FRANK BRUNO INTERVIEW Former world champion
professional boxer and mental health champion Frank Bruno will be conducting a talk on his Let Me Be Frank at Liverpool’s St Georges Hall next month. Bruno was one of the most well-loved and recognisable boxers in British history, and faced multiple top-rated heavyweights during his career including two bouts with Mike Tyson and a domestic clash against Lennox Lewis. The British sporting icon has packed a lot into his 56 years and will be revealing the highs and lows of his career, life outside of the ring, details on public battle with depression and snippets of memorable showdowns includes the likes of Oliver McCall and Iron Mike Tyson. In the run up to his visit to our city he chats to Lifestyle Your book has been out for a couple of months now, how is it being received? Not bad at all. It’s different now, you have to work hard to push it. It took about a year to write with a writer from the Daily Mirror. He came round to my

Was it cathartic as you have been through so much? In some ways it was therapeutic but in others I found it very difficult answering questions. But it tells you all about the ups and downs of my life. And that’s what everyone goes through, don’t they? Life isn’t a straight road and you have to take the good with the bad. You have been very vocal about your mental health issues, is this something you are proud of? Yes the subject has touched a lot of people, many of whom would have been very shy to talk about the issue of mental health. A lot of people still don’t know enough about it and it is very stressful, especially for men who don’t like to talk and open up about their feelings. So if I can hep then I will. Your sporting career has been immense, have there been any particular highlights? Everyday of it was a highlight. I had 45 fights and only lost five. What does it feel like when you are in that ring? It’s an incredible feeling. you don’t feel pain as the adrenaline keeps your going. you are so focused and so driven. It is all about the attitude to get into the correct mindset and stay driven and focus on winning. There are still people who think boxing as a sport should be banned, what do you say to them? Boxing is one of the best sports to get into for all round fitness. It is no more dangerous than
football, in fact there are far more sports indues with football than boxing, Any sport should be encouraged as it is important to get physical and look after yourself so find a sport that you enjoy and train hard. But you can trip on the pavement and fall over and hurt yourself in the street everyday, it doesn’t stop you going out does it? What are your plans for 2018? Well I have my tour which is something to look forward. It;s nice for people to ask me questions and we have a nice chat, and I am off to Thailand and I am also launching a foundation charity as well so I am rather busy! Do are told you are inspirational all the time, does that make you proud? I am just an ordinary man. I am blessed with a beautiful family and I am no different to anyone else. WE are all just human beings but if I can lift someone’s spirits and give them advice then that is great.

Liam Moore, 49, has worked with the homeless for 20 years. After appearing on Stars in Their Eyes in 1996 as Phil Collins, singing Another Day in Paradise which homeless charity Shelter used to raise £millions. Since then Liam has always worked with homeless charities both in the US and UK and even put himself homeless for 36 hours last year and sold the Big Issue. He said, “It was very tough, I felt disenfranchised, I sold 3 copies in five hours. It was a very lonely time, it was demoralising being homeless being on the same level as the street pigeons, smelling urine on the pavements and it changed my life. Every homeless person has a story. He has raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years. You’re the Voice was released in 2009 after the death of Rhys Jones, he gathered the two communities together and formed a choir with local school children, as a stand up to gun and gang crime. In 2017 he has raised just on 10k for local charities combatting homelessness and child poverty, by hosting Stars in ya Eyes nights at the Devonshire House hotel. Next year Liam plans to release his single Where’s the Love, a penned song by Liam where proceeds will go to homeless charities. A flashmob is planned in the city centre to raise more awareness and hopefully much needed funds. Liam also works with children and young people using music and drama to address social justice and helping vulnerable families out of poverty, loneliness and "Giving them hope and purpose is very much my top priority.” he said.
accepting my condition, physically I have had to recover from many surgeries by teaching myself to walk and adapt to my new physical limitations but I always come back fighting with a positive and mental attitude.
