Can’t stop the Rock He’s handsome, talented, officially the hottest star in Hollywood, and has achieved all he set out to do; but if you think Dwayne Johnson is ready to throw in the towel, think again. dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has an indomitable spirit. He's the epitome of the larger-thanlife personality, and a man who tries to lift everyone around him with a combination of power-packed energy and unrelenting optimism. Though given the fact he’s currently riding the crest of a tidal of wave of success, it would be more surprising if he weren’t upbeat and full of enthusiasm.
DWAYN E J OH N SON INTERVIEW

Regardless, last year marked a blockbuster trifecta for the handsome star. Having helped drive Fast & Furious 8 to box office success in the spring, he finished the year with hugely popular Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle, and while the Baywatch remake may have failed to live up to expectations (proving that even The Rock isn’t perfect!) he was still ranked by Forbes as the world's highest-paid actor with earnings of $64.5million in 2017 alone. The bottom line? You just can’t keep this former wrestler down. Which begs the question, does the indefatigable Johnson EVER have a bad day? “Of course! We all have bad days but when I
come to work, I try to put my best foot forward. There's a lot of people who depend on me and I feel like a lot of the work that I do, starts with me,” he says. “Inevitably, I am galvanising a lot of people and bringing them together. That, in itself, will give enough motivation to put your best foot forward and try to work with a smile. Also, I think it's in my personality,” explains Johnson, finishing with a flash of those perfect teeth. In many ways, the exuberant 45year-old is the ideal model of what every Hollywood actor aspires to be. His experience as a professional athlete has taught him great discipline both physically and mentally, allowing him to keep calm and focused even in the tumultuous entertainment industry. Taking full responsibly for his actions, you’re unlikely to see the California native throw a hissy fit on set, admitting that if he ever does get hot under the collar, his solution is to take a little time out and ‘find a quiet space’. “I just reset myself and be calm. I’ll do a little meditating, or I’ll try to figure out exactly what the problem is and what is bugging me,” he explains. Having recently announced that he and girlfriend of 12 years, Lauren Hashian, are expecting a baby - to join their two-year-old girl, Jasmine, and Johnson’s 15year-old daughter Simone from his marriage to his ex-wife and childhood sweetheart dany garcia – the high-octane hero is clearly flourishing in both his personal and professional life. Such achievements might make a mere mortal seek a well-earned break, but Johnson is far from
finished. This spring he will star in monster action flick Rampage, for which he is also executive producer, and he has a host of new film projects in the pipeline including a second San Andreas earthquake movie. Clearly, were Johnson not an actor, he could easily earn a living as a motivational speaker, and offers his greatest tip for staying inspired and overcoming adversity: “You've got to find a purpose in life. Whatever it is, go out and work your butt off and don't ever stop. In my case, sports and, later on, bodybuilding, were the things that helped me set goals for myself and build my self-esteem.” despite his impressive career, it’s worth remembering that things could have been very different for the cinema titan, who originally had his heart set on a career in American Football. Hampered by injury, he was forced to find another path, deciding to follow grandfather Peter maivia and father Rocky Johnson into the wresting ring. It is film however, that truly makes his heart sing, and as he reveals why he is more determined than ever, Johnson is visibly buzzing with an almost childlike glee. “I want to bring a lot of joy and entertainment to people who are paying their money and expect their money's worth. I work very hard on my movies and, as a producer, I also try to involve myself in the entire process, ensuring that people who see my movies are going to leave the theatre feeling happy and entertained. “That's what it's all about for me.”

LIVERPOOL’S TERRACOTTA WARRIORS LANDMARK EXHIBITION OPENS IN CITY IN LESS THAN THREE WEEKS
Liverpool’s China's First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors exhibition will open at the city’s World museum on Friday 9 February. more than 180 spectacular artefacts from museums across
Shaanxi Province in North West China - 5,000 miles from Liverpool - will take part in the landmark exhibition, running for eight months until 28 October 2018. Spanning almost 1,000 years, the exhibition sheds light on the formative years of the Chinese nation, from the bitter struggles of warring states in the 8th century BC to the rise of the Qin State and the unification of China by the First Emperor in 221 BC, concluding with the peace and prosperity of the Han dynasty (206 BC to 220 Ad). david Fleming, director of National museums Liverpool, said: “This is a tremendous coup, not just for Liverpool, but for the whole of the UK. As home to one
of the oldest Chinese communities in Europe, Liverpool is absolutely the right place for this exhibition, and we are hugely excited to be working with our museum colleagues in China to bring a collection of Warriors, and many other significant historical discoveries to the UK. “The Terracotta Warriors have found incredible fame around the world since they were discovered by chance in 1974, and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see them in Liverpool. 11

