C
ellar 24 has opened its doors on Wood Street in Liverpool City Centre, a few hundred yards from the hustle and bustle of Concert Square in Liverpool’s Ropewalks area.
The intimate venue holds around 150 people and brings a retro vibe to the Ropewalks area. Opening from Wednesday to Sunday Cellar 24 is an ideal spot to take in the World Cup in Russia this month The venue not only hosts live music, but it is the only bar in Liverpool where you can play over 600 retro video games. Owner, Kevin Midgley, 42 said: "We have many unique selling
points, the retro games bar is completely new to Liverpool and we also have six pint beer towers, which you can't get anywhere else currently. With all the work going on in the Ropewalks we wanted to be part of this area of the city. Our offering is also something popular with the student and music crowd and this part of town is perfect for that.” The premises have been completely refurbished. With four booths, retro games, shisha, pool, beer pong and waitress service this basement setting is one not to miss. Cellar 24's walls have been painted by local artist, Paul Curtis, showing an aerial view of Liverpool's city centre and keeping with the retro feel of the venue.
basement venues that offer you a calm oasis away from the city noise and we feel we have achieved this here. Customers can also design their own gin, choosing a gin brand, tonic and garnish to finish, which again is something a little different.” Games available range from iconic titles such as Street Fighter to Mario Cart.
For job enquiries please email info@cellar24.co.uk
Kev Midgley who is also GM of the venue comes with over 15 year’s industry experience from well known city venues such as Modo, Igloo and Ink. “We have been looking to roll this idea out for some time. JUNE 9TH CHIN CHIN! HOW TO CELEBRATE GIN DAY
They may have called it mother's ruin back in the 18th century, but gin is the most popular spirit around these days. So popular in fact, it has had a whole day dedicated to it since 2009. That’s right, this Saturday, June 9th is World Gin Day. Thankfully, this doesn’t just involve drinking a couple of extra G&Ts on your own. There are gin events going on around the country to celebrate the day and get your spirits lifted (sorry)
How to Celebrate Gin Day Celebrating Gin Day is best done by diving straight in and experimenting with some of the drinks that gin has made amazing. Liverpool has some of the best Gin Bars in the UK , and don’t forget to check in with the Gin Monkey to get the updated list of the best places in the world to have a smashingly good cocktail! Distilled spirits have been with us for a very long time, and all of them have rich histories covering the sometimes mysterious origins of their use. While spirits have long been used medicinally, only one started as a medicine and then became a mixer for one of the most important medicines
in history. This delicious, smooth drink is distilled from the berries of the Juniper tree, and can trace its origins back to an older drink from Denmark known as Jenever. But gin has had a noble history as a medicine as well, or rather, as a way to make medicine more palatable. Quinine is the distillation of the ground bark of the cinchona tree, which produced a tonic that was capable of treating Malaria. Unfortunately, the quinine was incredibly bitter and gin was used to cut it. The flavor caught on, and to this day the Tonic in the Gin and Tonic contains the slightest bit of quinine to capture the flavor of the original.
within the city and offers its guests a warm and contemporary bar feel for those who wish to get to know gin that little bit more.
The Underground Gin Society, set on the beautiful and iconic Castle Street, was founded in December 2016. Since then its dedicated staff have enjoyed serving around 200 different gins as well as a beautifully mixed cocktail list, and premium world beers and spirits. This independent ‘hidden gem’ has enjoyed being a part of the massive surge in gin popularity
“It’s all about the journey” says Rakesh Daryanani, creator of The Underground Gin Society. “Of course we can all see how popular gin has become in Liverpool but what we try to offer is a welcoming setting in which to get to know gin and share the fun with our close ones. The team here are dedicated to great hospitality no question. We want to look after our guests and share their gin experience” Celebrating ‘World Gin Day’ on Saturday June the 9th, The Underground Gin Society will be showcasing even more world gins, tonics, and garnishes and offering guests free samples of different gin liqueurs as part of plans.
Well worth giving this beautiful bar a look, it may become your new favourite place… The underground gin Society 48a Castle Street liverpool, l2 7lQ

More women are embracing their shape...meet the Celtic Curves made up of Fiona Byrne Keogh, Emma Chequer, Rhian Thompson, Rachel Murphy, Charlotte Cullen and Nicole Quinn from Ireland who recently modelled at Manchester Fashion Week What is your message? All six of us came together at a point in our lives when we realised individually we were strong but together we were fierce. We have all faced challenges, we have struggled to accept ourselves and we've battled to love our bodies. Each of us are flawed but by supporting, encouraging and empowering one another, it's made the journey easier each step of the way. We seen how others have struggled with the same issues & that's when Celtic Curves was born. We wanted to show how flaws and imperfections are beautiful. That everyone deserves love, respect and to be accepted for who they are. We want to inspire confidence and self acceptance. Be brave, be kind but most of all give yourself the love you deserve. So you think you help other women? It’s so empowering!! We as women spend so much time thinking we are in competition with other women, that we feel we need to compare and pick each other apart. What we actually need to do is build each other up, support each other and inspire each other. When we start doing that, it is amazing how quickly you realise every woman goes through the same emotions, has the same feelings and insecurities. There is nothing more empowering than knowing you are not alone. We have an amazing platform to reach out and help and knowing that you've helped even just one person makes 10
you want to reach out to even more. This journey has been so beneficial to us all, it is so hard to put into words. We need and want to create a more empowering world for the next generation of women. Do you think the term "plus size" is being erased now? As the body positive movement takes greater strides in media and gains momentum with the general public, we are seeing more appealing terms of referring to women and men, who 10 years ago simply would have been referred to as "fat/overweight/obese". The term "plus size" was and still is a generic term used more by modeling agencies and brands for advertisement use when aiming clothing at women over a size 12. Due to this, as a group we feel the term "plus size" will not necessarily be erased, but may evolve and branch out to include less generic labels. The men and women who work in this industry use the term "plus size" for self empowerment and publicity to attract like minded individuals, but are not necessarily defined by the generic term. Celtic Curves embrace the term "plus size" as we are a collective of plus size models, but as our name states we have moved on, like so many other women, away from the generic label to embrace the term "curves/curvy." We as a group have taken back the power from our once "haters" and "bodyshamers" to embrace and love our bodies and spread that inner
found self love.As curvy models, we will embrace the term and label as it feels comfortable to us, but the term "plus size" no longer defines us. Generic labels are simply like the extra jiggles in our thighs or wiggles of our bellies, additions to the fabulousness that is us and our bodies. A label is not needed to define a person, the person defines themselves and 2018 can only get better for spreading the message that "Celtic Curves" carries "you are the best definition of you and you own the power, not the label someone denotes to your size". What do you love about your body? The Celtic Curves love our imperfections - bumpy bits and all. This certainly isn’t something that we embraced over night and sometimes we need reminding ourselves (everyone has bad days). We work hard supporting each other to realize our beauty, not despite of but because of, our differences and imperfections. This is something that we want to share with others. It’s so important that we as women (and in fact men too) help build each other up and realize that it’s our uniqueness that make us beautiful.