D A VI D O U L TO N When were you diagnosed? I was diagnosed at 18 month old with a rare genetic metabolic disorder called mucopolysaccharidoses, MPS for short and I have type two of the strain which is Hunters Syndrome. I have endured 20 operations to better my physical health and wellbeing, at present and for the last 15 years I have been receiving a weekly intravenous infusion of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) which gives me the enzyme (eleprase) I am unable to produce. What is the hardest thing you have had to endure? The hardest thing I have had to endure is mentally and emotionally
Why did you choose this career for you? During my life my family have supported me through school, health and life in general and we have always raised awareness and fundraised in relation to my condition. I left school and went to college to pursue a business, admin and computer courses to gain knowledge but unfortunately when I have tried to seek employment I was unsuccessful due to my health issues and needing one day a week off for my ongoing treatment. Approximately 4 years ago as a family we decided to do some market research in event management, during our research period people were asking us to be a part of their events and celebrations and GoEvents was born. What is your proudest achievement to date? Most proudest achievement was passing my driving test 4 days after my 17th birthday because I was inspired by a close friend who had my condition and now I inspire the
victims of domestic violence. Katie Walker said: "I was particularly touched by Sir Rod's kind donation. I aim to grow my salon so as to create an area where victims of domestic abuse can not only get hair and beauty treatment but can also talk to a counsellor and be referred to specialised agencies and charities. I am not myself a professional counsellor, but I understand, I listen and I point these women in the right direction."
younger boys to do the same. Driving has given me my independents and enabled me to pursue the life I have today. How do you hope to help others? By sharing my knowledge and understanding of life and business through my achievement in becoming a master coach in accelerated learning. What is the best piece of advice you have every been given? Live each day as it’s your last and live life to the fullest. What would you tell someone who was in the situation you were in? There is always someone worse off than you, you’re not different your just unique. What are your hopes for 2018? Keep steadily growing GoEvents to make our clients dreams into a reality, on a personal level. Keep learning, sharing and inspiring people to be a better them.

Katie herself was a victim of domestic abuse. Disaster struck when the violent relationship she was in came to a head.
Katie said: “I never felt so low, looking in the mirror and not recognising myself was so difficult to deal with.” After receiving counselling, Katie began to revisit her dream of opening a salon. She met the man who was to become her husband and he encouraged her to go to The Prince’s Trust for support. She joined the Enterprise programme in 2013 and successfully opened her hair and beauty salon, Bella Mode.

KIERON BIMPSON The principal objectives of the Charitable Company are: * To promote good citizenship in Merseyside by raising the awareness of the public of serious crime and effects caused to the victims, their families and friends (and to the criminals themselves) * To relieve the mental and physical sickness of persons resident in Merseyside (who are victims of serious crime, their families and friends) suffering from bereavement or loss by the provision of counselling and support. * The relief of financial hardship, either generally or individually, of people(who are victims of serious crime and their families) living in Merseyside by making grants of money for providing or paying for items services or facilities.
Our charity supports recovery and rehabilitation of all victims of serious crimes. These serious criminal acts result in many consequences and issues affecting not only the individual or families affected, but the extended families and friends surrounding those affected. We provide four core strands of Support and Rehabilitation. Mental Health Rehabilitation Support Our staff are trained in the initial assessment and trauma awareness process and are trained practitioners of Mental Health First Aid programme via our Charity "supercentre" facilities .We have created relaxing bespoke Counselling and therapy 14
Rooms throughout our extensive building in Huyton Village Knowsley. Our support programmes integrating regular progress review updates to evaluate the effective service user support strategies and facilities .These updates are to monitor individual support requirements, following our initial assessment process and referral programme. Crisis and bereavement management support. We provide one to one or group support sessions via our on site facilities, Emotional Victim Support and Rehabilitation sessions, with staffs that are fully qualified and experienced tutors registered with the Institute for Learning, we use our own personal traumatic life experiences, to discuss real case studies via our unique bespoke counselling Suites. We have held various FBF Charity Community launch parties including our annual Christmas Grotto to raise awareness of our services. We have supplied a newly fitted Kitchen and onsite Cafe offering free refreshments to our service users. This relocation is in a much better location with more public footfall to raise awareness through our newly designed signage. We have continued to establish centre accreditation through the awarding ASDAN, offering recognition and qualifications for our community and service users for our education programmes delivered by our highly qualified and trained staff and volunteers. One of the results of the programme of services and activities is to enable the children, young people and families to return to a more stable way of life and to cope with their loss,
trauma and associated problems as a result of being directly affected by serious crimes . We are very keen for children and young people to volunteer at the centre as we follow a peer to peer help ethos. It is difficult to predict how many will take up such opportunities as some may react by wanting to help in the place where they were helped whilst others may wish to provide volunteering time for other charities. We can provide opportunities for volunteers to help with the general running of the centre and ensure it is clean, welcoming and a place new beneficiaries will want to come for help. If however they wanted to become a longer term and more specialists volunteer we will arrange appropriate training for them. How do you cope everyday? I dedicate my life to Francesca Legacy so I surround myself with her charity it's a comfort blanket to know she lives on in a different way through this. In three short years she changed my life forever "That's true immortality.... What are your hopes for 2018? I hope to expand on our services and facilities we have been established as a charitable company and charity since 2010 and Have the largest support and resource centre in the region for Victim support .We want to help more and more people and have a bigger impact preventing Serious Crimes by offering support to all affected right across the region and beyond What is your message for others suffering trauma ? .. I
