and ingredients that are not suitable for your skin type including incorrect makeup and foundations have devastating effects on the skin and can excel ageing early on in your young adult years, don't waste your money on products that are truly not fit for your own personal and bespoke application.

INTRODUCING

K Y D OL CE Skincare expert based at  in Beyond Medispa at Beauty Bazaar Harvey Nichols, The skin specialist aesthetician with over 15 years experience has treated more than 20,000 patients and. co founder of BOW & CO WELLNESS concession. "Your skin is like a bridge, the bridge is used over and over throughout life, it starts off being strong and the whole infrastructure is there but one day the bridge gives way and starts to buckle, signs of ageing happen overnight, suddenly huge cracks appear and the bridge is stretched and misshaped, by then it’s too late, do not just assume you will be fine when you next leave your skin exposed to the sun, when you abuse the sunbed, when you do not protect your skin and look after it from the constantly changing seasonal weathers and environmental stress, eventually the ageing process will catch up with you, so how you look after it now truly matters more than ever. The weather, pollution, pathogens and chemicals we come into contact with everyday are valuable facts of knowledge that are right in front of our noses, been aware of these can improve the way we choose to live our lives and allow our beautiful skin to stay beautiful throughout the course of our entire lives. Here are my 5 top tips for winter skincare: 1.Drinking a healthy clean source of water such as mineral or spring water - your cells are made up of 80% water which is known as hyaluronic acid when it is drawn into a skin cells by osmosis, maintaining your hydration levels is most definitely the first and most important tips and you can also eat fresh vegetables and fruit due to there high levels of water content similar to the 80% water made up of yourself. 2. Keeping your skin natural. Applying skincare products

3. Less is more. Keeping things simple with youthful looking skin is highly recommended, application dosage is the key, applying as and when required, overloading the skin does not allow the skin to breath and blocks pores, pores in the skin are made up of thousands of microscopic sized pockets allowing the skin to breath, sweat glands in the skin also play active roles in the excretory system, or the organs and glands that flush out toxins and excess minerals from the body. So applying products heavily can put too much stress on the skin, block pores leading to a build up of dead cells, sebum and product overload not allowing the skin to do what it requires to thrive. 4. Dosage application is an advanced skincare technique and in fact much simpler to follow as you are applying to areas of skin that only require attention as and when needed throughout the day, your skin constantly changes due to its porous breathable nature. Your skin is very similar to earth's atmosphere, the 5 layers of our human skin is where temperatures change, air composition and air density so one could say our skin has its very own atmosphere that should not be ignored, nurtured, attended and cared for as much as the care and time gone into making ourselves up, understanding the key components and how our skin plays a big part of so many important facts gives us all the knowledge to keeping our skin younger than ever and most importantly keeping it happy and you. Cosmetics can also trap skin-damaging free-radicals that float in the air leading to advanced ageing 5.Use an organic skincare range to protect you from the sun and atmospheric toxic chemicals. Have a consultation with a qualified and licensed skin aesthetician before been allowed to pursue a new skincare regime with these wonderful advanced products.

On a cold and wet morning on

Tuesday 11th December 2018, Santa and his Elves from the Royal Air Force, fought through the bad weather to deliver presents to the sick children at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Now in its Thirteenth year, the RAF Charity Santa Present Drop aims to help raise the spirits of the children residing in hospital over the Christmas period by delivering presents. Presents and hospital donations are raised throughout the year by the RAF team, along with students from Priestley College, Warrington and Marple College, Manchester. This year’s fund- raising activities included a sponsored 15 mile walk by Priestley

College and a 12-hour sponsored 5 a side football match by Marple College. This is a popular event amongst Staff at the RAF Armed Forces Careers Offices in Liverpool & Manchester. ‘Elves’ are drawn out of a hat as everyone wants to be involved in spreading good cheer amongst the children; whilst heart-breaking to see so many poorly children, seeing the joy on their faces when they see Santa and the Elves makes everything worthwhile and puts your own lives into perspective! You make sure that when you get home that night your family get an extra big cuddle! Special thanks to the students who raised £4500, Smyths Toy Store,

STONE COLD

STALLONE 10

1969’s Downhill Racer.

Sylvester Stallone appears to be

having one last hurrah in what is a surprisingly fertile period of his career. It seems perverse that with Rocky Balboa returning in the new Creed II movie – albeit as a trainer rather than a fighter – and Rambo storming back for a fifth, final fight against the powers of evil in the autumn of 2019, Stallone should choose this moment to retire from the regular grind of movie-making.

And yet, at 72, you’d feel he was entitled to sit back a little. Sly is a true veteran of the industry – indeed, next year marks half a century of film-making, dating right the way back to his debut, as a restaurant patron in a scene with Robert Redford and Camilla Spary in

“For me, success comes from a place where you can find the right combination of physical and mental strength,” he begins. “To have that in tune has always given me the encouragement to get up another day, to work my hardest, to provide for my family.

Forget going online, you’re more likely to catch a word these days with the New York-born star in one of Beverly Hills’ salubrious gyms. Fitness and health remain buzzwords for Stallone brand, and while the actor has slimmed down from his pumped-up 1980s self, he remains in incredible shape – physically and mentally – for someone on the cusp of retirement. And more than that, he’s still looking for opportunities.

