FOOT-STOMPING NEW MUSICAL NO MIRACLES HERE GETS READY FOR UK TOUR THE FOUR WEEK COUNTDOWN FOR ACCLAIMED SHOW WHICH STOPS OFF AT ORMSKIRK NEXT MONTH is an uplifting and joyful look at how you can overcome depression through dancing. Packed with live music and dance, No Miracles Here is an anthem to feeling alive and keeping the faith.

A dance marathon in a northern town forms the backdrop for a foot-stomping and thought-provoking new musical that promises to have audiences on their feet across the UK. No Miracles Here is set to embark on a 15-date national tour in spring 2019, opening at Northern Stage in Newcastle on February 15. The show stops off at The Arts Centre in Ormskirk on 25-26 February.

The raw and vibrant musical production was made in association with the charity Mind, and developed through support from the RSC, Northern Stage, Shoreditch Town Hall and The New Wolsey Theatre. It is brought to the stage on this new tour by producer Max Emmerson. Stan Hodgson, co-artistic director of The Letter Room, said: “We’re delighted to be performing No Miracles Here, our music-filled story of resilience and hope set in a dance marathon.

Ray is young man with a big night ahead of him. The music has started, and he can’t leave the floor. He just has to keep going.

“The show had a wonderful reception when it was initially staged in Edinburgh, Salford and London. We tried to tell a personal story of human struggle, but fill it with music, movement and humour.  And we can't wait to pick up our instruments, get our sweatbands on and bring it to new audiences across the country in 2019!"

JACK BARRY

Jack Barry performs Tango at Liverpool’s Hot Water Comedy Club on Wednesday 27th February. He chats exclusively with Lifestyle….Tickets can be found at jackbarry.co.uk How does it feel to be on your debut tour? It’s great! I’ve been gigging around the country for years, but I’ve only ever done short sets, now I get to bother people for over an hour! I’ve been wanting to do it for a while now. Last year my show was all about drugs, which went down very well in Edinburgh, but I’m not sure the rest of the country were ready for me to talk about drugs for an hour. So this year I thought, “what’s something that EVERYONE enjoys?” So this year my show is all about sex. If you’ve ever had sex or are thinking about having sex in the future, there should be something in there you’ll enjoy. How did you get into stand up? I started doing comedy at university. I thought if you wanted to be a comedian you had to go to Cambridge and be in the Footlights, like Stephen Fry or David Mitchell. But I was too stupid to go to Cambridge, so I went to Leeds and started doing  12

how to time it so it doesn’t ruin the show. So, bring it on!

comedy there instead. At first I did sketches with a big group, but when you leave university you lose all your friends, so I started doing stand-up on my own. Is it difficult to crack? I’ll let you know when I figure it out! I’ve spoken to people who’ve been doing it for 20 years and still don’t think they’ve completely cracked it.  We’ve been told by other comedians that our scousers think they’re funnier than the people on stage, how do you react to that? I’m sure that’s probably true. Most comedians are boring bastards in conversation, as this interview will probably prove. It’s definitely different being funny in the pub with your mates to being on stage trying to make a room full of strangers laugh. All I know is scousers’ sense of humour makes them great audience members, Liverpool’s one of my favourite places to perform. Scousers give great input, but they always know

Mock the Week is one of my favourite shows, how difficult is it to write comedy for other people? It’s easy. The hardest thing about writing jokes usually is worrying that, if no one laughs at them, you’ll look like an idiot. If someone else is saying the jokes you’ve written then they’re the one that will look like an idiot, the suckers! What was it like touring with Russell Howard? I’ve supported Russell for a couple of dates here and there and it’s a lot of fun. He’s a great guy who’s incredibly supportive of new talent. Speaking of which, why are you asking about him? I’m the cool new guy you should be worried about! Come see my show!  What’s your dream gig? Hot Water Comedy Club on the 27th of February. I’ve been dreaming of this gig my entire life and it’s finally happening.