London, Vegas, Carlisle, Shrewsbury the locations for Lionel Richie’s summer tour schedule trip off the tongue like old bedfellows of the showbiz circuit (and let’s not even start on the American soul legend’s date at the Lincolnshire Showground). All jokes aside, mixing provincial, understated locations with a 16-date stint in Sin City is very much in keeping with Lionel, the man. In almost five decades as, arguably, the industry’s most energetic and enduring postMotown soul/pop icon, he’s always let me music do the talking. The glitz, the pomp, the arrogance – you can keep that, as far as the former Commodores frontman is concerned. “I can never understand those people who let fame change them, or those around them,” he begins. “I mean, I can see how it happens, but the adulation you receive isn’t a 24-hour a day thing. At some point you have to retreat from the crowds and take in some quiet moments – you have to find yourself again, although social media has made that a lot more difficult. “I sense some of the arrogance we see is just an act to look cool; I’ve never been a fan of that, when people are paying to listen to your music. For others, I believe it’s because we’re talking about artists who are, ultimately, unhappy with what they’re doing. Well you know what, if you’re unhappy, do something else!” he laughs. Now 68, Lionel Richie’s longevity of artistic creation in the music industry knows no bounds. Prolific enough with the Commodores – the band achieved nine hit albums and the same number of top 10 singles under his lead vocal stewardship – the Alabama-born performer went solo at the start of the 1980s and, to date, has released 10 studio albums and over 40 singles, with numerous chart-toppers scattered throughout his discography. “I think for as long as I keep enjoying the music, I have to carry on,” he says. “I’m almost 70 but I sure as hell don’t feel it, and connecting with the most beautiful people, singing the most beautiful songs, is actually a really lovely way to live life.” There’s the small matter of being busy with grandchildren, too. The 68-year-old adores the time he spends with Sparrow and Harlow, from adopted daughter Nicole. “They call me Pop-Pop – they are wonderful,” he laughs. “We didn’t tell them I was a singer until they
discovered it by themselves and it was very funny. “The thing with kids is they are so trusting and believing, and the world seems like a very small place to them. Anything is feasible and, well, if Pop-Pop has sold millions of records… yeah, I guess that works!” he laughs. Understandably, the performer, who is a dedicated charitable ambassador and has raised over £2.5million for the Breast Cancer Research Foundations, has slowed things down over recent years. He hasn’t released a single in six years and his last studio album was Tuskegee (the name of the town he grew up in), also in 2012. In a sense, he doesn’t need to. With a back catalogue boasting generational classics such as Dancing on the Ceiling, Hello, Endless Love, All Night Long and My Destiny, Lionel offers the ultimate soulful, jazzy jukebox that listeners have no reason to turn off. “I’ve been lucky enough to work with some wonderful songwriters over the years – and that’s all any singer is, the product of songwriting talent, be it his or someone else’s. “You know you have a good song when it sits on the mind; a song that you go to bed humming and is the first thing that’s in your head when you wake up – the soundtrack to your dream, as I like to call it.” Asked to comment on how the industry has changed, Lionel struggles to know where to begin. “Well it’s a completely different animal now. I never thought I’d see the day where records didn’t exist and positions on the charts were incidental. Those two things were the mainstays of the industry for so many years. “These days it’s all about touring, it’s about merchandise. Basically record labels are looking for other ways to make money, because it’s just not there in the music anymore. The quality is there,” he continues, “there are some great acts and incredible songwriters, but artists have to get out there and earn their dollar these days – they have to entertain in a bigger way than just allowing someone to play their CD. “And, you know, maybe that’s not such a bad thing after all.” FoR moRE INFoRmaTIoN: lionel is on tour in the north-west during June, with dates in the north including Shrewsbury, leigh, Carlisle and Scarborough.

With a following of almost 2million people, Antonella Brollini, affectionately known as Nelly,44, is one of the UK’s most successful social media stars who is watched by millions who love her hilarious and honest videos.
