WIN TICKETS TO THE REGION’S BIGGEST ICE FESTIVAL!

Liverpool Christmas Ice Festival is back at the Pier Head this winter with a super-sized triple-lane ice slide, larger ice rink and giant ferris wheel. This year’s event features even more exhilarating thrills and chills – plus a traditional Christmas market. Liverpool’s biggest ever ice slide has had an extra lane added to the highspeed 30-metre run so racers can skim along from six metres above the festival as the Three Graces whizz past. And for 2017/18 the huge covered outdoor rink, with penguin skate aids to help beginners, has been expanded by almost one third to allow for easier gliding. Visitors will be able to enjoy shopping at a new traditional Christmas market with 60 stalls, three German-style bars and a popup Bavarian food court serving specialities including its famous German sausage cooked over hot coals!  The unmissable Liverpool Christmas

Ice Festival experience continues at the Ice Bar which features a subzero room of crystal clear ice sculptures. Just grab a foil poncho, a cocktail or alcohol-free drink for the kids and chill-out in the city’s coolest bar. To warm up after a session on the ice, the Après Lounge is the place to go for mulled wine or creamy hot chocolate, while DJs provide the perfect soundtrack on Friday and Saturday nights. Festivalgoers can keep the fun going with a visit to Santa’s grotto, a Christmas fair packed with rides for all ages and a giant ferris wheel offering stunning aerial views. Liverpool Christmas Ice Festival launches on November 17th and runs through Christmas and New Year until January 7. Adult skate tickets are priced £11.50/children under 15, OAPs, students & concs £10.50/children aged 12 and under £9.50/family (2+2 or 3+1) £36; ice slide tickets are £5 for three runs and can be bought in advance by visiting www.icefestivalliverpool.co.uk

PALOMA FAITH INTERVIEW Becoming a parent is just about the biggest event in anyone’s lives, bringing with it a raft of challenges and unforeseen scenarios that potentially pose the sternest of tests. For Paloma Faith, the experience of being a new mum may have left her wondering where her next night’s sleep might ever be coming from, yet it’s brought a renewed sense of purpose and focus to her music. “I’m trying to juggle being a mother and a singer. I have no idea how I am managing, but I am somehow,” she laughs, recounting her whirlwind existence recording her fourth studio album. The 36-year old Londoner has already amassed an enviable career over the past decade that has seen her become the only female artist beyond Adele to have three

26

double platinum recordings to her name. While it’s been a road requiring plenty of hard graft, her artfully soulful sound and quirky style have undoubtedly played their part in propelling the Hackney-born star to success. The singer’s latest offering, The Architect, follows boldly in its predecessors’ footsteps, showcasing her distinctive powerful vocals that have earned comparisons with everyone from 60’s icons such as Etta James and Billie Holiday, through to the late Amy Winehouse. As she admits, she’s hoping her latest work, partly recorded in America, might yet crack the elusive holy grail of top slot in the album charts. If the slick, yet lyrically reflective lead single Crybaby is anything to go by, then the signs are indeed looking promising.

It seems the singer is enjoying a comparatively settled phase of her life living with French boyfriend Leyman Lahcine, and it’s apparent that starting a family has directly influenced her music. “I do feel my approach to music has changed since I’ve become a parent - which does have an impact. With difficult things that are happening in the world, you feel protective and want to make things comfortable for your family. “I think things are changing in our history and maybe not for the better, which is something I’m concerned about. I feel there’s a sense of duty to talk about events.” Much like any other artist in the limelight, her rise has come with the perhaps inevitable burden of being followed around

by the ever-hungry paparazzi. Everyone from Hello magazine through to the national red-top national papers has been waiting to secure pictures of her new youngster, whom she is keen to shield from un-necessary public attention. “I value my privacy more so than ever now, as it’s a real responsibility being a parent, and I want my child to know itself first rather than everyone else feeling that they know all about them.” Such determination to do things on her own terms has proved a consistent theme throughout her career, and something that has helped her stand out from the crowd.

But as she enthuses, she is not one to rest on her laurels, and ‘likes to mix things up a bit’ which is certainly the case with her latest material. While her towering vocal abilities have continued to garner contrasts with the late Amy Winehouse, it’s something Paloma is entirely at ease with. “I’m flattered by comparisons to Amy. It’s not something I am offended by, though I am quite different. “When she met me once, she asked if I played an instrument, but I said no, and she said that was a shame as she would really have liked someone like me in her group.

As she recalls of her childhood in East London, the half-Spanish artist says that she always had something of a creative streak. However, it was far from obvious that she was destined to become a singer, with her initial studies being at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

“I was a massive fan of hers, and after watching the documentary about her life, I actually wrote a song for her, Price of Fame, which is on the new album. Her death was such a tragedy,” adds the vocalist with a note of sadness.

“Growing up in Hackney, I was surrounded by lots of different types of music - from my mum, I remember listening to plenty of revolutionary music from the 60’s such as Bob Dylan, while my dad was really into jazz, which is where my interest in all that comes from.

Her down-to-earth manner is a breath of fresh air in an industry awash with egos, and her willingness to give something back was seen with her time on The Voice series. Beyond being a vocal mentor, she was determined to help those under her wing with additional songwriting classes.