THIS IS THE GREATEST SHOW! gandeys Circus is coming to Aintree Racecourse, from 15 February to 3 March, for the first leg of its 2019 tour

The world-renowned gandeys Circus is set to make audiences Come Alive with its latest production – The greatest Show Tour. Direct from its appearance on Hong Kong’s waterfront, gandeys’ theatre of A Million Dreams will be pitched up for the first time in the UK this year at Aintree Racecourse, from Friday 15 February to Sunday 3 March. This action-packed, star-studded performance – featuring over 30 international circus artistes from Cuba, Kenya, Colombia, Mexico, ghana and the UK – has been put together by Hayley and Mariska, the fourth generation of the famous gandey family dynasty.   The gandeys and their team relentlessly scour the globe for the very best acts, and most recently discovered real-life ‘rubber man’ Amiri Kisingagi Mvamba.

Former ringmaster and gandeys spokesman Binky Beaumont said: “We were sent a YouTube video of this talented contortionist from Tanzania and instantly we knew he would be an exciting and novel addition to our latest production. “We gave him his first contract in Hong Kong for our great Circus of Europe, where he is currently working for us, and he’ll be coming to the UK for the first time in 2019.” Another of the team’s favourite acts this year is the award-winning Duo garcia. The pair circle around the roof of the big top on a rocket at up to 30 miles-an-hour while performing incredible acrobatics on the vessel. Binky said: “We are thrilled to welcome the daring duo back to gandeys with this very unique act. “We also have the return of Europe’s favourite clown Chico Rico this season, by popular demand. He’s a firm favourite with our audiences and is guaranteed to add mayhem and mirth to the proceedings!” Also featured will be The gerlings, riding motorbikes inside a ‘globe of death’ as well as leaping on the ‘space wheel’ and dancing and riding a bike on the high wire. Meanwhile there will be rhythmical excitement from the tumbling African Warriors, springboard acrobatics from the Havana Troupe, and a romantic aerial ballet from real life couple Jacqueline Morales and Brandon Nava. Last year gandeys Circus raised over £15,000 for different charities through its spring and autumn tour and during its visit to Aintree Racecourse it will be pairing up with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Charity once again. “We’re delighted to continue our ongoing friendship with everyone at Aintree Racecourse and Alder Hey,” Binky said. “gandeys has been touring for over 100 years and this new production will be one of the largest touring shows in Europe – with costumes, lighting and sound equipment worthy of any West End theatre production.

“Last year we celebrated 250 years of the circus as well as one of the biggest films of the year, The greatest Showman. “Circus has leapt into the 21st century and left behind the old images of sawdust and draughty tents, and transformed into a real theatrical experience. We want to bring children away from their computer games and television screens and make them excited about watching something spectacular right in front of their eyes. It’s true escapism for all the family.” gandeys Circus is at Aintree Racecourse from Friday 15 February to Sunday 3 March. The Box Office will be open daily from Monday 11th February, 9.30am to 8pm. To celebrate this new production arriving at its first venue, gandeys Circus is giving readers the opportunity to win a family ticket to the show at Aintree Racecourse.

GIANTS GENIUS RECEIVES TOP CITY HONOUR Jean Luc Courcoult, the man behind the three unforgettable giant Spectaculars, has received the highest accolade Liverpool can bestow. The creative director who wowed more than three million people with Sea Odyssey, Memories of August 1914 and, the final act of the trilogy, Liverpool’s Dream, has received Freedom of the City at St george’s Hall for his outstanding contribution to the city. At the same time, the Nantes-based company he founded, Royal de Luxe, will be admitted to the Freedom Roll of Associations and Institutions. The honour comes following last October’s Liverpool’s Dream event which has been hailed as the region’s biggest, and most successful-ever free event, attracting 1.3million people and generating £60.6m for the local economies. Jean Luc said: “I am touched and overwhelmed by this recognition. Liverpool holds a very special place in my heart. Audiences embraced our giant family, and there was no other city where we wanted to do the final-ever show.

