Visit Liverpool’s Christmas Market on St Georges Plateau

Opens Friday 16th November until Sunday 23rd December

With a variety of delicious foods, festive drinks, gifts for the family and kiddies rides, there is something for everybody!

LIGHTS, ENTERTAINMENT, CHOIRS – AND ONE IMPRESSIVE FESTIVE STREET PARTY a giant light spectacular will take over Chavasse Park at Liverpool ONE as the city officially marks the start of Christmas. Polaris; dare to dream will launch on 16 November and had been developed especially for the city’s Christmas celebrations by artist Mark Robinson. The impressive light installation will launch to a back-drop of a 250-strong choir, PopVox, on Sugar house steps near John Lewis. at the same time, a festive street party will take place across Liverpool ONE. Mark said: “Every time people visit, whether it is day, dusk or evening, there will be something different to see. The exhibit is inspired by the brightest star in the constellation. It is designed to show how far and wide Liverpool’s culture has spread. It has been wonderful creating such a unique piece for the city.” Liverpool Culture director, Claire McColgan, added: “2018 has been another extraordinary year for culture in Liverpool. The fact that Liverpool ONE has chosen to commission such a bold original work to mark their Christmas celebrations shows how they embrace that love of culture and creative ambition as keenly as anyone in the city. Liverpool ONE always delivers a brilliant atmosphere at Christmas and I think Polaris will help to take this to the next level.” Further details are available from: www.liverpoolone.com/christmas

KRISTINA RIHANOFF 10

Her performance will no doubt leave you feeling hooked! Kristina left the popular Saturday night show three years ago to concentrate on starting a family with her partner Ben Cohen and says it as the best decision she has ever made. “It is difficult in showbusiness when you want to have a child. It doesn’t come naturally with work as a dancer. Strictly was an incredible job which i did for 8 years but it’s work, work, work constantly. There was something new and exciting everyday and often I thought it would be impossible to stop and I was scared I couldn’t give it up. It’s the best thing you can ever achieve as a dancer to be on Strictly and it was a hard to leave but necessary. But at the same time it is incredible stressful and intense when you are working on a television show. It’s full on, it takes over your life. you can be on call any day of the week at any hour. when you’re paired with a celebrity you have to move to their town and live close by to them so I could be in ireland or Scotland or anywhere at a moment’s notice. I literally had to drop everything. "I always wanted children and I always knew I would have to sacrifice Strictly but it is the best decision I have ever made I am very happy, i am definitely in a happy place with Ben. when you have a baby your priorities change. I can’t believe the change in myself, I am a totally different person now to when I was two years ago. you

can’t explain it unless you have children. My priorities with work are different now an I love spending time with my little girl. and taking part in pantomime means so much to me, it really is a privilege to be on stage as Tinkerbell. I know how important pantomines are in the uK." I am so excited to be coming to St helens, I have been before when I was on the Strictly tour and I loved the experience so when i got the call inviting me to do pants I jumped at the chance! The people are so lovely and it;s such a great venue. I have bene to Liverpool too and the people are so lovely and welcoming. I am looking forward to my first pantomime and a new adventure. It’s definitely going to be a fun experience and I can’t wait to see everyone.” Peter Pan is at St helens Theatre Royal from 8 december - 13 January. The full cast also includes Lewis devine; georgina Parkinson; and Si Foster. Best known for his portrayal of Mick Johnson in the Channel 4 soap opera Brookside and his recurring role of PC walsh in Last of the Summer wine, Liverpool born Louis Emerick is no stranger to the St helens stage after appearing in the 2013 production of The Ciggie Run. Louis plays series regular herman in uKTV’s zapped, which returns for a third series this autumn, and recently joined the cast of Coronation Street as Mike Thornberry, a role which he will be reprising this November. Chantelle Nolan, Theatre Manager said: “I am delighted to announce the cast for St helen’s Theatre Royal’s Christmas Panto, Peter Pan. Louis is a hugely popular household name and is a local talent hailing from Liverpool. and I am excited to welcome Kristina Rihanoff to the production, she is a firm favourite on Strictly and I

I am definitely in a happy place

am certain audiences will love her as Tinker Bell. “There are also returning favourites Lewis, georgina and Si, and with lots more surprises in store audiences are in for a real treat this year in what is I’m sure going to be our best show yet!” The action will once again jump right off the stage - get ready to be amazed with the welcome return of the magical interactive 3d scene, which proved to be a highlight for audiences during last year’s production of Snow white. with a sprinkling of fairy dust get ready to join wendy, John and Michael as they leave St helens behind, flying past the second star to the right and straight to Neverland, to enjoy daring adventures battling the evil Captain hook and his hapless henchman. get set to go on a swashbuckling adventure full of Pirates, Fairies, Lost Boys, Indians, and of course one tick-tocking crocodile, in this timeless classic tale about the Boy who Never grew up.

