Get Exposed with a Golden Glow did you know that Liverpool is the UK's biggest spray tan market in the UK & Exposed Spray Tanning is one of the fastest growing spray tan brands in the UK, already dominating the South of England and Ireland spray tan market. If like me you can blend into the snow in winter & look positively ill when you haven't been in the sun then why not put some colour back into your cheeks whilst avoiding those harmful UV Rays? There are several reasons why I have not booked in for a spray tan whilst working in the beauty industry for the past few years & you may be able to relate… I don’t want to smell like BISCUITS!!!! I hate FREEZING to death whilst being tanned!!! I refuse to be turned ORANGE AGAIN & after a few days I can resemble a zebra with all of the streaks on my body!! Well Exposed Spray Tan UK is the first spray tanning brand I am happy to say has given me a gorgeous glow that lasts longer than traditional tans, is almost odourless, contains no alcohol (this is a good thing I promise) so is not as cold & with the added moisturisers my tan fades naturally and evenly.
You can also choose a bespoke colour for any skin tone as the brand offers everything from a 6% natural tan - gorgeous for brides, men & anyone that wants a natural glow without people thinking they have been tanned right up to a deep, rich bronzed look. The Express Tan is fantastic for those girls n guys on the go. You can wash the guide colour off after only 2 hours to reveal a beautiful golden colour underneath & that is it done! If you would like to learn how to Get Exposed… contact your local salon.

Lifestyle lady sings the blues
Rebecca Ferguson Local lass Rebecca Ferguson, whose voice has been compared to Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone and Dusty has reached for the stars with her third album “Lady Sings the Blues” which is being released later this month. The album is Rebecca’s interpretation of the iconic Billie Holiday album, whose story led to the multi award winning and record starring Diana Ross. Ferguson now brings her own experience and story to these classic songs for a new generation. In a quite brilliant reinterpretation of some of the most moving songs you will ever hear in your life. 10
Interview by Joy Lewis
Lifestyle lady sings the blues
It takes a brave lady to take on the great Billie Holiday – how did the album come about?
How do you manage being a mum of three and having a career in the music industry?
Well, it was my manager, he invited me down to the bar to have a drink. He told me that both him and the head of the record label had been keen to re-interpret Billie Holiday’s classic album for years. He said that they had been looking for somebody with the right voice that would be able to carry the songs successfully and they told me they thought that I was that person. Diana Ross was the last person and they wanted to ask me if I was ready for it and if I thought I could do it. So I went away and I had a think about it and I went back to them and said, “Yeah I’m willing to do it.” We then started work on it and at the beginning we were just doing demos but when I heard them back I just fell in love with album.
It’s hard work, but lots of people do it, I am just like any other working mum, and every working mum knows it’s all about balance and juggling. But I am very lucky with what I do, not all working mums have the same opportunities to choose when to work that I do, so I can’t really complain. I also want to be a role model to my kids. I want to show them what hard work is so they know that this is how Mummy gets them all the lovely things that they have.
Have you always been a fan of Holiday?
Yes, not only of her voice but I also admired her too. I looked into Billie’s life when I was at college and I’ve always been touched by how troubled her life was and how difficult it was for her. But she never missed going on stage, no matter what, she always delivered. 2014 had its ups and downs in your personal life thathad was its unfortunately documented 2014 ups and well downs in your in all the newspapers. personal life that was unfortunately
How is the album tour going, any dates planned for Liverpool yet?
The tour is going great thanks, it’s very busy but very exciting. I will come and perform in Liverpool, I have to it’s my home crowd after all. I am just waiting to have more dates confirmed at the moment. I love performing in Liverpool, it’s always a great party and my biggest audience, everybody is so supportive here I love it.
well documented in all the newspapers. Did creating this album empower you?
Yes the papers were all over it. But I’m just a normal girl going through what happens to a lot of Liverpool girls, but I had to do it publicly. So yes in creating this album it was a good outlet for me. It helped me channel everything that I was feeling, especially on songs like ‘Embraceable you.’ I was lucky to have something to work on and take my mind off the worries, not everybody has that.
The “Lady Sings the Blues” album will be released on RCA Records on March 9, 2015 Billie Holiday’s centenary year.