STAR OF ITV’S TRANSFORMATION STREET TAKES TO THE STAGE IN DEAD AND BREATHING BY CHISA HUTCHINSON DIRECTED BY REBECCA ATKINSON-LORD PRODUCED BY ARCH 468, UNITY THEATRE & THE ALBANY PRESENT
Transformation Street is a three part
ITV documentary following the staff and patients in a London gender clinic The show follows gender reassignment specialist dr Christopher Inglefield, and follows the fascinating and heart-warming stories of people transitioning their gender. The first episode broadcast received over 2m viewers. Actress Kim Tatum aka mzz Kimberley is, one of the stars of the series will be performing in the acclaimed US social satire ‘dead and Breathing’ By Chisa Hutchinson, playing atUnity (Liverpool) 7 - 17 Feb 2018 The play follows spiteful old Carolyn Whitlock wants to die already. She’s
T
been sick with cancer for almost as long as she can remember and the pain has made her so mean that there’s no one left who loves her. Carolyn just wants to give up, but in order to do so, she’s going to have to work harder than she ever has in her privileged life to convince her very Christian nurse Veronika to help her. But Veronika isn’t all she seems, and so before Carolyn can die in peace, they’ll both need to let go of everything they believe about what is right. Can this well-to-do widow, slowly succumbing to cancer manage to convince, her home nurse, to help her end her life? It wouldn’t be easy at the best of times, butTit becomes almost impossible when Carolyn finds
a final hurdle she must overcome. Spoiled, privileged, sheltered and judgemental she is repulsed by transsexuals and Veronika happens to be one. If Carolyn wants her own way, she will not only have to convince Veronika to do something that goes against her every belief; she will also need to choose what she denounces with revulsion as "death by tranny." ‘dead and Breathing’ is a dark comedy of ethics and mortality that positions the right to die against the right to live your own life. Through constantly surprising humour and persistent questioning, ‘dead and Breathing’ investigates morality, mortality, and the intense tug-of-war between the right to die with dignity and the idea of life as a gift.

ALAN STRANGE
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A GRAPHIC DESIGNER
Tell us about your job role Where do I start as I wear so many different hats these days. I suppose as well as being responsible for all new business that comes in I'm also the person who decides the creative for the client. I will then sometimes meet the client to present the work and complete the project. After that is all approved I will get involved in print or whatever media solution the client requires. Lastly the dreaded chasing of outstanding Invoices, so I'm kept quite busy these days. What makes a successful graphic designer? Firstly and most importantly you need to listen to the client, I've seen so much time wasted when a so called designer has gone off on one and although it may look pleasing it does not answer the brief at all. Also you need to think differently and give options otherwise anybody will have a go, and they usually do with some horrendous results.
Graphic design has evolved with so many businesses being online, how have you had to adapt? media solutions are changing all the time and are quite specialised at times. I am basically from a design and print background and have experts around me that advise on websites etc. Tell us about a typical day A typical day is different every single day I'm glad to say so I never get bored. The first thing I try to do is go through and answer as many emails as possible before the phone starts. I then decide what is the most urgent project to sort out (Which client frightens me most haha). Usually while I'm doing this other projects are coming in and I'm starting to think about them as well. I might have to get some print quotes along the way and then place the completed job with the printer. I've downed about three cups of tea by now and I might need to go and see a client, which gives me a backlog when I get back and another late night. There's always more emails to answer and maybe amendments to something that was done earlier. Hopefully the day has had no major panics and I can look forward to tomorrow. What is your proudest achievement? Without a doubt, outside of work, is having two wonderful children, one of each, who are an absolute credit. They are like chalk and cheese but are the most caring individuals you could wish to meet. In my career I'm very proud to boast that from nothing I've created quite a few jobs for people and a fair number of them have gone on to start their own successful companies, I get a buzz from that.
What advice would you give your younger self? Haha, is that before 'Wine, women and fast cars'. No joking apart, I think I would tell myself to carefully look at all the opportunities that are offered to you before making a hasty decision. I've taken the wrong road a couple of times when all seemed wonderful on the table. I would certainly look hard into going into a partnership again. I would rather succeed or fail by my own merits now. How do you deal with difficult clients? Selected hearing! Only joking all my clients are perfect. What is your best design work to date? I'd like to think it was my last project as I'm always trying to improve and produce something better. It's very hard to pick anything as design work is very subjective and I think everything I do is wonderful haha. What makes you happy? Seeing other people around me happy especially family and friends. How do you switch off? I find this aspect of life very difficult as I've been known to wake up at night and scribble down an idea, much to my wifes amusement. Besides that I think the best way I switch off is going to the Snowdon area and scrambling up a mountain or two, the views are to die for.