In an interview with Amanda Moss How did you get into vlogging? I had a 50p bet with my friend that we would both post something funny so I did a video with lipgloss and posted it, it got the most likes because she didn’t do one. And then people asked me to do another. Did you ever think it would be so successful Absolutely not. I was a receptionist in a GP’s surgery and I had to give it up as it was taking up so much of my time as I was getting so many requests to make videos.I had seen other people do ti in a bit of a boring way and i just thought I would have bit of a laugh Do you have a studio? No I started off with just my video 18
on my phone but then I got a bit posher and upgraded to a camera on a tripod. My social media team edit it now to make it look more professional. Do you have a millionaire lifestyle to match your millions of followers? Ha ha, absolutely not. I like a bargain. You will find me in the supermarket aisle looking for the 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 deals. Tell us about your review of geordie Shore star, Charlotte Crosby’s fitness DVD It goes 78 million views worldwide. I followed the routine, and It gets to the end and I thought, Nell, you've found the exercise for you. Then do you know what she said? "Well done everybody. That's the warm-up, let's start the exercise." That's the warm up? Jesus Christ I need a paramedic!' 'The warm up nearly killed me in itself, and it went global. It just snowballed from there really. you talk about a lot of beauty products and you are in the fashion industry with your successful boutique in Rossendale, lancashire. What do you think of the term “plus size”
Plus size makes you think of something bigger when in fact it is normal size. I am not boxed in my a label and plus size may make people feel uncomfortable or larger than they really are. The industry needs to look at it again. Is there anything you wouldn’t review? Sex toys. I am a mother of a 22 year old and I wouldn’t do anything that my daughter would find offensive. www.facebook.com/antonellauncensored

Bringing back to life, the music of one of the most creative and unique bands in rock music… When did you discover your love of music and how did you end up becoming most known for the saxophone? I think music was always a big thing for me from my very earliest memories. I was given the opportunity to learn Violin while at primary school in Bristol. I liked it and quickly found that I could ‘do it’, but I’m not sure I loved it. I heard someone (maybe John Dankworth) playing on TV when I was about 11 and went to school the next day and asked if I could learn saxophone. Amazingly, the school had a soprano in a sack in a store cupboard, which they said I could take home, and see how I got on. I knew within about two weeks that I loved it and that was what I wanted to do! When I was coming to the end of my school years, I wanted to go to music college, but no one would have me because at that time, Saxophone wasn’t considered a “ proper instrument “ so I headed off to London to do a Social Science degree and play saxophone with as many people as I possibly could. how did you come to tour with Dire Straits and any stand out experiences? I was making inroads to the London session scene and was getting called for recording sessions with all kinds of people, which was fantastic. One day, I came home to find a yellow post it note stuck to the phone. It said "Wednesday 10am Air Studios, Tenor Sax, Film score. Mark Knopfler. 1 Track maximum 1hour”. I went along, met Mark who said "it’s just a bit of sax on one track Chris, shouldn’t take long”. We recorded that track and Mark said, “Could you just try a bit on another track as well?“ I left the studio three days later having played on just about the whole movie. As I was leaving, Mark said, “Chris, you must come and play with the band …. The Movie was “ Comfort and Joy “ Playing Live Aid with Dire Straits was one of the highlights of my career. It seemed like just everybody from the music business was there, the most incredible atmosphere. We were actually in the middle of a 13 night run of shows at the Wembley Arena (part of the Brothers in Arms tour UK section), so once we had played our set at Live Aid, we walked across the car park from the Stadium and started getting ready to play our own show. As people finished at live aid, some came across and sat in with our show. This was July 13th 1985, which was also my 30th birthday. It was also a great privilege to play at the Nelson Mandela concert a few years later. Made even more special because Eric Clapton was playing rhythm guitar with us. Another incredible day.
CHRIS WHITE INTERVIEW
how come Dire Straits seemed to finish whilst they on top? Dire Straits came to an end some while after the end of the On Every Street Tour. It kind of just happened without any ceremony, really. The Every Street tour had lasted for 18 months and I think I had a total of ten days at home during that time, so at the end of that, everyone was looking forward to a break. Just didn’t know it would be permanent. I started recording with lots of other people after that, and also worked with Mark on a couple of his solo albums, so still felt in touch. Do you ever think the band would get back together, do you think the appetite is there from the members or the public? I really don’t think the band will ever get back together. Mark has a very successful solo career now so I think it would be strange for him to go back and play only the Dire Straits songs. I think the fact that so many people are now coming to see Dire Straits Experience shows that there is definitely an appetite.
20
how does it feel to still be touring the world playing the songs? I am surprised to still be touring and playing Dire Straits songs now. People still want to hear them and especially see them played live. The support from fans has been incredible and humbling. It is a testament to Marks Songwriting talent that this is the case. He has written timeless songs. What can fans expect when they come to see The Dire Straits Experience? We try to give fans the experience of what it was like to go to a Dire Straits concert. BUT, that doesn’t mean we present a carbon copy of one particular concert note for note! So fans will hear songs like, Telegraph Road, Private Investigations, Walk of Life, Brothers in Arms, Sultans of Swing and all the favourites, as well as some possible less obvious things like Once Upon A Time In The West and Lady Writer, for example. BUT, one of the most exciting things about working with Mark and Dire Straits was that things were different every night. For example, those places where there was interplay between saxophone and guitar, were never scripted; they went where they went, depending on how we felt each night. To that end, we have assembled a band of musicians who listen and play in that dynamic way, which maintains the live energy and sense of risk taking, which was such an important part of Dire Straits and I think is why so many people are coming to see what we do. Like Dire Straits, we also have a great lighting designer, so it’s good to look at as well ! Can you recall your first proper show? Cheltenham Town Hall was where I played my first professional gig, aged 15. My math’s teacher at school was also my saxophone teacher. He had been a professional musician in London for many years, before relocating to Bristol and teaching Math’s. One Wednesday morning in my math’s lesson, he came and stood beside my desk and asked was I busy that night. I said no, he asked me if I would go to Cheltenham and deputise for him at his gig at the town hall. I jumped at the chance. He arranged a lift for me so off I went and played with the Mike Slocombe big band. It was great AND Igot paid £7.50!!!! you have played with some true legends over the years, any stories you would care to share? I toured with Joe Cocker In Europe and America on his Just Around Midnight tour. This has another strange beginning, I had a call on a Friday from Barrie Marshall who promoted Dire Straits, he said, “Chris, Joe needs a sax player, can you get to Marseille next Wednesday?