Hello Lovely Lifestyle readers few weeks ago my broadband went down for over 24 hours, the electronic silence that ensued was…..refreshing. I am now living proof that there is life outside of the Matrix. For nearly 10 years I have been “plugged in.” Very rarely am I without some sort of device that gives me access to the internet – email, facebook, what’s app, twitter and Kindle are my favourites, and these I am always checking, not only for work but chatting to my friends and reading books electronically. On the evening the internet went down, extreme panic ensued. Largely because I was working, and I rely on the internet to send and receive copy. But with a few text messages and phone calls, work could go on without me, for a short while at least. The next morning I was on the train, my internet was still off. Unable to read or check emails, for the first time in years I looked up, there wasn’t a single other passenger on the train who wasn’t looking down at their phones or tablet computers. Not one. Later on I went for a run – without my ability to access my music on the cloud, I ran in silence. It was without a doubt the best run I have ever had, I was faster, I ran for longer and my mind was much clearer and relaxed by the time I got home. In short, because I was “unplugged” for 24 hours, I rejoined the human race. It was lovely. So refreshing this change, from now on I will run in silence, I will look up from my kindle on the train and look out of the window and enjoy the world around me more often. How much do we all miss by looking at our screens all the time? Next time you are on the train, you might see me, I’ll be the one person looking out of the window, be sure to say hello and enjoy the scenery with me.

Cinderella is the Epstein Theatre’s pantomime for this Chirstmas. Prince Charming is played by Calum Best the son of football legend George Best and is guaranteed to get hearts racing across the region in his role as the dashing Prince Charming. The cast also includes Grease Is the Word’s Alison Crawford, Lesley Butler as the Wicked Stepmother and Michael Chapman and Tom Burroughs as the hilarious Ugly Sisters. Lewis Pryor stars as Buttons and Chris Barton plays Prince Charming’s right hand man, Dandini. Meanwhile, Beryl Marsden, the godmother of 60s soul, who was one of the greatest female vocalists of the Merseybeat era and toured with The Beatles, will also be starring in panto Our editor Joy Lewis had a quick chat with Calum before rehearsals began. How does it feel to be starring in Panto for the first time? I won’t lie, I’m nervous, really nervous. I was brought up mostly in the states, and we don’t have panto over there. But this is such an amazing opportunity for me that I jumped at the chance to take part. But nobody told me I had to sing. I just found that out. So yea I’m going to have singing lessons too because I don’t want to let anyone down. The rest of the cast are amazing I can’t wait to start rehearsals with everybody.

What do you think about performing at the beautiful Epstein? I love this theatre. To perform at such a famous venue, and with this cast, is thrilling. It’s small enough for the audience to really feel a part of the performance. And the history behind it and the beauty of this place is amazing. But it all adds up to add to my nerves. I am really looking forward to it though.

It’s been a really big year for you and your face seems to be everywhere at the moment. Good you noticed. That’s the plan, I am grabbing every opportunity that comes along to me. From the start of the year and coming 3rd in Celebrity Big Brother to opening my own gym with my mother in London, to being the Burton’s main male model to having a part in an indie film about angels, it’s been go go go. And now to be playing Prince Charming here at the Epstein, a year ago I wouldn’t have believed it. I feel so lucky. I’ve been busy and working hard, and that’s the plan for now and the future. Not content with wreaking havoc in Corrie, actor Marc is set to cause mayhem as the dastardly Dandini – so get ready to boo and hiss! Illustrator Katherine Caldwell illustrates the things that she likes to see on a day out; donkeys, dandelions, daisies, long grasses, birds and much more. She enjoys creating work that reflects what is happening in my Liverpool home and all her illustrations are created by hand with inks and then featured on cards, prints, t-shirts and sleep-suits. Supported by headline sponsor Bibby Maritime and associate sponsor McLintocks, the annual awards recognise the footballing achievements of players from 10 of the charity’s disability teams that play across Merseyside. The Costa Rican international opened the proceedings and awarded trophies for Players’ Player of the Year and Manager’s Player of the Year to players from Everton in the Community’s world renowned disability programme. Blues Ambassadors Graham Stuart and Ian Snodin then took their places on stage to present medals of achievement to each participant from teams in attendance before Disability Manager Steve Johnson delivered the closing remarks to congratulate all players and thank their friends and family for their continued support before presenting trophies of thanks to Bibby Maritime and McLintocks. 30

