FOOD, DRINK & MUSIC –THE PERFECT BLEND

T

his year at Stanley Park the North West Food Lovers Festival promises to be an even bigger hit with festival goers than it was in its first year. With almost 10,000 people attending the event in 2014 organisers were delighted with the turn out and have committed to an even bigger event in 2015. Festival Organiser Stephen Wundke was looking forward to 2015 as he explained “The reception from visitors last year was just fabulous and with the help of Gemma McGowan and her team from the Isla Gladstone Conservatory we have put together an even bigger programme in 2015, something of which we are very proud and we know families will love.” Simon Rimmer from Sunday Brunch and Jean Christophe Novelli, voted world sexiest chef in a recent Sky poll, headline the host of local and regional chefs who will be on the stage providing their great cooking demonstrations but this year there will be two stages with the other featuring artists from the Liverpool International Music Festival in a Radio City inspired “unplugged” series of sessions over the 3 days. It’s an exciting new addition to the programme and gives festival goers even more to do with the family. In addition to the Cooking demonstrations and the Radio City Music stage, festival visitors can try taste and buy from over 100 exhibitors who are all passionate about food and drink, many of whom put on their own shows featuring their products on their stands. There is also free kids cooking classes put on by the Academy of Culinary Arts where children get to make dishes under supervision, that they can then take home with them. This fabulous activity and a series of high quality children’s fairground rides make the Festival a must visit family attraction this July. Tickets are just £5 when bought on line for adults and children under 12 are free. The event opens on Friday the 3rd of July at midday and then at 11.00am on both Saturday and Sunday with closing time 6.00pm on each day. july ISSUE 87 A note from our editor...

Hello lovely Lifestyle readers! I feel quite energised this month. After Meat Free May, and a general healthier June with plenty of tough exercise, I feel fantastic. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve not taken the pledge. I still enjoy a drink or two, lovely meals out in Liverpool, and I’m still part of a very important club – Cake Club. But when I’m not doing the indulgent things, I am so much more careful with what I eat and drink. The result? No, I’m not a size 10, but I am feeling better about myself. So much so, I actually donned a wetsuit recently and had a go at Wake Boarding at the Liverpool Marina. If you’ve not heard of this bonkers sport, basically you are pulled at high speed on a zip line across the water while attempting to remain upright on your board – which resembles a snowboard. I wasn’t very good, I hit the water too many times to count. But for those few precious seconds that I did get up, the feeling was amazing, like flying. I’m now looking into what I can try next. I’ve always wanted a diving licence, and it appears that I can get one of those in the Liverpool Marina too. A few small changes in my life and I feel on top of the world, actually seeking out physical challenges and looking slightly better in a pair of jeans while I’m at it. It turns out that you can have your Cake Club and eat it. We have an amazing competition this month to win 5 pairs of tickets for the Reading Leeds Festival in August. This is one of the best festivals in the U.K with music to appeal to every taste – 18 for details. Good Luck. see p16 Lots of love,

Joy x

radio city summer live! Radio City are coming back this July 18, with the Radio City Summer Live at the Echo area. Britain's Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon is one of the concert’s headline acts. We chatted to Alesha about her new single, Britain’s Got Talent, Simon Cowell not being that scary and why she’s now the mean judge. Can you tell me about your new single? The song is called, “The Way We Are” I wrote it with Alex James a British writer. We wrote it in Sweden with a Swedish producer Harry Sommerdahl. I really like Harry, because his beats are very old school but they are still sound very modern and fresh so I love him. I feel like the track has a little bit of a flavour of what I did back in the day, but it still feels current for now. I wanted it to be an anthem for everyone, I wanted a really positive message. I feel like people should really celebrate who they are and not try and be something that they’re not. We’re all individuals and all different and I think that’s what makes us special and that’s really what the song is doing, it’s celebrating individuality. It’s an anthem for everyone to stand up and say this is who I am and I’m not changing for anyone. Is there a new album on the way too? Yes, the album’s called Do It For Love and I’ve been working on it since last August. I’m really pleased actually, it’s quite autobiographical and feel-good.