DARREN VISION The Choice is yours!
Choice is a great thing ... I love all the options I have when I buy something as simple as a cup of coffee ... I’ve got both a drive through Starbucks and drive a drive through Costa within a mile of my house. The choice of big brands I had at Cheshire Oaks in december was mind blowing ... I think I got 80% of my presents in one long (very long) day. For the remaining 20% I checked out the Black Friday offers ... all the Christmas stuff sorted in a few clicks. does anyone understand how Black Friday can last more than one day? All I know is Happy Hour can last more than an hour so I use that analogy to keep me sane! In the new year I was enticed into the shops by the January sales ... in truth I didn’t need much enticing ... all these choices at even cheaper prices. Although I couldn’t quite work out if the January Sales prices were cheaper than the Black Friday prices. And get this ... in the on-line January sales I can choose whether to have it delivered tomorrow or the next day after that ... or to a locker at my local Sports Centre. 22
Having so much choice is actually hard work and not always as much fun as I expected it to be ... when do we get chance to take a break from all this choice? This long list of what we can have ... or should I say have more of. Well it just so happens that a new year is actually a great time to take stock ... I don’t just mean just the traditional stuff like whether to diet or not ... or stop smoking ... or give up the drink. I mean take stock of the BIg stuff. By the way the BIg stuff usually takes a bit of time, a bit of serious thinking time and a fair amount of concentration. There won’t be a list to select from and your choices probably won’t be delivered the next day. The BIg stuff is about you .... is my career going to plan, do I even have a plan? This doesn’t mean look for another job, it means way up the pro’s and cons. Is there something I could do at work that would make me better at what I do ... which may get me noticed ... and who knows, may get me promoted. But the BIg stuff isn’t just about work and money ... it could be about
how do you find more time in this always-on world. That’s the holy grail for most people. So maybe the BIg stuff is about dropping a few things you don’t enjoy or don’t need to do ... so that you create time for yourself. The 21st century has given us so much choice and given us so many options that sometimes we don’t take a minute and ask if this is what we want? I think we sometimes look in the wrong place. Instead of looking at all the choices we are presented with maybe we just have a look at what we really want ... rather than picking from a shopping list that we are force-fed with, maybe we should create our own agenda. Be active not passive. By the way I’ve seen a nice pair of trainers in Sports direct that I’ll probably buy this weekend ... so once you’ve given some time to your own BIg stuff you can get back onto the merry-go-round called life. Just treat yourself to some thinking time. If you want to chat about this please get in touch via email at darren@dasala.co.uk or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren.

THERAPY?
The Stranglers will be coming to the O2 Liverpool on march 6 with The Definitive Tour. With the vast catalogue of material that the Stranglers have in their recorded arsenal, it is never easy to decide exactly which songs to bring together on record or perform live on tour but, in march 2018, the band will present their “definitive” collection. The definitive Tour is set to coincide with the planned re-release of their first seven albums (six studio and one live) originally issued on the UA and EmI/Liberty labels. As always, audiences can expect to be swept up high on the wave of the Stranglers’ powerful sound during what is always an exhilarating live experience; pounding rhythms, soaring melodies, quirky humour and
thrillingly daring musicianship will come together again this march. One of the UK’s most exciting, credible and influential British groups, The Stranglers are riding high on the crest of a resurgent wave of popularity. They continue to thrive on the live circuit and their existing large and loyal fan base has swelled in recent years as new converts join the ranks. With record-breaking, sell-out shows and festival appearances throughout the UK and the rest of the world, public demand to hear and see the group has never been so high; true testament to their considerable musical talent and the enduring quality of their songs.
Following the announcement of their UK tour in April 2018, dirty Sanchez’s matt Pritchard and Lee dainton have now added a date at O2 Academy2 Liverpool on Friday 13 April due to massive demand. Pritchard and dainton rose to fame, infamy and notoriety on gross-out TV show dirty Sanchez. Along with pals mike “Pancho” Locke and dan Joyce, the quartet took what US counterparts such as Jackass did and cranked theirdangerous street stunts and wilfully inane pranks up a level and delivered them all with a defiant skate-punk, antiestablishment attitude and inherent Welshness. Now, 15 years on from the original dirty Sanchez series, Pritchard and dainton are hitting the road to share all thebehind the scenes secrets and stories from the most successful and shocking show on air on mTV: They’ll also be screening never before seen footage and taking questions from YOU! 27

LEISURE AND FITNESS SPECIALISTS REALBUZZ LIVERPOOL SETTLING INTO THEIR NEW HOME IN LIVERPOOL ONE After opening their store in Liverpool ONE shopping centre in October 2017, leading leisure and fitness retailer realbuzz Liverpool are settling in well to their new merseyside surroundings. realbuzz Liverpool marked the sixth store opening for the rapidly-expanding North-Westbased retailer, who now have eight stores across the UK, with plans to open a further 30 locations throughout 2018 and 2019. “The welcome we’ve received from the local leisure and fitness community in Liverpool has been unbelievable,” said Tim Rogers, chairman of The Realbuzz group. “We’re proud to cater to all ability levels, which is evidenced by our eclectic mix of loyal customers. From first time gym-goers to experienced runners, we have a range of products to suit everyone.” realbuzz Liverpool occupies a 1,400 square foot unit on St John Street in Liverpool ONE, next to Apple and John Lewis. The store stocks a range of leisure and fitness footwear, 30

As well as a varied product offering, realbuzz Liverpool prides itself on an ethos where the customer comes first. Unrivaled levels of customer service mean that every customer leaves the store with the right product for them. “We like to do things differently from the ‘one-sizefits-all’ approach of other running and fitness retailers,” said Tim. “Our consultative process takes a wide range of factors into account, including ability level, training frequency, running style and goals.”
True to their word, realbuzz Liverpool offers storewide discounts to members of local gyms and running clubs. One of Liverpool’s biggest running clubs, dockside Runners, now calls realbuzz Liverpool their home, with dozens of runners setting off for twice-weekly from the store. “Working with the guys from dockside Runners has been great,” said Paul. “Their passion for running encapsulates everything we’re about as a brand, so it’s an honour to support them.”
The store also acts as a central hub for the local running community, with lockers provided for customers and expert staff on hand to showcase local running routes. Paul Eaton, Chief marketing Officer at The Realbuzz group, said: “Whenever we open a new store, it’s hugely important for us to develop a two-way relationship with local runners and fitness fanatics. It’s their feedback and word of mouth

RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SASSY MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO Wow – where did January go? Before I know it I’ll be on sleep countdown for Christmas 2018… although to be fair – that normally starts for me in may! So Panto is over and done with for another year (Oh yes it is!) – I can honestly say despite the gruelling schedule of 52 shows in 3 weeks – I have never worked with such an amazing cast and crew – loved being in the heart of town at The Epstein – and to finally work with my good friend Lee Kelly for the first time – and I’m quite sure it won’t be the last! It’s an amazing theatre – in fact where I trained at Elliott Clarke when it was The Neptune and despite rumours over Christmas – the theatre is still very much up and running with a number of exciting shows there this year – including LHK Productions Jack & the Beanstalk at Easter with Ray Quinn then Snow White & the 7 dwarfs at Christmas! I have often compared myself to the Catherine Tate character, amazingly called “Claire” .. who is often approached to do a number of things like being a foreign interpreter, or entering herself into a tennis tournament when she’s never lifted a racquet, her
famous phrase is “I can do that” then just throws herself into it… well, I’ve had another one of those moments! As well as running LHK Productions Lee Kelly also had LHK Entertainments which is absolutely overflowing with talented youngsters – some of whom were in Peter Pan at Christmas. I was asked to go and do a guest class at one of the theatre workshops, which I loved doing – I qualified to teach drama whilst at Elliott Clarke and taught on a Saturday morning for many years – I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it and loved every second! As a result – I have now found myself directing their shows at The Epstein … mamma mia/Shrek in march and Sister Act/matilda in July. Really looking forward to this new challenge! As well as this new project … I have actually found the love of my life already this year … in the form of … Hugh Jackman! If you haven’t seen The greatest Showman with Hugh’s portrayal of Barnum – then I suggest you go and see it immediately! At the time of print I have already been the cinema 3 times to see it … and no doubt that will have quadrupled before the end of the month. It is one of the best soundtracks I have heard in a long time – with “This is me” rightly winning a golden globe for Best Original Song. I teamed up with my old partner in Crime Jay Hynd on Blue monday for an evening for Alder Hey at Fazenda ... where the Chefs from the hospital had a “cook off” with the Surgeons! It was a fabulous evening with over £17000 raised … plus the lovely Shirley Ballas from Strictly, Beth Tweddle and many Hollyoaks stars were there to help on the evening ... Shirley even kindly donated a dress and tickets to next year’s Strictly to the Auction. I was stunned and rather humbled to receive a nomination for the 2nd year running for a Liverpool Lifestyle Award for Social media Influencer of the year and would like to thank everyone who nominated me and who have voted so far. I am also delighted to
announce that I will be hosting the event on Saturday 3rd march at The Liner Hotel which I am really looking forward to – I have attended many of the Lifestyle awards over the years and to be asked by Amanda to compere the evening is an absolute privilege. There are so many local businesses that often go unnoticed or unrecognised and the Lifestyle Awards change all that. However one of my best friends dale Roberts is in the same category as me so that has been causing some friendly rivalry on social media in itself! For those who know me, I am not really a “foodie” or one of those people who raves about going out for meals… however … last month changed all of that! I was invited to a taster evening at the brand new Hickory’s Smokehouse in Southport . They kindly invited my family and I – and when I say I have never seen so much food on a table in my life I’m not exaggerating! Even as a vegetarian – the choices were endless and the different flavoured lemonades and milkshakes (Even had dairy free ones!) … I will definitely be going back – and certainly trying the breakfast menu too. So that’s been the start to my year so far and we’re already in February, wow, I know that this looks like another exciting year ahead!

BEING POSITIVE, NOT PERFECT
WARNING! I am addicted to being up beat so…. deep breath….. and smile and be happier.
It’s February, we are in the throws
of winter, the skies are grey, cold rain hits our faces as we exit our homes to battle our way through howling winds to get to destinations we really do not want to go to! Well maybe that’s a slight exaggeration. But it is a gloomy month. We are recovering financially and physically after our over indulgences over our favourite time Christmas, where happiness starts blooming around October and stays with us until that final hangover around the 2nd Of January. We’ve recovered from dry January and say smugly that everything will be fine. Are you keeping up your resolutions? Are you still motivated and keeping fit? Are you keeping up with your plan to drop the two stone that has just appeared over the festive season? It’s funny how we we can convince ourselves that forgetting the Slimming World Syns is actually allowed. We give ourselves “Barley”, a fabulous Liverpool expression of giving yourself exemption from “being good” ,because it’s a self allowance. Yeah, we give ourselves 34
Oh the joy of Christmas, the time of goodwill to all men and women, except after a skin full of Stella turns you into a violent, nasty person. Until that last bottle of Prosecco assisted you, in losing your phone and your self respect as you stumble back home at 4 am, or worse doing the walk of shame later the following day… Ahhh the walk of shame, hey no one is judging here, we judge ourselves well enough without, moi, the new column writer joining in. (That’s for next month ha!☺). I’m no spring chicken, I am 57 in April this year, I have lived a bit too but I would like to share some of my older and wiser wisdom with you in this column as the months go on. It will be a read for every age group and gender. And if you have met me you will know that I am all about embracing positivity and happiness. I am going to show you how you love yourself a little bit more. So let’s raise a glass of … green blended juice to February and thank goodness we have lost a stone in January albeit due to Aussie Flu rather than our resolutions and dry and Vegan January. Here’s to the daffodils and spring flowers, now peeping
through our flower beds. Here’s to being healthier and happier and thinking good thoughts. It’s time that we knew a secret.. and that is that to feel happier in life we need to raise our energy levels all year round because it’s not what we do in winter that makes us feel fatter, unfit and unhealthy, but it is the choices we make all year round. So bin resolutions and let’s get into a better lifestyle all the time. We can flip our thoughts right the way round and start believing in ourselves, we can know that we make good choices with food and drinks, we can get ourselves into better habits of exercise and we can take out negativity and replace it with a more vibrant, summery positive mental attitude. So get your last years resolution juicer or nutribullet out of the cupboard and get some spinach in your system. drop the sugar (It’s so addictive) and cut down on the school night drinking. make some small changes. get Active. move it. Walking is the easiest way to start your fitness level improvement. Or join the gym and get doing some weights.