LISA RILEY Lisa Riley, star of the small screen and ex Strictly Come Dancing contestant, got fed up with

a clothing line to put her name to, she decided to take the bull by the horns and create her own fashion label, to celebrate curves and hand high

What gave you the idea to launch your own fashion line? The idea arouse after strictly really for me, as I was approached by loads of high street shops not only to wear all their clothing, but they also asked me to be their in store "style guru" which was really flattering. On social media I was forever being asked where my clothes were from, and also what ideas I had for new seasons. It was all these things together that gave me the idea to start my own range. The range had to be 100% ME, not like what a lot of celebrities do, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just want to put my name to something and take the money. I wanted full overall approval of all the designs, the fabrics and which styles suit certain sizes. You can't just make garments that are larger as those shapes don't look right on bigger girls. Who and what type of female are your designs aimed at? I say that my clothes are for everyone. We are starting at 14-28, but if anyone is larger, like we had a girl the other day who is size 32, we were able to make the garments no problem, that is the beauty of keeping my brand in England and being made here. One thing I have always struggled with is getting outfits for weddings, christenings and bar-mitzvahs and such like. I always had to order online from America to get some special pieces, so for me I wanted to make this more accessible for everyone, which I feel I have done. Your debut collection was really well received at the Curve in Manchester - how did that feel? Were you nervous before hand? I was blown away by the response I got at the Curve Festival in Manchester, I certainly wanted

my first official clothing launch in my home town of Manchester so it seemed perfect. I was nervous, worried about how people would react to my ideas and designs, but my fears were quashed very quickly after ten minutes, everyone was trying the clothes on and having selfies, in my dresses! But mainly, and more importantly, they could see the garments up close and feel the real quality in the fabrics and the tailoring. My line isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just mass market clothes churned out for one season, I have tried hard to make my collection non-seasonal, except for the three winter coats, which are available. Are you in shops or online or both? My range at the moment is available on line on my purchasing page www.justbeyouclothing.co.uk and later in the year I hope to be supplying independent boutiques as well, and if I close my eyes and dream of my true goal, I would love to have my own shop. Where I could do one on one sessions with my customers about style and fashion, which I am obsessed with. Let's pray one day my dream comes true. Most people will know you from TV, Strictly Come Dancing and Emmerdale, have you left the small screen for good now? Or will we be seeing you in the future? Yes everyone will know me best for the likes of Emmerdale, You've Been Framed, Waterloo Road, Calendar Girls and of course who could forget Strictly, and yes I do plan to return to TV, Film and theatre as that's my living, but to be honest as I approach 49 next July and realising I have been in the business now for 29 years nonstop, I want to concentrate on doing the work I adore and obviously fashion and my clothing range is one of them, traveling the world is where I am my happiest learning new things every single day....so it's nice to be in position to be doing work I truly adore. I will be doing pantomime this Christmas at the Bradford Alhambra theatre and then touring the country in 2016 August-November in a brand new comedy play that has been written for me by the very talented Dave Simpson, and of course that play will be coming to Manchester and Liverpool.