he Liverpool Broadband Vouchers Scheme, which has been operating in parts of Liverpool City Centre since September 2014, has now been opened up to applications from across the entire city council boundary area. It gives eligible SMEs up to £3,000 towards the capital costs of a super/ultra-fast broadband connection. It is being implemented as part of a national drive to provide a much better service of superfast broadband. Councillor Gary Millar, Cabinet member for business, enterprise and investment, said: “We want Liverpool to be the best digitally connected city in the UK. “We have a long road ahead to achieve this but the expansion of this scheme is a major 12
leap in taking the city’s economy to the next level. We are competing on a global stage and investment in our digital infrastructure is a real priority for the city. The scheme has proved successful in the parts of Liverpool City Centre that have been covered to date and it is hoped that the expansion of the scheme will result in many more Liverpool businesses taking up the offer.” The voucher can be used towards the cost of making the physical connection to business premises but cannot pay for monthly rental or for any IT equipment. The connection needs to give a real change in service speed - upgrading to a minimum of 30Mbps on a shared line or 20Mbps on a dedicated business grade line More information on the scheme is available at www.connectionvouchers.co.uk/liverpool

Lifestyle what's on tate liverpool Tate Liverpool presents the first UK solo exhibition of the Hungarian-born artist, designer and educator György Kepes (1906– 2001), bringing together 80 photographic works and collages for the first time. On display will be photographs, photomontages and photograms, all of which were made shortly after Kepes’s emigration to the United States in 1937. His ‘camera-less’ photograms were made in the darkroom by arranging and exposing objects directly on top of light-sensitive paper; juxtaposing geometric, industrial, typographic and organic forms to create images that are poised between abstraction and representation.

Settle in for a great night St Georges Hall, because Ricky Tomlinson, who made being a couch potato an artform, is being interviewed live by Mike Neary, for the popular ‘In Conversation With’ series this March

Lifestyle a royle chat
The event will follow the popular tried and test In Conversation format. Ricky will pick which will then be performed as entirely live on the night. The audience will also be treated to stills and clips from Ricky’s long and impressive career. On his being invited to join “In Conversation” he said, thoroughly looking forward to being an In Conversation guest. It follows the wonderful honour I received from the people of Liverpool just three months ago when I was awarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool, that was the biggest accolade that I have ever received. I hope some familiar faces from my past will attend and enjoy sharing our stories and anecdotes. My taste in music is very simple but each of my chosen pieces means something very special to me, so I hope the audience enjoys the music and the entire evening.” I asked what people might expect from the show which see’s Ricky being interviewed live on stage, “The audience will get the truth, that’s what I can promise. They may not like it. They may not even agree with it, but the audience will hear the truth. I won’t be holding anything back, my politics, my opinions and my tales of woe – I think they will be in for a real treat. I’ve lots of stories to tell, good and bad”. Ricky, not only famous for the acting roles he has played but he is also a political activist. On his introduction in to politics he said, “I was introduced to politics in prison. This is where a Catholic Priest told me that I was a political prisoner. And to be honest, I hadn’t realised that till he said it, but I soon came to the understanding that I couldn’t be described as anything else. Then I read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, while I was in prison, and it changed my life. It was
given to me by the governor, who was a wonderful man – an ex-construction worker who told me it was the building labourer’s bible. Everything that Tressell described – dangerous, inhuman conditions, irregular employment, pitiful pay – were exactly the same things we were protesting about in 1972. I sat there and thought this is me, that ago, Ricky announced that he would be running for Liverpool for the Socialist Labour party, but had to withdraw when his son became unwell. He’s pretty sure he would have won. “I would think so, yeah.” So would he consider running this time around? “No, I’m too old now, I’m 75 that’s the snag. There’s too much to do and so so much that needs to change. People don’t vote. I can’t really blame them, they don’t know enough about politics, but they all have an opinion on the X Factor and vote in that. If people got that interested in the country around them, then we would see serious change. We need working class people in Parliament, but they need to run in order for people to vote for them. I’m all for equality too, 50% of parliament should be women because 50% of the population are women – it just makes sense you see. If these changes happened then we might see less corruption at the top.” “So yeah – I think people will enjoy the In Conversation with me, I’m a whingeing scouser, I don’t let any injustices lie, and I’ll be telling the audience about my life, the political conspiracies against me, government secrecy that I am determined to uncover, and probably, there will be a few jokes in there too.”
In Conversation With Ricky Tomlinson takes place on Wednesday 4 March in the Concert Room of St George’s Hall Liverpool www.ticketquarter.co.uk

The new version is being staged by Pulse in collaboration with producer and stage writer Rob Fennah and new co-producer Bill Elms. They are joined by director Bob Eaton. The show will celebrate 21 years on stage during its Merseyside tour which also starred Eithne Browne. Helen Forrester’s Twopence to Cross the Mersey tells the true story of a young girl and her formerly wealthy family as they are suddenly thrown into poverty during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Leaving behind the nannies, servants and comfortable middle-class life in the South West of England, they uproot their shattered lives and choose Liverpool as the place to start again to rebuild their dreams and fortune. Unbeknown to them however, a terrible shock awaits them.