“Later, when I was studying, I got into R and B dancehall as well, and originally I wanted to be dancer. Then I did my musical theatre, and I think that music just chose me,” she explains of her formative years. From her early CV that spanned everything from being a life model, cabaret dancer and bartender, to a gig as a magician’s assistant, her rich experiences have offered plenty of tales and adventures to fuel her inventive songwriting. As if to underline her determination, she famously walked out on a deal for a record contract when the agent watching her refused to stop texting on his phone. Needless to say, it was very much his loss, and the wider music industry’s gain, for Paloma then secured a major deal that set in motion her strikingly memorable debut album. To her credit, Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful? blazed a trail into the top 10, and proceeded to lodge in the album charts for the next 100 weeks. But how does she look back on it now? “Well, that was nearly 10 years ago, and it was what it was. But I think it is great that I’ve managed to sustain a career as unfortunately not many people get to make more than one or two albums these days,” reflects the singer on what she feels is now an over-saturated market. By her own admission, trying to sustain a fanbase and avoiding the trap of merely recreating a formula for previous hits has offered plenty of challenges.

As for her own career, having been nominated several times for a Brit Award, persistence paid off two years ago as she claimed a long-awaited win in the best female solo artist category. Being in an industry that is often quick to cast judgment, she felt there was a real sense of vindication in claiming the coveted accolade. “It was amazing to win the Brit Award and to finally gain some acknowledgement. I come from a long line of people that haven’t really been acknowledged for what they did. I think there are a lot of people out there doing important work, like doctors and nurses who don’t get that recognition they should.” With a major award to her name, there has been plenty of hype surrounding her latest release, bolstered by notable additions including an appearance from Samuel L Jackson and a duet with singer songwriter John Legend in the mix.

PALOMA FAITH WILL RELEASE HER EAgERLy-ANTICIPATEd NEW ALBuM ‘THE ARCHITECT’ ON NOVEMBER 17 VIA RCA RECORdS Paloma will embark on a UK arena tour next year, entertaining huge crowds across the UK and Ireland playing shows at venues including the Manchester Arena, Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena, Motorpoint Arena Cardiff, The SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Dublin’s 3Arena and London’s O2 Arena. Besides the album, fans will have to wait a little longer for her next UK tour, which kicks off next March. It’s destined to feature some of Paloma’s trademark selfdesigned sets to spark the tone for a hitpacked series of shows.  “The only reason I do what I’m doing is because I love touring – as when I’m out there I am excited and feel that I’m in the right place,” adds the engaging singer, who may well have a little more to think about with a young child in tow, yet it won’t stop her from enjoying every single moment.

“My philosophy is that Amalia is a family. We take care of everybody as part of our FAMALIA ( Family ) the LOVE to our staff, "customers-friends-family" and the fact of Making or at least trying to make everybody feel like part of something plus help the community or be part of it when we can, make our business a bit different of the others. Be happy, open minded and understand the needs of different people Is what make a business, a successful business! We actually love our customers and they can feel it. And also the beautiful "Amalia Indonesia- hotel and Beach Club in the paradise island of LOMBOK in Indonesia which is currently under construction.  Miguel says, “I went to Bali two years ago as an escape, as a holiday. When you run a restaurant it’s very difficult to have time off. I fell in love with the way of life, the people and the weather and I found a little bit of paradise that I wanted to be part of. I have a lot of friends from my home town Santa Cruz de Tenerife living and doing business in Bali-Indonesia  So after many offers and searching we partner with Miguel's very good friend Jonas for the construction and development of this amazing project by the sea. RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SINGLE MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO A

nother year is flying by and I cannot believe that it’s not too far away from Christmas – my favourite time of year which was why when I was asked by Paul & Vicky Lally from The Christmas Decorators if I would like to be a Patron of their new charity The Christmas Foundation. I jumped at the chance as quickly as a fairy flying to the top of a Christmas tree. The Charity has been set up to help under privileged/terminally ill children across the North West and to stage a Christmas party at St Georges Hall on Sunday 10th December and will be working closely with Cash for Kids for a day full of surprises and fun – plus of course a visit from the big man himself – Father Christmas! As if that wasn’t enough talk of Fairies and Christmas – also took my excitement to “Another Level” (You’ll get the joke in a minute) with the press launch of Peter Pan at The Epstein Theatre for LHK Productions … where I’ll be appearing as Tinkerbell alongside Dane Bowers (Get it now!!!) as Captain Hook! Had lots of fun at press shoot on a ship in the Albert Dock with a tremendously talented cast who I know will go on to become lifelong friends! 22

It’s very rare with the hours that I work and juggling 2 teenage kids and their social & sporting calendars that I actually get time to go out and let my hair down – but it happens once a year at the fabulous Reminisce Festival with our very own Lee Butler at the helm – it takes my best mate Lisa & I back to being 19 again – along with the rest of Sherdley Park in St Helens.. dancing to the likes of Snap “The Power” and “Castles in the Sky” … already got September 8th 2018 in next year’s diary! It has also been a bit of an emotional time for me with my youngest Melodie – starting high school … its quite scary how quickly they grow up once they start seniors … and I must admit there’s a tinge of sadness driving past her primary school at pick up time knowing that both of my kids are no longer there and turning into young adults … I know I’m not alone in that horrible feeling of “letting go” especially when it’s your youngest… I think it’s time to start lying about their age as well as my own! I have also been asked to become more involved with another amazing charity “When you wish Upon a Star” whom we worked closely with here on Superhero Day at Radio City 2 .. and I really feel they are close to my heart already having seen how children and their families with so many problems to face can still have a little sparkle in their lives. It was an absolute honour