20

“I would like to thank the Mayor and the council for giving myself and Royal de

Luxe this accolade – it is a career highlight and a memory I will treasure for years to come.” Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “Seeing first-hand the impact of a major cultural event on people who live, work and visit this great city is always truly humbling. On three occasions, Royal de Luxe and the creative genius that is Jean Luc brought our city to an awe-struck standstill. The giant family became part of our family - we welcomed them into our communities, explored city streets alongside them, cried with them and laughed with them. “This city shone under the international spotlight and the Freedom accolade is a chance for us to say thank you for transforming our streets and transporting an audience of millions to a magical world with this world-class art.”   Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Christine Banks, said: “As First Citizen, I am massively proud to award the Freedom to both Jean Luc and Royal de Luxe. The creativity they have brought to our streets since 2012 is unforgettable – they have touched the lives of millions of people and been responsible for images of our city being beamed around the

world.” Royal de Luxe is considered the world’s leading street theatre company. Founded in 1979 by Jean-Luc Courcoult and based in Nantes, the company is seen as a pioneer creating original theatrical forms. His ethos was that theatre should be accessible to all ages and should be free. Royal de Luxe is now acknowledged “National Company” by the French Ministry of Culture. The company has played in front of more than 24 million spectators with around 1,500 shows in more than 172 cities, in 40 countries on 5 continents. For a full history of the company please view the Royal de Luxe website: https://www.royal-de-luxe.com/fr/ The giants were created in 1993 and have travelled all over the world taking over cities including Berlin, Barcelona, Santiago, Antwerp, guadalajara, Perth and Montreal.  The giants are manipulated by dozens of Lilliputians, bringing them to life and telling tales using a universal language. The giants are now officially retired, although Royal de Luxe are looking to work on new and different projects in the future.

KING OF SWING

ASA MURPHY

How did you get into singing? I have been singing since I was in my early 20s but I didn’t start professional until I got married, when I was 28. I was a caseworker an used to go to shows and watch other people sing and thought I could have a go myself and do that, so it was a natural next step. I did a demo tape and sent it in to Billy Butler at BBC Merseyside. He played it to the people and that was it. You’re famously associated with Buddy Holly, why does he appeal to you? Probably because I  have been sining twin all my life and he’s definitely my role models.I have written a music about him, currently touring. What is so special about him is that he was 22 when he died and had only been singing for 16 months prior to that. But  he had such an amazing talent for such a young people with all that 22

music he produced in that short time. Tell us more about the musical I thought about the whole construction of it and how it was going top layout and then it probably took me around six months to write. I am very proud of it I hope people enjoy it. How is your BBC Merseyside show going? (Sundays 5-7pm) It’s great thank you, I have been doing it for 2 years and they’ve just renewed my contract. I get a lot of emails and messages on facebook from fans which is very nice. I don’t take it for granted and I appreciate all the support. How do you juggle everything? It’s like anyone being self employed, you just get on with it. I have family and responsibilities like everyone else.  Being self employed I am constantly looking for the the next project, I can’t step

off the gas because you know what it’s like you have to keep the ball rolling. What’s next after Buddy Holly Lives - The Music Never Dies? I am named after Al Jolson, the World’s greatest Entertainer so it’s only fitting that I write a musical about him. He’s very inspirational

HOW TO NOT LET ANXIETY GET THE BEST OF YOU Is anxiety affecting you? Most people experience some level of anxiety from time to time. In many situations, feeling anxious is perfectly normal – if you’re taking your driving test, for instance, or going for a job interview. But once the situation has passed, your anxiety should disappear too. It becomes more of an issue when you feel overwhelmed by anxiety on a more frequent basis – or even all of the time. According to Anxiety UK, almost 1 in 5 people in the UK, aged 16 and older, showed symptoms of anxiety or depression. Anybody can be affected by anxiety, in fact, Hugh grant, Ariana grande, Ryan Reynolds and most recently former TOWIE star and fiancé of Rio Ferdinand, Kate Wright have all revealed their struggles with the disorder. Feeling anxious more often than not can affect your dayto-day life in a negative way. The experts at the wellbeing charity CABA, believe the first step is to understand how anxiety can affect you. When is anxiety a problem? If you experience 1 or more of the following on a regular basis, you may have higherthan-normal levels of anxiety: 34

