In this, my last letter as editor of Lifestyle I am quite contemplative. I visited the city centre on Sunday morning – something that I must do more often – and I was struck to see how bustling it was. 10 years ago, Liverpool much like any other city in the UK would have been more like a ghost town. There were shops open, but it was devoid of bodies except for a handful of hardened shoppers. Now, you must queue up for brunch and Lord street is much the same as a Saturday afternoon. Nobody could ever accuse Liverpool of inertia, since being the Capital of Culture in 2008, the evolution has raced along at breakneck speed. So much changes every week that there is always something new to see, to do, to take part in. From new eateries, to gin and beer festivals to evenings sipping cocktails or visiting one of the many quality theatres. But, what is it exactly that draws people to Liverpool? What is it that draws me? It is true that it’s a culmination of so many facets. But there is something else, something intangible but so strong you can almost taste it like a fizz against your lips – fearless love. You can feel it everywhere you go, fearless love for each other, fearless love for the city itself and fearless love for football – no matter if your heart is red or blue. Liverpool is an ancient city, who’s roots can be traced back to 1190. But somehow the city has never lost the hubris of youth, that never-ending spirit and enthusiasm for life. This fearless love is Liverpool for me, it’s the city that I adore and every time I visit I am imbued anew with pride. I have loved being editor of Lifestyle, I have had the pleasure of working with such a varied number of businesses along the way, that even if pushed I couldn’t name my favourite among them. I may not be editor from now on, but I have not gone from these pages altogether - and I look forward to speaking to and working with many businesses in Liverpool in the future.

REGIONAL ADOPTION AGENCY TO BE SET UP A Regional Adoption Agency covering Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton and Wirral is set to be established. It follows a successful bid to the Government last year by local authorities on Merseyside to create a new organisation to get more children placed successfully as quickly as possible. The new agency – set to be launched in January 2018 - will bring together a team of around 50 staff from across the four councils who will be seconded into the new organisation on their existing terms and conditions. Responsibilities will include recruitment, approval and ongoing support for adopters, tracking, linking and matching of children and the training and development of staff. Although the Regional Adoption Agency will have a centralised hub, staff will continue to have a presence in each of their local authority areas to ensure they retain close links with social work staff. Every year, the four local authorities approve around 100 adopters each
year and place approximately 140 children for adoption. Councillor Joan Lilly, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Adoption really can change a child’s life so I’m delighted that the Regional Adoption Agency could offer greater opportunities for children in our region. “Having shared resources, expertise and processes will provide enormous benefits to our children and young people, as well as the local authorities taking part.” Councillor Barry Kushner, Cabinet member for children’s services in Liverpool, said: “This proposal will mean we are able to provide a better service for children and adopters. By creating a regional agency, we will be able to widen the net of potential adopters, share expertise and ideas and make sure adopters and children get a consistent level of support, regardless of where they live. “This shows the potential of working across authorities and further collaboration on residential care, fostering and leaving care.”
F U ND IN G BO OS T FO R CO MM ONW EALT H SP O RTS Set up by the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, the fund is worth £10,000, and not-for-profit voluntary community organisations across the city are being encouraged to bid for bursaries of up to £500 each.
The funding is to be used for delivering activities around Commonwealth sports – with the aim of increasing participation across all age groups and working in partnership with the local community. Examples could be working with a local school to organise a commonwealth sports fun day, or organising an event to introduce people to sports such as judo and archery which they may not have tried before. The criteria for applicants are as follows: • The grants must be used for new initiatives linked around

Since going solo back in 1999, Melanie C has enjoyed 2 number 1 singles, 6 Top 10 singles and over 3 million album sales. Melanie C launched Red Girl Records in 2004 and has released four albums to date on the label: 2005's 'Beautiful Intentions', 2007's 'This Time', 2011's 'The Sea' and 2012's 'Stages'.

oyband sensation Lee Brennan, lead singer of 911, will be waking up Liverpool with a spot of Bodyshakin’ in LHK Productions’ dazzling Easter panto Sleeping Beauty at the Epstein Theatre this Easter. Heart-throb Lee will be playing the charming Prince Valiant who endeavours to awaken Sleeping Beauty from eternal slumber and he can’t wait to get his teeth into the role. Said Lee: “It's the first time I've worked with LHK productions and I actually cannot wait to get started.” Lee will be joining an all-star cast in the panto including Liverpool’s very own queen of stage and screen Tina Malone. So, what does he make of his fellow cast? “They seem cool,” said Lee. “It's always great meeting new casts and new people, I love it. There'll be lots of fun and partying I'm sure!” But Lee had better beware of the Epstein’s resident dame Michael Chapman who plays Nurse Nellie in the panto and is prone to staging some backstage pranks. He revealed: “I've heard that Michael's a bit of a lad with his pranks. I haven't got anything up my sleeve yet but I'll kind of confer with my other panto people and we'll get him back a few times!” Lee is somewhat of a panto veteran having played Peter Pan four times and Aladdin three times,he explained: “I've never played a Prince so I’m looking forward to that. Aladdin and Peter Pan are really energetic characters. The Prince will be not as manic but it's still gonna be a fun role to play!”