to be asked along to their black & white ball to raise money and celebrate their amazing achievements by the lovely Kim Hughes and her team. Finally – I got to go and see my favourite musical of all time… “Joseph” at the Liverpool Empire! I think I have seen the show about 15 times – in fact it was the show that made me want to appear on stage – I remember sat in the Empire on a Brownie trip and saw that Elliott Clarke providing the choir… from that day onwards I mithered the life out of my parents to go to Elliott Clarke to be in Joseph until they finally gave in at 16 .. and low and behold – September 1991 – there I was sat on stage singing along to “Any Dream will do” ! It really is a musical that just makes you smile and sing a long – in a world full of what appears to be madness and hate – it’s so nice to be able to come away from that in the theatre – and Joe McElderry was THE best Joseph I’ve seen! So that’s about it from me for this month – now the footie season has started you’re likely to spot me on a freezing cold footie pitch supporting my son Michael, or watching netball with Melodie, or ferrying them both back and forward like any parent … like I always say to them “You guys don’t half make a lot of social arrangements for people that don’t drive a car”!!!!

ALEX REID HERO OR VILLIAN?

do you like playing the villain in panto or the hero? Despite having more fun playing the bad guy, I always prefer to be the hero, as I'd like my little girl to always see me as a good guy What do you love about panto? I hate panto and I hate you all, as none of you are worthy enough to grace my presence coz I'm so great. Yes I am the best, aren't I? You all know it? Oh yes I am?  What do you look forward to at Christmas? Joking aside, I now live for the panto, I just love it. Christmas has been a bit of a sad time for me the last few years, so giving back to various communities up and down the country, bring smiles to all, especially little people, has really helped ease some of the pain. So I'd like to thank everyone involved, from all the cast and crew, to the audience, for giving me that Christmas spirit! How has becoming a dad changed Christmas for you? I've always loved being around, playing and being silly with children, being a big kid myself, so being a dad gives me an even greater connection to all these little souls. When I see so many nasty things happen to children across the world, I just want to protect and help as many kids as I can. Especially at Christmas being a dad I want to bring as much joy and happiness to as many children as I can reach. What are you looking forward to about coming to Liverpool? I love Liverpool. I lived here in 2001 when I was a regular on Hollyoaks, so it will feel a little bit like coming back home. Mind you, that was nearly 20yrs ago, and like my home town of Aldershot, things change so much.  It'll be fun to re-explore Have you any plans to take up more acting roles? This question makes me a bit

angry, as I'm a trained actor graduating from one of the best acting schools in the country, "GSA" in 2000. But people don't realise I'm an actor due to salacious media. This year I've already had two starring roles in two cinematic releases, having premiered in London’s West End. I also had a cameo in E4s Drifters earlier this year. I'm currently involved in several TV shows and films, but I'm starting to focus on more investigative journalism behind the camera. I'm really passionate about making a difference, highlighting various issues in society. Cage fighting is a big discipline, what advice do you give to someone wanting to take it up? Easy, believe in yourself, dream, visualise, and go for it! Are you able to keep in training while you are up here? 100%, its my religion Are you more fierce about protecting your privacy these days? Yes. I naively entered into the world of celebrity with no training for what was about to happen to me, and the best intentions, to be eaten alive by the media. It also didn't help that those closest to me profited and prostituted almost every intimate and private detail that you wouldn't expect some one so close and you love to do. Fortunately I now have a wonderful fiancé whom I feel secure around that as much as I still have a public profile, I don't have to worry about what I say or do, in fear of it being used against me. What do you want Santa to bring you for Christmas? The safety of children across the world suffering atrocities of all kinds from homeless, famine, to war, and that Father Christmas can bring a smile to all of them.

HAVE YOU BEEN WONDERING WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON AT THE OLD PENNY FARTHING? Liverpool’s Royal Court  are now set to open Courtyard Bar & Kitchen, a drinking and dining space that will be open seven days a week.

With food being served from midday until 10.30pm it will be a great place to go for lunch, dinner or a late bite after a show. The building is on the site of the old Penny Farthing pub and it has been completely renovated from top to bottom. The top floor dining area is fitted with floor to ceiling glass windows giving expansive views of St George’s Hall, St John’s Gardens and Lime Street. The downstairs bar is equipped with local craft ales on tap and a wide range of international bottled beers. There is a brand new drinks terrace and garden in the old yard which provides a little oasis of greenery in the centre of town. There will be a press and guest launch at 6pm on Friday with the general public welcome in from 8pm.

Kevin Fearon, Executive Producer of Liverpool’s Royal Court, has headed up the redevelopment: “The building is looking great now and we can’t wait to welcome people in. We have been hunting around for the very best staff and we already know how good Head Chef Simon Collard is so we are very confident that it will soon be a real highlight of the bar and restaurant scene in Liverpool.” The interior design was drawn up by Martin Mark, winners of BBC’s Great Interior Design Challenge, and involved a number of theatre staff including the set building team. Some of the tables were made out of pieces of past stage show sets. ROBERTS BAKERY HOSTS SKY HIGH TEA WITH A TWIST

