NEW BUSINESS
Claire Hickman, owner of Where Angels Tread
W
BESPOKE MEMORIAL ART
here Angels Tread began with a simple gift idea for my parents. As I child I grew up understanding that, tragically, both my sister and brother has passed away as infants, my parents going through what no parent should, burying their child, not once but twice. It was almost unspoken grief at the time, something which should be hidden away and not talked about in polite company. At 23, I lost my baby son pre-term. Luckily for me, when he died the fantastic medical team taking care of us encouraged me to name him, to talk about him and acknowledge his existence in the world, no matter how brief it had been. To understand his loss was real and the grief I experienced was something to be needed to be recognised. My loss, and my parents need to support me, encouraged them to talk more of my siblings and, though the very real pain of their loss still lingers, they are
very much loved and remembered in my family. I found comfort speaking his name, though I had no physical reminder of him other than a knitted blanket made for me during my pregnancy. So many times when we lose a baby, prior to full term, thorough miscarriage or still birth, or even in the days following their birth, we have nothing to hold and cherish, to show this little life existed and mattered. I decided that a simple piece of art, honouring my child and my siblings would be a beautiful gift for them to bring their memory into my parents home and created the very first print in their names. Seeing the smiles, and cleansing tears, this artwork brought to them, I felt others may benefit from my designs and Where Angels Tread was realised. We now offer bespoke framed designs to anyone wishing to acknowledge their precious baby.
These bespoke designs can be personalised with names, dates or simply left blank to have a little piece of heaven in your home. “There is no footprint
too small that cannot leave an imprint on the world”

GARDENING
As featured on BBC2’s How to Make Your Garden Perfect
How to create a garden that will always be in trend? Style is fleeting and changeable, and gardens are not created for one year. It is always import to create a foundation that you are happy with and then the feature within it adaptable.

andscaping of the garden is not a quick matter, things grow and mature, and many things fail - but that is the point. Everything is down to trial and error. As gardeners we are constantly experimenting and learning, improving out personal garden space. Fashion here is still a big factor but changes more slowly than in other areas of life. But landscape designers still highlight the trends that are relevant for 2021. They are approximately the same throughout the world: a modern garden is a place for happiness! Therefore, homeowners should not be exhausted, but enthused as they create a garden design that suits their own needs that is still on trend for 2021. For example ‘Growing Your Own’ is very popular at the moment, with more people spending so much time at home. Fruit trees and plenty of beds for both flowers herbs and vegetables (the realization that you yourself grow products should strengthen the feeling of happiness). We’ll talk about new trends in more detail.
love of all things eco-friendly, in many cases we are reverting back to the up cycling trend!
A few points to remember that will make the maintenance of your garden easier:
Many gardens are full of objects that can be used as a feature. Awnings under which something is stored, compost boxes… The trend is that these objects no longer cut their eyes with their inappropriateness. They are not hidden, but, on the contrary, focus on them and make them beautiful.
•
Grow perennials, and group them according to how much they need watering.
•
Place plants so that they do not create unnecessary work. For example, a pond or a pool should not have a tree that throws leaves into it, or a garden path should not have a bush that grows unruly, blocks the path and therefore requires frequent pruning.
•
Use a watering system. In general, modern horticultural trends are telling us to automate everything we can.
•
Choose durable materials that are easy to care for.