“Good habits fuel each other and I believe I am a result of trying to keep those habits going. Perhaps over the years I’ve relaxed some of that old persona, but it doesn’t mean to say I’ve lost my desire to achieve.”

OLDER, BOLDER AND TOUGHER THAN EVER, SYLVESTER STALLONE SAYS WHILE THE TIME IS RIGHT TO BOW OUT, HE’S NOT GOING QUIETLY.

It’s a career that barely needs inspection – especially not the softcore pornography of his second excursion onto film, The Party at Kitty and Stud’s! But across Rocky and Rambo, via Tango & Cash, Judge Dredd and The Expendables, right the way through into voiceover work for a successful of quirky animated characters, there is one thing that has remained constant – the strength, power and poise of one of the planet’s favourite actors.

been someone who likes to play out life face-to-face. He admits there are “about 50 Facebook pages dedicated to me but none that I write”, and only uses Twitter rarely: “I do it a couple of times to test people, like, 'What would you think of this guy in the movie?' That kind of thing… but I don't hold conversations online anymore as I was always getting in trouble!”

Indeed, being competitive is at the heart of who Stallone is, even now, yet in a shift from his younger self, he admits he sees competition now as a healthy injection of life, not a constant battle. “It's not like with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the past; he and I were really competitive, because we were in the same genre. That was a big rivalry we had and I enjoyed it for a good many years. And it was healthy – and that’s fine, because good actors have that, they don't want to be left out or fall behind or underplayed.

“I always believe we have three or four crossroad moments in our life. I think back to my early days and I did some film projects that I wouldn’t ever have even contemplated normally, but I was completely broke and needed a break. At the time I was always cast a mugger or a thug, and I thought, but I soon learnt that every movie I did presented an opportunity.

“But I think as you get older though, you realise the biggest battle is often with yourself. It’s not something on a film set, it’s not from behind a computer screen when you’re arguing with someone on Twitter – it’s from within.” Sure enough, Stallone has always

“We all should be,” he says. “It doesn’t matter how old we are or what we look like – we should go out and grab life.

Good habits fuel each other

“Not everyone is not going to be a star, but everyone wants the chance. It's the opportunity, and then the lack of opportunity drives people crazy, in any aspect of life. So I say, just let me run, and if I trip, I trip - but to not get an opportunity is the worst. So go out there and find it.”

Liverpool’s Metquarter celebrated the launch of its

much-anticipated boutique cinema chain, Everyman Cinema, which saw a turnout of more than 350 guests who were given a sneak peek into ‘The Other Everyman’, not to be confused with the Everyman theatre. The cinema’s four unique screens boast stylish sofa’s, statement décor, bar and indulgent food service. Guests also enjoyed an exclusive screening of much-awaited upcoming releases including Stan and Ollie and Greenbook. Current cinema hit Bohemian Rhapsody and old time favourite The Beatles: Yellow Submarine were also screened. Entertainer DJ Yoda opened the brand-new cinema with a special hour-long performance, which wowed the audience with a mash-up of some of the best music, film and TV moments. Crispin Lilly, CEO of Everyman Cinemas, said: “It has been an incredible start to our residence at the Metquarter. We couldn’t have been happier with how impressed our guests were and we look forward to welcoming more visitors from not only Liverpool but across the North west. We don’t want to be just a cinema, we want to make the cinema the big night out again, and we’re sure our unique offerings of in-screen cinema to seat service and social settings will continue to delight guests. 12

DARREN VISION The Parallax Challenge

I quite like a complex theory, but

this is a pretty easy one. If you have a straight stick and you throw it into a stream the stick looks bent under the water. As you move around it the angle changes ... so the stick that you know to be straight can also be seen as bent. Physicists refer to this phenomenon as the parallax.

reading this) but I genuinely believe that two people can hold different and conflicting views ... whilst both are simultaneously true. Truth is very often a feeling or an instinct ... it could even be your belief system or your faith.

Objectively the stick is straight ... nevertheless when looking at it in the water it is true to say that you see it as bent. So two conflicting truths co-exist at the same time. The stick is both straight and bent.

Those that don't understand that other views are valid are often missing a trick ... especially if they are a leader. To only have a single perspective on a situation means you risk losing some credibility because you may appear dogmatic. There are two likely outcomes to the dogmatic style.

The Parallax theory extends to people ... two people can take a different position on something depending on their perspective and their viewpoint ... both hold that their view is 'true'. Perhaps I am simplifying the Parallax theory to illustrate my point (so apologies to the physicists

Firstly, some of the followers stop following ... they opt out. But what if they can't opt out because you pay their wages? It is likely that they will stick around but it is equally likely that all you get is 'lip service' instead of genuine loyalty.

The leader that embraces other ideas and other viewpoints is more likely to be viewed as reasonable. So when the 'reasonable' leader has to make a change then the team are more likely to accept it. Change Management is something you do 'with' people not 'to' people. The manager or leader that works with their people will get more cooperation than those who don't. I think the Parallax theory falls into the easy to understand category ... but if you like a complex theory do a quick google search for Schrödinger's Cat ... that will truly blow your mind.

