IDRIS ELBA INTERVIEW

"Some guys want to be toned or want to jog for miles, but my ultimate fitness goal is to be fight-ready. If I step into the ring, could I go toe-to-toe for five rounds? That's what I strive for. That's what I consider fit. I want to know that if I'm being wrestled to the ground, I've got the strength to fight a man off." Your fame has skyrocketed in recent years. Does it ever seem slightly unreal to you? I'm still shocked by how I've managed to reach these great heights after 25 years of hard work and a lot of struggles during that time. But it makes me want to work harder than ever. I still remember the bad times having to sleep in a van with for a couple of months in New York and going to auditions in the morning and earning a little money DJing at night. It was tough to get any decent work because no one liked my accent 8
“
Idris Elba is a professional fear fighter sand star of the big and small screen From car racing to performing dangerous stunts to becoming a kickboxer, the handsome Hackney-born actor believes in testing his limits at every opportunity. The star of the long-running BBC TV series Luther and movies including Star Trek Beyond, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and Pacific Rim, Elba has given full vent to a powerful sense of ambition amplified by his typical joyful swagger. He's the guy who walks into a room and electrifies everyone around him. In his acting work, he can switch instantly from charmer to killer and audiences love him in either form. But it's his imposing physique, honed by years of dedicated, intensive fitness training, that adds a sense of menace to whatever his next move might be. Said Elba of his devotion to fitness:
I was inspired by Robert De Niro
“
(in the U.S.). I didn't really feel settled until I got The Wire (in 2002) and that changed everything. You started DJing at age 14. Is that still important to you? I love music. It's my first love. Being a DJ was my first job and I used to do a lot of weddings in London. I enjoy playing in front of big audiences and performing in clubs and going to places like Ibiza and Berlin. I love to see the crowd get wild and you feel this great connection with people through the music. Many people wonder why I still bother to do it with the success I have as an actor but I love the way I'm able to express my creativity through music. It's very different from acting. How did you go from being a DJ to wanting to become an actor? I was inspired by Robert De Niro. I had skipped school one afternoon when I was 16 to go see Once Upon a Time in America. I was blown away by his performance. The next day I told my acting teacher in school that I wanted to be like De Niro. My teacher, who believed in my talent, told me that it was important to pursue your dreams and that one day I would become a great actor. That was what set me on my way. What was your parents' reaction to your decision? My father wasn't that happy about it and he was worried that I would starve as an actor and he told me to keep working as a DJ so I could at least earn a living.
but my mother supported me. A lot of your fans and friends must also have wondered why you would want to train as a kickboxer in your 40s and get into the ring with professional fighters? I have a need to challenge my limits. I've been doing that all my life. My mom hated the idea and she was worried about me getting hurt. When I had my fight (which was a draw), I got knocked down in the third round and my mother, who was there watching me, asked me whether I needed my (asthma) inhaler and told me to stop letting my opponent kick me in the head. I told her: "Mom, please be quiet." You're father to a young son, Winston. How is that going? I'm a very doting father. I don't always get to spend that much time with them because I'm working so much. But when I'm at home I love being with him and he's really a good boy. How do you get along with your teenage daughter? For most parents that can be a struggle? It can be like that, yeah. I love Issy dearly, but she's a teenager and sometimes she gives me a hard time. The problem is that when your daughter gets older you're no longer a star in their eyes.
CLIPPER 2017-18 ROUND THE WORLD YACHT RACE REVEALS £7.5 MILLION BOOST TO LIVERPOOL ECONOMY The Clipper Race, one of the biggest round the world yacht races and one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet, had a positive economic impact of over £7.5 million from its Race Start in Liverpool in August, reinforcing its strength and power as an impactful and highly inspirational global sports event. And the city prepares for its return in 2018. Early research commissioned by Culture Liverpool, and conducted by North West Research and Strategy, suggests that the event has already left behind a substantial economic boost to Liverpool and has been responsible for a £7,510,000 boost and a further million pounds of visitor spending retention in the city. Returning to the city bigger and better than ever for the first time in a decade, the Clipper Race drew some 220,000 visitors to Liverpool during the week-long schedule of festivities at Albert Dock. Commenting on the report, Clipper Race CEO William Ward said: “The Clipper Race has developed and grown so significantly over the past 21 years and its ability to deliver such impressive economic and cultural benefits to partners, in addition to providing life changing ocean racing experience to non-professional crew, is something that I am very proud of. “We had a fantastic time in Liverpool this year and very much look forward to returning in July next year for the finish of the 2017-18 edition.” The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is unique in that it is the only event on the planet which trains non-professional sailors to become ocean racers. Approximately 40 per cent of
