Lifestyle editor's letter

october ISSUE 78 A note from our editor...

Hello lovely Lifestyle readers! Hello everybody, I write this with heartfelt relief, on what will be remembered in the future as a historical political day – Scotland voting No to leaving the U.K. While I understand and have sympathy for many of the arguments put forward by the Yes campaign, I believe in Aesop’s saying “United we stand, divided we fall.” So I raise my large tumbler of malted scotch to us staying a family of nations. I love every month – but October is one of my favourites. Finally I can take a break from applying fake tan to my legs – which even after all these years, I have never fully mastered - and wear my new knitted cream tights. And to top it all off, at the end of the month is the funnest night of all, Halloween. I am already scouting for costume ideas for my two year old twins. But before then I have so much to look forward to – The Childsplay Clothing Liverpool Fashion Week being a highlight. A few boozy and foodie nights out in the city are also in the planning, to celebrate various friends birthdays. All with my new trusty Independent Liverpool card in tow, to make the toll on my wallet a little lighter. Lots of love, 4

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

Kiesza Interview by Joy Lewis

Canadian singer and multiinstrumentalist, Kiesza has announced the release of her debut album, Sound Of A Woman out November 17th. She’s currently on tour in Australia, but I managed to have a quick chat with her about her new album and mega hit, Hideaway – which in a few short months, has propelled her into megastardom. We also chatted about her being a ballet dancer and sniper school.

10

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW Hi Kiesza, can I first ask have you always wanted to be a singer? No, I went through many changes growing However, I have always had a passion for music. I have read that you joined the Canadian Navy and became an expert sniper? But before that you were a very good ballet dancer? So what lead you to leave not one but two successful careers? Well, I had to give up ballet because of an injury. I joined the navy, because I love ships. I got the name “sniper” here, because I made an incredible shot. I left because the structure such a desire to constantly be creative. I hadn't discovered myself as a musician yet away I had found my calling. Has your music always been dance/ house music? No. I started as a folk musician and went arriving at my current sound. I was more focused on being a songwriter in the industry than an artist until I wrote Hideaway. I love Hideaway, and it is arguably one of the biggest songs of 2014. The YouTube hits alone for the video are nearly at 150 million.

just experimenting and doing it as another passionate side project to my writing career. I never expected it to do what it did and very grateful for all the support! About the video - which I love by the way. Was this all done in one take? How many times did you have to do it? Yes it was all in one take, and we managed to get it in the second take! I also read that you did the video with a broken rib? How on earth did you manage that? I didn't know it was broken at the time... honestly I have no idea how I did it. I just ignored it until after the shoot and then was bedridden for a month. Ouch. You have had a very busy summer performing at the festivals - what was that like? Which one was your favourite? Yes, they were all so much fun! I really loved Glastonbury! I've never seen so many people in one place and so much mud! What is the style of your debut album, "Sound of a Woman" and did you write all the songs yourself? I wrote the album with Rami Samir Afuni and a couple songs with some other close friends who are writers that I love to work with. I am a strong believer in collaboration. I think and strengths in us.

You must have known you had created an amazing song - but has this surpassed expectations?

Are you taking the "Sound of a Woman" on tour? And if so, are you coming to Liverpool?

now, which is mind blowing to me! I had no expectations for the song or video. I was

be touring with the album!

St John Bosco Arts College

opens its £18 million new school building St John Bosco Arts College, based in Croxteth to students and teachers after completing the first phase of its large £18 million school build. The new building is not rigid in design, allowing maximum use and flexibility in the way the school teaches lessons. The school is based around a central heart space which offers students study booths with flat screen technology and a learning resource centre. Other facilities in the new state of the art building include two double height dance studios, drama studios, a fitness suite, as well as 3D immersive learning environments and super-sized science laboratories. The second phase will complete the landscaping of the sports pitches, which are a key part of the new school and will include a full size 3G all-weather, floodlit pitch. Headteacher Anne Pontifex says the plan is to open as many of the school’s facilities to the community as possible. The new school building marks an impressive few years for the school, who were identified as an ‘outstanding school’ by Ofsted in 2013, as well as being named a coveted

‘teaching school’, the first secondary school in Liverpool to achieve this status. The school have had an equally impressive year in 2014, with A-level exam results increasing and 24 subjects receiving a 100% pass rate. This follows a great GCSE results day, where 66% of their pupils secured A*-C grades (including maths and English).

cat app

Cats Protection

launches new app to get cat lovers building their own cat centre and caring for their feline occupants.

