start on her extensive philanthropy work. Oprah also boasts an eponymous cable TV channel (OWN) and is a special correspondent for the current affairs show 60 Minutes.

When she stood on stage at the Golden Globes in January, proclaiming “a new day has come”, Oprah Winfrey became the leading charge for the #MeToo and #timesup movements, but in the process seemingly arrived as a contender for the 2020 us presidential election! For someone who has conquered most things in life, it does however appear that politics will remain some distance from her. “I’m not built for a career in Washington,” she immediately quipped back at speculation that she could topple Trump, but that doesn't mean the chat show goddess can't still dish out her trademark wisdom when it comes to the seismic shifts within Hollywood and around the globe. And when Winfrey talks, people listen. “It is a significant moment in history for all of us,” she said, swiftly returning the conversation so sexual equality. “Society, as an entity, will never be the same again, and will never revert to how it was. It can't and it won't.” To her millions of followers, Oprah is already the leader. Having risen from a life of dire poverty and abuse, the irrepressible 64-year-old has gone on to achieve such impressive feats, that even those born into wealth can only stand back in admiration at her success. Off the back of her hugely successful talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, she has produced and starred in films, co-authored numerous books, and has become a self-help icon. And let’s not even 8

There are many theories to the secret of Winfrey’s success, but even the greatest stroke of luck is useless without conviction. And if she has one single talent she possesses that puts her above the rest, it’s an ability to turn the negative into a positive; transforming heartache into redemption. “I do believe, the lowest moments in your life, the deepest pits where you don't understand it then, when you've been around now for as long as I have, you know every single moment of emotional destitution, where you couldn't see a way out… that everything single moment is a building block and another step in your journey to being who you are meant to be and you are meant to become,” she confides. She may have come from humble beginnings, but Winfrey is only human, and one could forgive her for succumbing to some of the fickler aspects of her success. But even after decades of schmoozing in Hollywood, Winfrey hasn’t budged an inch on her values or integrity, and remains utterly base about the phenomenon known as ‘celebrity’. “Fame is an interesting state of mind because you yourself don't change; it's everyone around you who changes,” she says, adding knowingly, “It's who you are within before the fame; that becomes magnified.” This attitude serves Winfrey well, considering the sheer pressure she has been under having interviewed some of the biggest names in both showbusiness and politics live on air. “I don't think I've ever really become starstruck because I tend to live like we are all the same, because we are. But I also can't get away from the fact that we all have heroes we look up to, and for me, I’ve had a few moments…” says Winfrey. “Nelson Mandela was a very

defining moment for in what he represents for freedom and equality. And Sidney Poitier, because I had watched him my whole childhood and his winning the Oscar in 1964 was earth-shattering for me. And I always remember Diana Ross. That was an overwhelming moment, a lot of tears, a lot of hyperventilating, because I had dreamed of being a Supreme!” The chat show mogul cum actress hopes to have secured another generation of fans after starring in Disney’s fantasy epic A Wrinkle in Time, about Meg, a teenage girl (played by newcomer Storm Reid) on a cosmic journey to locate her missing dad (Chris Pine). Helping her navigate the universe are three celestial beings able to ‘wrinkle’ time and space: Mrs Which (Winfrey), Mrs Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon). Despite the somewhat fantastical plot and extensive CGI, the message of the film is wonderfully simple: that there is value in us as individuals, and that we are capable of achieving everything we dream. It’s an ideal that Winfrey believes is vital in the quest to empowering teenage girls. “There's so much self-doubt at that age, there's insecurity and a lot of susceptibility to outside influences, be it bullying or magazines or something else. And through all that noise you have to find a way to hear your own voice and learn to trust that voice,” Says Winfrey. “When Mrs Which says to Meg, ‘You have to find your own frequency,’ what a remarkable lesson that is for all of us, especially today with social media. There are so many other frequencies happening around us. You have find your own and have faith and loyalty in that - that will serve you better than anything in your life and anything becomes possible. “I think that’s the kind of positivity we need to embrace and move forward with… and I truly believe we will.”