love the concept of Viva Brazil. For a set price you can help yourself to the buffet as many times as you can manages as well as enjoying an unlimited supply of 16 authentic brazilian charcoal bbq meats. In anticipation of my meal I skipped lunch but I still couldn’t manage to wade through all 16 meats, despite their tempting aroma and juices. My favourites were the garlic cap of rump, sirloin steak, sausages and chicken and bacon. The favourite for my teenagers was the cinnamon pineapple, something I have tried to replicate at home but failed. It’s reasonably priced, considering you would spend around £25 per head on just one steak in a restaurant on average. Here you can fill your boots for around the same price (evening prices) and children under 10 eat free. The salad bar was well stocked with traditional hot dishes which also happen to be gluten free as well. For example you can tuck into Feijoda, a smoked pork and black bean stew or Vaca Atolada- beef stew made with cassava root, tomatoes, onion, garlic and fresh parsley. My favourite was the Stroganoffe de carne and the Galinhada de franco (chicken risotto made with long grain rice, orange 16
juice, onions garlic, fresh herbs and tomato. The vegetable selection was also huge: sautéed spring cabbage, deep fried cassava and basmati rice. There was also a selection of cold meats, fresh crusty bread and cheeses. Viva Brazil offers the full package for an enjoyable dining experience: tasteful decor and I challenge anyone to find something they can’t eat. I like my meats well done and they come round served as medium but our server was happy to ensure they got an extra blast on the charcoal for me. And may I add that I have never met a more friendly team of waiters and waitresses who genuinely seemed to enjoy their roles. As we enjoyed our dinner early evening we noticed some of the kitchen staff came out to eat as well which was a really nice touch and shows that the people behind the scenes are happy to eat the food they prepared, something you dont’ always find in the catering industry. I left fully satisfied, with a heavy belly and a he smile on my face having nada wonderful evening at Viva Brazil. I thoroughly recommend it. if the publisher hadn’t set a deadline I’d probably still be writing now - it’s one of those subjects I could never get bored of!
Liverpool journalist Jade Wright left a comfortable job to enter the scary world of self employment and within her first year has published a book celebrating the world of clubs and bars across Merseyside the 1970s and launched a food magazine. She is also a member of the Guild of Food Writers and chats to us about her new role. How long did it take you to write and what inspired you to write it? The publisher approached me in the spring and I started work as soon as I left the Echo In April. I was lucky enough to write about Liverpool’s amazing nightlife for 11 years, and during that time people told me about the gigs, venues, clubs and pubs they’d loved from years gone by. Places like Liverpool Stadium, Eric’s, the original cavern, the Coconut Grove, Allinson’s, The She Club… It was something I’d always been interested in, so the book was a brilliant opportunity to interview the people who made those scenes in the 70s and see their amazing pictures. It took me until September to finish. But 18
You are known as a food writer, what do you love about your job? The bar and restaurant scene in Merseyside has changed so much since I started writing about food and drink for the Echo in 2006. In 2008 The Harden’s Guide described the restaurant scene as lacklustre and overly-complacent - now 10 years on there’s no way they could say the same now. In fact they’ve just released a new guide with dozens of Merseyside restaurants all singled out for praise. I’ve been massively lucky to have been writing about the scene during that time, and to see some amazing independent operators launch their restaurants and do so well. I now genuinely believe it’s the most exciting food and drink scene in the UK. London may have more choice, but independents can’t afford the rents to open there, so they come to Liverpool because they know there is a great community of people here who love to eat and drink. Do you cook and would you go on Bake Off? I’m an enthusiastic home cook but nowhere near good enough to do it in public, let alone on Bake Off! I take my hat off to anyone who does, and to the chefs and bakers who cook professionally. It’s easy to sit in my seat eating and making judgements, but much harder to do the work in the first place. I worked in bars and restaurants for years while I was studying and doing work experience to get journalism jobs. I’d work for free in newsrooms during the day and spend my evenings waitressing and pulling pints so I could pay my rent. It gave me a huge respect for anyone who works in the hospitality industry. It also helps to review a meal if you know what’s going on behind the scenes. And the saying is very true - ‘if someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person’. What is the best thing you have discovered about running your own business? Having my little girl, Bea, changed everything for me. I’d always loved
my job and intended to go back to work after a few months, with her in nursery. The minute I met her I knew I wanted to spend as much time with her as possible, so I set about changing my life around to make that happen. Thankfully my husband felt the same. Now I am able to fit my business around her, writing books, editing Good Taste and writing freelance for other magazines and newspapers. This year I’ve trained in food photography too. I either work from home or from an office in the Baltic Triangle if I have meetings that day. Sometimes Bea comes to meetings or out to do a review with me, if it’s suitable. When I left the Echo I wondered if the phone would stop ringing - until you take the leap you never know - but so far so good. I’m busier than I’ve ever been. What are you plans for 2018? I’m looking forward to writing The Dirty Stop Outs’ Guide to 1980’s Liverpool - people are already telling me some brilliant anecdotes for that and building up Good Taste and the freelance side of things, both writing and photography. And to watching Bea get bigger and more independent. It’s a real privilege to spend my days with such a funny little girl and I treasure every day.