I went in expecting to get a burger and fries, which of course is on the menu, but was instead swayed by the varied menu and chose the coconut and squash curry which they added some chicken in for me - to date this has been the best chicken curry I have every eaten in my life.. The baby enjoyed sweetcorn on the cob, but it would have been better without the
mayonnaise and cheese that it was lathered in. We also enjoyed a pulled duck fritata which arrived piping hot. The service was brilliant, the ambiance of the restaurant was fabulous and it soon arrived. One small criticism was the paper menus we were given which were stained with previous diners’ food when we asked to see the desert menu. It

I was in a band for a short while, but my inability to be successful in a band was quite obvious. I quickly realised that we would never make it and I would never be able to say Thank you and Goodnight. So I set my mind to composing. This is easier for is easier than writing a song? “Oh yes, well for me anyway. My creativity comes about as a reaction, I see something and I can hear the music that goes with it. Sit me in a room and tell me to write a song, and I’d still be there for days and come up empty”. Is the process instinctive? “Sometimes it just pops in there, like for the theme tune for Stargate, that one popped into my head in the car. But other times it’s not just gifted to me, and I have to work at it. Sometimes it takes
me when I was young, they are replayed over and over again for years – it’s something that was exciting but not something you want to get wrong. Film is also an incredibly isolating experience, you lock yourself away from months on end and you emerge blinking into the light, and if you are lucky you may even be invited to your own premier! And when I write for T.V that music going direct into people’s homes, that makes it more intimate. No matter what I am writing for I put myself in the audiences shoes, what do I want to feel, what emotions do I need to evoke to take it to that next level” create sounds. “Oh yeah, anything that can be used to make sound can be an instrument. On Casino Royal I was looking for percussion instruments I was given, goats testicles to try, there were perfect so I used them. They were dried though - otherwise they just get squishy”. In the Liverpool concert he will be chatting to the audience and conducting an orchestra “I’m not a natural conductor, I don’t really like it. Thankfully the orchestra is very talented so I can stand there and just wave at them. To be honest, I could drop down dead and 80% of the concert would still go on, they are that good. But I will be introducing pieces, playing in others and chatting with the audience – it’s a more involved concert experience. On playing in Liverpool, at the philharmonic in April “I’m really looking forward to it, I have been before when I was working on the Olympics music – we used a Liverpool children’s choir for it.“

mercedes-benz fashion week The models of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week took a final walk down the runway in February and said farewell to the New York tents that have been their fashionable 'home' every six months for the last five years. I have covered every season here, photographing hundreds of shows and I will be very sad to see it go. For this is a fond farewell to NYFW as we know it. The fashion world will bring their pucker and pout back to somewhere in the City again next September, but, as yet, that destination is unknown. This is Autumn/Winter 2015 Originally from Merseyside, Anton Brookes is a Fashion/Lifestyle and Street Photographer now living and working in New York City.

he daily grind of city life takes its toll on all of us. They say the mirror never lies and this is especially true when it comes to people living such busy lives. From late nights and overnighters at the office to late night parties and living it up on weekends, every action results in a visible reaction. Meals eaten partially while rushing off to work, or hurried snacking on the run means insufficient nutrition, which again shows up in your health and fitness levels over a period of time. Travelling during peak hours, results in dust and grime accumulating on your body. Commuting like this, month after month, with vehicle fumes bombarding you at every traffic jam is definitely not a recipe for good health. Drinking less water to sit through lengthy meetings and avoid frequent visits to the loo is also an unhealthy, yet often unavoidable habit that reflects upon people's mental and physical well being. The beneficiary effect of the spa has been discovered thousands of years ago and the spa industry has evolved a lot as well. Hydrotherapy creates both relaxing and healthy experience through its three main ingredients: heat, massage and buoyancy. The warm water has the ability to dilate the blood vessels and thus to increase blood flow to damaged or sore tissues and stimulate the recovery process by allowing oxygen and various nutrients to the body. Soaking in a hot spa will also carry away the lactic acid that is built up in muscles during exercises and remove the stiffness after a heavy physical activity. Thus, warm spa has found its application for rehabilitative therapies and is being recommended by many physicians and physiotherapists. Hot spa has also important non-physical benefits on the person by revitalizing one's mind and spirit. The buoyancy in warm water 42 will slow down your pulse and the massaging