HUGE DEMAND TO SUPPORT WOMEN’S PROJECTS ACROSS MERSEYSIDE inevitably face the prospect of being disappointed.

Latest figures from the Merseyside Women’s Fund show the real need to support community projects working to benefit women and girls across our region.  Earlier this year the Community Foundation for Merseyside (CFM) announced the launch of the new Merseyside Women’s fund after its national membership body, UK Community Foundations (UKCF), secured a record £3.4 million award from the DCMS Tampon Tax Scheme. The Community Foundation for Merseyside received approximately £70,000 from this allocation to enable the launch of the new Merseyside Women’s Fund and ultimately aims to raise £1 million to help support local women. Launched in September, the fund invited applications for grants between £5,000 and £10,000 to support community projects that help benefit women and girls across Merseyside. But a high number of requests means that many applicants 18

The fund was significantly oversubscribed with bids of over £479,000 for a pot worth £72,000. Chief Executive for the Community Foundation for Merseyside, Rae Brooke, said: “In response to the first round of funding available to women’s projects through the Merseyside Women’s Fund, the Community Foundation for Merseyside have received an overwhelming response from applicants, being five times greater than the current budget available.”

Foundation for Merseyside, echoed Rae’s thoughts, saying: “Each application will now be thoroughly checked and assessed by our programmes team. Our expert panel will then have the difficult task of choosing to fund those projects that they believe will have the greatest impact.” “In order to achieve the ambitions and needs of women and girls in Merseyside, we encourage more philanthropists, organisations and individuals to get behind this fund and commit their support.” The panel will sit on December 17th, any donations prior to the panel will help us support more projects.

“This demonstrates the real need for this fund and reinforces how by coming together we can achieve so much more. Donations now towards the Merseyside Women’s Fund will have an immediate positive impact benefiting the lives of women and girls for years to come.”

MANDELA FAMILY TO VISIT LIVERPOOL The family of revolutionary leader

Nelson Mandela have announced they will be heading to Liverpool this year when work is set to start on a tribute to the Freeman of the City.

The former President’s eldest daughter Dr Makaziwe ‘Maki’ Mandela and his granddaughter Tukwini Mandela, will visit Princes Park on Monday 11 February 2019 – giving their seal of approval and allowing work to officially start on the permanent memorial to the revered freedom fighter. The installation will reflect Mandela’s life, his love of gardens and horticulture, his teaching and passion for equality and humanity. The three day visit, which has been organised by the Mandela8 group in partnership with the city council, will also see the family members visit a number of community projects as well as taking part in a special civic reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Christine Banks, and a fundraising event hosted by the TUC, which will see proceeds go towards the development of the memorial.

20

significant to the family that we are marking that occasion in Liverpool, alongside the start of works on site for the Mandela8 memorial. We look forward to meeting those involved in supporting South Africa’s struggle against Apartheid, and continuing our dialogue about educational opportunity.” Lynn Collins, Mandela8 Chair, said: “Our city has such a strong connection and history with the campaign to free Mandela, a campaign which brought community activists and trades unionists together with one voice. This visit is a chance for us to show Madiba’s family the solidarity and support of our city, to ensure the legacy, values and ideals of their loved one are formally marked here, and to begin the work to build our ongoing educational programme with their support and guidance.

Tukwini Mandela will be coming to the city next year and we look forward to giving them a warm Liverpool welcome. “The city council and Mandela8 have been working closely with Dr Maki for some time on the memorial project, and we know how touched they are that this tribute will be taking centre stage in one of our beautiful green spaces.

“At a time when our city has been regularly called on to show its opposition to racism, fascism and xenophobia in all its forms, the visit and chance to celebrate the life of Mandela couldn’t be more appropriate in uniting us all.” Sonia Bassey, Director and one of the founding members of Mandela8 said: “This visit represents so much to our community, Mandela8 and me personally as one of the founding members along with Stephen Nze.

Dr Makaziwe Mandela said: “I am delighted to be invited to the city of Liverpool, a city which honoured my Father with the Freedom of the City in 1994, a city whose links with South Africa are longstanding and whose communities have stood alongside South Africa, fighting injustice and Anti-Apartheid.

“Our political education and passion for equality was founded on the struggles of Liverpool 8 and South Africa, in particular the suffering Nelson Mandela endured in his fight for equality, and the tenacity and deep rooted passion he showed for people and his country. It is a special honour for us that Dr Maki and Tukwini will be visiting our community and hearing about our struggles from activists in our community who supported AntiApartheid.”

“Most importantly the visit will mark the 29 year anniversary of my father’s release from prison. It is

Liverpool’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “We’re delighted Dr Maki and

“To have them here in person to kick-start the beginning of the work on the installation means a huge amount, and will be an opportunity for us to once again reflect on Mandela’s unforgettable humanitarian achievements.” The Mandela8 group also aims to reinstate a bridge link in the Grade II* park which would link the mainland to the lake island. The area around the memorial will also provide space for learning, events and reflection. Plans are in place to integrate some of Nelson Mandela’s iconic words into the artwork, in a way which communicates his messages and relevance to Toxteth, Liverpool and wider community today.

the Mayoral Charter in 2017 works to support mums in Liverpool and normalise breastfeeding in public places. Today, the Liverpool Bambis group is calling upon all businesses across the city to display the Breastfeeding Mayoral Quality Mark. Speaking about the partnership, Hazel Patterson, local authorities service manager, said: “We are delighted to have Arriva on board to support our vision of a breastfeeding friendly Liverpool.