JOIN THREE CATHERINES, TWO ANNES AND ONE JANE FOR AN EVENING YOU WON'T SOON FORGET! "Divorced. Beheaded. Died. Divorced. Beheaded. Survived..." The wives of Henry VIII have been vilified, dehumanised, and researched and written about since the earliest days that that particularly gargantuan monarch ruled in England over five hundred years ago! Now Chalice Productions make their grand return to the stunning concert
room of St George’s Hall to present six modern women sharing their most intimate, hysterical and often heartbreaking stories of the one man that they all have in common. A man named Henry. "The Regina Monologues" is a fun, frantic and passion-fuelled contemporary take on a tale that we all think we know so well. Giving voice - after all this time - to the women behind the historic stories and iconic images, each monologue is told with passion, humility, grace and at times a devastatingly brutal honesty from the different rooms of the house they have all shared. So, go on… join the Chalice Productions team along with three Catherines, two Annes and one Jane for a fun-filled evening of the hilarious and emotional tales longing to be told by those six sassy ladies (un)fortunate enough to have been married to the same memorable man! The production will run for one night only at St Georges Hall, Liverpool on Saturday 15th April 2017. The performances will begin at 7:00pm, with doors from 6:30pm (via north entrance opposite the Library).
Tickets are available from: www.Ticketquarter.co.uk, priced £15 (plus booking fee) Direct link: www.ticketquarter.co.uk/Online/regina -monologues# Due to the limited run and Chalice Productions' previous successes both at the hall and further afield, tickets are already in high demand. Book yours now to avoid disappointment. This performance is not suitable for anyone under the age of 15 years. PRAISE FOR CHALICE' "WHERE THERE'S A WILL..." SHAKESPEARE SEASON **** "Brave and bold!" - British Theatre Guide *** "Delightful." - Liverpool Echo **** "Vigorous and enthusiastic!" British Theatre Guide **** "Thoughtful, moving and admirable." Bruno Mars stardom has not waned over the last few years, proof of this is that as soon as he announced his latest tour last November his fans worldwide went crazy and the entire out his entire global arena tour sold out, which is 1 million tickets, in just one day! Due to demand, extra show dates have been announced for Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester, plus an extra show in Ireland – so if you are not one of the lucky few to already have tickets you are still in with a chance – albeit a small one. Bruno’s tour coincides with his new album, “24K Magic” – which includes the worldwide hit single of the same name. The single was his first piece of solo music in nearly four years. Written and produced by

Shampoo Press & Curl, with additional production by The Stereotypes, the new single titled “24K Magic” (pronounced twentyfour karat magic) which is available for streaming and download at all DSPs. The multi-GRAMMY-winning Mars has also announced his highly-anticipated third studio album - also dubbed 24K Magic – which hit the shelves at the end of Novemeber 2016. In the first week it shot to number one, in what Rolling Stone Magazine described as a “Lush Nineties Throwback. “ Bruno Mars the 20-time Grammy Award nominee and multi-Grammy winner, is firmly in the halls of music royalty, with the likes of the stones, the who and dare we say it – the Beatles. Not often has one singer got it all, but not only can he sing and dance but he can write songs, produce his own and other’s musice too. Proof is in the number and he, so far, has sold over 169 million singles worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. Mars most recently dominated charts with hit single “Uptown Funk.” The worldwide smash is the longest-leading Billboard Hot 100 single of the 2010s, and is only the 10th single in the Hot 100’s 57-year history to spend at least 14 weeks at Number 1. “Uptown Funk” took home 3 GRAMMY Awards this past year, including the coveted Record of the Year award. The companion video for the hit single was also nominated for five MTV Video Music Awards in 2015, winning the award for Best Male Video. This past February, Bruno Mars returned to the Super Bowl Halftime stage to perform alongside Beyoncé and
Coldplay at the Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show. In 2014, Bruno Mars made NFL history with the second most watched Super Bowl Halftime Show, which saw a record breaking total viewership of over 115.3 million, all while being the youngest artist ever to serve as the sole NFL Super Bowl Halftime headliner. According to Billboard, Bruno Mars scored his first five “Hot 100” No. 1s faster than any male since Elvis Presley. As a singer, songwriter and producer, Bruno Mars has an impressive catalog of 22 “Hot 100” hits.