St helens Council’s portfolio holder for arts and culture, Councillor gill Neal, said: “we’ve taken a different approach to our Christmas lights switch on event this year, with the intention of delivering a more family-friendly and communityfocused event, as well as relocating to Church Square to support the town centre’s shopping offer.

This year’s event, Sparkle in the Square, forms part of the St helens 150 celebrations and will have a real community feel to it, with the spotlight shining on the borough’s talented musicians, local acts and school choirs who will take to the stage to entertain the crowds.

“Santa hats off to our event organisers who have managed to put together another excellent bill of entertainment which falls in line with these aims. I for one am very much looking forward to it and I hope to see our communities come together to celebrate the very best of St helens in our 150th year at what is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year.”

NATIONAL MUSEUMS LIVERPOOL HAS ANNOUNCED ITS EXHIBITIONS PROGRAMME FOR 2019, WITH A SPECIAL BUMPER YEAR FOR THE ART GALLERIES.

Tickets for the blockbuster Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibition, Charles Rennie Mackintosh: making the glasgow Style (15 March to 26 august 2019) are already on sale. Spanning the lifetime of Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) and his contemporaries between 1890 and 1920, the exhibition will explore the movement that became known as The glasgow Style; glasgow being the birthplace of the only art Nouveau ‘movement’ in the uK, with its style and popularity of design spreading all over the world. The exhibition will present objects from glasgow Museums and the Mitchell Library and archives, as well as loans from private and public collections. More than 250 objects will be on display across the full spectrum of media, including stained glass, ceramics, mosaic, metalwork, furniture, stencilling, embroidery, graphics, 16

books, interiors and architecture. also starting the walker’s 2019 programme will be a showcase of Leonardo da Vinci’s greatest drawings from the Royal Collection. Leonardo da Vinci: a Life in drawing (1 February to 6 May 2019) will mark the 500th anniversary of the death of this Renaissance master, as part of a nationwide event across 12 simultaneous exhibitions in the uK, giving the widest-ever uK audience the opportunity to see the work of this extraordinary artist. The Lady Lever art gallery will be welcoming Rembrandt in Print (1 June to 15 September 2019). Organised by the ashmolean Museum, which holds a world class collection of over 200 prints made by Rembrandt harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669). This exhibition will present Rembrandt as an unrivalled storyteller through a selection of around 50 outstanding prints, dating from 1630 to the late 1650s. widely hailed as the greatest painter of the dutch golden age, Rembrandt was also one of the most innovative and experimental printmakers of the 17th century, and the works displayed at the Lady Lever will cover a varied selection of subjects including intense self-portraits, atmospheric landscapes, intimate family portraits, biblical stories and confronting nude studies. Meanwhile, world Museum is marking two international ‘moments’. astronomy Photographer of the year (3 May to 1 September 2019) coincides with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing (20 July 1969). This special exhibition celebrates the very best in astrophotography from around the world, showcasing up to 100 images from the 2018 competition shortlist including entries from enthusiastic amateurs and

professional photographers from 91 countries. Images featured in the exhibition include a mesmerising mosaic of the great Orion and the Running Man Nebula and a magical scene of an aurora Borealis exploding over the south coast of Iceland. during the uK/Japan Season of Culture running from autumn 2019 to Summer 2020, world Museum will stage the first ever exhibition of Taki Katei’s work outside Japan (4 October 2019 to 13 april 2020). It draws on National Museums Liverpool’s rare archive of more than 300 exquisite preparatory drawings the artist used for teaching, for preparation of some of his major commissions, and as an aidemémoire. a favourite of the Emperor of Japan, Taki Katei (1830 – 1901) was once the highest-paid artist in Tokyo, and his works travelled to international exhibitions around the world. This exhibition will tell the story of how this astonishing collection of ink drawings and watercolours travelled thousands of miles from an artist’s studio in Tokyo to a museum in Liverpool.