The Dirty stop Outs Guide to 1970s Liverpool is available now priced £13.95 from Waterstones Liverpool, HMV and online at www.jadewright.co.uk and www.acmretro.com/dirty-stopouts-guide-to-1970s-liverpool/.

NEW EATERY 109 ALLERTON LAUNCHES ON BUSTLING ALLERTON ROAD 109 Allerton Road, L18 2DD REVIEW BY Amanda Moss
Looking for the new restaurant on the trendy south Liverpool high street, you can’t fail to find 109 Allerton Road. It is a refreshingly healthy restaurant with a menu to suit absolutely everyone, gluten intolerant, vegans and those with allergies need not panic about eating out anymore! It is owned by Charlotte, 25 and her business partner Nicola who were frustrated with the lack of healthy option and stodgy dishes on offer to people on the go. Inspired by their travels and their own healthy lifestyles they developed the concept of the restaurant serving healthy snacks, dishes and smoothies to eat in or take away. This month sees the launch of their home delivery baskets to you can create the menu with their ingredients delivered fresh to your door. Already open just a few weeks and the lunchtime service is full with people queuing up for a table. It is easy to see why after our lunch there. The menu is small, simple but 20
with oodles of choice. What stood out immediately is the superfood bowls which was a no brainer to pick for me. You choose two greens (I selected kale and stem broccoli) and the two colours, for me it was red onion and celery. Then a choice of two seeds(pumpkin and sesame for me). My carb choice was brown rice and my protein choice was grilled chicken, but I could have selected crispy chicken, salmon, tuna, turkey or soy bean curd or egg. My cheese choice was parmesan and the dressing was sesame and soy. Absolutely delicious, nutty, tasty and surprisingly filling that I did’t really want a dessert. However it would be cheating the restaurant if I didn’t. as I
was there to do a review. So I selected a vegan raspberry and blackberry cake. The sponge was light and unsweet, i discover that it was actually made from coconut. The meal was washed down with a latte. Herb infused fresh water is available on tap from the bar. In such a small space they have created a wonderful ambience, a fantastic business which I am certain will thrive run by two very clever and very friendly business women.

Love Aesthetics' ethos has always been about providing the highest quality clinical, evidence based procedures at a reasonable price. After dedicating the last five years working fully in aesthetics I have found the best way to do this is by having a purpose built clinic at my home to reduce overheads. Due to the ever growing clientele we have now located to a larger home based premises to accommodate our growing needs. The Best Education for Life
TWO NEW HEADS TO LEAD THE BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ SENIOR SCHOOLS OF MERCHANT TAYLORS IN 2018. Mrs Claire Tao, who is currently Deputy Head at the City of London school for Girls (CLsG), will take over as Headmistress from Mrs Louise Robinson when she leaves at Easter 2018. Mr David Wickes will join Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ school as Headmaster in september 2018. David is currently the Deputy Headmaster at Warwick school. Claire started her career in industry and following the completion of an MSc in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations at the London School of Economics in 1993 and a PGCE at Roehampton University in 2004 moved into education working for the Old Palace School of John Whitgift as a Biology Teacher & Head of House. She then went to Dulwich College Preparatory School as a Chemistry Teacher and Housemistress before moving to CSLG where she has been for 10 years. Claire’s interests include the theatre and hosting social events and she is also looking forward to continuing her love of cycling in the Northern hills. Upon the appointment Claire commented, “I am delighted to be joining Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School at this exciting time in their development. I have been hugely impressed by members of the School community who I have encountered on my visits to the School. I am looking forward to joining you after Easter and the prospect of working collaboratively with the staff and the other Heads to ensure the girls’ learning experience is
positive, fun and rewarding for them.” After achieving a Master of Arts degree at Oxford in History and a further Master of Arts from King’s College, London David pursued a teaching career at Dulwich College
WICKES M R D AV I D
and then Abingdon School. He enjoys travelling in Europe, visiting the theatre and watching most sports including following the ups and downs of Southampton FC. David said, “I am honoured to have been appointed Head of Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School, one of the most prestigious schools in the north of England. It has a strong tradition and wonderful values and I am thrilled to be taking over at such an exciting time in its history. From the moment I visited the school, I was struck by the warmth of the welcome and the tremendous community spirit. Over the coming months I am greatly looking forward to getting to know the schools’ staff, parents, alumni and, most especially, the boys. I am also looking forward to working alongside Mrs Thomas, Miss Yardley and, of course, Mrs Tao to ensure that our family of schools continues to offer the best education in the area.”