jets will stimulate your blood circulation, thus giving you energy and making your muscles and skin relaxed. It is proved that by regular use of the spa you can lose weight and reduce cellulite. This would be a very pleasant substitute for the exhausting work-out in the gym, since you can simply relax and tone the body tissues. Moreover, those that have problems with sleeping can find the resolution by soaking in a warm spa and thus relieving stress before going to bed. Almost every person suffers from stress in their everyday life, which causes the heart work harder and the digestion slow down. Stress has a negative effect on the processes in the body and, according to different studies, 80% of diseases are stress related. Besides hydrotherapy, you can enjoy a massage in the spa and stimulate the release of endorphins. This way you will remove the accumulated stress, feel better and ready for the new challenges of life. You can feel the benefits of the spa services during all seasons. While more research is needed to confirm the benefits of massage, some studies have found massage may also be helpful for: Anxiety Digestive disorders Fibromyalgia Headaches Insomnia related to stress Myofascial pain syndrome Paresthesias and nerve pain Soft tissue strains or injuries Sports injuries Temporomandibular joint pain Beyond the benefits for specific conditions or diseases, some people enjoy massage because it often involves caring, comfort, a sense of empowerment and creating deep connections with their massage therapist.

The Easy Way!
Contouring and highlighting is a Hollywood-beauty secret that has gained popularity with the masses. 3. CONTOURED ANGLE BRUSH
THE TOOLS
First, there’s 3 things you need: • Highlighter • Bronzer • Contoured angle brush
1. HIGHLIGHTER
Don’t let a contoured angle brushes scare you! They look kinda weird, no? But this is really needed for sculpting and shading your cheekbones.
MAC mineralise skinfinish - soft and gentle
A highlighter is a makeup product in several formulas (powder, liquid, cream) that will bring some kind of light to your face. This is a must-have for bringing out your cheekbones.
2. BRONZER After getting a highlighter product, it’s time to get the “de-highlighter” product, St Tropez Bronzer in other words the exact opposite – while the highlighter is meant to highlight the skin, this product is meant to deepen and shade the skin. While there are many products – some made for contouring – I find the most natural looking are matte bronzers.

Our core philosophy at Joanne Willcox Clinics is to care for your body, well-being and happiness, and we supplement treatments with advice based on a detailed assessment of lifestyle and diet. But if you are expecting to add healthy juices and smoothies to a diet of chips, chocolate biscuits and lashings of wine, and still see some kind of miraculous Most doctors will tell you there is no such thing as unhealthy food, it’s an unhealthy diet and portion sizes that is the problem. As a despairing colonic hydrotherapist I see unwell and obese patients that ignore my advice, yet happily inform me that they are drinking ‘a whole carton of orange juice every day now’, alongside their usual four cans of cola. Sadly, one doesn’t magically cancel out the other.
The Joanne Willcox RESTORE CLEANSE JUICE RANGE contains vegetables (naturally lower in sugar), and will provide vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in a convenient way. Even choosing one juice a day will do you heaps of nutritional favours, as long as it’s not used to wash down a takeaway. those links. For others, it is simply an excuse to have a 24 hour party. And oh what a party it will be.
BUT WHO IS ST PATRICK, WHAT DID HE DO? AND WHY DID HE DO IT?
A long long time ago around AD 373 – maybe in England, Scotland or even Wales, there lived a young boy called Patrick. Actually his name wasn’t Patrick until he converted to Christianity later in life - his real name was probably Maewyn Succat. Until the age of 16 he lived a normal life until one day he was stolen by Irish raiders, who bundled him back to Ireland where he was made to work as a shepherd for 6 years, under a druid slave master. During these years Patrick was lonely, and prayed up to 100 times a day. It was then that an angel appeared to him telling him to escape and that there was a boat waiting to carry him back to England. Once back in England he joined a monastery and eventually became a Bishop. But then the Angel appeared to him again telling him to go back to Ireland and tell everyone there about god, and to turn the people away from being druids to being Christians. Which he did, for twenty years by traveling the whole of Ireland baptising people and building monasteries, schools and churches throughout the land. There are also a lot of legends surrounding Patrick such making all the snakes leave Ireland and even raising people from the dead. By the time he died, on 17 March 461 (or 493, depending on which date you started your calculation), he left behind an organised church, the see of Armagh, and an island of Christians. This date 17 March has been commemorated as St Patrick's Day ever since.
An Essenc’ial Night Out! Essence of Ireland is set to hit New Brighton
and Preston in April 2015 with it’s powerful new show. Set against the backdrop of Ireland, England and America in the 19th century, Essence of Ireland tells the story of love, joy, happiness and heartache endured by Coro McGowen and Sean Dempsey as they are separated by emigration from each other and their beloved Ireland. As the story moves across to England and then on to America, the show takes you on a journey through many historical events including America’s introduction to rock and roll and John F Kennedy’s historic presidential visit to Ireland in 1963. Creative Director Ged Graham, says: “We set out not just to tell a powerful love story; but to tell a bigger tale based on true events about the love between a man and his country – something which audiences really relate to.” Music featured in the show includes ‘Galway
Girl’, ‘Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears’, ‘Tell me Ma’ and ‘Irish Rover’ along with original scores. Pupils from local Bolger Cunningham School of Irish Dancing will be performing at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton on April 17th and the Whelan-Joyce School of Irish Dancing join the show at the Charter Theatre in Preston on April 18th.