Continuing at the Museum of Liverpool is the ground-breaking double Fantasy – John & yoko exhibition (until 22 april 2019), which has already welcomed more than 200,000 visitors through its doors www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk

KIM WOODBURN

KIM WOODBURN APPEARS AS THE WICKED WITCH IN SNOWWHITE AND THE & DWARFS AT THE EPSTEIN THEATRE THIS SEASON. SHE CHATS TO AMANDA MOSS ABOUT HER ROLE... Do you think you’re type cast as a baddie? wel I can do sweet, dear, but I suppose because I am strong an feisty I am always going to be. But I can play princesses too but I don’ mind, I am known for being bold and brash and that’s half the fun, dear. 20

what do you love about panto? Everything. It’s so British, I hope that whatever happens in the future the panto remains firmly in Britain. we change so much, but don’t ever change the panto. you can’t explain if you’re not British - women dressed as men, men dressed as women, it’s just good wholesome fun. You have a close affection for liverpool, why is that? I came up from Portsmouth when I was just 16 years old and had nowhere to go and I am so glad I chose Liverpool. Scousers are like no one else, their humour, their warmth, it’s just wonderful. I am glad I went to Liverpool then and not another city and I have loved it ever since. what are you hoping for christmas? Nothing really except good health. Christmas is no more important that Easter or birthdays, it’s just another day to celebrate. what is your most extravagant christmas present you have ever bought?

Ooh dear, I don’t do extravagant but I will tell you that my husband of 39 years bought me a lovely ring, bless him. would you ever do a reality Tv show again? I would but I haven’t been asked! I love animals and children and if something came up like that I would do it in a heartbeat. I tell you what I would love to do is to be an actress. I see myself as a Mrs Slocombe or hyacinth Bucket. You have so much energy and are really inspiring, what is your secret? Sex for breakfast, sex for lunch, sex, sex, sex. ha ha isn’t that what everyone says these days? I don’t know dear, my father was Scottish and a very strong man and he also had massive energy so he just passed it onto me. I think I was a fighter in a former life, running over the Scottish highlands charging. I can see that now. I am blessed with good health and I don’t define that by age (I am 70) but by how I feel. I’m fit as a fiddle and very happy. Do you still love to clean? Oh yes, I still do. My husband tells me to leave it until tomorrow but a clean home makes me feel happy.

ADOPTERS NEEDED ACROSS MERSEYSIDE ThE regional adoption agency for Merseyside is highlighting the need for more people to provide homes for children.

commitment of adoption. you will also need time, patience, love and resilience to help a child reach their full potential.

adoption in Merseyside (aiM) which recruits for local authorities in Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton and wirral - is urging people to think about providing a loving, stable home for Merseyside's children.

adoptive parents from a wide range of backgrounds are welcomed as it helps to be able to match them with children who have very varied needs.

adopted children are unable to live with their birth families for many reasons and move to live permanently with a new family, taking their surname and assuming the same rights and privileges as if they had been born to them. Children who need adoptive families often need a little extra from their new parents, and over the next year aiM is looking to recruit over 80 sets of adopters. Jenny Ness, head of Service for aiM, said: "Becoming an adopter is life changing, for everyone involved and is the single most important thing that will ever happen to a young person as it completely transforms their life chances". "For the adopter, there truly is nothing more rewarding or fulfilling. although the process of becoming an adopter has to be extremely thorough, we try and make it as pain free as possible. "I would urge anyone who has ever thought about adoption to get in touch with us - it could be the best decision you ever make." you will need to have a childfriendly lifestyle, provide a stable environment and be ready for the challenge and lifelong 22

applications are open to people from all backgrounds regardless of age, race, religion, ethnicity, gender or sexuality. Couples, single people, disabled people and people from all cultures are welcome. aiM are particularly looking for parents who can offer a home to children of all ages who: • are part of a sibling group • are disabled or have a medical condition • have complex needs • are from different ethnic or cultural backgrounds You must be: • Over 21 and mature enough to meet the demands of parenthood • Fit and well enough to care for children until they are adults • able to offer a secure home with a spare room for one or more children a drop in adoption information evening is being held on Tuesday 30 October from 4-7pm in garston. new look this season and Lifestyle’s Neil woods was invited to come and sample the new menu. Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat! and so am I after eating at Las Iguanas! But I have no regrets as the food was outstanding. Our waitress Lindsay took us through the amazing South american delights on offer, pointing out the tempting happy hour deal of 2-for-1 cocktails, and the tapas deal of five dishes , she was happy to advise on Brazilian, Mexican & Latin american food & cocktails available to accompany our food choices. we started our evenings feast with choosing 5 Tapas from the varied looking menu, we ordered havana Club and Jerk BBQ glazed Pork Ribs, Pan-fried halloumi Skewers with Oregano