These key appointments will lead the Schools into the next important stage of their development as top North West independent day schools. Working closely together the new Heads will guide these historic establishments through an exciting period of celebration and change as they move toward the 400th anniversary of its foundation in 2020. The Chair of Governors, Mrs Beverley Bell, CBE, who worked with a number of her colleagues, assisted by Saxton Bampfylde, to recruit Claire and David said, “We were impressed by the calibre and number of applicants the posts attracted. Both are highly qualified for the roles and are experts in male and female pedagogy which is crucial for the Schools’ single sex education focus. In addition, they will work closely together, along with the Heads of the Primary and Junior Schools, Janet Thomas and Julie Yardley, to maximise the opportunities for all our pupils to mix together outside the classroom – one of the key unique benefits of our 4-18 family of schools set up. In the meantime, the Board of Governors would like to express its sincere gratitude to Louise Robinson for her dedication and commitment to her role as Headmistress at the Senior Girls’ School and the Primary School for so many years and to Deiniol Williams for taking up the post of Acting Head at the Boys’ School following David Cook’s move to a new Headship. In ensuring the smooth running of the school Deiniol has shown the highest levels of professionalism and commitment. We are all extremely grateful to him.” 29

BIRKENHEAD PARK IN TOP 100 HISTORIC SITES IN ENGLAND Birkenhead Park in Merseyside was created in 1847 and is thought to be the first publicly funded civic park in the world, marking a change in our attitude to public health. It is also known to be the inspiration of perhaps the world’s most famous park: Central Park in New York City. The park has been chosen by George Clarke as one of his top 10 places in the Homes & Gardens category of Historic England's campaign A History of England in 100 Places. © Birkenhead Park
Birkenhead Park has been chosen as one of the Top 100 historically significant places in England by Historic England. The ‘A History of England in 100 places’ project has been searching the length and breadth of England to find the country’s most significant sites which have helped shape both this country and countries internationally. The Grade I listed landscape and conservation area was one of ten historical sites chosen in the ‘Homes and Gardens’ category alongside Windsor castle, Blenheim Palace and Wirral’s own Port Sunlight village. TV presenter George Clarke, who has judged the Homes & Gardens category, is one of a panel of expert judges, including Mary Beard, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Tristram Hunt and David Olusoga, who have chosen 10 places in 10 different categories from a long list of public nominations. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton and opened in 1847, Birkenhead Park was the world’s first publicly funded park in the world and was also the first park to be created through an Act of Parliament.

Cllr Phillip Brightmore, Wirral’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: ‘I am incredibly proud that Birkenhead Park has been recognised by Historic England and the Top 100 places project. To be chosen alongside places such as Windsor Castle is a real honour and shows just how influential Birkenhead Park has been in the history of not only Wirral and England, but internationally as well.’ ‘I would also like to thank the hard working, dedicated staff and volunteers that care for Birkenhead Park and maintain it to its historically excellent standard.’ Listen to the podcast series here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast /irreplaceable-a-history-ofengland-in-100places/id1286786238

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE RAF! On a cold and wet morning on Tuesday 12th December 2017, Santa and his Elves from the Royal Air Force, fought through the bad weather in order to deliver presents to the sick children at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Now in its Thirteenth year, the RAF Charity Santa Present Drop aims to help raise the spirits of the children residing in hospital over the Christmas period by delivering presents. Tokio Myers isn't a person who is terribly bothered by convention. The multi-talented pianist, composer and producer, who stormed to victory on Britain's Got Talent earlier this year, is a man on a mission. Fusing the classical music he fell in love with as a young child with the beats and textures of the dance music he immersed himself in in his teens, Tokio is a compellling example of what can happen when you throw away the rulebook. An hour in his company is an inspiring and revitalising experience. Tokio talks about his upbringing, his musical journey and core beliefs, with infectious zeal and unapologetic passion. The days when you needed to seek permission to go against the grain as an artist are gone, he argues. "I really do feel that the structural rigidity we grew up with is slowly melting away. Young people today are much more open-minded about music, and its infinite possibilities. People my age, we've had to un-condition ourselves, if you like. Kids now, though, they're approaching life, everything, in a completely different way."