Lifestyle drumming up enthusiasm
AL MURRAY
Drumming up Enthusiasm 50
Lifestyle drumming up enthusiasm Al Murray might be an award winning comedian, but he also has a lifelong passion for playing the drums. He explains why he’s getting involved with Learn To Play Day, the flagship event of the UK’s Music For All charity. Al Murray is a busy man these days. The comedian has donned his famous red blazer to run for ‘guv’norment’ as his comic alter ego ‘the Pub Landlord’ in May’s General Election, taking on UKIP’s Nigel Farage for a South Thanet seat with his ‘commons sense’ campaign. But did you know Murray’s also a drum enthusiast? The musical comedian, alongside musician and TV presenter Jools Holland, is the leading ambassador of Learn To Play Day, the flagship event of the UK’s Music For All Charity, designed to encourage people of all ages to take up a musical instrument. The premise, Murray says, is “quite a simple one.” Budding musicians simply need to turn up at one of the participating venues - last year there were 117 up and down the country - to have a go at their instrument of choice, free of charge. “Across the country and music shops all over the place there’s a chance for you to come in and get your hands on an instrument and find out if you have got it, basically,” Murray says. Murray has been involved over the last few years, teaching people “a few simple beats” at a music shop called Yamaha Music London on London’s Wardour Street and he enjoys his encounters with the public. “Yeah, it’s really, really, really good fun. And the thing is, especially with the drums, drumming is waking up the street and having a heartbeat. We’ve all got those inside us. If I say it’s easy I’ll get loads of drummers moaning, but you can do it. It’s instrument number one, the drums.” If you’re thinking ‘hang on, what does the Pub Landlord know about drumming?’, then you’d be mistaken. Murray has played the drums since childhood and currently
plays in two amateur bands. He says that “it’s something that has really enriched my life” but wants people to know it’s never too late to learn. “Well the thing is I’m still learning. A lot of people play sport, but one of the problems with sport is that the older you get, you get slower you get fatter you get more prone to injury or whatever, but that’s not the case with music. It’s something that you can take with you all through your life. And have an appreciation of. If you play, you maybe have a different way of looking at it as well.” It sounds like drumming is the career he secretly wishes he could have had... “Ha! The thing is, I realised, the really brilliant drummers that I know spent their whole adolescence from when they were 12 to 18 playing five, six, seven hours a day and being completely dedicated to it. I like the idea of being in a band and mucking about but never put the graft in, so I was never good enough. The thing is though, sometimes you need to know your limits. I knew I wasn’t good enough, so I didn’t become a musician, basically.” But even if you’re not going to be the next Keith Moon, Murray says get down to an event on the 21st. Just expect to be given the as advice as all the other music teachers out there. “They all give the same advice,” he laughs, “which is practice. Which is always great to be told that you need to practice and you need to work harder! That’s the one thing you really want to hear! The thing is Learn To Play Day is about people learning for themselves, people having a go. Lots of people go through life regretting that they didn’t pick up an instrument or pursue an instrument, and we want to get kids into it. And drumming is a really good way to work out. You get to whack stuff. It’s brilliant.” National Learn to Play Day, Saturday March 21st, FREE Music Instrument lessons for ALL www.musicforall.org.uk/learntoplayday 51

