September ISSUE 89 A note from our editor...

Hello lovely Lifestyle readers! H ello new season. I’m really looking forward to the next few months. Autumn has always been my favourite time of the year, I love woolly jumpers and big boots – a wardrobe staple for me. And the cliché of walking though crispy fallen leaves with my family, always appeals.

Speaking of my family, from here on in, I am on the countdown till my boys go to school next September. This, I am not looking forward to at all, never before have I been so aware of, “tempus fugit.” It feels like yesterday when they were new born, and now they are walking, talking little people, who I absolutely adore. I am extremely privileged to work from home, and lucky to live in such close proximity to Liverpool town centre, where it seems, there are free family events almost every week that we can attend. The Pirate show at the Albert Dock, open air theatre at exchange flags and visiting the dinosaurs at the natural history museum, to name but a few. So from now on, I 4

am on a mission, to spend as much time with my family as I can, to not waste a minute, to have fun with them and enjoy watching them experience this wonderful city of ours and the world around them. Lots of love,

Joy x Joy Lewis, Editor www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk Email: joykinsedge@aol.com

can smell if you start lying in your act. There is an honesty in this show that people will appreciate.” He carries on that, “It’s about co-habiting and how it affects you. I talk about my partner. The show is about my life, so he has to be in it. I didn’t want to start lying and saying I still live on my own in Stretford. My partner doesn’t necessarily like being part of the show, but I said to him, ‘Look, it’s paying the bills. See those shoes you’re wearing? Comedy bought them, so stop moaning! The show is about manning up.” Alan proceeds to explain the title of the show. “I called it, ‘Yap, Yap, Yap!’ because there’s a lot of waffle out there. With blogs and Twitter, everyone has an opinion nowadays. I can’t believe I’ll be waffling on stage for two hours – I’m adding to it. It’s my own fault!” The comic has already been warming up the show, and he says that, “It’s had great feedback. I’ve been doing it on and off for the last six months and I think, ‘This is actually quite good’. Now I can’t wait to get out on the road for the real deal.” The good news is, even if you can’t make it along to a live show, you’ll still be able to enjoy “Yap, Yap, Yap!” Alan will be recording a brand new live DVD of the show at the Hammersmith Apollo on Friday 25th September. It is due for release by Universal Pictures (UK) in the autumn. I have known Alan for many years, and the lovely thing about him is that despite his very high profile, he remains the same really grounded and lovely person that he has always been. “Fame is very nice – I’d never take it for granted. You get lots of great opportunities. The other day I was asked to present a Pride of Britain Award, and that was great. “And I also get marvellous presents. So if the fans who are coming to the show could bring me some awful wine to put in my globe on the chat show, that would be very much appreciated!”

touring – it keeps me out of mischief! This is the biggest tour I’ve ever done.” Alan, previously responsible for such successful live shows as “Tooth Fairy” and “Spexy Beast,” is really pleased to be undertaking a tour once again. “I love live comedy,” he beams. “Sometimes the politics of doing the chat show and booking guests can be frustrating. And occasionally you’ll have a dud guest with nothing to say. “But when it’s just you on stage with a mic in front of lots of people who have come specifically to see you, it’s fantastic. You’re the boss. I get such a buzz on stage. It’s a complete adrenalin rush. When you dream up new material and think, ‘Great, I can add that to the set,’ it’s a wonderful feeling. If it works, a new joke always brings a smile to my face. It’s such a thrill.” Alan has a massive and loyal fanbase, which is mobilised whenever he tours. “Some venues have sold out within five minutes,” the comic reveals. “People have apparently been sleeping outside to get tickets – oh please, stop it! That’s sweet, but unnecessary. “With arena shows, the material doesn’t evolve. You don’t want to take the gamble of trying out new stuff in front of 12,000 people. And if you lose the room at an arena, you can’t get it back because it’s so big. Putting a show on in a theatre, everyone there feels they have had a unique night that won’t happen anywhere else. When you’re on stage, the audience transports you and you almost go into a trance. These people have paid good money to see you, and you can’t let them down. If they’ve had a crap day, they just want to go out and have a laugh – and it’s your responsibility to deliver. You want to perform for them because they’re so lovely.” So what subjects will Alan be discussing in “Yap, Yap, Yap!”? “This show is very personal. It’s a gamble including so much personal stuff, but it pays dividends. The more personal stuff you put in, the more people go ‘Aaah!’ Also, the audience

n the middle of my interview with Alan Carr, a very loud police siren starts wailing in the background. Quick as a flash, the comedian jokes that, “I’m so in demand, even the police want me,” before adding with a laugh: “Or maybe they’ve seen my act and want to arrest me!” This is typical of the quick-witted humour of one of the finest comics currently at work in this 10