THE SALON Audiences of Liverpool – get your rollers at the ready, as Drew Quayle’s hilarious and critically acclaimed comedy play The Salon makes a welcome return to Liverpool this month. Starring TOWIE’s Harry Derbidge, Radio City’s Leanne Campbell and Brookside and Benidorm’s Philip Olivier, it will be at The Epstein Theatre from Mon 21 – Sat 26 May. For those that want perfect nails, a relaxing massage or a perfect perm then there are plenty of places to go, but for jealousy, bitchiness and gossip look no further than ‘Curl Up and Dye’. The average day at this Liverpool hair and beauty salon involves shouting, crying and singing, with the odd beauty treatment thrown in for good measure. Carol wants to find true love, Tia wants to be a pop star and Sheila just wants a toy boy. Mix in a camp-asChristmas boss, a plastic gangster who is trying to take over the salon, a hysterical drama queen, and a whole lot of vodka, and it all adds up to a brilliantly funny night out.

ACTRESS SALLY LINDSAY TALKS TO LIFESTYLE ABOUT HER ROLE NARRATING THE STORY OF ONE OF THE UK’S MOST SIGNIFICANT FEMINISTS, EMMELINE PANKHURST IN AN INTERVIEW WITH AMANDA MOSS

How did this come about? I was called up by an old friend who is a producer and they have been trying to make a documentary for years and they kept getting knocked back. Finally the BBC said yes and I was asked to narrate the story. I have done some of the research into this woman and she is incredible. Basically women wouldn’t be where they are today without her. She was more than a leader, a general, she changed the the lives of hundred of thousands of women, if not more. It was an amazing and emotional experience to be part of the making of this documentary Did you learn anything from it? Very much so, at times I was choked up but what she had to endure to get what she achieved. She recognised that women can only achieve change through other women. She was fighting for the rights of pregnant women in the 12

workhouses. Men would never have changed that but she empowered so many women and brought about change, it is life changing for everyone. Are you a feminist? Yes I consider myself so. I am raising twin boys, they’re seven and a half. Don’t forget the half, that’s very important. I am teaching them everyone is equal and I am mindful about the things I say to them aren’t sexist either. My boys will be equal to any girl. How are you finding working with raising a family Well it’s what we do isn’t it? We juggle and we get on with it. I am very lucky in that I split the childcare 50-50 with my husband. He is away on tour at the moment (he’s a drummer) for 2 weeks and when he comes back I’ll get back to work.

You were in panto last year in Liverpool, how was it? It was my first ever panto and I loved it. I made some really good friends including Leanne Campbell and Jane Joseph, in facts we’re going on a girlie weekend away soon! We’re big fans of Mount Pleasant, do you miss it as much as we do? Ah yes of course. We are all baffled as to why it wasn’t recommissioned as everyone has so much affection for it. We all still meet up though and it was good to go out on a high. That said, if Sky were to call us and say will you make a new series I have no doubt that everyone would drop everything and do it. Emmeline Pankhurst: The Making of a Militant and it goes out on BBC One in the North West at 7.30pm on Friday 8th June.

‘ S TAT E O F T H E N AT I O N ’ R E P O RT R E V E A L S N O RT H WEST’S BIGGEST WORRIES creating food banks, providing mental health support in communities, helping to tackle crime, or even just being there for someone to talk to when they’re lonely. Seven in ten people across the North West believe their standard of living is worse than that of their parent’s generation according to Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland’s ‘State of the Nation’ report.

The situation has deteriorated so much in recent times that a further 200 extra Rotary clubs across the country have been set up in the past year to help tackle the challenges facing society.

The report has examined the social and community issues affecting locals in the North West along with a barometer on how people feel life compares now with previous generations.

Amanda Watkin, general secretary for Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, commented: “We’re often faced with stories of people suffering hardship at a nationwide level and our local issues may sometimes feel overlooked. That is why we’re dedicated to focusing on projects within our local community to help improve the quality of life for those nearby and identify key areas where we can really make a difference.”