n the wake of recent events at Garlands, my column this month is dedicated to one of it and Liverpool’s true clubland legends, the divine Tracy Wilder, aka DJ Silk Tray. A member of the original cast of Brookside in a former life, Tracy’s persona evolved as a way of escaping the unwanted public attention that comes with being in a major soap. DJing throughout the 80s and into the 90s strictly at private parties, ‘DJ Silk Tray’ hit the decks professionally twenty one years ago as a member of the original Garlands crew. Along with Dave & Huey, Marky J and Lady Seanne, Tracy was one of the key people who first put the now fabled venue on Liverpool’s clubland map. She was also a founding DJ at Janice Long’s Crash FM (now Juice FM). Wilder left Garlands in 2002 and moved to the brand new Superstar Boudoir when it first opened to work with her great friend, manager Mike Morgan.
52
As well as her DJ work, she still smashes it at Superstar Boudoir every weekend; Tracy is very much in touch with her dramatic roots. She is heavily involved as an actor, writer and director in her own productions, which you can see on the YouTube channel, Wildennis Productions. Her poignant tragi-comic
Lifestyle nightlife creation, ‘Tina Pickles - Miss Liverpool Echo 1985’ has received much praise and a fair amount of critical acclaim. We chatted over coffee during a filming break in her latest project, the irresistibly entitled ‘Housewives Of Benefit Street’. Tracy has always been something of an inspirational figure on the Liverpool club scene and among Liverpool’s creative and gay communities, not least because of her genuine personal warmth, humour and humility. However, since the tragic early death of her beloved friend Mike Morgan in 2013, she has become even more of an inspiration. In little over a year of daily exercise and healthy eating Tracy has shed an incredible eight and a half stone. ‘I was always ‘big’, but losing Mike made me want to start looking after myself a bit more and maybe help me to stay around for a bit longer. My new daily mantra is ‘Doing … doing … doing’. She confides with typical candour and self-deprecating understatement, and I’m certain that Mike could only approve. er lady seanne and tracy wild

Lewis Wright, Matchstickmen’s lead vocalist and main lyricist, spoke about how he was personally affected by cyberbullying: “The subject matter of ‘For No Reason’ is about someone close to me being bullied and not being able to escape it because of the rise of social media and cyber-bullying. We wanted to bring the issue to people’s attention because it seems so much harder

for kids now to when we were growing up.” He added “We are so pleased to be working with The Cybersmile Foundation as they are committed to helping everyone realise their true potential by supporting those that are bullied online. Each person that buys the new single joins them in helping prepare this and future generations for a safe and positive digital future.” Matchstickmen with their second album are undoubtedly about to leave an indelible mark on the musical landscape. Heavy accolade, yes, but deservedly so. Their sound gives the listener a grateful return to the classic rock genre. If you take the masterpieces from both the Foo Fighters and Metalica – then you have the essence and emotional tone of MatchstickMen. ‘For No Reason’ is the first single from the bands upcoming second album – ‘From Our Own Ashes. The lyrics to this track are beautifully written allusions to a very modern, but no less worthy cause. Lead singer Lewis Wright has a great voice which is perfect for this song and the bands musicality. All in all this is a great track, and memorable from the first listen – but don’t take my word for it – buy it yourself, support a worthy cause and enjoy. www.cybersmile.org Helpline: 0800 783 1113 @CybersmileHQ / @AskCybersmile

