Lifestyle EDITOR'S LETTER
june ISSUE 76
A note from our editor...
Hello lovely Lifestyle readers! Hello everybody, school’s out for summer and what a scorcher it’s turning out to be. My boys aren’t at school age yet as they are only two, but recently nothing has made me happier than when we have visited the local park, to see it full of happy children. Riding their bikes, feeding the ducks, playing tag and eating picnics - and best of all smiling. This for me is what life is all about, being surrounded by family and friends and enjoying life to the full – long live the summer!
4
As you can probably tell, I’m in a great mood. I have been lucky enough to get into Liverpool recently on a few nights out with my husband and our friends celebrating various birthdays. Some of my friends don’t live here and had to travel in, I always look forward to showing off my beloved city. This time Liverpool surpassed even my expectations. As we walked between the bustling streets, there is a vibe that can’t be missed – Liverpool is oozing confidence. And rightly so, there are more independent shops, eateries, and bars opening here than anywhere else in the country. Bold Street seems to be leading the way with some amazing restaurants such as Nolita Cantia, Leaf and the delicious Bakchich selling Lebanese street food, which is my personal favourite - so far. Not forgetting the Shipping Forecast and The Attic for some old school disco beats. I believe that this is the best that Liverpool has ever been, and I can only see it getting better and better. How exciting!
While I have you here please if you can, show your support for a local little girl, Isabella. She is cutting her hair on 5th August and donating it to the Little Princess Trust to make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments. She also has a fundraising page where she hopes to raise more money for the trust. Lots of love,
Joy x

mighty girl: This month's Mighty Girl is
Bernie Bucket.
Bernie is very much loved within the Liverpool community as she is empowering and inspirational to all who meet her. We at Lifestyle have the deepest respect and admiration for her. Please read her story and find out why........... WHEN WERE YOU FIRST DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER I was first diagnosed with
a rare form of breast cancer in April 2009.
TELL US BRIEFLY ABOUT THE 4 TIMES IT RETURNED This is the 4th time.
I had a lumpectomy in 2009... a mastectomy in 2010, my ovaries out in 2011 to prevent ovarian cancer. I had 6 monthly checks ups... and at the one in April 2013 the cancer had returned in my lymph nodes and in my right lung. Last week I was told I had cancer in both of my lungs and again in my lymph nodes. WHAT TREATMENT HAVE YOU HAD
A lumpectomy and Radiotherapy in 2009, Chemotherapy in 2013 - Due for more chemo next week! WHEN DID YOU START FUNDRAISING
The week I was diagnosed in 2009 I decided to put on a little fundraising event for Cancer Research UK and there was so much interest that the event was huge! Bernie Bucket was born and has never looked back! HOW MUCH HAVE YOU RAISED
ÂŁ138,928.45
Lifestyle INSPIRATION YOU ARE FAMOUS NOW, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES I love putting on big events
like Bernie Bucket's Rock 'n Roll Cruise on the Mersey and seeing everyone having a brilliant time whilst raising money for research. I also like talking to the people who give me money in my bucket outside supermarkets... I meet such kind, generous people. WHAT IS THE LATEST SITUATION WITH YOUR CANCER It's not good! My
oncologist in Clatterbridge referred me to a Professor in Liverpool who in turn referred me to Christie Hospital in Manchester to see if I was eligible for a clinical trial. As I did not fit the criteria for the trial I will probably be having weekly chemo in Liverpool. I will probably be very ill, lose my hair and be sick! I feel really well at present, and run most days and go to keep fit...it's a really bizarre situation... being so ill and feeling so well! But Bernie Bucket will carry on fighting!! I have the most wonderful husband, Keith who looks after me and we love each other very much. I have a lovely son Matthew and daughter-in-law Rachel who are always there for me. And I have a lot of brilliant friends who give me so much support. How could I not cope?
HOW DO YOU COPE
WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES YOU My daughter who sadly died from cancer just over 3years ago. She fought very hard and enjoyed every minute of her life and never complained... she was my inspiration ANY FINAL THOUGHTS FOR WHAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED The money Keith
and I have raised will hopefully help to find a cure for this evil disease which destroys so many people's lives. This certainly won't be in my lifetime... but hopefully for our children and our children's children.

