcaster, to share his top and happy. Look out for any tips… changes – for example, feelings of lethargy or Avoid the temptations weakness may be an indicator of Did you know, the average type 2 diabetes; physical British person consumes 6,000 unsteadiness may be an calories on Christmas day2, indication of osteoporosis; and three times the average daily being asked to repeat what you amount for women?! Tip: Something as simple as a daily walk has been shown to improve your health. A study by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress found that just 15 minutes of brisk walking a day can add up to seven years to your life4, so why start your daily walks before the Christmas season commences? Alternatively, if you want to stay indoors and avoid the cold weather, get in some exercise by playing games with your younger family members, whether that be a kickaround with a football or an exaggerated version of classic charades!

NEW RESEARCH FROM CONTACT THE ELDERLY HIGHLIGHTS ‘CHRISTMAS ANXIETY’ IS A COMMON FESTIVE ISSUE A new survey reveals that almost half of us feel anxious and worry about making plans for the festive period and leave it to the last minute Contact the Elderly, the only national charity to tackle isolation and loneliness through face to face contact, commissioned the research to highlight the impact of societal pressures on families over Christmas and the impact it can have on older people left to spend Christmas alone. According to the charity, 22% of Liverpool residents get anxious when making Christmas plans despite the fact that 43% make the same festive plans every year. The research also found that only 30% of people in Liverpool have totally confirmed their Christmas plans for this year’s festivities. For over half of Liverpool residents, those plans normally involve staying at home and over a third of all respondents say that Christmas regularly involves visiting older relatives. Over 9% of those surveyed admit to spending Christmas abroad yet only 4% of Liverpool respondents spend the day volunteering or helping out in the local community. The charity released the festive research to coincide with the news that they’ve joined forces with Community Christmas, an organisation which aims to ensure no older person spends Christmas Day alone if they don’t want to. The Community Christmas website lists events taking place across Liverpool that are open to older, vulnerable people in the community who would otherwise be spending Christmas Day alone. One in ten of those surveyed said that they would want to know about events taking place on Christmas
24
Day across Liverpool. No two events are the same and they vary from community Christmas lunches to formal sit-down dinners in community centres like the Frontline Centre in Greater Liverpool. Any event which creates the all-important connections that hold communities together can be a Community Christmas event. Community Christmas is becoming part of Contact the Elderly at a time when event listings on the site are expected to hit an all-time high. When the site was established in 2011 by community transport volunteer Caroline Billington there were just four events listed. The following year this number grew to 74, and in 2017 Community Christmas passed the 500-mark following support from, amongst others, the Big Lottery Fund, Waitrose, and the Jo Cox Foundation. Commenting on the merger, Meryl Davies, Chief Executive of Contact the Elderly, said: “Everyone recognises that Christmas can be a difficult time of year, particularly for people who are isolated or vulnerable. Caroline made it her mission to ensure that anyone who doesn’t want to spend Christmas Day alone doesn’t have to. As an organisation, it is the perfect fit for Contact the Elderly which has been fighting isolation and loneliness among older people for over 50 years through volunteer-led social gatherings. “We want to ensure Community Christmas continues to grow and to encourage people across the UK to think about any older people in their local communities who might not have plans for Christmas Day. This is a chance to tell older people about Community Christmas, or look at the website for them to find their nearest event. We’d love this to spark conversations
between people who might not otherwise speak to each other, whether it’s someone you meet in the street or your next-door neighbour.” Contact the Elderly is renowned for its tea parties which have now helped over 100,000 people since the charity launched in 1965. The older people’s charity is currently supported by nearly 12,000 volunteers including tea party hosts and volunteer drivers to take guests to and from the parties. MCaroline Billington, founder of Community Christmas, said: “I volunteered on Christmas Day almost ten years ago and it changed my life. I knew then that I wanted to focus my time and energy on creating something that would benefit older people for years to come. “Now, Community Christmas is its own entity, it’s growing organically with more and more events and activities being added to the site every day. I think its really important to emphasise that anyone can host an event, it doesn’t have to involve cooking a Christmas feast for 20 people. It could just mean arranging tea and Christmas cake at a local village hall, or singing Christmas carols in the pub. It’s anything that gets people together in the community who otherwise might be alone on Christmas Day.