ARRIVA SIGNS MAYORAL CHARTER TO PROMOTE BREASTFEEDING FRIENDLY ZONES ON BOARD ITS BUSES

A rriva is one of the first bus

companies in Merseyside to display breastfeeding friendly posters and stickers on board its buses, after signing the Liverpool Mayoral Charter. Recently community breastfeeding support group, Liverpool Bambis presented Arriva North West with a certificate of recognition.

“There are still so many negative connotations that surround women breastfeeding in public which can often cause anxiety for mums who are simply trying to feed their babies. This partnership, is a first of its kind for us and is vital to help make our vision come to life: a Liverpool which encourages a breastfeeding friendly culture.” To celebrate the partnership, a presentation took place at the Wavertree Children’s Centre, where Arriva North West & Wales head of marketing, and mum of two, Lisa Pearson accepted the certificate on behalf of the bus operator. Lisa commented: “We are incredibly proud to be

supporting the Bambis group and displaying the breastfeeding friendly stickers on our buses. “As a parent I strongly believe it is important for us to create a positive environment for all mums who use our buses, especially those who may feel nervous during their time as a breastfeeding parent. We hope that these signs will make mums feel more comfortable when boarding our buses without the fear of being judged, and we would encourage all business across the city to join us on this transformative process.” The Liverpool Bambis group first began providing services to women across Liverpool in 2006 and since then have supported over 20,000 women. Hazel added: “As Liverpool has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the country, we are determined to reduce the stigma in our city and we hope that all businesses will follow in Arriva’s footsteps and sign the Breastfeeding Mayoral Charter.” For more information about the Liverpool Bambis Mayoral Charter please visit: liverpoolbambis.co.uk/.

The presentation rewarded Arriva’s ongoing commitment to breaking down taboos and removing any stigma around breastfeeding in public, after it signed the Mayoral Charter in August. Following this, Arriva fitted over 600 buses across Merseyside with the Liverpool Bambis sticker, alongside posters to communicate that its buses are breastfeeding friendly zones. Joanna: I love Peanut Butter Im obsessed with it and Ive just discovered peanut butter Jelly Sandwiches ! Yikes. I feel bad for about 10 minutes and then continue to eat the peanut butter..... Laura: I tend to always eat well in the day time but at night I love to dive in the chocolate cupboard. I’d

say a bad day would consist- 4 bars of chocolate at the end of the night hah! I do feel guilty yes, I think more so, because I’ve been so good all day and then completely ruin it right at the end! Rob: Chocolate If I could I would eat it for three meals a day. Thornton's Continentals for breakfast, lunch and tea! But I never feel guilty about anything I eat. It's a really destructive mindset and has got me in to trouble before. So if you eat something really high in calories, accept it, forgive yourself and move on and your next meal go back to your healthy eating. Do you find Any pressure to look a certain way for fashion shows? Joanna: I want to feel confident and by being the healthiest I can be. There is pressure for sure, It’s important to keep a level head and to focus on your self and not compare yourself to others. The thing Is, beauty is subjective,so one look not is better than another, Everyone is beautiful. Laura: I’ve always wanted to model in fashion shows but was put off as I never thought I’d be tall enough. I just wish I’d have started modelling in fashion shows when I was younger. Rob: I think there is though it's getting better. Plus size is a bad description as the average woman, whatever average is of course, is so called 'plus size' anyway. If a

person is comfortable and confident enough in their own skin to chuck on some clothes and strut their stuff then they should be allowed to model anything. And that goes for us men too. But you never see larger men. They are out there modelling but they need to be so much more visble. No body shaming in fashion please. Give us a fun and positive message for everyone Joanna: Don’t worry about what other people think of you, worry about what you think of you, breath, relax, smile and enjoy the ride Laura: The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return Rob: Treat everyone around you as you want to be treated. Pay it forward always. And always carry a spoon around with you in case there is a jar of Nutella that needs demolishing What are your  New Years Resolutions? Joanna: More Yoga, More Travelling, Appearing in More Films Oh and I’ve just Narrated A Novel For Amazon. Go check it out! Laura: I am a professional actress Singer and dancer and my goal is to work hard to become a household name. Rob: To work hard at getting a part in a TV Show Or Film

LIVERPOOL SUPERMODEL & BUSINESSWOMAN ABBEY TALKS FEMALE EMPOWERMENT

Abbey’s debut collection with Lipsy London has just launched in the shops and online, so we caught up with her to talk female empowerment, where she finds inspiration and what keeps her motivated. ABBEY ON FEMALE EMpOWERMENT Abbey think the recent wave of female empowerment is “great and thinks it’s about time!” She recognise the importance home life has to making children feel empowered and raises her children, alongside her husband Peter in a happy home environment so that they can be “as confident as possible and trust their instincts, so they can identify if they’re ever in a position where they don’t feel safe they know how to get out of there.” ABBEY ON pOWER DRESSING When it comes to choosing clothes that make you feel empowered and like you can take on the world Abbey recommends “A tailored sharp power suit! My Lipsy London black tux suit is perfect for this.” 26 34