crew members have never sailed before they sign up. 40,000 nautical miles in length, the circumnavigation is divided into eight legs. More than just a sailing race, the Clipper Race inspires its adventurous crew to push themselves beyond physical and mental barriers, and enables its business partners, from Team Partners, Fleet Partners and Suppliers, to achieve incredible results on a global scale. Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “We are incredibly proud to be the host port for both the start and finish of the event, and it’s wonderful to know that it has already attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors which in-turn boosted the local economy by millions “The city is looking forward to giving the Clipper vessels and crew another warm welcome next year as we celebrate our tenth anniversary of being European Capital of Culture.” In addition to economic benefits, as a worldwide event the Clipper Race Start in Liverpool has further cemented the position of the city’s waterfront as a world class event stage. The Clipper Race fleet, including the Liverpool 2018 team entry is currently racing across the Southern Ocean to Fremantle, Western Australia having already stopped in Punta del Este, Uruguay and Cape Town, South Africa. The twelve Clipper Race teams will return to Liverpool next summer on 28 July 2018 as highlighted at World Travel Market yesterday as part of the Liverpool 2018 campaign. Before the fleet gets to Liverpool, UK, completing the 2017-18 edition of the race, it will now call into Fremantle, Sydney, Hobart, Whitsundays (Australia), Sanya and Qingdao in China, Seattle and New York in USA, and Derry-Londonderry in Northern Ireland. About the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race The eleventh edition of the unique biennial Clipper Race will visit six continents and include six ocean crossings. Almost 5000 novices have been turned into ocean racers during the past twenty years of the Clipper Race, though still more people have climbed Mount Everest than circumnavigated the globe. Twelve Clipper Race teams compete on the world’s largest matched fleet of 70-foot ocean racing yachts. Around 710 crew come from all walks of life and from all around the world, with over 40 different nationalities represented. Crew can complete the full circumnavigation, or one or more of the eight legs that make up the Clipper Race. After completing the second stopover of the Clipper 2017-18 Race in Cape Town, the teams are heading to Fremantle before continuing on to Sydney, Hobart, The Whitsundays, Sanya, Qingdao, Seattle, Panama and New York before a final crossing of the Atlantic Ocean towards Derry-Londonderry. After crossing six oceans and visiting thirteen stopover ports on six continents, the fleet will return to Liverpool’s Albert Dock almost a year later for Race Finish on Saturday 28 July 2018, where one of the teams will be awarded the illustrious Clipper Race trophy.

The Ice Festival, which is located at the Pier Head, will be open to the people of Liverpool and beyond until January 7 and is the ultimate day out destination that’s perfect for couples, families and friends alike. The Tree of Truth is just one of many intrinsically created sculptures that make up the ten tonnes of ice that sit within the Ice Bar, situated on the Pier Head. Other creations include a replica of the throne from hit movie The Huntsman: Winter’s War, that guests can sit on and take advantage of a brilliant photo opportunity. The Ice Bar, which is packed with ice that is made from over 40,000 mugs of water, also serves favourite alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Speaking about the opening Richard Elmer, Ice Festival Creator, says: “This is the best Ice Bar that we’ve ever made in the whole six years of bringing the Ice Festival to Liverpool. It’s suitable for all the family definitely not to be missed!”

here on earth has this year gone? It’s flown by… and can officially start getting excited about Christmas and flying to Neverland for Peter Pan at The Epstein Theatre when I am playing the part of Tinkerbell. This basically transpires to me just behaving normally and bouncing around thinking I am in fact a fairy! It was great to be on stage at The Liverpool One Christmas Light Switch on with the cast from LHK Productions – and there may have been a little bit of partying that followed!!! As well as panto over Christmas I am delighted to be able to still host the Fanzone at Everton for certain fixtures with the lovely
20
Gav P! As a lifelong Evertonian to be involved with the Club I have grown up supporting is an absolute honour … and hopefully the 3-2 win over Watford in a thriller of a second half will turn the season around for them. October saw one of my favourite events Halloween – which is another excuse to decorate the house before Christmas! Carried out the usual tradition of Trick or Treating with my daughter Melodie and her friends, and on the Saturday before I had my regular gig at Champs in Ainsdale where I sing and DJ (With the help of my brother Pete!) – thankfully the Halloween special was fancy dress or otherwise I would have been bombarded with hilarious comments such as “Oh I see you’ve already come dressed as a witch.” As any parent knows – there are stand out moments when you are exceptionally proud of your children and for me this happened when I attended Michael’s presentation evening at Formby High as he passed his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Seeing the gruelling conditions they dealt with during their 3 day expedition made me virtually burst with pride – had to hold back the tears as I had been warned by Michael to “dress appropriately and not cry” beforehand!... well at least I managed one of them I have also been given a brand new show on heat radio – I have been part of the team at heat for over 4 years doing a number of different shows … but now I will be on from 12-2pm with the first hour being “reheat classics” bringing back memories from school/clubbing days! So alongside