The report found the biggest issues that residents of the North West region worry about included mental health (60%), crime affecting their local community (50%), supporting those who are homeless (53%) and experiencing poverty (51%). It also found that two thirds of locals felt lonely, an issue normally associated with older people but in fact, the highest percentage of people affected were aged between 16 – 29 followed by those aged 30 – 44. It also found that today’s generation doesn’t have the same sense of community spirit, with nearly half of respondents (47%) claiming they don’t even know their neighbour’s name. Rotary clubs across the North West have been working to help tackle some of these big social issues with initiatives including youth employment projects, 14

The report also found that two thirds of people believe their standard of living is worse than that of their parents’ generation and the report also revealed that nearly all of us feel bogged down by the stresses and strains of modern day life (92%), while we think it’s now harder than ever to manage our finances (42%), get on the property ladder (40%) or maintain a ‘job for life’ (40%). For more information about Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, or to join your local club visit www.rotarygbi.org/

• Almost half (45%) said people looked out for each other more years ago •42% even think their folks were in better shape when they were younger • A further 32 per cent said their work/life balance was poor, while 34 per cent said the burden to have it all made them feel under pressure. • A staggering number of us wish we were living in a simpler time (84%) where everyone was less materialistic, with most Brits saying the 80s was the best decade to live in. Many people believe their parents’ life was better because: • Didn’t have pressures of social media • People looked out for each other more • Finances were in better shape • Real sense of community spirit • Owned their own home People see the past having: • Greater community spirit • No social media • People knew their neighbours • Stronger morals • Took time to pass the time of day • People were more caring

have to offer to a wider audience. What are you looking forward to about Manchester fashion week? We are looking forward to seeing all the different styles of both designers, their collections and attendee’s. We are hoping to see a mixture of high fashion and streetwear. Similarly, we are looking forward to showcasing our products to fashion influencers through models and bloggers so that our customer base can grow. Do you have a signature collection? Our signature collection has to be our spring collection that we released a few months ago, the largest number of items we’ve released and sold to date. Our best seller has to be our ‘Double Dragon Bag’, we just love the embroidered design of the two dragons.

What is the story behind the Haze name? Our name comes from one of the brands close friends who helped start this whole journey, his surname is “Hayes” so we just built off of that; a nice little play on words. Who is your target customer? Our target audience is definitely teenagers who are looking to break into the streetwear scene, not just shop at high street stores anymore and who want to create their own image; as everyone starts somewhere in this subculture. Our secondary, wider audience is anyone who is into contemporary and urban fashion. What makes the brand different to others? Our brand is heavily inspired from Eastern art and design, Eastern style dragons, Taoism and 16

symbolism from their mythology. whereas most streetwear nowadays (apart from the likes of A Bathing Ape) rely on a more western style vibe. We just wanted to tap into that market and gain inspiration from that for our products. Additionally, we use the highest quality of neoprene in our bags, all our products are vegan friendly. Along with the reinforced zippers, satin and silk interior finish on the bags we think the quality of our bags and at such an affordable price, makes our brand different to everyone else in the market. What do you hope to achieve? We are a new brand right now but in the future we hope to reach out to more people and our plans are for Haze to become internationally known and more importantly, an edgy streetwear brand. With this opportunity it will help us portray our brand identity and what we

How do you expect people to feel when they wear the brand? Like they’re making a statement, to both the people around them and to themselves. But most importantly we want people to feel like themselves, as long as people feel comfortable and confident with our products then that’s all we think matters.

ASTON MERRYGOLD INTERVIEW

What was the highlight of your career so far as you have achieved so much in so many areas? It's hard to choose from but it's still getting to perform with the Jackson brothers at the Michael Jackson tribute concert. Do you miss any part of being JLs? For us jls isn't something you're in and out of, we'll always be in jls. Because we do see each other often there isn't much to miss! You are very busy with charity work, why is it so important to you? Without the help of people I wouldn't

be in this position in life. I'm in an industry that without people dreams don't become reality. So giving back and being thankful is a must! is it true you are forming a new boy band with Louis smith and Harry Judd? What are you looking for in your new boy band? No who told you that? Ha Rip It Up tour Sept!! Congratulations on becoming a dad, how’s it been so far? Thank you. It's the single most amzing thing I've ever done in life. Being a dad is everything.

And now you’re on tour this year, how do you fit it all in? To be honest quite easy. Not only is my fiancee amazing, but we're not hesitant about having him come with on the road and letting him grow up around the touring lifestyle. I would of loved that as a kid. You’re coming to Liverpool in April, you said in your last JLs concert that we are the best crowd, does that still stand? They never disappoint but looking forward to see if this is still the case!

Love Aesthetics' ethos has always been about providing the highest quality clinical, evidence based procedures at a reasonable price. After dedicating the last five years working fully in aesthetics I have found the best way to do this is by having a purpose built clinic at my home to reduce overheads. Due to the ever growing clientele we have now located to a larger home based premises to accommodate our growing needs. We are still based in West Derby and prices remain the same as does flexibility and the highest clinical care.