T

he app is a simple and fun game that gives people an insight into life at a cat homing centre.

Charity Cats Protection has launched Cat Match, a free app that gives cat lovers the chance to run a simulated Cats Protection Homing Centre, doing all they can to look after and rehome the cats in their care. The game involves players caring for a number of cats, assisted by a virtual vet. Featuring a mixture of Match-3 puzzle mechanics and lite Sim Management, Cat Match gives a fun take on running a real cat homing centre. All profits from in-app purchases go directly to help Cat Protection. Cat Match players buy additional blocks and rooms with virtual funds to improve and expand their homing centre, allowing for more cats to be cared for and prepare cats for rehoming by taking care of their needs in the Match-3 game. By matching three icons in a row, essential items can be gained for the cats including food, bedding and medicine. 26

Rasoul Hudda, Cats Protection’s Creative Designer said: “The app is a simple and fun game that gives people an insight into life at a cat homing centre. It is not as easy as it looks, as players will soon discover. We hope cat lovers will find it of interest and encourage them to adopt one of the many thousands of unwanted cats in Cats Protection’s care.” The app, which is sponsored by Feliway, is suitable for all ages and will be available on iOS and Android. It can be downloaded from UK iTunes, UK Apple store, Google Play store, or via www.cats.org.uk/catmatch.

Every year thousands of people put their faith and trust in Cats Protection when looking for a new addition to the family. Behind each volunteer and member of staff is a wealth of experience and expertise which means when you adopt one of our cats, you can feel safe in the knowledge that he has been given the best possible care.

We also provide four weeks’ free insurance (terms and conditions apply) giving invaluable peace of mind and reassurance as you and your cat embark upon this lifelong friendship. All he needs now is a loving home to make his dreams come true – over to you!

Steampunk Fashion

Lifestyle fashion

S

teampunk is the next biggest trend, that you have probably never heard of. But that is changing, Steampunk fashion has been tipped to be the next big thing, and it already is the “new” alternative. So it’s probably time to get the look sorted. It has actually been around for a while, but more and more elements of it are hitting the high street – from teenagers wearing brass flying goggles around their neck, to ladies donning fitted Victorian overcoats.

So what the hell is steampunk? The term itself comes from science fiction from novels - think of the Victorian literature genius of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. It's all about mixing old and new: brass and copper, wood, glass, unconcealed mechanical workings and steam-powered hydraulics. Or as US young fiction author Caitlin Kittredge put it: "It's sort of Victorian-industrial, but with more whimsy and fewer orphans...". The look, when it comes to street fashion, typically adds the 'best' looks of the Victorian era - explorers, soldiers, countesses, lords and ladies - to today's most relevant street styles: goth, burlesque, the lace and leather of pirates, and the frills and capes of vampires. If you’re afraid that your outfit is “too Victorian,” then you’re probably doing it right. This, of course, just scratches the surface as to what steampunk is and the 32

unique art and creativity that can be expressed with this genre. What I personally like best about it, other than the look being really cool, is that its origins and ethos comes from some of the best literature ever penned. And maybe, if this look does become as mainstream as predicted, people will once again be spellbound by Journey to the Centre of the Earth or War Of the Worlds, now that really would be cool. As creative director for hair & makeup this year I've been busy working with the designers and my fabulous team to create mood boards for each night, design the hair & makeup looks around each night's 'theme' and ensure that 6 designers each night are happy with the finished looks to reflect their styles perfectly. It's one thing when we have one designer and one required look for a show - the team can be prepped and away you go, but the pressure is on when you want to create a bit of diversity whilst keeping a variety of different designers happy, talk about a challenge! But you know me, I like to shake things up a bit and get creative, creating a range of different looks each night based around a common theme. Lots of pressure but I'm sure you'll agree well worth it! Check out some of the backstage chaos and runway magic from my time in London, with 38