Want something to smile about in Liverpool this Christmas? Have a laugh at the Hot Water Comedy Club
Set up ten years ago by brothers Paul and Michael Blair, the success of the Hot Water Comedy Club is down to them tearing up the rule book, they believe. Paul said, “We broke the rules of stand up comedy and posted videos on youtube and social media when it was unheard of. We were regularly getting 1 million views on the videos we post at a time when people generally didn’t put content up live. We were groundbreaking and people got to hear of us and we changed how live comedy is done. I do love my job. I sell smiles."
humour in Liverpool? “Absolutely” he said, “We’re often thought of as the hardest place to play a gig as more often than not the audience think they’re funnier than the comedian.” For all listings and shows visit www.hotwatercomedy.co.uk
“
For a side splitting night out, the Hot Water Comedy Club is one of the funniest nights out you will experience. With 20 shows a week across seven nights, in two venues around town, the Club has risen to be one of the hottest comedy spots in the UK and has launched the careers of many comedians, most recently Paul Smith who did a sell out gig at The Echo Arena for 7500 people. Due to the success of this one night event they won an Echo Arena Amplifier Award for making people laugh.
I do love my job. I sell smiles
“
They have an open mic night every Sunday where professional comics take to the stage alongside new talent testing their materiel for the first time. It’s still one of their most popular nights of the week Does Paul think we have our own sense of 29
Donate to Nugent's Christmas Appeal this year - and help us help people avoid homelessness! Homelessness is not just about having not having a roof over your head, the long term impact on mental and physical heath can make it harder for people to find support, and is having a major impact on our health care services. Benefit cuts have left poorer tenants unable to pay the rent. In particular, the four-year freeze on housing benefit in the private rented sector, called local housing allowance, is pushing people into homelessness. Homelessness affects people across society, in different situations and from all walks of life: #FamiliesandHomelessness • 150 families are made homeless in Britain every day. • There are over 125,000 homeless children living in Britain today. #Retiredandhomeless • In the last year, 2,520 people aged 60 and over were accepted as homeless • Rise of 40% in the last five years, and the highest number for over a decade. #youngandHomeless • 4981 young people, 16 – 24 homeless • 92% said delayed
payments under Universal Credit were having an impact #Workingandhomeless • 55% of homeless families trapped in temporary accommodation are actually working • More than 33,000 homeless families are holding down a job, despite having nowhere stable to live, up by 73% since 2013! During winter, we need to be conscious of the individuals shivering in doorways, and of the families whose Christmas will be spent in a cramped temporary accommodation or hostel room with their children. Our Housing Support Unit (HSU) works with partners across the city to help homeless people and those in crisis. Through our New Beginnings Project, we help people across the city region by providing temporary accommodation, practical support and advice, which enables people to get back on their feet, live independently and move on to their own permanent tenancy. Whilst the staffing and support elements of this service are funded, there is a gap and an increasingly unmet need in the practical support that we can provide. People often come to us with nothing, so our HSU team provide starter packs of essential equipment to help them transition into
temporary accommodation and permanent residence. Our Housing Support Unit (HSU) works with partners across the city to help homeless people and those in crisis through our New Beginnings Project. Your Support Matters Our Christmas Appeal this year will raise funds to support our homeless projects and Christmas crisis fund. Your donation will help with the basic needs of someone facing homelessness: • £100 will pay for a full starter pack for someone entering our accommodation, or the purchase of white goods such a fridge or washing machine • £40 will pay for a full set of bedding (duvet pillows and sheets) • £20 will pay for a full set of pans • £10 will pay for a toaster and kettle • £5 will pay for a set of cutlery To donate to this year’s Christmas Appeal in aid of our New Beginnings service go to: https://www.wearenugent.o rg/andhomeless/ For more information contact Nugent’s Fundraising team on 0151 261 2000.

RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SASSY MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO s omebody tell me where 2018
has gone as its flown by so quickly. I can’t believe panto season is here and I couldn’t miss the opportunity to open the historical Lewis’s grotto which thanks to City Attractions is open in St Johns Market again – it’s the grotto that brings back so many memories of my Nan taking me to and Christmas wouldn’t be the same without it. My beautiful daughter Melodie has now become a teenager .. no matter what is going on in my life – this child makes me smile every day so I couldn’t have been happier as a birthday surprise to take her to London to see her favourite artist Ed Sheeran having won tickets to an intimate gig in Islington – he was incredible and watching her face as she sang along to every word of every song – every mums dream to see their child in awe of something was priceless. Another event which is certainly one of the highlights of the year and made me very proud to be part of was Radio City receiving Freedom of the City and we celebrated with the official Legends dinner in
32
November at the Hilton. To have grown up listening to the station and be part of it for 20 years makes me feel so privileged and I have worked with so many incredible people who are now lifelong friends – I feel truly blessed. 2019 is going to bring another change to my life .. having recently found out that from January Radio City 2 will no longer exist and it will become a national station “Greatest Hits Radio” and they are going to use Rossie and I as the flagship breakfast show from Liverpool which is something I am so excited and I’ll be honest a little nervous of although it’s such a great opportunity for the whole of the country once again to realise how fabulous the people of Liverpool are. There have been so many highlights this year.. so many amazing events like The Giant Spectacular, hosting events such as The Lifestyle Awards, Liverpool Fashion Week, Rock n Roll marathon , numerous events for Everton to name but a few. My brother Peter and his now husband Chris tying the knot in Vegas in March. I’ve had the pleasure of appearing in fabulous pantos at The Epstein with Lee Kelly and taking on directing the talented youngsters at LHK Entertainments. I still consider myself to be so very lucky to be doing what I love as a job and I will never forget that. I’m also not afraid of hard work and most weeks consist of 7 days working sometimes 20 hour days but I’ve come through so much over the last 5 years and I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel. Next year my son Michael will take his GCSEs so goodness knows what the future will hold for him .. but as long as he tries his hardest is all I will ever ask of him or Melodie. I’m going to be enjoying a Christmas at home with the family between pantos as mum hasn’t been in the best of health and letting the new year in with a gig at Champs in Ainsdale and being with my family and friends and looking forward to another exciting year! Merry Christmas everyone and here’s to a happy successful 201

Games consoles and mobile phones are 2018’s most requested children’s Christmas presents, meaning the average parent will spend £119.45 per child compared to £69.24 a generation ago. With less disposable income, young families are twice as likely to already be saving for Christmas now (59%) than 10 years ago (33%). Research has revealed that two-thirds of children under 10 years old still believe in Santa and a tenth will be contacting him on social media rather than writing a letter this year. Nationwide spending on children’s presents has increased by £2.68bn in a generation – the equivalent of £204m considering inflation* The average Brit will spend £119.45 per child on presents this Christmas – 1 in 4 will spend more than £200! Young families are twice as likely to already be saving for Christmas now than 10 years ago Kids are set to spend £27.4m more on presents for Dad than Mum – most Mums would rather receive handmade gifts

Two-thirds of children under 10 years old still believe in Santa – one in ten contact Santa on social media rather than writing a letter VoucherCodes, the leading savings site, surveyed 2,000 people across the country to discover the nation’s Christmas spending habits and how this has changed from generation to generation. The research also revealed three generations’ of favourite Christmas presents to gift and receive. With a quarter of parents spending over £200 on Christmas presents per child, compared to just 6% a generation ago, the research has highlighted the financial pressures that families are now under to provide a special Christmas for their kids. This is particularly true for parents under the age of 35, with three out of five admitting they’re saving money for Christmas by mid-November in contrast to just a third at the same time a decade ago. With so much money being spent, it’s important that parents are invested in what they’re purchasing. Despite this,
a third admit they buy Christmas gifts without knowing if their children would actually want them and a quarter confess they’ve been guilty of buying rubbish presents because they left it too late to go shopping. This is perhaps best explained in the huge shift in priorities between what children are looking for now compared to when parents were anxiously looking under the Christmas tree. Indeed, two out of five children now want to find a games console in their stocking, while a third also ask for a mobile phone and an iPad.

Jack and the Beanstalk, billed as Liverpool’s biggest panto, is set to be a ‘Strictly’ sensational treat for all the family. Brought to you by the world’s biggest pantomime producer, Qdos Entertainment, who’ve promised audiences a panto packed full of spectacular special effects including an exciting interactive 3D scene and with laugh out loud comedy, live music and one giant beanstalk - it’s a festive treat you definitely won’t want to miss! The Liverpool Empire’s Theatre Director, Diane Belding said, “After delivering the most spectacular pantomime in Liverpool last year, we are thrilled that Qdos Entertainment are returning to the Empire again for 2018’s Panto season. Strictly Come Dancing is one of the most popular programmes on television so who better to star in Liverpool’s best pantomime than judge, Shirley Ballas. I’m sure Empire audiences will be as excited as we are to see Shirley returning home to Merseyside and performing live on the Empire stage. John Evans was a firm favourite last year so we’re thrilled he’s returning. He and Shirley are sure to deliver a performance that’s a 10!”
Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum, a giant of a panto comes to
Liverpool this Christmas, starring Merseyside’s own dancing sensation Shirley Ballas as Mother Nature and comic John Evans as Simple Simon, back by popular demand after delighting audiences as Buttons in last year’s panto.

