Can’t stop the Rock He’s handsome, talented, officially the hottest star in Hollywood, and has achieved all he set out to do; but if you think Dwayne Johnson is ready to throw in the towel, think again. dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has an indomitable spirit. He's the epitome of the larger-thanlife personality, and a man who tries to lift everyone around him with a combination of power-packed energy and unrelenting optimism. Though given the fact he’s currently riding the crest of a tidal of wave of success, it would be more surprising if he weren’t upbeat and full of enthusiasm.

Regardless, last year marked a blockbuster trifecta for the handsome star. Having helped drive Fast & Furious 8 to box office success in the spring, he finished the year with hugely popular Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle, and while the Baywatch remake may have failed to live up to expectations (proving that even The Rock isn’t perfect!) he was still ranked by Forbes as the world's highest-paid actor with earnings of $64.5million in 2017 alone. The bottom line? You just can’t keep this former wrestler down. Which begs the question, does the indefatigable Johnson EVER have a bad day? “Of course! We all have bad days but when I

come to work, I try to put my best foot forward. There's a lot of people who depend on me and I feel like a lot of the work that I do, starts with me,” he says. “Inevitably, I am galvanising a lot of people and bringing them together. That, in itself, will give enough motivation to put your best foot forward and try to work with a smile. Also, I think it's in my personality,” explains Johnson, finishing with a flash of those perfect teeth. In many ways, the exuberant 45year-old is the ideal model of what every Hollywood actor aspires to be. His experience as a professional athlete has taught him great discipline both physically and mentally, allowing him to keep calm and focused even in the tumultuous entertainment industry. Taking full responsibly for his actions, you’re unlikely to see the California native throw a hissy fit on set, admitting that if he ever does get hot under the collar, his solution is to take a little time out and ‘find a quiet space’. “I just reset myself and be calm. I’ll do a little meditating, or I’ll try to figure out exactly what the problem is and what is bugging me,” he explains. Having recently announced that he and girlfriend of 12 years, Lauren Hashian, are expecting a baby - to join their two-year-old girl, Jasmine, and Johnson’s 15year-old daughter Simone from his marriage to his ex-wife and childhood sweetheart dany garcia – the high-octane hero is clearly flourishing in both his personal and professional life. Such achievements might make a mere mortal seek a well-earned break, but Johnson is far from

finished. This spring he will star in monster action flick Rampage, for which he is also executive producer, and he has a host of new film projects in the pipeline including a second San Andreas earthquake movie. Clearly, were Johnson not an actor, he could easily earn a living as a motivational speaker, and offers his greatest tip for staying inspired and overcoming adversity: “You've got to find a purpose in life. Whatever it is, go out and work your butt off and don't ever stop. In my case, sports and, later on, bodybuilding, were the things that helped me set goals for myself and build my self-esteem.” despite his impressive career, it’s worth remembering that things could have been very different for the cinema titan, who originally had his heart set on a career in American Football. Hampered by injury, he was forced to find another path, deciding to follow grandfather Peter maivia and father Rocky Johnson into the wresting ring. It is film however, that truly makes his heart sing, and as he reveals why he is more determined than ever, Johnson is visibly buzzing with an almost childlike glee. “I want to bring a lot of joy and entertainment to people who are paying their money and expect their money's worth. I work very hard on my movies and, as a producer, I also try to involve myself in the entire process, ensuring that people who see my movies are going to leave the theatre feeling happy and entertained. “That's what it's all about for me.”