“ “Yes, I can do that Barrie“ “Can you play Congas and Accordion as well?" “I’ve played a bit of Congas, I haven’t played Accordion, but I do play keyboards” “So you can then?” “I guess I can then Barrie“ “Great I’ll let him know you’re coming “ I oved working with Joe. He was a lovely man and had a completely unique style on stage. I recorded one album with Mick Jagger and also recorded and played on a few tours with Robbie including the massive Knebworth show. It was a hoot. One of the career highlights was playing one gig with Ray Charles and I loved it. He was such a hero of mine. The gig was in the basement of the Louvre in Paris. It was all a bit surreal. The Dire Straits Experience Tour is heading out in may and June across the uK and coming to liverpool Philharmonic on the 26th June, did you ever work with any of the fab four in your time? The Beatles were a massive influence. I was definitely a fan, so getting the chance to work with Paul McCartney was immense. I was recording the North Of A Miracle album with Nick Hayward
at Air studios at the time. The producer was Geoff Emerick, the man who had engineered all of the Beatles recordings with George Martin, both legends in the business. Geoff was also engineering the music for Paul’s film Give My Regards To Broad Street, so he was working one week on Nick, and one week on the film. One day during recording with Nick, I had a call from the producer of the film asking me to go along to Elstree studios because they need a sax player for the recording of Silly Love Songs in the movie. I went along, was offered the job. A few days later, they called and asked if I would go in for a make up day, they had an idea for the scene and wanted to try something out. On the day, as I was sitting in the make up chair, I heard Paul going down the corridor, saying hello to everyone as he passed the rooms. He said “hello Barbara” to Barbara Daly, who was making me up as he passed our room. After a few steps, he turned around and came back and walked into the room and said "You’re Chris aren’t you? Pleased to meet you“ "Yes, very pleased to meet you“ “Do you know what this is about?” "Yes, I’m here to try out make up“ “No, I mean do you know what the movie is about?“ “Well, no“ At which point, he drew up a chair and sat beside me for fifteen minutes giving me a synopsis of the movie. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t hear a word he said! All I could think was this is Paul McCartney sitting here talking to me. That is Paul McCartney…. I had one of the most enjoyable weeks ever working on that movie. Thinking about Liverpool, I did a gig in Sefton Park with Nick Heyward in the early eighties. It was a very sunny day and quite a few people in the audience had been drinking quite a lot. The stage was set up on a little island in a lake. On about the third song, a lager bottle came flying across the lake and hit the trombone player square in the testicles. Then a few more, then a fight broke out in the audience and people were wading into the lake, heading for the stage. We were pulled offstage and never went back on. The tour finishes in london at the Shepherds Bush Empire; does that iconic venue hold many memories? I have played Shepherds Bush Empire with a few people, including Mark Knopfler and Jimmy Nail. Its one of my favourite London venues, it has a real rock and roll feel. The last time I played Shepherds Bush Empire was with The Straits, a forerunner of the Dire Straits Experience. We had a great night there for the Sarah Greene Tribute Fund for Breast Cancer Now. RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SASSY MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO a nother month has sailed (Or
abseiled!) by … once again living on about 3 hours sleep a week … but as mum always says – you sleep a long time when you are dead! So – I have to say the highlight of my month – in fact probably one of my whole life was throwing myself 452 foot off the Radio City Tower! I have lived and breathed Radio City for most of my life and loved every minute of working here – so when Rossie nominated me live on air to do a freefall abseil down the Tower – excuse the pun – I “jumped” at the chance ! So, myself and over a hundred others stepped over the edge to raise money for Cash for Kids Superhero Skyfall and it really was an incredible experience which I will NEVER forget. I was lucky to be paired with one of my great friends Kate Reilly from The Guide Liverpool ... and we laughed all the way down! All I can say is, I am glad they didn’t use the audio from the Go Pro that Kate was wearing and only the footage of our fabulous City! The most important thing was that over the weekend thanks to everyone who took part or donated we raised over £118,000 which I have seen first hand how it goes straight to children and their families in the North West and I’ve seen how it 26
I dashed from stage in Clayton Square after supporting more of my fellow abseilers on the Saturday to John Lennon Airport to fly to Allicante to go and host one of the most prestigious gigs I have ever had the opportunity to compere. It was a showcase of dance schools from England with a number of Liverpool based dance schools and Spanish schools too at the spectacular venue The Benidorm Palace. The event had been superbly organised and brought together by a truly amazing lady Sheila Brady from Enigma Productions. The show was seamless and showcased so many talented performers – and to see their faces shine to perform on this incredible stage and their family and friends glow with pride – it was just magical ! At moments it felt like I was hosting the Eurovison with the Spanish translator the lovely Aaron who was blown away by the talent that we have (Especially the Scousers!) so once again – Sheila – you absolute legend organising this! I did then have a couple of days to relax in Benidorm with my best friend Lisa – but think a little bit of partying may have cancelled out any sleep ha ha! Once again I was thrilled to be asked to present an award at The St Helens & Whiston Hospital Awards at the Echo Arena. This is one of my favourite events of the year celebrating the work of the outstanding staff across both hospitals and I always feel really humbled and privileged to be there. Once again – Kim Hughes who organises the event pulled a surprise out the bag with an appearance from S Club 7!!! It was also great to catch up with my mate Dane Bowers who I did panto with last Christmas – Peter Pan…thankfully he arrived without his Hook after playing the baddie at the Epstein! 24 hours after arriving back from Benidorm – I was back on a plane – this time for a Radio City trip to
Dublin! What a fabulous day it was … and it just clarified what an amazing bunch of people I work with. The weather wasn’t the best – but we had a tour of the Guinness Factory and a few pubs – so who cares about the rain! It was also the 4th Run for the 96 in Stanley Park – we always talk about this City – but this event confirms how when we unite – we are unbeatable. To stand on a stage and see the swarms of red and blue shirts – families, pets, everyone running this 5k to remember the families affected by Hillsborough always bring a tear to my eye ... and makes me incredibly proud. This year they raised £22,000 for the 23 Foundation and Everton in the Community. Speaking of football – I also had the honour of hosting the Everton Staff Awards at the Camp and Furnace which was great to be able to celebrate the work of the people off the pitch that are often behind the scenes. A massive well done to Tranmere as well in the play offs which is another accolade for Merseyside to shout about! I wonder what next month will be bring ………hopefully some more sunshine.