WILDLIFE
How watching your step can help rare breeding birds as we return to the countryside •
Over half of England’s most threatened breeding birds nest on or near the ground.
•
The pandemic is making the public more aware of nature in their local area. Four out of every 10 people asked, said they’ve spotted wildlife they have never noticed before near their homes over the last 12 months.
•
As we return to the countryside around Merseyside, watching your step can help protect breeding birds and other wildlife.
P
eople have been noticing nature much more during lockdown, as garden birds and other wildlife have helped lift spirits and connect us to the world outside. A recent YouGov survey, commissioned by the RSPB, showed that 41% of participants reported seeing wildlife near their homes that they had never noticed before over the last 12 months. Almost half of the UK population have said they have tried to attract nature to their gardens
during lockdown but as restrictions ease, the RSPB is keen to highlight that many of our threatened species don’t use gardens and nest boxes when raising young. Over half of England’s most threatened breeding bird species nest on, or near to the ground; including curlew, little tern, nightjar and lapwing. “If you ask people where bird’s nest, they are likely say a tree, hedge or nest box. It’s an image we’ve all grown up with but for some of our most threatened species it’s simply not true. Almost every natural habitat in the English countryside can be home to ground nesting birds and many of these species are under increasing pressure due habitat loss, predators and climate change. Yet we can all help protect them from disturbance by simply following The Countryside Code and keeping to footpaths.” Sara Humphrey, Communications Manager. In Merseyside, coastal areas, including
saltmarshes and beaches are often home to ground nesting birds. Little tern and ringed plover often nest near the tide's edge on shingle beaches and birds like oystercatcher and redshank create small nests hidden in the short undergrowth on marshes. As vulnerable chicks are easy prey for predators, dogs running through nesting sites can be very stressful for breeding birds. By sticking to paths, watching out for signage or alarm calls and keeping dogs on leads in these habitats, you can help give chicks the best chance of survival. Uplands and moors are also vital homes to ground nesting birds too, including curlew, dunlin and golden plover. The hen harrier, one of the UK's most threatened birds of prey, also nests at ground level in some upland areas. Birds nesting on the ground are at higher risk from predators, which is why the nests and eggs they contain are often extremely well camouflaged. This makes them very hard to see and avoid. To find out more about RSPB reserves and projects near you, or to help fund the vital work the charity does to protect wildlife, visit www.rspb.org.uk

AUTHOR
‘8 Wise Ways to a Healthier Happier Mind’ by Kim Rutherford Take back control of your mental health
A
pril marks the start of Stress Awareness month, and the new book available for pre-order now, 8 Wise Ways to a Healthier Happier Mind by qualified psychotherapist, coach and corporate trainer Kim Rutherford, is ideal for those who are looking to take back control of their mental health and to begin the process of feeling better about themselves and all aspects of their lives. Kim knows first-hand only too well the struggles that mental health issues can bring, having lived with someone from a young age who battled with such troubles. She then experienced her own difficulties as she grew older, and as a result of living through these experiences she came to understand both angles: spotting the signs of inner turmoil in both herself and in others. Kim is now passionate about helping others to recognise the warning signs in their own lives, and she works to 10
empower others in taking action to address potential problems. 8 Wise Ways is based on 8Wise™, a tried and tested formula that Kim uses with both her coaching and corporate clients; helping those who have mental health issues to gain a sense of purpose, be actively involved in both their work and personal lives, have hobbies that are satisfying, find happiness, have joyful relationships, and assisting them with looking at ways to cultivate a healthy body and living environment. Kim believes that our wellness is a combination of eight core dimensions and that by achieving balance across these dimensions, anyone reading the book can take steps to improve their quality of life in every area. The core dimensions are as follows: • Emotional - When you are emotionally well you have a positive attitude, high self-
esteem, a strong sense of self and the ability to recognise and share a wide range of feelings with others in a constructive way. You find it easy to cope with life and build successful relationships. • Physical - To achieve physical wellbeing, you need to take proper care of your body for optimal health and functioning. Eat healthy foods, exercise, get adequate sleep every night and avoid the bad habits that come with consuming or doing things to excess. • Spiritual - Spiritual wellbeing has to do with finding meaning in life events, understanding your life’s purpose and living in a way that reflects your values and beliefs.
• Environmental - To be environmentally well, you need to be aware of the interactions between the environment, your community and yourself and behave in such a way that reflects a responsible and caring attitude towards each one. You should spend most of your time in a place that soothes you and in the company of individuals who support you. • Social - When you’ve achieved social wellbeing, you will have built strong relationships with others, dealt with conflict appropriately, and connected to a positive social network. • Intellectual – You are stimulated and intellectually well when you are willing to learn and are open to new ideas. You also make time to embrace creativity, you engage with critical thinking and you aspire to seek out healthy new challenges and adventures. • Occupational - Seek to have a career that is interesting, enjoyable, meaningful and that contributes to wider society. Then, put your focus on and
being content with the progress you have made. • Financial - You don’t need to be rich to achieve financial health, but you do need to live within your means and learn to manage your finances for both the short and long term, with the aim of having enough to be happy. The 8 Wise Programme is a unique Therapeutic Coaching programme. It is one that combines the concepts of counselling and coaching for a more effective model for improving your wellness and wellbeing, as well as addressing the management of stressrelated and mental health issues. Throughout the 8 Wise Ways book, you will take a deep dive into each dimension and be equipped with the tools to be able to assess yourself, and to set an action plan with realistic goals. It will also enable you develop the key techniques you need to manage your stress levels. This process enables and empowers you to find your own balance and achieve harmony between your body, mind, and spirit – ultimately living a more fulfilling life.
The book has been written for those looking to bring some balance to their lives, because the real pandemic is the mental health crisis that was already looming prior to COVID-19. 2021 is a year for each individual to take back control of their mental health, and so this book will help the reader with taking their first steps towards becoming more resilient.

