Lifestyle EDITOR'S LETTER
MARCH ISSUE 71 A NOTE FROM OUR EDITOR
Hello lovely Lifestyle Readers! Finally it’s March – spring is about to be sprung, and as I gaze out of my kitchen window I can spy tiny daffodils starting to pop their cheery heads out of the mud. From here on in every day sundown will get that little bit later and the promise of warm sunshine is tantalizingly close. There is much to look forward to this month. On the 1st March is the Bierkeller Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, organised by Amanda Moss. Every year Amanda dips into the considerable talent pool that this city has, choosing the best and brightest businesses in Liverpool in order to recognise them and celebrate entrepreneurialism. On 8th March it’s International Women’s day where almost
every country celebrates women and their achievements. And finally at the end of March it’s Mother’s Day where we honour mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds. Within this month’s jam packed issue you will find, interviews with Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole, handsome chef Jean – Christophe Novelli, singer Chis Maloney and indie band, The Feeling. We have fantastic competitions, to win tickets to see The Wanted at the Echo area on 14th March and a fantastic package of cinema tickets, amazon vouchers and a Captain America bundle all from the Odeon, to celebrate the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We have beauty news, property news and a full page of “We Love”, dedicated this month to ideas of what to buy for Mother’s Day. Enjoy the start of Spring!

Lifestyle FASHION LEAD THE FASHION PACK THIS SUMMER WITH CHILDSPLAY CLOTHING
A
s the seasons progress the topic of fashion is always at the forefront of our minds as it is the artful expression of individuality and identity. A classic motto uttered when conferring on fashion when one season draws to a close and the next dawns is ‘out with the old and in with the new’. However this Spring/Summer 2014 witnesses leading labels in the fashion industry such as Burberry, Chloe, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Missoni, Paul Smith, Ralph Lauren, Roberto Cavalli and Versace adapt, revamp, update and transform preceding trends by giving them a contemporary twist or injecting them with a dose of modern flair and freshness so they are current but with a classic inspiration and time-honoured aesthetic.
Carefully sourcing collections from across the globe that they believe will be covetous in Spring/Summer, Childsplay Clothing stock a myriad of renowned designers including Armani, Boss, Gucci, Fendi, Roberto Cavalli, Young Versace and many more.

The world of childrens fashion is constantly changing and is far from ordinary or basic. Nowadays the concepts of quality, style and ethical manufacture are constantly empathised so parents are increasingly opting for luxury clothing and often select designs that reflect their personal taste so a ‘mini-me’ result is achieved. Continuing and developing the ‘mini-me’ trend for Spring/ Summer 2014 are labels such as Dolce & Gabbana and Paul Smith Junior who take inspiration from their adult mainline collections and translate them into new designs that are suitable for children. Luxury childrens retailer Childsplay Clothing takes the spearhead position in the children’s fashion movement which is increasing in popularity day by day and season by season. 9

The 37-year-old ballroom specialist has been a permanent fixture on our Saturday night TV screens for seven years now, as part of the flagship BBC dancing contest, but having in excess of 10million people watching his trademark Latino moves has only made him want to spread the dancing word further still.
hit the screens, you sensed there was a shift in momentum towards dancing because of it. It’s gone global, an incredible thing. And it’s not just Strictly: theatre, different programmes on the telly talking about dance… it’s opened up a whole range of opportunities.”
This year, New Zealand born Cole will hit “every corner of the country” for a 48-date tour, the second time he has taken a collection of handpicked dancers, band and stage crew with him.
Those opportunities were far more limited when, along with “every sport going”, Cole took dancing as a youngster. We’d imagine he was the subject of a few barbs about that as a kid.
“The response has been huge. The last one went down well, and it’s great getting round the country to people who are interested in what you do. It’s a lovely feeling, being on stage performing to people who have made the effort to come to see you.
“I did get lots of stick, but I am the sort of person that if you tell me not to do something, I am going to do it 10 times harder. It was a hard gig in many ways, but things that happen in your life, build your life… they make you the person you are. Perhaps that explains why I’ve been quite fiery in the past. But now I’m older and a bit wiser, and a bit mellower!”
“It’s a two-hour show, like an ‘evening with’, so you get an intimate experience. You get to see myself, other dancers and band live, with lots of chat and the audience involvement. There’s also a Q&A, where you might find out a bit of naughty gossip about Strictly! Alternatively, people come there to just have a laugh and join in with the dancing - we want to make it a big show. It’s a massive undertaking, but you need a big show. I want people to have the experience of the year, to walk out of the theatre blown away by the spectacle they’ve just seen - staging, lighting, band, a full experience.” The fact Cole can pack people into any theatre in the UK says everything about his ability to entertain - he is the one dancer who has transcended fans of the show, such is his notoriety. But his appeal is also indicative of a nation that has fallen in love with ballroom dancing.
Despite his usual presence in the latter stages of Strictly, Cole hasn’t always seen eye to eye with the judges. “It’s hard not to take things on board if you get negative criticism. For every 100 positive comments you get one negative, and that is what you focus on. But I am extremely proud of what Sophie Ellis-Bexter and I achieved – it was a fantastic ride and she did so well.”
“It’s becoming more acceptable, isn’t Visit brendancole. it? In all forms of dancing. And Strictly was com for tickets. definitely there at the front of it. As soon as it 13