Lifestyle music should try to drink around 3 liters per day -about 13 cups.
LEMON'S BENEFITS
The intake of water is important to performers to maintain healthy vocal chords. While it's tempting to grab your favorite iced tea, latte or sports drink when looking for something to quench your thirst, they can have lots of added sugar and calories. A good alternative is drinking lemon water, which has zero calories and provides several WATER'S BENEFITS
54
Lemon water's primary ingredient is, of course, water. Flavoring your water with fresh lemon to make it more palatable can help its appeal, making you likely to reach for it more often. And drinking enough water is essential for optimal health. It's your body's main chemical component, making up roughly 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in the body depends on water to function properly. Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, delivers nutrients to cells and creates a moist environment for tissues in the ear, nose and throat. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration, a condition that happens when your body doesn't have sufficient water to carry out normal functions. Women should aim to drink about 2.2 liters of water per day -- about 9 cups, and men
Adding lemon to water is an easy way to get some of this fruit's nutritional benefits. Lemons are low in saturated fat and sodium and are also a good source of folate, potassium and vitamin C. Folate is a watersoluble B vitamin known to prevent neural tube defects during pregnancy; it also may prevent cognitive decline, cancer, certain psychiatric illnesses and cardiovascular conditions. Potassium builds protein and muscle, maintains normal body growth and controls the electrical activity of the heart. And lastly, vitamin C is needed for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of the body. As an antioxidant, it contains nutrients that block damage caused by free radicals, which may play a role in cancer, heart disease and arthritis.
CLEANSING PROPERTIES
Lemon water also plays a key role in cleansing your system. Water infused with lemon contains citric acid, which can clean out calcium stones and prevent calcium deposits from building up in arteries. These deposits can promote cardiovascular disease. lemon water can also provide the body with hydration, antioxidants and electrolytes.
A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE
Lemon water can serve as a tasty alternative to other, less healthy beverages. While calories in drinks aren't "hidden," you may not realise just how many calories drinks contribute to your daily intake. Compared to lemon water which has zero -- making it a great choice for when you want a flavorful drink but not all the added calories. Lifestyle no smoking day british heart foundation urges smokers to become quitters on no smoking day
T
he British Heart Foundation (BHF) is encouraging smokers in Liverpool to visit their local stop smoking services ahead of this year’s No Smoking Day on 11 March.
The charity’s latest figures show that around 23% of adults in Liverpool smoke – the national average is 18%. Studies have found that smokers are four times more likely to succeed in quitting with help from NHS stop smoking services than if they go it alone. Dr Mike Knapton, Associate Medical Director at the BHF, said: “Smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and a variety of cancers. The good news is that stopping smoking is the single best thing you can do for your heart health and the risk to your overall health decreases significantly soon after you stop.” “We’re encouraging smokers to visit their GP, pharmacist or local stop smoking advisor to resources, information, and advice on quitting smoking. Getting prepared for your quit attempt is the first step on the journey towards a smoke-free life.”
The BHF offers these top five tips to help you quit smoking: t
Make a date to give up - and stick to it! This year’s No Smoking Day is Wednesday 11 March.
t
Make a plan. Think about what could help you stop smoking, such as using a nicotine-replacement product, and have it ready before the date you plan to stop.
t
Get support and let your family and friends know that you're quitting. Some people find that talking to friends and relatives who have stopped can be helpful. You can also talk to local smoking cessation team.
t
Keep busy to help take your mind off cigarettes. Try to change your routine, and avoid the shop where you normally buy cigarettes.
t
Treat yourself. If you can, use the money you're saving by not smoking to buy yourself something special.

blues duo back safe hands
Lifestyle charity
Everton stars John Stones and Luke Garbutt took part in extra training recently when they called into the Everton Active Centre at Goodison Park to take part in a circuit session with a group of young men from Everton in the Community’s Safe Hands programme. The defensive duo spent their time in the gym helping the participants on different stations on their exercise circuit as they work on improving their fitness as they preparing for the Liverpool Half Marathon in June to raise funds for the club’s official charity. At the end of the gym session, Stones and Garbutt sat down with the young men to find out more about their lives, how the charity has helped them and offering their own fitness and nutrition advice. After his time meeting the participants, Stones said: “I always enjoy getting out into the community and finding out more about the programmes that Everton in the Community deliver. The lads we met today are a similar age to Luke and I and so it’s been great for us both to find out more about them and how Safe Hands has helped them. I always take a lot away from visits like this and hopefully these guys feel the same.”
58
Anthony Harden, Safe Hands Support Worker, added: “It was a great boost for the lads to meet John and Luke and have them take part in our session with them. They seemed to have a real interest in the work we are doing with Safe Hands and have given
the lads some good advice as they up their training for the Liverpool half marathon.” Launched in 2012 with funding from the Big Lottery Fund, Safe Hands is a five-year project that targets young offenders in the Merseyside area, aiming to help them integrate back into society after leaving secure care by offering them opportunities that they may never have considered as options before. The project works with young offenders prior to release with an individual support package introduced to help prepare them for the outside world. Once released, the participants undertake an extensive programme of activities to help integrate them back into society and build positive relationships with their communities. The project provides 20 hours or more per week of bespoke, themed workshops and accredited educated and training opportunities catering for participants’ individual needs and interests. Since its launch in April 2012, the programme has achieved an 80 percent non re-offending rate among participants, compared to the national average of 27 percent. The average persistent young offender costs the government £80,000 per year and £300,000 over their criminal career, the nonreoffending rate through Safe Hands would save the government £36million whilst creating economically active citizens.