BEING POSITIVE, NOT PERFECT
GILL FELL WARNING! I am addicted to being up beat so…. deep breath….. and smile and be happier.
Walking through Liverpool
this week I realise that if you are the type of person to become irritated easily there would be a whole host of potential irritations in town. I have studied the mindset now for quite a few years and have come to realise that whatever we focus on we become experts at. Like if we complain all the time, we develop brilliance around complaining, if we moan about the weather constantly we then become award winning weather moaners. We become good at what we practice! So when in a place where many people gather we will without doubt get a jab of “you are doing my head in” like the woman playing the accordion at the same time as a brilliant young musician, it physically starts to hurt your ears, trying to focus on the good sounds as the smell of donuts smashes through the hairs in your nostrils to make a 28
cacophony of sound and smell, then visually you stumble across the latest clash of colours in the high street stores… Your mind goes into overdrive trying to sift out the good, the bad and the ugly, that was the theme tune the accordion lady was playing #notreally – you could literally explode with overload. Then you remember your mindfulness, ah yes, breath (You gulp in the sugary air) you breathe out negativity and try and again to breathe in positive vibes only. It is only when you remember the gorgeous bargain you have just acquired in TK Maxx that mental health can be restored. (Shopping btw is not a therapy !!!) Darn it !!! And this was a sunny day. So what is my point here. Please do not be surprised that you are exhausted after a little shop in town, it is busy with people, noise, smells, fashion faux pas, rollers, chip wrappers, building work, hen parties, police vehicles, drunks, etc etc etc. You think you don’t notice all of this but it’s there all taking space in your beautiful mind. So take care of your head space when strolling through town. Look for the wonderful bits such as, the amazing sale sign in your favourite store, the fashion sense of a good percentage of our Liverpool trendsetters and look up and see the Liver Bird in all it’s
glory in the distance. We are from Liverpool and we can say what we like but if someone criticises our people or town, oh how they will know about it. We stick together !!! Ahhh Brian Ferry (Saw him at the Phil last month… I can do the Jerry Hall howl – it’s on my cv.) We, oh great people of Liverpool, are known as the friendliest and kindest people – so let’s embrace that as we live our lives, knowing that that smell of donuts used to be the smell of hot dogs !!! (Remember our hot dog carts) Where are they now? What I didn’t hear was the cry of “Echo” We move with the times, but I would gladly pay an extra pound to pay that man who called us forth to buy the Echo. So well done my Liverpool friends, keep smiling, keep up the kindness, the fun, the joy you spread. Stay up there with your thoughts and actions. And wear what you want to wear. We are from Liverpool, so wear your rollers with pride, and know that we are leaders in fashion and Lifestyle and the friendly mindset Mission. SONIA’S RUNNING STORY!
I am not a skinny girl, I never have been, well not since the age of 8 when the dreaded puppy fat crept on me. I probably never will be but at the ripe age of 40, I can honestly say that I am finally comfortable with myself. I’m a woman and I embrace my curves. It took me 32 years to get here though. School was just horrendous, I was forever getting called fat, jabba the hut and other such derogatory names. I always dreaded doing P.E. having to wear a gym kit was humiliating and carrying the extra weight obviously did not help my sporting abilities. I don’t mind sharing this now, in the hope it will help someone, but I did resort to desperate measures in the school 6 week holidays to lose weight. I’d make myself sick if I had to eat in front of my Mum and if she wasn’t there I’d throw food away. I also took laxatives and although I did lose weight, it soon came back on, and more! Over the years, I have dabbled with a bit of running and the gym but never stuck to it. At the age of 33 I discovered Slimming World, where I finally lost the weight and learned how to keep it off forever. Fast forward to approaching 40, I wanted to achieve a lifestyle ambition. I’m actually a very hyper, bubbly and energetic character but always thought my body couldn’t do it. I had always dreamed of doing a marathon so I thought do you know what, just go for it, I can only try. I have a couple of dear friends who were being treated at Clatterbridge Cancer Hospital so I
wanted to raise money to help them. January 2017, I got my place for the Liverpool Rock and Roll Marathon through Clatterbridge and training began. When I told people what I was doing they thought I was crazy, to go from basically couch to a marathon in 5 months is impossible. This made me all the more determined! My friendhooked me up with her personal trainer friend and we went out running three times a week. My first run I actually managed 4 miles! I started going to Park Run of a Saturday morning and was quite fast! I was like oh my god I’m actually not too bad at this and really started to enjoy it. 4 months later I took part in the Liverpool Half Marathon and managed a time of 1 hour 55 minutes! Fantastic! The training after that was another story, yikes, it was so much harder, we didn’t know how on earth we would manage the marathon, but we did it, 4 hours and 43 minutes was my time. I jogged over the finish line where a huge group of friends and my goddaughters were waiting. I broke down in tears, I could not believe what I had just done! How on earth did I go from this little ugly fat girl to being a
marathon runner. Unbelievable! I went home, had a soak and then off to my local pub where all of our Royal Oak Family in Waterloo were waiting to congratulate me with music, drinks and a huge banner, I was just speechless. The support and encouragement I had on this journey was unreal. I was up dancing until 1.30am after that, the greatest feeling in the world. I have never felt so proud of myself. Not only for completing the marathon but I raised £1800 for Clatterbridge Hospital too. So, I vowed to never run a marathon again BUT I now have the bug. Running gives me an escape, it makes me feel fantastic on the inside and out. It’s amazing for the body, mind and soul. I’ve just completed my second half marathon and next week I’m doing the Liverpool Rock and Roll Marathon again. I get called Florence Gump and Pocket Rocket (I’m only 5ft 0.6”). I am now a member of Moorside Park Running Club in Crosby where I have met the most brilliant friends. Not only that, myself and one of my lifelong friends, Sarah Edey, took a Run Leaders Course together. We are now qualified run leaders and have now started our very own running club on Rimrose Valley in Litherland. I want to help others achieve what I have. There are loads of run clubs out there and if you are only just starting they have couch to 5k courses. Also find a Park Run near you, you can walk or run this and seeing yourself improve week to week is just brilliant. What I would say is if you’ve always wanted to give it a go, start now. I really wish i had discovered that I could do this sooner, I could have achieved so much more and had so many more medals!!! We can all do anything we put our minds to, we just need the belief and confidence to just go for it. If I can do this, anyone can. 31

LIVERPOOL HAS BEEN NAMED AS ONE OF THE CHEAPEST CITIES FOR STUDENTS AND GRADUATES TO LIVE
• A new study maps the average graduate salary one year after leaving University against the cost of living and rental prices throughout the University cities of England. • Big names Liverpool and Lincoln are the 2nd and 3rd most affordable cities, with the winner being Stokeon-Trent. • The average graduate from England will earn a salary of just £18,244 one year after leaving University. With exam season in full flow and
graduation just weeks away, there is no better time to announce the cheapest cities in England to live and work in. And it is good news for students and recent graduates of Staffordshire University; the latest figures analysed by Propillo.com indicate that it is the most affordable University city to live in, in the whole of England. Taking the average cost of rental accommodation and cost of living into account, Stoke-on-Trent leaves graduates with the most disposable income each month.