And when it comes to colours that make her feel happy and fabulous, she says it’s all about “Black or nude! They’re my go to tones for feeling confident.” ABBEY ON FEMALE FRIENDSHIpS Friendships are key to helping you feel motivated and supported says Abbey who recognises that it is “so important to have strong relationships with your friends- there’s certain things you might not want to tell your mum, or your husband and you do need your girlfriend’s advice”. Female friendships are great, says Abbey as you “can tell them anything and they won’t judge you, they’ll support you and help you out. I’m really lucky I have just that with my friends.” ABBEY’S INSpIRATIONS  The key to feeling inspired according to Abbey is “Being happy and feeling confident.” Continuing with the theme of happiness being key to being inspired, Abbey “loves to see people doing well, no matter what it is- whatever it is that makes them happy. I like feeding off good energy and good vibes and I love to see people doing well and that definitely inspires me as I think you can take a bit of their motivation and apply it

to whatever you want to achieve.” In terms of her career as a model and businesswoman in the fashion industry, Abbey finds inspiration from British designers Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham who’s fashion empires are synonymous with the world of luxury British fashion. “Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham have done phenomenally.” “The Kardashians – you have to hand it to them, they’ve built an empire”. Abbey credits The Kardashians for their phenomenal global success and recognises that they have built themselves up to be remarkable businesswomen. https://www.next.co.uk/lipsy /abbey-clancy

IT’S TOUGH AT THIS TIME OF YEAR BUT DON’T LET IT GET YOU DOWN. Do you dread the winter months? Do you feel tired and depressed when the clocks go back and the nights start drawing in? If you also have mood swings, sleep problems, carbohydrate cravings, headaches, irritability, weight gain or feel you have little interest in life, you may be one of the estimated 2 million people in the Ukwho suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or the lesssevere form, often referred to as the winter blues.

soak up some natural light.

Nobody really knows what causes SAD or the winter blues. But some experts believe SAD – described by the NHS as a type of depression that has a seasonal pattern – is caused by fewer hours of sunlight during the winter months that deplete your body’s levels of serotonin – often called the ‘feel-good’ chemical – which affects your mood.

Get active Physical activity is widely thought to be an effective way to boost your mood, and there’s a solid body of evidence that suggests exercise may help to alleviate depression. Exercising outdoors, especially when it’s sunny, may have an even stronger effect on SAD/winter blues symptoms.

Low light levels are thought to affect the production of a brain chemical called melatonin, which can disrupt the body’s internal clock (or circadian rhythm). The pineal gland produces more melatonin during the hours of darkness, making you feel sleepy. But some people who have SAD are thought to produce more melatonin than usual, making them feel tired throughout the day. I See the light Getting outdoors on a bright winter day may help relieve the symptoms of SAD and the winter blues. Try getting out of your home or office at some point during the day for around 20 minutes or longer. And if you can’t get outside, try sitting near a window whenever possible to 28

Many people with SAD or the winter blues also respond to light therapy, which involves sitting in front of a special light therapy lamp – or light box – at home. These lamps produce very bright light, and using one – often during the morning – is thought to help boost serotonin production while suppressing your melatonin levels. If you decide to buy a light box, make sure it has been made by a fully certified manufacturer and is designed for treating SAD.

Many nutrition experts also recommend eating carbohydrate snacks throughout the day because carbohydrates help with the tryptophan-to-serotonin conversion in the brain. Try to choose complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, wholemeal bread and wholemeal pasta. These release glucose into your bloodstream more slowly than processed carbohydrates such as white bread and sugary foods, which may help keep your blood sugar levels stable. Also try to avoid fluctuations in your blood sugar levels, which can make you crave sweet foods and feel tired and irritable. Always start the day with a good breakfast and try not to let yourself get too hungry: have smaller meals with healthy snacks in between, and avoid anything sugary.

pack your bags Most people take a holiday during the summer, but for anyone who suffers from SAD or the winter blues it might be worth going away in the winter instead. Many people affected by SAD say their symptoms are at their worst during January and February, so it’s a good idea to take advantage of the cheap off-peak package holidays and get some winter sun after Christmas.

Stay warm Some SAD sufferers say their symptoms improve when they keep warm, so make sure your home and workplace are properly heated and wrap up well when you go outdoors. If you find it difficult to stay warm in bed, take a hot water bottle with you or invest in an electric blanket (never use both at the same time and always follow the safety instructions that come with your electric blanket).

Eat mood-boosting foods Many experts believe what you eat can make a huge difference to your mood, especially during the winter, particularly foods that contain the amino acid tryptophan, which converts into serotonin in the brain. Foods rich in tryptophan include bananas, turkey, chicken, fish, cheese, eggs, milk, nuts, avocados and pulses.