Lifestyle columnist and Liverpool Live Radio presenter CLAUDINE HOPE Hello Darlings! Recently I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Joe Eshwar who is an Indian film director/ cinematographer. Joe’s latest movie is called 8119 Miles and I was given the opportunity to watch the preview before it hits the screens in the UK! The plot is about the young man called Gabriel D’Selva, a mechanic from Goa, Western India. His greatest dream is to visit the UK. His repeated attempts to secure a visa is to no avail until Ram Kumar, a travel agent who also operates a parallel illegal migration ring, offers him a chance to travel from India to the UK by a route called 8119. 8119 is an ancient route used by illegal migrants who travelled from Southeast Asia to Europe through China, Mongolia, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, France and the UK. 12
Gabriel, along with Anil, a bankrupt film producer, embraces 8119 Miles. The journey takes them through embarrassing situations and miraculous escapes. They learn the value of life and the pain of loss. For Anil, the bankrupt producer 8119 Miles is a road to escape from his debtors in India, but for Gabriel, it is his last chance to reconcile with his long lost love. What begins in India ends in the UK in a span of 13 months. I loved this movie! Drama, humor and stunning locations is a winning combination that draws you into their journey. I will be sure to keep you posted on the release date! The Trailer 8119 Miles is on YouTube. Liverpool Live Radio Station is such a blast! Two