10

11

You first performed the single on Britain’s Got Talent, weren’t you nervous, especially with Simon Cowell there? No not at all. It takes a lot to scare me. They are my fam, my family, it was like performing at home for me. But Simon was there? So? No really, to me Simon is very sweet and supportive. I knew he would be rooting for me, he wants people to succeed, so I knew I would be alright there. What about the other judge David? He’s not so sweet. No, only joking, he’s lovely. David after all is the nation’s favourite judge. Is his politeness a front? No it really isn’t, he is very lovely. He is the most polite of all four of us I think, he’s a real gentlemen. And you are getting little nastier, which is better. I’m always the tough judge to be honest, it’s just the way they edit the show. But I am usually the one that presses the buzzer first. Generally I think I am quite tough, I think I am the least patient out of all four of us. Which is risky business, because you get some people who are like, “Yes Alesha, he was rubbish, you go girl” but you get others who say, “What’s the matter with you? You’re grumpy, how could you say no to that person” Like the little kid with red hair, who sang to his girlfriend? Oh Henry yes, ohh that was quite a controversial buzz. That made me feel bad. Some people were quite upset with me over that. I did feel a little guilty, I’m not going to lie. I felt awful about that because in the end he turned around and said that he was trying to impress me. Yep I felt bad about that, but on the night I just got caught up in the show and buzzed him. But there are other acts that are different like DJ John. Ah yes DJ John. You see the deal with people like DJ John, he’s a really great example of a really bad good bad act. Where you know they are not talented, but they still make you laugh. They still entertain you, and get the audience up on their feet cheering and dancing along. On the day that type of reaction from the audience will sometimes that will earn you a pass. Sometimes. 12

Drink Me ho said we have to drink wine out of stem glasses? And who said those stem glasses have to be made out of glass? And further more, who said the glass has to be transparent? Do we need to see through the glass clearly do discern if it’s red or white, can’t we just look over the top to see what we are drinking? Does it make any difference to the taste? Apparently not. So if it doesn’t matter if there is, or isn’t, a stem attached, or what colour the glass is, why are we still following the rules? Let’s break with tradition, let’s fill our glass cabinets with something different, and have fun with our drinks containers. Pims can be poured out of teapots, wine can be served in anything that is vaguely bowl shaped. And cocktails? Well, the sky is the limit with those; jam jars, kilner jars, mugs (even chipped) and fish bowls. Having a drink is about enjoying yourself, having fun and letting go, don’t let silly rules contain your boozy nights any longer. Demand nonsense with your liquor.

THE PAINTED CHAIR

T

here is an interior design revolution going on. A change in how we view old worn out furniture. No longer are 80’s pine wardrobes thrown on the skip or scorned for their ugliness. From now on, all furniture will be viewed with anticipation of how good it can look – once the Annie Sloan paint is applied. Annie Sloan paint is hard to come by. Not many shops in the U.K are allowed to stock the much coveted Chalk PaintTM, a decorative paint by Annie Sloan. But here in Liverpool we are in luck. The Painted Chair, located at the Bluecoat is one such shop that sells it. I chatted to Jan the owner of The Painted Chair. the depth of colours and how they can achieve many different looks and styles. I love it when customers come in and say 'My Mum painted a chest of drawers for me in Annie Sloan paint a few years ago, I'll always keep it and it still looks fabulous.' The furniture has sentimental value to them reminding them of their loved one every time they see it.

What made you start painting furniture? When I married my husband 25 years ago we didn't have much money to set up home so I would scour junk shops picking up bits of furniture I liked. Even back then I used one of Annie Sloan's many books to help me transform my 1930s dining chairs. I've carried on collecting Annie's books, so far I've got 20.

16

What is it about painted furniture that make people like it so much? I love the fact that it’s so creative as you can get so many different looks from it; every person who paints furniture will do it differently from someone else, therefore making it unique. Customers love

Why Annie Sloan paint? I only found out about Annie Sloan paint via Pinterest (a social networking site) and originally thought she was American but in fact she lives in Oxford. At the time I was painting furniture using eggshell paint and the process was long and frustrating. Annie Sloan paint doesn't need any prep, no sanding or priming so it meant I could paint a chair or table in an afternoon. Once I started painting using Annie’s brand of decorative paint Chalk PaintTM I was totally addicted, I loved the versatility and the simplicity of the paint but I also loved that Annie is an artist so she understands colours. In May 2014 I very proudly became one of Annie's personally selected stockists, and the first one in Liverpool itself. Annie supports independent businesses as she was one herself for many years; in fact she only gave up managing her shop 18 months ago. As a stockist we receive lots of support and training from Annie and the team at Oxford. Last October I attended Annie's conference in Dinard, France and this year we are celebrating Chalk PaintTM’s 25th Birthday in Oxford with stockists coming in from all over the world. Annie also provides lots of training days in Oxford and regular webinars so we can provide the best advice and service to our customers. Jan, The Painted Chair www.paintedchair.co.uk

jackson pollock BLIND SPOTS - TATE LIVERPOOL 30 JUNE - 18 OCTOBER 2015

T

his summer Tate Liverpool presents the first exhibition in more than three decades to survey the late paintings of Jackson Pollock. Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots will introduce audiences to the artist’s practice via a selection of his important drip paintings made between 1947-50 including Summertime: Number 9A 1948 (Tate) and Number 3, 1949: Tiger 1949 (Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden). Exhibiting works from the height of the artist’s fame set against his lesser known paintings will serve to demonstrate the radical departure represented by the black pourings. The exhibition offers the opportunity to appreciate Pollock’s broader ambitions as an artist and makes these fascinating later paintings readable as ‘blind spots’ in an otherwise intensely debated career.