Lifestyle celebrity interview
ANT AND DEC’S TAKEAWAY ON TOUR COMES TO LIVERPOOL! ever UK Arena tour. Can we expect the same as what we see on Saturday Night Takeaway or will you be making any changes to the format of the show? dec – The tour will be everything that you enjoy from the TV show live in the arena. The audience are going to be a huge part of the show and they’ll have a big involvement so no two shows will be the same for us which is quite nerve wracking and will keep us on our toes. But it’s the best bits of the TV show but live in an arena, no pressure! show – What are you most looking forward to? ant – getting out there and meeting the audience and the people who watch the show basically. We’ve got a lot of ideas on surprising the arena audiences and we can’t wait to put that into practise but then also just getting out there and having fun, doing Ant v’s Dec, Singalong live and Win The Ads but the most exciting thing is getting to see the audience. Do you think taking the show on the road to a live Arena audience will have a audience? Are you nervous? dec 10
we would be doing the studio show! Part of that is because the audience in the arena will be such a big part of the show and they’ll be involved in a lot of the things that we are for us so it’s not like we can prepare the show and just go out and do it. We’ve got to be on our toes and have our wits about us. It’s going to be nerve wracking but enjoyable at the same time. Is there a particular part of the show that you're most looking forward to? dec – The thing I’m really looking forward to is Win the Ads Live, we’ve got the rest of the show, Ant V’s Dec, Singalong Live and all the best from the TV show, but doing Win The Ads Live and having an audience member with the chance to leave the arena with a car and a holiday and a host of other prizes will be a really good moment in the arena.
Lifestyle celebrity interview You're used to being together a lot – how will being on the road for 5 weeks together compare to the norm? ant – It will be pretty similar really to be fair!! dec
really! ant – We live only a few doors apart on the street we’re on so if we’re only a few hotels room apart then it doesn’t make a huge What will you have on your rider for the tour? ant – Not thought about that! dec
haven’t really thought about a rider we’ll have to give some thought to that. ant – maybe a masseuse! We’ll probably need one of those. When will we next see you back on our screens? Will Saturday Night Takeaway be back soon? ant – Yes Saturday Night Takeaway will be back on TV next Feb but we’ll be back on screens before that with I’m a Celebrity, which starts in November. To each state a reason why the audience should be Team Ant/Team Dec ant – Because them the rules! We’re going to be splitting the audience down the middle so they’ll be Team Ant or Dec because we need support and help you see so that means if you are a team member you’re a part of the show. You have a staggering 3.6 million followers on twitter but who are you currently following and why? dec – we follow quite a few people, a lot of people that we work with like Simon Cowell,
David Walliams, Alesha and Amanda from Britain’s Got Talent, we follow a few people from I’m a Celeb. We follow quite a few ant – quite a few footballers so we can try and found out gossip, not that we ever get any. dec – I suppose we follow people on TV that we know, Dermot (O’Leary), Vernon (Kay), Holly and Fearne. Ant – Piers Morgan but he bangs on a lot so I don’t read every tweet of his!
Liverpool and why? dec – The last time we were in Liverpool was for the Britain’s Got Talent auditions, and we have great memories of touring in did as PJ and Duncan was in Liverpool and the crowd response was really good. I always think Scousers are like Geordies so we get on really well with them, and they should be a great audience at the tour.
The Tour will visit the Liverpool Echo Arena on 10th September 2014 Tickets are on sale now! www.officialantanddec.com or www.itv.com/takeawayontour *age and other restrictions apply, full terms and conditions see.

Lifestyle INTERVIEW shower, try Organix Serum (TJ Price £4.99 RRP £6.99) this helps resurface the hair and leaves a beautiful shine.
TJ hughes buyer
suzanne williams If you are jetting off to a beach somewhere this summer, or catching the rays in your back garden, don’t miss out on these beauty tips from Suzanne Williams, Head Beauty Buyer for TJ Hughes. Interview by Joy Lewis Summer is here at last, what beauty products are a must have for the hot lazy days ahead? Keeping cool and looking glam
without wearing heavy make-up on hot days are my main priorities, so I love to apply a quick spritz of Piz Buin Active Fresh Cooling Sun Spray 150ml SPF 30 (TJ Price 6.99 RRP £14.79) when I’m feeling the heat.
What hair products do you recommend to take on holiday, so you don't end up with straw like hair after two weeks in the sun? If your hair is feeling damaged
and struggling in the heat, my product recommendation would be TIGI Bed Head Urban Antidotes Recovery Conditioner 750ml (TJ Price £9.99). It moisturises and protects hair from extensive heat, which helps to prevent those pesky split ends. If you are looking for a quick-fix before a sunset meal and you can bear it, my best tip for glossy hair is to blast your hair with ice cold water after you’ve finished your conditioning treatment! But for those less into an ice-cold 12
Not everybody wants to go without make up in the sunshine - do you have any products or tips on how to avoid that horrible make-up melting look?
A good skincare regime is the secret to good makeup. Cleanse and moisturise before applying a decent primer. The girls in the office love L'Oreal True Match Foundation (TJ Price £4.99 RRP £10.98) and Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation (TJ Price £4.99 RRP £7.99). Apply a good powder to set your foundation like Rimmel Match Perfection Compact (TJ Price £3.99 RRP £5.99) and you will be good to go all day!
How do you keep up with the latest trends? Any tips? Keeping an eye on the
looks celebrities are going for is always a telltale sign of styles that will become popular. Following fashion week catwalks is also a good way to spot an up-and-coming high street style. Once you take away the more flamboyant and couture looks, there’ll be a new staples holding it all together and that’s what to watch for.
Safety in the sun is very important - do you recommend always wearing a high factor sunblock? if so which type is best? Always! Protecting your skin from the
sun is so important, particularly for the kids! I would recommend no lower than factor 30, even in the UK as it’s easy to burn from the sun, even if it doesn’t feel particularly hot. Piz Buin Allergy Suncare Lotion 200ml SPF (TJ Price £6.99 RRP £15.31) is great value as well as being extra gentle on sensitive skin. Don’t forget to apply a good after-sun for extra coverage at the end of the day. I recommend No-Ad Aloe After Sun Gel 500ml (TJ Price £3.99 RRP £7.20). over-exposure to the sun can age skin, so stay youthful and make sure sun-cream is part of your summer skin regime.