Behind the scenes at Liverpool Fashion Week with Painted Lady Makeup.... Hi Danielle, what was involved in your role as Head Makeup Artist? Being Head Makeup Artist at Liverpool Fashion Week meant I had to recruit a team of makeup artists and design all the looks for each show. I was really happy with the makeups and they looked great on the catwalk and pictures. The backstage vibe was electric and we all worked really hard and loved it. What were the looks you created at the shows and where did you get your inspiration? The looks were taken from Autumn/Winter 2015 makeup trends. On our opening night we had red glossy lips and winged liner seen at the D&G and Marchesa catwalks. The second look, which was a quick lip change between shows was to change to gothic 90's lips with vampire shades of mulberry and almost black shades. The second night we went for full black smoky eyes paired with nude lips. My top tip for the perfect smoky eye is to blend until you can’t blend any more to give an intense soft look. The quick change half way through the night was adding metallic golds to the eyes, cheeks and lips. This is a big Autumn/Winter 2015 trend. These tones look amazing with sun kissed skin, strong strobing & highlighting. I love Illamasqua’s 36 liquid metal in gold for this look.

GET THE LI V E R P O O L LO O K The finale night finished on bridal so the makeups were all about flawless skin, natural tones, peaches and browns on the eyes, nude lips and making the models look like bridal beauties. In the darker months of the year our hair follicles go into a resting period, and we lose more hair than we would do during the longer sunnier days. But all is not lost, luscious locks can be had during autumn and winter with a few healthy eating tips.

Selenium

Selenium helps to keep your hair nourished, but what foods are high in this? ‘Brazil nuts and wheat germ are a great source of selenium. Other foods rich in selenium are whole grains (barley, wheat, rye, buckwheat, oats and brown rice), fish, seafood and lean meats, sunflower seeds and other nuts such as pecans and almonds.

Zinc

If you have low zinc levels in your system this can lead to the deterioration of the protein structure that makes up the hair follicle. This weakening of follicles can in turn cause hair shedding and hair loss. Oysters, pumpkin seeds, ginger root, pecans, Brazil nuts, oats, almonds, turnips and garlic are all great sources of Zinc, and are another great way in keeping your hair in tip-top condition.

his fabulous restaurant stands on the site of the victorian public toilets just off Aigburth Road in South Liverpool and is therefore small but perfectly compact. On entering, I was greeted with a smile from owner Mary and chef Graeme cooking from the open grill in the background. The seriously delicious wafts of sizzling steak on the grill, made my mouth water as we were led to our table in the corner. From every seat there are views of the kitchen and open grill, so you can see your food being freshly prepared an cooked in the impeccably clean kitchen. The restaurant is decorated as a Texan ranch, with wooden tables and walls,and chunky slates as mats. With a wall to ceiling glass window on one side, the place is filled with natural light. It proved a very relaxing setting, and was filled with ladies who lunch with their babies. The menu is very heavily meat based, obviously, and with me planning a steak for a main course I did not want to fill myself up with a starter, though I was drawn to the chicken and chorizo skewers. Other traditional options included, garlic mushrooms, galic bread and oven baked nachos. 42There are also sharing platters of BBQ ribs, corn

For mains I was set on a sirloin steak, my favourite meal in the world, but at the last minute opted to try The Churrassco Giant Dirty Burger, with a side order of skinny fries. There was nothing skinny about this choice with 5 beef burgers, a chicken burger, lashes of thick bacon, pulled brisket in a bbq sauce, montgomery cheese and stacked onion rings. Yes it was yummy but it was ridiculously indulgent. I picked at it to taste it and although I had been starving when I entered the restaurant, I was soon full up and took it home where my kids polished it off for their dinner. Simon had the Steak Stone Experience, a 10oz slab of raw meat served on a hot plate is pre-heated in a special steak stone oven to reach 350 degree temperature ready to be served to you, with a peppercorn sauce. He then sliced the meat and laid it on the sizzling plate and it cooked to his specification. This was an ingenious way to serve steak, as more often than not I always have to return it to be seared a little longer for my taste. With both of us suitably stuffed by the end of the main course, a dessert was out of the question, but I have made a mental note of the home made sticky toffee pudding for future reference. Overall I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pick any fault with the food or the service, perhaps it is because I am an untamed carnivore at heart and this menu pampered to my desires.