SQUARE PEGS CREATIVE LAUNCH KIDS' EVENT 'SQUARE PEGS CARNIVAL TRAVELLING THE IMAGINATION' Constellations, 37-39 Greenland Street, Liverpool • Saturday 12th September 2015 • 11am-5pm

magination will take you everywhere with Square Pegs steering the journey, bringing a day of workshops, activities and stalls to the heart of Liverpool's creative hub. The creative collaboration which began with writing for children, are celebrating their first book, 'Lula's Magic Sister' by bringing a day of workshops and activities to Constellations, in art, performance and writing for little artists. Whatever age, they got it covered. While 'the turntables might wobble' little beastie boys and girls won't be put off as they grab a soul tambourine and shake it on down to interactive kid-friendly hip-hop, soul, funk and jazz. Glitter, and shine will spark imagination in the blanket fort; the perfect snuggly setting for immersive storytelling. And what with everything from painting, craft and screen printing for miniPicassos to multi-sensory circus skills' workshops for the darer-devils, no creative stone is left unturned.

If art ain't their thing, then allow Square Pegs to unleash the inner wild child with natural den building, the perfect activity for problem solvers. After a session of pure creativity, young minds can unwind and enjoy a flick through their modern and vintage library, or continue the role play with Peaches and Cream face painting, or by dressing up in Square Pegs' theatre garb. Not only will parents delight in seeing their little ones learning through play, but they'll also enjoy a peruse around the child-centred artisan stalls selling special clothes, toys and gifts for special little people. Whatever their artistic preference, the stage is set for a day of magic, inspiring young minds through the arts. The event is free but some activities carry a small charge, operating on a first come, first serve basis. 15

After the success in London the Oktoberfest is now heading to Liverpool to share and spread the joy and fun of the traditional German Oktoberfest. For 5 days in October we will set up our party tent at Exchange Flags and open the doors to a world of lederhosen, dirndls, Schnitzels, Oktoberfest Beer, German Schlager and lots of happy people to share this with. Inside the tent our guests will be introduced to the true German hospitality and atmosphere. We wish to give our guest a genuine experience of Germany outside of Germany and therefore we serve delicious German food. We have also brewed our own Oktoberfest Beer (and transported it all the way from Bavaria) which is a fresh golden lager with a touch of sweetness and a strong and slightly bitter aftertaste of the hops. Our Lederhosen/Dirndl shop will be open, where our guests can rent or buy their very own outfit. In short: We deliver everything to bring the true German Oktoberfest spirit to Liverpool and we are looking forward to share it with our guests. On stage, his stand-up tours have been seen by over 1.5 million people and on the television he has hosted Channel 4’s 8 out of 10 cats for the past decade. Quite simply he is the UK’s hardest working comedian. His latest tour, Funny Business is coming to a town near us, Warrington, this September. Funny business is your eleventh tour show. How have you continued to be so prolific? There’s no secret, really. A key part of it is the way in which I work. For some comedians, creating a show is very much a case of having a flash of inspiration and then building a show around that one idea. My process isn’t like that at all. For this tour I will have probably written in the region of a thousand jokes, but only use about 250. I think the trick to this job, if there is one, is to be writing constantly. Chuck Close once said “Inspiration is for amateurs, I just get to work” – I think that’s a great attitude to have. How do you whittle that original 1000 or so jokes down to the right number for a two hour show? That’s the audience’s call. If a joke doesn’t get a laugh onstage, then I can’t use it. I think I have a better hit-rate now compared to when I first started, but I still have to test all my jokes at warmup gigs before I can consider putting them into the tour show. Luckily, I think audiences are quite consistent - if it works in front of thirty people, it will usually work in front of 3000. Will it be exactly the same show every night? I like to find a balance between the guaranteed laughs of written stuff and off-the-cuff improvisation. The improv is great because that’s the stuff I’ve not heard - that’s what keeps the 20

tour fresh for me. Asking a comic to improvise a whole show is like asking a magician to do real magic. You’ve got to have a show ready, just in case no one wants to join in. Does Funny Business have a theme? Yes, the theme is wanting people to like you by telling jokes. Same as every stand-up show I think. Does that extend to critics? Just as much as anyone else I suppose. There’s a great quote from Keith Tynan: “A critic is a man who knows the way but can’t drive the car”. That seems pretty accurate to me, but in the end it’s very much a binary thing: either you laugh or you don’t. You can’t please everyone.