28

and Sweet Chilli Sauce and Mini Chorizo dogs, Copacabana Chicken, Spiced Masa Fried Chicken; Coated Thigh Pieces with a Spicy amarillo aioli and Pato Taquito, Roast duck and Caramelised Onion rolled in a Char-grilled Flour Tortilla with Spicy Cranberry Salsa. we all opted for the argentian main meals of Blazing Bird. 24 hour-marinated jerk chicken, served with slaw & a choice of fries or salad. Served-up with your choice: Buenos aires Burger. Our 100% prime short rib & chuck beef patty and gaucho Steak. 10oz sirloin steak sprinkled with ancho chilli salt, served with fresh herb chimichurri, argentine-style roasted sweetcorn purée & a choice of fries or salad. The 3 of us also had a few 2 for 1 famous Las iguanas cocktails

from £8.95 for 2 drinks from an extensive list plus a couple of Brazilian Brahmas beer. I have not enjoyed a meal this delicious for a long time in such vibrant surroundings and congratulate Las Iguanas for capturing the Latin american vibe so perfectly. It’s a great place to celebrate this party season.

RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SASSY MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO a utumn is nearly over and what

better way to get the perfect inspiration for my winter wardrobe than by hosting the opening night of Liverpool Fashion week at the British Music Experience with one of my best mates Jay hynd from The guide Liverpool. amanda had made the national press with her “no heels on the catwalk “ policy, and it was a refreshing change to see a much more natural look thanks to Sherrie warwick and some incredible designers with some amazing looks! The venue was simply perfect to house such an event and we loved being part of it .. another success for you amanda Moss !! It followed one of the most exciting and profitable weekends for our incredible city with the visit or the Royal de luxe giants for the third and last time! It was just magical to be part of this story unfolding in our city and having followed them on each visit, even from when the giant spider appeared on a building in Lime Street so many years ago, it was wonderful once again to experience this with my kids and be part of such an amazing piece of theatre that they will be able to relate to their children and grand children and the atmosphere was just incredible and confirmed why Liverpool was chosen for the

32

giants to retire and be seen for the final time! One of the most ingenious things ever is currently on offer at the Clubhouse .. Cocktail selfies! It’s the easiest thing to do by scanning a pic for x yourself onto an app and then it’s delivered on your cocktail .. Plus any excuse to drink an espresso martini!!! I have been told by so many people how much I would love Bongos Bingo but I had underestimated just how right they were! we had a work night out from Radio City and I don’t think I stopped dancing and laughing the whole time I was at the Camp and Furnace. I can understand how these tickets are like gold dust and I will be desperately trying to book to go again! when there’s often so much focus on negativity it was a wonderful idea from amanda to host the positivity awards at the hilton which celebrated the work that people do and the positivity they bring to the city .. so many worthy winners most of all Lee Kelly from LhK productions for all he has brought to the entertainment industry and bringing so much into people's lives and I can’t wait to work with him again at Christmas! we had the official Panto Press launch at the Epstein and already there’s a great spark between the cast and I’m looking forward to Christmas more than ever! I can’t mention positive people in Liverpool without mentioning my dear friend Miguel doforo! I was honoured to be asked to host his Blank Canvas evening to raise funds for so many people both young and old that he is helping within our community.. superb performances by my fave girl Band girl Talk and Md Productions and despite facing troubles of late Miguel never gives in or gives up. I was asked to host the Spider Ede ball at hillbark hotel to not only celebrate Edies 4th birthday but also to try and raise much needed funds for this brave little girls incredible journey. Performances again from girl Talk and Md Productions plus the fabulous Tricia McTeague, Ray Quinn and Marc Kenny. Finally it was also the month my mum celebrated her 75th birthday .. I’m very private over my mums health but for the last 2 years this woman has battled everything that’s been thrown at her, still finding the humour, still looking beautiful and showing how strength and sheer will and determination can defy any medical diagnosis.. I love you mum and you’ve made me the person I am today who can cope with whatever life throws at me.

A PUBLIC HEALTH CAMPAIGN OUTLINING THE STEPS PEOPLE CAN TAKE TO MITIGATE THE IMPACT OF AIR POLLUTION HAS LAUNCHED IN LIVERPOOL.