projections illuminate the largest Chinese Arch outside of mainland China, as well as the Black E, and the Arch accommodation building. The projections, created by illuminos will tell the story of Jingwei, the ancient and mythical bird in Jingwei; Legacy. The projections be an experience of light and sound, tell a 12 minute story matched with a specially commissioned soundtrack created by Jah Wobble and Pagoda Arts. This will run for 1 hour from 7.30pm until 8.30pm on Saturday on Sunday. Sunday’s celebrations will begin at 11.30am with traditional street theatre parades. One parade will be led by the Lion & dragon, setting off from the Black-E on great george Street. Another led by the Unicorn, will set off from Nelson Street. There will be a fun fair on great george Street as well as craft and food stalls, selling delicious, authentic Chinese cuisine and 8

crafted toys and artefacts. Sunday will also see one 12minute projection show from 6.30pm, and close with a pyrotechnics finale off the BlackE building. 8 February will see the launch of China dream a city-wide celebration, with key iconic buildings in the city including St george’s Hall, Cunard Building, and Town Hall, lighting up in red, symbolising good fortune & joy. There will also be thousands of Chinese lanterns decorating various streets and spaces in the city. Chinese New Year 2018 is also part of China dream: Contemporary Chinese Arts x Liverpool, a 9-month season of Chinese contemporary arts & culture, showcasing new and emerging art from leading Chinese artists, to run alongside the Terracotta Warriors’ residency at the World museum Liverpool, all launching on 8 February, running until October.

Chapter 2 (Jun – August) A celebration of the best of modern Chinese culture, led by leading Shanghai-based artists with a focus on our sister city, Shanghai, ahead of the 20th anniversary of the twinning of cities in 2019.

Liverpool’s China's First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors exhibition will open at the city’s World museum on Friday 9 February. more than 180 spectacular artefacts from museums across

Shaanxi Province in North West China - 5,000 miles from Liverpool - will take part in the landmark exhibition, running for eight months until 28 October 2018. Spanning almost 1,000 years, the exhibition sheds light on the formative years of the Chinese nation, from the bitter struggles of warring states in the 8th century BC to the rise of the Qin State and the unification of China by the First Emperor in 221 BC, concluding with the peace and prosperity of the Han dynasty (206 BC to 220 Ad). david Fleming, director of National museums Liverpool, said: “This is a tremendous coup, not just for Liverpool, but for the whole of the UK. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Tell us about your job role Where do I start as I wear so many different hats these days. I suppose as well as being responsible for all new business that comes in I'm also the person who decides the creative for the client. I will then sometimes meet the client to present the work and complete the project. After that is all approved I will get involved in print or whatever media solution the client requires. Lastly the dreaded chasing of outstanding Invoices, so I'm kept quite busy these days. What makes a successful graphic designer? Firstly and most importantly you need to listen to the client, I've seen so much time wasted when a so called designer has gone off on one and although it may look pleasing it does not answer the brief at all. Also you need to think differently and give options otherwise anybody will have a go, and they usually do with some horrendous results.

Graphic design has evolved with so many businesses being online, how have you had to adapt? media solutions are changing all the time and are quite specialised at times. I am basically from a design and print background and have experts around me that advise on websites etc. Tell us about a typical day A typical day is different every single day I'm glad to say so I never get bored. The first thing I try to do is go through and answer as many emails as possible before the phone starts. I then decide what is the most urgent project to sort out (Which client frightens me most haha). Usually while I'm doing this other projects are coming in and I'm starting to think about them as well. I might have to get some print quotes along the way and then place the completed job with the printer. I've downed about three cups of tea by now and I might need to go and see a client, which gives me a backlog when I get back and another late night. There's always more emails to answer and maybe amendments to something that was done earlier. Hopefully the day has had no major panics and I can look forward to tomorrow. What is your proudest achievement? Without a doubt, outside of work, is having two wonderful children, one of each, who are an absolute credit. They are like chalk and cheese but are the most caring individuals you could wish to meet. In my career I'm very proud to boast that from nothing I've created quite a few jobs for people and a fair number of them have gone on to start their own successful companies, I get a buzz from that.

What advice would you give your younger self? Haha, is that before 'Wine,women and fast cars'. No joking apart, I think I would tell myself to carefully look at all the opportunities that are offered to you before making a hasty decision. I've taken the wrong road a couple of times when all seemed wonderful on the table. I would certainly look hard into going into a partnership again. I would rather succeed or fail by my own merits now. How do you deal with difficult clients? Selected hearing! Only joking all my clients are perfect. What is your best design work to date? I'd like to think it was my last project as I'm always trying to improve and produce something better. It's very hard to pick anything as design work is very subjective and I think everything I do is wonderful haha. What makes you happy? Seeing other people around me happy especially family and friends. How do you switch off? I find this aspect of life very difficult as I've been known to wake up at night and scribble down an idea, much to my wifes amusement. Besides that I think the best way I switch off is going to the Snowdon area and scrambling up a mountain or two, the views are to die for.