You often joke about supposedly “taboo” topics onstage. Why is that? Comedy is all about building up tension and then the release of that pressure. That’s what a laugh is, the pressure valve bursting. Talking about taboo topics is a fast way to build tension and the more tension, the more laughs. I’d also say that one of my favourite sounds in the world is laughter turning into shock. Laughter is instinctive – you don’t make an intellectual decision about what you laugh at, it’s like a reflex. After you’ve laughed, that’s when the moral compass kicks in and you start to wander “should I be laughing at that?” But by then it’s too late, you already have.

Have you ever had a bad experience with a fellow celebrity you’ve joked about? No, people are generally great about it. People I’ve made awful jokes about come up and say hello and are fine with it. I think that’s probably because my material is so obviously just jokes – verbal constructs designed to get a laugh. It’s different for other comics. If Michael McIntyre or John Bishop - not that they would – said something offensive about someone you’d think they really meant it, whereas with me I think it’s pretty obvious I don’t.

Is there anything you won’t joke about? It all comes down to intent - there's no point being made in my shows, I just want to entertain. I do worry that people sometimes aren’t taking things how I want them to, but it’s about context. They’re paying members of a comedy audience, it’s not like I’m just going up to them in the street. Having said that, if you're going to approach a difficult topic it has to be a funny enough joke to justify bringing it up. The pay-off has to outweigh the risk. Do you worry that sometimes you will offend people? Not really. If you believe in free speech, you have to allow people to say things you don’t like – that’s the whole point. If you say someone is “offended”, what you’re really saying is that they’re feelings got hurt. So what? That doesn't put you in the right. If you’re not laughing, you can just stop listening. That’s absolutely fine. You came to stand-up comparatively late at the age of 26. Was that a daunting experience? Not as daunting as getting up at 6am to go to work every day! When I first started out, I just remember having lots of fun to be honest. There was less of an industry back then so it was just about doing stand-up purely for the fun of it, not as any kind of means to an end. I feel incredibly lucky to do what I do. I think that’s the reason I’ve worked so hard over the past ten years or so, the guilt that somehow this isn’t a real job. Did you always want to be a stand-up? I didn’t realise it was an option. My dream as a child was to play at Wimbledon. The closest I’ve got so far is watching Andy Murray win it, which I think is probably good enough.

ponsored by Alpha Business Products, the day saw first team stars Gareth Barry, Steven Naismith and John Stones swinging their clubs alongside Everton Ambassadors Graeme Sharp, Graham Stuart and Ian Snodin at the picturesque surroundings of one of the region’s finest golf courses. An afternoon of golf in the glorious sunshine was followed by team presentations and a three course dinner as well as a variety of evening entertainment including a Q&A with the Everton Ambassadors and Joe Royle. A raffle and auction including exclusive Everton and signed items also took place with the day’s events raising over £12,500 for the charity. Speaking ahead of officially tee-ing off the golf day, Toffees midfielder Gareth Barry said, “A lot of us in the squad are keen golfers and we’re always happy to pick up our clubs and show our support for Everton in the Community at this annual event. Hopefully everyone will give generously throughout the day and we’ll be able to raise a significant amount of money to enable the charity to help even more people throughout the region.” Upon completing the course Blues legend Graeme Sharp echoed Barry’s comments, “It’s been a fantastic day so far in wonderful

I’d like to thank all the staff at Formby Hall who played a massive part in ensuring the day ran smoothly and also a big thank you to everyone who took part. LIFESTYLE MONTHLY’S NEW MONTHLY COLUMNISTS BAY TV’S JAY AND ELLIE; WILL BE KEEPING US UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE ENTERTAINMENT AND MUSICAL HAPPENINGS IN AND AROUND LIVERPOOL.

September – kids back in school, house spider season in full force, students of the city are back robbing our traffic cones, and the shops start stocking Christmas crackers. BUT do not fret there is still a feast of amazing entertainment to be found in the best city in the world and it’s our job to tell you where, when and what is going on. With summer slowly fading we all need a bit of a giggle, the Liverpool Comedy Festival couldn’t have timed it better. Now in its 14th year one of the city’s best loved festivals returns bigger & better. Everyone from Alan Carr, Dave Spikey & Nina Conti to our very own Pauline Daniels, Tina Malone & impressionist Les Gibson are on the bill. It takes place in various venues across the city and all kicks off on the 18th September. Visit www.liverpoolcomedyfestival.com for more info. Talking of comedy you have to go and see ‘Bouncers’ at the Royal Court. Michael Starke & co play four doormen on The Grafton – you can imagine the fun they have. Audiences were in stitches last time, and it’s a cert to get rid of those summer blues. It runs from the 4th September until 3rd October.