breakfast with Rossie on Radio City 2 Monday – Friday and then my own show on RC2 on a Saturday 6-10am – not much chance of escaping me really is there! It has also been the month of Radio City Live at the Echo Arena which having worked there in the past is so amazing to watch from the crowd and see what an amazing show it is. I have to say – the kids and I LOVED local lad James Hype who had the Arena bouncing – and to see such stars like Keisha, Paloma Faith & Clean Bandit perform made me so proud as always to be part of this incredible station #teamcity I have always thought that reading to my children has been such an important part of their lives – it was always a part of their bedtime routine – and I am delighted to have been asked to read at Marks & Spencer in Cheshire Oaks to a group of children the book that runs alongside my favourite Christmas advert this year “Paddington & the Christmas Visitor”. Finally, November saw my beautiful daughter Melodie turn 12. Yes – she might be 5' 9'' with size 9 feet – but she will always be my baby girl. I cannot stress enough how fast time flies and how much I cherish every minute I spend with my kids – never forget to have fun with them – especially with the simple things in life – like reading bedtime stories, wrapping up and going for walks to kick leaves in the autumn, baking cakes together and making them remember there is nothing better than family time and behaving like a big kid – hey at 43 – I’m still getting away with it now. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

AS MATT TERRY'S DEBUT ALBUM ‘TROUBLE’ IS RELEASED, HE CHATS TO AMANDA MOSS ABOUT THE YEAR SINCE HE WON THE X FACTOR
Since Matt won last year’s X Factor it’s been non-stop for the 24 year old. He had a top 3 hit with his Ed Sheeran penned winner’s single ‘When Christmas Comes Around’ before going on the UK wide X Factor Tour. From there he has been writing and recording his debut album all around the globe including Miami, LA and Scandinavia. He featured on the track ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ - the charity single for the Grenfell Tower disaster; showed off his fluency in Spanish on Enrique Iglesias’ Top 10 smash summer single ‘Subeme La Radio’ with Sean Paul and has even fronted his own radio show for Capital FM. Matt’s future is one we should all be watching closely as he prepares himself to take on the charts. He said about his upcoming album: "I'm so excited for people to hear my new material. So far people know me as the guy who won X Factor. But when I look back on this time last year, I can't quite believe how far I've come. I'm so grateful for where I am now, and I'm happier than I've ever been. I can't wait for the next step in my journey." How long did the new album take to write? About eight months or so write and produce it and narrow it down to something I am proud of What’s your favourite track? Not You because it’s different And has every song got a meaning to you? Yes it’s all about three years in
28
a relationship and then there’s a crack and then you see it break up Did X factor contribute towards the break up? No it all happened before, in fact if I hadn’t have been single I probably wouldn’t have gone on it. How did it feel returning to perform on the X Factor this year? It was amazing and nice to know I wasn’t going to get voted off!. It was nice to see everyone backstage and see the judges and hang out with Nicole. Do you keep in touch with the judges? Yes, we text all the time. Nicole always gives me feedback on my music and she is still mentoring me, absolutely What was the first thing you bought with your record company pay cheque? My car, a mini. Nothing too big. I am pacing myself! What 3 things do you want for Christmas? A top 10 hit, a top 10 album and to be with my family How will you be spending Christmas? With my family. I have time off and I am hosting it at my house Is there anything you would have like to change along your journey to where you are now? No abolsutely not, I have had abirliant year and I cant wait for 2018 and what’s to come
“
Matt co-wrote his album which centres around the full cycle of a relationship from love to heartbreak and moving on.

to own a herve leger dress or a pair of christian louboutins, without breaking the bank. We also offer a unique experience to enjoy some bubbles in the boudoir and try on a variety of high end pieces at amazing affordable prices.
A TREASURE TROVE OF COUTURE DESIGNER WEAR IS NOW OPEN IN SOUTH LIVERPOOL. JENNY KENNY DESIGNER DRESS AGENCY STOCKS ONE OFF PIECES FROM AROUND THE WORLD. Why did you set up the agency? I love fashion, more importantly I love high end fashion. I came across a store on Melrose Avenue in LA, where I have spent most of my time over the last 15 years as a singer. The shop was fab because it had amazing designer clothes 'PRE-LOVED', worn once, me and my sister loved it. We all know girls in Liverpool love their fashion especially their designers and love to have a new outfit every time they go out, most scouse girls never want to wear the same outfit twice, so I thought a designer dress agency would be perfect for this city. What do you offer? We offer amazing, quality designer clothes and accessorises at a fraction of their original price. Ladies get the opportunity 34
Luckily Liverpool girls do have amazing taste
“
You have some amazing unique pieces, how do you source them? i can't take the credit-Our shop is made up of items that customers have brought in and we sell it on their behalf. I also source items from Stylists, at the moment I have an amazing Balmain Dress that I got from an LA based stylist, the dress was worn once by a model on a Balmain shoot for vogue. Luckily Liverpool girls do have amazing taste so its thanks to our customers that we have a store full of stunning items at such fantastic price tags. What do you love about your job? I love the fact I get to be surrounding by amazing fashion everyday, as I have always really loved clothes, shoes and bags, I'm a real girly girl in that sense. It also just lovely now to be back home in Liverpool full time, and get to meet lots of lovely people, having worked away for so long. I have always been very proud to be scouser. What are your plans for 2018? A year from now we are hoping that more and more people are able to enjoy our fabulous store and who knows maybe even a mens store! As Liverpool lads also love their high end fashion.