The world premiere commissions reimagine the original track, which will evolve into a mixture of large and intimate events covering the worlds of art, dance, music, poetry and theatre. For more than two weeks, there will be performances, installations, live spectacle and moments of surprise across the city, as the spotlight will
fall on Liverpool to celebrate their most famous sons in a way befitting of a record which broke the mould and changed music forever.
The artists will work in partnership with Liverpool-based cultural organisations to bring to life each incredible activity.
Conceptually driven by notable Artistic Directors Sean Doran and Liam Browne, the festival runs fromThursday 25 May until Friday 16 June and will see the involvement of international names such as GroupeF (the organisation behind several Olympic and Paralympic closing ceremonies), Mark Morris Dance Group (one of the world’s leading dance companies), Judy Chicago (iconic American feminist artist), John Cage (one of the American greats of experimental music), Jeremy Deller (Turner Prize winning conceptual artist), author Frank Cottrell-Boyce, DJ Spooky (American composer) as well some of the very best Indian musicians in the world such as Grammy award winner Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. The events will take place at locations across the city, including Liverpool’s Royal Court, Hope Street, Woolton Picture House, Camp Hill, Tate Liverpool, St George’s Hall and Aintree Racecourse.
The festival has been made possible with National Lottery investment of £750,000 from Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence scheme. The exclusive events will be a mixture of ticketed and free, and there will also be the opportunity for audiences to get involved and perform in a number of the works themselves. KC DAINTY IS BOUNCING ONTO THE FASHION SCENE WITH HER BRIGHT ACCESSORIES’ DESIGNS... Your design is unique, how did you come up with the concept? After realising I had an allergy to nickel, it was difficult to comfortably wear store bought costume jewellery; and although I have always loved statement pieces, my allergy stopped me from wearing them. Whilst on maternity leave, I decided to attempt making my own costume jewellery and tried and tested different types of fabrics. I found that the clear PVC worked best for the overall look I wanted to achieve, which was large statement pieces with minimal nickel. I begun to create these statement pieces and tested them without coming out in an annoying rash. Win win! Although my pieces today are not completely nickel free, nickel-free options are available upon request. I have enjoyed making pieces for myself, my friends and family, and have over time gained a lot of confidence in my self-taught skill. Tell us about your overseas customers? I've worked hard and have been very fortunate to create a growing customer base through the use of social media. Instagram has been a great platform for me to spread the word and showcase my pieces, and although I'm still relatively new to it, it has attracted customers from Europe, Dubai and The United States. I have noticed that each country tends to have its own trend, for example: our classic bibs have been popular particularly in The United States and pieces have been
26
ordered from and dispatched to customers in Atlanta, Washington and Massachusetts. On the other hand, my European customers appear to prefer the Dainty harness pieces. My customers in Dubai are quite extravagant and they love to sparkle, so my jewelled pieces are perfect for beachwear and yacht parties. As a new business it is extremely flattering and encouraging to see my work being embraced in these countries, especially as the majority of customers keep coming back to re-order more. Where do you get your inspiration from? As 'corny' as this may sound (I'll say it anyway!), having my son was my initial inspiration. Becoming a mother has been the most beautiful and bravest experience of my life, knowing that my choices will always impact him. Motherhood made me want to become a better version of myself so that I could raise a confident and well balanced young man. So I faced my fears and took a huge leap of faith to follow my passion in designing and creating things. I have always been passionate about fashion and am intrigued by its limitlessness of creativity. In my early twenties, I lived in the Baleares and couldn't speak Spanish, so local TV wasn't very entertaining for me. I used to to buy numerous magazines, cutting out the pictures of clothes and various fashion ideas. One of the walls in my bedroom was completely filled with these cut outs of
interesting, exciting and inspiring clothes. However, I didn't gain the confidence to pursue my own creations until my Son was born, so his arrival was a key source of inspiration to pursue jewellery making. My theory was and still is to 'lead by example' and today I get inspiration for my designs from all over the world and from the different era's and periods of time, for example, Ancient Egyptian jewellery is my inspiration for my collection of bib necklaces. I also love the idea of the leather harness, however I wanted to make it my own by adding my personal touches. Today I have created our jewelled harness' that looks incredibly sexy, yet remains so glamorous. I have also recently designed a new '2 in 1' collection, meaning there's not just one, but also an alternative way to wear it; ultimately getting more use out of it (and that's definitely the mother in me coming out). I have created chokers that can also be worn as headbands and bibs with detachable harness straps, so you get a bib and harness all in one. Today's inspiration can come from anything from healing crystals to Balmain. I feel my work truly represents and reflects who I am and the qualities I am interested in, such as uniqueness, style, charm and spirituality; and I hope through continuous hard work and dedication, more people come to know about and enjoy what KC Dainty have to offer the world of costume jewellery.
MO JOINS FANATICS IN KITAID BOX-UP
“It seemed like the perfect fit as we wanted to make sure that the large stock of shirts we had went to the right places and it’s especially great that a first team player has been and shown their support today and we can hopefully help put some smiles on hundreds of people’s faces across the world.”
Everton midfielder Mo Besic was on hand at Everton’s People’s Hub in March to help ‘box-up’ over 400 shirts being donated to charity by the Club’s retail partner, Fanatics.
The Bosnian international spoke with evertontv and championed the initiative, saying: “I’ve come down straight after training today and I’ve just been helping Everton in the Community with packing shirts that have been collected from fans that will be sent to people whocan’t afford to buy their own.
By giving the shirts to KitAid the retail outlet are ensuring that they will be distributed to some of the most under-privileged children and adults in some of the world’s poorest countries. During the activity, the 24-year-old Blue, who joined the Club in 2014, also met with representatives from the Club’s official charity, KitAid and Fanatics as well as members of The Everton Heritage Society -who collect for KitAid at St Luke’s Church every matchday - tofind out more about the partnership and where the shirts would be distributed. After the visit, Clare Dickinson, an Account Manager at Fanatics International Ltd, said: ”We have recently formed our own partnership with Everton in the Community to help support them with the great work they do throughout Merseyside and it’s through this that we heard about their relationship with the charity KitAid. 28
“It may not be a big thing for some people to give away a shirt but for the people that will be receiving them it will be a really big thing;
“
Earlier in the season Fanatics were made aware of the long-standing partnership Everton in the Community have with the national charity KitAid and it was then they decided to make the generous contribution. The shirts being donated are those that were given back by fans after a number of players changed their squad numbers ahead of the 2016/17 season, including Besic.
A big thank you to all involved in making these shirts available to us
“
they will play in them every day. It is a great thing for the Club to be involved with and I’m always more than happy to help support great activities such as this.” Everton in the Community has beenworking with The Heritage Society throughout the season to collect unwanted kit from fans on matchdays all to be donated periodically to KitAid. A recent boxing-up sessionsaw more than 2,000 pieces of kit sorted by Everton in the Community volunteers, members of the Heritage Society and representatives from KitAid, ready for distribution to locations including Malawi, South Africa and South America. BarryLenton, KitAid Ambassador, said: “Working with Everton in the Community has been absolutely brilliant and this massive donation from Fanatics will make such a difference to so many people across the world that are less fortunate. “A big thank you to all involved in making these shirts available to us and here’s to continuing a very strong partnership with this great Club.” Fans who would like to donate any unwanted kit can continue to do so upstairs at St. Luke’s Church, located next to Goodison Park, on home matchdays.