The black pourings, a series of black enamel and oil paintings, will be presented alongside unique works on paper and prints from the same period, which are regarded as his most important and productive output as a draughtsman. Also on display will be a number of virtually unknown and rarely seen sculptures, giving viewers the opportunity to reconsider his intentions as an artist.

the everyman ARTHUR MILLER’S THE HOOK WED 1 JULY - SAT 25 JULY

A

midst the political tensions of 1950s America, Arthur Miller's The Hook was suppressed by the FBI for fear that it could cause unrest in New York's dockyards. Now, to mark the centenary of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright’s birth, the Everyman & Playhouse and Royal & Derngate co-produce the world premiere of Miller’s ‘play for the screen’ adapted for the stage by Emmy Award-winning Ron Hutchinson. Sixty years on, the dockyards of Brooklyn’s epic waterfront will come alive on the Everyman stage for the extraordinary story of Marty Ferrara, a longshoreman who challenges the mobsters and gangs of ’50s New York and takes a stand against

the corruption he witnesses from the authorities who control the docks. The story of a close-knit community grappling with a world of crime and punishment, of changing industry and immigration from abroad, The Hook is a study in integrity and betrayal, charting one man’s struggle for meaningful change. IT’S A CHEWIER CHEW... E

verybody loves retro sweets – it’s a sugary nostalgia trip down memory lane to childhood when you tuck into fizzy cola bottles, shrimps, fried eggs the daddy of them all, Chewits. Anyone who grew up in the 80’ and 90’s will remember Chewie the Chewitsaurus. The big dinosaur who was stomping through the world’s cities, eating anything in its path – until one day a scientist stopped him

in his tracks with, Chewits. But those tasty, rubbery, flavoursome sweets have been around for a little bit longer than that - 50 fun-packed years to be precise. Each memory is different, you may remember the ‘Monster Muncher’ in one of his most iconic adverts as he munched through the Taj Mahal, the leaning tower of Pisa and the Empire State Building. Not one of these buildings could match Chewits delicious flavour and texture, after all Chewits are chewier than Barrow in Furness Bus Depot. The Chewits brand conjures up many nostalgic memories particularly for 90’s kids bopping along to ‘I like to Chew it Chew It.’ The iconic dinosaur rolling around on his bus roller skates and chewing his way through town, always evokes positive and fun memories. Chewie the Chewitsaurus holds a special place in everyone’s hearts. It all started in 1963 when J Arthur Holland invented ‘Chewzits’, a softer version of the chew many love today. Just two years and a quick name change later Chewits was born in its original flavour - Orange.

Take a trip down memory lane with your grandparents, parents or friends and remember Chewits. 50 years later Chewits are still a success story, with 8 flavour variants with much loved favourites such as Fruit Salad and Xtreme Sour Pineapple expanding the product portfolio.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary Chewits have launched some special edition retro products. Get your groove on with Chewits limited edition Blackcurrant Stick pack and retro multipack! WHITE SHOES Fashion is a fickle mistress. One day something can be the absolute height of fashion, the next we blush with embarrassment having worn it. Take the white shoe for example, not too long ago it was the pariah of the fashion world, the white stiletto was sniggered at, it was gone but not forgotten, and many a jibe was pointed in the direction of white leather. Now the joke is on us. White shoes are not only back in style - but they are this summer's must have addition to any wardrobe. Sandals, pumps, wedges or kitten heels, it doesn't matter what style of shoe adorns your feet, as long as it's white it's in style, and so are you.