Lifestyle WHAT'S ON
Above the Beaten Track returns for 2014! O
ne of the best things about summer is the plethora of music festivals. Music has this wonderful ability to traverse age, culture and social background effortlessly. For that one concert, weekend or even just a 45 minute music set, you can forget everything, everybody is your friend and all are there to have a good time. Two years ago, Above the Beaten Track, one of the best music festivals Liverpool has to offer, took a short break. But now it's back to rock our city once again on Saturday 30th August at the Bluecoat. It will be showcasing live music, DJs, artists, makers and audio-visual extravaganzas. And its FREE! Established in Liverpool in 2008 at the View Two Gallery on Mathew Street, Above the Beaten Track hosted four annual events before taking a break. 2014 marks the return of the festival and it promises to be an even bigger celebration of Liverpool and Merseyside's creative grass roots scene, bringing emerging and under-the-radar live music to the fore.
14
This year above the Beaten Track has been embraced as part of the Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) and the 2014 ATBT event will once again be held in the Bluecoat, the oldest surviving
building in Liverpool city centre. Housed within these old walls are a variety of rooms – and many will be showcasing a different aspect of Liverpool's creative grass roots scene, including; live music, DJs, live art, poetry and audio visual extravaganza. Above the Beaten Track is a festival for Liverpool. With a philosophy of inclusion, it not only provides a platform for the hardworking musicians, DJs, artists and traders of the city but lets the festival's friends and partners have a hand in curating and running the event. ATBT is Mellowtone and Beaten Tracks, along with a host of partners, including; LIMF, the Bluecoat, Liverpool Acoustic, Capstan's Bazaar, Rebel Soul, Threshold Festival, the Wild Writers, the Red Sofa Sessions, Merseyside Arts Foundation and Screenadelica.

2 MILLION ST JOHNS MARKET PLAN TO MOVE A STEP CLOSER PLANS for a £2 million refurbishment of St John’s Market in Liverpool city centre are set to move a step closer.
A
report to the council’s Cabinet has recommended that Graham Construction – who are also carrying out improvements in the shopping centre - be appointed to carry out the modernisation programme. The work is urgently required to tackle a decline in footfall at the 161 stall facility, and follows recent improvements to improve the roof and lighting. The proposals, funded through the council’s capital programme, will see a modernised entrance on Elliot Street, with the approach to the market being opened up and improved signage making the market more visible. In the market itself, there will be a wide, light central atrium space; a new seating area; the balcony bought back into use with additional stalls; a café and new public toilets. It will also be wi-fi enabled. Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This work is much-needed because St John’s Market still has the feel of something that was designed in the 1970s. Our proposals will see the market transformed into a much more upto-date, brighter and more airy environment in line with what we know shoppers want.” Providing the go-ahead is given, the work will start later this year and be completed by April 2015.

OVER BY CHRISTMAS? LIFE IN LIVERPOOL DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR
Lifestyle NEWS
Mayor’s giant gift for Royal de Luxe
Liverpool’s libraries are joining together this summer to present a linked exhibition in five venues as part of the city’s contribution to the national centenary commemoration of the First World War.
T
he archives and special collections on display will provide an overview of life in Liverpool between 1914 and 1918, revealing some of the experiences and views of the people who lived, worked and studied here. Jenny Higham, Special Collections and Archives Manager, University of Liverpool said: “It is fascinating to uncover the story of the University of Liverpool's First World War through its collections, and the personal stories they reveal allow us to view both the institution and the city in a different way. From the staff who sent their sons to fight, the medics, chemists and engineers who found themselves a vital part of the war effort, to the pacifists who dedicated themselves to assisting the casualties of war, the impact of their experiences was profound. “The exhibition marks the first time the University’s Special Collections and Archives have been brought into the public space of the Victoria Gallery and Museum, home of the University's war memorial, which provides a fantastic opportunity to widen access to the research collections.” 20
A PAINTING commissioned by Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson has been handed over to Royal de Luxe director Jean Luc Courcoult.
L
iverpool born Allen Heron’s work depicts the Giants sailing out of the city in in 2012 as part of the Sea Odyssey, which marked 100 years since the Titanic sank. Allen and the Mayor handed the piece of art to Jean Luc during rehearsals for Memories of August 1914, which started in Liverpool on Wednesday 23rd July. Mayor Joe Anderson said: “Allen is a fantastic artist and I asked him to come up with a piece of work which the city could give to Jean Luc to thank him for the fabulous memories he left us with during Sea Odyssey.