Winter has only just begun, and the shorter days may make you feel less able to cope with the symptoms of depression or winter blues. It can also be difficult to tell if you or your loved one is experiencing SAD, so the wellbeing charity CABA has tips available on spotting signs of depression and understanding its effects.

KATIE MELUA KATIE MELUA CHATS ABOUT HER LATEST TOUR, WHAT SHE’S LEARNT IN HER FIFTEEN-YEAR CAREER, AND WHY HER GRANDAD IS STILL HER BIGGEST FAN.

36

In a vast warehouse on the outskirts of the market town of Bedford, Katie Melua puts the finishing touches to her European autumn and winter tour. As I watch one of the final production rehearsals I wonder what’s next for someone who has already achieved so much in such little time.

I’m really excited about seeing what else is possible with records,” says Melua, wrapped in a golden Georgian robe, her chosen costume for this particular rehearsal. Behind her, as she performs, are beautiful projected animations of flora and fauna. This is as much an arts exhibition as it is a concert.

“Well I’ve been writing loads and

“I’m in an interesting place where

my music’s not really pop and it doesn’t belong in R&B and those lanes – but it’s not really classical, jazz, blues or folk either. So it’s sort of in this space that gets inspired by lots of different genres.” Katie’s ability to so freely and adeptly move from genre to genre is clear to see in the live show as she skips between

classical Georgian pieces, the tempo shifting alt-classical piece ‘The Flood’, and now iconic jazz/folk standards like ‘Nine Million Bicycles’ and ‘The Closest Thing To Crazy’ her first ever single. But in the fifteen years since that single’s release, which positioned Katie as one of the biggest female stars of her generation, what has she learnt? “When things took off at the start in such a big way, it did floor me a little bit! I didn’t expect it to be that big.” You can tell by the tone of Katie’s voice, that there’s a tiny part of her that still is awed by the massive success of her career. Her debut record has, at the time of writing, sold close to 2 million records in the UK alone and she’s one of two female artists to have seven consecutive top ten albums in the UK, the other being Kate Bush. Katie tells me she’s been increasingly involved in the behind the scenes elements of this tour. Once again she will be joined on tour by The Gori Women’s Choir and her band, but for this tour she has also teamed up with the BAFTA nominated directing duo Karni and Saul who animated the award-winning music video for last year’s single ‘Perfect World’. “Karni and Saul are brilliant visionaries,” she says. “They did such a beautiful job on the video. I can share my ideas and thoughts with them and then leave them to create their beautiful animations. After months of work we’re seeing what they have created and it’s even better than I thought it would be.” Speaking about the process, Karni and Saul said that they “loved working with Katie on her last album, creating the magic world of sugar and ice in the music

for me, it was a birthday concert, and they said they had 10,000 people there. I had been told there would be a pause and the mayor would come up and there would be a surprise but I didn’t know what it would be. And then he made this really lovely speech and gave me a big golden key!”

video for ‘Perfect World’. So when she approached us to help create a world and visual story for her brand new winter tour we jumped at the opportunity. Katie is a talented songwriter and performer and, though she knows what she wants, she also lets us have a lot of creative freedom… which we thrive off.” Joining Katie on stage will be a “more traditional four-piece band” as well as The Gori Women’s Choir. Katie’s voice rises in excitement when talking about the new tour. “It’s going to be a winter show but then it’s going to transition into spring. I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited and happy about a tour before.” ‘In Winter’, Katie’s last album was a critical and commercial success, and a departure sonically from her previous records, with Katie getting back in touch with her Georgian routes (she was born there before moving to the UK in 1993). The record was also coproduced and co-mixed by Katie herself, and marks a new era for her as a creative force in her own work.

“In Georgia, they are so positive when a single one of theirs does well, it just pumps you up with so much energy you literally feel like you’re floating. I think that’s what I’m happiest and proudest about, to be a Georgian.” Do you ever think you’d make it onto a bank note, I jokingly ask? “That seems like it’s a bit extreme! I don’t know. My grandad would be happy about that because he loves all that, when he goes to the market he’s always showing off about the fact he’s my grandad! In Georgia there isn’t that subtlety about success, if you’ve made it, it’s brilliant! You’ve got to be proud.” It seems to be quite a British thing, to shy away from one's success I suggest to her. “Yeah and I’m more British in that way, so it really throws me over when [Georgians] are like that, but it does a great thing to your self-confidence. I still appreciate there’s still a lot to be done!”

Since ‘In Winter’s’ release, Katie has become something of a national treasure, even receiving the key to the city of Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital.