• You constantly worry that something bad will happen • You always fear the worst • Everything feels as if it’s going too fast or too slow • ou’re obsessed with negative experiences • You look out for things that could go wrong all the time • You’re irritable and find it impossible to relax • You get flustered easily Other signs that you may be experiencing long-term anxiety include smoking, drinking and using drugs to help you cope with the way you’re feeling – all of which may stop you enjoying life to the full. Anxiety can also cause a range of physical symptoms, such as: • Faster breathing or shortness of breath • Increased or irregular heart rate • Tiredness or insomnia • Headaches, lightheadedness or dizziness • Sweating or having hot flushes How can you help yourself? If you suffer from long-term anxiety, and struggle to feel relaxed then it’s best to visit your gP, as you may be diagnosed withgeneralised Anxiety Disorder (gAD). Suffers of gAD can get treatments on the NHS such

as talking therapies and anxiety medication to help manage their symptoms. But there are also several things you can do: Eat a balanced diet Try to eat as healthily as possible, including at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Consider avoiding foods such as sugar and caffeine, as they may make feelings of anxiety worse. Cut back on alcohol if necessary, and give up cigarettes if you’re a smoker as this may help you to feel calmer. Get physical Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week, as physical activity helps to increase our production of ‘feel-good’ hormones that can help with stress and tension. Relax more Finding time for things that help you unwind can help relieve feelings of anxiety. Try some deep breathing exercises whenever you feel anxious. Talk about it Try not to bottle up any feelings of anxiety you may be having, as talking about it could help you manage whatever’s causing those feelings. This is especially important at work, as workplace stress can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing, from causing insomnia to straining relationships.

DARREN VISION The Happiness of Pursuit

II know what you’re thinking ... hasn’t he got this the wrong way round? Surely he means the Pursuit of Happiness.  Well, I sort of do mean that.  But at the same time I actually mean the Happiness of Pursuit.  I believe that we under estimate the importance of the chase, the journey ... so if we get more happiness from the pursuit then maybe we get an extra helping of happiness generally. Sometimes we just need a little bit of luck to help us on our way. Yes that’s what I said... a bit of luck.  I don’t mean the winning the lottery kind of luck, I mean the luck you earn. Winning the lottery is the lightning strike kind of luck ... an isolated,

dramatic incident. The luck you earn comes from saying yes, from volunteering your services.  The luck you make for yourself tends to be a wind that has been blowing for some time ... it is a constant, often repetitive, thing that you do well that tends to make you luckier. The more you volunteer for things the more you learn ... the more you say yes the more experience you get. As the old saying goes ‘the more I practice the luckier I get’. So when you are volunteering for stuff, when you are saying yes more often you tend to be improving the perception others have of you.  When you are getting better at what you do and when others think well

of you it naturally follows that your chances of recognition, promotion and success will be increasing too.  And as your confidence grows so does your sense of self belief ... you start to be happy in the pursuit of your goals. So whilst everyone is offering complex solutions to life’s problems I’m offering a simple one.  Enjoy what you do and say yes more often, it will make you happier.  And it may just make you luckier too.

This global friendship was built on historic trade links, and today we maintain a partnership with China which furthers investment and development for both parties. “The projections will, literally, shine a light on the arch - a symbol of our friendship. We have seen in previous years how popular the lumiere is – and this year’s beautiful work will be no exception.  “It will undoubtedly be a wonderful few days and an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate our muchloved Chinese community.” The event is organised by Liverpool City Council and is supported by Liverpool Chinese Business Association, the

BLOGGER AND MEDIA PERSONALITY STEPH BANNISTER, AKA SCOUSE BIRD PROBLEMS, HAS TAKEN RETAIL SPACE IN CROSBY VILLAGE.

4A Camegie Avenue, Cosby, Liverpool L23 3BR Tel: 0151 538 4343 www.thisislivincrosby.com Opening Times: Mon-Sat 10am-12pm Sun 10am-11pm After returning from a successful restaurant in London, the Restauranteur and former Head Chef opened This is Livin in 2015 followed by Livin Kitchen on College 42

The Scouse Bird Shop is located in Telegraph House and will stock the full range of Scouse Bird merchandise, including her famous diaries, Scouse mugs and loads of quirky, innovative gifts from other local entrepreneurs.  The Crosby shop is Steph’s second premises in Merseyside and follows on from the popularity of her Aintree store. She also opened a hair and beauty salon last year, which will be moving to Crosby in the near future and will be located next door but one to the shop. The letting of the space follows St. Modwen’s investment in the village, which commenced with the redevelopment of the glenn Buildings and construction of 10 Moor Lane. The company acquired the site and secured planning approval from Sefton Council in June 2017 to create 24,775 sq ft of retail, leisure and office space in the area.