Frankie and Benny's Food Review by Neil Woods rankie is in fact Frankie Giuliani, he was aged just 10-years-old when, with ‘Mamma and Poppa’, he left Sicily and landed at New York in 1924. Poppa was an ambitious chap and within a year had opened a restaurant in the city’s Little Italy area – .Mamma's home cooking, was the base from which the business prospered When Frankie was at high school he became chums with third generation American,Benny. When, in 1953, Poppa retired, the pair took over the business. The idea was to combine the best of popular American food with traditional Italian dishes. Atmosphere - 8/10. We found it to be very welcoming and relaxing. Entertainment - 7/10. They have background music of American classics It’s a good place to bring children, it’s a warm friendly eaterie, and very busy. They also have bathroom audio that was teaching Italian. Choice on menu - 8/10. A wide and varied menu, with choices from burgers to salads, ribs to pizza. Taste - 8/10. Excellent, my absolute favourite thing was the BBQ Rack of ribs ,this was so mouth wateringly good, which I will be ordering again next time I visit. There is a special children’s menu that includes a dessert and unlimited soft drinks. Service - 8/10. Superb, every member of staff was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu often pointing to their favourites. All the staff came out to sing happy birthday to a young girl celebrating her birthday, the whole restaurant joined in, which made the atmosphere all the more relaxed and friendly. 44

Table location - 9/10. There is a great ambience in the restaurant, and the table and seating are all equally private while being able to view the chefs in action. Being able to see the kitchen and all the hustle and bustle in there is yet another pleasing feature of Frankie & Benny’s. Would we go there again? Yes, infact we have eaten there since the review. There was such a varied mix of ages, from old couples, students and families etc. Dining in the restaurant when we visited, which shows that Frankie and Benny’s is a popular choice with all ages.

t’s November, which means BBQs have become bonfires, so it’s time to wrap up warm, put on a pair of woolly gloves and get the sparklers at the ready. Guy Fawkes Night is upon us, and you can’t beat the fireworks display in Sefton Park. Our advice is to get there early and head to one of the many restaurants on Lark Lane for dinner – you’re spoilt for choice! Now, you can’t ignore it - Christmas is on the way! The city centre will be lit up any day now, the organised ones amongst us will be buying all of the Christmas presents ahead of Black Friday, and that annoying neighbour will probably have already mounted a giant flashing reindeer on their roof once again. But if you’re not quite ready for mince pies and pantos, then something that is sure to get you in the mood is Shrek the Musical. On at the Liverpool Empire (direct from the West End) from the 25th to the 29th of November, Shrek the Musical brings to life the award-winning DreamWorks animation film, in an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza. The whole family will laugh and sing along as Shrek and Donkey go on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona from a lovesick dragon. Throw Lord Farquaad and a gang of fairytale misfits into the mix, and you’ve got the funniest musical comedy in town!

By now you’ll have realised we’re all about the music, and although festival season is officially over, November does not disappoint in the way of gigs! The Hummingbirds are arguably one of the most recognised names in the Liverpool Music Scene, but for those of you who haven’t heard of them, they are a 5-piece folk/rock band who brilliantly capture that unique Liverpool sound.

The release of their self-titled debut album is imminent, but for a taster, check out and their debut single ‘Knocking On My Door’, and their latest single ‘Out Of The Rain’. The Hummingbirds are a band that need to be seen live, and you don’t have a long wait because they play their, now annual, headline gig at the O2 Academy on Saturday 28th November. We can’t wait! Without a doubt, one of our favourite musicians is Stephen Langstaff. The combination of brilliant song-writing and incredible guitar skills, topped off with his signature spellbinding vocals makes Stephen Langstaff a Liverpool gem to be treasured. The title track to his current E.P. ‘Sirens’ is the last single which he released and it’s epic! We’re also big fans of ‘Call Me’ which you can listen to on his Soundcloud, or even better hear it live! He’s playing Leaf on Bold Street on Friday 13th November with support from folk-pop singer/songwriter Ali Ingle (who we like to think of as a scouse Ben Howard). The date is already in our diaries. Hello, your current tour is getting some rave reviews – how’s it going? The current Zombies U.S. Tour has been sensational. Theatres have been sold out all over the country and reactions have been unbelievable. Marshal Mathers on his album in 2013 heavily sampled you in his track Rhyme or Reason - did this introduce you to a new audience? It's always very exciting to realise that music you have been involved in creating has influenced other musicians. In sampling "Time Of The Season" Eminem has not only reinvigorated our faith in our musical past but has definitely introduced us to a whole new audience! What does it mean to you to be performing in Liverpool? Liverpool played such a special part in forming the musical identity of The Zombies. So much musical history permeates from the streets of Liverpool that you cannot help but be freshly inspired in every Liverpool performance.