“It contributes to around 230 deaths per year in Liverpool and while everyone can be affected, children, the elderly and those with heart of lung conditions are most susceptible to harm. “There is no safe level of air pollution and reduction of pollutants is good for health. People can take steps to reduce their exposure by choosing to walk or cycle away from busier roads. “air pollution inside your car can be especially higher especially in slow-moving traffic, so walking can be a good way to reduce your exposure as well as improving your fitness and being good for your wellbeing.” dr gareth Jones, respiratory consultant for adults at the Royal Liverpool hospital, said: “air pollution increases the risk of needing to be admitted to hospital with heart and lung conditions. 38

“The choices we make every day affect how much pollution ends up in the air we breathe. “while other things such as stopping smoking or being active are crucially important for our health, it is also important that we all play a part in reducing air pollution. “Improving air quality isn’t an easy task, but if everyone plays their part and makes small changes, we can significantly reduce the amount of harmful chemicals that we are breathing in.

The city council is already working on a number of initiatives to drive a reduction in air pollution, including: Reducing traffic congestion in key areas through the

advice being given by liverpool city council includes: • walk for short journeys when you can. It is also good for your physical and mental health • Park away from nurseries and schools when dropping off and picking up your child to reduce air pollution around the school gate • Turn off your car engine when it is stationary or parked • Leave your car at home when you can and take public transport • If you are changing your car, choose a cleaner engine, e.g. hybrid rather than diesel • walk on the inside of the pavement away from traffic to reduce the amount of pollution you breathe in • Close windows during rush hour if you live on or close to a busy road

“we know we have to lead by example, for example by changing our fleet of vehicles to be greener, encouraging hackney drivers to move over to less polluting vehicles and working with Merseytravel to deliver a better and cleaner bus service. “we’re looking to reduce traffic congestion in key areas – like the Strand, new Islington and Bowring Park Road by the Rocket - and making improvements to roads and walk ways to encourage people to walk and cycle more. EXTREME MARATHON RUNNER PREPARES FOR HIS NEXT CHALLENGE WITH HELP FROM SPIRE HOSPITAL

m arathon runner, Rob Pope, well known for his epic run across the uSa emulating the journey of the movie character Forrest gump, has visited Spire Leeds hospital for treatment after a groin injury stopped him in his tracks. his aim is to get back into tip top condition for his next adventure. The 40-year-old veterinarian from Liverpool took time out from his practice and embarked on a momentous journey in September 2016, following the route of Tom hanks’ Oscar-winning character Forrest gump. Rob ran 4.8 times across the uS clocking up 15,720 miles in a challenge that took him almost two years to complete, to raise funds for causes he believes in – Peace direct and the world wildlife Fund. Running 40 miles a day, seven days a week, he started from Mobile, alabama travelling to Santa Monica Pier, California and back across 18

States to Marshall Point Lighthouse in Maine. In temperatures ranging from minus 18 to 41 degrees, Rob tackled many issues along the way including achilles tendinopathy, torn quadriceps muscles and even a bout of food poisoning. Rob said, “The groin injury started niggling during the uS run. It started with a sharp pain in the stomach muscles and hip. I managed to carry on however, it became more of worry after I returned to the uK as the pain stopped me running and also disturbed my sleep.” he visited Spire Leeds hospital for a consultation with dr Jon Power, Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine, who examined Rob and arranged an MRI exam. dr Power prescribed a targeted rehab regime to help get Rob back fighting fit for his next challenge. Commenting on the physio regime, which is a collaboration between dr Power and Rob’s physio Leigh halfteck, Rob said, “I’m very grateful for all the help Spire is giving me. It’s really about readjusting the body after months of running in a particular style to one that would allow me to return to competition standard. I'm currently trying to reverse my trend from an anterior pelvic tilt by stretching hip flexors alongside strengthening my gluteals by doing

sumo squats, bridging exercises, clamshells and side leg raises. I'm also taking a break from running and using the cross trainer and watt bike, with an emphasis on making sure I'm not using my right side more than my left. Basically, I'm doing what I'm told!