Indeed in Stoke-on-Trent, an individual earning the average firstyear graduate salary of £18,244 would have a healthy £242.27 left in savings each month. That’s over £2,900 per year in cold hard cash! Despite being a big city in England, Liverpool comes second on the list as one of the most affordable cities to live in. With average rental costs of £503 per month and the cost of living being £721.83 per month, graduates earning £18,244 per annum will have £183.10 per month left as savings. That’s £2,197.20 per year!

Wrexham glyndŵr university is holding an open Day June 9, designed to give prospective students a taste of what it's like to study at Wrexham glyndŵr and a chance to learn much more about the wide variety of degree programmes available, what the campus has to offer as well as being able to meet with course staff and current students.
Lianne Vernon is an engineering student who visited an Open Day, unsure if higher education was for her and is now in her third year. She liked what she saw at the Open Day, spoke with staff and lecturers, signed up and has never looked back. She said: “I came along to an Open Day, saw what was going on and thought ‘that’s the thing for me.’ I started on a Foundation year and I’m now hoping to go on to do a Masters.” Lianne credits the support lecturers on her course have given her for her success – and for her commitment to her studies. She said: “The lecturers have taught me lots, they help to put things into perspective and talk you through so you see how what they are saying works in practice. They relate things to reality, so you can understand them.”
Ultimately, Lianne’s ambition is to apply her studies to Formula One. She said: “That’s where I’d love to end up. Formula One engines are 1.6 litre engines, and those cars are going 200 miles an hour – you just watch that and ask yourself ‘how?’ I’m going to start at the bottom and work my way up.” Students who are planning to study at Wrexham Glyndŵr in September 2018 on a full-time undergraduate Engineering degree may be eligible to receive a bursary which offers free Student Village accommodation for one academic year. Visit the Wrexham Glyndŵr University to find out more about our B Eng (Hons) Automotive Engineering course and all other courses available. For more information or to book to attend the Open Day

Officer, Deputy Team Leader of Urban Design and Heritage Team and City Centre Co-ordinator. Her 19 year career at the council has led Samantha to take a lead planning role in a number of major regeneration schemes from Kings Dock to Liverpool Football Club’s stadium expansion to the development of the £2bn Knowledge Quarter and overseeing the growth of the Baltic Triangle.
LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL HAS APPOINTED SAMANTHA CAMPBELL AS ITS FIRST FEMALE HEAD OF PLANNING
The mother of two, who has a Masters in Environmental Planning from Liverpool John Moores University and Post Graduate Diploma in Urban Design at Salford University, has also played a key role in refreshing the strategy for Liverpool’s World Heritage site, liaising closely on projects such as Liverpool Waters and a new Cruise Terminal.
m rs Campbell has worked at the city council since Autumn 1999 and has risen through the ranks of the Planning Department to hold various posts such as Principal Planning
As Head of Planning her brief will be to also oversee the development of emerging growth zones in the city such as Ten Streets, the Fabric District, the new Beatles Quarter and the implementation of the Local Plan
to build 35,000 new homes across the city over the next 15 years. Talking of her historic appointment, Samantha said: “I’m delighted to be Liverpool’s new Head of Planning and it’s a real honour to be the first female officer in this role. Hopefully the first of many more to come! “Liverpool is undergoing phenomenal change and although this presents a great many challenges in terms of which areas need developing and how, it also provides huge opportunities to make the city a better place to live, work and visit. “Liverpool’s World Heritage status is a fascinating issue to be involved and I’m lucky to be at the heart of many exciting projects that will shape the city for generations to come. “I’ve learnt a great deal over the years and I’m looking forward to using all that experience to continue to build on existing relationships to promote a positive, engaging and customer focused planning department.”