Who is your ideal client? Someone who appreciates fashion and loves a designer label. I think if Victoria Beckham ever walked in with some of her dresses for me to sell then I think I would probably fall over. However I hear she is very busy with her own stores just now so I'm guessing she may not be popping by anytime soon, but hey a girl can always dream. Where do you get your fashion inspiration from? Well that would have to be Victoria Beckham, anybody who knows me knows I'm a massive fan, I really adore her fashion style, I always have. What will you be wearing on christmas day? A sexy santa outfit-i always dress up!!! but I have also always have a new VB dress to wear. What motivated you to start the agency? Im really lucky to have such an amazing supportive mum and dad. My mum is the most amazing person on the planet and my best friend. Its because of their constant encouragement thats helped me to take the plunge and open my own business. I also wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for my beautiful and talented sister, Alison Ward, she truly inspires me everyday, she always supports me in everything I do, she is my world.

PETE PRICE Well, may I be the first to wish you all a very merry Christmas. Thank you for supporting me over this very strange year – the year I have changed my lifestyle. I am now on Radio City 2 and Radio City Talk Sunday nights from 10pm – 1 am for three hours of speech. I am loving every minute of it and have some exciting plans for 2018.
1
1. It’s me as Father Christmas – I have so many Christmas gigs, I am trying to get in the mood but this beard tickles. 2. Lucy Meacock – this lady is one of my favourite news reporters on Granada and is becoming a dear friend. It was great to see her honoured at an awards ceremony recently. 3. The Chef – Rick Stein is one of the nicest gentlemen in the catering industry – believe me they can be very prickly, having been a chef many years ago. His new book has already become a best seller and women appear to adore him! 4. My new jacket – many years ago I found a suit made of newspaper material which became very special to me and made me stand out as a comic and got me lots of tv shows. I am now on the third version and this one really is fabulous. It is made up of my column but what makes it even more special is that it is a Philip Armstrong exclusive. These designers sell all over the world and are local lads – I can’t thank the boys enough – I love it. 5. War Horse – I have fallen in love with Joey. I have now seen the show 4 times and I think it’s the most incredible piece of theatre ever. It was a sell out run at The Empire and quite rightly so. 6. Car Share – Sian Gibson was presented with this amazing award by the Royal Television Society and well deserved it was. Both she and Peter Kay grew up listening to my show which is very flattering.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds release first new music in two years
“HOLY mOUNTAIN’
After teasing fragments of songs and art from new album, Who Built The Moon?, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds turn fans’ attention to the release of 'Holy Mountain', the first single to be taken from the new album, out today through Sour Mash. Gallagher supplements the digital release with a limited edition collectors’ 12” vinyl available from 24th November Nestled high in the tracklisting of the follow up to the platinum-selling Chasing Yesterday (2015) and featuring Paul Weller on organ, Holy Mountain is delivered with thundering self-assurance. Gallagher says: “It was one of the first things David and I did on the first week of working together. I knew instantly that it was going to be the first single. There’s so much joy in it. 38
Until the day I die, it will be one of my favourite pieces of music that I’ve ever written. It sounds great live. My kids love it, my friends’ kids all love it and I am sure ‘the kids’ will love it.” The 12” vinyl release features Holy Mountain accompanied by an exclusive, instrumental version of the track, while the B-side features Dead In The Water (Live at RTÉ 2FM Studios, Dublin). Also offered as an album bonus track, Dead In The Water catches Gallagher and keyboard player, Mike Rowe in between takes at a Dublin radio station. Such moments are destined to go unrepeated, with Gallagher vowing never to re-record it any other way. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ third album, Who Built The Moon? is released on Friday 24 November 2017, with a series of UK arena
shows announced to start in April 2018. UNLEASH YOUR INNER POWER AND SPIRIT WITH HOLISTIC HEALER PHIL STEELE IN AN INTERVIEW WITH AMANDA MOSS
m indfulness is the new buzz word for 2018. It’s the process of being aware of what is around you in the present moment and be in tune with your thoughts and feelings to enable you to enjoy your life more. There’s no better person to promote this than hypnotherapist and Reiki master Phil Steele. Working from his room in the Port of Liverpool Building at the Pier Head,Phil has a steely determination to empower you to change your life. His office is an oasis of calm and tranquility and he has an answer for all of your problems. Why suffer with issues of addiction, anxiety, bad habits and low self esteem? An hour session with Phil will guarantee to shift your mindset and approach your thoughts with positivity, the first step to creating emotions to change for the better. Its common now for Phil to have skype clients to as far away as Dubai and Los Angeles, with other therapists traveling from around the UK to learn from him. It wasn’t always this way. Five years ago he was working in retail in a senior job he didn’t enjoy and was suffering with mild depression. So he took a leap out of his comfort zone and retrained as a clinical hypnotherapist, NLP coach and Reiki master. Dad of 3 Phil said, “I was unfulfilled in life in general; stuck in a rut. This manifested itself physically as IBS and i couldn’t place the cause but once I learnt how to master the mind and my spiritual side the condition vanished. Upon refection I wasn’t happy, I was depressed and that was giving me physical symptoms. I got sick and had to take time off work and that was my turning point. I read of Viktor Frankl and his concept that if you cant change a situation, you must change yourself. I took a risk supported by my amazing wife Becca and family and went on my first hypnotherapy course and spent the 40