If it’s live music you are after then we will direct you to one man. He goes by the name of Louis Berry, he was named this year’s GIT award one to watch, he’s from right here

in Liverpool and is about to take the world by storm. He told us on our Juice FM show that ‘things are very polite at the moment in the music world and I’m here to shake it up a bit’. He couldn’t have but it better. His music is fresh and ferocious and hits you right between the eardrums, forcing you to listen to what this ‘lonely rebel with a very revolutionary mind’ has to say. His single 25 reasons was an anthem of summer 2015 and his debut EP rebel is waiting for you right now. Go and check it out, and go and see Liverpool’s newest rock & roll star live at East Village Arts Club on Saturday 26th September. Don’t forget keep up to date with all of the latest event, gig & music goings on by following us on twitter @TheGuideLpool and listen in to our Juice show Sunday’s 10pm when we get to shout about the latest in emerging local music. Go and enjoy exploring our city, its special, and we will speak to you in next month’s Lifestyle mag.

BREAKOUT REVIEW BY JOY LEWIS

T

here is a new activity in town – Breakout. It’s a live escape game where between 2 and 5 people are locked in a room together. A series of puzzles and mysteries need to be solved to escape. The clues are everywhere you look, some above, some below – and all are trapped within a padlocked box. To make it even more interesting you are against the clock, 60 minutes doesn’t half go quick when you and 4 of your fellow players are shouting numbers and riddles at each other. Breakout is the crystal maze for 2015, it’s exciting, adrenalin pumping good fun. We tried the Wanted room, which is a saloon bar. However if the Wild West doesn’t take your fancy there are other rooms available. Without revealing too much (lest I spoil the fun of the surprise) we were given a padlocked box outside of the room, this was our first puzzle to solve, we had to work out the combination and open the box to our second clue. Within minutes we were overexcited children shouting riddles and numbers at each other. The thrill of each time a padlock was opened didn’t dwindle a jot and the almost utopic feeling of working out a riddle is quite unrivalled. We did manage to escape – hurrah, and with time to spare I might add. But don’t get complacent, in some cases it was sheer luck that we managed to work out the clue to opening a few boxes. And because not everybody manages to Breakout, when we left undefeated we felt like we could take on the world! Breakout is the funnest game in Liverpool, I grew up watching the Crystal Maze and like so many others I always wanted to try it. This is so much better, much more heart thumping and rather more difficult. Anyone can try it, no fitness level is required just a modicum of common sense, a flair for finding clues and the ability to work as a team.

Trench coats are once again a must have for early Autumn. Perfect for when the first chill hits the air but light enough for when the sun makes a peep from behind the clouds, they make an ideal September wardrobe update. Choose a bold pink colour for a fun afternoon out, or go all Bardot and pose in a chic, sexy, honey coloured mac. Wear with heels or nothing at all. It's entirely up to the individual how cheeky to make this new seasons must have.

Review by Editor, Joy Lewis.

hese days’ time is a commodity, for one reason or another everybody is in a hurry. Rushing to pick the kids up, speeding home after work to make dinner for the family, racing at the weekend to get all the jobs done that didn’t get even started during the week. What wouldn't we give for a little time to ourselves? Time enough to relax and have a massage – that would be sheer bliss. Which is why when a new company Urban Massage, who offers a professional spa – quality massage delivered direct to the door, offered me the opportunity to give their new service a whirl, I couldn’t say yes fast enough. Urban Massage is a super simple but incredibly effective idea has just launched in Manchester and the surrounding areas. All that you need to do is visit their website, and a date and time for your treatment and a therapist. There are all different types of massage available from deep tissue sports to calming and even pregnancy massage. Every therapist is fully qualified and brings their own massage table with them. All you need to do is relax and wait for them at home to arrive. I chose to have a deep tissue back massage. No, it’s not for the faint hearted, but I am a mum of 3 year old twins who are seriously heavy, so I needed this. Not being used to having massages I was a little apprehensive, however I was immediately put at ease by the therapist who took me through the treatment. It lasted 60 minutes, afterwards I literally felt like a new woman. Once again I was able to move without creaking, and my lower back didn’t scream out every time I moved, and that night I slept like a baby. Heaven. Will I use the service again? 100% yes I will, the service is slick, incredibly convenient, highly professional and at a cost below that of visiting a local spa. CITY LONDON CHIC STYLE!

L

iving in Devon in the beautiful countryside, I do love to go back to my home town of Essex and see all the latest fashions.