With a stunning and engaging new tour and an exciting future, Katie should embrace her Georgian confidence, because this is an artist in her creative and musical stride. Katie Melua: The Ultimate Collection is out now. Katie tours the UK this winter, tickets from

MAVERICK SABRE ANNOUNCES ALBUM ‘WHEN I WAKE UP’ RELEASED MARCH 22ND 2019 Emotive second single ‘HER GRACE’ ft Grammy nominated artist Chronixx premiered earlier this week as a MISTAJAM’ JAM HOT and the new video, debuted by NOTION is a haunting, arresting piece of film exploring the narrative around domestic abuse; Speaking on the video, Mav says; "With each of the videos for this album I've wanted to tell strong, emotive stories that carry across the feeling and message of the song. Her Grace is about the unspoken unheard struggles of women that go unnoticed in society and this video feels like a glimpse into an inner battle within that." Shaun Grace, the director added; “When the opportunity arose to work on something powerful with Mav I couldn’t say no. I wanted to explore the day to day emotional and physical endurance needed to cope with domestic abuse and also the deeper, continuing cycles of conflict that affect both the abused and the abusers. I made the choice to cast my baby within this film as I knew how to get the reactions I needed from her comfortably. Even though I’ve watched it dozens of times in the post process, that final shot of the baby in the bathroom leaves me wondering what their future holds” Following the album release on MARCH 22nd, MAV will head out on his first headline tour in five years, with full tour dates including the Liverpool ArtsClub on 6 April 38

NATHAN CARTER

Liverpool lad Nathan Carter has become an Irish Country-pop star taking the country by storm, having 4 number one albums under his belt, beating the likes of Drake and Beyonce to the top spot and even performing for the pope during the summer Without a doubt, he is fast becoming one of the UK’s most prolific touring artists, with his energetic showmanship proving irresistible for fans across the UK. As one of Ireland’s biggest live music acts, Nathan is becoming a household name, with tracks

from “Stayin’ Up All Night” becoming hits, such as “Wagon Wheel” and “I Wanna Dance”. Having recently played (2017/2018) arena shows in Ireland at the 3Arena Dublin and SSE Arena Belfast, this summer he cemented his superstar status performing for Pope Francis at the World Meeting of Families event in Croke Park Dublin. Success has also been replicated in the pop charts; he’s previously beaten the likes of Drake and Beyonce to the top in Ireland, a monumental feat – with his last album, 2017’s ‘Livin’ The Dream’ being no different, going

straight to No. 1. Growing up in a house where Country and Western music filled the air, Nathan was exposed to classic songs of Johnny Cash, Don Williams and Dolly Parton. From the tender age of 4 years old, not only learning to play guitar, piano and accordion, which plays a vital part in his live show, Nathan quickly became head chorister in the Liverpool Boys choir where he toured the world and even performed in front of the Pope in Rome. APPLYING TO UNI FOR 2019? BETTER GET YOUR SKATES ON THIS WINTER – DEADLINE IS 15TH JANUARY! Studying a degree is a significant commitment and it’s a big decision, make sure you get as much information as possible over this Christmas break to help you make the right decision. Applying to university can be daunting, and if you’ve put it off and put it off – you’re really going to have to get your skates-on – so what can you realistically do during this Christmas break? We asked Dr Lisette Johnston , Head of School at ScreenSpace, part of the MetFilm school to give us some top tips… 1. Research your subject. Who provides the course that will best suit you? For example, there is a difference between Film Studies and a Film Production, so you need to do your homework. league tables give some idea, but also look at uni websites. Most courses give a module overview to give a sense of what topics you’ll cover across the degree. Are there similarities or differences in the courses you like? 2. Research your university. Just because a university offers your degree subject and ranks well doesn’t mean it’s a ‘shoo in’. Reach out to current students via social

media and forums – ask them about their experience at the university, try TheStudentRoom.com, groups on Facebook etc... also checkout the university’s Instagram account – get a feel for what people are responding to. If you haven’t already, as soon as you can book on an Open Day – you’re probably going to have to apply whether you’ve visited the uni or not at this late stage, but before you accept an offer, try to get to the campus – remember you will spend three or four years there, and may have to move from home, so you want to make sure you will be happy. · Checkout what the student union is like. · Do they have clubs and societies you are interested in? · How easy is it to get to class? · Are you on a campus or in a city? Knowing these things will make it easier to make a decision when the offers start coming in. 3. Think about your future self: The decisions you make about where and what to study are only part of the story. Find out: · If you get to do work experience · Are there sandwich course

options with year in industry? · Also look at employability rates for the university as a whole and your field of study. At my institution, 87% of our students are working within the creative industries within six months of graduating. This is very different to saying a high percentage of graduates are working – get the facts! 4. Know the process: Universities know how scary the UCAS application process can be, so every candidate who applies for our courses is assigned a dedicated Admissions Manager (other unis offer this too) who will help talk you through the process, from researching a course, to personal statements and student finance. Even if you aren’t currently studying a “relevant” subject, don’t discount applying to a course that really interests you. We, like other institutions consider all applications where students have demonstrated a passion for the industry/subject.

about light, patterns and digital art. “We are thrilled to have worked with a fellow Halifax organisation IOU to create something special that will allow our visitors to create their own unique designs full of blazing colour and exciting sounds.”

K I DS TO L IGH T UP E UR EKA! T HA NKS TO N E W DI GI TA L EXH IBITI ON Children can manipulate machines, pedal bikes and move robotic arms to create different light patterns and shapes

Eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax has opened a brand new digital and mechanical exhibition, Patternarium, which will run for the first six months of 2019. The museum, which is less than an hour and a half’s drive from Liverpool, makes a perfect day out. It gives families an exciting and unique opportunity to operate and move a collection of six intriguing machines, each helping them to discover the hidden patterns that surround us, such as energy and sound waves.