It's scary to think that as we speak everyone will be putting their Christmas shows together. I will remind you that I've definitely retired (OH YES I HAVE....OH NO YOU HAVEN'T)
1) Cilla the Musical – What exciting times ahead as they are scouring the country for somebody to play the iconic Cilla Black – I really cant wait to see who they find...it could be you! 2) Cilla Statue – Just thought you would like to see this, as this was one of the designs that Cilla's boys decided not to have as the statue. Personally, I love the pose. 3) Joe Longthorne – I'm excited to be hosting one of his concerts at the Epstein Theatre on the 26th May. Joe & I have worked together over the years many times, and he gave me the chance of working the London Palladium which was one of the highlights of my career. 4) Arise Sir Kenneth Dodd...and about time too! By Jove 5) Charlie Stemp – what a charming talented young man who is taking London by storm in Half a Sixpence. 6) Oliver Farnworth – who played Andy in Coronation Street and has disappeared off the face of the earth. How long will we have to wait to find out about his demise?...or is he still alive?

LIVERPOOL AUTHOR DEBBIE JOHNSON WINS THE RNA'S CONTEMPORARY ROMANTIC NOVEL AWARD Sophia Bennett's Love Song wins The Goldsboro Books Romantic Novel of the Year 2017 Liverpool novelist Debbie Johnson was named winner of the Contemporary Romantic Novel Award in the RoNAs (the Romantic Novelists' Association's annual Romantic Novel Awards) for The Comfort Food Café, She received her trophy from television personality and cookery writer Prue Leith and £5,000 prize during a star-studded event in Central London, compèred by author and broadcaster Jane Wenham-Jones. The judges called The Comfort Food Café "an extremely enjoyable novel, tremendously warm and enveloping, with great characterisation. It really came from the heart." Debbie was genuinely shocked when she reapplied she had won. She said, :" I just stared at people, wondering if I'd heard right - not my finest hour! But obviously I'm completely thrilled - the award was judged not only by experts in the publishing industry, but by a panel of readers, which makes it extra exciting! It was also fantastic to be down in London, surrounded by other authors, agents, editors and book people, having my 'Oscars' moment!" 32
She added, “My book is set in Dorset, and that was inspired by some really lovely family holidays we've had in that area - the first time we went, we loaded up the car with kids and dogs, and drove down from Liverpool not sure what to expect. It was absolutely gorgeous, and a very inspirational place - so when I started thinking about my next book, it immediately seemed right. I liked the idea of my heroine and her family moving down there from 'up North', and the contrast between the urban life they're used to and this countryside idyll. The heroine - Laura - and her two
children are recovering from he death of their husband and dad, and need a fresh start and a place to heel, and they find that place at the Comfort Food Cafe." Are there plans for any more books? There was a sequel - Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe - and will hopefully be another later this year. In the near future, my next book is The A-Z of Everything, published by HarperCollins on April 20. One of the main characters in that lives in Liverpool - I like to sneak it in when I can!