I recently went to London for a trip, and was very much captured by the bravery and self image that they embrace, like many city folk do. The over all style feel I saw during the daytime: was light pastel clothes, pumps, sleek hair or boho styled, and nude, undone on purpose make up, no huge lashes, no majorly defined thick eyebrows. Always with a bright nail shellac colour, matching toes and fingers of course. The evening: with colour blocking clothes, heels, hair up, and a touch more eyeliner and a lip colour added to nude make up. I do love the way I saw women, and men (men very much their hair, and clothes) taking pride in their appearances and dared to be different. In the celeb world I see very much 'Ella Eyre' , 'sienna Miller' and 'Josh Bowman' to be an icons of the London City style image. I have made over the gorgeous Tia Danielle to show off the ladies City Chic look.

THE GREAT GAME

GET READY FOR RUGBY FEVER TO SWEEP THE NATION THIS MONTH, AS ENGLAND HOSTS THE WORLD'S THIRD LARGEST SPORTING EVENT, THE RUGBY WORLD CUP ON SEPTEMBER 18 TO 31 OCTOBER. Rugby never fails to capture the imagination of its spectators, and this relatively young tournament has very quickly become extremely popular all over the world. Rugby is seen as a true gentleman's sport, with its tough nature played in a hard but fair manner. Perhaps it's favoured because there is 80 minutes of aggressive battle were top athletes bounce off each other then shake hands at the end all in the name of fair play that appeals? Or could it be the respect these warriors show each other and the referee that makes us think of the ancient days of chivalry? Regardless of the whys, this season embrace a rugby lead wardrobe with a vintage "old boy" rugby shirt either dug out from the bottom of the closet or unwrapped new from the plastic, and let the inner warrior roar.

he Great British Bake off is back. The next few months will be filled with cakes, bakes and frangipane. We will watch in trepidation soggy bottoms falling apart, and fear the look of disappointment in Paul Hollywood’s glacial blue eyes when he discovers under proved bread. This is what we have been waiting for, that most quintessential of British pastimes; baking, eating and politely judging others. Paul Hollywood has been with the show since its inception 5 years ago. A baker from Liverpool, Paul initially refused to follow in his father’s footsteps and assume the baking mantel. Persuaded to change his mind, however, Hollywood has gone on to become one of the nations most treasured celebrity chefs.

It’s been quite a journey for the Merseyside lad, from the smaller stage of the family bakery to selling out concert venues across the country with a hands-on baking gig. Prior to facing crowds of adoring fans, how does he feel about the upcoming tour?

The baking profession may be of long and humble tradition, but Paul Hollywood, with his sharp blue eyes, distinguished silver hair and glamorous surname, was always destined for a rise to stardom. After making his name on the remarkably popular BBC show The Great British Bake Off the 47 year-old is now gearing up to take his talents on the road as part of a UK tour.

Hollywood’s desire to pass on the knowledge perhaps hankers back to his own baking beginnings. His knack with a rolling pin comes from a flour-filled childhood. Mum looked after the pastry side, the apple pies, the biscuits, he tells us. My dad looked after the yeast side. So with the two of them as my parents I became a hybrid.

I have really enjoyed doing demonstrations for the BBC Good Food show, so I’m not unfamiliar with the format. This was my chance to do something on my own though, and it’s like a kind of rock and roll tour! The whole idea of the tour is to pass on my knowledge, what I’ve learnt over the years to people who are struggling or have problems with their baking.

Although the professional chef was brought up around the craft, and cites good friend Tom Kerridge as an inspiration, not to mention Michel Roux Junior who he describes as quite frankly, a God, the route to the very top of his profession was perhaps a lonely one. A younger Hollywood had to look to old cookbooks rather than motivating head chefs to help him break the mould. My family have been my inspiration throughout my whole career. But one of my problems was that when I moved into these big flash restaurants to go and work there I was head of the tree; I was the head baker and there was no one higher than me who I could ask for advice. In baking, it seems that sometimes looking backwards can be the way forward. So I was reading the old bakery books, and getting inspiration from what was going on in baking a hundred years ago, or 200 years ago.

44

That’s where I’d get my inspiration. I couldn’t get it from other bakers because they are almost doing the same thing. The George Clooney of baking as Johnathan Ross described him, has been kneading dough for around thirty years. But when the last loaf is taken out the oven and the apron comes off, what is it that Hollywood likes to do to relax? I really enjoy walking the dog, he smiles. We have a Labrador called Rufus “ I named him after [comedian] Rufus Hound, who’s a friend of mine. That’s my relaxation walking Rufus or going out for a ride on my motorbike, it’s a sports bike though, I hate Harleys. What about hanging out with Mary Berry? Do the pair get on as well off screen as they do on it? Working with her is such a laugh. I do get the giggles a lot. Mary is lovely. I see a lot of her outside work, and am very fond of her and her whole family.