The sky was the limit for Cheshirebased Roberts bakery on Thursday as it launched the North West’s newest pop-up restaurant. For one day only, the family bakery brand from Northwich hosted the very highest of high teas suspended 100ft in the air During five flights - which carried 110 passengers - Roberts lovingly created a delicious afternoon tea from its brand new and innovative range. This included boozy baked Gin & Tonic Fun Buns and open sandwiches made with red hot Fiery Corn Ready-to Rolls and Roberts’ paper-wrapped, super-cool artisan Bloomers. Alison Ordonez, Innovation Director at Roberts, said: “This high-flying afternoon tea experience provided us with a perfect, high flying platform to present our new products, on pack recipe ideas and to preview some of our previously unseen and untasted products. “From The Exploratory at Roberts’ HQ, we had real fun developing the most deliciously flavoured, visually impactful mini loaves. These included one that was stuffed full of fresh courgette and mushroom and seasoned with turmeric and another

marbled with red pesto and pink peppercorns and finished with a soft creamy goats cheese centre. We also created a brilliantly bijou white loaf with a secret centre of creamy camembert cheese and rose jelly. All were served with a selection of complementary gourmet butters and oils.” This Sky High Tea with a massive twist supported the bakery’s recent rebrand and roll out of a radically new identity, positioning and product offering, which is available in selected Asda, Morrisons and Coop stores across the UK. Stuart Spencer-Calnan, Managing Director of Roberts, said: “We rebranded and relaunched with a highly innovative identity and product range just six weeks ago and what better way to celebrate our reception and feedback than with afternoon tea party in the sky? “We’re truly committed to innovation so it also gave us a perfect platform to offer all 110 guests a totally unique experience. We all had a great time enjoying the most al fresco afternoon tea and simply spectacular views of the city.” Roberts partnered with Events in the Sky - part of the global Dinner in the Sky Group, which operates in 50 countries worldwide. LIVERPOOL STUDENT SMASHES SECOND WORLD RECORD WITH MUSICAL OUTFIT of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, part of Birmingham City University.

A student from Allerton in Liverpool

has once again mixed his love of both music and athletics to break another Guinness World Record; running the fastest marathon dressed as a musical instrument.

Donning a custom-made viola costume, Alistair Rutherford – a.k.a. The Running Viola and studying at Birmingham City University’s Royal Birmingham Conservatoire – ran the Birmingham International Marathon on Sunday 15 October with a time of three hours, 20 minutes and 33 seconds – comfortably beating the previous record by almost an hour (53 minutes and 45 seconds). This achievement comes after Alistair broke the half marathon record earlier this year. Created by Merseyside-based designer Brian D Hanlon, Alistair’s outfit is made from lightweight Plastazote foam and comes complete with a striking headpiece that mimics the shape of the viola’s neck and pegbox. Meanwhile, fellow students at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire were serenading Alistair and the thousands taking part in the marathon – and half marathon – from the sidelines, performing two world premieres specially commissioned for the occasion. The brass dectet and a massed viola work were arranged by Dr. Joe Cutler, Head of Composition, and the Composition Department at the Conservatoire Alistair Rutherford hopes to raise at least £4,000 for the collaborative UKSouth African project, Cape Gate MIAGI Centre for Music & Birmingham Conservatoire – or ARCO, which is also the name for the technique of playing a stringed instrument with a bow. ARCO has seen 24 strings students aged between eight and 17 in South Africa selected to participate in weekly instrumental Skype lessons, given by academics, current students and alumni

36

ARCO aims to provide the benefits and life changing inspiration of music to children in the most deprived of circumstances. As well as providing transformative music education activities, Conservatoire staff and students – including Alistair – have been acting as role models for vulnerable youngsters living in Soweto, a Johannesburg township deeply affected by poverty and crime. In fact, funds raised from his world record attempt will enable his pupil, Njabulo Nxumalo, aged 17, to fly over to the UK next month, along with Kwanda Buthelezi, aged 13, and Mbali Phato, aged 12, and perform in the ARCO Concert on Saturday 18 November as part of the second Cecil Aronowitz Viola Competition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Meanwhile, Alistair’s marathon journey was streamed live to the ARCO youngsters, so they could cheer him on from the other side of the world. 21-year-old Alistair said: “I cannot thank everyone enough at the Royal Birmingham Conserivatoire and ARCO, along with my family and friends, for their unwavering support throughout this challenge. Running the Birmingham International Marathon wasn’t easy, particularly in my costume, but it was great to have them cheering me on along the route – whether in person or virtually – as well as the people of Birmingham, who came out in force to support all the runners.” “I am planning on resting The Running

Viola for the moment, unless someone breaks my records! I’m looking forward to my work coming to frutition though, when my ARCO student comes to Birmingham in November.” Running the Birmingham International Marathon is just one of several fundraising events the postgraduate student has organised in aid of ARCO. Last year, the violist ran the equivalent distance of the length of South Africa’s coastline, clocking up 1,739 miles (2798 kilometres) by the time he flew out to Johannesburg for the first ARCO Festival, where Conservatoire students and staff met and performed with their students in person for the first time. Meanwhile, earlier this year, he ran the Liverpool Half Marathon, the Wirral Half Marathon and the Simplyhealth Great Birmingham 10K, all in his viola costume. Alistair has been further supported by his athletics club, Birmingham-based Birchfield Harriers. One of the most successful athletics clubs in Britain – having being represented at every single Olympic Games bar one since 1908 – they became the first club in history to win both the men’s and women’s Premier League titles last year. Alistair is trained by Senior Men’s Distance Coach, Dave Lawrence and in August this year, The Running Viola competed in the 5,000 metres at the British Athletics League Premiership, where the Senior Men’s Team won for the third time in a row. Birchfield Harriers are based at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium which is in the running to be the host venue for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and where the city’s marathon will commence.  Alistair began running in Liverpool in 2013, when he joined Mossley Hill Athletic Club. You can support Alistair’s world record attempt via his JustGiving page. You can also watch videos of Alistair training in his costume. I nternational superstar and