AS THE BBC CELEBRATES ITS 50TH BIRTHDAY WE SPEAK TO BBC MERSEYSIDE BREAKFAST PRESENTER TONY SNELL Congratulations on being at the BBC for 20 years Thank you! The BBC has a “pipe and slippers” image but it is so much more. It is. What have been the highlights of your career? The capital of culture has to be up there. To see the changes that have been made from Anfield Road right the way into the city centre is incredible, To see people stepping out of Lime Street with their cases coming to Liverpool for the weekend as a tourist is incredible. It is something I never thought I would see and never thought Liverpool would be a tourist destination in my lifetime. Have you any plans to retire? Goodness me no. I am only 53 and I have 3 teenage kids, they aren’t cheap. I love doing what I do as it is something different every day. what I love about the listeners is that they aren’t backwards about coming forward, BBC Merseyside is their radio station and their voice for the people and they use it. It paints a true picture of the region and credit to the people. They can spot a phoney a mile off. It is very refreshing

22

What inspires you about your job? The BBC has a duty to represent the people and they do that very well, it is funded by public money and has lasted 50 years. What is the first thing you do in the morning? I am obsessed by the news so I will check the news and see if anything has happened overnight. What impact do you think social media has had on younger people? It’s massive isn’t it, a few will believe everything they read online and fake news is a worry. I have to remind my kids that their 270 or so followers on snapchat aren’t their real friends. The kids they went to nursery with and spent time in school with are their friends and they are the ones that count. I also feel that kids are wrapped up in cotton wool these days, they don’t go out as much as they are wrapped up on their phones and tablets. It’s more difficult to develop social skills and how are they going to get on in job interviews?

How do you switch off? I play football three times a week, I like to cycle and keep fit. Nothing crazy but I am middle aged and I am trying to keep the flab off. I like to get out and breathe in the fresh air, it is good for my body and mind. Talking of mindfulness, is this something you practice? In a way. I mean people talking about their health is getting a lot better isn’t it. People used to talk about anxiety and depression in hushed tones but it’s much more openly discussed now and I am a big believer in that

Breathtaking, exhilarating and superb are just some of the words that spring to mind when I think of this city. No wonder their tourist offices want to show it off, there’s so much to boast about it’s a lot to take in for one weekend. The small European country is surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany. It’s mostly rural with dense Ardennes forest and nature parks in the north, with rocky gorges of the Mullerthan region in the east and the Moselle river caller in the south east. Its capital, Luxembourg City, where I stayed, if famed for its fortified medieval old town perched on sheer cliffs, and its luxury designer shopping delights for its wealthy inhabitants. Many people commute from surrounding countries such as Switzerland as real estate can be exceptionally expensive. There are no direct flights from Liverpool so it was an early start to the day with a one hour flight from Manchester to Munich and a transfer to Luxembourg, the door to door journey time was around four and a half hours with two flights thrown in. Upon arrival I was whisked to the five star Hotel Sofitel Luxembourg. This exquisite luxury home for the next two days was more than adequate for me, I would have been happy just to lounge around in here for the weekend, but there was a full programme of sightseeing planned, so I 24

freshened up before having lunch in the city centre at the ca(fe)sino at the Casino Luxembourg which offers a free tour guide. From there I met the guide from the Luxembourg City Tourist Office and embarked on a walking guided tour of the city centre and of the old town with highlights: Place Guillaume II, Cathedral, Palais Grand-Ducal, Parliament, Marché-aux-Poissons, the ancient streets and alleyways of the old town featured on UNESCO's World heritage list and a visit of the world's longest underground tunnel system called “Casemates“ There’s so much to see, the scenery is just stunning, the buildings are delightful, mixing enchanted Old Luxembourg in with new modern architecture and museums. We had some free time in the afternoon to explore the shopping district and sample their famous pastries but by the end of the day my feet were aching and I was looking forward to sinking into the bathtub in my gorgeous hotel room. But not before I was treated to French fine dining dinner at Brasserie Guillaume in the city centre On Saturday morning I was greeted with a short coach transfer to the Éislek region (Luxembourg’s Ardennes). With their majestic landscapes that alternate between scenic highlands and winding valleys, the Éislek region offers an exceptional natural experience. Any number of cycling and hiking trails enable enthusiastic visitors to preamble through the forests and picturesque landscapes. One of our destinations was