Lifestyle YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS Taking your Child out of School – a question of Human Rights and the Right to Family Life?
A
rticle 8 of the Human Rights Convention provides the right to respect for one’s established family life. This includes close family ties, it includes any stable relationship, be it married, engaged, or between parents and children; siblings; grandparents and grandchildren etc. This right is often engaged, for example, when measures are taken by the State to separate family members (by removing children into care, or deporting one member of a family group). Is the new punitive school regime that parents now face if they take their children out of school during term time, and which includes fines, actually an infringement of Article 8? Probably not - but it is not too far off the mark; and some parents do feel very aggrieved. The regime may also be perceived as discriminatory against those parents from modest backgrounds who simply cannot afford the extortionate prices levied by the airlines and holiday companies during the main summer holidays (July and August) and even during Christmas and Easter. In the past, being able to take your children on holiday for a sensible period of a week or so during less costly times (perhaps June and September) allowed for those on modest incomes to enjoy quality time with their family and for a reasonable price. Now
the same people are forced to either pay fines (hefty if you have 2 or more children!), or extortionate holiday prices they cannot afford or simply not go away. The latter will have a real impact on the relationship between parent and child, especially those that work long hours and full weeks with relatively little contact with their children – through no fault of their own. I have no doubt of the great work schools and dedicated teachers undertake when looking after our children and educating them but at the same time we as parents are also influential in educating our children when we take them away to another country to sample different cultures, history, language and cuisine. Not forgetting that quality time of play and fun. Perhaps it is time the Government woke up to the way this new regime is impacting on not only parents and their purses BUT also more importantly on the relationship between parent and child in terms of quality bonding and relationship development. Does the Government really want to be a champion of the “Absent Father (or Mother)”? Do we really need more Nanny State? Give us back our flexibility and trust us to bring up our children the way we think is best. Michael Sandys (Solicitor at Jackson Canter in Liverpool heading up the Commercial Team/ NOT a Human Rights lawyer!) 29 msandys@jacksoncanter.co.uk.

Bead Designer
How did you get into designing?
I’ve always had an interest in beads since I was a teenager, but it wasn’t until I opened the bead shop that I realised all the different ways that beads could be used. Back when I first started making jewellery, I mainly just strung beads on to thread and attached a clasp. I thought that the bead weaving and bead embroidery types of jewellery making where well out of my league. I sat in awe looking at pictures in books and magazines and it wasn’t until one day when a customer came into the shop and basically informed me as the owner of the bead shop I needed to know everything there was to know about jewellery making (she was into the bead weaving). She told me this was the new big thing and I should get into it. So I took two classes on two basic stitches and from there I was hooked. The same customer came with me in 2013 when I received my award for first place in the finished seed bead jewellery category of the British Bead Awards. You started in the Bead Shop, what were your thoughts when you took this on?
When I opened I didn’t just want it to be a shop that people came into and left, I wanted it to be a place people enjoyed coming to. So I decided to have an open door policy, where people can come and buy the beads and
Lifestyle FASHION then take a sit around our table and make what they want to with a nice tea or coffee and on occasion a bit of cake. It takes on average 3 months to make a necklace, why so long? The larger pieces do take a long time to make. Each piece goes through a four stage process. I first decide on colour choices. Then the shape has to be designed out and trialled to make sure those pieces will fit together. Then comes the beading of the piece, every bead is stitched on by hand. The last stage is the piece is backed with suede and again this is stitched on to the design by hand. Most of the pieces that take this long are competition pieces and they have to be designed to make the biggest impact to get noticed. Who typically wears your pieces?
People who want something that is unique to them, we never make the same design twice. I’ve made pieces for brides, Mother of brides and just general people who want to make a statement. What is your grand dream in designing?
My grand dream is to be able to walk down the street or pick up a magazine and see someone wearing one of my designs and be able to think “I designed that”. What are you looking forward to the most about Liverpool fashion Week?
Having people see my designs up on the catwalk and knowing all the time and effort it took to get them there was worth it. SEE VICTORIA ON THE OPENING NGIHT OF LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK ON MONDAY 13TH OCTOBER. BOOK TICKETS NOW www.liverpoolfashionweek.co.uk

Lifestyle DESIGNER Why did you decide to go on BGT? I wanted to bring a new energy to the show, by pushing the boundaries and showcasing something different, fresh and new, as well as inspiring people to be creative by sharing my art and fashion creations to the world.
How did you get into designing? Even though Art has always been my passions but I’ve always been fascinated and interested in Fashion. It was after my Graduation at June 2012, I began to evolve into Scotland’s HIP Art and Fashion scene. I never studied fashion but my passions for art, craftsmanship and interest in fashion has taken the creative industry by storm. When did you realise you wanted to be a designer? I instantly knew this was the direction I wanted to continue pursuing my passions. When I started to paint on to garments, it just felt right at the right time during my graduation year. The fusion and the mode of direction provided me with the new creative challenges I was searching for to overcome greater new obstacles. What obstacles have you overcome? I believe everyone goes through ups and downs during their journey. I personally had encountered a few occasions which required four-portfolio submission attempts, in order to finally study at the Art School. In addition, during my third year at the Art School it was the most challenging year to push my creativity to another level in order to keep my dreams alive. However, those difficult years have crafted and shaped who and what I am currently pursuing. I am more determined in believing myself to stay focus and keep pushing the boundaries and the possibilities.
What did you learn from it? It was an unforgettable journey and I have learned a lot like always stay hopeful and never give up. It was a huge challenge and a real test of courage, guts and nerves to perform in front of millions of viewers, with no formal stage training. How are you coping with celebrity status? Strangely I am coping with it and it’s an honor to be recognized in public. I have to thank everyone for his or her supports. #Team_Chan #Love_Art What are you looking forward to about Liverpool fashion week? I am looking forward meeting everyone and working with the Liverpool Fashion Week Team putting on a fantastic show as well as showcasing at an amazing venue located at the Liverpool Football Club. What can we expect from your show? Expect to see a continuation of a collection of ideas that originally inspired me in The Fusion of Fine Art and Fashion. It surely will be colourful, imaginative and filling the runway with vibrant creations. Showcasing artworks beyond the art galleries seeing art coming to life.