WHY BEING A BRIDESMAID IS A FULL TIME JOB The average bridesmaid spends 43 hours preparing for their friend’s big day
Wedding fairs, hen parties and dress shopping take up the most time
B EING a bridesmaid equates to a
full-time job, based on the number of hours that are required to fulfil 21st century bridesmaid duties, according to new research.
A survey of 1,087 UK women who have been bridesmaids, revealed that the average bridesmaid now spends 43 hours on wedding duties, which is more than a full-time working week. If this was an official job, dedicated bridesmaids could earn up to £326.90 a week based on the national average earnings of a wedding planner. Attending wedding fairs is the most time-consuming task, taking an average of 13 hours (including travel); followed by organising the hen party, which takes 11 hours on average. Accompanying the bride in the search for their perfect wedding dress was the task that bridesmaids spend the third most amount of time on, spending 8 hours on average, followed by dress fittings which takes an average of 6 hours. In fifth place was attending hair and 34
make-up trials, which bridesmaids spend 5 hours on. However, the duties don’t just stop there, an attentive bridesmaid will continue ‘working’ throughout the wedding day itself, carrying out tasks such as organising photographs, dressing the venue, seating guests at their table and preparing the honeymoon suite for the happy couple. Despite this, 74% said they enjoyed the process. The survey was released as Simply Be launches its new bridal range, with bride and bridesmaid dresses available in sizes 10-32. Prices start from £59 for a sequin detail bridesmaid dress. Joey Hughes, E-commerce Manager at Simply Be, who carried out the research said: “Evidently, being a bridesmaid is a big responsibility and requires a lot more time and effort than many probably anticipate. However, these duties are all part of the honour and fun of being a bridesmaid and most revel in the responsibility. Whilst some of the tasks like organising the hen party can be stressful, this tradition is here to stay and will no
doubt become even more demanding as many brides now opt for hen parties abroad, multiple dresses and outfit changes and additional engagement parties. “Thankfully, most of us are prepared to go the extra mile to ensure our friends and loved ones have the perfect wedding day.”
The Tasks Bridesmaids Carry Out in Preparation for a Wedding:
1. Attending wedding fairs: 13 hours 2. Planning and booking the hen party: 10 hours 3. Wedding dress shopping: 8 hours 4. Bridesmaid dress fittings: 7 hours 5. Attending hair and make-up trials: 5 hours

elcome to this months beauty column, as an avid beauty junkie/makeup addict the most common question I get asked is "what colour is best suited for me", the simple answer is any! With spring upon us this is the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone and have a play around with colours you generally would not reach for. What people forget is that when you talk colours, there are so many depths, hues and tones of colour, take blue for example, people instantly think 80's bright blue when in fact there are so many shades of blue from peacock, royal to Navy
blue, it's just about finding your comfort level when experimenting with these colours and this leads me to current trends for the spring season which is all about muted pastel shades, for example pairing a mint eyeshadow with a bold crisp royal blue liner and lilac lip is a beautiful combination and super easy to achieve, even a pop of colour across the top and bottom lash line like our model Chloe is wearing below, this will create definition to your eyes. Give it a try and you may surprise yourself! Makeup is fun, so dig those brushes out, get out of your routine and get stuck in!
WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY Each month Lifestyle gives a reader an opportunity to share with us what makes them happy. If you want to appear on this page email editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk
This month we catch up with primary school teacher and mum of two, Adele Gold, who shares her passion of running. 38
6 years ago I couldn't even run up the stairs and I knew things needed to change as I was nearing the 40yr old milestone. I don't profess to be a fast runner or even a competitive one but I want to be healthy for my kids (and for me) and I want to have fun! Knowing that I can start my run in the worst mood and finish it feeling over the moon! That's what I love about running. I signed up for my first race 4 weeks after beginning to run and I completed the Race for Life 5k in Sefton Park in a respectable 34minutes and from that point wanted to improve. I joined a running club and then made a whole new life for myself. Socialising with new people, making new friends, running to de-stress from the heavy workload of a teacher...and then I signed up for my first Half Marathon in Liverpool. The training was hard, but my new life was making me happy so I continued with it. Liverpool Half Marathon was the first of many and I swore that I would never do a marathon....and then in 2014, I signed up for my first marathon. The training was brutal but crossing that finishing line was the most amazing feeling knowing that I was now in the marathon club! On 9th April I will be hoping to complete my 5th marathon in Paris having done it last year along with the infamous Virgin London Marathon. Running alongside the London landmarks made the time go quick; talking to complete strangers with one thing in common: running! I am now a proud member of the Kirkby Milers AC running club and it makes me 'happy' knowing there is a
complete mixture of runners: beginners, competitive, slow and fast and yet with one thing holding us together: running! I try and run at least 3-4 times a week. When I am not in training I simply try to just 'get out' to clear my head! So I may do 3 miles or I may do 6 miles ~ depending on what is going on in my life. Luckily my 2 kids know that as soon as I get home I dump my bags, kit on and straight back out again...They know this keeps me happy. At the weekend I tend to run with a group of people as that's when I do my 'long run' which is anything from 10-20miles depending on which race I am training for. That's what I love about running ~ it's a family. Not long ago I went to York for a weekend and despite the freezing weather I ran 3 miles into the unknown! Half way through my run a female runner started running beside me ~ and from nothing we just got chatting! We didn't even exchange names but talked and compared races that we had done, training plans, places where we had visited (to run!) etc. The weather can be a problem in as much as I suffer from Reynaud's Syndrome which is where I get reduced blood flow to my hands and they become more than painful. Even wearing gloves doesn't help much but luckily we had a fairly mild winter this year so it was bearable. Besides that, I always go out in shorts, a vest/technical top and trainers regardless of the weather. I also have trail trainers as trail running is my favourite!
“
is knowing that I can put my trainers on, earphones in and pound the streets enjoying my own company, caught up in my own thoughts, emptying my head from the day and taking in the surroundings.
I prefer the rain to the sunshine
“
I love running around the perimeter of Calderstones Park as it has an easy trail path but some of the harder trail races can be brutal on the body! I picked up a calf injury at a recent race so running is out of the question at the moment which is a worry as I have a marathon coming up. Grumpy is an
understatement but thankfully I know the right people in the running community who can help with sports massages, advice and just being supportive. Running in the rain doesn't bother me and I prefer the rain to the sunshine as I suffer in the heat. I have
learnt over the years to up the intake of my water, wear caps and sunglasses to prevent my headaches. My body shape has changed in that I have toned up! My weight still goes up and down but I have lost inches all over and I know through trial and error the foods I can have before and during a race to keep me going.