permission to be over indulge to the point of passing out because it’s winter and cold nights need to be rewarded with something to uplift our spirits. my burning question is how come we are allowed to break the rules (self imposed as they are) and how come we manage to take rule breaking to a new level, a pretty low level at that. Why do we think it’s ok to have the hangover from hell, in the office most days? We can play pass the paracetamols, because everyone else has broken the rules also.
So bin resolutions and let’s get into a better lifestyle all the time

Next month I’m going to talk more about Healthy mind, Healthy Body and give a few tips on how to tran sform your boring old negative thinking into new up beat Positive high vibe good mindset. Have a great month – think good thoughts. gill Fell…….Positive Not Perfect gillfell.com

HER BENNY been included and some have been shelved. Tweaks and adjustments have been made to scenes, staging and dialogue. However, although revamped and re-orchestrated, the musical still remains true to Silas K Hocking’s original novel.
Twenty five years ago a
young Austrian girl Caroline Crystle was working as an au pair in merseyside. She had heard about auditions for the musical ‘Her Benny’ which were to be staged at The Empire Theatre in Liverpool. A talented singer and actress and with a desire to make friends and improve her English, she went along. To her delight she won a place in the company. That young lady now lives in New York, yet she heard of the special 25th Anniversary of the show in Liverpool and vowed that she and her husband must go and see it. Together with many of the other cast from that time she will share in the celebratory reunion that is to be held at The Royal Court during the run. She will notice some changes because like all musicals they evolve. Some new songs have
Her Benny is an emotive tale of a young boy’s struggle to survive the harsh streets of Liverpool during the cruelty and injustice o the Victorian era. The story centres on the life and times of Benny Bates and his waif like sister Nell. With a drunkard for a father and a brutish stepmother, the young pair are forced to earn a crust by selling matches and carrying bags for the rich of the 1880’s on the Liverpool docks. Fleeing the violence of their broken home they are taken in by kindly nightwatchman Joe Wragg and his wife Sally and for a while live like a proper family. Although happy for a time, tragedy strikes when little Nell falls ill and Benny is accused of a crime he didn’t commit. It’s not all serious though, far from it. There are lots of laughs along the way as well as some high energy dance numbers, catchy sing along tunes and pacy numbers mixed in with the more stirring ballads. The cast includes John mcgrellis who has appeared in several productions in the city’s theatres and more recently starred as dI martin Leahy in the widely acclaimed series ‘Little Boy Blue’ and the
fabulous Lindzi germain, one of The Royal Court’s regulars. She is a wonderful all rounder who has starred in stage plays, farces, gritty dramas and musical theatre and most recently appeared as Angela gabriel in The Royal Court’s sell out Christmas production ‘The Scouse Nativity’. Together with Janet Cowley ex Phantom of the Opera and Elliott Hanna who played the leading role of Billy Elliot in the West End production at the Victoria Palace Theatre London, they join a fantastic professional cast drawn primarily from the merseyside area and young performers who successfully came through the challenging audition process held at The Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool. According to Anne dalton, the director, writer and producer of the musical “I think this is the best production I’ve ever staged. I’ve got a cast to die for, I’ve got a fantastic choreographer in Nazene danielle, a beautifully reorchestrated score by the talented greg Last and a wonderful theatre in the superlatively refurbished Royal Court. I can’t wait for the production to start”.

Snazzy New Image ... Same Excellent Service! Fifteen months ago, changes were afoot at greenbank Property Services. A change of directorship brought fresh, new, innovative ideas to the business which in turn, massively improved the level of service previously given to our customers. What became clear to us during early discussions was that success in our industry means never losing focus on our customers’ needs and objectives. Furthermore, with the rise of Social media Platforms, we wanted to create an iconic ‘g’ Logo that people will instantly recognise and relate to. Taking this into consideration, we were excited to improve on an already successful logo and after nearly 20 years, it was finally time to retire the old
logo and replace it with a slicker, more modern version. By doing so, we are hopeful the re brand will enhance customer experience and support the development and growth of the company. Coincidentally, the launch of the re brand happily overlaps with us being honoured to be a Finalist at the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards 2018 in the ‘Best Property Services’ category. This nomination in itself is a testament as to how far we have improved and matured as a business. So, designed with a fresh now look and hopeful for a Liverpool Lifestyle Award, we are all very excited to see what 2018 brings for us and look forward to helping all customers old and new with all of their Property Needs.