My verdict – 4/5

Lifestyle ALBUM REVIEW

Aphex Twin Syro Review by Joy Lewis

It’s been 13 years since Aphex Twin’s last “new” album, Drukqs. Not that you would notice, Syro makes no concessions to 2014 music what so ever. This album unapologetically houses the same collection of sounds and techniques that has remained largely unchanged in over a decade. It has been a while, but thank your deity that Richard D James is back, because dance music has been missing a type of ambient sound that only Aphex Twin can deliver. There is a certain type of genius that can develop and produce an impressively timeless album such as this. To a new listener the sound will be fresh, but to one such as myself, who has grown up listening to electronic music, this was a perfect recreation of the raw break beats that Drukqs delivered 13 years ago. I can guarantee, no matter how many times I listen to this album, I will never get bored of it. Due to advancing technology people tend to listen and buy only a few tracks from albums, however I recommend that Syro is listened to as a whole. The tracks are mostly psychedelic hippy rave in style, and sometimes jolting and a little weird, which is quintessentially Richard James in his Aphex Twin guise. Just when you think you are getting a handle on things about turn, where piano chords are played placed on the down beat ragtime style, complete with birdsong and hanging silences. So close your eyes and let Aphex Twin’s Syro of drum and bass and glow sticks. 44

kingdom launches sunday soul Sunday Soul, a classic soul, Motown and disco night headlined by The Andy Williams Band, launched on Sunday 21st September at Kingdom. Kingdom now plays host to a collection of the Northwest's finest musicians every Sunday. The Andy Williams Band offers a touch of authentic soul that has the dance floor filled from when the doors open at 7pm. The band has toured with some of the most respected names in soul, including Errol Brown of HotChocolate, The Brand New Heavies and Ruby Turner. Now they bring a repertoire that includes ‘All Night Long’, ‘Carwash’, ‘Young Hearts Run Free’, ‘September’ and ‘Never Too Much’ to Kingdom.

Two bottled beers – Seafarer and Pier 59 - are available in a growing number of hotels, bars and restaurants throughout the city, including The Hilton, The Liner Hotel and, of course, The White Star pub. Sales director of Oceanic, Gareth Hogg, said: “The trademark of The White Star Line is an iconic image, recognised all over the world but of particular significance here in Liverpool. These beers commemorate an important piece of local history and the story behind the name of the beer is printed on each bottle as a tribute. The beers themselves are brewed locally using traditional methods for the best quality and flavour.”

Dipna Anand Interview by Joy Lewis

National Curry week is in its 17th year and is a week that promotes Britan’s favourite cuisine to raise funds for charities concentrating on hunger, malnourishment and poverty. During the week, curry lovers can get out and visit their local curry houses, some of which will be staging special events and fun challenges, or they can dine in and celebrate the cuisine and culture in the comfort of their own home. This national celebration is looking to financially contribute to the alleviation of poverty and suffering in South Asia and worldwide particularly Water Projects - with 1.4 million children dying from water-related diseases every year, and the Find Your Feet Charity helping families build a future free from poverty as well as Action Against Hunger... 48

Having been born and brought up in a family of restaurateurs and chefs, it’s fair to say I have cooking in my blood. Our restaurant in Southall, called The Brilliant which has been open for 40 years has a strong reputation and Brilliant is now a brand which is recognized internationally, especially after we were voted as one of Ramsay’s Best Restaurant for his Channel 4 series. The restaurant specializes in Punjabi cooking with a Kenyan slant. Most of the recipes on the menu date back to 1950 and were created by my grandfather when the first Brilliant Restaurant opened 50

However when I won the ‘Personality of the year award’ for inspiration at The British Curry Awards in 2013 that actually gave me a boost and I wanted to break the boundaries and that’s when I decided it’s time to get to work on my first cook-book. National Curry Week is extra special and during National Curry Week I always ensure I not only make more curry than usual but I also experiment new recipes. For National Curry Week we often take part in competitions such as the 'samosa speed challenge' or challenges in house for example 'how many naan breads can you put into the clay oven in the shortest time'. National Curry Week is a great excuse not only to eat lots of curry but also carry out some curry related challenges, real good fun.

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

andrea bocelli

Andrea Bocelli, the world’s premier classical music star, returns to The Echo Arena on 18 November, with a show featuring the repertoire that has made him famous throughout the world, as a unique artist able to cross boundaries between classical and pop. The biggest selling solo classical artist of all time, Bocelli has performed for four U.S. presidents, two popes and the royal family, as well as at ceremonies for the Olympic Games and the World Cup. AFTER MORE THAN 20 YEARS PERFORMING MUSIC ALL OVER THE WORLD, YOU ARE ABOUT TO EMBARK ON YOUR LATEST TOUR, WHAT IT IS THAT KEEPS YOU GOING?

I must say: passion; a boundless love I have always harboured for music and singing, which, over time, has been combined with the love for my audience. IS IT DIFFICULT TO RUN ALMOST TWO PARALLEL SINGING CAREERS, OF POP AND CLASSICAL?