Liverpool man leading the ‘Gump Challenge’ Rob Pope from Liverpool is taking the internet by storm as news of his ‘Gump Challenge’ starts to spread through social media networks. A veterinarian by trade, Rob has always been a passionate runner, winning the Australian Marathon Championships in 2015, but in autumn last year his running took on a whole new life when he embarked on a challenge similar to the legendary Forrest Gump’s mission of running across the United States…..but he’s doing it five times. With more than one leg of the run now complete, on 4 March, Rob hit the 4000-mile mark, leaving 11,248 miles to go to meet his target. Running a staggering 40 miles a day, Rob needs a lot of motivation to keep going and continue to put one foot in front of the other. He’s met some wonderful people during the journey so far, some who have run with him, and others who have helped with break downs of the support truck and offered cheers and encouragement. The two charities he feels extremely passionate about – the World Wildlife Fund and Peace Direct. To date, loyal supporters have given £8,232 through Rob’s

YARD & COOP REVIEW BY JOY LEWIS For someone who adores chicken, like the good Liverpudlian I am, I couldn’t wait to try out Hanover Street’s latest underground venue, Yard & Coop. As you have probably guessed their menu is all about chicken, which is made succulent due to it being brined in buttermilk, and super tasty due to their very own super-secret mix of herbs recipe. The décor is industrial fun chicken coop. My family and I actually sat in a large chicken coop to have our meal – fantastic.
They have cleverly designed the interior so you can happily bring a young family in the day, (crayons and a chicken to colour in is supplied as soon as young children enter) but you can easily imagine coming at night, sans children, and diving into a boozy milkshake and ordering the, “massive cock burger,” alas as it was a family lunch, that burger had to be left for another time. Instead we shared battered Brooklyn Rings and chicken wings doused in Buffalo sauce – the onion rings where humongous and the chicken wings were super fiery just how we like them. For main we got the children chicken & Chips which is a child size portion of monkey balls with ketchup for dipping. Served with chips and slaw. They wolfed the lot – so a massive thumbs up from them. I had the chicken with Korean sauce and chips – which was delicious. But I did covet my husband’s Wrappers delight, which is buttermilk fried chicken breast, Monterey Jack cheese, lettuce, tomato and our
own Yard & Coop slaw all served in a wrap with chips – next time I’m getting this! We will definitely be retuning, but next time the boys will be with a sitter, so we can hang around a little longer in this latest super trendy eatery, and find out what the empty bath at the bottom of the stairs is for. STORMZY ANNOUNCES HUGE U K SP RI N G TO U R Set to be one of the most highly-anticipated tours of 2017, grime sensation Stormzy, has announced an array of headline tour dates across the UK this coming Spring. The sixteen-date run will see him play the UK’s major cities, including the O2 Academy in Liverpool this April. The touring news comes straight of the back of a phenomenal few days for 23-year-old Stormzy. His debut album “Gang Signs & Prayer”, which hit the shelves in February through #MERKY Records marked a hugely exciting return for the multi award-winning grime artist. His brand new single, “Big For Your Boots” is took over the charts and currently sits at Number 9 on the iTunes chart having also accumulated over 2 million video views in 3 days. “This is the moment that I have been waiting for my whole life. I am now ready to certify my position as a credible artist and someone who is here for the long run.” – Stormzy. At just 23-years-old, nothing could have prepared Stormzy for his meteoric rise. The London-born artist has continuously pushed the boundaries of grime throughout his self-built journey from his ‘WickedSkengMan’ freestyles to now being nominated for ‘British Breakthrough’ at this year’s BRIT Awards, not to mention his hugely inspirational talk at Oxford University in March last year after being personally invited by the Union.

ADOR/REPEL EMPTY ORCHESTRA LP - OUT 14 APRIL Everybody has differing tastes in music, but whatever music style is your favourite, no matter who you listen to, this release is really something special, so good it will transcend music tastes. ADORE // REPEL are a four-piece from Wakefield, West Yorkshire; a fiercely independent band with their own record label, who are currently building their own studio, who operate without a booking agent or manager, and embrace everything that has always been so healthy about the DIY ethic. Of course, many bands follow a similar path. The difference perhaps with ADORE // REPEL is that, without resorting to the machinations of the music industry, in 2016 they self-booked and played two full UK tours, along the way selling every bit of merchandise they took with them; performed sell out shows in Iceland for a second time; played the Reading and Leeds Festivals; made the BBC Introducing Top Ten Sessions list; and operated a successful Crowd Funding campaign. Now, they are preparing for the release of their debut album, EMPTY ORCHESTRA. From the opening INTRO, a lullaby of calm before the storm, through MONTHS AGO and STICKS IN THE CROW, where the guitars have the sharpness of razor wire, EMPTY ORCHESTRA begins with a strength that you’d be forgiven for thinking cannot be maintained. The ensuing JIM HELWIG allays those fears with its unnerving and beautiful melody and, in particular, its tumultuous drums which rain down upon the song like thunderbolts; while the following and enigmatic // - part of which is recorded backwards - evokes the classic Stone Roses signature. It’s a testament to the band’s ambition that they are currently working out how to play this live.