Lifestyle RESTAURANT REVIEW Review by Amanda Moss
L
iterally a stone's throw from Liverpool one across the road by Duke Street and you'll find an oasis of calm in Campbell Square with Amalia Italian restaurant. In summer the whole front opens out to the courtyard where you can dine alfresco, but as it was a soggy February lunchtime we chose to stay in the warmth. When you walk through the doors it is like dipping your toes into the Mediterranean, with rustic tiled floors and maps of the region to make you feel like you're over there. Italian owner Antonio Lixi is the chef and together with Spanish business partner Miguel Queipo they have mastered the art of authentic Italian wholesome and tasty food. You can’t get more authentic than that. It was an opportunity for me to catch up with my friend, Pete Price over a spot of lunch. With so much to choose from (the menu is online) Miguel kindly offered to prepare a bespoke platter of dishes for us to sample. So we had calamari con verdure with delicate battered fried peppers, there was gnochetti aquello (lamb stew), bruschetta al pomodoro and bruschetta al funghi. The garlic mushrooms were by far my most favourite flavour of the lunch alongside the chicken and potato crochets. An absolutely splendid lunch, perfectly flawless with outstanding service to match. The phone was constantly ringing for bookings as we dined. It is a charming getaway from the bustle of the city centre and well worth a visit. As always,it gets extra gold points for being family and child friendly.

JEANCHRISTOPHE NOVELLI
Lifestyle FOOD
For a man regarded as one of the nation’s favourite French chefs, it’s perhaps rather apt to find the 52-year-old representing a cause close to British culinary hearts, because culinary genius JeanChristophe Novelli likes to champion good old British Fish and Chips!
W
ith a fish and seafood cookery course in his Hertfordshire Chef’s Academy, the creatures of the sea certainly have a champion in Jean-Christophe. This is a man who is passionate about sourcing local and organic ingredients. “Fish and chips is an industry where anybody who wants to can really make a go of it.” Novelli offers that he frequents his local Hertfordshire chippie - “there’s a good one on Uppingham High Street” - though when asked if he himself had a secret recipe to the perfect battered fish and chips, his answer is a tongue in cheek “quite honestly – no!” But for a man with multiple Michelin stars to his name, the acclaimed chef remains a fan of the simple. I narrowed the foodie down to the three most critical, can’t-live-without ingredients.
18
“Just three foods…only three ingredients? Well I would go for tomatoes, olive and mushrooms. And fresh produce is at the heart of that. My motto is ‘always introduce, always combine, and always use fresh’. No compromise!!”
Novelli himself is a man of little compromise. A hyperactive child, he was ever restless. Once actually tied down to a chair by a teacher, the impatient teen left school at 14 to work in a patisserie. After becoming a private head chef in Paris to the Rothschild family, he upped and moved to Britain in 1983, opening his first of what was to be many restaurants in 1996. Some may view this as a brave move, but Novelli doesn’t see it like that. “It was somewhere I wanted to be. People who want to go to Spain, to Portugal, they’re brave. I just had to cross the channel! At the time though, British cooking wasn’t as well represented as it is now. I guess I knew it could only go one way – up!”