Choice is a great thing ... I love all the options I have when I buy something as simple as a cup of coffee ... I’ve got both a drive through Starbucks and drive a drive through Costa within a mile of my house. The choice of big brands I had at Cheshire Oaks in december was mind blowing ... I think I got 80% of my presents in one long (very long) day. For the remaining 20% I checked out the Black Friday offers ... all the Christmas stuff sorted in a few clicks. does anyone understand how Black Friday can last more than one day? All I know is Happy Hour can last more than an hour so I use that analogy to keep me sane! In the new year I was enticed into the shops by the January sales ... in truth I didn’t need much enticing ... all these choices at even cheaper prices. Although I couldn’t quite work out if the January Sales prices were cheaper than the Black Friday prices. And get this ... in the on-line January sales I can choose whether to have it delivered tomorrow or the next day after that ... or to a locker at my local Sports Centre. 22

Having so much choice is actually hard work and not always as much fun as I expected it to be ... when do we get chance to take a break from all this choice? This long list of what we can have ... or should I say have more of. Well it just so happens that a new year is actually a great time to take stock ... I don’t just mean just the traditional stuff like whether to diet or not ... or stop smoking ... or give up the drink. I mean take stock of the BIg stuff. By the way the BIg stuff usually takes a bit of time, a bit of serious thinking time and a fair amount of concentration. There won’t be a list to select from and your choices probably won’t be delivered the next day. The BIg stuff is about you .... is my career going to plan, do I even have a plan? This doesn’t mean look for another job, it means way up the pro’s and cons. Is there something I could do at work that would make me better at what I do ... which may get me noticed ... and who knows, may get me promoted. But the BIg stuff isn’t just about work and money ... it could be about

how do you find more time in this always-on world. That’s the holy grail for most people. So maybe the BIg stuff is about dropping a few things you don’t enjoy or don’t need to do ... so that you create time for yourself. The 21st century has given us so much choice and given us so many options that sometimes we don’t take a minute and ask if this is what we want? I think we sometimes look in the wrong place. Instead of looking at all the choices we are presented with maybe we just have a look at what we really want ... rather than picking from a shopping list that we are force-fed with, maybe we should create our own agenda. Be active not passive. By the way I’ve seen a nice pair of trainers in Sports direct that I’ll probably buy this weekend ... so once you’ve given some time to your own BIg stuff you can get back onto the merry-go-round called life. Before I know it I’ll be on sleep countdown for Christmas 2018… although to be fair – that normally starts for me in may! So Panto is over and done with for another year (Oh yes it is!) – I can honestly say despite the gruelling schedule of 52 shows in 3 weeks – I have never worked with such an amazing cast and crew – loved being in the heart of town at The Epstein – and to finally work with my good friend Lee Kelly for the first time – and I’m quite sure it won’t be the last! It’s an amazing theatre – in fact where I trained at Elliott Clarke when it was The Neptune and despite rumours over Christmas – the theatre is still very much up and running with a number of exciting shows there this year – including LHK Productions Jack & the Beanstalk at Easter with Ray Quinn then Snow White & the 7 dwarfs at Christmas! I have often compared myself to the Catherine Tate character, amazingly called “Claire” .. who is often approached to do a number of things like being a foreign interpreter, or entering herself into a tennis tournament when she’s never lifted a racquet, her