Commenting on Rob’s case, dr Power said, “The aim of the rehab plan is to return Rob to pain free distance running at the high speeds necessary for him to compete Internationally. all rehab plans require hard work and diligence and we are confident that Rob will be fitter, faster and stronger, ready to complete his next challenge.” Rob said he was inspired by the Forrest gump movie to do the run. “I’d wanted to run across the uS for about 15 years and to do something for these two great charities that would make people take notice. I followed the exact same route as far as possible from the map featured in the film and visited the same landmarks.” highlights of the epic run included breaking the guinness world Book of Records for the fastest male marathon runner in a film character costume, becoming the first person ever to run across the country three times in a year and rescuing and rehoming a stray dog that tagged along with him for part of the way. On completion of the run, Rob proposed to his girlfriend Nadine, who said “yes”. his next challenge, in april 2019, will take him to the Marathon des Sables in Southern Morocco, where he will compete in a six-day, 251 km ultramarathon. This roughly equates

to the distance of six regular marathons and is often referred to as the toughest foot race on Earth. Rob is writing a book documenting his uS journey, which is planned for publication next year.

donations are still coming in from the run. For anyone wanting to make a donation to Rob’s chosen charities please visit his going the distance fundraising page at: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-display/showROFundraiserPage?userurl=goingthedistancerun&pageurl=2

MOGWAI WITH SPECIAL GUESTS THE TWILIGHT SAD PLAY LIVERPOOL EVENTIM OLYMPIA ON THURSDAY 22ND NOVEMBER 2018!

l ast year saw Mogwai release

their eagerly anticipated ninth studio album, Every Country’s Sun via their own Rock action Records in vinyl, Cd and digital formats. The record is their first studio album since 2014’s Rave Tapes, and sees them reuniting with producer dave Fridmann for the first time since 2001’s acclaimed

It was recorded at Fridmann’s Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New york. Their most transportive album yet, it also hosts their most fully realised art-pop sing-along of their storied history, Party In The dark, a head-spinning discodream double-helix echoing New Order and The Flaming Lips. This is music as a keep-out chrysalis, protective audio armour through exalting organs and portentous, dissonant guitar fuzz warping at the edges, bending the world inside-out into a reality in which you'd much rather live. The last three songs ascend into explosive exorcism, closing with the colossal title track, its searching intensity whooshing towards infinity in a

dazzling cosmic crescendo.Formed in glasgow in 1995, and their output numbers eight studio albums, 13 EPs, two remix albums, two live albums and four compilation albums including 2015's collection Central Belters. They’ve also contributed soundtracks to an impressive spectrum of cinematic releases (both full soundtracks and contributions): alongside atomic (a Top 20 uK album in 2016), there's been consistent acclaim for projects including French TV series Les Revenants (2013) and contributions to Leonardo diCaprio's climate change documentary Before The Flood (2016) alongside Trent Reznor and atticus Ross.

The Lancaster house hotel is a deluxe 4-star hotel, a short drive away from the historic city of Lancaster, with its castle and brewery, and a few minutes from Junction 33 of the M6 which is precisely an hour and 15 minutes drive from Liverpool, making it a perfect weekend get away. The hotel far exceeded my expectations ahead of our family invitation to stay. we arrived on Friday night; myself, the husband and our six children and our extra special guest, our dog Millie, who has never stayed in a hotel before. The entrance was spectacular, large open gables, enormous roaring fireplace and a bowl of dog biscuits for four legged guests. It really is refreshing to see a hotel welcome pets, they go out of their way for dog owners, setting up a table in the bar for breakfast for us so Millie could join us under the table. (dogs aren’t allowed in the main restaurant) The accommodation is luxurious with studio suites featuring a separate lounge area and a standalone bath. Elemis spa products were on hand for us to use. The award-winning Foodworks Restaurant treats guests to delicious cuisine but those with pets are served in the Sandeman bar, a more relaxed area featuring images from Sandeman brewery in Portugal; ironically another press trip I