Steph said: “I’m so excited to be moving to Crosby. I’ve been running this business for nearly seven years now but only opened up a physical location about 18 months ago.

Road in 2017 with a vision to create a relaxed, local dining experience.

including Valentines or check us out on facebook for our amazing reviews.

Locally sourced produce creates expertly cooked dishes influenced by family favourites.

Function room also available to hire.

The owners Mum (Flo) appeared on the great British Bake Off, and people have travelled far and wide to have a slice of her delicious cakes, cheesecakes and other treats all homemade by Flo.  Our bar offers fabulous cocktails, specially crafted wines and independent craft beers. Please visit the website to book for that special occasion,

“It’s been like starting all over again to be honest, there’s so much I’ve had to learn but now I can take what I know and make this shop even better. It’s the same with the salon, I had no experience in that field, just an idea that I had to run with and learn from. “It’s one of my new year’s goals to throw myself into the local community and make it better. I hope this will be the first step. There’s a totally different vibe here in Crosby than in some other parts of Liverpool, it’s really friendly, welcoming and supportive and I want to inject my own brand of fun and energy here.

HEN PARTY DESTINATION Liverpool has been revealed as the

It's also the third most popular hen destination in Europe and has even beaten party hubs such as Ibiza and Benidorm. This is according to analysis of recent sales data from hen and stag experts Red7.  The data gives football fans something to cheer about – Liverpool is twice as popular with hens than its rival Manchester, five times as popular as Leeds and nearly seven times as popular as Newcastle.  The city made famous by the swinging sixties has even been declared the third most popular hen destination in Europe after beating

Sarah Chapman, Head of Hen, Stag and Sten at Red7, explained: “Liverpool is a fashionable destination with great shopping as well as trendy bars and restaurants.

PEOPLE URGED TO GET THEMSELVES TESTED FOR HIV

It is recommended that you test at least once a year, but more often if you have sex without a condom, or sex with more than one partner. HIV is a virus most commonly caught by having sex without a condom. Currently there are 650 people in the city living with HIV infection. Approximately 50 Liverpool residents are newly diagnosed each year. It is estimated that up to 115 people living locally have the virus, but aren’t aware.  If left untreated, HIV attacks the immune system and affects the body’s ability to fight infection which becomes weakened and vulnerable to serious illness. This stage of infection is known as AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), and at this point, there is an increased risk of life-threatening illnesses such as tuberculosis, pneumonia and some cancers. Councillor Paul Brant, Cabinet member for adult health, said: “Testing and early diagnosis is extremely important. There are very effective drug treatments available which means if someone with HIV tests early and starts treatment, they can expect to live a full and healthy life. This also reduces the risk of passing on the virus to others. We’d advise anyone who doesn’t

EDI TOR’S LAST WORD Hello February dear readers! Love is in the air and I am loving this issue!

Lifestyle www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk @amandalifestyle

We’re honoured to have an exclusive interview with Rosa Salazar, star of this month’s blockbuster Alita;Battel Angel, directed by James Cameron. And while we’re talking about Hollywood I am backing Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga to sweep the oscars with A Star is Born. Talking of awards, we have the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards on 2 Mach. Thanks to The New Birkdale Clinic for sponsoring and of course Liverpool Gin for providing the drinks for the guests. our tenth anniversary celebration promises to be more than amazing. I love seeing the surprise on people’s faces when they win awards and the happiness and pride it brings to people. Congratulations to all finalists, you’re all winners in my eyes, Has anyone been doing the ten year challenge? Back then I was an emotional train wreck. I had 5 children under 9 and blamed everyone for my problems, mostly brought on my lack of sleep. Ten years and another child along the way and the chaos has evaporated into calmness and joy. It has taken a spiritual awakening and a lot of gratitude for my blessings together me to the place I am, but I can show you to how you how to find peace and contentment in your life. Join me on my Mindfulness, Meditation and Positive Healing retreat with fellow columnist Darren Lawrenson. Together we will show you how to be morecownfient in your life, your business and your approach to yourself. Back to Valentine’s day - you don’t need cards and flowers and chocolates to know what you already know - you are loved and you are fabulous. As the great playwright oscar Wilde said, "Loving yourself is the most important romance you will ever have" Sending the brightest blessings to you