ED BYRNE SPOILER ALERT TOUR E d Byrne has been an acclaimed
stand-up for 20 years now. As he prepares to launch himself upon the nation with another touring show, the Irish comic is firmly of a belief that the current breed of parents spoil their kids rotten whether it’s to do with the ever-increasing size of garden trampolines, or his own kids’ demand for elderflower cordial. “my dad wasn’t a bad dad, he was just a 1970s dad. If I could never see my children ever again from this moment on, and I’ve already done more parenting then he did in my entire life. But, of course, I made a conscious decision that I was going to be an awesome dad. my wife will come back with tales from her friends of how awful their husbands are and she’ll see me smiling and say ‘alright, stop congratulating yourself just because such and such can’t be left alone with their children for two minutes’.” In his new touring show, the perfectly-titled Spoiler Alert, Ed compares and contrasts the oldschool child-rearing days with 21st century methods and suggests that there are different ways to learn how to be a mum or dad. “I grew up in what I would call an aspirational
household in that my parents bettered themselves over the course of my childhood. my mother was a radiographer and ended up a lecturer in radiography, while my dad was a sheet metal worker and went up to a supervisory role. I’d still say that you are expected to do a lot more parenting than our parents did and that’s a weird thing because you tend to think that your parents are where you learned parenting from. But you don’t, really, it’s more that you look around you to see what’s going on with other parents.” For the show Ed extends his analysis on the culture of entitlement to look at areas where we could perhaps do with being spoiled a little bit more. “Where I think we’re not acting spoiled enough is in the political arena. We have a tendency to accept what’s happening and that’s where we should be acting more entitled: we are literally entitled to the government we want. We’re spoiled in all these little ways, but not spoiled enough.”
being a typical liberal elite Remoaner.” Spoiler Alert also continues a theme that he’s tackled in previous shows, that of his gradual shift from being a working-class dubliner to a fully paid-up rural-residing member of the middle classes. Where once he would do routines slating 4x4 owners, he is now the proud(ish) owner of such a vehicle. And in the poster for his tour, he brandishes other signifiers of social mobility: a bowtie and chainsaw. “It’s one of two I own: that one is the smaller of the two,” Ed remarks of his chainsaw rather than his neckwear. “I use it for firewood, both for my wood burning stove and also for the barbecue. The first time I used one I was fine, though I think it worried my parents that I had bought a chainsaw.”
Ed Byrne will appear on Sat 3rd March at the Auditorium, Liverpool
As well as stories about his two young sons, Ed weaves in routines about running out of petrol in the most awkward place imaginable, helping rescue an injured man in the Cairngorms, and the nationdividing campaign and result of the EU referendum. His way of tackling Brexit is to draw an analogy with the time his son was determined to touch an electric fence with his dad trying to warn him of the dangers. “I was telling the story of the electric fence for a while, and then suddenly it struck me that it was Brexit in microcosm. I don’t want to alienate half of the population or maybe a third of my audience, but it works as an analogy whichever side you’re on. The government told you not to do this and that it would be a terrible idea, but you said ‘no, we want to do it anyway’. So now we’re doing it and it’s proving a terrible idea. I do think it’s a fair analogy, but no doubt for some it will come across as me 45
G O O D B U Y E S T AT E A G E N T S B I D S FA R E W E L L T O H I G H E S T AT E A G E N C Y F E E S Liverpool property consultant Tim mcInally has put home owners in control of their own property sales by launching good Buy Estate Agents. good Buy offers a full estate agency service, simplified, and could make the process of selling your home as easy as selling a car. The unique estate agency has no shop front but operates throughout Liverpool, contactable by phone and online. As a result of this, as well as a number of other clever business decisions, good Buy saves on overheads and is able to pass those savings on to clients. Tim and his team sell houses for a one off fee, with packages starting from as low as £99.
HAIRLUCINATIONS
Tim mcInally, director of good Buy Estate Agents said, “When I was working as a property consultant a friend asked me why selling a house couldn't be as straightforward as selling a car on the likes of Autotrader, or similar sites. With those sites you take some photos, write yourself a description and pay a set fee to advertise. The answer is that property sellers can't advertise on the all-important property sites themselves, they need an agent to do that for them. I realised though that there was no reason why an agent couldn't offer that kind of simple, low cost solution.”
Well done to all the team from Hairlucinations who recently named in the top 100 national providers for apprentices in the UK at last month’s gala dinner at the grosvenor Hotel in London. After picking up the 2017 National Apprenticeship Awards Area Final late last year in recognition after 48 years of creating world class hairdressers within our region, the Bootle based salon made the national finals. Hairlucinations won the award in recognition of the contribution to producing continuous outstanding support and training for all of the apprentices they employ. HISTORY OF THE UK'S FIRST SCHOOL FOR BLIND PEOPLE REVEALED IN NEW EXHIBITION AT THE MUSEUM OF LIVERPOOL
THE BLIND SCHOOL: PIONEERING PEOPLE AND PLACES Founded in 1791, Liverpool’s Royal School for the Blind, in particular its buildings and the everyday lives of students, is central to The Blind School: Pioneering People and Places, running at the museum of Liverpool now until 15 April 2018. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), The Blind School: Pioneering People and Places has been made possible thanks to National Lottery players. The exhibition features unique objects from the museum’s own collection alongside loans, personal stories and a film made in partnership with visually impaired and blind students from St Vincent’s School for Sensory Impairment, West derby. The exhibition is curated in partnership with Accentuate’s History of Place project, which explores 800 years in the lives of deaf and disabled people, and highlights accessible interpretation including audio description, BSL and multisensory features. It is estimated today that there are one billion disabled people in the world. Yet the history of deaf and disabled people continues to be overlooked, despite their stories being intrinsic to the environments we live in and around every day. The Blind School: Pioneering People and Places, explores what the architectural legacy of the School can reveal about the lives of those connected with it. 52
The Liverpool Blind School was founded by the blind abolitionist and human rights campaigner Edward Rushton, along with a number of his blind and sighted associates.
but has a much broader relevance too. The School has been through many changes and this exhibition draws on these to reflect changing attitudes in society.
Rushton had first hand experience of slavery through working on slave ships. His compassion for, and proximity to enslaved people led him to contract a disease which cost him his sight. As a result of his experiences of blindness and poverty and realising the poor treatment and life chances of many less wealthy blind people, he founded the school to offer training and skills.
“This remarkable, pioneering school was set up in Liverpool by blind and sighted individuals. As only the second school of its kind in the world, it led the way in educating and empowering blind people. It has changed hundreds of people’s lives in its almost 300 year history, and continues to do so.”
The exhibition gives us a moving insight into the daily lives of the pupils, the strict rules that they had to follow, how they crafted superb objects for sale and their leisure pursuits. The exhibition also considers how although learning trades enabled students to earn a living this sometimes replaced the basic education they were entitled to. Central to the story are the three purpose-built buildings that housed the school during its history and how changing attitudes reflected the changing architecture to meet the needs of pupils. Kay Jones, Curator of Urban Community History said: “We are proud to be working with History of Place on this exhibition. The story of Liverpool’s Royal School for the Blind is not only a fascinating local story
Esther Fox, Head of the Accentuate Programme said: “Our History of Place project has been working with communities across the country to shine a spotlight on 800 years of history, specifically telling the stories of deaf and disabled people. Our exhibitions hosted by our partner museums represent a fantastic opportunity to showcase artefacts which have not been seen before as well as push the boundaries as to what we mean by making exhibitions accessible. disabled people have been at the heart of the research process, along with the design and creation of the exhibition, this leads to a much richer and more authentic experience.”