next few years working 9-5 in Shop Direct and then the evening fixing people's problems in my office. Fast forward to 2017 and I am now full time in hypnotherapy & Reiki and extremely grateful. I use the Law of Attraction and have the universe & God to thank for my many blessings. Phil is an inspirational speaker, invited around the world to conferences in London and Mexico promoting his message of positivity. Coupled with this, he is also completing a Masters in Psychology which give him an insight into the mind that help with his debut book 'How to Sleep' due for release in 2019. He speaks clearly and has sensible advice and an hour in his company and I felt relaxed, destressed and aware of my surroundings and ready to receive opportunities. Which is what mindfulness is all about. Phil primarily deals with anxiety, phobias and addiction, but loves the spiritual side of hypnosis under one of his brands: 11:11 Reiki. I was invited to experience a past life regression session with Phil. It started with him hypnotising me into a deep trance. WhileI was conscious of my surroundings I also felt myself floating into space. I was aware of what he was saying to me, I felt peaceful and the back of my head felt warm. He took me o a journey into my subconscious, deep into my mind, where I recall I was asked to go into a house with lots of corridors and closed doors and I had to choose a door to open. At this point in my mind it felt very dusty and I sneezed. I opened the door and there was a mirror, I was asked to look in the mirror and see a reflection. Staring back was an adolescent girl, dressed in Victorian clothes and her name was Alice. I felt somber so Phil pulled me back to a garden filled with beautiful yellow light. I found myself in a shop
in Tudor England with wooden floors and wooden cabinets. I was a housekeeper and trying to put everything in its place. My final journey took me on a ship across the ocean, arriving at a port in New York. My arms felt really heavy and cumbersome. It was the turn of the century and I was setting foot in new territories. Phil asked me what I was doing and I replied, “I am building a dream and dreaming to build.” It was a very fitting end to an interesting session in which I walked away dreaming of future business plans and expansions. Phil said of the significance of past life regression can be life changing for some. "A lady visited me with a life long back condition, in her past life she was a native American girl who was shot with an arrow, upon reawakening the pain was gone. Other clients have found missing pieces to their life such as a lady who had lost a small child in a previous life and it was a boy she often dreamed off, or the guy who experienced death in his regression. I can take you to a place in your mind and you then feel and experience any memories your mind brings forward."

YHA OFFERING KNOWSLEY’S FAMILIES IN NEED A FREE HOLIDAY Leading youth charity YHA (England and Wales) is giving families in Knowsley a free short break thanks to its new Family Breaks initiative. YHA is offering a free two-night stay and meals in one of its Youth Hostels in England and Wales to families struggling with financial hardship, disability, long-term illness, bereavement, homelessness or other challenging circumstances. to enable them to have some quality family time. YHA Family Breaks recognises the benefits of time away from the normal home environment in strengthening relationships and acknowledging that family time is the cornerstone of children’s happiness and wellbeing. The 87-year-old charity has found that families struggling with bereavement, homelessness or long-term disability and illness often struggle with financial hardship that limit their ability to take a break, at a time when they need it most to make happy memories, build bonds, and heal emotional scars. Up to two adults and their children can apply to YHA’s Family Breaks’ programme for a short break. The Family Breaks fund enables more of the UK’s 2.17 million families in the UK who are unable to afford a break at any time of the year, to benefit from much needed time away from normal life and give them the opportunity to leave behind the stresses of everyday life and bond as a family. All the Youth Hostels available within the programme are located within city, rural and coastal areas that are easily