Upon arrival we were greeted by the door team, who were very polite and made us feel really welcome. We were treated like VIP’s, being escorted downstairs by a very professional attentive host to our prebooked booth, the table was all set out complete with Farrio Roaches’ chocolates! Shortly after getting to our booth the hostess bought over our drinks, with sparklers hanging out of them, wow, we couldn’t have been made more special.
I would defiantly recommend anyone from Liverpool or visiting this amazing city to sample Liverpool’s biggest “Secret” as you will not be disappointed. I spoke to owner, she said that she has some new visions on how the club will move forward in the near future, including splitting the club into 2 separate venues, so on the ground floor things will stay the same playing popular chart, dance and house music, then the top floor will be dedicated to tec music on Friday and Saturday nights with new Djs Lauren Lo Sung, Kydus and Carlton Hudson.

How is the tour going? The touring has been amazing since the new album has been out. People really seem to get the new songs and they are really working at the gigs, and of course the oldies go down as well as always!
Writing is always good therapy. I recommend it! It’s not really a cure for sadness but it gives that negative energy somewhere to go that’s positive.
What made you title the album, The Boy Who Cried Wolf? Boy Cried Wolf is a lyric from a song on the album. The song is about telling tales. BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB:
So Long, See You Tomorrow Album Review Never a band to knowingly sit still, every new album is an offering to different styles of musical genre. We’ve had blues, folk and rock and the latest album, So Long, See You Tomorrow gives us a taste of the bands talents when they embrace psychedelia. Whilst not every track is an out and out winner, there are more than a few tunes to hold the album together. So long see you tomorrow, Carry Me and Feel are for me by far the best tunes. This album is a grower, don’t give up after your first listen. On the second listen, fire up the old lava lamp and light a few joss sticks while you lounge on your bean bag - then you will start to realise the musical genius and the crisp production of this album. My verdict 7/10

Lifestyle COMMUNITY THE CHOIR THATS ROCKING MERSEYSIDE
R
ock Choir is the UK's largest and most popular contemporary choir, with more than 17,000 members in over 300 local communities nationwide. It offers adults and teenagers the chance to sing and perform popular contemporary songs, with no auditions and no requirements to read music or have any previous singing experience. Rock Choir was started in Farnham, Surrey in 2005 by musician and singer, Caroline Redman Lusher, pioneering the contemporary choir movement in the UK. Rock Choir's uplifting ethos of fun, friendship and community spirit is a huge part of its attraction. At an individual level, it helps improve people's self-confidence, enables them to develop new singing skills, and enjoy a dynamic new social life. Singing together and achieving such a great sound gives members a huge sense of fulfilment. Added to this is the glamour and excitement of performing in public, which for many is a truly liberating experience. Rock Choir's popularity is phenomenal and its achievements are extraordinary. It's released two top twenty albums and performed enmasse at the 02 Arena, London and The Liverpool Echo Arena, Wembley Arena, Hammersmith Apollo and the Royal Albert Hall. In 2011 Rock Choir was the subject of popular 3-part ITV1 documentary 'The Choir That Rocks', and has made numerous other TV appearances, including BBC Breakfast, The One Show, The Paul O'Grady Show and The Alan Titchmarsh Show. Merseyside Rock Choir Fun, energetic and inspirational Rock Choir leader, Anthony Seaman joined the strong team of 55 Rock Choir leaders in September 2013. Anthony lives in Ainsdale with his 30
wife and son. A classicallytrained singer, he's no stranger to performing in public, and has sung with The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir. He's also been a hip-hop DJ and played bass with local Liverpool outfit Dan Elson & the Rhythm Pixies. Anthony trained as a music teacher at Liverpool Hope University and taught music at The North Liverpool Academy before joining Rock Choir. "Of course we're very proud of our achievements," says Anthony. "But what makes Rock Choir extra special is the way it enables people to experience the thrill of singing together, and the fun, friendship and community spirit it inspires. Time and time again I see how singing helps improve people's self-confidence and gives them wonderful sense of fulfilment and wellbeing. It's incredibly uplifting." Liverpool, Birkenhead, Maghull, Southport and West Kirby Rock Choir members attend fun, weekly rehearsals where they learn specially arranged and choreographed pop, rock and Motown songs, leading up to exciting performances at local and national events including recent performances at Metquarter Shopping Centre, Southport Market, Maghull Christmas lights, Pyramids Shopping Centre and Moreton Christmas Fair – many of which support charity.New members are always very welcome and anyone interested in joining can try a free 90-minute taster session. Lifestyle INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
I
2014 MARCH 8TH
nternational Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.
International Women’s Day is now an official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, with flowers and small gifts. In some countries International Women’ Day has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.
32
The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation feel that 'all the battles have been won for women' while many feminists from the 1970's know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women
have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men. However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives. Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more. So let’s work together to make a difference, think globally and act locally! Let’s make everyday International Women's Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.