famous phrase is “I can do that” then just throws herself into it… well, I’ve had another one of those moments! As well as running LHK Productions Lee Kelly also had LHK Entertainments which is absolutely overflowing with talented youngsters – some of whom were in Peter Pan at Christmas. I was asked to go and do a guest class at one of the theatre workshops, which I loved doing – I qualified to teach drama whilst at Elliott Clarke and taught on a Saturday morning for many years – I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it and loved every second! As a result – I have now found myself directing their shows at The Epstein … mamma mia/Shrek in march and Sister Act/matilda in July. Really looking forward to this new challenge! As well as this new project … I have actually found the love of my life already this year … in the form of … Hugh Jackman! If you haven’t seen The greatest Showman with Hugh’s portrayal of Barnum – then I suggest you go and see it immediately! At the time of print I have already been the cinema 3 times to see it … and no doubt that will have quadrupled before the end of the month. It is one of the best soundtracks I have heard in a long time – with “This is me” rightly winning a golden globe for Best Original Song. I teamed up with my old partner in Crime Jay Hynd on Blue monday for an evening for Alder Hey at Fazenda ... where the Chefs from the hospital had a “cook off” with the Surgeons! It was a fabulous evening with over £17000 raised … plus the lovely Shirley Ballas from Strictly, Beth Tweddle and many Hollyoaks stars were there to help on the evening ... Shirley even kindly donated a dress and tickets to next year’s Strictly to the Auction. I was stunned and rather humbled to receive a nomination for the 2nd year running for a Liverpool Lifestyle Award for Social media Influencer of the year and would like to thank everyone who nominated me and who have voted so far. I am also delighted to

announce that I will be hosting the event on Saturday 3rd march at The Liner Hotel which I am really looking forward to – I have attended many of the Lifestyle awards over the years and to be asked by Amanda to compere the evening is an absolute privilege. There are so many local businesses that often go unnoticed or unrecognised and the Lifestyle Awards change all that. However one of my best friends dale Roberts is in the same category as me so that has been causing some friendly rivalry on social media in itself! For those who know me, I am not really a “foodie” or one of those people who raves about going out for meals… however … last month changed all of that! I was invited to a taster evening at the brand new Hickory’s Smokehouse in Southport . They kindly invited my family and I – and when I say I have never seen so much food on a table in my life I’m not exaggerating! Even as a vegetarian – the choices were endless and the different flavoured lemonades and milkshakes (Even had dairy free ones!) … I will definitely be going back – and certainly trying the breakfast menu too. So that’s been the start to my year so far and we’re already in February, wow, I know that this looks like another exciting year ahead!

of winter, the skies are grey, cold rain hits our faces as we exit our homes to battle our way through howling winds to get to destinations we really do not want to go to! Well maybe that’s a slight exaggeration. But it is a gloomy month. We are recovering financially and physically after our over indulgences over our favourite time Christmas, where happiness starts blooming around October and stays with us until that final hangover around the 2nd Of January. We’ve recovered from dry January and say smugly that everything will be fine. Are you keeping up your resolutions? Are you still motivated and keeping fit? Are you keeping up with your plan to drop the two stone that has just appeared over the festive season? It’s funny how we we can convince ourselves that forgetting the Slimming World Syns is actually allowed. We give ourselves “Barley”, a fabulous Liverpool expression of giving yourself exemption from “being good” ,because it’s a self allowance. Yeah, we give ourselves 34

Oh the joy of Christmas, the time of goodwill to all men and women, except after a skin full of Stella turns you into a violent, nasty person. Until that last bottle of Prosecco assisted you, in losing your phone and your self respect as you stumble back home at 4 am, or worse doing the walk of shame later the following day… Ahhh the walk of shame, hey no one is judging here, we judge ourselves well enough without, moi, the new column writer joining in. (That’s for next month ha!☺). I’m no spring chicken, I am 57 in April this year, I have lived a bit too but I would like to share some of my older and wiser wisdom with you in this column as the months go on. It will be a read for every age group and gender. And if you have met me you will know that I am all about embracing positivity and happiness. I am going to show you how you love yourself a little bit more. So let’s raise a glass of … green blended juice to February and thank goodness we have lost a stone in January albeit due to Aussie Flu rather than our resolutions and dry and Vegan January. Here’s to the daffodils and spring flowers, now peeping