philanthropist Dolly Parton has released a new film to encourage more people to get involved with Story Starters - a new volunteer-led programme that provides one-to-one language and communication support to early years’ children. The programme has recently been launched in Merseyside and has its first Story Starter volunteers placed in local settings to help ensure that children have the skills to start primary school ready to read. Story Starters is a new collaborative project between national children’s literacy charity Beanstalk, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and LuCid (The ESRC International Centre for Language and Communicative Development) which aims to give children the support they need to develop their language and reading skills. Research has shown that children who benefit from high-quality support in their early years start school on average three months ahead in their literacy and language skills, compared with children who don’t.  The programme has been made possible by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, whose Dream Fund chose Story Starters to receive £1 million in funding in January 2017. The first setting to join the programme

on Merseyside and to receive its trained Story Starter volunteer is Northway Primary in Wavertree. Joanne Tait is the first Story Starter volunteer to be placed on Merseyside: “I am thrilled to be the first Story Starter volunteer in Liverpool and to get started in Northway Primary. I am really excited to have the opportunity to help the nursery children get into the world of books.” Story Starter volunteers will visit children twice a week and support three children for 20 minutes each. The sessions are fun, interactive and hugely beneficial to the children receiving extra support. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library will provide every Story Starter child with high-quality, professionallyselected, age-appropriate books. These books will be sent directly to both the early years setting and the home of each Story Starter child, ensuring that they can enjoy the magic of stories at home as well as when they are with their Story Starter. Find out more about becoming a Story Starter volunteer: you can find out more about becoming a Story Starter by visiting www.storystarters.org.uk, or calling Beanstalk on 0845 450 0301.

Following the opening of top TV chef Gino D`Acampo’s latest eatery in Liverpool, Lifestyle was invited to taste the new menu REVIEW BY Neil Woods

W e were greeted by a chilled glass of Prosecco from their dedicated prosecco bar. The Bar and restaurant were heaving, Gino’s many pictures with celebrities looked down at us from photos on every wall. We had only heard good things about the food and it genuinely lived up to all the up to the hype. Staff are in abundance, and are very attentitive All of the food on the menu gives you an insight to the inspiration behind the many various mouth watering choices on offer and what’s special

about this restaurant is that the menu gives reference to ingredients which you can purchase on the way out We started off with the chicken liver pate and the arancine - crispy mushroom risotto balls with buffalo mozzarella in a tomato and red pepper sauce. Simply delicious. For the mains we had an 8oz Aberdeen Angus Sirloin Steak served with cherry tomatoes, rocket and pecorinicheese with balsamic and hand cut chips. The second dish was the slow cooked braised beef in red wine served with touted ciabetta. I

like that the long kitchen is entirely open plan so you can see the chefs freshly prepare your meals Gino D`Acampo restaurant also has a fantastic games and function room for private parties downstairs built in the old bank vault which is equipped with its own dj decks and bar to keep the party swinging all night. The decor lis finished to the  highest standard and we left feeling like we had just been treated to a meal from the man himself as photos of himself with his celebrity friends drape many of the walls. Liverpool now has some of the best nightlife and restauarants anywhere in the UK and we will most definitely be returning shortly.

LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE FULFILLED A DRIVING AMBITION TO EMBARK ON A GOLFING BREAK WITH Q HOTELS AND HAD AN WONDERFUL TIME WHICH WAS PAR FOR THE COURSE! The hotel we selected was the

Telford Hotel & Gold Resort,  a  short hour and a half drive from Liverpool . There are 114 tasteful decorated four-star rooms with stunning views. From the moment we arrived the staff – from the receptionist, through the restaurant team to the golf professionals – were among the friendliest I can recall anywhere. Small wonder those of the 300-strong golf membership with whom I interacted seemed so happy.  “Congratulations! The greens are great!” said one in passing to the club’s director of golf, Matt Robbins, a man whose affability and laid-back demeanour disguises his desire to ensure everything is the best it can be for golfers – an ethos that seems to pervade this QHotels property.  As for the course, well, it’s everything one could want from a resort course: challenging without being overly punitive, and above all, enjoyable. One of my playing partners developed a block as we went round, but even when it materialised he was able to swallow his pride, take his

punishment, and find a shot back into play. An expanse of 170 acres allows for that generosity.  The eighth is the course’s signature hole; an aesthetically pleasing dogleg, it also requires a shot over water to a large green which slopes back to front. There are more spectacular views to enjoy on the 12th, while the tough, par-five 17th makes you work hard to pick up shots on the home stretch. It made for a very pleasant four hours with excellent company, a decent track and some sunshine  as an additional bonus – and when you’re away for a golf break what more could you ask for? An ice-cold beer? Well, we had that too on the Gorge bar terrace – which acts as the clubhouse bar, away from the restaurant. It’s well patronised by the golfers and adds a genuine clubhouse feel which many golf hotels – with a mixture of golfers and business guests – don’t possess. For golf lovers this is the perfect Christmas gift, the hotel beds are

extremely comfortable, the restaurant food was delicious and we felt refreshed and revitalised after our fabulous stay.