Kate Devine, insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket said: “The one place we should all feel safe is in our homes. We have become more accustomed to staying at home due to lockdown, so Brits are taking extra precaution in their safety. It’s great to see that more cities are installing burglar alarms into their properties. Having a home security system can help keep your home protected against burglars, keeping your belongings safe and your mind at ease.
Liverpool is the most security conscious city in the UK hilst crime in the UK has decreased during the last year, there is still one burglary every 108 seconds in the UK, which equates to 816 burglaries a day. It's not surprising that we've seen a huge increase in homeowners taking precautions to protect their homes. Data collected from MoneySuperMarket customers has revealed the UK’s most security-
conscious cities, comparing the percentages of homes with and without burglar alarms in each region. Liverpool has taken the top spot with one in two of households having a burglar alarm, or 253,359 households of the city. ATION HEADLINE STORY - INSPIR
Emma Dolan-Horlock was trapped in bed for six years and dreaming of a walk in Sefton Park can be
W
hen successful local businesswoman Emma Dolan-Horlock was bitten by a ‘Tick’ in America over 10 years ago, little did she realise the devastating impact this would have on her life. The seemingly inconsequential bite left her bed-ridden, suffering with Lyme Disease and a host of associated medical conditions, leaving her bed-bound, unable to sit or stand, or access the rehabilitation she needs to aid recovery and help her live a normal life. She now spends every day lying flat on her back longing to enjoy the simple pleasures most people take for granted. Her only trips out of the house during the past six years have been to hospitals.
14
Emma, 46, who lives close to Sefton Park in South Liverpool has since suffered a series of serious, debilitating medical complications, all of which 14
tracked back to the bite. In 2014 she contracted a virus which was intensified by severe immune suppression which devastated her Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and left her with a lifethreatening condition called Addison’s disease. ANS controls a person’s breathing, heartrate, blood pressure and temperature, this complication along with her previous diagnoses had devastating consequences for her already complex medical needs. Emma was eventually diagnosed with Pandysautonomia. It was in 2014 when Emma developed a severe respiratory flu like virus rendering her bed ridden for two weeks unable to sit up or stand up without passing out, due to dangerously low blood pressure and an incredibly high heart rate that the journey for the ANS diagnosis began.
Eventually after a three year wait, following a series of tests and consultations Emma’s medical team determined that the virus could be stemmed back to the development of her Lyme Disease, which has devastating consequences on your immune system. Emma, whose Twitter account @JustMissEmma chronicles the journey so far #DiaryofaHorizontalGirl, said “I was bitten by a Tick at 31 and was bedbound by 40 and at 46 I am desperate to give myself the best chance possible to live a normal, fulfilling life and not spend the rest of my life staring at a ceiling. I am a really positive person and before this illness was the life and soul of the party. I tried to run my business from
my bed for a while, but realized that my main and only focus has to be my rehabilitation and focusing on the best possible recovery.” Emma has now been waiting for inpatient rehab and physio for almost three years and she should have been admitted to a specialist unit last summer. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, Emma has now been told this is more likely to be in 16-18 months and Emma is acutely aware that the longer she remains horizontal the shorter her chances of a meaningful recovery. Emma continued “My body is now so unwell and the lack of rehabilitation and being permanently horizontal is causing additional complex problems. My body is telling me I have not got 18 months to wait and mentally it is taking It’s toll too. Being horizonal is difficult enough, but being in a highly vulnerable category during a pandemic and the lack of contact with other people has some days been too much to bear and it is becoming so hard to stay positive. I live close to Sefton Park and I dream of the day I can enjoy the trees, the lake, the flowers and the beautiful surroundings I live in”
Emma’s specialist has suggested a private option for her, which he feels would give her the best chance of recovery, which Emma acknowledges could be her last chance for any meaningful rehabilitation to be successful and improve her quality of Life. Emma’s last hope is a clinic in London and she has launched a Just Giving Page to fund the treatment and to purchase a stretcher.
She said: "It was a difficult decision to launch this Just Giving Page especially in the current climate with so many suffering their own hardships but I also really want to raise awareness about how this condition is not only under-researched, but under-funded for people like me, who just fall through the gaps constantly."
As well as the fundraiser, Emma said she is passionate about raising awareness for other people.

andpipers in Southport provides round the clock expert qualified care for disabled people and their carers in a holiday setting. Here is Shaun's story, who was registered blind from birth and struggled with crippling anxiety and mental health issues during lockdown, and, with support from Revitalise, finally found his happy place. Before the pandemic hit, Shaun was living independently. His passion for performing arts led him to set up a community theatre group, creating a solid network of support for himself. However, as a result of COVID-19, his regular support network disappeared. Because of the crippling isolation that many disabled people and their carers have experienced, Shaun's mental health deteriorated, and he desperately needed some respite care.Since the pandemic began,
16
been inundated with calls from people in similarly desperate situations.
We welcomed Shaun to our Sandpipers centre, where he finally had the support, care and company to remedy his loneliness, drastically improving his mental health. He loved spending time with our other guests, with whom he has made lasting friendships. This was all provided in a safe environment adhering to social distancing regulations whilst providing as many opportunities for interaction and engagement as possible. Shaun said of his break: “When I came here, I was put at ease, I’ve never received such love and care. There are not many places you can go where you are so well supported and reassured
that everything will be ok. I’m so glad to have found Revitalise.” As the restrictions are slowly lifted, the demand for our services is increasing exponentially, particularly as the community support which would have been available before the pandemic will be slow to return. Revitalise Sandpipers must be able to continue to offer support for vulnerable people like Shaun. By donating online via our website or by emailing fundraising@ revitalise.org.uk, you will support disabled people just like Shaun to be able to access this vital service.