went on a couple of years ago. The dinner menu including the region’s favourite dishes prepared from fresh, local produce. I loved the starter of cheese and meats and freshly baked bread and olive oil.The sirloin steak was exceptional quality, Simon’s Lancashire hotpot was sumptiously warming on an autumn evening and Millie enjoyed the bones of the lamb under the table. all the kids are rave meat eaters so the steaks we were served were deliciously welcome. we stuffed ourselves with dessert too, a minted chocolate pudding with berry compote, strawberry shortcake, bread and butter pudding and locally made ice cream including rhubarb flavour. after dinner we went to The Sandpiper Club to pamper ourselves in the 15-metre indoor pool which overlooks the high-spec fitness suite. The outdoor jacuzzi was gorgeous in the crisp air, though a little too much chlorine for my eyes! a brief steam and jacuzzi, swim and back to our gorgeous rooms, we had 2 which were just stunning. an enormous double bed with a separate living area which turned into a second bedroom for the kids. as a serial insomniac I slept from 11am until 6am which says something about the quality of the beds. 10 out of 10 for comfort, In the morning we woke early to go for a walk in the beautiful countryside. we then enjoyed an enormous breakfast before heading to williamson park to walk off our freshly baked croissants, fresh fruit and full English. The staff went out of their way to accommodate a large family and our dog. The service was impeccable, the venue is incredible and a gem in the heart of Lancashire. we will be returning, it was amazing. 55

DARREN VISION Meritocracy

The workplace is essentially a

Meritocracy ... be bright, work hard and you will get some form of reward.

The word Meritocracy was first coined by Michael young in the 1950’s and with it there came a simple formula ... Intelligence + Effort = Merit. It was Michael young that launched the Open university and he also started the which Magazine, so he was a major thinker of his time. So be bright and work hard and maybe you get a wage rise, or a promotion, or maybe even get to be the top dog. The beauty of the formula is its simplicity ... you take the two ingredients of intelligence and hard graft and marry them together and you will be rewarded. as the Meerkat says, simples. But there is a hidden part of the formula, the part that many people don’t quite get ... Intelligence has two faces. One face is the straightforward

understanding of Intelligence ... some call it your IQ ... the measure of how logical and rational you are ... how good your memory and attention are ... and your ability to grasp things quickly. It’s true that bright people tend to stand out but why is it that they don’t always excel? Or just don’t quite have that something to makes them into a leader. Often it is because they don’t understand the other face of Intelligence. The other face is Emotional Intelligence ... sometimes referred to as EQ. It’s about how you deal with people and situations. Those that display strong Emotional Intelligence tend to understand the other persons perspective ... they don’t necessarily agree with them but they understand them. They see criticism as a positive not a negative. as well as being able to take

feedback they give helpful feedback to others. They don’t rush to make important decisions and if they get things wrong they will apologise. They keep their commitments and will give praise to others willingly and genuinely. In the game of Meritocracy Top Trumps it is the Emotional Intelligence card you need to be holding, it’s worth most points. and competition is getting tougher by the year. The amount of young people going into higher Education in the uK has never been bigger, last year it was 49%. That’s nearly half of all young people with qualifications that show they have some Intelligence. So it has never been more important to have Emotional Intelligence to set you apart from the crowd. To find out methods or to discuss strategies you may want to develop in these areas, email darren@dasala.co.uk or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren. 57

Lifestyle

random acts of kindness can put a spring in your step for the rest of the www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk day. on a recent trip I gave £5 to a lady who didn’t have change for a parking meter so she could park all day. It’s nice to help people no matter howeditor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk small the gesture @amandalifestyle is. but when your kindness is taken advantage of, well, that’s a whole different story. my entire business is based on public relations and advertising. I help small businesses reach their customers, promotion is my middle name and fame is my game. want to be in a newspaper? No problem. want to tell your story on air on the radio? I can definitely get people talking about you. give me a call. Don’t however message me for free tickets for my events which make up a huge percentage of my business revenue. or ask for a free advert in the magazine “to see what the response is” before making a financial commitment. I don’t go to a bakery and eat half a sandwich to see if I like the taste before buying it. I don’t walk into a boutique and ask to wear a dress for a couple of days to see if I get a compliment from people, before I actually purchase it. and I don’t put on events just to entertain others. my name is not robbie williams. aside from the huge costs of putting an event together, these awards and shows create business opportunities, bring people together and form new relationships in the business community. I have linked together hundreds of businesses with new customers. and I make people feel great about what they do because being an entrepreneur and small business owner can be hard and lonely so a bit of reassurance with the presentation of a well deserved award can go a long way. I love what I do and I am very good at it. If lifestyle magazine didn’t work no one would advertise each month over the last 10 years. we are raised in a culture where everyone wants something for free. my 30 years of working in the media has value, my knowledge of the industry is definitely worth paying for. I am worthy and so are you. believe me, I want to help, I know it will benefit you but there will be a cost attached to it if you want to be taken seriously. understand that people value what they pay for and you’re not doing a disservice by charging them, you’re actually creating a profound service for people who want to take action. remember you are worthy