Lifestyle INSPIRATION
MIGHTY GIRL
S
carlet Ablett is a mighty girl. What do I mean by that, you may ask? A mighty girl is smart, confident, courageous, successful in her chosen field and most of all, an inspiration for the empowerment of women. Scarlet comes from a footballing background, her late father Gary Ablett is the only player to have won the FA cup with both Liverpool FC and Everton FC an achievement of his she is incredibly proud of, but the one thing that will always make her proud was her seeing him be incredibly brave during his 16 month battle with blood cancer, sadly Gary passed away in January 2012 and it's because of him she is now the owner of her very busy online store SO46 Limited. When Scarlet lost her father she decided she needed to make his legacy live on and pour all her grieving into something positive. So a dress agency called SO46 was born. An idea which was inspired by her late father has now become her livelihood and her own way of making Gary's legacy live on. SO46 the shop officially launched on November 2012 and has continued to grow into the successful business it is today.
34
SO46 has gone from strength to strength in the past year and is favourite to a lot of celebrities and wives and girlfriends of the footballing world, something which she prides herself on for making them feel comfortable enough to shop with her. SO46 was a dream of hers whilst she was in school, but she thought it was something that would never happen, but now SO46 is her reality and she is loving every minute of it knowing it all came about with hardly any outside help. Most of all Scarlet Ablett wants to empower young girls and women. To tell them her story of success, to let other women know that you can transform something negative and life changing into something positive, and with hard work you can achieve your dreams and become a mighty girl yourself.

THE SHIRE LIBRARY RELAUNCHES WITH STUNNING NEW COVERS BY UNMITIGATED ENGLAND’S PETER ASHLEY
Lifestyle CULTURE
The wonderful Shire Library is relaunching this year, and the chances are that you already have some original much loved copies on your bookshelves.
S
hire will publish around 100 new-look titles in 2014, with new speciallycommissioned covers from author and illustrator Peter Ashley. Over four decades the Library has become a British heritage fixture: there have been more than 750 titles in the series, on topics ranging from British sheep breeds to TV toys. Spring 2014 will see new titles covering a typically eclectic range of subjects from 1950s childhood to medieval wall paintings and from witches and witchcraft to garden cities, alongside reissues of favourites on allotments and garden gnomes. Ever since John Rotheroe founded Shire in 1962 with Discovering East Suffolk, the publisher has specialised in unusual and specialised areas of heritage, collectibles, architecture, social history and design. Lovers of the quirky highways and byways of British history will always find something to pique their interest: whether your interest is in allotments, ice houses, early railways, classic MGs, thimbles, the slave trade, British film studios or the history of duelling, or in any one of hundreds of other subjects, Shire has a book for you. Many titles have become bestsellers, including Timber-framed Buildings and 44
Hallmarks on English Silver (both more than 200,000 copies); perhaps more surprisingly, even a volume such as Bottles and Bottle Collecting has sold in excess of 150,000 copies. And more recent titles such as The London Underground and Tea and Tea Drinking are well on their way to joining them! From Loyd Grossman to Brian Blessed, from Lucy Mangan to Joanna Lumley, Shire fans are as diverse as the Shire Library itself. Alan Titchmarsh says: ‘Shire books tackle subjects that others fail to notice. Whether they are on gipsy caravans, horse brasses or heraldry I simply love them! Small, neat, comprehensive yet reasonably priced. Who could ask for more?’ while Paul Heiney describes how Shire helped his own efforts as a farmer: ‘I once had a small farm run on traditional lines - cart horses, no tractors and Horse Drawn Farm Machinery was my bible.’