And we buy the latest smartphone with all the gadgets to help us manage our lives and we end up getting even more stressed out over it. It’s a bit of a life conundrum ... all this great technology that’s makes everything simpler simultaneously makes things more complex. If it was just the tech stuff that made things complicated I could probably cope ... but we also have to add politics into the mix. As if everything wasn’t already complicated enough we have the never-
ending argument about Brexit ... and Hard Brexit, whatever that turns out to be. It has created a more complex landscape for us all. And I can’t help thinking that when we do eventually get Brexit it may just turn out that we’re all no happier than we were before.

Set simple, manageable goals for yourself. Start with some really easy ones like not taking your phone to bed with you or switching it off when you have your evening meal.
If you set up and stick to a routine that tends to make life less complicated. We are creatures of habit (good and bad) so maintaining good habits also helps us feel that we have some control over our lives.

Government confirms national events pilot to take place in Liverpool
logistics of event ticketing and testing, venue admittance and postevent follow-up •
Assess the adequacy of data collected around events and venues for responding to potential outbreaks, and for adapting protection measures according to the background levels and patterns of spread of the virus
•
Measure the uptake of tickets and explore attitudes to, and acceptability of the overall ticketing, questioning and testing regime
The Government has announced details of the pilot events to be held in Liverpool, as the city follows in the footsteps of Amsterdam and Barcelona by participating in a science-led research programme to reopen the cultural and business sectors. The Events Research Programme (ERP) will be used to provide key scientific data into how events for a range of audiences could be permitted to safely reopen as part of Step 4 of the roadmap out of lockdown, commencing no earlier than June 21. The review will be crucial to how venues – from major sport stadiums to comedy clubs, theatres to live music spaces, wedding venues to conference centres – could operate this summer. The Liverpool pilots – a comedy gig, an outdoor cinema, a club night and a business event - will gather evidence associated with different settings and approaches to managing and mitigating transmission risk. The pilots will explore how different approaches to social distancing, ventilation and test-on-entry protocols could ease opening and maximise participation, including the use of lateral flow tests - but there will be no use of socalled ‘vaccine passports’.
The Government is working closely with the University of Liverpool and Culture Liverpool on the project, which follows on from the city’s successful pilot Covid-19 testing programme for people without symptoms held last November. Liverpool events •