pretty much any other iconic band or artist in the pantheon of great British rock music that you care to mention could never have existed it had not been for Charles Edward Anderson Berry. It wasn’t a coincidence that the first song that The Beatles ever played live on American soil was a Chuck Berry song, ‘Roll Over Beethoven’. No one person can ever be said to have invented rock and roll, but if anybody came closest then it was Chuck Berry. Much closer than say; a good looking white country boy named Elvis, and just a little bit closer than a beautiful gay black boy called Richard.
Hail, Hail Chuck Berry
I had already submitted my
column for this month a couple of days earlier, but when I got home from performing at the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards on March 18th and saw the news, I knew immediately that I needed to write this one instead.
I don’t want to even try to imagine a world without The Beatles, let alone what Liverpool would be like now had they never existed. Think about that for a moment …. What would Liverpool be like now had The Beatles never existed? THAT is precisely how important Chuck Berry was in the story of popular music and also in the recent development of this city, the official capital of pop music and spiritual home of its most famous, successful and beloved exponents. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath and 50
Just like the country boy in his own song ‘Johnny B. Goode’, a recording that NASA sent deep into Space to represent us all to whatever is out there, Chuck ‘could play a guitar just like aringing a bell’ and he was an accomplished player by the time that rock and roll began to evolve in the 1950s. His distinct style of playing and his famous duck walk

If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry’.

John Lennon
both came with a nod to ‘the Godmother of Rock and Roll’, Sister Rosetta Tharpe (YouTube her, she’s phenomenal) but Chuck’s lyrical style was unique, pioneering and all his own. He will be remembered for as long as Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.
CLEAN CUT KID
THE BIG INTERVIEW 52
Yeah it's great! The line up is so boss too- feels like there's been a massive effort put into organising this festival. Good to see this kinda thing coming to the North East as well. THE LAST TIME YOU PLAYED IN THE REGION WAS WITH COURTEENERS AND YOUR HEADLINE SHOW AT CLUNY – HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THE RETURN TO THE REGION? We will have just kicked off our UK tour so we'll be in some pretty good moods like! We really like playing city festivals too (live at leeds, soundcity etc)..it's like a big reunion for all the bands where we get to hang out and watch gigs together all day, it's dead cool. 'FELT' COMES OUT 28TH APRIL – WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE RECORD? We expect that all the fans who have maybe liked the music, but don't fully 'GET' CCK; will finally see the full picture. We don't make all-out-rock music, and we are by no means a straight-up pop act....so there can be a learning curve to fully grasping our vision. We feel the album is the missing piece.
“
YOU ARE PLAYING THE FIRST EVER HIT THE NORTH FESTIVAL – THAT MUST BE PRETTY EXCITING, RIGHT?
The plan is to do a bigger headline tour that covers more cities
“
FOND MEMORIES FOR THE BAND?
Mike used to go to Robin Hoods bay on holiday and since he met me we've been back loads. We live in the city centre in Liverpool so anytime we go over that way we make the most of the outdoors. The Magpie in Whitby, climbing Roseberry Topping, walking around Runswick Bay, driving over the moors..that kinda thing. It's not often we get to do mega chilled things like that, but the North East has loads of that to offer so we try and get it in when we can. Plus, Saul's dad is from Sunderland and our tour manager/FOH is from the area too. So we're pretty linked there! WHICH, IF ANY, OF THE OTHER BANDS AT HIT THE NORTH ARE YOU HOPING TO CATCH? Frightened Rabbit for sure. 'Painting of a Panic Attack' was one of our favourite records of
last year. 'I Wish I Was Sober' is one of the best songs lyrically I've heard in ages. We also wanna catch Slaves and Black Honey. THERE IS NO NORTH EAST DATE (EXCEPT HIT THE NORTH) ON YOUR 'FUZZY' TOUR – CAN WE EXPECT A HEADLINE SHOW IN THE REGION ANY TIME SOON? Yep. We actually spoke about this the other day, the plan is to do a bigger headline tour that covers more cities and goes on a bit longer than this one, probably after festival season. We didn't miss out Newcastle intentionally, we just got booked for Hit The North before booking the tour and we couldn't do both! We hope anyone who was disappointed is able to make Hit The North. EVELYN ONCE TOLD ME THAT SPRINGSTEEN WOULD HEADLINE HER PERFECT FESTIVAL – WHO ELSE WOULD BE ON THE BILL? If we're talking on that one stage on that one day... The Shins, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Courtney Barnett, Pinegrove, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltson, The War On Drugs, Youth Lagoon, Waxahatchee and Ryan Adams. I hope by some miracle we get to make that happen one day- that would be insane.
WILL MUCH OF IT FEATURE ON THE SETLIST OR WILL YOU STICK TO THE SINGLES ALREADY OUT THERE? Yep! We'll be playing the whole thing! OBVIOUSLY EVELYN IS FROM THE REGION – ARE THERE ANY OTHER PARTS OF THE NORTH EAST THAT HOLD 53