accessible by public transport. Families will be provided with a private room and meals throughout their stay. YHA’s Family Breaks is part of YHA’s brand new Breaks Programme which aims to reach young people and families with the most challenging lives and provide them with life changing experiences. YHA’s Breaks support programme also provides funding to young people from low-income households participating in educational trips through school or youth groups. The programme has been running for more than 20 years, however has recently undergone a full review to ensure that it is benefitting the very young people who need it most. James Blake, Chief Executive of YHA (England and Wales) said: “As a charity that has worked with young people in the outdoors for more than 80 years, we understand firsthand the benefits a short break can bring to their lives, particularly those children who have challenging lives. “Although YHA is committed to providing low cost accommodation, we discovered that this was beyond the reach of the UK’s most disadvantaged families, meaning the young people most in need of support are missing out on valuable bonding time with their family and the opportunity to improve their health, education. “Following the review of our Breaks Programme, we can now reach even more children than ever, giving them the opportunity to explore the UK with their families so they can enjoy an enriching and much needed get away.” Applying for a YHA Breaks family holiday is simple and straightforward. The full eligibility criteria and a downloadable application form can be found at http://www.yha.org.uk/family-breaks-support-programme. Or, get in touch with the YHA Breaks team by emailing breaks@yha.org or calling Freephone 0800 0191 700. YHA Breaks is funded entirely through donations from members of the public Every single penny donated goes directly to helping eligible children and making a measurably positive impact on their lives. a Vina recently held a taster menu to celebrate their new flamenco dancing evenings on Friday evenings. The Spanish restaurant, based in North John Street, opened their doors to their delicious traditional tapas menu. We were invited to a sample menu which exceeded all expectations.Tapas and paellas of all kinds catering for vegetarians, carnivores and fish lovers alike. There is a large bar popular with drinkers after work, and a huge open kitchen where you can see the food being prepared. ~For starters we grazed on the salt and pepper marcadona almond while we were served he most generous sized cocktails from the bar. To accompany this we had montadito sarin a ahumada, fresh griddles bread with clove oil and garlic and topped with smoked sardines. The cheese board with cold meat platter was also a winner. For mains we had prawns in garlic with chilli but my favourite dish was the pollo envulelto; chicken breast stuffed with piquiol, wrapped in serrano and drizzled with San Si gordal oil and lemon dressing. We found the space on the table for the final dishes of croquets de cecina, cured beef croquets with piquillo puree and pollo con salsa, made up of chicken breast strips in a creamy sherry, spinach and almond sauce. Wow, I didn’t want the sauce to run out it was so good. We were advised to have four or five plates each but as the plates kept coming I was finding it harder to find room. They were absolutely delicious, as someone who wouldn’t normally choose a Spanish restaurant I am certainly swayed and would recommend this to everyone. The service is incredible, the staff smile at everyone and are helpful and friendly, making suggestions for wine to accompany the dishes. With the restaurant getting full for Christmas booking I wouldn’t hesitate to book a table to avoid disappointment during the holiday season.

asked to remain calm, but are warned to be on the lookout for a hideous fanged beast near Williamson Square, as the Playhouse presents Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery this Christmas. Employees at the famous Liverpool theatre have confirmed sightings of a terrifying houndlike creature wandering around the square, with some even suggesting they have spotted the monster in the building. There are some suggestions that the beast could be linked to the disappearance of a rich landowner by the name of Sir Charles Baskerville, although reports are unconfirmed. To allay any fears, the Playhouse has hired top private detective Sherlock Holmes and his associate Dr Watson to investigate the claims. The London-based organisation are renowned for their skills of deduction and for mysteriously funny adventures.

World War One Victoria Cross hero honoured Hugh then became a Sergeant in September 1915 and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre in February 1916 for gallant and distinguished conduct in the field, the first machine-gunner ever to receive this award. In September 1916 he became a company Sergeant-Major, then in January 1917, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and was transferred to the Canadian Machine Gun Corps, attached to the 7th Brigade Machine Gun Company. A COMMEMORATIVE PAVING STONE has been unveiled in memory of a Liverpoolborn soldier who was awarded the Victoria Cross during World War One whilst serving with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Regiment (PPCLI). The Commemorative Paving Stone scheme marks the First World War centenary commemorations, and honour men awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) during the First World War. There were 175 Victoria Cross winners in total from 11 different countries, including 70 from Canada, which has the highest number of overseas recipients. A Victoria Cross paving stone was laid in honour of Lieutenant Hugh McDonald McKenzie (1885 - 1917), who was killed in action on 30 October 1917 at Meetscheele Spur, near Passchendaele, Belgium. He was born at 62 Hunter Street in Liverpool on 5 December 1885, the second son of Jane McDonald McKenzie and James McKenzie. The family moved from Liverpool to Inverness in 1887, following the death of his father who was in the Merchant Navy working as an engineer and was lost at sea. The family then moved to Dundee around 1905 where Hugh worked for Watson & Sons, Seagate and the Caledonian Railway Company as a Carter. He was also a keen sportsman and was a founder member of the Dundee Amateur Boxing and Wrestling Club and was crowned North Scotland wrestling champion. Hugh emigrated to Canada in 1912, living with his wife Marjorie, in North Bay, Ontario.