TOKIO MYERS INTERVIEW
42
Growing up in a household full of warmth and nurture, Tokio absorbed his parents' Jamaican heritage through his dad's extensive record collection, and the importance placed on perserverance, tolerance and looking out for others. Yet his childhood was also marked by the gang violence that dogged the north London streets he grew up among, and which at times threatened to lure him down the wrong path. He witnessed the fatal stabbing of Philip Lawrence, headteacher of the secondary school he attended, and was rushed to safety by his music teacher, who Tokio credits, alongside his parents (he cites his dad buying him a second-hand keyboard when he was nine as another crucial moment), with keeping him on the straight and narrow, and leading him away from temptation. "Mr Morgan was more than a teacher; he was a man who went the extra mile to get to know the parents, get to know the families. Looking back on it, I can see the magic. I got such a vibe from him, as someone who looked out for everyone, and that had such a strong effect on the school.
Everybody knew he was a gem. He played such a huge part in keeping me on the right track, and making sure I had all the time I needed to use the music facilities, whenever I wanted to. He steered me in the right direction, when I could so easily have gone in the wrong one." The sense of community, of responsibility towards others, inculcated in Tokio by his parents and Mr Morgan found expression this summer when Tokio co-produced and performed on Bridge Over Troubled Water, the single recorded by a host of stars in aid of the survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire. "It's not a question of being a do-gooder," Tokio says. "It's doing the right thing. Simple as that. Why would you turn away?" This clarity of thought, this ability to see beyond imaginary or self-imposed barriers, has characterised Tokio's whole ethos ever since he first encountered the music that would transform his life. "I had piano lessons at school, and that system tends to naturally set you up to go towards classical music. So I went through all the books, for years, and then you get to this stage where you go: 'Oh my God, I can play classical music!' There's no easy answer as to why I went in that direction, no one said: 'This is what you're going to do.' It was never my goal. It was an accident – it ambushed me, I guess. The best accident of my life.
the show have strengthened his determination to give something back. "Music kept me out of a lot of trouble when I was growing up. I didn't know it at the time, but doing my own thing, practising the piano, with all this other stuff going on around me – looking back at it now, something was definitely protecting me. Now, I can go to the piano when other things are happening in my life and it's a release. But when I was a kid, I wasn't aware of that; I just did it. I didn't intuitively understand what was happening, but there was this sense, all the time, that something was guiding me: to use music to free my mind, to free my soul.” "Music can change lives; there has to be more of it in schools than there is, because it releases people's emotions, it breaks down inhibitions. Lose that and you're only increasing the chances of mental ill-health, of people sinking into drugs or drink or crime. The current set-up is geared to creating these miniature workers in their little blazers, preparing for a life of 9-5. Well, what if that's not for you? What about creativity, spontaneity, opportunity? Music is slowly being taken out of schools, and I think that's partly out of fear: they know that creativity is a powerful tool. My mission is to turn those lights back on, one by one. You can't stifle people's creativity. You can try, but you won't succeed. I'm willing to fight to the end on this one."
"I was fascinated by it. At each point, you're tackling a new level of skill, and you realise: 'I can do this.' And that kept happening. I guess it helped that I'm quite focused as a person. I'm an only child, and that means you can just be you, with all the time in the world. There is something endless fascinating about classical music, from the skill point, to the harmonics, the dynamic range. It was like no other music I'd encountered. I kept thinking: 'This is so magical.' And to be able to experience that magic, over and over, seemed amazing."
Watching, studying, learning, Tokio took in the genius and artistry of the musicians he suddenly found himself working with, and resolved to emulate their example. "Amy and Kanye, in particular, inspired me hugely; there's that sense of 'If you're going to do this, you've got to surrender to it completely.' You've got to learn from their mistakes, too, but in terms of the artistry, the commitment, it's so inspiring. They've taught me that you have to be open, be free, be true, to get the best out of it."