brazilica festival 17th - 19th july

M

usic fans will not be disappointed as headlining this year’s festival is highly renowned Brazilian singer, instrumentalist, songwriter and record producer Marcos Valle. The multi-talented artist has produced over 300 songs spanning across bossa nova, samba and fusions of jazz, soul and dance genres, for artists all over the world. Other musical highlights include Leeds and London based 12 piece band Nubiyan Twist and Afrosamba the 8-piece band led by singer songwriter and guitarist Pilo Adami; two bands offering one unmissable night of brazil-iant music at The Kazimier on Friday 10 July. New for 2015 and building on the success of the film screenings in previous years, organisers have announced Brazilica Film Festival in association with Fazenda Rodizio Bar & Grill. Twelve films celebrating Brazilian life and culture will be screened at various venues across the city between Wed 1 – Sun 19 July, with the majority of films free to attend. There will also be a special Graffiti Art Exhibition at FACT running throughout the festival from Wed 1 – Sun 19 July which compliments the screening of Cidade Cinza, one of the films screened as part of the Film Festival. In keeping with Rio tradition where carnival balls take over the city, Garlands will be celebrating all things Brazil as they host their very first Ipanema inspired Carnival Ball on Sat 11 July – get ready to

party and dance the night away and feel like you are celebrating in Rio itself. However, the spectacular night time Carnival Parade remains the main festival highlight; the huge samba parade travels through the city filling the streets with colour, music and fun. Featuring Samba bands from across the UK and overseas, the parade takes place on Sat 18 July. Further details on the parade route will be announced shortly. There will also be a fantastic variety of free performances from visiting bands taking place across the city centre on Sat 18 & Sun 19 July which organisers will be announcing in the coming weeks. Closing this year’s Brazilica, District in the Baltic Quarter will host the carnival after party on Sat 18 July from 10pm where the samba and LatinHouse vibes are set to keep crowds partying until 3am. A night set to be full of surprises, enjoy great music, dance and performances as we say goodbye to Brazilica for another year. Tickets for this amazing Brazilica send-off are just £5, so be sure to join in for the carnival party of the year! SIZZLING SWIMWEAR

ummer beach holidays are on the horizon, it's time to make that critical decision, a one piece or two? A kimono or full on beach towel tucked under armpits, only be dropped simultaneously to jumping in the pool. But ladies, isn't it time we embrace our curves? Summer holidays come but once a year. So rather that fret over our imperfections, perhaps we should just pick a swimsuit that's in our size and get on with what's important - spending time having fun with our families. So forget your size, stop mourning the long lost thigh gap, say hello sunshine and strut your beautiful self. Now all you need is the essential big floppy hat.

Summer!

S

o my favourite look this summer is a shimmer golden eye, with a dewy cheek with highlighter, and a nude or coral mat lip during the day. Then at night to add a deeper lip, such as Kate Moss Rimmel London, Red Nose Red, number 1. I like to add a little smokey eye to the gold shimmer, and some 3D Fiberlash water resistant mascara which is amazing, no need for false lashes with that, and just a black/ brown eyeliner to the lower eye. Defining eyebrows with a little brow powder and clear gel. I always cleanse, tone and slightly moisturise the face to give the dewy fresh face look, and to have a clean canvas to work on. I use all water resistant/waterproof products and SPF, to protect from the sun, sea and sweat. I prime the face also so it holds to that base for longer lasting results. You always want a sun kissed, simple, glowing look in the summer, but not too many shimmers on the face other than eyes, or you can look a little sweaty without actually being. You just want the sun to catch the shimmers on the eyes and a little on the cheek bones. That’s my make up summer look I like to achieve.

GENTS THREADS

DENIM DONE RIGHT Introduce some blue to your wardrobe this summer, of the hard wearing denim variety. Denim, in anything other than jeans, has been rather passe in recent years, but now all has been forgiven for the hard wearing fabric. No longer is denim on denim met with gasps of abstract horror of the ultimate fashion faux par. Now it has a reposition as stylish, sexy and yes sometimes a little rugged. From light to dark washes, trim to oversize fits, 1990s distressed to sophisticated selvedge, denim isn’t just a byword for jeans this season.

WOLF ALICE - MY LOVE IS COOL ALBUM WOLF ALICE are a bunch of characters. ELLIE ROWSELL plays the effortlessly visceral front woman. THEO ELLIS is the suave punk bassist. Guitarist JOFF ODDIE is the insular romantic. And last but not least, drummer and one half of a rhythmic bromance with Theo, JOEL AMEY provides the life and soul of the party. Together Wolf Alice form a gang of loveable jerks who have spent the past two years together chasing adventure, learning how to craft and play songs. It's that sense of playfulness, of realising their dream to be a proper band, that shines throughout the 11 tracks on MY LOVE IS COOL. The fact it's fun doesn't overshadow its ambition, though. Even the familiar BROS and FLUFFY have been re-worked, now displaying pointier teeth and sharper claws. The former contains a new chorus. Whereas the latter features spoken word from Joff. From the enormous riffs of single GIANT PEACH to the muffled, urgent melodies of LISBON and hip-hop rhythms of SILK, MY LOVE IS COOL is a masterful, explorative statement of Wolf Alice's multiple characters. It unfolds like a play, and ends on THE WONDERWHY, which contains echoes of other tracks within, like a final reprise. For a band named after a literary reference, fiction is a conscious part of their manifestation. They lament the lack of theatre among upcoming bands and don't want their appeal to be limited to new music fans that pride themselves on championing the Next Big Thing. MY LOVE IS COOL is for music lovers period.