Dr Newmans Clinic Vein, Set & Match. From ‘Wimbledon legs’ to ‘boozer’s nose’ – a new thread vein removal clinic is proving to be a hit in Liverpool Dr Newmans Clinic is the UK’s leading thread vein removal specialist with five surgeries across the UK, including London’s Harley Street. Now, Medical Director, Dr Peter Finigan has returned to his hometown to spearhead the launch of a new clinic in Rodney Street, Liverpool, in order to meet growing demand from patients. Thread Veins Thread veins, also known as spider veins, are often wrongly associated with heavy drinking, but can be caused by a number of factors, including too much sun, hormones and pregnancy, a genetic predisposition or an underlying skin condition such as rosacea. Thread veins can appear all over the body, but are most commonly found on the face – particularly around the nose and cheeks – and on the legs. Liverpool Clinic Dr Finigan, who grew up in Liverpool and now lives in Cheshire said: “We have seen more men coming forward to seek treatment on their thread veins in Liverpool – making up more than half of all patients. The treatment has minimal downtime, and usually takes around 20 minutes.”
Dr Finigan worked at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Trust, in Broadgreen Hospital, before becoming a partner at a medical practice in Cheshire. He is driving the national expansion of Dr Newmans Clinic, which treats more than 1,500 patients a year. He added: “However, we tend to treat more women for thread veins on the legs – which can appear on the upper thighs, calves and ankles.” Treatment The clinic is led by a team of qualified doctors who carry out a full consultation prior to treatment. Using a unique form of “microwave technology” called Thermocoagulation, energy is transferred to the area via an ultra-fine insulated needle, causing the vein to collapse and instantly disappear. TGI FRIDAYS LIVERPOOL ONE Review by Amanda Moss
I
have been a huge fan of TGI Fridays since I was a kid. Growing up in London the Mill Hill branch was a regular haunt and I had several birthday parties there. When we fly home from Larnaca it's tradition to stop off at TGIs on the way to the airport. Over the years nothing has changed, the menu remains the same wherever you are in the world and as a creature of comfort this really appeals to me. I couldn't contain my excitement to learn of a branch opening in Liverpool One and
wasted no time to check it out. Having just opened a month earlier the fixtures and fittings were sparkling new. The enthusiastic staff led my large family upstairs to a really high booth (too high for the high chair). This restaurant is keen to show off their children's menu and it really is amazing in choice and value. My kids selected the meatballs with pasta and garlic bread, the enormous hotdog, rack of ribs and a chicken burger, all served with fries. Such generous portions. Thick chocolate banana and chocolate shales accompanied the meals and still they found room for desert. My steak was the best I have had in long time. No complaints at all!

Shane Beale
Lifestyle MUSIC Interview by Joy Lewis
Shane Beale is a new emerging talented singer songwriter, to graduate from the creative powerhouse that is The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. His music has already caught the attention of the industries finest describing him as “One of the most interesting songwriters in Britain at the moment.” His latest track “Time” was released last month and debuted in the top 10 on the iTunes singer songwriter chart. WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR NEW EP TIME?
Time is my newest release - 4 track EP. I dubbed the EP; A song about the moon, a song about a miss, a song about a tragedy, a song about the next day. Broadly speaking it covers themes to do with hope, loss, and moving on. It is dedicated to people we wish we had more time to spend with. The EP was recorded at Ramport Studios in Battersea, which was originally built by The Who. The room was big enough for the band to be tracked live which help give the EP an organic feel. The central track of the EP felt too substantial to just be an album track, so the EP was shaped around that song. It was mixed as produced by long-time collaborator Jay Sikora who plays drums for Lianne Lahavas and Paulo Nutini. HAVE YOU DONE A VIDEO GO WITH IT?
Yep, the video for “Time” was directed by Andrew Howard is online now.

AT WHAT POINT IN YOUR LIFE DID YOU DECIDE MUSIC WAS GOING TO BE YOUR PATH?
Growing up in a musical family where I am the youngest of 3 - and my brother, sister and mother all write and perform music so I guess I wanted to emulate them. GROWING UP IN AUSTRALIA IN THE SUNSHINE AND THE BEACHES MUST HAVE BEEN IDYLLIC FOR YOU?
The weather and wide open spaces are great for sport! As a kid I was a gymnast and break dancer. YOU HAVE LIVED IN BRITAIN AND AUSTRALIA - WHO DO YOU CHEER FOR IN SPORTS?
About to scream for England in the World Cup but did you see Cahill's volley against Holland - unbelievable!!!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?
HAVE YOU STARTED YOUR TOUR YET? IS LIVERPOOL ON YOUR TOUR LIST?
The Guardian describes it as 'electro-flecked and melodic song smithery' which is fairly close to mark - I would add 'from the heart'.
Definitely coming to Liverpool on tour – I love playing in Liverpool having lived there for many years.