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dock Modern dance music and classical symphonies share some important similarities. Both revel in the beautiful simplicity of a formulaic format, both are much larger than life in their scale, intended to be heard in large spaces at high volume and both are

ultimately anthemic, with the intended purpose of lifting and rousing listeners and bringing about a form of spiritual unity from a shared euphoric experience. Cream Classical returns to its hometown on Friday 24th November with the opening performance of the three night Steel Yard event at Central Dock in Liverpool Waters.  Steel Yard is the name given to the stunning twenty metre high structure originally designed and built for Creamfields in 2016. Its subsequent success and popularity with dance music fans has changed the game where music festival production is concerned, and while, at first glance, the setting for this much awaited orchestral performance might not appear to be as spectacular and awe

inspiring as the previous shows in the neo-gothic splendour of Liverpool’s beautiful Anglican Cathedral, it offers the show’s production team and the performers themselves far more creative scope.  Producing, rehearsing and performing a complicated show in a busy, working cathedral brings with it plenty of aesthetic and logistical limitations which simply don’t exist in the context of Steel Yard. While it might have been perfectly acceptable as far as the Archbishop was concerned to project the famous Cream logo onto ‘God’s living room wall’, it is apparently unthinkable that evensong and choir practice should ever be disrupted for the sake of things like orchestra rehearsals and soundchecks. The moveable steel behemoth will be brought to life by the kind of newly developed automated sound and lighting technology that will eclipse any lack of Giles Gilbert Scott’s vaulting sandstone arches and iconic red phone box. The Friday night show will run from 5pm til midnight and, as well as much anticipated DJ sets by Faithless and Tall Paul, the event will also feature sets by Cream’s own original and much loved resident, Paul Bleasdale and the legendary godfather of the British house music scene, Danny Rampling.

“Political punk rock veterans and socially conscious rockers.” – The FADER

Since unleashing their seminal 1996 debut, Die for the Government, ANTIFLAG has empowered and emboldened their listeners for two generations with a timeless punk spirit. With today’s chaotic political landscape stemming from the controversial 2016 presidential election, the Pittsburgh, PA quartet (Justin Sane [vocals], Chris#2 [bass, vocals], Chris Head [guitar, vocals], and Pat Thetic [drums]) felt the time was right for ANTI-FLAG to release their most definitive offering American Fall (out November 3rd, 2017 on Spinefarm Records). "This song is a call to arms. We must challenge racism and hatred everywhere we see it:  at school, at work, at the dinner table with our families...absolutely everywhere.  If you still stand by the Trump regime after Charlottesville, you are complicit. “Give ANTI-FLAG their due: They’re pretty relentless. For more than 20 years, the spirited Pittsburgh punks have worked tirelessly to make their music count for something more than cheap thrills and mindless rebellion.” – Consequence of Sound “They [ANTI-FLAG] have stayed quixotically devoted to the idea that punk music can affect real political change; mountains of evidence to the contrary have never seemed to dull their enthusiasm, and bless them for that.” – PopMatters “We dig these angry, passionate American punks.” – NME “Riotous Pittsburgh stalwarts” – SPIN “Top-notch punk” – Alt Press “Musically, everything flows together excellently, the group not sacrificing their supercatchy punk for their message. DARREN VISION F o c u s   v   M u l t i   T a s k Ok here goes ... I'm taking a deep breath and diving straight into this hot topic ... multi tasking is inefficient ... there I've said it.

radio and it really resonated with me.  I was multi tasking at the time so I don't even recall where I heard it!

I know there is stereotypical stuff out there that says women can multi task and men can't ... I'm pretty sure I've used this as an excuse to not do something, you know "I'm a man I can't do two things at once".  But take a moment to think about it.

The theory is that each day you make an appointment with yourself to do stuff. Yes that's right, you book 30 mins in your diary ... it can be your real diary or your imaginary diary ... but you reserve 30 minutes.  If someone calls you say you're busy.  In this time where you've made an appointment with yourself you think about the important stuff ... it is a distraction free 30 minutes ... with no tele, no smartphone etc.  And you think about stuff, real stuff.

Often multi tasking is unavoidable ... you have to do a lots of things at the same time ... but what about the important things ... surely the important things need full concentration.  If we're not careful we don't just end up doing lots of things at the same time ... we end up doing lots of things at the same time, badly. I came across this theory the other day whilst listening to the 52

Ok this won’t work for lots of people ... telling a hungry two year old that mummy is having her ‘thinking time’ just sounds plain ridiculous ... but the theory is sound ... first of all you have to

accept that you need thinking time and then you have to find your own way to create that thinking time.  Sitting and thinking is good for you ... don’t feel guilty about doing nothing because often doing nothing is when you have the good ideas. Create new plans, think of new goals and experiences, clear out some old thinking, it is what makes us unique. Our Thinking controls our Behaviour and our Behaviour determines our Outcomes We are Human Beings not Human Doings ... treat yourself to some thinking time. If you have any questions about with this article please drop me a line and we can discuss your thoughts ... and that will count towards your thinking time!  Email me at darren@dasala.co.uk or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren Email darren@dasala.co.uk or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren

The 73,000 sq ft office was purchased by a partnership between long term business associates Craig Blackwell of Prospect Capital and Martin Wilcocks of Wilcocks & Wilcocks. Plans for the 1970s building include a complete overhaul of the building’s façade, the installation of feature lighting throughout and under new plans a roof terrace. Craig Blackwell commented “The work on the site for the current 96 apartments is all ahead of schedule and will retain the unique porthole styling in line with the architect’s original contemporary and minimalist vision. This building sits in the heart of one of the great streets in the business district, Water Street with views of the world famous waterfront. We now plan to add a roof terrace to residents can enjoy a fantastic space with breathtaking views of world heritage sites.”