Aimed primarily at seven to 11 year olds, it will be housed in Eureka!’s innovative Spark gallery where visitors can generate vivid light patterns by pedalling bikes, experimenting with a giant kaleidoscope, creating glowing geometric shapes with beams of light, and shining torches to make an artwork on an enormous light painting wall. Eureka! Chief Executive LeighAnne Stradeski says: “We always do things differently at Eureka! and we are sure kids and big kids alike will love Patternarium as it offers a fun way to experience and learn

Patternarium has been funded by Arts Council England and is an evolution of IOU’s existing installation Volatile Light. This will also be included as part of the exhibition and features an array of LED lights attached to rotating arms, levers and cranks that weave eccentric curves, sweeping arcs and hectic scribbles throughout the darkened space. This other-worldly experience of moving light and sound produces transfixing overlapping light trails and patterns for children and adults to follow. David Wheeler, IOU’s Artistic Director, adds: “Patternarium is a fantastic playful experience for the whole family. As a progression of Volatile Light, it has been commissioned by Eureka! so that children can explore and play with the ideas around making patterns - reimagining what we achieved with Volatile Light for a whole new audience. Visitors can simply soak up the magical beauty of the light trails, explore the mechanics and technology behind them, or get more involved and even try their hand at making their own light art.” 45

ADVENTURE SEEKERS WANTED FOR THE 2019 WORLD TRAVEL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THE CHANCE OF WINNING $50,000 The world travel championship, known as The Global Scavenger Hunt, set to take place over 23-days between April 12 and May 4, 2019, is accepting applications for entry. Eager Indiana Jones-type of adventurers wanting to test their travel IQ against other travelers in an extraordinary around-theworld travel adventure competition that crowns The World’s Greatest Travelers, can apply at GlobalScavengerHunt.com. The unique event will test participants skills by visiting 10 secret countries that nobody can prepare for or do prior research. It is the ultimate Blind Date with the World. “Prize money provides inspiration,” says Event Director William Chalmers, “We want the best international travelers to participate. The 2019 event will find out if travel writers and bloggers know the world as well as they claim to; whether social media influencers and travel agents know anything about travel; and whether some of the world’s ‘most traveled people’ and Amazing Race wannabe’s actually have any real-world travel skills. Participating, and winning our $50,000 winner-take-all prize, will be the ultimate proof.” The 2019 event will pit savvy international travelers against each other visiting ten secret destinations and then having the competitors unravel a blitz of highly authentic, participatory and challenging culturally-oriented scavenges, like: meditating with monks, training elephants, taking flamenco lessons, cooking regional dishes with local celebrity chefs, searching out Lost Cities, cracking sacred temple mysteries, joining in local celebrations, and learning languages enough to decipher scavenger hunt clues. Trusting strangers in strange lands will be their focus as they circle the globe for three weeks. And a $50,000 first place prize and the title of The World’s Greatest Travelers await the travelers worthy enough to win the 2019 world travel championship. Event participation is open but limited, and the $25,000 per team entry fee includes: all international airfare, First Class hotels, 40% of meals, and special event travel gear. All travelers are interviewed for suitability and single travelers are welcome to apply. For additional information please visit GlobalScavengerHunt.com, or contact GreatEscape Adventures Inc., at +1.310.281.7809. (CST#2071053-40)

B U SI N E SS W I T H B O ND LIVERpOOLS BEST kEpT SECRET!

LUxUS NOW OpEN IN SOUTH LIVERpOOL First time business owner Susie Moran turned her passion into a reality when she launched Luxus Designer Boutique on Aigburth Road in November. The independent fashion retailer is now open Tuesday to Saturday, stocking collections by a number of up-and-coming European designers. The selection of items available at Luxus has been lovingly curated by Susie, to display a range of quirky, easy-to-wear, affordable designer pieces that compliment each other perfectly. The Aigburth boutique is the only place in the Northwest where you will find German brand Creare, a conceptual collection of structured, edgy pieces in monochrome and metallics, designed to work as an effortlessly complimentary wardrobe. This collection sits alongside quirky, comfortable, stand-out pieces from Dutch fashion house Boris Industries, as well as selected items from other European fashion names including Champagne, La Bass and Transparente. Susie Moran, owner of Luxus, said: “My intention is that Luxus will never follow the crowd. Fashion can be a wonderful way to express yourself and I’d like Luxus to be a place where people can find their self-expression. The range I offer will always be eclectic, enjoyable to wear, super stylish and, of course, luxurious. Many of our pieces are gender neutral, versatile investment pieces.

The Boston Pool Loft above McCooley's Irish bar in Concert Square is one of the cities best kept secrets. A man cave where where they serve cold beers alongside bar games and sports. There are English and American-style pool tables, snooker tables, plus table tennis, shuffleboards, pinball, table football and even PlayStations to try out your gaming skills on. AGM James Brackley commented "We have been open exactly 2 years now and being on the first floor above McCooleys in Concert Square some people are still not sure where we are. Once though they have been in we see them time and time again. Showing all the big sports events set in a cool warehouse setting Boston Pool Loft is a great place to hang out and wind down in.