WORK - HOW COULD THE FUTURE LOOK? BY DARREN LAWRENSON
When I first used an ATM to withdraw cash I didn't think I was interacting with a robot ... but the ATM had replaced the Bank cashier, so it was a robot ... all those years ago. Its just common place today, but that was a major change in how we interact with our bank. Next generation trains will be driverless ... it's already planned and will happen. Maybe it will be taxi drivers next, the advent of driverless cars may make taxi drivers redundant. What about teaching, even language teachers say that language apps are pretty good at the job. And I already scan my own purchases at the supermarket. We are all being serviced by machines and I can clearly see the business benefit of automation, usually it saves money for the provider ... and often makes the interaction easier for the user. As robotics expands should we tax the robot? Stay with me. We could maybe use the tax raised to pay the benefits for those put out of work ... this is a discussion that Bill Gates has started. You could have a universal basic income for everyone paid from the robot tax ... but what would you do with your leisure time if robots took over the jobs? Without work it would be the death of aspiration, surely ... it begs the question "do we really value the work we do?" Work isn't just about earning a living ... work gives us purpose ... work gives us satisfaction ... and it gives us frustration as well! Work can give us status ... it can give us significant financial rewards ... it gives us social interaction ... and it gives us role models. Maybe we should value our work more ... the robots may already 56

HOWARD JONES with full band and special guests Hue & Cry ‘Stripped’ play LIVERPOOL – Hangar 34 on Friday 19th May
SHALAMAR play LIVERPOOL – Olympia on Friday 28th April
It was in 1983 that Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene with his very English songwriting, pioneering synthesizers and thought provoking lyrics. Along with ‘New Song’, The first two albums, ‘Humans Lib’ and ‘Dream into Action’, brought Howard a host of hits including ‘Things Can Only Get Better’, ‘What is Love?’, ‘Pearl In The Shell’, ‘Like to Get To know You Well’, ‘Hide And Seek’ (performed at Live Aid), ‘Look Mama’ and ‘No One Is To Blame’, which reached No.1 in the US. Howard has sold over 8 million albums across the globe and is one of a select group of British artists who have comprehensively ‘broken America’.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the name Shalamar became synonymous with the contemporary sound of catchy feel-good dance music.
JUSTIN CURRIE & THE PALLBEARERS play LIVERPOOL – Hangar 34 on Wednesday 31st May
“
After 22 years toiling in the moderately successful pop/rock outfit Del Amitri, Justin Currie made the rash decision to go it alone in 2003, spending the next four years fannying about writing, in 2008 he finally pulled his finger out and pushed the button on a solo career with the release of his masterpiece of maudlin, ‘What Is Love For’. His fourth album of this series, ‘This Is My Kingdom Now’, follows on from follow-ups ‘The Great War’ (2010) and ‘Lower Reaches’ (2013). Over time audiences have begun to divine hit-type hooks buried within the gloom and now flock to hear epics such as "No, Surrender", "If I Ever Loved You" and "Falsetto" with an alacrity some find surprising in an age where distraction from modernity's inferno is a kind of medical emergency.
It's always great meeting new casts and new people

Shalamar are best known for a string of worldwide hits such as ‘The Second Time Around’, ‘Make That Move’, ‘I Owe You One’, ‘I Can Make You Feel Good’, ‘There It Is’, ‘Friends’ and anthem ‘A Night To Remember’. In 1999, Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel reformed the group and began touring again. Eventually replacing Jody Watley with Carolyn Giffey daughter of Shalamar’s original founder, Dick Griffey.

next instalment from the promenade theatre tours from Lovehistory will now take place from Monday 3 – Saturday 8 April, and all tickets purchased for the February dates will be valid for the new performances. The re-scheduled tours will feature new stories, uncovering the tales of past criminals who were hanged for their crimes, those who were judged and sentenced by law, and those who carried out the sentence of the court – the executioner.
New stories will include the horrific 1874 murder of Richard Morgan, known as the Tithebarn Street Outrage, the heinous attack of a Spanish sailor in 1884’s Blackstone Street Murder. The tours will shine a light on the rivalry between the notorious High Rip gang and the Logwood gang, then learn all about the business of grave robbing as
Lovehistory unearth the details of the Resurrection Men. Judy McLean, Creative Director of Lovehistory, said: “We apologise to those who purchased tickets for next week’s performances and for any inconvenience, but want to ensure customers that their tickets will be valid for the new dates, and look forward to everyone seeing the new stories in the next instalment in April.” The promenade performances will take you into the dark cells below the grandness of the Great Hall, where those waiting to be condemned would spend their final moments. In the dark shadows of Liverpool’s history, visitors will encounter characters telling their tormented tales. Behind every dark corner lies a hidden story which has not been heard for over 100 years.