WIRRAL SINGER SONGWRITER TABITHA JADE IS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH AS SHE SETS HER SIGHTS ON A HUGE MUSIC CAREER How did you discover your talent? I started singing around the house when I was 11, and I wanted to play an instrument to accompany my singing then tried the guitar which I enjoyed.  I then started learning you tube covers to develop. Within a relatively short period i sensed that I was improving, and then started performing to family and friends. When i was 12 my Dad, suggested that if i wanted to have a career i should sing my own songs, so I started to song write and wrote my first song called Butterfly. From there, i started to perform in local open mic, bars, and festivals, i then encouraged my sister to also sing and play the piano, and we have progressed to a band playing gigs all over the UK. Tell us about your achievements to date  I was the youngest to ever play Liverpool's Sound City at 14yrs. I won the National Songwriting U16 Champion 2015, voted by Sony and Universal in Camden London / with Eliza.  I was aTeenStar and Open Mic Finalists I won the  Major Online Radio Awards 2017 Best Female Pop / Urban I won the Best of British Unsigned Music Awards 2017 Best Female Nominee I was hailed as  6Town Radio One To Watch 2017 Wirral Battle of The Bands 2016 Winner / with Eliza I supported Happy Mondays, The Farm, into The Ark, East 17, UK's Leading Amy Winehouse Tribute. I played at Sunniside Live, LIMF, Chester Live, Cavern, The Bedford (London..where Ed Shearan's perfromed). LIMF Academy Top 20 2017 I am playlisted across UK online and local radios and have multiple national airplay BBC Radio 1Xtra, live interview with DJ Target / with Eliza I was invited to attend an intimate Q&A session in Liverpool with Craig David / with Eliza 56

I formed a 4/5 pc band, that have playing together for 3years Who have you worked with? No one famous....ha!, my sister we write and play together in band, then mainly emerging producers.  What is the dream? I would like to continue writing and peforming with my band internationally, hopefully to have a long career making music.....doing something that i enjoy! Tell us about the tour you are on I am supporting Amy Winehouse Tribute in the Northwest Cities, , and then I have a few local gigs in  Liverpool, and then down to  London, i enjoy playing in new  Cities and venues,  where i can  get feedback to my music. What are the plans for the next  6 months I have joined LIPA sixth form, I am learning a lot of new skills,  so for now its building on these,   and will continue writing  and working on improving. How will you be spending christmas? The only way i know, at home with  my parents and 2 sisters, and 2 dogs. I hope to  have a few gigs around Xmas time too, its fun  working around that time, and  singing the odd Xmas song in my sets...ha. What collaborations would  you like to do ? My ultimate would have been Amy Winehouse, I have watched her life story movie and studied her, it was such a tragic end, she was amazing, also Drake would be great, i really like his vibe.

We have a very simple commitment. To help advertisers’ businesses to thrive and to make a difference in readers’ lives by providing the highest quality content, services and articles that entertain, engage and enlighten. Lifestyle Monthly Magazine has been established since 2008.  It is an awardwinning Business 2 Business and Business 2 Consumer monthly magazine publication that was an instant success. The first issue had 20 advertisers and 48 pages.  We are now running at between 64 and 68 pages per issue.

ExECuTIVE SuMMARy A Lifestyle Monthly franchise grants you a license to operate under our brand and offer our products and services to build yourself a successful business that you will manage and run. As a franchisee you will make an initial investment to cover the cost of training and establishing the business and you will continue to pay an ongoing monthly fee. This really is a business in a box As a franchisee you will become part of the community and work to connect local people with the businesses and organisations that serve them.  OuR MISSION Driven by a keen appetite for expansion, the Lifestyle Monthly Brand is bucking all trends by launching new events, and planned new magazine franchises across the UK. We are limiting our franchises to just 10 nationwide initially over the next ten years so that we can concentrate on training up a quality brand that works for you.  Each magazine will have a local publisher who acquired a territory under a franchise agreement.   Our business plan has been constructed to sell 2 in the first year to ensure we can dedicate our time to train you efficiently.   The business will grow organically, with 3 in the second year.   We plan to have a break in our franchisee recruitment every three

It is by far the most successful independent magazine in Merseyside.   Its unique selling point is its high profit events based around the magazine, such as the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, Liverpool Fashion Week, Manchester Fashion Week and the UK Fashion & Beauty Awards. As owner of a Lifestyle Monthly Magazine franchise you would get to use our proven business model and established reputation.   No experience is required.  You will receive full training and on-going business support allowing you to create the work/life balance that suits you. Make this your year if you are looking for a business opportunity with an established brand providing local and national businesses with high impact exposure, whilst supplying your community with a quality magazine devoted to fashion, beauty, celebrities, and aspirational living.  OuR SERVICES Editorial content - we will supply all your editorial pages and show you how to put a magazine together every month Advertising space - we will show you how to put together a running order to slot in the advertising with the editorials We train you in selling advertising We motivate you into gaining confidence to speak in public at networking events We show you where to get your sales leads We train you in event management for business awards, networking lunches and fashion events