T

his September, the Soil Association is launching the biggest ever Organic September, the UK’s celebration of all things organic. With more people looking for healthy, ethical and local food, Organic September makes it even easier to eat and live well - with inspiring tips and recipes using good ingredients. Swapping to organic food has huge benefits for people, animal welfare and the environment. People will be encouraged to ‘Organic’ their September by making a small change to their everyday shopping to help our planet. Last year, scientific evidence found nutritional differences in organic vegetables, fruit and cereal crops. Organic farms are havens for wildlife, with more species of birds, bees, butterflies and wildflowers than non-organic farms. By switching to organic bacon or pork, more pigs will keep their curly tail and stay with their mother for much longer; by switching to organic eggs, more hens would have access to grassland and not be at risk of painful beak trimming. Together, each of these small changes can make a big difference for generations to come. The Soil Association will help people plan their small changes with an exciting interactive and social media campaign featuring the Organic30 list and calendar. Introducing tons of tips for easy items to swap throughout the month – from swapping to organic milk to brewing an organic cuppa for colleagues – the Organic 30 list helps people plan their small changes. There will also be prizes up for grabs throughout the month. Helen Browning, Soil Association chief executive said: “With wildlife in decline over the last 46 half century, Organic September is a fantastic

opportunity to let people know why organic farming is more important than ever. With each small change we make – like choosing organic milk or butter, or switching to organic eggs, we are helping secure a better future for animal welfare, our bees and other pollinators, and of course, our neglected soils.”

5 TOP TIPS FOR ORGANIC SEPTEMBER 1. Switch to organic milk. Organic milk is naturally different - no system of farming produces milk with higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids or a healthier balance of omega-6. 2. Eat less, but better, organic meat. Organic animals enjoy the very highest welfare standards of any farmed animals. They are fed a GM free diet and graze on organic pasture where pesticides are severely restricted. 3. Switch to organic beauty. There are currently no legal standards for organic beauty so some products may be labelled 'organic' even if it doesn't always stand true. Look for the Soil Association symbol to make sure that what you put on your body is as important as what goes in it. 4. Sign up for an organic veg box. Organic farms support 50% more wildlife than non-organic farms, so you're not just treating yourself to the best of British produce, you're also helping to protect bees, birds and butterflies. 5. Brew an organic tea or coffee. Organic tea and coffee is grown without the use of artificial pesticides and fertilisers. This not only reduces the farmers' exposure in the developing world, it also means healthier soils and more habitats for birds and wildlife.

CLUBBED DEATH A

ccording to the broadsheets lately the number of nightclubs in Britain has almost halved in ten years, from 3,144 in 2005 to 1,733 in 2015. The financial crisis, the smoking ban, the gentrification of city centres and the ensuing rise of its Johnny-come-lately noise abatement Gestapo have all been cited as the cause, depending upon which paper you read. These have all, no doubt, played a part, but I would point to some more direct and obvious reasons. First are the 24 hours drinking laws which came into action, funnily enough, exactly ten years ago, on 24th November 2005. Nightclubs were invented because people needed somewhere to carry on drinking after the pubs shut. If the pubs don’t shut then you don’t need clairvoyant powers to foresee the future for nightclubs.

52

Secondly, clubs were allowed to paint themselves into a musical corner some time ago. A bar DJ has to play to keep their audience from moving on to the next bar and so will play accordingly. A club DJ’s audience have paid to get in and will hang around until closing time expecting to get their money’s worth. Club DJs therefore have license to be much more ‘creative’, as they would say, or ‘self-indulgent’, as anyone else might say. Give them enough rope and the DJ will often hang himself, without any help from Morrissey. Whereas bar customers can be seen drifting away if they are not satisfied; club customers just won’t show up again next week and their custom is lost, usually for good. It is too late for the club DJ to be able to do anything about it by then, whereas a bar DJ can react immediately if what they are playing isn’t working. Thirdly, and in my opinion the most relevant factor, is the sea change in our general social culture brought about by digital technology, social media and the internet. Quite simply; young people with raging hormones don’t need weekend cattle markets any more in order to find a partner or even temporary satisfaction when the whole wide world is literally at their fingertips.