A huge part of Tokio's mission since winning BGT is to turn others on to that magic. He has plans to found a music school for children from troubled and deprived backgrounds, an ambition inspired by his own experiences as a child. The responses he has received since appearing on
Tokio is now bringing these core principles to his own album. It is already sounding like a game-changer. Tracks such as Angel, Blood Stream, Mercy and To Be Loved swoop and soar with breathtaking dynamic power and range. It is as if everything Tokio has absorbed in his life to date has
been poured into the music. Thus you get moments of pure euphoria, which give way without warning to sociopolitical polemic, to massed vocals hurtling a song forwards, to giant orchestral swells underpinned by furious, skittering beats. Just like the classical music that cast such an unbreakable spell on him as a child, Tokio's songs communicate both joy and pain, light and darkness, hope and despair. They break down barriers, and in doing so, find a new, and higher, ground. "With the album, I've really tried to knock down those walls," says Tokio, "and bring classical and contemporary elements together. I've been hugely influenced by the 90s dance scene, by bands such as Faithless and Massive Attack. There was a magic to that era, and I wanted to capture that and bring it up to date for our times. You don't need permission – in music, but in life, too. In that respect, I do think it's an incredible time to be alive. We are all responsible for making changes. I feel that something huge is coming. So the album is also very much inspired by the younger generation, the kids coming up now; they've been a huge part of my figuring out what I'm doing and how to do it. This is so much more than me just making an album. I want to make music where you're taken on a journey, on this incredible experience – in other words, life!"
His debut album, Top Generation, is out now.

ALAN STRANGE
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A GRAPHIC DEsIGNER
Tell us about your job role Where do I start as I wear so many different hats these days. I suppose as well as being responsible for all new business that comes in I'm also the person who decides the creative for the client. I will then sometimes meet the client to present the work and complete the project. After that is all approved I will get involved in print or whatever media solution the client requires. Lastly the dreaded chasing of outstanding Invoices, so I'm kept quite busy these days. What makes a successful graphic designer? Firstly and most importantly you need to listen to the client, I've seen so much time wasted when a so called designer has gone off on one and although it may look pleasing it does not answer the brief at all. Also you need to think differently and give options otherwise anybody will have a go, and they usually do with some horrendous results.
Graphic design has evolved with so many businesses being online, how have you had to adapt? Media solutions are changing all the time and are quite specialised at times. I am basically from a design and print background and have experts around me that advise on websites etc. Tell us about a typical day A typical day is different every single day I'm glad to say so I never get bored. The first thing I try to do is go through and answer as many emails as possible before the phone starts. I then decide what is the most urgent project to sort out (Which client frightens me most haha). Usually while I'm doing this other projects are coming in and I'm starting to think about them as well. I might have to get some print quotes along the way and then place the completed job with the printer. I've downed about three cups of tea by now and I might need to go and see a client, which gives me a backlog when I get back and another late night. There's always more emails to answer and maybe amendments to something that was done earlier. Hopefully the day has had no major panics and I can look forward to tomorrow. What is your proudest achievement? Without a doubt, outside of work, is having two wonderful children, one of each, who are an absolute credit. They are like chalk and cheese but are the most caring individuals you could wish to meet. In my career I'm very proud to boast that from nothing I've created quite a few jobs for people and a fair number of them have gone on to start their own successful companies, I get a buzz from that.
What advice would you give your younger self? Haha, is that before 'Wine, women and fast cars'. No joking apart, I think I would tell myself to carefully look at all the opportunities that are offered to you before making a hasty decision. I've taken the wrong road a couple of times when all seemed wonderful on the table. I would certainly look hard into going into a partnership again. I would rather succeed or fail by my own merits now. How do you deal with difficult clients? Selected hearing! Only joking all my clients are perfect. What is your best design work to date? I'd like to think it was my last project as I'm always trying to improve and produce something better. It's very hard to pick anything as design work is very subjective and I think everything I do is wonderful haha. What makes you happy? Seeing other people around me happy especially family and friends. How do you switch off? I find this aspect of life very difficult as I've been known to wake up at night and scribble down an idea, much to my wifes amusement. Besides that I think the best way I switch off is going to the Snowdon area and scrambling up a mountain or two, the views are to die for.

CHRIS BRAGAN PEAKY BLINDERS
As we are in the grip of the fourth series of BBC 2 drama Peaky Blinders, we chat exclusively to rising star Chris Bragain, originally from the Wirral who is set for an even bigger role in the fifth series.
Ooh tell me more about it? It’s called CG Men and I thought that there was a gap in the market for good quality fashionable mens underwear. I have done a lot of research into this with my business partner and the initial collection is getting a good response. It’s going to be great.
Chris met up with Amanda Moss and talked about his journey into acting.
Why fashion? It is something I am interested in, it works well with acting and acting is not a reliable job. I need to have something to fall back on.