FLUORESCENT BULB CHANGING IN THE DARK MATERIALS Spar bulbs
TOOLS
4v Screwdriver - preferably with a light on! • Step ladder • Small torch I’m sure we’ve all been caught out in the dark!! I mean when a bulb has gone! Having the right things at hand will always make the task easier, faster and of course safer! I’d always recommend to keep the three main items in a place that you would first think of when a light goes out. Normally where the consumer unit is. Many people have these in a cupboard under the stairs or in a hallway. The three items are - a small step ladder to enable you to reach your ceiling lights. A low vault, cordless drill preferably with a small neon light - these are usually designed for working in cupboards where there is poor visibility and light. If your drill doesn’t have a light on, a small torch. The first point of call for changing any bulbs is to turn of the main source of electric feed via the consumer unit. Set your ladder in position and using your cordless screw driver, remove the diffuser from the light fitting and remove the dead bulb. Replace the dead bulb with the new one placing the diffuser over the light fitting and rescrew your two screws in slowly using your cordless driver until it is firmly fixed into position. Turn your electrics back on by consumer unit and test the switch. Hopefully your light should work!

n the opening night of Disney World a journalist stood alongside Mrs Disney aghast at what he witnessed said to Mrs. Disney, "isn't it a shame that Walt isn't here to witness the opening" as he had passed away before the opening. Mrs. Disney turned to the journalist and said " it's because Walt saw it that your here to see it". Walt had the Vision to see things how they could be well before they had happened then created a plan to deliver that Vision. What do you see? What is your Vision for your future? Vision, is the ability to bring a positive future into the present. Maxi Jazz from the band Faithless wrote in one of his songs "You don't need eyes to see you need Vision". How do you see 2015, what positive achievements would you like to realise this year? What do you see for your health, wealth, learning, personal and professional development, career, family and travel. If you couldn't fail what would 2015 bring you? How would you want to BE, what would you want to DO and what would you want to HAVE? These are all questions to challenge your direction for 2015. Take some time to consider your answers to these questions. Write them down. We plan a 2 week holiday for months in advance of our trip. How long have you spent considering how you would like your future to look? Imagine if you spent the time
you spend planning your annual holiday thinking about how you would want the rest of your life to be. If we always do what we have done, we will always get what we have got! We will in our April edition look at HOW you create specific goals to bring your Vision closer to you and look at how you create a road map that guarantees you’re on the right track to deliver your vision. Vauxhall
Corsa VXR
T
he Corsa has come a long way since the iconic “papa” advert. Then the car was aimed at young female drivers. Now the VXR model, unveiled in Geneva in February is all about performance and style as Vauxhall throws its hat into the very competitive supermini ring. Developing 202bhp from its turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol motor, the Corsa VXR is able to cover the 0-60mph sprint in 6.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 143mph. In comparison, the Fiesta ST – the Corsa’s natural rival – takes 6.9 seconds to get to 62mph and runs out of puff at 137mph. Combined fuel economy and CO2 emissions for the Corsa are rated at 37.7mpg and 174g/km respectively. The ability to stay in control from a dynamic sports chassis set-up, the reassurance that comes from a range of serious safety features. All you need do, is point and shoot. 64
Whichever way you look at it, Corsa VXR doesn’t hang around. The lightweight 1.6 litre turbo puts out 192PS and the software controlled over boost increases maximum torque to 260+Nm for safer overtaking. No worries in the chassis department either. With lowered sports suspension, bigger brakes, switchable Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with traction control and ABS with straight line stability control and cornering brake control - it’s all designed for rapid, safe progress. The usual VXR style aka boy racer style is evident as the Corsa wears its performance bent loud and proud. A large roof spoiler? Check. Twin exhaust pipes, just to ensure all heads are turned as you come screaming up behind them – Double Check. But silliness aside, this new Corsa VXR, which is available this May, will surly pack a serious punch in the supermini ring.

Lifestyle the last word with amanda moss
MARCH
S
pring is in the air and I have a spring in my step. It’s an exciting month for me, starting with the Bierkeller Liverpool Lifestyle Awards and then the Lord Mayor’s charity fashion show on the 25th March which I have been asked to direct. What an honour and testament to the hard work done over the years. Being self employed is a hard slog. Forever questioning if you have made the right decision, always wondering when the next sale will come in and working seven days a week, my mind never switches off. But I am my own boss, I can go to the office in my PJs, I can take a 3 hour lunch if I want, I have the freedom to be with my kids everyday after school. This is so rewarding. Of course working for yourself brings 66 additional stresses so there is nothing
better than taking time out for some self indulgence. I recently have treated myself to a spa day and the benefits last far longer than just the day off work. I returned home rejuvenated and chilled out, my kids notice I am calmer and listen more. So I have now made a promise to myself to do this every month, to work it into my monthly regime. Read all about the benefits of holistic health in our feature this month. Of course a massage makes you feel good and smells divine. As the days get lighter my work load gets heavier but who’s complaining - I am working so hard so that one day my signature becomes my autograph. Stay stylish,
Amanda Moss