Lifestyle PROPERTY COMMUNITY HELPS SHAPE FUTURE OF ANFIELD ANFIELD RESIDENTS ARE HAVING THEIR SAY ON A NEW VISION TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF HOUSING AND CREATE NEW OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN THE COBRA NEIGHBOURHOOD.
The city council is undertaking an independent Neighbourhood Renewal Assessment for the areas of, Oakfield, Breck Road, Oakfield Road and Walton Breck Road in Anfield and contains around 570 properties. The NRA is gathering evidence about physical and social conditions within the neighbourhood - which is a gateway to Anfield from the south of the city - and arrive at options on how to build a stronger, more sustainable future for the area. The city council is keen that the community is fully involved, and local people were given the chance to share their ideas at a community planning event at the Anfield Breckside Community Corner l (ABCC), Richmond Park. The event was facilitated by the Council and its consultants Pennington Choices and Triangle Architects. Representatives from local social housing providers Riverside Housing and Your Housing Group were also in attendance. The council is now pulling together all comments received at the event – from quality of housing and shops to environmental and public realm improvements - to be fed into the draft NRA report. The report will be completed in March, before being shared will the local residents at the COBRA Stakeholders meeting in the Spring. HousingStrategy&.InvestmentService@liverpool.gov.uk 50
£1BN OF DEVELOPMENTS IN ONE YEAR FOR CITY A total of £1.06 billion worth of regeneration schemes got underway last year, across the city - and together, they will deliver more than 4,250 jobs. It is the highest level of investment in Liverpool since 2008, when the city reached its regeneration pinnacle as European Capital of Culture. Meanwhile, the city is making major progress in its housing delivery programme, with work getting underway in the past year on over 2,600 new homes. Key projects include in Anfield, where a £23m investment in new housing and the on-going refurbishment of 550 homes is supporting the wider, £260m regeneration plans for the area. As well as major investment in the city centre, Liverpool’s neighbourhoods are also benefiting. The new figures show that development outside the city centre is at its highest ever level, with £372 million of schemes projected for completion during 2014. These schemes are expected to create over 15,000 construction jobs and over 5,000 new jobs, indicating a continuing confidence in the regeneration of the city.

t this time of year, in the lull between "travelling seasons", I cast my mind back to memories of past journeys. The best of these involve events, incidents and encounters that could not possibly have been anticipated. Serendipities. This was certainly true in Dubrovnik, now in Croatia but, in 1964, part of Yugoslavia - a country held together by the force of Tito's personality. I arrived by bus from Sarayevo, via Mostar. Hot, dirty, hungry, thirsty and in a foul mood. It was my own fault for trying to cram too much into the time available, but I relished the prospect of a hot shower, a meal and a chance to recover before getting down to work the following morning. I did not know that my visit coincided with the city's arts festival. My friends in the tourist office decided that, after I had sorted myself out, a

spot of culture would definitely improve my mood. So, unexpectedly, I spent that evening watching "Hamlet", performed on the city ramparts by "The Young Vic Company from Bristol, England". And the following evening sat beside Margaret Truman, daughter of the former US President, at an orchestral concert. Very serendipitous. Then someone suggested an excursion to the island of Spinalonga. We clambered into a small boat, with a dozen others of various nationalities, and sped off, being treated to a commentary in doubtful English by our bearded skipper. When mentioned the island had been a leper colony, the adults looked grim. My three, and the other youngsters in the group, were delighted. To them, the site of a leper colony was not macabre, but adventurous and even "cool" (if that's the word they used in those days). So we walked around the island, peering into ruined buildings and stepping over broken tombstones. There were even skulls and bones, bleached by the sun. The adults weren't happy. The kids had the time of their lives. They sang songs on the way back. They also

christened our bearded skipper "Spinalonga Max", but that was a joke only the English understood. Though travelling solo, I never lacked for pleasurable company which, especially at the end of an energetic day, is one of the treasures of travel. If you are yet to travel to Croatia - I really do recommend it. Dubrovnik in particular is a stunning port, with a French Riviera feel to it – at a tiny fraction of the cost. The beaches are white, clean and very inviting. These tiny islands have a steep history that stretches from pre Roman times - the ruins of which have been recently expertly excavated and can be reached within a two minute walk along the port. Guided walking specialist operator, Ramblers Worldwide Holidays offer inclusive holidays to Dubrovnik. "A Week Around Dubrovnik" costs from £715, depending when you travel between early April and late October. The price includes return flights between Gatwick and Dubrovnik and seven nights half-board accommodation in the Grand Hotel Park.