If an event does not take place, ticketholders will get a full refund and the cost will be covered by the Government. 19
BEAUTY THERAPY Liverpool’s top beauty therapist and intimate waxing specialist predicts a record summer of post lockdown intimate grooming with men leading the way for treatments. Jackie Rose of The Treatment Rooms in Liverpool was working in one of the first salons in the country to introduce intimate waxing in the 1990s. She went on to set up The Treatment Rooms 21 years ago and now has almost 10,000 clients of which 20% are men. With lockdown forcing salons to close, she is anticipating a record summer of bookings, often made by partners. She said, “In the '90s all waxing treatments were very private and not advertised. Often we would do escorts and strippers and everyday folk. It was a very closed shop, no one discussed where they went or told anyone they had it nor 20
talked about it. When I opened my salon 30 years ago I knew things had to change. I knew a lot of sportsmen needed hair removal for the sake of their sport, like swimming, triathletes and body-builders. They all shaved but when you shave you get that itch which is very irritating and often get a rash which isn't very practical, so there was obviously a market for waxing. Also people stared to realise that it lasts a lot longer and you don’t get an embarrassing itch when it grows back. So all these things helped to push people into waxing, in particular men. For the men’s intimate waxing they ask for SBC or
sack, back and crack this is everything from genitals then turnover and wax across their backside and then in between their bum cheeks, it’s up close and personal but be assured we’re clean, quick and we are professional.” In 2000 as the internet hit the big time and mobile phones became more popular, 2004 the iphone and facebook, then instagram in 2010 was launched and snapchat a year later. All these things transformed the body image as now you’re only one click away from showing your body off to someone. Also people
like to talk about what treatments they have done now because grooming is big business, particular now with reality shows like Love Island and Ru Paul Drag Race. People like to see how others look We see how people are conscious of their bodies and you’re only one click away from a photo.” She added, "The trend for 2021 is still very much wax everything off but the different types of waxing that are available, we do Brazillion waxing and Hollywood for the women as this is what they ask for. When I trained, a Hollywookbikini was a landing strip and Brazilian was all the hair off. Now it’s all changed in the media and now waxing is sold as Brazilian being just a small bit left at the front of the pubic hair and the Hollywood is all off. That is
what intimate waxing is all about now,. We don’t tidy up like we did in the' 90s, we make sure you cant see spiders legs when lying on the beach!” Liverpool has definitely led the way in beauty and continues to do so. I am so proud of our city, proud to be from here and work here. Liverpool people are so accommodating and not very judgemental, we accept people for who they are and who they want to be and we naturally love people and we like to help wherever possible. I think these things make a difference to why we are the leaders” FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT AMANDA MOSS:

Rag‘n’Bone Man Meets P!nk
New Single ‘Anywhere Away From Here’ April 9th Taken from forthcoming album ‘Life By Misadventure’
W
ritten by Rag’n’Bone Man, his album collaborator Ben Jackson-Cook, as well as Simon Aldred, Dan Priddy and Mark Crew, the song is about being uncomfortable in your surroundings. “When the lights go up/ I don’t think I told you… That I feel out of place,” he sings. “Pull me underground/ Don’t know if you notice/ Sometimes I close my eyes and dream of somewhere else.” Of the track, Rag’n’Bone Man says; “This song is an honest reflection of wanting to disappear from uncomfortable situations - about the vulnerabilities that we all face. It’s a honour to have P!nk on this record and I’m so glad she is able to be a part of it”
28
Previous single, the sublime ‘All You Ever Wanted’, made its mark with Radio 1 & Radio 2 playlist spots, as well as racing to #1 in both the Airplay and iTunes Chart. Rag‘n’Bone Man recently turned in all-star performances on Comic Relief, Later...with Jools Holland and Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and will perform three special sold out shows at London’s Jazz Cafe on June 27th, 28th & 29th. His 2017 landmark debut ‘Human’ was a phenomenal success; a 4x platinum album which shot to #1 week of release in the UK, became the fastest-selling album by a male artist for the entire decade and earned him BRIT and Ivor Novello Awards.
If that’s a hard act to follow, Rag‘n’Bone Man tore up the rule book and went to Nashville to write and record what would become ‘Life By Misadventure’, returning to the UK as the first lockdown set in. While a dose of heavy blues and soul lives within some of these new tunes, the majority of this new album finds Rag‘n’Bone Man taking a huge step forward as an artist, a songwriter, and a singer capable of showcasing tremendous warmth and real emotion with every breath. ‘Life By Misadventure’ is the perfect tonic for these times and an incredible collection of emotional songs to touch us when we need it most. It’s an album of depth and soul, about growing up and moving forward. Enjoy the trip. Rag’n’Bone Man is set to play the following UK tour dates. Tickets for the autumn dates are on presale March 23rd, and on general sale March 26th.