Vianden (www.vianden-info.lu) an extremely picturesque location on both banks of the Our, set amid magnificent scenery. Its fine feudal manor dating back to the 9th century, seat of the Counts of Vianden and handed down to the dynasty of Orange-Nassau, is a remarkable medieval building, a real architectural jewel unrivalled in the Ardennes and the Eifel and which is mostly restored. An outer wall with guard towers encircles the town. I saw the panoramic elevator to the ‘Pfaffenthal’ area and walk direction new funicular to the Kirchberg area. I visited Vianden Castle www.castle-vianden.lu and the quaint medieval town of Vianden offering more splendid views. We then transferred to Diekirch for lunch in a cafe followed by a stroll through the pedestrian zone with shops, cafés, old streets and small passages and a big open terrace square in the midst of the centre. In the summer this plays host to a jam packed entertainment programs of public concerts and all kinds of entertainment. I then visited Bourscheid castle situated on a steep promontory, perched 150 metres high above the Sûre river before being whisked to Clervaux, situated in a deep and narrow valley beside the river Clerve in the inmidst of the Ardennes. The Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maur, built in 1910 in romanesque- burgundian style, dominates the valley. This 12th century feudal castle houses many exhibitions. I was treated to "Family of Man” which is made up of 503 photographs by 273 artists, from 68 countries,

brought together by Edward Steichen for the New York Museum of Modern Art Having toured the globe, exhibited in over 150 museums worldwide, the final integral version of the exhibition was permanently installed in Clervaux Castle in 1994. Since its creation, having attracted over 10 million visitors, The “Family of Man“ has entered the history of photography as a legendary exhibition. The evening rounded up with a delicious dinner at the Golf and Country House Hotel Clervaux The View restaurant. On Sunday morning after a delicious hotel buffet breakfast we drove to the Mullerthal Region, Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. The region owes its name to its hilly landscape reminiscent of Switzerland. The Mullerthal is above all a unique biotope characterized by rock formations that are as beguiling as they are surprising. www.mullerthal.lu The Mullerthal Trail takes the experienced hiker through 112 km of magnificent valley trails. Fortunately we didn’t have time to do all of the walking but nevertheless has a lovely walk. Tricky rock formations dotted with difficult sounding names - Piteschkummer, Geyerslay or Hohllay, to name only a few - the footpaths will lead you through fields and forests into the heart of a natural setting that is almost intact and amidst plethora of breathtaking panoramas. I visited the small village called Mullerthal which houses the Touristcenter “Heringer Millen“ In this restored 17th century mill you can visit a mill museum, an old mill wheel still turning, the “Best of Wandern test centre“ for hiking clothes and an ancient stone oven where traditional mill

bread is baked in-house and sold to the locals and tourists The next stop was the town of Berdorf which is urrounded by rocks and lies on a plateau and is the starting point of many hiking routes. From there, the Mullerthal Trail first runs through the locality and then into its rocky landscape that impresses by massive cliffs, gorges and caves. After lunch there was time to join a guided tour of Echternach known for its annual dancing procession through town (listed on UNESCO's Immaterial World Heritage list) - is Luxembourg's oldest town and is also the gateway to the Mullerthal region. Ancient patrician houses, narrow lanes and remains of the former city wall, So much was packed into one weekend, and there really is something for everyone of all ages. Fresh air, mountains,

valleys, beautiful landscapes, delicious food and chocolates. It’s enchanting, interesting and offers so much more than more popular city break destinations. It’s worth a visit and we thank the Luxembourg Tourist Office and their fellow countrymen for their wonderful hospitality. We can’t wait to return and neither should you. www.visitluxembourg.com

RADIO & TV PRESENTER, SASSY MUM & SOCIALITE CLAIRE SIMMO W ell the Easter bunny has

hopped off .. along with Easter panto at the Epstein – which was just one of the most fabulous experiences I have ever had in a theatre. It was such a small cast – and to work with 5 amazingly talented people like Ray Quinn, Michael Chapman, Lindzi Germain, Lewis Pryor and Mia Molloy was a total joy! Lee Kelly struck gold when casting this, and I really hope we can all work together again in the future. Obviously the wrap party which started in The Clubhouse and finished in Superstar Boudoir was also a night to remember! I was also delighted to be asked for the 3rd year running to host Mencap Liverpool Idol at The Shankly Hotel. This again is a local charity that relies on their events to raise revenue and help so many people with Mental Health issues … Kev & Sarah put so much into this – and it was worth every second of organisation! With judges including Steve McFarlane from Parr Street Studios and Rosalie Galvin who recently appeared on BBC Altogether now – they were blown away by the talent and had a more difficult job choosing