through our flower beds. Here’s to being healthier and happier and thinking good thoughts. It’s time that we knew a secret.. and that is that to feel happier in life we need to raise our energy levels all year round because it’s not what we do in winter that makes us feel fatter, unfit and unhealthy, but it is the choices we make all year round. So bin resolutions and let’s get into a better lifestyle all the time. We can flip our thoughts right the way round and start believing in ourselves, we can know that we make good choices with food and drinks, we can get ourselves into better habits of exercise and we can take out negativity and replace it with a more vibrant, summery positive mental attitude. So get your last years resolution juicer or nutribullet out of the cupboard and get some spinach in your system. drop the sugar (It’s so addictive) and cut down on the school night drinking. make some small changes. get Active. move it. Walking is the easiest way to start your fitness level improvement. Or join the gym and get doing some weights.

Twenty five years ago a

young Austrian girl Caroline Crystle was working as an au pair in merseyside. She had heard about auditions for the musical ‘Her Benny’ which were to be staged at The Empire Theatre in Liverpool. A talented singer and actress and with a desire to make friends and improve her English, she went along. To her delight she won a place in the company. That young lady now lives in New York, yet she heard of the special 25th Anniversary of the show in Liverpool and vowed that she and her husband must go and see it. Together with many of the other cast from that time she will share in the celebratory reunion that is to be held at The Royal Court during the run. She will notice some changes because like all musicals they evolve. Some new songs have

Her Benny is an emotive tale of a young boy’s struggle to survive the harsh streets of Liverpool during the cruelty and injustice o the Victorian era. The story centres on the life and times of Benny Bates and his waif like sister Nell. With a drunkard for a father and a brutish stepmother, the young pair are forced to earn a crust by selling matches and carrying bags for the rich of the 1880’s on the Liverpool docks. Fleeing the violence of their broken home they are taken in by kindly nightwatchman Joe Wragg and his wife Sally and for a while live like a proper family. Although happy for a time, tragedy strikes when little Nell falls ill and Benny is accused of a crime he didn’t commit. It’s not all serious though, far from it. There are lots of laughs along the way as well as some high energy dance numbers, catchy sing along tunes and pacy numbers mixed in with the more stirring ballads. The cast includes John mcgrellis who has appeared in several productions in the city’s theatres and more recently starred as dI martin Leahy in the widely acclaimed series ‘Little Boy Blue’ and the

fabulous Lindzi germain, one of The Royal Court’s regulars. She is a wonderful all rounder who has starred in stage plays, farces, gritty dramas and musical theatre and most recently appeared as Angela gabriel in The Royal Court’s sell out Christmas production ‘The Scouse Nativity’. Together with Janet Cowley ex Phantom of the Opera and Elliott Hanna who played the leading role of Billy Elliot in the West End production at the Victoria Palace Theatre London, they join a fantastic professional cast drawn primarily from the merseyside area and young performers who successfully came through the challenging audition process held at The Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool. According to Anne dalton, the director, writer and producer of the musical “I think this is the best production I’ve ever staged. stand-up for 20 years now. As he prepares to launch himself upon the nation with another touring show, the Irish comic is firmly of a belief that the current breed of parents spoil their kids rotten whether it’s to do with the ever-increasing size of garden trampolines, or his own kids’ demand for elderflower cordial. “my dad wasn’t a bad dad, he was just a 1970s dad. If I could never see my children ever again from this moment on, and I’ve already done more parenting then he did in my entire life. But, of course, I made a conscious decision that I was going to be an awesome dad. my wife will come back with tales from her friends of how awful their husbands are and she’ll see me smiling and say ‘alright, stop congratulating yourself just because such and such can’t be left alone with their children for two minutes’.” In his new touring show, the perfectly-titled Spoiler Alert, Ed compares and contrasts the oldschool child-rearing days with 21st century methods and suggests that there are different ways to learn how to be a mum or dad. “I grew up in what I would call an aspirational

household in that my parents bettered themselves over the course of my childhood. my mother was a radiographer and ended up a lecturer in radiography, while my dad was a sheet metal worker and went up to a supervisory role. I’d still say that you are expected to do a lot more parenting than our parents did and that’s a weird thing because you tend to think that your parents are where you learned parenting from. But you don’t, really, it’s more that you look around you to see what’s going on with other parents.” For the show Ed extends his analysis on the culture of entitlement to look at areas where we could perhaps do with being spoiled a little bit more. “Where I think we’re not acting spoiled enough is in the political arena. We have a tendency to accept what’s happening and that’s where we should be acting more entitled: we are literally entitled to the government we want. We’re spoiled in all these little ways, but not spoiled enough.”