How's the tour going? We don't start until November 6th, in Wolves, but we're deep into rehearsals and the spirit is high. We've got so many songs to chose from now stretching right back to my Pele days so we try and make sure everything is covered in the set. The final show is this Christmas in the Arts Club Liverpool, what made you want to come back and finish it there? We did two unbelievable shows in the Arts Club last year, people who've been watching me for 25 years were saying they were right up there with the best they'd seen us. From a fans point of view it's a brilliant place to watch a band, where ever you stand it's a great vibe. Also we will be playing as a 12 piece with a full horn section and the Arts Club stage allows us to do that. What can the fans expect from your show this year? One of the many things I've learned from watching Springsteen is that a show can have everything in it. We live in divided political times so there will be an aspect of rabble rousing, many of us have suffered broken hearts so that's in there too, there will be fun, stories, a big singalong and of course you still have to entertain. You have to send everyone home already looking forward to the next one. You have been in the music business for a 1/4 century, you have watched the music industry change quite a bit in that time, is it for the better? and do you think Liverpool is still offering the quality new musical talent that it used to? Yes I've lived through both models of the music industry, had the big major record deal, and the indie deal and now it's like a cottage industry. For me the modern method works brilliantly in that people who love my music can all gather together in the same place on line. I do feel for new bands though, it's much more difficult to get on the ladder than it was back in the day basically because sales have collapsed. For me Liverpool hasn't produced a genuine killer band for a while now but it will, I have 100% faith in that. Amanda Moss reports on her European t’s a bit of a trek to get to Luxembourg from Liverpool but if you’re in London it’s a short 50 minute flight. I went the long route, from Manchester to Zurich (1hr 50mins) and then a short 40 minute connection, if you don’t add up the 12 hour wait in Zurich. Still, I enjoyed time alone and the browsing the shops and restaurants, catching up on wifi and even reading a book without interruption so I was well rested when I arrived. I was whisked directly to my hotel, perfectly placed in the old town square, in the heart of the shopping district. They knew I was coming! The three day trip consisted of long walks, museums, drives around the city and visits to some of the best restaurants on offer. The programme was packed from breakfast to evening dinner but it was thoroughly enjoyable, especially getting the chance to brush up on my school French and German, both languages are spoken in equal measures here and the country has recently introduced its own language, Luxembourgish, which is mixture of them both. As the founder country of the European Union, United Nations and NATO, it’s a political heavy weight for such a tiny country but it’s residents are proud and patriotic, they adore their royal family

and little wonder as you can walk right up to the door of their palace on the high street. The people are friendly and there’s lots to do. Just be aware if you’re afraid of heights, the country is built on 2 plateaus with deep valleys and bridges that are easy to climb over and jump. Little wonder that the country has a high suicide rate. It is incredibly safe to walk around alone, even late at night and being child friendly as well it ticks all the boxes.It feels as glamorous as Monaco as an elite city break yet the wealth is understated and subtle. Mcdonalds sits comfortably two doors away from the five star restaurant in the square. A visually stunning destination, filled with museums and galleries. It is certainly a place to visit, especially as you can be in Paris, Munich or Burssells within 2 hours on a train as well so combine it as a multi European getaway. WE flew with Swiss Air. QUIRK the bemused triangle N ovember already and the new student intake will have had time to settle in by now, so it’s probably a good time to enhance their education further with some essential knowledge ahead of the next three years of their life in Liverpool.