PHILLIP’S
DIY... Hello Lifestyle Readers! I hope you’re all well – it’s been another busy and varied month for me which is exactly the way I like it! As always, I have another one of my top tips especially for you to do that much needed job around the home. I attended the annual charity ball organised by Champions (UK) plc which this year was a Masquerade Ball. It was a fantastic evening with plenty of celebs in attendance including goalkeeping legend Peter Shilton OBE, Asheswinning cricketer Matthew Hoggard MBE and snooker great Willie Thorne. The evening was organised to raise money for Rainbows, a dedicated children’s hospice in Loughborough. As I mentioned last month, I have now finished my filming with Silverline Tools to help showcase some of their products. The size of their range as

well as the quality is what helps Silverline stand apart from the crowd. To view the full range visit http://www.silverlinetools.com A TV channel that I like to get involved with is Ideal World, as it showcases the very best products for all your needs around the house. I have been helping to present Wagner Spraytech’s range of paint-spraying products which make painting the house much simpler. Their products are designed to suit all skill levels from novices to professionals and guarantee a great finish. Finally, one of the other brands I’m involved with, leading workwear producers Blaklader, sponsored the Men’s EHF European Handball Championship which was won by France. Blaklader really is a growing presence in the marketplace and favourite of hard-working people around the world. Well my friends, that’s about it for me this month. I will continue to keep you updated with all my latest news right here.. Until next time… All the best,
Craig Phillips
Cover the floor with underlay taping all joints, starting from left to right with a full panel floor, before clicking joints together, when you get to the right hand side you will have to do your first cut. Still without clicking the panels together place the cut on the floor, you can also use your off cut for the first piece on your second course, this will avoid any waste. Now you’re happy with the layout and you have staggered all the tongue and groove joints you can start clipping them together like a large jigsaw using a pulling bar to clip in the cut end panel you must always leave a 10mm to 20mm expansion gap around all 4 edges of room. Once the first 2 courses of floor are clicked in place, repeat throughout. When you have finished your full room you will need to cover your expansion gap with ether skirting boards or a quad bead.

Lifestyle SPORT EVERTON IN THE COMMUNITY END SILVER JUBILEE YEAR WITH 1M BIRTHDAY PRESENT
Everton in the Community has seen out its silver jubilee year in style by revealing they have reached their £1million fundraising target to help improve the lives of more people across Merseyside and the North West.
T
To reach the £1million total, the charity undertook a high-profile fundraising campaign working with Everton Football Club, its partners and, of course, its fans.
Chief Executive Denise Barrett Baxendale was joined by cruiserweight boxer and lifelong Everton fan Tony Bellew on the pitch to reveal the fundraising total of £1,013,128 to the Goodison faithful, who have loyally supported the charity’s jubilee campaign over the past 12 months.
Highlights of the year-long campaign include the incredibly popular ’12 Shades’ of Blue’ calendar, which gave fans a glimpse of the players as they’ve never seen them before – and raised over £32,000, last season’s dedicated birthday fixture to mark 25 years of Everton in the Community, and Marouane Fellaini turning his famous afro silver to raise £25,000.
he Club’s official charity revealed its ambitious target – set almost one year ago to the day – had been achieved during a half-time celebration at the Blues’ 2-1 home win against Aston Villa, which was dedicated to Everton in the Community.

Speaking after announcing the £1million fundraising target had been achieved, Denise Barrett-Baxendale said: “Our silver jubilee campaign has been a roaring success. The support from fans, grant funders, organisations and individuals from across the region has been phenomenal and I would like to thank every supporter who has contributed to the success of the campaign along with all the staff, participants and volunteers who helped make this possible. “Whilst there is a lot to be very proud of, the charity’s trustees and I have a continual desire to push the boundaries and seek to improve every aspect of what we do. If you are of a certain age you will remember the “pa pa” original Clio advert – it launched a new concept of car – small, sporty, for 62
and A6 model lines will be launching this year. A new and powerful two-liter TDI will provide the drive at 100 kW (136 hp), 120 kW (163 hp) or 140 kW (190 hp); the engine emits just 104 to 119 grams of CO2 per kilometer (167.37 to 191.51 g/mile) depending on the model. The “ultra” designation stands for sustainable mobility that is fully available for everyday use. city driving and most of all it was cool. Fast forward a few years to 2014 and there are lots of trendy city cars on the market. So what do Renault do? They brought in a new designer, Laurens van den Acker to overhaul its styling department – the Clio 4 is the first car he’s designed from scratch. The Clio is now curvier, sexier must have small car that packs plenty of va va voom. They have very cleverly hidden that rear doors – so much so that Renault so far are planning on selling only the 5 door version. Designed for economy, forced induction means it’s still nippy enough in town and sounds sweet when worked hard in the country. Just don’t expect big car performance on the open road. For that, you’ll need the forthcoming 120bhp 1.2-litre turbo.