“After hearing CITIzEN KANE, images of the deep South instantly began to flood my thoughts. In the film, our main character is at the point of making a choice. This crossroad for him plays out in two scenes that articulate both his dark past and his potentially pure future, so we needed a location that could powerfully evoke both. Louisiana’s history is tied so deeply to the African American struggle and when you see those iconic rural mangroves, dense with live oaks and Spanish moss, you can't help but feel the weight of that struggle. And in the city of New Orleans there is also a really crisp duality between the old and the new.
It’s a city that has had to quite literally be reborn after tragedy so it felt perfect for our story.” NIgHTmARES ON WAX is one of the most influential artists of a generation, his music having inspired many musicians and producers across the globe over his quarter decade career. As Warp’s longest serving active artist, he has broadened the sound of the label and paved the way for artists such as Flying Lotus, Hudson mohawke and mount Kimbie.
“
NIgHTmARES ON WAX has announced his longanticipated return with a new album SHAPE THE FUTURE. The marriage of soul, hip-hop, dub and the timeless club sounds that NIgHTmARES ON WAX has been mutating and perfecting for years finds, perhaps, its most fluid form yet on the new album. Energised by globetrotting runs of studio sessions and dJ sets, this latest salvo is a masterpiece of contemporary and classic genre blending that solidifies NIgHTmARES ON WAX’s place as an inspirational electronic music figurehead. No more so than on the shamanistic vocals of recent single BACK TO NATURE and, in particular, the arresting voices of mozez and Kanye West and Flume collaborator Allan Kingdom george Evelyn aka NIgHTmARES ON WAX says:
a different person each day so I could never make the same album again. Expressions change. I’ve brought in a lot of outside people, including musicians and a lot of orchestration. It’s brought a lot of enrichment. Each album to me is a discovery and a reflection; a mirror where I'm at in life over a period of time through writing and touring. It inspires my reality and affects my outlook on things and, in turn, they’re expressed through the music; expressing a message through different sides of emotion and our relationship to our reality”