ROOKWOOD BAR & CUE By Joy Lewis
A
great new independent restaurant, Rookwood Bar & Cue, opened its doors in Arthouse Square (back of Colquitt Street) last month, promising to bring a taste of The Big Apple, that you can't get anywhere else. Rookwood Bar & Cue, is the brainchild of entrepreneur, Michael Gledhill. Who came up with the idea after his visit to New York, where he was blown away by the quality and taste of the meats being served there. This newest steakhouse to come to Liverpool has positioned itself in the middle of Ropewalks, Liverpool's bohemian quarter. It’s set in a stunning 18th century, Grade II listed building, and was launched last month, with a huge party on American Independence Day. Very apt. All of the meat served is dry-aged for at least 30 days, which locks in flavours and brings out the best in their steaks. The combination of exceptional local meat, served with the American accent of the special grill the restaurant has, is bound to prove very popular. I can’t wait to try it out myself. And when I do, I’ll be sure to tell you all about it.

ou don’t read many columns about Liverpool nightlife which begin with a reference to the play, Faust. However, it was the German philosopher, statesman and playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who also said that “Music is liquid architecture; Architecture is frozen music.” Appropriate then that Liverpool International Music Festival 2014 launches this month, in conjunction with MTV, with highly anticipated performances by Ella Eyre, Jess Glynne and Becky Hill at the resplendent Camp and Furnace. One of the people behind this utterly brilliant, hugely successful and infinitely versatile venue is primarily an architect by profession. In the early 90s Miles Falkingham was instrumental in transforming a former rope factory on Fleet Street into what Mixmag, the musical stylebible of that particular decade, described as ‘the original, the prototype clubbers bar.’ Baa Bar changed the game, not just in Liverpool but across the UK. National chains and breweries soon caught on and postindustrial bars featuring club DJs eventually became the norm.
Lifestyle NIGHTLIFE Twenty years later Falkingham has moved on with some new creative partners and found further inspiration for innovation among the remnants of our city’s industrial past. Magic is perhaps by definition something which is always more than just the sum of its parts. Three old warehouses and a former coach shed on Greenland Street bear testimony to this. Combined with rampant creativity, insightfulness and a couple of stylish vintage caravans they form the events spaces, bar, eatery, nightclub, photographic and location studios, indoor boutique caravan hotel and
pop-up retail facility that is Camp and Furnace. A vast and magical place of which Liverpool can be as proud as any of its musical sons. LIMFestival’s vision is to focus on three particular things; ‘celebrating greatness, discovering the new and inspiring the next.’ Music curator, Yaw Owusu says ‘’we want people to discover the DNA of a global music city and be surprised and inspired by the collection and scope of artists, spaces, events and collaborations in place.” If Liverpool’s international reputation for music is already assured then a venue like Camp and Furnace can only serve to enhance that reputation further.

Lifestyle ALBUM REVIEW Image by Barry McCall
“The Same Sun”, is the second solo studio album to be released by Sharon Corr, since the family band the Corrs decided to retire in 2006. Her first album, “Dream of You” was released in 2010, it wasn’t fantastic and it was basically the 6th Corrs album that was never released. So I wasn’t too excited when her latest album arrived on my desk. But I decided to give it my best listening time – when cooking for my family in the kitchen.
SHARON CORR Album: The Same Sun by Joy Lewis my verdict......
3/5
Sahron Corr “The Same Sun” album will be released 8th September 2014 48
The first track “Raindrops” is my favourite, it is the perfect start to such a charming and melodic album. Sharon’s voice is beautiful, nuanced and extremely accomplished – which isn’t surprising, as she has been singing professionally since her childhood. By the second track, “Take a Minute”, what I realised is how much like Karen Carpenter, Sharon Corr’s voice is. Not just with the pitch of her vocals, but timing and range too. Whether this emulation is deliberate or not on Sharon’s part, I have no idea, but it makes the album very easy to listen to, and if you like strong feelings of nostalgia, which I do, very enjoyable too. And so the album carries forth. Each track seamlessly blending into the next, to the point where I forgot that I was supposed to be giving this album my critique, instead it became some very enjoyable background music. The sound and style of the album, in particular the tracks “The Runaround” and “The Same Sun,” transported me back in time, into the same kitchen many years ago, when I was a child watching my mum cook and sing along to old tapes of the Carpenters. By the final track “The Christmas Night,” I was lulled into that happy safe place when I was a child and everything seemed possible. This is a beautiful and feel good album, and would succeed in tenderising even the hardest heart. I highly recommend a listen.