MOUNT PROPERTY - DARMONDS GREEN ANFIELD The need for large family homes in Liverpool is being met by local development company Mount Property Group. Darmond’s Green Avenue, a development on Townsend Lane in Anfield, consists of 11 well appointed three storey, four bedroomed executive town houses. The project is due for completion in September 2018. This development is unique to the area, not least because it was developed and built entirely by independent Liverpool organisations. The specification of the development also sets it apart. The area is in dire need of large family homes and there are currently no other new-build developments that boast the same scale and features as the properties offered by Darmond’s 38
Green’s. Three stories, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a driveway and a back garden with a patio will make these 11 properties highly desirable to locals with growing families, as well as to investors. The properties are on the market now, from £224,950, with purchase assistance available from the government’s Help to Buy scheme. Internally, the Darmond’s Green town houses comprise an open-
plan living room, kitchen and dining area, four generously sized bedrooms, a family bathroom on each of the three floors and a downstairs WC. COUNCIL NEWS When it comes to supporting a really worthy cause, staff at liverpool City Council have got a real ‘can do’ spirit. Recently council workers have been rummaging through the cupboards to find tins, cartons and packets to help people in need. The collection netted more than 1.5 tons of food, which will keep the foodbanks going for a week. The campaign also collected more than £600 in donations for the cause. It’s all part of Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson’s 42
support for the Liverpool North and Liverpool South Foodbanks through the Mayoral Hope Fund. The two foodbanks belong to the Trussell Trust network and are based at St Andrew’s Community Network (North Liverpool) and Bridge Chapel Centre (South Liverpool). They provide emergency parcels, including three days' worth of food and other basic items, for vulnerable families and people in crisis. Between them the foodbanks fed more than 11,000 people last year, including more than
3,000 children. Organisers warn that the numbers continue to rise and resources are being spread ever more thinly. Food parcels are typically made up of long shelf life items such as tinned food, jam and dried rice and pasta. The foodbanks often have an urgent need for long-life juice and UHT milk. To help, the council’s charity champions set up collection points in offices and other buildings including The Cunard, Central Library and Broadgreen Hospital. And the donations came flooding in. Simon Huthwaite, who is Operations Manager of St Andrew’s Community Network, said: “Our foodbanks rely on donations from organisations and members of the public. There is a constant demand so this donation will be crucial to help keep children and families fed. It’s great that so many people working for the council have taken the time to support the campaign.” Simon was on hand at The Cunard Building recently to receive the donations from Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson. Mayor Anderson said: “Liverpool’s foodbanks do a tremendous job and offer a real lifeline to people and families who are in dire need. Whilst I wish we didn’t need foodbanks we all need to support the great work they do. I am extremely proud of all our staff at the city council who have once again shown a caring attitude and great community spirit.” To find out more about Liverpool’s Foodbanks and how you can help,

RICHARD GAIR ARTIST & DESIGNER
44
Tottering on the brink of death last year, artist and designer, Richard gair was offered a combined kidney and pancreas transplant. It saved not only his life and cured his diabetes but proved the catalyst for a glittering new career in fashion which he had always dreamed of. His bespoke hand painted leather designs have been endorsed by big names in metal like Saxon and Iron Maiden. He is sought after by advertising agencies and wardrobe departments around the country for television dramas Richard Gair, 46, from Doncaster quit his job in The Youth Offending Service fearing for his mental health as he said it was making him desperately unhappy Over the following year he spiralled further into depression, fuelled by his deteriorating health. Added to his injury, he had responsibility of caring for his elderly dad which he continues to do as well as look after his uncle who suffers from learning disabilities, Richard says he put his life on hold, opening an internet development business in Barnsley Media Centre with the view to selling art online with his best friend to tide him over but this happened at a very difficult time for both and the business closed its doors. "I hid away for 20 years, “Richard said, “I was looking after kids who had a high risk of offending, I was acting counsellor, Mentor and Key Worker for some really desperate and often damaged young people; I was a sponge for negativity I was also a carer for my dad and my uncle was now showing signs of dementia. I was
on my own and so frustrated. One day I got a call that my studio was flooded I rushed home to help my dad, who was not physically able to fix it and my car broke down. I just felt despair, I was thinking, there’s nothing else that can go wrong for me. I just wanted it to end. It was like I was waiting for another pile of crap to fall on me.” “Then someone had heard about me and asked me to paint a Metallica design on a leather jacket, the result was actually very good. It was like therapy and I re-discovered by love of art and design. So, I set up GoGairy Hand Painted Leathers, and I was planning to do Manchester Fashion Week last year, but I was far too ill with complications from my Kidney Failure and Diabetes. Also, my depression was at an all-time low, I had to shelve the plan. It was like one step forward and 2 steps back yet again.” “Things got so bad that I started to recoil again. I put myself into a selfimposed exile. I painted and wrote furiously to try and ease the desperate feelings I had." “I was referred to Manchester Royal Infirmary where I was told all about a combined Kidney and Pancreas Transplant. I couldn’t believe it at first! The surgeon literally said that he could cure my Diabetes- a truly evil disease. He had given me hope; for me at that time, the most powerful force in the universe. “I set a goal, everything would change after the operation" In August 2017 doctors found a new kidney and pancreas; he underwent the life changing surgery “It was like I had been given a second chance - a new start” Richard said, “And I could
even eat cream cake for the first time in twenty odd years!” Focusing on GoGairy Hand Painted Leathers he sold a few more leather jackets, which retail on average £700, working from his spare room at home. He made enough to buy himself a Rolex watch, another ambition, within months and now he plans world domination. He works with a team of incredible artists, Bekki, Jenny, Lindsay and Pete, who he said “Saved the brand, saved my sanity and above all, had a big part in saving my life”. “There’s no one doing exactly what we’re doing so I am just going to go for it. After my ‘darker times’ I’m not letting up. I’ve had the beast on my back and it’s claws in my flesh and shook the damn thing off! I am so excited for what the future brings. I am getting commissions now. I have the team, the talent and the determination. Physically I may look drained but the fire in burning in my belly and the mind is full of creative ideas I am ready to develop. Eventually I want to open a creative studio; a place to fill it with artists, dancers. skaters, foodies, all kinds of creative minds. It will be a hub that people can come together to express themselves artistically. That’s the dream, along with owning and living in a canal narrow boat!” Richard has never married, saying “My confidence has always been at rock bottom, who would have had me?” He often turns this into a joke saying he is terrified of women! “But I am thinking now that I might be ready and who knows what will happen in the future. I am excited, I feel like the superheroes I draw. There’s no stopping me now”

DARREN VISION Moving up the ladder
‘selfish’ (not always in a bad way) ... they like to get a deal done ... be top of the leader board ... earn the bonus ... and generally be seen as an achiever. So their motivation is personal success.