NIGHTMARES ON WAx will appear at the Invisible Wind Factory in Liverpool on Friday 9 February
and start recognising them as a sign of a healthy woman”, Affi adds.
Why are periods still taboo in 2018? In some countries like India women who have periods are seen as impure, filthy, sick and even cursed and only 12% of girls use menstruation products. While these taboos exist globally, they are especially prominent and relevant in developing countries. In East Africa, menstruation is one of the biggest reasons why adolescent girls miss school. ... When girls don't have access to sanitary pads, they will often choose to leave school early, or stay home altogether, Now Freda, the first truly organic, 100% cotton, eco-friendly period care range that is rebooting femcare for the 21st Century is on a mission to de-stigmatise periods and end period poverty which affects over 130m girls and women worldwide (UN figures). Freda has been created for women by women - and gives back to women as a portion of every purchase is donated to initiatives worldwide tackling period poverty. And using artificial intelligence Freda allows you to select your own combination of products based on your period, and sync the delivery of products to ensure they arrive a few days before your cycle. “The whole femcare space needs rebooting. And Freda is here to reboot it”, says Freda founder Affi ParviziWayne who started the company after seeing refugees stuck at European border crossings on the news and wondering how they managed their periods. “We want to talk openly about the subject without patronising women or telling them how to live their periods. We want to embrace how we experience periods 56
Freda is an online subscription service which understands that every cycle is different, and allows you to select your own combination of products and absorbencies based on your period. Using artificial intelligence to predict your start date its online period tracker allows you to sync the delivery of your products to ensure they arrive a few days before your cycle. The trackercombines an advanced algorithm and insight from specialist consultant gynaecologists. “I was struck by the lack of available information around what actually goes into pads and tampons,” says Affi. “Just as we pay attention to what goes into the foods that we eat and the products we put on our skin, we should also be able to make a more informed decision when it comes to the most intimate product we as women use. do women realise that some high street pads and tampons are actually made of chemicals, fragrances, dyes, rayon, polyester, polyethylene, polyproprylene, chlorine and pesticides which are linked to health conditions? And would they continue buying these brands on auto-pilot if they did?”, says Affi. Freda wants to reframe periods from secret to private, and from dirty to healthy - which is why you will not see the word ‘sanitary’ on any of their products - and bust myths about everything that goes in to big brandtampons and pads." Freda advocates responsibility around period care provision for women and girls worldwide regardless of their circumstances.“Access to period care is a basic human and universal right, not a luxury”, says Affi. The lives and education of hundreds of millions of girls worldwide are impeded by not having access to period essentials and in 2018 that’s simply not OK.” A portion of everysubscription to Freda goes towards worldwide initiatives tackling period poverty both in the UK and internationally including A Bloody good Cause, a UK initiative to provide pads to refugees and the homeless, Bloody good Period, which provides asylum seekers with better access to period care, and Killi Pads, a micro enterprise in Tanzania which produces reusable cloth pads with locally sourced materials for local
school girls, many of whom live in poverty, with little access to running water, hygienic facilities or basic period care. When it comes to accessibility, Freda believes pads and tampons are essential health and hygiene products, and should be as widely and freely available in public places. The company is on a mission to get forward-thinking offices, hotels, gyms, and schools - spaces where they are currently considered a ‘perk’ - to stock period care products freely and conveniently. Freda also has retail plans to make them available on the high street. “By offering better access to period products we’re helping to normalise what is a natural process”, says Affi. “After all, we’re not expected to carry around our own toilet paper. From today, women now have better access to period care and an easier way to manage their periods.” Named after Freyja who, in Norse mythology, is a goddess associated with love, sex, beauty and fertility, Freda believes that having honest conversations is key to creating a generational change towards bringing periods to the forefront of awareness which will help to bust myths, break taboos and normalise the conversation. “One day it will become the norm for a new generation to talk about something which half the population go through monthly so they’re not embarrassed when they go to school or work, and can talk freely about it. And this is important because it affects how women and girls view themselves, which affects confidence - and confidence is the key to everything”, says Affi. A Freda subscription costs around £6.99 a month and can be purchased at www.myfreda.com

EDIT OR’S LAST WORD This year I am embracing mindfulness and this month I continue with more gratitude. Thank you to my readers and advertisers for without you we would not be celebrating ten years at the top in 2018. Thank you to my children who make me smile every day. And to my husband who continues to lift me up and be my number one fan (And also an excellent maker of tea).

It’s hard to be angry when you are grateful. So negative thoughts and toxic emotions are swept away, so not only does it make you feel good but there’s scientific evidence that proves that expressing gratitude on a daily basis can improve physical health as well as sleep, heart and immune function. gratitude is one of the most important elements of success. The Liverpool Lifestyle Awards next month offers businesses a chance to share their success and gratitude to others, with a record number of votes this year and requests for tickets going through the roof, this promises to be our biggest and best one yet. We are honoured to work with so many talented businesses and entrepreneurs across the region. This month I am truly thankful for some amazing interviews in Lifestyle magazine starting with the hottest man on the planet, dwayne Johnson, he can rock our front cover any time! And recent Bafta winner Octavia Spencer talks about her latest movie The Shape of Water. Funnyman Ed Byrne embarks on a new tour and talks about life with kids. Which from personal experience, gives you a lot to laugh about. Let’s not forget it’s Valentine’s day as well, a day my husband does not recognise as he believe every day is a day to express love and gratitude. Which pretty much sums it up. Have a wonderful day, week and month and embrace life, it’s yours to live to the fullest!