Nothing is easy in this world. As a foundation, you must have great passion. With passion

passion helps you to think that impossible is in fact possible.

IN YOUR LATEST TOUR - WHICH IS COMING TO LIVERPOOL ECHO ARENA THIS NOVEMBER, WHAT CAN AUDIENCES EXPECT? ARE YOU PERFORMING OLD AND NEW MATERIAL?

My concert repertoire is always one that distinguishes the Italian tenor, so I will be singing some of the most beautiful arias and duets from Italian and French operas. I will

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW also perform some pieces from my albums of popular music. AS YOU ARE ALSO FAMOUS FOR DUETTING WITH OTHER GREAT SINGERS - CAN YOU REVEAL WHO WILL BE JOINING YOU ON STAGE IN LIVERPOOL?

For now, I can reveal that soprano Maria Aleida and guitar duo CARisMA will perform on stage with me, great artists who often accompany me on tour around the world. But this tour will also be the occasion for a new collaboration with violinist Lindsey Stirling, a rising star on the international music scene. And we’ll reveal more soon….. YOU HAVE MENTIONED IN THE PAST THAT YOU SUFFER TERRIBLY FROM NERVES BEFORE YOUR STAGE PERFORMANCES, DO YOU STILL SUFFER AS BADLY?

Some things don’t change with the passing of time. The tension I feel comes from the great respect I pay to music and to my audience, who comes to hear me perform, want to and I have to give the best of me. It’s not easy, hence the tension, which in England you call stage fright. DO YOU COME FROM A MUSICAL FAMILY?

54

Absolutely not. My parents used to sell farm machinery and I would even say that my father could not sing in tune, despite a very strong voice that thundered every time I was called to order. Some of my mothers’ family however loved music very much, and were singers on a nonprofessional level.

WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER THAT YOU HAVE SUCH AN EXTRAORDINARY VOICE?

It’s not for me to say there’s anything extraordinary in my voice, provided there’s anything at all that can be I’ve always been asked to sing. They used to ask me at school when I was a small boy; I was asked to sing at Church on Sunday, at home by my family, at friends’ parties, everywhere, and so I soon understood that signing would be my destiny.

Lovely Lighting for Kitchens, Bedrooms & Home Offices

Lighting can affect the look, feel and mood of a home – as well as being highly functional.

In the bedroom…

Forget the bog standard table lamp integrated lighting solutions create dramatic design effects and a warm and cosy atmosphere in the bedroom – perfect when settling in for an early night during the frosty winter months. Headboard and LED Strip Lighting Headboard lighting is a hot trend for 2014 – it’s romantic and enhances the bed as a centre-piece of the room. Headboard lighting can be custom designed as part of a fitted bedroom to suit your exact size and style requirements using LED spots or strip lighting. Flexible strip lighting can also be applied to wardrobes and fitted furniture to provide a fabulous bedroom design feature.

56

Lifestyle

home

Top five lighting tips: 1. Lighting has aesthetic benefits but don’t forget that it can be functional too – illuminate task areas in the kitchen and home study. Always consider the natural 2. light within a room and decide where best to add artificial light. 3. In the bedroom choose mood lighting that glows and enhances relaxation. 4. Think about energy – ES bulbs are an environmentally friendly option as are LED lights. 5. Accent lighting isn’t functional, but can add drama to a bedroom or kitchen - illuminate key design areas using plinth lights in alcoves and at floor level.

CRAIG

PHILLIP’S

DIY... Hello Lifestyle Readers! It’s been an exciting month for me as I have finally finished work on my cottage in Newport. When I’m not doing TV and media work, I jump straight into my properties and it’s extremely satisfying to finally get this one finished! As ambassador of Checkatrade, I was delighted to attend a special event at the Redwood Park School in Portsmouth to present a cheque to the lucky winner of the Checkatrade Foundation’s ‘Big Build’ fundraising raffle. Members paid to enter a draw for either £10,000 or a new company vehicle, with the money being won by Just Wood Flooring owner Alastair Smyth. In a fantastic act of generosity, Alastair donated £5,000 back through Gift Aid which we are delighted about and his money will certainly make a huge difference to the foundation! The Checkatrade team have spent over a year raising funds to support the school for children with special needs by replacing very inadequate sports changing facilities with a modern up to date building with heating, showers and toilets. Sport can be an important therapy for children with special needs and the Checkatrade team have taken part in a number of fundraising activities including quiz nights, cake sales, a CAT Sports Day, Ice Bucket Challenges, Jailbreak Day, London Nightrider, and, not forgetting, 12 marathons! I also attended another Toolfair event at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on behalf of Swedish workwear manufacturer Blåkläder. As the weather changes and battling the elements becomes more of an issue for people who work outdoors, Blåkläder offer a range of clothing and equipment that offer warmth and protection. Until next time… All the best,

fitting a curtain pole Materials: • Curtain pole and brackets • 8mm plugs and screws • Curtains Tools: • 18V hammer action cordless drill and 8mm masonry drill bit • 4V screwdriver • Spirit level • Pencil