EXsELLENCE DOuBLE WIN Liverpool based field marketing company Exsellence has won two leading industry awards in the company’s first 12 months of trading. The retail sales specialists scooped Sales Team of the Year at the Retail Industry Awards 2018. They quickly followed this by winning in the category of Most Effective In-Store Marketing at the Field Marketing Awards in October. Established in 2017, Exsellence specialises in field marketing on behalf of consumer brands. The team is responsible for engaging with retail stores; driving sales and managing accounts for worldwide biscuit and confectionery manufacturer Pladis and a number of other customers. Their primary focus is on maximising sales for both the brands and the retailers. It is for their work in this area, on behalf of Pladis that they have become double award winners. By winning these two prestigious awards, Exsellence has proved that the company really does live up to its name. In September, the Excellence team attended Grosvenor House Hotel in London to be honoured alongside household names such as Asda, Lidl, Aldi and Iceland at the Retail Industry Awards 2018. October found the team back in London, on stage at Troxy, accepting their prize at the Field Marketing Awards. Huw Davies, managing director of Exsellence, said: I’m so pleased and proud to have had the hard work of the Exsellence team recognised in this way. When I established the company last year it was with the intention to reimagine the way our customers approach field sales; to give them a better option. Since then, independent measurement has told us that the stores we manage for Pladis are outperforming like-for-like stores by 28% on average, and in some individual cases by as much as 56%. “I was honoured to collect these awards on behalf of the whole Excellence team and look forward to our relationship with Pladis going from strength to strength in year two of business.”

C H R I S T M A S I C E F E S T I VA L R E T U R N S T O L I V E R P O O L WAT E R F R O N T F O R 2 0 1 8 This winter everyone’s favourite enchanting Christmas Ice Festival returns for another year, as Liverpool’s iconic Pier Head is transformed into a winter wonderland.
For even faster thrills, the highspeed 30-metre ice run – back with three lanes - is set to be the city’s most exhilarating festive ride as racers hurtle down from six-metres above the festival site.
This is the third year for the festival at its iconic waterfront location, featuring Liverpool’s biggest ever ice slide and a huge covered outdoor rink giving skaters the chance to glide in style with a stunning backdrop of the world famous Three Graces.
The Ice Jet ride also makes a return following its Liverpool debut in 2017. The only one of its kind in the UK, it features a fantastic sound and light show, giving festivalgoers the ride of their life.
Suited for all ages and abilities, from beginners to experts, the rink has a canopy to keep everyone dry whatever the weather and there are plenty of penguin skate aids available to help young skaters stay steady on their blades.
Liverpool Christmas Ice Festival launched on November 10th and runs through Christmas and New Year until January 6th. Closed Christmas Day. For further details, visit www.icefestivalliverpool.co.uk
Visitors are also able to enjoy the full family-friendly festival experience with funfair rides for children and adults, and pop-up food and drink stalls serving après skate specialities including sizzling traditional German bratwurst, hot roast rolls, crepes, mulled wine and hot chocolate.

O ur goal, and the MAKING A DIRECT
DIFFERENCE plan, is to provide every UK school with a Teacher Training Programme that will make a DIRECT difference with Bullying & mental health issues. Already, with some local awareness, we have had individuals Directly Sponsor EVERY school in Blackpool & Fylde............ Over 80 schools in the FY postcode. It's direct, transparent, and it's accountable.............. Some people have directly sponsored their old school that they went to as a child. Some have sponsored their children's, or grandchildren's school that they attend. We have had local business people who have sponsored MULTIPLE schools, simply because they want to be part of Making A Direct Difference for our children's mental well-being, which will ultimately have a positive impact on their community. Each school programme only costs ÂŁ100, and gives all the teachers & staff unlimited access to the training. They will also receive ongoing training and updates. You can donate any amount, publicly or anonymously at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/madda boutbullying. We will contact the headteacher and school governors directly, with all the details of their programme and inform them that you are their direct sponsor. Your name (and company if you wish) will forever leave a lasting Legacy of Making A Direct Difference for that school and its children. As of NOW, we already have 2 SCHOOLS SPONSORED directly in Liverpool. The TARGET is just ÂŁ100 at a time, until we have EVERY SCHOOL in the UK Directly Sponsored...... Winners. 47