OuR COMPETITIVE AdVANTAgES Lifestyle Monthly Magazine events integrate the power of Lifestyle brand with outstanding entrepreneurs and engaged audiences to bring the magazine and website to life around popular fascinating events.   Whether in the form of week-long shows, multi-sponsor forums, or singlesponsor round table dinners and networking breakfasts, Lifestyle Monthly events are characterised by meaningful content and first-class execution from a dedicated team of professionals giving us different dynamics to other magazines that increase engagement, and in turn increase revenue. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF OuR FRANCHISE? Low start-up investment A challenging career  A home based business with low overheads and family friendly working hours Access to existing account customers No industry experience required, simple to operate with minimal paperwork Ongoing support including coaching and mentoring from experts at head office plus support with implementation of marketing plans and promotional initiatives and key staff recruitment. The licence to run Lifestyle Monthly magazine in your territory Nothing beats the feeling of running your own business.  However, it’s also good to know there’s support and guidance available when you need it.  Be a voice, not an echo, in your community. WHO ARE WE LOOKINg FOR? • We expect the following qualities in  our franchisees: • Business and entrepreneurial skills • Capable of planning and executing  your daily workload • Ambitious and tenacious • Passionate about the magazine • Confident and self motivated  • Hard working with a positive can do  attitude • Creative

ED ITOR’S L AST WORD I recently received an email from a student wanting to work with Lifestyle  magazine. It’s not an uncommon request but what stood out was her wording.  She said, ‘To me, the rise of online publications often spells the death of  print media, which is why I think your magazine is particularly important,  as you have maintained your physical presence, despite the flooding of the market with online publications.”

Lifestyle monthly www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk @amandalifestyle

There’s an ongoing debate about whether print media is dead. Let me tell you that I am living proof it is most certainly not. On the contrary, as I approach the 10th anniversary of Lifestyle magazine, advertising sales are on the increase. Perhaps the most important benefit of print media is tangibility. Among the reasons why many people prefer print is to do with the feel of the paper, having it in their hands means that the content is real, it exists. Print media is unique in its capability to trigger a number of senses; of course the feeling of paper and the smell of the ink. Paper can change colour when heated or put in front of a light, an ad can feel rough as sand or smooth as silk, all adding to the sensory experience of the advertising. Triggering multiple senses adds to the effectiveness of print advertising. The key to successful marketing is engagement. Drawing your customer in through attention-grabbing content before rewarding them with a worthwhile offer or service. Print media are a trusted source for news and other information and consumers take time to read a door drop leaflet, magazine or customer magazine.  University studies have proven that on average people will spend 15 seconds  browsing a page online as opposed to almost 50 seconds reading a page in print. People process information in different ways and these studies prove that reading magazines in print maintains their concentration and capacity for reading longer articles and therefore processing more information. Someone is more likely to get engrossed in a printed feature rather than one online and this structure helps people retain content better. Can you remember the exact contact of what you browsed online this morning? If you picked up a magazine is there a feature that stood out that you can remember the content? Exactly. Lifestyle magazine goes from strength to strength as we are dedicated to promoting small businesses and their successful journey. Advertising is all about telling a story. It is fitting then that we celebrate our 10th anniversary at the 9th annual Liverpool Lifestyle Awards on 3 March 2018. Nominations are flooding in, ensure you nominate someone or a business you think is deserving. After all, it’s all good publicity  Lifestyle is all about you.

The policy of “No Recourse to Public Funds” has been pinpointed as a major contributory factor in the growth of rough sleeping in the past decade - put simply it means those with no address cannot claim benefits.

CITY’S PLAN TO TACKLE HOMELESSNESS AND ROUGH SLEEPING LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL IS COMMITTED TO TACKLING HOMELESS AND ROUGH SLEEPING. Around £11 million is spent annually, largely funding more than 700 temporary accommodation beds, which last year prevented 6,000 households from becoming homeless.   Although Liverpool does not have as many rough sleepers as other large cities, the number has been growing. Mayor Joe Anderson recently commissioned an independent report – Routes out of Rough Sleeping – which makes 10 recommendations to tackle the issue. Co-authored by John Finnigan, Chief Executive of the Liverpool Homeless Football League and Simon Whitter, who was once a rough sleeper, it has identified 70

The authors are also recommending a major public awareness campaign to debunk myths around homelessness, and the establishment of a new charity to ensure funds are directly benefiting those affected. Another key recommendation is for the implementation of a more integrated approach between social housing providers, local authorities, health and community organisations and specifically to establish a series of pilots such as a new social housing model for young, single people. In addition, the council is opening a new, larger severe weather shelter in the city centre and is using additional Government money to increase outreach support and hire more staff for the Housing Options service which helps find accommodation for people. The No Second Night Out already enables people to report rough sleepers so that they can be supported off the streets. Mayor Anderson said: ““We have taken great care to protect homelessness services from reductions in funding despite the huge cuts that we

This report is the most comprehensive analysis undertaken

have faced in recent years but it is a struggle due to welfare reforms and austerity which have left many more people vulnerable. “The vast majority of people who are rough sleeping have turned down the offer of temporary accommodation, not through their own fault but because complex needs such as substance misuse or mental health issues. We know there are also beggars that deliberately come to Liverpool that aren’t actually homeless. “This report is the most comprehensive analysis undertaken of rough sleeping in any UK city and shows that it is on the rise across the country. It is going to require a new approach in how government at central and local level engage and act with our strategic partners and at grassroots level to address the very complex health needs of these unfortunate individuals, and we are committed to acting on its recommendations.”