P romote your top sales person to
become the Manager and you’ll get a team full of successful sales people … then sit back and watch the money roll in. It is true that a great sales person can become a great manager ... it happens ... sometimes. But it’s unlikely for one simple and compelling reason ... they are totally different jobs. Sales People and Sales Managers require very different skills and competencies ... and a different mind-set.
I’ve seen some really great sales people and the best ones tend to be ‘lone wolves’ … they have a winning style but they can’t always describe exactly what it is that makes them successful. They enjoy the hunt and often they enjoy being in the spotlight. They are inherently
On the other hand great managers of sales people get their kicks through the success of others. They nurture talent ... they can (and will) have their own interests at heart ... but they see the route to fulfilment through growing the skills and success of their team. It’s the developing, coaching and motivating that gives them their kicks. Top sales people and great leaders are just different ... they have a different DNA. It is true that to manage sales people you need to know the job and its best if you have a half decent track record ... this is where you get your credibility to lead. But it’s not necessary to have been a world-beater. So when your top sales person lobbies for the manager job be very careful that you don’t walk into the ’double disaster’. If the promoted ‘top sales person’ ends up struggling in the new role
their own bonus suffers … and a team will resent a poor leader … often you will get personality clashes and performance issues ... even people leaving. Then there is the ‘failure’ label … failure doesn’t sit well with a top sales person ... there is the indignity of having to return to their previous sales role ... perhaps they lose their mojo for a few months ... all of which can be avoided. You can have a good career without moving up the management ladder ... so make sure you create a career path for your high performers … that way you retain them in your business whilst giving them a status and a reward that matches their high contribution. Succession Planning is tough. Think hard about who you groom for leadership … your business depends on it.

After travelling, they returned to his native France and Gus embarked on a new career and life path which saw him growing his own vegetables whilst running a Bed & Breakfast with his newly wed wife in the middle of the countryside. Meet singer songwriter Gus Barreteau who adopted Liverpool as his home Based in Liverpool, 26 year old Gus is known by many as "the French Scouser”.
The couple went on to have a baby girl and together they started creating and exploring music inspired by their travels, their daughter and love. Gus and his family moved back to Liverpool to pursue a life in music. Where else would you go than where is all started?
Originally from the South of France, Gus Barreteau moved to Liverpool aged just 18 and spoke few words of English. Despite this he studied at Paul McCartney’s famous Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) and achieved a Music Diploma (as well as mastering the Scouse language).
From then on it has been a journey of open mics, writing songs whilst juggling a baby on the knee, collaborating with other musicians, gigging, wedding singing and many more performances at different events/venues
It was during his time in the UK that Gus met and fell in love with a Liverpool girl, Sally, and together they went on to travel Europe and Australia - with his trusty guitar performing in festivals & many bars & restaurants
Recently, Gus has recorded a selection of his own original music at The Cabin, Brakeline Music with the brilliant Alec Britts and is in the process of promoting his sound. He is ls working with the very talented photographer Robin Clewley.

Created as a way to bring together the fizzing, fun top notes of pink champagne and the more bracing, bold sensation of being hit by the sea spray in Denmark, or walking through the deep, dark woods that cloak the country in a kind of modern mystery, Zarko Pink Molecule 090.09 Eau de Parfum moves straight from top notes to base notes for an ethereal experience that is almost mineral.
Top notes include elderflower, black orchid and apricot while base notes are mahogany, black wood accord and cream accord. PINK MOLéCULE 090.09 took its Creator 9 months and 9 days to compose, and this is where 090.09 comes from. • Fuses traditional French perfumery with Nordic molecular science • A feminine fragrance that feels utterly modern • Strong, subtle and mineral Zarko PINK MOLĕCULE 090.09 is available at John Lewis Liverpool, priced at £84 (100ml)

EDI TOR’ S LAST WORD hello Summer at long last. By golly I have missed you but that make me appreciate you even more
Lifestyle www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk
It’s a wonderful month, though students may not think so. good luck to everyone editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk sitting their exams, my daughter is doing her gCSEs. I recently was told that through @amandalifestyle challenge comes hope and it is so true. This can be applied to her exams because as soon as she finishes them she has the long summer to look forward to. I asked her how she wanted to celebrate and she said she wanted to go to our holiday home in Cyprus with me for a week. I am so eternally grateful for this and so elated that she would choose to spend time with me. It truly is a blessing to have such loving children. So much to cram in before we jet off though, the preparations are taking place for the annual liverpool Fashion and Beauty awards which takes place at The Radisson as the end of the month. I still haven’t go anything to wear so hoping to take inspiration from manchester Fashion Week which took place recently- see all the pictures from the event inside this issue. We’re now taking enquiries for liverpool Fashion Week in october and I just’ can’t wait for this, we have the most incredible venue at The British music Experience. Follow all updates @lpoollfashionwk and www.liverpoolfashionweek.co.uk our host is antonella Brollini, the absolutely fabulous lifestyle vlogger who will be our host for liverpool Fashion Week. If you’re on social media you will have heard of her with her 2 million followers. Read her interview inside. We’re also raking in the nominations for The Positive awards in September. So many inspirational and admirable people deserving of recognition will come together at our gala dinner at The hilton in october. our host is the ever so wise Darren lawrenson who also ran our positive workshops are our retreat in Cyprus recently. his words will blow you away so take a piece of his advice and read his column inside. he really can change your life. and if you want to hear more from him then we still have a couple of places on our next retreat 13-16 october and 17-20 November. another inspirational person I recently met is fashion designer Richard gair who I am excited to be working with. he has an incredible story and an event bigger incredible talent to share. for more information about his designs visit www.gogairy.co.uk. mindfulness plays such a huge part in my life. It’s so easy to bulldoze your way through life not noticing things around you. I stop to appreciate everything in the present, from the blossom petals floating in the wind or the blades of grass stirring in the breeze as I walk my dog. I am grateful for everything in my life. I love this magazine, I am excited everyday for all the people I meet and the special friendships that have been made through business. Savour every moment of the first month of the new season, it’s going to be beautiful
Stay blessed and grateful