DEFINITELY NOW, ALBUM LIAM BAILEY

3/5

Soul/Rock powerhouse, Liam Bailey release of his debut solo album, Definitely NOW, this month via Flying Buddha /Columbia Records. Like Oasis - Liam Bailey’s gritty, working class childhood heroes - the singer/songwriter’s story starts on a bleak council estate in Nottingham. Initially in a hip-hop collective and then as lead singer in a band, he played the Nottingham circuit, but it wasn’t until he moved south, into a London bedsit flat in Stoke Newington, and began exploring a more acoustic sound through solo open-mic gigs that he truly found his sound. Definitely Now is sometimes aggy, jabby, postpunk and tense (‘On My Mind’), at other times it is deliciously melodic and warm (‘Stun Me’). The album is a brilliantly volatile ride through everything Liam has experienced, and at times, still struggles with; Depression, loss of love and lack of self control. But there is optimism in his writing too, the darkness is laced with hope. The album features lead single, ‘Villain’ featuring A$AP Ferg. The record received a huge level of radio support from the likes of Zane Lowe, Fearne Cotton, Mistajam and Lauren Laverne.

heart screenings hit a grand total at goodison

E

verton in the Community’s partnership with the Vital Sounds Foundation (VSF) and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital reached a significant milestone recently when the 1000th individual received a free heart screening test via the initiative. Goodison played host to a screening event, facilitated by the Club’s official charity, to identify if any 15-35 year old were at risk of sudden cardiac arrest on Saturday 6 June. Held in the 1878 Suite, the free heart screenings were ongoing throughout the day and were utilised by members of the general public, as well as Everton in the Community participants and Club staff. Of the 86 people screened, three referrals were made to the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, with a further three referrals for high blood pressure. Chris Clarke, who was the 1000th person to be screened made his way in at 12.30pm and was unaware of the stat until being informed by staff on the day. Speaking of the little bit of history the helped create Chris said: “What a milestone reached by the Vital Signs Foundation and all involved with

this initiative! It was quite poignant that my little boy Tristan was with me today as he, along with my daughters’ Leona and Halle are the reason I came to get screened. Becoming a father makes you more aware of your own mortality and I’d do anything to make sure I’m there for my kids as they grow up.” Michael Salla, Health and Wellbeing Manager at Everton in the Community, added: “In line with our Health and Wellbeing Strategy, we're delighted to be able to host this screening to help identify any heart abnormalities that would otherwise go undetected. Furthermore, thanks to the support of Everton Football Club, we are able to considerably raise the awareness of the condition and VSF to help ensure more young people are screened.” Every week, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people aged between 15-35 years old die every week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions. The Club’s official charity and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital fully recognise and support the work the Vital Signs Foundation charity are undertaking to promote awareness and screening of otherwise fit and healthy undiagnosed individuals within our community. To support the VSF Charity in continuing its free delivery screenings across the region, text CHAW25 plus your donation amount to 70070.

go outdoors with ross kemp

R

oss Kemp Kemp’sshifted shift from star from bad bad boy soap star to a BAFTA award winning investigative journalist in the series Ross Kemp on Gangs in 2006 for ITV. In the years since, he’s worked with Sky on a string of uncompromising and gritty documentary films, including, in Afghanistan and, since 2011, Extreme World. His love of outdoor adventure led him to joining forces with Go Outdoors stores, which is the UK’s largest retailer of outdoor equipment and clothing offering customers everything under one roof for enjoyment of the great outdoors. Our Editor, Joy Lewis interviewed Ross at the recent opening of Go Outdoors Liverpool.