26

the Judges choice winner than I did compering it! One of my very close friends is Miguel from MD Productions, and over the last year I have followed closely (to almost the point of stalking!) his new band he has put together … Girl Talk ! I have watched these youngsters become more and more confident performers – and under the guidance of Miguel and Zoe I have seen very few acts command a stage like Girl Talk did when I hosted the official launch of their single “Neighbourhood” at the Epstein theatre! These girls can sing and dance and what’s even more important is that they aren’t afraid of hard work to achieve success. I have seen them over the past year performing 3 or 4 different venues a day and have never once complained. I truly believe these girls will become a household name and Miguel will steer them towards the success they deserve. It has also seen the month of Cash for Kids & Fazakerley 9 “Box on the Docks” which being an Ambassador for Fazakerley 9 – I hosted this event for the 4th year running, and once again – it was a huge success with a fabulous performance from Mic Lowry (fresh back from touring with Justin Bieber) and Rossie from Radio City 2 breakfast supposedly fighting for the last time … he’s promised his wife Emma he’s hanging up his gloves for good – having had 5 years undefeated so going out on a high! Also managed to raise over £51000 on the night for both the charities which is a fantastic result! All eyes across the world were on Aintree for the Grand National weekend, and although I never got to go to the Races – we were working with Merseyrail greeting passengers as they headed to and from the course all 3 days – and the sun finally came out on Saturday! There was such an amazing atmosphere – and we showed everyone once again why our City leads the fashion stakes as well ! Finally, I was in my Disney element when the Worlds of Enchantment Disney on Ice came to the Echo Arena. I

was warned not to dress as Elsa by my 12 years old daughter Melodie – but I managed to get away with a Mickey Mouse t shirt! It was so lovely to see her and friend Chloe actually be able to behave like children again – in a world full of snapchat and filters and how many likes you can get on Instagram to see the delight on their faces was priceless.. although apparently my over exaggerated waving and excitement at Olaf was a step too far!

SASS AND SELF HELP GURU GENIENE AZALEA LEFT BEHIND THE CUT THROAT WORLD OF PR AND MARKETING TO EMBRACE A MORE MINDFUL AND FULFILLING LIFESTYLE. JOIN HER ON HER JOURNEY.. From corporate to conscious, musings of a reluctant . lightworker. Well here I am back again, with a brand new conscious column for Lifestyle Monthly magazine, a far cry from the days of yesteryear when my write ups would have been more boozy than Buddha, 28

but times change and so have I. I’m far more pranayama than . party these days.

‘spiritual scenester’ there are a few things you might have started to fall into the trap of…

We seem to be in a spiritual revolution, have you noticed? Spirituality is almost fashionable now, compared to even 5 years ago. But i’m here to tell you that it can’t be ‘love n light and ‘good vibes only’ all the time, despite what the latest ‘how to be happy’ or spiritual books like The Secret are telling you.

Adopting a new hobby just because it’s the latest spiritual fad.

The term for being positive all the time without doing any of the introspective work is ‘spiritual bypassing’ This term was coined in the 1980’s to describe the use of spiritual practices to avoid dealing with any past unresolved traumas and wounds. This might sound favourable, but in actual fact we are withdrawing from aspects of ourselves that need to be integrated. We might think that it is helpful to ‘rise above it’ or hide our anxiety, shame, fear and loneliness from others but all we are really doing is burying our pain for another day. “Emotions are neither positive, nor negative, they are just tools for learning”

2. Judging people when they are expressing emotions. 3. Using positivity to avoid all problems. 4. Use spirituality to justify excessive drug use 5. Putting yourself in bad situations due to excessive tolerance 6. Miss out on material success with a belief that money is evil Of course we have all displayed these behaviours once upon a time, You’re only human, it’s ok, but there is no need to deflect responsibility any more. Self awareness is key, learn about your own unconscious behaviours and become more mindful of them. The things you see in others are a good way to do this. Take a course on the shadow self, you will be amazed and what you uncover!