hosting assemblies dedicated to the awareness of knife crime and how young people can help prevent themselves from becoming victims of knife crime whilst discouraging them from considering carrying a knife. Working with partners at Merseyside Police, a mobile knife arch will be brought to these assemblies to familiarise young people with how the arches work and what they look like. The knife arch is used to show one of the ways that officers tackle knife crime. Senior Youth Worker in the city, Alan Walsh who runs the Anfield boxing club, will be delivering the sessions. The assemblies will offer a holistic approach to knife crime and highlight some of the known causes of knife culture and carefully discuss the issues, raising the dangers of carrying a knife whilst demonstrating the effect on everyone’s lives in the event of a knife related incident. Cabinet member for Communities and Partnerships, Cllr Liz Parsons said; “it’s important that we inform the young people of Liverpool about the impacts of knife crime and how not to become a victim. Bringing the knife arches into school assemblies is a great way to introduce young people to the look and feel of arches, so should they encounter them in their day to day lives, there will be a sense of familiarity about them and not fear. We want every young person in the city to know how they can avoid slipping into a lifestyle that promotes knife culture.” Liverpool Association of Secondary Heads representative David Hayes said, “This is not about any one 48
school having an issue with knife crime, it’s a collective approach across the whole city as we recognise that schools have a key role in helping to address knife crime.” Merseyside Police Superintendent Mark Wiggins, said “The aim of these assemblies is to inform the young people of Liverpool that if they make certain life choices, their chances of becoming a victim of knife crime or ruining their lives could increase. “If they are caught with and convicted of a knife crime offence they face being deprived of their liberty, but the consequences for them and their loved ones can be far worse due to the increased risk
of physical harm both to themselves and to others if they choose to carry a knife. “Secondary schools across Liverpool approached us to ask how they can assist in reducing knife crime and we recognise their importance in getting the message across. “No one school suffers from this issue, so they have come together with us to deliver the knife crime sessions so young people understand the negative impact carrying a knife can have. It’s really important that everybody knows how and who to contact if they suspect somebody of carrying a knife and to be strong enough to do so. “

Love Aesthetics' ethos has always been about providing the highest quality clinical, evidence based procedures at a reasonable price. After dedicating the last five years working fully in aesthetics I have found the best way to do this is by having a purpose built clinic at my home to reduce overheads. Due to the ever growing clientele we have now located to a larger home based premises to accommodate our growing needs. We are still based in West Derby and prices remain the same as does flexibility and the highest clinical care.

EDI TOR’ S LAST WORD Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you all! It’s the most loveliest time of the year surrounded by my gorgeous brood, I can’t believe my eldest child, saxon, is 18 years old this month, where has the time gone?
Lifestyle www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk @amandalifestyle
It is of course a time of reflection, I have had a wonderful year professional and personally. I’ve run four networking lunches, three awards nights, three fashion shows plus two retreats. I’ve published my book, six, in paperback, done some motivational speaking events and I’ve travelled abroad eight times this year, I think it’s an all time record for me, but as we’re only on this earth a short while I am making sure I see as much of it as I can, especially as the kids are getting older and we’re all slowly gaining our independence. I have a lot to be grateful for. A warm home in winter, a full fridge of food, beautiful, healthy children and a husband who supports me and my crazy ideas and a business that’s growing as fast as my waistline on Boxing Day. It’s hard not to go mad at this wonderful time of the year and spend, spend, spend, as the high streets and online stores want us to, but there’s more to December than just Christmas and presents and let’s be honest, it’s just one day of craziness isn’t it. Kids are just as happy with a selection box and a new pair of pjs to snuggle in. For me, mindfulness is ever so important and my vision board is glowing with future opportunity awaiting around the corner. Talking of which, the nominations close for the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards at the end of the month. This is an excellent way for you as a business and professional person to promote yourself. Why would you not want to talk about how great your products and services are? If you don’t believe in them how do you expect others to. Go to www.liverpoollifestyleawards.co.uk I’d like to thank all our lovely readers and advertisers for your ongoing support, making Lifestyle magazine the most read independent magazine in the region and wish you the happiest of holidays filled with abundance and good health. May your holidays sparkle as much as you do.
Regards
Amanda x