46

Hello and welcome back to Liverpool! Thank you, I love it here what a fantastic city. And I am accepted here, which I am grateful for because people from Liverpool don’t hold back in their feelings for you – good or bad, the reaction

by Joy Lewis

to me is good, thank god. It’s such a vibrant place, I’ve been away for two years, it’s changed so much even in that short time. This is why I was more than happy to come here today and support the opening of Go Outdoors store in Liverpool. And look at the turn out, there are lots of people here with their families and kids, this is a great store for them because there is everything that you could need under one roof. The store has a good ethos, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the equipment here, so they can help everyone from beginner to pro. Do you like the outdoors adventure lifestyle yourself? Well, I have just bought a pad in the country and finally moved out of London. I can’t

believe I didn’t do this years ago to be honest. So the outdoors life when I’m not filming comes more naturally and easily. When I’m not sat reading in my garden with a glass of wine, we go out as a family, walking and exploring the countryside. When my baby is a little older we will do more, currently he’s still strapped to one of us when we go out. I come from a military family, so adventure, and pushing my limits comes naturally to me. I want the same yearning to go out and explore to be passed to my children. So it’s great to see a place like GO Outdoors open, where everyone can find what they need for their own adventures. Was it your love of adventure that lured you from acting to investigative journalism? I do love a challenge. But it was more timing that took me down that path. When I left Eastenders I joined ITV, on a very lucrative contract. While I was there I was asked to do a documentary about gangs, I think because of my family’s heavy military background and my knowledge of guns – terrible things that they are. While I was doing that I met a guy called “Blood Hound”, he had been shot 27 times, I didn’t believe him until he showed me. Meeting him really opened my eyes. At the same time of doing this MTV was selling gangster style lifestyles was a good thing and a clever thing to get into. Which it isn’t for anyone, for example if you are in a gang in Compton in LA if you join a gang by the time you are 18 you are dead or doing a life sentence. Which is not good and nothing macho, there is no achievement about that. So we started doing documentaries on gangs and that’s how it happened. So how did you move to Sky as that’s where your programmes have won the BAFTA’s? It was a luck thing, it’s not what you know but who. I knew someone at Sky so I phoned them up and pitched the idea about showing the truth about gangs, not the pretty MTV side of them, but the truth. They jumped on the idea and we started working almost straight away making documentaries and it spiralled from there. I am very lucky that

I can literally look at a map and say I think we should go there, investigate the gangs or people there, and we do. And I go with the same team as I always do, we are like a family. It’s my own company, we are a little family that know each other inside out. We stick together and get each other through some of the scariest situations that we find ourselves in. You are working on your latest project Extreme World now, is it emotionally and physically draining? Yes it is very much, but it’s important I think. What Extreme World does is show the world as it truly is and informs people, or at least it dissuades people from making judgements. I have a friend in the SAS who says that unless you have seen it, lived it or experienced it personally, don’t make judgements because you don’t know anything about it. And that’s true, what I have seen and learned over this series continues to open my mind. It is distressing and draining, but worth it. PIMP MY BBQ FIRE UP THE BARBIE!

A

s soon as the sun makes an appearance, the first thing us Brits to is plan a barbecue. Within hours of a positive weather report, a vague whiff of charred sausage floats upon the air. And with that haze is the accompanying chatter of men discussing all things barbecue; the merits of different lighting techniques, gas or coal, to brand the meat or not. This is the ultimate man domain, the last post, the final bastion of unadulterated blokeyness. So when it comes to flame-grilled food, this turbo-charged, chrome-finished, gadgetloaded BBQ really does come with all the trimmings. Asda chiefs commissioned the dream machine after asking 2,000 shoppers what would make their ultimate barbecue. If it wasn’t a barbecue it would be on top gear. The hi-tech grill features: • Selfie Stick • iPad stand • Headlights • Spotlights • Flashing neon lights • Speakers • Bottle opener • Bottle holder • Exhaust pipe And to go with this all time ultimate barbecue 50 the best tools and marinades are required

simon rimmer

Chef Du Patron, Entertainer and Red – the perfect recipe

S

imon Rimmer is one of the hottest names in the kitchen at the moment. His Channel 4 programme, Sunday Brunch has been running now for 4 years and the viewing figures just keep going up. It’s not just that Rimmer makes food full of flavour that people like and can cook at home, it is the buzzy chemistry between himself and co-host, Tim Lovejoy that appeals as they regularly rib each other about the success of their football teams, Simon being a staunch Liverpool supporter and Tim a Chelsea Blue; as well as their collective love of alternative music and their disarming questioning where they delve in to celebrities likes and dislikes both in the kitchen and on the small screen that makes the show so popular. As well as a hectic schedule of TV presenting that keeps the wolves from the kitchen door, Rimmer has been a working chef and continues to be one, for over 20 years. His first foray in to restaurants being the opening of Greens in Didsbury, a speciality vegetarian restaurant that has won countless awards and one that he almost fell in to by accident as Rimmer explained “I hadn’t been formerly trained as a chef but I did have some experience and I felt that there was a huge gap in the market for vegetarian food that looked good and tasted great. I am not a vegetarian but I really did believe we could do something different and after winning Manchester Restaurant of the year and gaining critical acclaim with our customers it would appear we were right.” Rimmer added to his restaurants with Earls in Hale and latterly with the Elephant which is going great guns in Walton, Liverpool. Rimmer was always keen to find the right place to pursue his interests in Liverpool and the Elephant was the right place. “I have always had a love affair with Anfield and Liverpool FC and it was one of my priorities to find the right place and again do something that no-one else was doing in the pub sector. Everything we do is about flavour, tastes and freshly prepared food and the real sharing ethos of families and friends. That’s what we have created at the Elephant. I am very proud of what we have done in Walton and it seems that people are really enjoying our take on pub food”