As well as stories about his two young sons, Ed weaves in routines about running out of petrol in the most awkward place imaginable, helping rescue an injured man in the Cairngorms, and the nationdividing campaign and result of the EU referendum. His way of tackling Brexit is to draw an analogy with the time his son was determined to touch an electric fence with his dad trying to warn him of the dangers. “I was telling the story of the electric fence for a while, and then suddenly it struck me that it was Brexit in microcosm. I don’t want to alienate half of the population or maybe a third of my audience, but it works as an analogy whichever side you’re on. The government told you not to do this and that it would be a terrible idea, but you said ‘no, we want to do it anyway’. So now we’re doing it and it’s proving a terrible idea. I do think it’s a fair analogy, but no doubt for some it will come across as me 45

HISTORY OF THE UK'S FIRST SCHOOL FOR BLIND PEOPLE REVEALED IN NEW EXHIBITION AT THE MUSEUM OF LIVERPOOL

THE BLIND SCHOOL: PIONEERING PEOPLE AND PLACES Founded in 1791, Liverpool’s Royal School for the Blind, in particular its buildings and the everyday lives of students, is central to The Blind School: Pioneering People and Places, running at the museum of Liverpool now until 15 April 2018. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), The Blind School: Pioneering People and Places has been made possible thanks to National Lottery players. The exhibition features unique objects from the museum’s own collection alongside loans, personal stories and a film made in partnership with visually impaired and blind students from St Vincent’s School for Sensory Impairment, West derby. The exhibition is curated in partnership with Accentuate’s History of Place project, which explores 800 years in the lives of deaf and disabled people, and highlights accessible interpretation including audio description, BSL and multisensory features. It is estimated today that there are one billion disabled people in the world. Yet the history of deaf and disabled people continues to be overlooked, despite their stories being intrinsic to the environments we live in and around every day. The Blind School: Pioneering People and Places, explores what the architectural legacy of the School can reveal about the lives of those connected with it. 52

The Liverpool Blind School was founded by the blind abolitionist and human rights campaigner Edward Rushton, along with a number of his blind and sighted associates.

but has a much broader relevance too. The School has been through many changes and this exhibition draws on these to reflect changing attitudes in society.

Rushton had first hand experience of slavery through working on slave ships. His compassion for, and proximity to enslaved people led him to contract a disease which cost him his sight. As a result of his experiences of blindness and poverty and realising the poor treatment and life chances of many less wealthy blind people, he founded the school to offer training and skills.

“This remarkable, pioneering school was set up in Liverpool by blind and sighted individuals. As only the second school of its kind in the world, it led the way in educating and empowering blind people. It has changed hundreds of people’s lives in its almost 300 year history, and continues to do so.”

The exhibition gives us a moving insight into the daily lives of the pupils, the strict rules that they had to follow, how they crafted superb objects for sale and their leisure pursuits. The exhibition also considers how although learning trades enabled students to earn a living this sometimes replaced the basic education they were entitled to. Central to the story are the three purpose-built buildings that housed the school during its history and how changing attitudes reflected the changing architecture to meet the needs of pupils. This crossroad for him plays out in two scenes that articulate both his dark past and his potentially pure future, so we needed a location that could powerfully evoke both. Louisiana’s history is tied so deeply to the African American struggle and when you see those iconic rural mangroves, dense with live oaks and Spanish moss, you can't help but feel the weight of that struggle. And in the city of New Orleans there is also a really crisp duality between the old and the new.

And this is important because it affects how women and girls view themselves, which affects confidence - and confidence is the key to everything”, says Affi.