You will have found the likes of Concert Square and Hardman Street by now, they're not easy to miss, and you have maybe even ventured as far as Mathew Street. But the real Liverpool, the city of musicians, artists and poets lies off that beaten track, safely away from the ubiquitous ringtonehouse music and the forlorn promotional staff. Here are three important city centre pubs, cultural institutions, that you should acquaint yourself with quickly in order to fully appreciate the true Scouse experience and get the most out of your time here in the Pool Of Life. The Grapes on Roscoe Street, The Pilgrim on Pilgrim Street and Ye Cracke on Rice Street are only a short crawl from each other as well as from the three universities. I’m not going to itemise their contents nor wax lyrical about the décor or detail selections from any absurdly pretentious and over-priced food menus, because there would be no point. That's not what these pubs are about, although, The Pilgrim does do a stupendous full English at weekends.

No, these three pubs, like all great pubs, are really all about the people who frequent them and it would be a criminal waste of your precious time in one of the world’s great modern cultural centres if you didn’t familiarise yourself with each of these pubs and become one of their regular clientele.

The Beatles drank in all of them, as have many more of the city’s famous sons and daughters, but you won’t find them on any sight seeing tours because that's not what they're about either. There's an old saying that if you have to ask the price of something then you probably can't afford it, well, the same holds true here in that if you have to ask why somewhere is special then you probably don't belong there.

Shaun Ryder, Bez and Rowetta Satchell from the original Happy Mondays band reunited for the new TV series Singing in the Rainforest. The show, sent the band to a remote which part of rainforest in Panama, to bring Western music and instruments to isolated tribes that had never seen them before. While there, they lived and composed music with the remote tribe Once the challenge to spend a week with an indigenous tribe in Panama for a TV show, their biggest concern wasn’t the basic living conditions, the insects or the language barrier. It was whether they could manage to get along with one another for a whole week.

“I think that was the scariest thing about it, us lot having to talk to each other all day,” said front man

Shaun Ryder. “We were more scared about that than having to live in the jungle for a week.” The seven band members travelled to Panama to live with the Embera Drua people of the Upper Chagres River as part of a new TV series Singing in the Rainforest. The aim of the trip was for the Happy Mondays and the Embera to write a piece of music together which reflects both cultures and which could be sold to raise money for the tribe. As a result, the band were required to leave their creature comforts behind and embrace jungle life with the tribe, an experience which didn’t faze the Pills and Thrills and Bellyaches stars at all. “I wasn’t nervous because I’m dead brave and fierce,” said Ryder. “It’s about an hour and 20-minute canoe ride to get there. There is no other way to get there. It was fantastic. It was like something out of, Apocalypse Now.”

“You didn’t know what was coming round the corner, whether there might be a load of crocodiles out to get you,” added backing singer Rowetta Satchell. “It didn’t happen though, it was great.” In fact the band thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found themselves embracing jungle life, living in basic village huts with the tribe. “It was surprisingly good because you are cut off from the rest of the world,” said Satchell. “It sounds scary, especially for me because I’m addicted to social media most of the time, but it was brilliant to be away from all that, and to be away from people.” And, despite the fact that the band haven’t written any new material for 23 years, they thrived on the challenge of writing new music with the tribe. “I was worried that our two different styles wouldn’t come together but it did really well,” said Satchell. “They had never heard or seen instruments like ours or seen a band like us before but they loved it.”

“They were very respectful of us and when they saw us play music it just blew them away,” said Satchell. “But we were in awe of them too because of the way they live and the way they get along. They didn’t argue. It was a fantastic experience and we were very grateful to them for letting us into their camp.” Once the show aired a few weeks ago, the track was be available for download on iTunes, with all the proceeds going towards the Embera for things such as education for the children and English lessons for the tribe. “It certainly proved that we can still write music together, said Ryder. So we will definitely do some more stuff.” “It worked out really well,” added Satchell. “Everyone enjoyed doing it and everyone loved the song. We feel really lucky to have taken part and done it.”