Spears. His enviable contacts book is a "Who's Who" of the business but not content with his achievements he wanted to incorporate sport within his cv and has represented
footballers. Most recently he was Head of Media at the World Corporate Games in Liverpool and was honoured by the Rt Hon Lord mayor of Liverpool, Erika Kemp. To date though his greatest achievement is being handed an award in New York from the President and CEO New Orleans Director of Super Bowl in the USA Kieran said, "Opportunities come to people who create them. This was a huge moment for me and I am immensely proud. I look at people like meera Said from the Kumars and I look to them for inspiration for everything they have done. I want to be the best person that I can be and experience everything that I can possibly do. I want to be a master at all crafts." How does he have the time to fit everything into his schedule? "I have an enormous work ethic, I am hugely ambitious. Growing up wound Indian /Hindu/Punjhabi family they instill respect and humbleness and have taught me that if I don't do it, no one is going to do it for me. That is the best advice I have ever been given." He added, "I love Liverpool, I have a lot of family here so I am always visiting". www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiucjB-zLOI www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hmyB4XGA1I

PHILLIP’S
DIY... Hello Lifestyle Readers!
S
ummer is in full swing, and though the excitement of the fantastic World Cup has begun to fade, there will (hopefully) still be plenty of sunshine and warm weather to enjoy in the next couple of months. My big news this month is that I have officially joined Checkatrade as their official ambassador. Having spent my career in the building industry, I have seen how often people struggle to find tradespeople that they can trust. Choosing the right people to carry out work for you can be a minefield. There’s a lot at stake and the wrong decision can lead to lost money, inconvenience and the possibility of having to live for years with the consequences of bad workmanship and the use of poor materials. That’s where Checkatrade comes in. It provides a platform where customers can rate the service provided by their tradespeople and establish trust. They’re really thorough about the contractors they allow to become members so you can be assured that those that have reached their criteria are reputable in the first place. At the end of the day, you’re inviting people into your home or business and handing over substantial sums of money. You want to know what to expect and any help you can get in working that out is a real bonus. Checkatrade gives you that help! Elsewhere, I made an appearance on Big Brother’s Bit on the Side to talk about the new series. I still enjoy going back to talk about the show as it holds plenty of good memories for me. Can’t believe it’s been 14 years since I won!
Well, that’s about it from me this month my friends. Don’t forget to log on to www. checkatrade.com if you are looking for a quality tradesman! Until next time… All the best, 56

The benefit of constructing your own garden gate is that you can really be creative with its size and design. I chose to build a gate to match my garden fencing and created a point at the top of the gate to make it harder for intruders to climb over the top! Start by cutting the 4”x1” timber fence panels to length, creating a point for the top of the gate if you wish. Now lay the fence panels on the floor or a work bench, leaving a space between each panel. Using a chop saw cut a cross section piece of 4”x1” and screw it firmly across the width of the fence panels using a drill/driver and 40mm screws. To add to the appearance of your gate and to provide extra support you can cut and fit another cross section on a diagonal spanning across the upright panels and just touching the bottom of the cross members. Next, position both hinges where they will be fixed to the gate and drill pilot holes where the screws will be. Then, swap the drill bit to a screw driver piece and firmly drive the screws into the timber of the gate to secure the hinges. You are now ready to hang your gate and should repeat the above process to secure the free edge of the hinges to the gate post. Latch fittings and locks can be attached in the same way as your hinges.

Lifestyle ART
The Art of England’s North West Coast Contrasting images of Wirral and Liverpool through the ages will form part of a major exhibition exploring the North West coastline – at The Atkinson, Southport, 23
August-9 November
T
his major exhibition of paintings, poetry, sculpture and state-of-the-art film includes two exhibits from documentary photographer Martin Parr’s iconic "The Last Resort" collection featuring a dilapidated New Brighton in the 1980s. L.S.Lowry loved painting the sea, so it's fitting that one of his most prestigious and scarcely-seen works will be the centrepiece of a major exhibition celebrating the transformation of the North West coast over the last two centuries. Sea Change exhibition will reflect all aspects of the transformation of the north west coast over the last 200 years which has seen a massive tourist boom. Blackpool was a tiny hamlet and Southport didn't even feature on the map until the early 1800s, whilst Fleetwood only came into existence when it was created from nothing by Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood in the 1830s. There are political, environmental, contemporary and traditional works on show. So it should appeal to anyone who has an interest in the history and present day life of the North West British seaside."

MAYORAL 100 CLUB
Lifestyle BUSINESS NEWS
THE Mayor of Liverpool is offering businesses a unique opportunity to be part of a ‘club’ to grow one of the city’s most popular maritime events- the River Festival - and boost their business in the process.
C
ompanies across the North West region are currently being approached to become part of Liverpool’s first Mayoral 100 Club – which would see up to 100 organisations pay £3,000 each to develop the International Mersey River Festival. The Albert Dock was the first member to sign up, but I think it’s safe to assume many will soon follow. It is no secret that the council has to make harsh financial cut backs, but nobody wants to see the amazing river festival fall victim. So, the money raised will be used to enhance and sustain the event and will enable the city to look at unique opportunities to showcase and market the magnificent waterfront to the world. More than 150 companies have already been approached, with a number already expressing an interest in becoming a member. Main sponsorship deals are still open including Event Title sponsor, Music on the Waterfront sponsor and the Maritime Education sponsor.
Any businesses interested in discussing the Mayoral 100 Club further should contact: trudy.redfern@liverpool.gov.uk or call 0151 600 2909. 60
NORTH WEST ENJOYS JOBS BOOST ABOVE NATIONAL FIGURES 12 Per cent job surge in north west in past year, compared to nine per cent across uk Transport, Construction, Healthcare and Graduate roles amongst best performing sectors in North West
T
hings really are starting to look better for the labour market, which is great news for our local economy, and here is the proof. Statistics just released by totaljobs. com are showing that the job market in the North West has experienced a 12 per cent rise in vacancies this year. This is higher than national rise of nine per cent in job vacancies across the UK. Many of these jobs have gone to the construction sector, 18% in the last quarter alone – which is unsurprising as everywhere you look there seems to be a new housing development in the throes of getting built. While transport and logistics also benefitted with an 11 % rise in the past three months. Meanwhile, engineering, manufacturing and utilities sectors in the North West enjoyed a six per cent increase in the past twelve months, as construction and manufacturing continues to improve post-recession. The totaljobs.com Barometer provides one of the most comprehensive representations of supply and demand in the UK job market – importantly reporting three months ahead of official ONS statistics.