Congratulations on your role, is acting something you always wanted to do? Thank you, yes it was, I did acting in school but then I went and got a proper job, if you can call it, I went to work in a bank for ten years. I absolutely loved it, I was earning great money but then I hit my mid 30s and thought to myself, what am I doing Is this really what I wanted? So I quit my job and got myself an acting agent and took it from there. Wow, that’s brave, so what happened? I seem to be quite lucky and find myself falling into roles. I enrolled on an acting course and I got a job on Emmerdale and did some bits on Hollyoaks. I made a few friends along the way and then got offered this role on Peaky. With my looks I tend to get type cast as the baddy which I don’t mind as they’re all the fun roles. It is important to go after your dreams so I am glad I made the decision. What plans have you got for 2018? More of the same, just acting and I also am launching a men’s lingerie brand. I have swapped agents a few times as well, it has been important for me to find a good one who is working in my interests and I look forward to more projects this year

What advice do you have for people wanting to get into acting? It’s hard, be prepared to start at the bottom. Spend time on set and know what everyone’s role is, from the director to producer to first assistant director to boom op. You don’t want to look an idiot on set and will get more respect by understanding everyone’s role. Also be prepared for a lot of hanging around and a lot of chasing. Television drama is all about the eyes and telling a story through the eyes. Be confident and don’t give up if it is something that you really want.

RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SASSY MUM & SOCIALITE
CLAIRE SIMMO Well another whirlwind year is over and I have just completed 53 shows of panto at the Epstein Theatre for LHK Productions Peter Pan where I was appearing as Tinkerbell. Time flies when you are having fun (pardon the pun) Having had fabulous reviews and sold out performances and receiving 5 stars from The Stage Newspaper … I still managed to squeeze in some fun and festive cheer right into the new year. Had to make sure I visited the Christmas markets at St Georges Hall with Melodie & brother Peter … and quadruple my sugar intake with an after eight hot chocolate – wow !!!!! It was a chilly night and being wrapped up and all the lights twinkling made me feel like I was in a Christmas film! Normally have a busy schedule – but this month has even made my Duracell bunny batteries have to be recharged!!!! With the Christmas light switch on in Waterloo with the panto cast after a day of rehearsals … then dashing to change in the toilets at Radio City 2 (classy) to then go and host
the Diamond Ball for The Princes Trust – again at St Georges Hall was an absolute honour with Willy Miller .. and we raised over £100,000 thanks to everyone’s generosity on the evening and the guests partied into the night with the lovely Sophie Ellis Bextor performing. I have worked a lot with The Princes Trust this year and the way they have changed young people’s lives is just tremendous… and that will continue for many years to come. I should have really got a sleeping bag and camped out at St Georges Hall – as I also hosted the annual Celebrate a Life service for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation where relatives can have a light on a tree for a loved one … this is a very emotional time for my family and I as my amazing dad Mike Flynn sadly lost his life to this dreadful disease 11 years ago … and the charity have shown so much support to us all and they strive to find an early detection for lung cancer to help prevent other families having to lost someone so loved and adored. I also managed to squeeze in my residency at Champs in Ainsdale for a special Christmas party night … where the regulars seemed to enjoy my crooning of Christmas songs – and even dragged out my Stars in their Eyes Madonna impression … with my lovely brother Pete controlling the backing tracks – I never know what’ s coming next – like playing Name that Tune with my own voice ha ha !!! Also loved guest DJ spot and singing at The Ramada Hotel in Southport at one of their party nights – in fact wanted to be on my own Christmas
night out there it was so much fun! It was also the month that the Radio City 2 105.9FM breakfast show celebrated its 2nd birthday ….so to be honest, Rossie, producer Mike and I have really been on festive countdown since then and all the rule books have gone out the window and we have been rather giddy! I was delighted that the Lewis’ grotto returned to St Johns Market thus year and I took my daughter Melodie – brought back so many memories of my Nan taking me on the train to the grotto like a tradition and it really is still that magical (can even spot the Radio City Tower). I had a day off panto so had the opportunity to host the new look Fanzone at Goodison at the Swansea game – which looks fabulous – and thankfully another 3 points so things hopefully turned around with the new gaffer!!!! Anyway – all that’s left for me to say – is have a very Happy New Year and hoping 2018 is a wonderful one for you all !!!!!

Lifestyle
Happy new year and welcome to 2018! I don’t make resolutions because I am thankful everyday for what I have in life and every day I strive to better myself. Did you know that a university study shows that less than 10% of resolutions are actually successfully accomplished. The top resolutions are losing weight, exercise, stopping smoking/drinking and debt management. So why don’t they work? In order to change you have to change the way you think. Talking about something won’t change anything, but changing the way you feel and taking small positive steps will help you accomplish what you want. Lifestyle magazine has lots of events this year to help you create the lifestyle you deserve:
