LADIES OF L EI SURE: WOMEN TAKE MORE HOLIDAY S A Y EAR THA N ME N new research reveals that women are going on holiday more than men are within the year. some stats include: • 15% of the population it takes 3-4 months to save up for a holiday. • 5% of males spent an average of £251 between £500. • 25% of males said that they have been on holiday at least once a year

however, even though more women go on at least one holiday each year, it’s men like take more holidays throughout the year, as a fifth (19%) of male respondents said that they have been on holiday as much as three times a year, while 18% of their female counterparts said the same. other data has shown that 15% of males spent an average of £501-£705 for a holiday. for the same figure, females rank slightly higher resulting to 16%. for the holiday accessories, the average spend of 18% of males spent around £50. where as 14% of women spend between £251 and £500!

Brits were asked to confess to their holiday spending habits and it has exposed the difference between men and women and what they are really splashing their cash on.

Sabrina hamilton of ocean florida says: “It’s interesting to see that more women are taking holidays each year as opposed to men, yet it’s those men that do go on holiday that go on more throughout the year. we know more than most people that everyone deserves a holiday at some point throughout the year.

new research, from a survey conducted by ocean florida, reveals that 16% of people in the uK are splurging between £751 and £1000 on a holiday.

“It’s the perfect time for people to be able to switch off from normal working life and really relax and destress.”

the data has also shown that for 15% of the population it takes 3-4 months to save up for a holiday. Respondents were asked what was the average cost they have paid on a holiday. one in 20 (5%) of males spent an average of £251 between £500. where as 13% of women spent the same. when asked how many times they go on holiday in the year, a quarter (25%) of males said that they have been on holiday at least once a year. while a third (31%) of females said the same.

NO NEED TO ‘THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX’ IN LIVERPOOL’S NEW VAULT AT THE ROYAL LIVER BUILDING Liverpool’s first independent safe deposit box facility has opened in the historic Royal Liver Building on the waterfront. Liverpool Vaults offers over 1,000 safe deposit lockers, protected by cutting edge security and sophisticated technology, which surpasses the standards even set by banks. the facility allows private individuals and businesses to safeguard their most valued possessions in a secure vault. Located in the famous building’s basement, the space was once a secret vault guarding Royal Liver’s records. It’s now been given a £1 million makeover by Liverpool Vaults, who have transformed the space in to a state-ofthe-art purpose built safe deposit box facility. It includes surveillance technology such as seismic shock sensors, round-theclock monitoring and biometric identification technology for clients. access to the high security vault will be granted through a navigation of personal identification, biometric scanner, customer code and digital photo recognition. the vault is manned on-site by highly trained security professionals in conjunction with an outside security company, ensuring round the clock 24hour security protection.

Clients can visit the vault 7 days a week, with unlimited free access. the facility will offer various box sizes to suit all client requirements, with rental from less than £3 per week and discounts available for long-term rentals. Smaller boxes are ideal for the storage of jewellery, cash, valuable coins and computer back-up discs while the midrange boxes are designed to keep papers, house deeds and other important documents. the larger boxes are ideal for items such as luxury watches and jewellery in boxes, precious metals, paperwork and valuable artwork which needs to be stored securely. Co-founder Séamus fahy says: “we are delighted to open a safe deposit facility in Liverpool, especially in such an iconic location as the Royal Liver Building. there was already a vault in the basement which once guarded Royal Liver’s records, so this location was perfect for us. “with many major banks no longer offering safe deposit box services to customers, we have seen a huge demand for our facilities, as companies and individuals look to secure their valued possessions safely.

create a world-class independent safe deposit box facility. Liverpool Vaults gives clients complete discretion, unparalleled security and absolute piece of mind.” Co-founder david walsh, added: “with many major banks no longer offering safe deposit box services to customers, we have seen a huge demand for our facilities, as companies and individuals look to secure their valued possessions safely. “the Liverpool opening is part of our ambitious plans for further growth across the uK. we are looking forward to establishing the vault in the city and providing a much-needed service which allows customers to store their valuable and irreplaceable possessions.” the Liverpool opening marks the latest move in a series of new openings for the company, with vaults already up and running in glasgow, newcastle-upontyne and dublin. HOLLYOAKS HAS NEVER BEEN MORE IN STYLE SO LIFESTYLE CAUGHT UP WITH ACTRESSES JAZMINE FRANKS AND SARAH JAYNE DUNN AHEAD OF LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK How big an influence is fashion in your personal life? almost everyday I’ll flick through aSoS new in section. Even when I’m only going to the gym I like to make sure my sportswear is colour coordinated. I enjoy putting outfits together for upcoming events. What staple pieces do you like to wear? I love a bright shoe. Sophia webster is one of my favourite brands for a fabulous shoe. I’m also wearing a lot of leopard print at the moment. What’s your beauty saviour product after a heavy day filming? Simple. wipes! as soon as I get home the make up comes off. I do follow this with a dermalogica toner and moisturiser but I carry simple wipes everywhere with me. I try to keep my face make up free as often as possible. What’s been your favourite storyline to date? Esther’s bullying storyline is definitely the storyline I’m most 10

proud of from hollyoaks. I found that it really challenged me as an actor and the response from people on social media was really positive. Do you think there’s additional pressure to keep in shape? 100%. I joined hollyoaks when I was 18 and as much as I had a gym membership it was rarely used. Being in an environment where everyone is aware of what they’re eating and how often they work out certainly rubbed off on me. I started seeing a personal trainer and now I’d say the gym is my hobby. I’ve learnt to love myself, I’m not going to look like the girls on instagram (I don’t even know if they look like they do on instagram) but I’m certainly comfortable in my own skin now. I think we all need to stop trying to compare ourselves to others and try and be the best version of ourselves. Do you follow a fitness regime? yes. I Powerlift so my fitness regime is pretty hardcore. I love it though. It’s given me something to focus on whilst I’m between jobs and I love the discipline that comes with it. the only thing I don’t like is having to stand on the scales often. as I have to be a certain weight for competitions I find that I’m constantly checking my weight. If I wasn’t powerlifting I’d throw my scales in the bin. What is your favourite item in your wardrobe? a plain white t shirt. I know this sounds boring but it goes with everything, you can dress it up or keep it casual and it allows

for my shoes to be the staple piece of my outfit. Where do you like to shop and why? aSoS for efficiency, free postage and returns makes it so easy. I also love websites like PLt and missguided. us ladies only like to wear an outfit once and so they’re cheap enough to buy and then sell on through apps like depop which is perfect. Instore or online, which is better? I do love shopping in store but I see going to the trafford Centre or into town like a trip out now. online is just accessible and quick if you need that last minute outfit. What are you saving up for christmas? we usually go away from Boxing day through the new year so its always something I save up for towards the end of the year. obviously saving for presents for friends and family is something I’m doing at the moment too. How will you be spending halloween? my boyfriend’s birthday always falls the weekend of halloween so it’s very rare we celebrate it properly. Saying that, halloween is one of my holidays, I love being spooked and enjoy going to the scare parks that pop up over the north west. Best halloween costume? my boyfriend and I went to the hollyoaks halloween party last year dressed as the couple from the Purge which was the simplest of costumes but was really effective. Everyone was petrified of us.

How big an influence is fashion in your personal life? I love fashion and trying out new trends. Playing a character everyday means I also get to tryout fashions I wouldn't normally pick for myself. my character dresses well and always gets a lot of interest in what she's wearing.

recently completed a 12 week transformation with them in the lead up to my wedding. I'm in the best shape I've ever been in and that's through eating a sensible, healthy diet and nourishing my body with the right foods and weight train 3 times a week. I absolutely love it and feel lost now if I haven't been to the gym

What staple pieces do you like to wear? I love a good pair of jeans a white t-shirt and a blazer. I think it's a timeless look that can be dressed up or down with heels or trainers

What is your favourite item in your wardrobe? I have a pair of leather paperboy shorts from River Island and I can't wear them enough at the moment, they look great with everything!

What’s your beauty saviour product after a heavy day filming? I use glamglow's face mask to remove impurities and exfoliate my skin. Epsom salts in a nice hot bath help ease my muscles and relax me after a long day. What’s been your favourite storyline to date? I've had so many fantastic storylines with the show over the years it's hard to choose! I love playing the comedy as we have so much heavy stuff it's nice to have lighter days but I think my current storyline is one of my favourite's, mandy's affair with darren. It's completely torn the audience but I think that's because it's real and painful, the characters have history and I think that makes it believable. Do you think there’s additional pressure to keep in shape? I believe we live in a time where everyone feels pressure to look a certain way but I hope those ideas are changing, there's currently a lot of positive movements going on to encourage people to be happy in and to love their own body and I think this is a wonderful thing and fully support the notion. Do you follow a fitness regime? I work with uP fitness and

Where do you like to shop and why? mostly high street and online. I'm a big fan of River Island, topshop, new Look and zara and aSoS is great for online shopping. I think you can get high quality on trend fashion without spending a fortune Instore or online, which is better? I enjoy in store more as I like to see and touch and try on what I'm buying but online is so much more convenient when I need something last minute or don't have time to get to the shops What are you saving up for christmas? me and my husband are going away on our first family holiday with our 2 year old son Stanley so all our Christmas money is going towards that How will you be spending halloween? I haven't planned it yet but I'll hopefully be going to a fancy dress party, I love halloween and choosing a costume Best halloween costume? I enjoy the make up more than the costumes as I get to be really creative.

IT’S OFFICIAL - LIVERPOOL IS CROWNED THE COMEDY CAPITAL OF THE UK • a quarter of Brits have voted Liverpool as the funniest city in the uK. • Comedy Central Live polled the nation to explore the places and people Brits find the funniest. • 86% of people from Liverpool feel sense of humour is more important in a partner than good looks. • three quarters of Liverpudlians feel it is important to have banter at work to enjoy your job. • three quarters of the uK say northerners make them laugh more than those in the south.

famed for its cheeky sense of humour, Liverpool has been crowned the comedy capital of uK, chosen by 23 percent of the nation as the place which contains the funniest people in Britain. newcastle and London follow in second and third spots, with manchester and then glasgow making up the top five funniest cities in the uK. the study has reignited the age-old ‘north versus south’ debate and turned up a new trump card for northerners – they are officially funnier than

their southern counterparts. a massive 74 percent of the nation believe that northerners are naturally hilarious and even 61 percent of people who live down south admit their northern brethren are more comedic than them. when asked how funny they think they are, over two thirds (71%) of Liverpudlians rate themselves highly, proclaiming themselves as either ‘funny’ or ‘very funny’. almost all (96%) Liverpudlians believe “laughter is the best medicine” saying they feel better after a good laugh.

CHRISTAKIS GREEK TAVERNA 256 Smithdown Rd, Liverpool L15 5aE 0151 733 0375 REVIEw By amanda moSS

Greek Cypriot of origin,

Christakis moved to Liverpool in 1998 and quickly established himself in the restaurant industry, for the past 2 decades he has run Christakis greek taverna, originally in york Street and now firmly established in the leafy suburb of Smithdown Road. my family who also own a property in southern Cyprus adore the food and were keen to see if the restaurant lived up to its excellent reputation. It serves traditional greek Cypriot recipes that my children said tasted better than their favourite taverna in ayia napa, Cyprus. So to get a thumbs up from critical teenager is high praise indeed. turning up with six children in tow sometimes puts waiters in a mad flap but not at Christakis. we were made to feel welcome as soon as we entered, ushered to a large table hastily filled up with baskets of traditional greek breads. for starters I chose the Spanakopita, piping hot spinach and feta cheese in filo pastry while my daughter selected the lentil soup. my son chose the Keftedes, greek meatballs in tomato sauce. absolutely delicious and nothing was wasted. for mains I had my staple

20

favourite- Chicken Kleftiko as did 4 of the kids. the hubby had his favourite, the Stifado; silverside of beef slow cooked with garlic and onions that just melted in the mouth. the other two chose chicken fillet marinated in ouzo, white cream and mushroom sauce. utterly fabulous. all main courses were served with enormous servings of rice, greek salad and delicious oregano potato chips. we didn’t need a dessert but the adults were given peach schapps and some greek sweets to wash down our perfect meal. food is cooked on a real charcoal grill and their specialities include Lamb Kleftiko, mezedes, mussaka, afelia and greek meatballs. all meals can be requested with halal meat and gluten free on request. Christakis is highly recommended, not just for the

amazing food but the service as well. you’re made to feel like you’ve been invited into his home and you are the guest of honour. the prices are very reasonable, children of all ages are made to feel welcome and the food is exceptionally good. what more could you want? Every Thursday, Friday and saturday join the party with traditional greek dancing included from just £15

LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK HAS ALWAYS CHAMPIONED EMERGING DESIGNERS. APPEARING ON NEW TALENT NIGHT ON 9 OCTOBER IS ANDREA BENAHMED DIJILANI WITH HER COLLECTION, ANDREAD

How did you get into fashion design? I studied as a dressmaker and learnt about pattern making, design, sewing technics. I have mainly focused on my family since then. I have been working as a machinist with yarwood Leather however I feel I would now like to progress and start my passion in studying fashion design. (I want to be an example for all women who have a thinking “too late. never too late!) I started designing leather products and this year in 2018 I started my own design and brand in clothes and handbags. In 2017 I won the Italian International art & design Competition. Describe your style? I love working with leather designing products for women. my

designs are unique, artistic, elegant, romantic and handmade Who inspires you? the 18th century style inspires me mostly. I get a lot of inspiration from the world around . when I walk down the street I see fabrics, fashions and from that I then get inspiration for my unique designs. I like ChanEL designs. With ethical fashion becoming more prominent how difficult do you find it to source ethical materials as a small independent? fast fashion is a problem and are expensive and well reported. my designs are timeless. Beyond skin for example specialises in vegan leather and 100% naturel cork material bags. I am always looking into new ethical materials. I think this makes your design a part of our natural ethical surroundings. Some of my designs combine recycled leather and high quality of leather. all sourced ethically.

What are your passions? my passion is to create new things, leather manipulation. new challenges, to always learn more and to learn and research new technics. What obstacles did you face and overcome when you decided to become a fashion designer? fashion designers must be visionaries and be good at executing their vision from the concept to the final product and producing these lines. this can be challenging however using good technical skills in the process for the production, fabrics and textiles is always changing and I love keeping up to date with these factors as every day is a learning day. Just like any other industry, business can be challenging. having to use computer technology which is helpful for the designer and I am always developing these skills and keeping on top of new technology. I feel this is very Important to continually develop my skills. also reviewing costs of my items so they hit the markets at realistic prices. this can be a challenge but I love finding and sourcing new fabrics for my designs to make them cost effective as well as unique and elegant.

when we decided to open our own salon we really wanted to take a different approach to the way that we work. fairness and equality is something that is really important to us as a business/brand as well as an employer so making the salon gender neutral was the obvious start to us. not every man wants to wear their hair short the same as not every woman wants to wear their hair long so why should one gender pay more than the other for the same service? for us this fitted into the feeling we got when moving to Liverpool as we believe that this city is about fairness, equality and inclusion. our aim is to create a salon where people can come and feel good while creating their own image in a friendly, professional environment where they don’t feel judged. our brand and the industry we work in is heavily influenced by the fashion world which itself has so many different influences from

different backgrounds, cultures and lifestyles. michael franks Liverpool is owned by michael & darryl Redmond who took over in June 2017, the salon was formerly known as Prado, hair & Beauty up until october 2017 when we decided to rebrand and create a new image. michael has been working in the hairdressing industry for many years and has worked for some of the biggest hairdressing brands in the world including toni&guy and Rush. he has vast experience of working in some of the most respected and busiest salons in the west End and East End of London, manchester & Essex, some of his media work includes working at the 2012 London olympics as a hairdresser for american broadcasting company nBC our prices are based on hair length rather than gender. the salon are also proud to be official stockists of Label.m, L’oréal, highdefinition makeup, ghd, Balmain and Racoon International hair extensions. our aim is to provide a high quality,

professional service that ensures everyone leaves the salon with the style and look they desired. we also aim to make sure that our services are carried out within a relaxed, friendly and non-judgmental atmosphere. our team of continuously trained staff are available for free consultations seven days a week, please note that as we take our health & safety responsibilities to you so seriously, anyone wishing to book for a colour appointment will need to have a free skin test prior to having certain colour products applied to book an appointment, call 01513456148. Plus, every tuesday at michael franks, you can get 25% off colouring services!

TWISTED WHEEL COMES TO JACARANDA, LIVERPOOL ON 3 NOVEMBER Born in the backwaters of

Saddleworth in 2008, the young band, fronted by Jonny Brown, roared into the race of Indie rock with such anthems as ‘oh what have you done‘ ‘She’s a weapon’ ‘Lucy the Castle’ and ‘you stole the Sun’. their irrepressible energy and ability to deliver inspired rock’n’roll gained them the support slots with oasis, Kasabian, Paul weller, the Courteeners, the happy mondays and Ian Brown to name but a few, as well as sell-outs on their first uK tour the unlikely combination of elegance and raw inspiration, the familiar coupled with the random, make twisted wheel an undeniably popular act that delivers the goods in a way few bands can. the band has grown up and Brown’s song structures and lyrics are on

28

another level, beyond haggard experience now, worn in with wisdom and wit. as he says: ‘the song ‘Smash It up’ epitomised me. I set out to do things and was on the road comfortably and then I turned off and smashed it to bits. I get stuck into things with a passion and then I have to destroy it when the passion’s gone. mess everything up so that I’m free again to reinvent, create.’ twisted wheel has indeed rocked and rolled, been smashed up, fallen off the wagon, gone solo, kicked to the kerb – before finding its groove and getting back on it, full speed ahead. the oldham four spoker sees the return of twisted wheel’s original drummer adam Clarke, new members Richard allsopp ( guitar) harry Lavin (Bass) and Jonny Brown (guitar/Vocals)

on Sunday 30th September Liverpool’s Royal Court celebrated their 80th birthday in their own inimitable style. there were excerpts from some of the shows that we have come to know and love over the years including Brick up the mersey tunnels, our day out, Shirley Valentine and the Scouse nativity. a host of the Court’s favourite actors were joined by acts like the Christians and Les dennis in this tribute Liverpool’s People’s theatre. a packed audience watched the show

and enjoyed video messages from John Bishop, noddy holder and dame Judi dench. Before the show began a plaque was unveiled as a tribute to Sir Ken dodd. Sir Ken was a huge supporter of the theatre over the years and his work kept the building open throughout the 60s and 70s. Kevin fearon, Executive Producer at the Royal Court, said: “the build up to this building’s 80th birthday has been very interesting. Looking back

at shows from the past has made us all a bit more reflective and we have been a little bit humbled by some of the things that we have found. So many people have poured their hearts and souls into the theatre over the years and, although they all took different approaches, they all had the same aim – to entertain the people of Liverpool. Looking forward I think that as long as we keep that at the heart of what we do then there will be many more birthdays to celebrate.”

DANIEL LEWIS INTERVIEW

Why did you get into acting? I always dreamed of being an actor however I never pursued it until I was 26. growing up in a deprived area and having the group of friends I had, I was always conscious of what people said and thought. Before I was kicked out of school at 14, the only two subjects I enjoyed was P.E and drama. I used drama to show off to my classmates and try make everyone laugh with my voices, impressions and animated body movement. until one day a letter was sent to my mum from the head of drama stating I

34

was extremely talented and I could go very far in the performing arts industry. She also wanted me to audition for a huge theatre production outside of school and join her after school drama class. one of my biggest regrets was ripping that letter up and not taking that opportunity. I actually dedicated most of my life to boxing, starting at the age of 7. I was working towards a career as a professional boxer. In 2014 (age 24) I was training out of a professional gym with one of the best trainers in British

boxing. I was training and sparring with world champions everyday. I was working as a bus cleaner at the time and just a few weeks before my professional debut I slipped off a bus step. I seriously injured my lower back and after being rushed to hospital I asked the doctor "will I box again?". the doctor replied "I hope you'll walk again!" after months of intense therapy, using a wheelchair and then crutches. my boxing career was over before it had even started. I had slipped into a dark place mentally and was battling with depression and

gained a lot of weight. I remember one helped me quit drinking and drugs and night in the bathroom just bursting into actually got me addicted to a new tears in front of my fiancé saying "I'm drug...meditation! just not happy!". my fiancé said How has mindfulness changed your ️ "well...what will make you happy?". of ️ life? nervous and embarrassed course a little mindfulness has given me better and to say, I said "I want to be an actor!". more positive qualities in life. without hesitation and as straight as I'm more grateful. more compassionate. anything she said "then be an actor!"... more kind. more loving. more peaceful. I I immediately called my mum and said have more equanimity. I sleep better, I "mum I'm going to be an actor!" to eat better, I think better and I do better. which she screamed "I've b***dy told I'm more confident. I'm more driven and you this since you were a kid!" my mum determined. feed your mind with works in a hotel as a cleaner and the positivity and guess what you get?? day after I had told her I wanted to Positive outcomes! that's how the 'Law become an actor she called me up telling of attraction' works. me that hollywood actor, star of 'Reservoir dogs' & 'Pulp fiction' tim Roth was staying at her hotel whilst he was filming the BBC drama 'Reg'. She said to herself "I don't care if I lose my job" and she knocked on tim Roth's door explained her son was a huge fan and he's just started acting. I now have framed, a note from tim Roth wishing me luck with my career. my mum said on the phone "it's a sign so now you have to start acting!" 3 months later, January 5th 2016 I started an 'acting for Camera' course at Peter hunt's 'actup north' in Liverpool.acting is my therapy and it's a great way to channel all my emotions and experiences into my work. It makes me happy, it gives me such a thrill but more importantly it keeps me sane.

️ T ell us about being contacted by BAFTA two tears ago I wrote, produced, codirected and starred in a 5 minute short film called'thomas'. I played an inspiring young man with cerebral palsy. my only intention with this short film was to add to my showreel and hopefully show versatility. within weeks of being released on social media 'thomas' had thousands of views and an amazing response. I was recommended to enter 'thomas' into film festivals. I had a total of 9 'Best actor' nominations in 5 countries and I won 5 'Best actor' awards in 3 countries. I was then contacted by Bafta as one of the festivals I had won 'Best actor' at was a Bafta qualifying festival. Bafta congratulated and applauded my performance and wished me the best of luck with the feature length version of 'thomas'. unfortunately due to the dates of which the short film was released to when Bafta had received it, 'thomas' wasn't eligible.

W ️ hat was the turning point in your life? when I was signed off by the mental health team, a friend had gotten me a 6 week security job on the 'Pier head Village'. after losing everything and "hitting rock bottom" I used this opportunity to start afresh and the real me was born.I ️ What is your new project about and discovered the Law of attraction in all ️ who is involved? its glory and sensed my energies and the film is an all Liverpool film! vibes and delivered and attracted me to Liverpool cast and crew and filming in what I can only describe as my savour, and around Liverpool. I want this to be my guardian angel and now one of my something the city of Liverpool can be closest friends, 'walter'. proud of. Something people can relate to walter was visiting the event I worked each of the characters and a film that on and one day he stopped me and said the people of Liverpool actually feel a "hi, I'm walter do you mind if I join you part of. and chat?" he said "you seem to have a we are currently in development and go story and a sadness behind those eyes. into production in april 2019. I take inspiration from everyone I meet because I know one day their characteristics will inspire a future character in my scripts. DARREN VISION Resolving Conflict

serena williams lost the uS open

last month ... and may have lost some of her fans too. If you didn’t follow the story Serena had an outburst where she called the umpire a liar and a thief ... the umpire penalised her a full game and she went on to lose to the emerging talent of naomi osaka. make a note of that name because she will be around and winning for a good while. Back to Serena ... her coach had been coaching her from the side lines, which according to the rule book is not allowed ... technically it’s cheating. when this was noticed the umpire called her over and Serena said she had not seen the signals ... and declared loudly that she was not a cheat. Initially there was a punishment of a single point but the altercation continued ... Serena smashed her racket and went on to call the umpire a liar ... it was pretty heated

stuff ... ultimately she was penalised a full game and went on to lose the match. what seemed such a small misdemeanour had turned into a major incident. the rule was just there to ensure fair play. It’s one of those rules that is taken for granted ... like driving on the left hand side of the road or stopping at a red light. Everyone knows the rule ... so it’s mostly self enforcing. But what if ... what if the umpire had managed it differently? what if he had asked Serena to get her coach to stop ... or maybe put his hand over the microphone when she was about to boil over ... and say “if you calm yourself we can resolve this but if you carry on I will penalise you a full game”. that would have been fair warning. In the context of the minor breach of the rule a heated disagreement seemed unnecessary ... and what actually happened was a complete over reaction. Resolving conflict fairly is always a

good thing but surely avoiding conflict early ... heading it off at the pass ... is better. a good umpire, Referee or manager can often see when an incident is about happen ... not because they have a crystal ball or any psychic skills ... but because they have experience ... and have developed a knack for spotting a problem. If they step in at the right time ... sensitively ... they can stop a situation escalating. and usually they get the respect of the people around them for being fair and reasonable. Rules aren’t meant to be a complex maize designed to trip us up every step of the way ... it’s up to the person in charge to interpret them fairly, apply them fairly and do this without too much drama. Remember, fairness is respected... To find out methods or to discuss strategies you may want to develop in these areas, email darren@dasala.co.uk or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren. 37

RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SASSY MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO I love the holidays and although

it's trickier juggling work commitments – there is nothing I love more than spending time with michael & melodie without worrying about dashing them to dance, footie, netball or any other after school activity that always leaves me constantly racing against the clock! to spend quality time with them is what I work every hour I can for – and our holiday to menorca did just the trick recently! given how sociable the 3 of us are … we spent a week away in the sunshine without speaking to anyone but ourselves!!! days at the beach, water parks, playing ping pong and bat and ball, swimming and exploring a place we hadn’t been to before was just heaven! waking up to sunshine (and no 4am alarm every day!) was just perfect and I’m smiling now just thinking of those memories we made! with the 3 of us being adrenalin junkies – we also spent a slightly more hectic 3 days in thorpe Park – a long drive – but worth it for what we think are the best roller coasters in the Country! the rush from

38

going 0-80mph in 2 seconds (and no that’s not my driving there!) on a rollercoaster called “Stealth” is just insane! I think I have made them as crazy as I am with very little fear of anything … except of course … farmaggedon!!! yep, halloween is upon us for the scariest night of the year when my kids hang their head in shame as I show I’m not invincible and that I cry like a baby when chased by a clown with a chainsaw! Quite how mark Edwards and his team make this attraction even scarier every year I don’t know… all I’ll say is the maze this year nearly finished me off!!! however, it’s good to be scared now and again and face your fears – if you haven’t been before then definitely try it this october...farmaggedon.co.uk. also it is great to announce that I’ll be in panto at the Epstein this year playing the fairy in Snow white ... any excuse to don a pair of sparkly wings! going to be working with Kim woodburn as the wicked Queen who having met at the photo shoot, despite all the recent press, was nothing short of delightful!! It’s going to be fabulous to be back on stage this Christmas with the fantastic local talent mia molloy & Lewis Pryor and the funniest dame in the land michael Chapman. I have always been obsessed with disney – and when their ship disney magic docked in Liverpool … it was a delight to be asked once again to host the stage and give a great send off from our fabulous City for Cruise Liverpool’s event magic on the mersey! I actually got within touching distance of the ship this year … but unfortunately I was rumbled trying to be a stowaway… so better luck next time! mt favourite film of all time is grease and I cannot believe it is celebrating its 40th anniversary and it’s a film although I know off by heart that I will never tire of watching! Rossie and I had a fabulous night at the woodside drive in, Birkenhead hosting an anniversary showing of the film – and Rossie even duetted with me on ”Summer nights” definitely earning his place in the t-Birds!– but hey – life is for living!

What I love most about my profession I enjoy the artistry and variety. as a dermatologist, I always have a plan, but every procedure is different, its gratifying to have the education and training to be able to do which each patient needs and to attain the results that will make them happy. What accolades mean the most to you? Patient referrals mean the most to us - they tell us that we've earned your trust. Most outrageous medical myth I've heard many people still believe dramatic results can only be achieved through botox and fillers. How my profession has evolved In this profession there are some providers with limited education and expertise who claim to be aesthetic experts I refer to them as pretenders. I always tell patients to seek doctors on the gmC register, nothing can replace real education and expertise.

DR NYLA

How does your staff enhance your practice? my favourite part of practicing dermatology is that my staff and I consider our patients as part of our family. Being in practice for more than 15 years, it is truly wonderful to treat multipul generations, and what we define as the contemporary family. the everyday person. we feel that we're in the middle of an eyelash wave at the moment. It is practically part of a girls routine to put their eyelashes on before they leave the house!

TATTI LASHES Love the name, where did it come from? Charlotte: tatti Lashes is an old expression that my nan used to call me when I was a child. It is a Liverpool saying. It was used as an expression whenever a child was being cheeky or mischievous. we thought long and hard for the right brand name. this is obviously sentimental to us, so we decided to go with tatti Lashes. What makes your brand so unique? Charlotte: we feel that we have rejuvenated the eyelashes market by adding new eyelash materials and styles. we noticed a gap in the market and wanted to offer high quality at an affordable price for the everyday person. our eyelashes can be cleaned and reused up to 20 times. we feel that we have designed an eyelash for everybody as we now have over 40 styles. Eyelashes are such a contemporary accessory for

Who do you aim it at? Elliot: our eyelashes generate loyalty from a younger demographic but by offering a wider range we're also able to tackle new markets. globalisation is key to the brands success. obviously, we started as a Liverpool brand and it is important to us that we continue to play a significant role within our local market. we have quadrupled in size this year and from our last count, we have now sold our product in 82 countries. this is something we're really proud of. How have you grown over the last few years and where do you see yourself going? Elliot: It is crazy to think that only a year a go we were operating out of the basement of a beauty salon. we now have huge warehouse spaces, offices and a fully committed team behind us.

a large proportion of our revenue comes from the

united States, particularly California. we have been lucky enough to capitalise on celebrity exposure. nicki minaj, Khloe Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Cardi B, Paris hilton Christina aguilera and a variety of uK/uS Reality tV stars have all worn tatti Lashes.

we feel like this is just the start for us. we want to be as big offline as we are online (news coming soon!). we also want to grow our presence in the uS. according to google, we're now the leading eyelash brand in the whole of Europe (online). we want to take it further by tackling new territories. What is the attraction of your brand? Charlotte: Being vibrant, trendy and understanding the current trends within the eyelash market are key to how the brand is personified. What’s the thing you love the most about your company? Charlotte: having an amazing team around us who have been with us from the start of the journey. Sometimes, we take a step back and reflect on how far the business has grown in such a short space of time. 43

56

and thanks to Liverpool City Council’s adult Education Service, it’s a dream that’s getting evercloser to becoming reality. danielle, 30,said: “to get into midwifery you need at least a grade C gCSE in maths and English,” said danielle. “I’ve already got my maths, so I needed an evening class so I could get my English. Because of childcare issues, I also needed to study at a venue that is quite close to home.” danielle began her studies at nearby Ellergreen Children’s Centre. the hardworking mum has attended regularly, completed all her homework and home study assignments. It’ also given her that ‘can-do’ spirit. “It’s given me the confidence to go forward,” said danielle. “I have now been accepted onto an access course for midwifery as long as I get my gCSE.” “It’s also given me the confidence to know that I can juggle a job, a busy home life and the demands of the course work.” “It’s been a lot of hard work but I have been supported every step of the way by my family and my tutors,” said danielle. “It’s been a really worthwhile experience that hopefully means I will be able to fulfil my dream of becoming a midwife.”

N ICK MULVEY Musician nick mulvey opens up about

his new album wake up now,. he surmises, “naturally, this record reflects all that's been happening in my life recently, as a man and as an artist, trying to answer a call to be a better person. the world seems so lacking in respect for the true value of life, for the planet, and for social justice. But seeds of hope are everywhere." mulvey broke out from his former band (Portico Quartet) in 2011, for the exquisite, mercury Prize-nominated 2014 debut, first mind. that album was celebrated for the way it combined expressive songwriting with everything from west-african rhythms to electronic dissonance. It operated in a space that required repeat listens to peel back its varied layers, but also worked nicely on mainstream radio, becoming a mainstay on Radio 1 where its intricacies didn’t overbear the hummable melodies. Spurred on by a solid sense of groove, the likes of Cucurucu, fever to the form, and the lullabic meet me there sidestepped the conventional, and followed a road that his immediate peers had left untrodden. here was a sensationally gifted guitarist, delivering a challenging but wholly rewarding debut album. what you won’t know, chiefly because it remained hidden under the surface of that album’s lyrics, is that nick was deep into a journey of self-enquiry

58

that continues to this day. wake up now, his remarkable second album, tackles that journey head on and brings those themes including impending fatherhood, clearly to the surface. Early advice came from david Bowie in the form of a dream. “I vividly recall a dream where Bowie was telling me exactly where to place my fingers on the guitar neck- new chord shapes to play. you’re not going to argue you with him, are you? I thought I’d give it a try and right there and then a new song pretty much wrote itself. amazing!” for all the support however, the process wasn't always easy and much of 2016 was spent in frustration and impatience, caught up in his own selfcriticism. "It wasn't until the late summer and the birth of my son, when all things musical were pushed to the periphery of my life as I supported my wife, that paradoxically the artistic breakthroughs started coming." with the album firmly relegated to a second priority, mulvey began to have the insights that would shape wake up now. "Between washing the sheets and the nappies I started to know what to do. I realised that I had striven to be a perfectionist and that I needed to get freer in my creativity. I saw that I

would do this by recording in a very live way, with real musicians all playing together in a circle, welcoming all that sonic spillage and imperfection. I saw that I needed to work quickly and welcome spontaneity." the result is an album that fizzes with vitality and variety, driven by lyrical themes that go to the heart of what it means to be alive. this record is beautiful in its simplicity, a tonic for the times, and, above all, deeply musical.

Nick: “Wake up Now is an album I always dreamed of making. Me and the band worked together in a spontaneous way- not planning too much, and letting the arrangements emerge by themselves.

ED ITOR’ S LAST WORD

Lifestyle

It’s my birthday month! And what a wonderful month is in store. I will www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk be stepping out in style with Liverpool Fashion Week, one of the editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk highlights of the year. I am really looking forward to yet another @amandalifestyle stunning array of collections from our talented pool of designers. There’s something for everyone of all sizes and ages so come and take a look. It’s at the iconic British Music Experience where music and fashion really are our passion. I am encouraging our models to wear flat shoes instead of heels. As part of my on going self love campaign I believe that wearing heels on the catwalk can cause anxiety for models fearful of toppling over. Walking in flatter shoes will therefore give them more confidence. Also this month I am running my popular mindfulness, meditation and positive healing retreats with mind coach Darren Lawrence. Read his column inside. I am expanding these trips to singapore and Bali in 2019 so please get in touch if you want to experience a magical and luxury five star trip. More travel is on the cards as I venture further north to check out The Lancaster House hotel for the weekend. I’ll be taking the kids and even the dog. It’s so refreshing that we can plan a family weekend away for all the family. I am looking forward to long country walks, steaming hot bubble baths and glorious English pub food. I was recently contacted by a business colleague who was praising Lifestyle magazine for its consistency. We have outlived every other independent publication in the city and I am proud of running the business for over ten years. We have a unique business, not only can businesses advertise with us, but I can assist with public relations on a national scale. And of course I offer sponsorship for all my high profile events, The nominations open at the end of the month for our 10th anniversary Liverpool Lifestyle Awards in the spring 2019. 2nd March to be precise, save the date!! We really are number one and going strong! Don’t forget to put your clocks back as well on 28th October, That’s an extra hour in bed on the eve of my birthday. Even more reason to celebrate!