The New BMW X3 Before you ask, yes it’s way better than the last unpopular clunky version. Inside and out the new BMW X3 cuts a visually more powerful figure with its new, modified twin circular headlights (LED headlights are optional), a more eye-catching kidney grille, new front and rear bumpers, and exterior mirrors with
integrated turn signal indicators – shining an even brighter spotlight on signature BMW X model design features. A high level of perceived quality and exclusivity also defines the interior of the new BMW X3. Chrome applications, a centre console with optional automatic climate control system in highgloss black-panel look, and new cupholders with a sliding cover for the centre console underline the car’s premium appearance. New exterior colours, upholstery designs, interior trim strips and light-alloy wheels enable even more refined individualisation. You might think that the X3’s second-generation enlargement has made it more of a guzzler. It weighs around 1,800kg, after all. But BMW’s efficiency wizards have been busy with their spells, making this one of the most efficient cars in this class.
TOYOTA launches the new RAV4 It’s 20 years since Toyota RAV4 created a whole new motoring market with the launch of RAV4, the original compact recreational SUV. While other manufacturers have been keen to follow Toyota’s lead, RAV4 continues to develop and deliver performance, specification and choice that keep pace with changing customer demand.
New 2.0 D-4D with all-wheel drive. Customers choosing Toyota’s efficient 2.0-litre D-4D diesel engine for their RAV4 have, until now, only had the option of two-wheel drive. For 2014 this popular unit has been made available with all-wheel drive, increasing access to 4×4 motoring with the kind of low emissions and strong fuel economy that help keep running costs down. The new RAV4 2.0 D-4D AWD is available in Icon and
Invincible grades. The 122bhp (91kW) engine generates 310Nm for the kind of flexible driving performance that makes the car as easy to manage around town or out on the open road. Coupled to a six-speed manual transmission it returns official combined cycle figures of 137g/km (Band E for Vehicle Excise Duty) and 53.3mpg. 63

Lifestyle THE LAST WORD WITH AMANDA MOSS
Hello March!
in Model101 in the cavern quarter. So far I have hosted two this year and they have proven to be really popular. Which goes to show that people do business with people behind the business. (Keep your eye on my Facebook postings for updates).
G
oodness time seems to be flying by. Spring already. Woo hoo! The days are noticeably lighter which can only mean one thing - extra shopping hours in daylight! I have only just started venturing back into the shops and updating my post pregnancy wardrobe and I am loving all the season’s colours. Of course I am keeping a close eye on the high street as we are launching Liverpool Fashion Week 2014 very soon. I want to say a huge congratulations to everyone who was either nominated or won an award at the recent Bierkeller Liverpool Lifestyle Awards. It is one of my favourite events to organise, I love everyone’s genuine excitement, I am proud to be able to showcase businesses that may not normally get a platform and above all, it’s a glamorous night out, an opportunity to get dressed up and have fun with the people we do business with. Sometimes we can get all to consumed with work matters and it is nice to take a step back and actually socialise with the people we work with. That is why I have launched the Lifestyle networking events. They take place once a month at our office HQ
Talking of socialising, it has been a wonderful special month for me when one of my very old school friends visited Liverpool for a city break. We got the opportunity to catch up, she came to ours for dinner and we didn’t stop nattering from the moment she stepped over the threshold until she reluctantly left. True friendships last decades without the needs to check in every hour or every day. We were comfortable in each other’s company from the moment we hugged each other tightly. It was a lovely feeling, a sense of belonging and acceptance no matter who we have turned out to be. Material and social status counted for nothing as we shared the Prosecco and talked for hours. It was like being back in year seven, sharing the same memories. What a wonderful evening and I am so privileged to be in touch with so many special friends. I look at my daughter busy texting every night and wonder how many of her friends she will be in contact in years to come? With social media helping us reach out to our friends from afar there really is no excuse to lose touch, even if it a random message once a year, it is bound to make you feel great. Have a fantastic month and as always, stay stylish,