The action for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross took place on 30 October 1917 at Meetscheele Spur, near Passchendaele, Belgium. Lt McKenzie was in charge of a section of four machine guns accompanying the infantry in an attack. Seeing that all the Officers, and most of the NonCommissioned Officers (NCO’s), had become casualties, and that the men were hesitating before a nest of enemy machine-guns, he handed over his command to an NCO, rallied the infantry, organised an attack and captured the strong-point. As machine-gun fire from a pill-box nearby inflicted further casualties on the advancing Canadians, Lt Hugh McKenzie conducted a brief reconnaissance of the position and after placing down troops in fire support positions, he led a frontal attack on the position. The pill-box was subsequently captured but Lt Hugh McKenzie was killed in action, and he received his VC award posthumously on 13th February 1918. Hugh has no known grave but is commemorated on the Menin Gate war memorial in Ypres, Belgium. Hugh’s widowed wife settled in North Bay, Ontario and married Peter Smith who was also from Dundee and had been a witness to Hugh and Marjory’s wedding. Hugh’s daughter, Elizabeth, later moved out to Canada to live with her mother until she died. Their son Alex later served in the Canadian army during WW2 and was killed in a road accident shortly after being demobbed.
In August 1914, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, Hugh McKenzie volunteered for the Canadian Expeditionary Force and enlisted in the newly formed Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI).
Tragedy continued to stalk the McKenzie’s. On 24th May 1955 a fire ripped through Elizabeth’s house in Amherstburg on the shores of Lake Erie, killing her sister-in-law and her three children. All her possessions were destroyed in the blaze, including her father’s Victoria Cross.
Serving initially as a Private, Hugh trained as a machine-gunner and was promoted steadily through the ranks. Whilst serving as a Corporal in May 1915 at St Eloi, he earned the Distinguished Conduct Medal for actions while in command of a machinegun section.
Unaware of the medals loss, the Princess Patricia’s regimental museum embarked on a quest to locate the McKenzie V.C. and any surviving relatives. Appeals were published in Canada and Scotland which eventually resulted in contact being made with his daughter in 1970.
She had just returned from Scotland, bringing with her the D.C.M. and Croix de Guerre that her father had left with relatives during the war. On learning of the loss of the V.C. the regiment organised an official replacement to be presented which she in turn donated to the Canadian War Museum. Today the V.C., D.C.M., Croix de Guerre and service medals are on extended loan to the PPCLI Museum in Calgary. When the award of his Victoria Cross was announced in the London Gazette on 13th February 1918, his surname was misspelled as "Mackenzie." The citation reads: “For most conspicuous bravery and leading when in charge of a section of four machine guns accompanying the infantry in an attack. Seeing that all the officers and most of the non-commissioned officers of an infantry company had become casualties, and that the men were hesitating before a nest of enemy machine guns, which were on commanding ground and causing them severe casualties, he handed over command of his guns to an N.C.O., rallied the infantry, organised an attack, and captured the strong point. Finding that the position was swept by machine-gun fire from a ‘pill-box’ which dominated all the ground over which the troops were advancing, Lt. MacKenzie made a reconnaissance and detailed flanking and frontal attacking parties which captured the ‘pill-box,’ he himself being killed while leading the frontal attack. By his valour and leadership this gallant officer ensured the capture of these strong points and so saved the lives of many men and enabled the objectives to be attained.” (London Gazette, no.30523). The commemorative paving stone will be unveiled in his honour at Liverpool Parish Church, at a service attended by the Rector of Liverpool, Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, military representatives and also relatives of Hugh McKenzie. Lord Mayor, Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, said: “Hugh McKenzie was a courageous soldier whose selfless actions saved many lives. He was completely devoted to his duty and Liverpool is incredibly proud of him and this is why the City is honouring him with this fitting ceremony. I am personally privileged to be able to attend and unveil this stone in his honour. “The stone will be a permanent reminder of the incredible contribution that he made to the war effort and his role in making sure that more soldiers weren’t lost.”
To help celebrate the occasion, the Club organised visits with first-team star and Alder Hey patron Baines and two of our Club Ambassadors, Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart. During the visits they were able to see first-hand the work that Everton in the Community do in the hospital, putting on fun workshops for the young patients and playing different interactive games with them to help pass the time for them and their families.
Leighton Baines recently met children at Alder Hey to mark the 10-year anniversary of Everton in the Community working with the world-class children’s hospital. Back in 2007, the partnership between the Club’s official charity and Alder Hey hospital began with EitC coaches delivering one session every week. That has now grown to them being in the hospital five days a week from Monday to Friday, giving them the chance to build on relationships with not only the staff at Alder Hey but the patients and their families, making a real impact on lives as they go through difficult times.