Simon is appearing at the NWFL Festival in Stanley Park on 4th July as part of the Stanley Park Food Festival and organiser Stephen Wundke is delighted to have him headlining again. “Simon has been appearing with us at our shows almost right from the start and so when I asked him if he would appear in the shadows of Anfield to do some cooking on our stage he jumped at it. He is not only a fabulous chef but in our opinion he is the best Celebrity Chef entertainer in the UK and I know that anyone who sees him will be simply delighted with his on stage show. He is a class act in everything he does and deserves his undoubted success” The Stanley Park Food Festival takes place form the 3rd-5th July for more information go to

All Hail the Chippy britain’s favourite dish

A

ll hail the local chippy – as fish and chips have has been voted the nation’s favourite British dish, says new research. A poll of 2,000 Brits revealed the traditional seaside fare to beat the roast dinner, Victoria Sponge and the Cornish Pasty to come top of Britain’s favourite meals and snacks. Bacon butties, baked beans and Shepherd’s Pie also ranked highly in the list of 40, along with buttered crumpets and a cream tea. A proud 43 per cent of the adults polled even said British cuisine is the best in the world. Tom Lowes, Marketing Manager at Sykes Cottages who commissioned the survey, said ‘’We want to try flavours from all over the world, and it’s great that it’s so available to us. But we Brits are undoubtedly spoilt when it comes to great local cuisine, the top three are firm British favourites, but the list demonstrates that regional delicacies whet the nation’s appetite too.’’ The research showed seven in ten of the adults to rate a fish supper as the top traditional British meal – preferably straight out of newspaper at the seaside. The traditional roast dinner complete with gravy and Yorkshire puddings came second, ideally eaten at Sunday lunchtime in a decent British pub. While a full English breakfast usually consisting of bacon, sausages, baked beans and fried eggs made up the iconic top three. 54

One in eight said fry-ups are most satisfying on a Sunday morning – other food made tastier by an event included a hot pie at a football match, and strawberries and cream while watching tennis. And the chippy was shown to be a trove of Brit favourites, as the list also featured the Northern picks of mushy peas and chips with gravy. But a Sunday lunch was most brag-worthy, as half admitted they would serve up traditional roast dinner to international guests, followed by a fruit crumble and a cheese platter.

BEST BRITISH FOOD 1. Fish ‘n’ chips 2. Roast dinner with Yorkshire pudding 3. Full English breakfast 4. Bacon butties 5. Apple crumble 6. Strawberries and cream 7. Bangers and mash 8. Cream tea 9. Shepherd’s Pie 10. Crumpets

personal effectiveness PART 2

P

Personal Effectiveness part 1 in our June edition I said “we cannot overcome our problems with the same level of thinking as they were created with.”Your RAS has a lot to do with this. Imagine your brain is a filing cabinet with all your past successes, past failures, things that have gone well and things that haven’t gone to plan etc. When we ask ourselves questions like 1. Why does this always happen to me? 2. Why don’t I have any good luck? 3. Why don’t I get a good break? 4. Problems come in 3’s I wonder what’s next? Your brain runs away to the filling cabinet to get you evidence to support what you think. We have to be very careful what we ask ourselves. However imagine if we starting asking questions like. 1. Something good’s coming, I wonder what it’s going to be? 2. I’m sure this will go well, it has in the past? 3. My confidence is growing? 4. I’m getting better every day? Again your brain will go to find evidence to support these statements. We have something in our brain called our Reticular Activating System or RAS. It’s our gateway that allows information into our brain in line with what we ask of it and focus on. Let me give you an example, when you purchased your car, there was a number of similar cars on the road that you may or may not have noticed. What happened the day you first drove your new car? Were there more or less of those cars on the road? I’m sure you noticed many more, same model, same colour etc. There was exactly the same amount; however your brain allowed you to NOTICE them as they had become important. Nothing had really changed apart from what had become important to you. This is why we get more of what we look for, challenges or solutions. Why is a trouble maker always in trouble? Because that’s what they look for? Your