Self Esteem THE TRUTH OF WHO YOU ARE PART 2

S

elf-esteem is the ability to esteem ourselves and to enhance how we feel about ourselves when we chose to. Having just arrived back in the UK after a month travelling around Asia, friends asked me what stands out most about the trip, I reply that the contentment of the people I met, who regardless of their possessions or lack thereof they have an abundance of joy and pleasure in their lives and feel good about themselves. They don’t attach feeling good to what they have. So how can we feel good more often, feel good about who we are? We can work with our subconscious mind to help make us feel better. Our subconscious mind at times works against us due to demanding statements we force on ourselves, statements like I HAVE TO, I MUST, I’VE GOT TO, I NEED! Our mind then can accuse us of not being good enough or committed to something, I covered this in the August issue. So we have to NOTICE and STOP our minds working against us and REPLACE what it says. This is how we do that. Ask yourself the question, what do you CHOOSE for you. In your mind you would say “I CHOOSE to focus more on my family as an example, not I HAVE TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH MY FAMILY. Just using I CHOOSE creates better feelings in our body and mind. This stops the mind from working against us and reduces any accusational mind talk. As you can imagine our minds are tremendously complex and without overly simplifying things, our internal talk has a real impact on how we feel, so it needs to be managed. Try this simple exercise in your mind moving forward. 1. NOTICE any demanding statements you put on yourself, 2. STOP the process 3. REPLACE with what you CHOOSE for you.

sometimes talk to our selves; you know the little voice inside our head. Yes we all have one. The criticisms, the judgements and the accusations we can put on ourselves from time to time. NOTICE, STOP and REPLACE. How much are you worth?? How much is the breath you take worth? Insurers tell me that your body parts are worth a fortune, how about £250,000 for your eyesight, £200,000 for your hearing, £62,500 for a thumb, £125,000 for hand, £250,000 for your feet, £300,000 for a leg. I think you get the point. What price would you put on your creativity, your love, your thoughts, your compassion, your friendship, your life? It’s safe to say that all the money in the world can’t pay for an extra breath. Ask your mind to work with you not against you, and train yourself to accept your choices without judgements to allow yourself to feel free. If you require support or questions answering get in touch via, email darren@dasala.co.uk or twitter @dasalaldarren

The All-New Ford GAlAxy

T

he Galaxy is Fords biggest people carrier. Its new updated body and interior has been long overdue to the much beleaguered people carrier. The interior is a little more spacious and refined with added tech advanced to ensure a more luxurious travel for all seven passengers. The new model also features the brand’s new “face” which includes a fierce looking grille and slimmer headlamps. Inside all seven seats are now full-size, enabling families to easily switch between seating or load space with a segment-first feature that raises third-row seats at the push of a button..

Comfort is enhanced for front seat passengers with massaging Ford Multi-Contour Seats; and for rear seat passengers with integral link rear suspension that offers a smoother, quieter ride. The all-new Galaxy also supports drivers in town and on the highway with advanced technologies including Ford’s new Intelligent Speed Limiter, Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, and Glare-Free Highbeam. Price tag is £30,000 for the mid-range model

NEW GENERATION A-CLASS

T

he Mercedes A-class has had a mid-life face lift. The frumpy styling has been ditched and replaced with a much sleeker, harder, meaner body. Finally it’s ready to take on others in its class the Audi A3, VW Golf and BMW 1 Series. Not only is the new A-Class far better looking than its old self, but the interior has been hugely improved too. It now has instrument cluster of tubular design with high-quality dial graphics and galvanised switches upgrades the quality interior, as does the large, free-standing and frameless display of the head unit, which is now to be had with a larger screen diagonal of

20.3 cm (8 inches) - standard on Sport and AMG Line. New colours and materials, as well as new finishes for the trim in the dashboard, ensure a fresh ambience. Initial reports are saying that it’s a much better drive too, which is a big bonus for potential buyers. With its new facelift, updated interior all with the typical Mercedes reliability and quality assurance, if anyone is looking for a premium hatchback performance car the new Mercedes A – class should be top of the list of contenders.