Everton’s current left-back said: “It’s always nice to be able to come down and see the fantastic work done here on a daily basis. The relationships that the Everton in the Community staff have developed, not just with the other staff of the hospital, but with the children as well is really inspiring. “It’s nice on a personal level that you can come in and contribute a little bit to that, too, but all the hard work and all the credit has to go to the people who are here, working tirelessly and giving up their time and energy to help improve other people’s situations and their lives.” The Everton in the Community staff, on average, engage with around 100 children per month. Their time is not only used to interact and support the
children who are either going through treatment or recovering from treatment but to provide some light relief to parents during their tough times. Jessica Robinson, Patient Experience Support Officer at Alder Hey, said: “For the past two to three years since I’ve been here the Everton in the Community coaches have been amazing. They have such an impact on the patients and the workshops they do are something they really look forward to.” Mark Dolan, Disability Development Coordinator at Everton in the Community, added: ”I can remember the first session we put on 10 years ago when we were just coming in with a bag of footballs and look how it’s developed from then when we were just running one session a week, then it was three and now it’s gone to five. “We have great relationships with all of the staff here and all the play specialists we work closely with so we’re always developing the different things we can do to lend support, like getting involved in their events and continuing to provide things like this.

People expect you to deceive them ... that sounds a bit far fetched, doesn't it?
yourself into thinking that you have a chance ... this way you stay optimistic.
Imagine you're going for an interview ... you are asked if you think you can do the job ... and you answer "I don't know really ... maybe ... I’ll give it a good go".
We pretty much all indulge in minor deceptions on a daily basis ... we do it at work, with our kids and when we’re out with friends ... we've all seen the brilliant quote 'MAY YOUR LIFE SOMEDAY BE AS AWESOME AS YOU PRETEND IT IS ON FACEBOOK’. Modern life is lived in the full glare of social media and high expectations, posed photographs or photos touched up by technology.
Give it a good go! No way would you say that as your reply ... you would tell them with some certainty that you can do it and you would reinforce this with a sincere facial expression that says trust me ... believe in me ... I won't let you down. We do it sport as well. Whether you're playing or spectating ... you start with a belief that you and your team can win ... even if the evidence of previous games indicates you're not likely to win ... you are still happy to delude 62

Okay what’s my point exactly? Well, what if you start believing all the stuff you put out there ... what if the you start to buy into your own narrative, your own stories ... and what if you start trying to live up to the image you want others to have of you?
Wow, this has all got a bit deep! All I’m really saying is don’t fall into the trap of letting cultural pressures influence you too much. Be the real you, the authentic you ... not someone that you think others expect you to be. As with most personal or social issues there aren’t any easy answers but just knowing that there are these pitfalls out there can sometimes help you to avoid them. If my mum was reading this she would say “thank you for stating the blindingly obvious” ... but modern life is complicated and sometimes we just need a little nudge to make us think about these things. The policy of “No Recourse to Public Funds” has been pinpointed as a major contributory factor in the growth of rough sleeping in the past decade - put simply it means those with no address cannot claim benefits.
CITY’S PLAN TO TACKLE HOMELESSNESS AND ROUGH SLEEPING LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL IS COMMITTED TO TACKLING HOMELESS AND ROUGH SLEEPING. Around £11 million is spent annually, largely funding more than 700 temporary accommodation beds, which last year prevented 6,000 households from becoming homeless. Although Liverpool does not have as many rough sleepers as other large cities, the number has been growing. Mayor Joe Anderson recently commissioned an independent report – Routes out of Rough Sleeping – which makes 10 recommendations to tackle the issue. Co-authored by John Finnigan, Chief Executive of the Liverpool Homeless Football League and Simon Whitter, who was once a rough sleeper, it has identified 66
The authors are also recommending a major public awareness campaign to debunk myths around homelessness, and the establishment of a new charity to ensure funds are directly benefiting those affected. Another key recommendation is for the implementation of a more integrated approach between social housing providers, local authorities, health and community organisations and specifically to establish a series of pilots such as a new social housing model for young, single people. In addition, the council is opening a new, larger severe weather shelter in the city centre and is using additional Government money to increase outreach support and hire more staff for the Housing Options service which helps find accommodation for people. The No Second Night Out already enables people to report rough sleepers so that they can be supported off the streets. Mayor Anderson said: ““We have taken great care to protect homelessness services from reductions in funding despite the huge cuts that we

have faced in recent years but it is a struggle due to welfare reforms and austerity which have left many more people vulnerable. “The vast majority of people who are rough sleeping have turned down the offer of temporary accommodation, not through their own fault but because complex needs such as substance misuse or mental health issues. We know there are also beggars that deliberately come to Liverpool that aren’t actually homeless. “This report is the most comprehensive analysis undertaken of rough sleeping in any UK city and shows that it is on the rise across the country. It is going to require a new approach in how government at central and local level engage and act with our strategic partners and at grassroots level to address the very complex health needs of these unfortunate individuals, and we are committed to acting on its recommendations.”