reticular activating system is like a filter between your conscious mind and your subconscious mind. It takes instructions from your conscious mind and passes them on to your subconscious. So listen to what you ask your mind to support, good or bad you will get the responses you ask of your mind. A fabulous book to support this mindset is The Secret by Rhonda Bryne amongst many, this is not new information. It takes 28 days to create new habits, so for the next 4 weeks whenever faced with a challenge, accept where you are and ask yourself a solution based question, your mind will massively help you out or lead you in a direction to find the best solution for you. Do this until this habit becomes OUR habit. You know what they say; Practice makes Permanent. If we can change something, change it, if we can’t change it change the way we think about it. CRAIG phillips- DIYHello Lifestyle Readers, I was lucky enough to be invited along as a special guest to an open day at The Hodgkinson Brickwork Academy at the college’s Ilkeston campus to check out what’s happening there. Let me tell you, I was more than impressed. On the day there was a real mix of people at the academy all trying taster sessions and experiencing a day in the life of a brickie. You would normally expect to see plenty of 14 and 15 year olds at an event of this kind, looking at their options for the future, and, while there were scores of school-leavers in attendance, I was surprised and pleased to see a good number of older people seeing if construction has something to offer them. This month I was lucky enough to receive a brand new Volvo XC60 courtesy of Castle Donington based Greenwich Knight, one of the country’s leading bespoke car buying service providers. I’m really chuffed with this new vehicle and the way the team did all the legwork for me. I couldn’t be happier with their service and the spec on the car and, despite it being a fairly long drive home, I’m looking forward to a really good run. As you may well know, I do a lot of work with paint-spraying experts Wagner and last month demonstrated the best way to spray paint your exteriors showing painting fencing, a garden shed, a bird table and metal railings. Check out the Wagner UK YouTube channel to see the full video. Finally, I had wonderful evening at the Rainbows Charity Ball at the Dorchester Hotel in London. Organised by my management company, Champions, it was a fantastic, star-studded event!

All the best,

Craig. 64

FITTING LETTERBOX IN NEW DOOR Materials t

Letterbox set, includes screws & bolts

Tools t t t t t

Cordless drill & jigsaw & blade 8 & 12mm standard or spade drill bit Set square Tape measure Pencil

Start off by setting your position of the letterbox in your door, you will want it to be around 800/900mm high from the floor, and in the centre when measuring from left to right, the letterbox kit will have a sleeve within it, use this as a template to draw around on your doors as this will be the exact size rectangle hole that is required to be cut into door. Using you drill and space piece drill 4 holes in the door in all 4 corners of your marked out letterbox, this will allow you to get the blade from your jigsaw though the door and start cutting out the rectangular hole. Once you have cut your 4 edges out the centre piece should slid out and you should be able to fit the centre sleeve from the letterbox kit through the new hole. Now place the front section of the letterbox over the sleeve and there will be two holes each side of the letterbox cover, using your pencil mark the door thought the holes and drill on the marks right though the door using a 8mm drill bit, this will allow the two bolts that come with the kit of parts slide though the door and hold both the front and rear cover of the letterbox together.

hen I was a teenager I was a size 10 and remained so until my early twenties, creeping up to a size 12. I was never classed as skinny due to having big boobs and a Kim Kardashian bum…. but I was in proportion and never had any body hang ups. Twenty years and six children later I am averaging a size 14, depending on which shop I go. In my head I am two sizes smaller and it wasn’t until a wave of photos of me came back to slap me in the face and make me face the harsh reality. It’s not rocket science to work out that I need to tone up. I don’t believe in diets, life is too short to deprive yourself of little luxuries in moderation. But with two teenage children working out three times a week I decided to join them after weeks of nagging from them to tag along . Two weeks into my training, and having 10 hours of sessions, I feel amazing.

I may not look any different but I am filled with renewed positivity and, if it’s possible, to have even more zest for life. I can think of a thousand excuses not to go training, but I am so lucky to have wonderful teenagers who want me to go with them, to encourage me to accompany them and, most of all, aren’t embarrassed by my sweaty, huffing and puffing as I attempt skipping, jab, jab, hook, uppercut, left hook out of sync. But most of all I have finally found a sport I love. It’s great way to diffuse tension, frustration and stress. There are people of all shapes and ages at the gym. Perhaps it is my attempt to steer away a mid life crisis. Whatever it is I am not giving up. It’s never too late to change and who knows, I may even drop a dress size along the way. It is, however, important to be proud of who you are, love yourself whatever you look like, but embark on a new hobby, you may surprise yourself how much you enjoy it. Stay stylish,