The Whitehouse Pub on the corner of Berry Street and Duke Street, which stood derelict for many years, has undergone a dramatic transformation and reopened under the new name of Yardbird. Development company Ascot Property Group recently completed the site, which also has two apartments upstairs. Renovations were carried out with the support of Liverpool City Council’s Conservation Department and Heritage Lottery Funding. Rob Gutman, creator of iconic Liverpool venues Alma De Cuba and Korova, opened his latest venture on the site of the old Whitehouse at the end of June. Yardbird specialises in fried chicken, cocktails and donuts that are freshly baked on site. The restaurant and bar, which draws inspiration from America’s deep south, has launched to rave reviews and is open every day from 10am til late.

The New Honda Civic Type R
L
ong awaited, anticipated, and very much whispered about, Honda are making dreams come true, by bringing back the cool Honda Type R. As soon as I saw the images – break lights when lit looking like Viking Horns, black alloys, and the blood red Type-R badge – I knew I wanted one. I have fallen in love with the bad boy beast of hot hatch sports cars all over again. Ready for the spec? Brace yourself; the new Type R will be the first model in Europe to feature the company's brand-spanking VTEC turbo engine. It'll come as a 2.0-litre, direct injection, four-cylinder unit that'll make at least 280bhp and be Euro 6 compliant. Blimey. The key strapline of the campaign is ‘We R Back’, a nod to both the rebirth of the Type R and the huge 2015 which Honda is looking forward to with its return to Formula 1 and an all new version of the NSX supercar. The new Honda Civic Type R will arrive in UK dealerships in 2015. The Type R Concept model made its UK debut on the Honda stand at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. I can’t wait.

ASTON MARTIN V12 VANTAGE S ROADSTER
A
nother sexy sports car comes in the guise of cool sophistication as Aston Martin release details of the V12 Vantage S Roadster. When it arrives in markets around the world later this year the new sports car will become the luxury British marque’s most potent, fastest and fastest-accelerating series production roadster to date and follows in the broad tyre tracks of the V12 Vantage S Coupe that was launched to worldwide acclaim in 2013. Providing the most visceral yet engaging open-top experience in Aston Martin’s current range, the new V12 Vantage S Roadster delivers characteristic sporting agility underpinned by an enviable sports
‘soundtrack’ generated by its naturally aspirated V12 engine and expertly-tuned sports exhaust. Equipped with the latest 565 bhp (573 PS) Aston Martin AM28 6.0-litre V12 engine, featuring state-of-the-art Bosch engine management, the car is capable of reaching 201 mph and sprinting from rest to 60 mph in only 3.9 seconds (0-100km/h 4.1 seconds). Peak and low rev torque is delivered in abundance. With 620 Nm available at 5,750 rpm the V12 Vantage S Roadster is not to be found wanting in this vital department. Crucially, too, low rev torque – measured from just 1,000 rpm – starts at a colossal 510 Nm. Together, these statistics demonstrate the Aston Martin engineers’ ability to create a ‘flatter’, yet ‘fatter’, torque curve which supports exceptional driveability and strong pick-up through the gears.
Lifestyle THE LAST WORD WITH AMANDA MOSS
Hello August! H ow lucky are we to be basking in such a glorious summer?
The summer holidays are in full swing and the silly season has taken over. It’s perfect timing to wind down after a very successful Fashion & Beauty Awards and give time to prepare for an equally successful Liverpool Fashion Week in a couple of months. My annual holiday is my chance to reflect on the year gone by. So much has happened, I have had a baby, had an ovary removed, made friends and let go of people I thought were friends but were not. I have created special moments in my children’s lives, memories that we will cherish forever. It sounds corny I know but, I appreciate what I have. I don’t dwell at all on what could have been and I certainly forget what has gone. Best of all I live each day with a spring in my step, I appreciate my life and look forward to what’s coming next. My life is all about being positive, there is no such thing as making a mistake.... the saying goes “If you aren’t making any mistakes you aren’t taking any risks.... and no one gets to the top without taking risks. And that’s where I am heading. I’d like you to join me. PS: Stay stylish and buy your tickets for Liverpool Fashion Week!