When planning to purchase a curtain pole, ensure you’ve measured the window or door opening you want the curtain to cover, then add at least 12 inches to the get the correct length pole. Mark the wall where you want the pole and brackets to be fitted. Top Tip: Always ensure you leave at least 6 inches of curtain pole either side of the window or door edge. Drill your holes using an 18v hammer action drill and 8mm masonry drill bit. Push in a brown 8mm wall plug into the hole you’ve just drilled and use a cordless screwdriver to drive in screws and secure the brackets to the wall. Once your first bracket is firmly fixed into place, use a spirit level to transfer the level across the opening to enable you to get the second bracket completely level. Slide your curtains over the pole and hook the pole and curtains into position and don’t forget to measure the window before purchasing your curtain.

Mersey River Festival delivers economic boost An independent analysis of the International Mersey River Festival shows it attracted 200,000 visitors – many from across the UK - and generated almost £7 million for the Liverpool economy.

T

he three day event, which took place from 13 – 15 June 2014, brought the city’s waterfront to life with a series of nautical events involving Tall Ships and Dutch barges as well as canoe pole and a raft race. It also featured Music on the Waterfront concerts at the Pier Head with performances from The Christians, Rhydian, Jaki Graham, Esco Williams and a DJ set from BBC 6 Music’s Craig Charles. A study conducted by The Murray Consultancy has revealed that visitors from outside Liverpool City Region spent just under £4 million - around £80 per person, with local residents spending a total of £3 million. One in every four visitors had travelled from elsewhere - mainly London, Newcastle, Yorkshire and North Wales.

One in three were staying overnight, with the average break lasting four nights. Mayor Anderson added: “This year’s River Festival was the most successful ever and a small investment by companies gives a massive return to help us further develop our events.” “It is brilliant that so many organisations have signed up so far and it shows that there is a real appetite from external organisations to support our events programmes. They recognise that as 60

Lifestyle BUSINESS a city we excel at staging outdoor events, and as a result hundreds of thousands of people come and spend time and money in Liverpool. and, equally as important, generates a feelgood factor in the city.”

North West workers have high standards regarding what colleagues wear to work

N

ew research shows workers in the North West expect their co-workers to dress smartly for work, disapproving of items of clothing including ripped jeans, shorts and dirty shoes. The research, commissioned by the Business is GREAT campaign, showed that 46 per of North West workers think shorts or above the knee skirts are unacceptable compared to 40 per cent nationally. When asked which business leader was best dressed Lord Alan Sugar came top of the list followed by Richard Branson, Kelly Hoppen, and Peter Jones. It seems Britain is a nation of traditionalists with over two thirds of workers (75 per cent) wearing a suit, uniform or smart-casual attire to work with only one in ten of us feeling comfortable enough to wear what we feel like to work.

Lewin, expert Jermyn Street shirtmaker, said, “The results of this research show we want our work clothes to demonstrate our work ethic. 32 per cent of those surveyed said they ‘dressed to impress’, choosing their business wardrobe nature.”

ew Volkswagen Golf Match replaces Golf SE, adding new alloy wheels and a heap of extra convenience kit at no extra cost

VW has killed off the mid-range Golf SE and replaced it with the Golf Match, they’ve added a few extra toys to the specification at no extra cost. That means that customers will be getting behind the wheel of the Golf Match 1.4-litre TSI 122 PS BlueMotion Technology six-speed manual three-door model this October from £19,680. The price tag isn’t pocket change, but for this type of motor, in this category, the starting price is actually quite good. Although the insurance bracket is bound to be as high as the sky.

My point, is that while social media can be a great way to stay in touch with friends, sometimes it can be negative. So while I love social media, I am also aware that sometimes it’s not a truthful reflection of life. And there are different ways of keeping in touch with friends and family, like picking up the phone, because true friendships last longer than the click of a Facebook button.