BMW M4 GTS feast for the eyes, BMW is back and growing at the critics with this new M4 concept car. Insiders are already billing this as the answer at last, to the much loved M3 of 1988. Optimised down to the finest detail, the BMW Concept M4 GTS builds on the BMW M4 Coupe’s dynamic and emotional use of forms. Yet its character as a high-performance special model, in which every detail has been developed to fulfil its purpose as a successful track machine, also comes immediately to the fore. The manually adjustable front splitter and rear wing – both in exposed carbon – ensure perfect aerodynamic balance and allow the BMW Concept M4 GTS to be adapted for both individual race tracks and for use on the road. Another example of the engineers’ rigorous adherence to lightweight design is the carbon fire bonnet, which lowers the car’s weight and centre of gravity further still. A wide front air intake optimises airflow and minimises front axle lift. The strong performance potential of the turbocharged six-cylinder in-line engine already demands an exceptionally sophisticated thermal management system for the engine and ancillary units. To ensure optimal operating temperatures in all situations, the M Division engineers have developed a highly innovative and effective cooling system. It comprises a main radiator plus additional radiators for the high- and low-temperature circuits, transmission and turbocharger in order to keep temperatures stable. The turbochargers are cooled by means of an indirect intercooler, assisted by an additional electric water pump. This is what true petrol heads with a few pennies in their pocket have been waiting for. The M4 offers a gritty hard persona with an engine capacity to leave other sports cars feeling a little woeful. But you can still drop the kids off to school in it – and leave safe in the knowledge that you will be the coolest parent around. What more could a grown up ask for? 59

CRAIG phillips- DIYHello Lifestyle Readers, We haven’t had too much of a summer to speak of, but I hope everyone has had an opportunity for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. I enjoyed playing in a fantastic summer event - this year’s Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship. The format involves a team of three being joined by a celebrity guest including the likes of Damon Hill, Peter Shilton, Peter Schmeichel, Keith Duffy, Jasper Carrott and yours truly of course! Every year the event gets better so it was real pleasure to be invited back again. The crowds get bigger each year too so I was certainly under some pressure, but I’m pleased to see my golf didn’t stand up too badly! I also attended the 2015 Jersey Battle of Flowers – the island’s oldest and one of its best loved events - where I had the great honour of acting as Mr Battle! I last visited Jersey in spring 2015 to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of Les Amis and was invited back for this fantastic event. I had the pleasure of accompanying Miss Battle, Chantelle Mundy at both the Day Parade and the Moonlight Parade. I’m currently looking forward to hosting the Pride of Merseyside Awards which honour the people who make a difference by caring, sharing and going the extra mile; people who achieve extraordinary things in the face of near-impossible odds. Having presented these awards before, it’s a real privilege and an honour to share the stage with such inspirational people. That’s about it from me this month my friends. I’m always trying to encourage more people to undertake simple DIY tasks so make sure you use my monthly tip!

All the best,

Craig. 62

TILING SPLASH BACK, CUTTING TILES Materials

• Tiles • Pre-mixed adhesive and grout • Tile spacers

Tools

18v tile cutter Adhesive spreader Grouting spatula Tape measure Spirit level Sponge

Tiling is a wonderful way of changing the look and feel of any kitchen or bathroom. It’s not only inspiring to look at from a design aspect but far more hygienic and less maintenance is involved. To start off, finding the focal point or centre of the area you are about to tile is vital. Mark that centre so you have equal cuts both sides, for a more symmetrical look Using the tile adhesive spreader comb the tile adhesive evenly and start fixing the tiles from the centre working your way out, applying tile spacers as you go. Apply the second course using the same principles. Cut straight or corner tiles using a cordless circular tile saw. After one hour remove the spacers, clean off excess tile adhesive then leave for 24 hours to dry. Apply grout using a plastic grout spatula, pushing it deep into the gaps. After about 10 minutes polish off the grout using a sponge to get a nice smooth finish.

september Hello Autumn. It’s not just my daughter’s middle name, September is the start of my business year. Along with children and teachers starting a new school year I plan my working year from September to July, with August off. It’s about this time of year that the shops start stocking up for Christmas (dare I say it) and people start going into a seasonal shopping frenzy for Halloween and then the big end of year celebrations. But is it really necessary? Why do we accept the pressure to live for months ahead. There is no point in working for your future if you don’t enjoy the present. I have returned from a month’s recharge in Cyprus and while the laptop was never completely turned off, I did benefit from the time away to prepare for the upcoming events, most notably The Childsplay Clothing Liverpool Fashion Week next month. I am of course guilty of constantly forward planning, though this is my profession, overseeing 64

the next edition of the magazine, planning the next fashion show or lifestyle event. When I am working I am dreaming of holidays, and when I am on holiday I am thinking about what work needs to be done when I get back. Then I get cross and remind myself that it’s ok to live in the present. My mind wanders off to months ahead where I start to set myself deadlines for work that I need to complete. Ambition is good but a never ending to-do list is not good for your health. I try to be aware of each day and stress less about the future, after all, it may never happen. Really. Stop each day to make time to talk to your children and your friends and set aside time to do activities you enjoy. Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you’ll die today. And in the words of my kids as I sat by the pool, “Put the goddamn laptop down." Stay stylish,

Amanda Moss