On a recent trip travelling and adventuring around Japan, I found myself sitting in a river in Gujo Hachiman for their annual Bon Adori Dance Festival with my friend and guide Chris. Young people from the town where jumping from the 11 metre bridge into the crystal blue river waters below. It looked great fun and and it is the locals annual challenge. Chris looked at me and said “right I’m in” he then proceeded to take his turn in doing the jump, head camera attached he delivered a perfect water entrance. It looked great.fun. Then came the million dollar question. Are you going to do it? I had 50 excuses why I shouldn’t/ couldn’t/wouldn’t. It was high; I’ve never done it before, what if I don’t get it right. Lots of ifs and buts in my head. Chirrs then said 2.43 seconds is what it took from the river to the bridge and back to me in the river. Feel the fear and do it anyway I started to think. And true to form within 2.43 seconds I was back with my friends having faced bridge challenge and overcome it. What a feeling,

CRAIG phillips- DIYHello Lifestyle Readers, Early last month, I attended the newly launched UK Construction Week which was a huge event that spanned five halls of the Birmingham NEC. Featuring nine shows specific to the UK construction industry, over 55,000 construction professionals were in attendance. I was there on behalf of Checkatrade doing a number of public talks and hosting an ‘ask the expert’ stand at the Grand Designs Live show. It was a great event and a real boost to the entire UK construction trade – here’s hoping it continues to grow year on year. Exciting news for me personally – after months of hold-ups due to various reasons, I’ll finally be able to start work on my dream house near Prescot. I’ll be living in a rented house nearby and building through the winter. I’ve given myself the fairly ambitious target of finishing and being ready to move in in nine months. Watch this space! I had the pleasure of attending and presenting an award at the Coventry and Warwickshire Sports Awards which was a grand event. I love going to these award ceremonies as you get to congratulate all the incredible athletes, coaches and volunteers who often do not get the recognition they deserve. When you have chosen your location measure up the sizes you require and mark up on the MDF sheet. A great way of forming this is to stretch a string line from the corner of your shelf, tie a pencil to the other end and move from side to side in a kind of arch shape!! Take your jigsaw and cut along your curved/ rounded line, then using your router along your cut edge to form a nice patented beveled edge to give it a true shelf finish. Always use your safety specs and mask when cutting such materials. Cut some 2”” X 1”” timber down to size - about 30mm shorter than the length of your shelves and shamper the edge. Drill some clearance holes in the timber ready to mark up on the walls where it’s about to be fixed to. Use your spirit level to make sure it’s true to the wall. Mark up and drill some 6 mm holes using the masonry drill bit and the drill set on the hammer action setting. Apply the raw plugs and screw the battens firmly to the wall using the 50mm screws. Now you’re ready to fit the shelf.

decided this year that I would not go crazy for Christmas and the tree won’t be going up until the end of the month. But I sit here in October writing this column, having just returned form the shops where the department stores are awash with glitter and my eyes have glazed over with excitement.

My trees will be sparkling in all my rooms and there will be a power surge as all my christmas decorations are draped around my house.

Without wishing to offend anyone, I believe that Christmas is no longer a religious festival but a secular celebration of winter. If you want to get technical, the Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus , who was a nice Jewish boy. Muslims and Sikhs also recognise the existence of this man. So there we are, everyone can join in the festivities. But in fact the putting up of fairy lights comes from Norway where they have even less daylight than us and so they resorted to putting up extra lights on the trees in the streets.

I am breaking my promise for there is nothing nicer than coming in from the cold to a house glistening with glitter and the warm glow of twinkling lights. I have my eye on some new lights and baubles and am stopping myself from purchasing them until after Bonfire night, but then it’s all systems GO!

For me, there is no religious attachment to buying fairy lights and glitter balls. Santa welcomes all 64