These kind of behaviours only Until next month, serve to strengthen the manipulative ego. Hiding behind a In lakech and all my lovin’ spiritual veil and bypassing one’s own fundamental emotional Geniene Azalea needs is never going to end well. That said, if you are genuinely just happy then go ahead and feel that too! There is no need to be trapped in a world of pain. There is always a time for feeling it and letting go. Feel it, to heal it… The trick is not to judge, just notice, in order to increase your own self awareness. Essentially, an understanding of oneself is what the aim is here. THE SALT CAVE LIVERPOOL Is a complimentary therapy centre on Duke St, which delivers an increasingly popular 100% natural and non invasive complimentary therapy for chronic respiratory ailments including Asthma, COPD, Bronchitis, Sinusitis, HayFever, Cystic Fibrosis as well as skin conditions like Eczema or Psoriasis. It is available for babies right up to the elderly. Launching just over a year ago, The Salt Cave has already signed up 4000 people to the benefits of their therapies What is salt Therapy? It originated in Poland back in the 1840’s, where salt miners were noted by medics to have notably peak respiratory health and to be immune to a number of common respiratory illnesses. Since its launch in November 2016, The Salt Cave Liverpool has become increasingly popular as a highly effective, 100% natural and non invasive complimentary therapy for chronic respiratory ailments including Asthma, COPD, Bronchitis, Sinusitis, HayFever, Cystic Fibrosis as well as skin conditions like Eczema or Psoriasis. As owner Zoltan explains, Salt Therapy is a powerful, natural treatment delivered through a controlled air medium that simulates the natural healing environment of a salt cave microclimate. During a 60 mins session visitors relax in a treatment room, where the healing micro-climate is reproduced by an advanced proprietary Salt Cave technology called ‘Breeze Tronic Pro’ that manages and maintains optimal atmospheric conditions throughout the session. The respiratory system is exposed to a specially formulated highly purified form of pharmaceutical grade salt, which works as a natural antibacterial, anti-histamine and antiinflammatory agent on the lungs, bronchial passage and even the skin. The salt also has powerful mucolytic effects which loosens and releases excessive mucus build up. It also removes pathogenic agents (such as airborne pollen) and relaxes the

immune system, reducing IgE anti body levels. As customers inhale the dry, saltenriched air deep down into the lungs, mucus begins to clear quickly, and inflammation is reduced, creating more room in the airways for you to breathe. The impact is immediate symptoms quickly subside and sometimes the effects last for up to 12 months. This is no health fad – from the ancient Greeks to modern-day doctors, medical experts have championed its amazing effects. With frequent visits to The Salt Cave in Liverpool, you can expect to see incredible results for both health and wellbeing. What are the benefits of salt Therapy? Salt is both anti-bacterial and antiinflammatory and when inhaled helps to loosen excess mucus build up, which can, if left untreated, lead to more serious conditions such as chest infection, cold and flu. Salt therapy is said to help boost the immune system and reduce your chances of becoming ill. In a number of clinical studies, it has been proven to help treat and minimise both chronic respiratory and skin conditions. What Effects should I Expect? After visiting the Salt Cave in Liverpool, you can expect to notice

the following effects, but the more you go, the better you will benefit: • Instant and on-going relief for smokers and sufferers from chronic respiratory and bronchial conditions • You will find it much easier to breath and far more deeply too enabling vastly improved sleep • You won’t feel out of breath quite as often as usual • You will be able to cough up excess mucus if you have been suffering from this and unable to shift it • You won’t feel the need to use inhalers as often for respiratory conditions • Your immune system will be boosted so you won’t catch a cold or flu as easily as before • If you have skin conditions, you will see vast improvement in just a few sessions

The Salt Cave in Liverpool is now offering a brand new £125 unlimited monthly membership with the first session being free, For more information call 0151 329 3909

DARREN VISION Optimist or Pessimist

Recently I was asked if I was an

Optimist or a Pessimist ... it was a serious question although it was framed in that well known form ... “are you a half pint full or a half pint empty sort of person?” I have some difficulty with both optimists and pessimists ... you can’t really be one or the other all the time ... right now, as I write, I am optimistic about Liverpool versus Man City in the Champions League ... but ask me again by the time this is published and that may no longer be the case. To be an eternal optimist

involves some degree of hope ... and whilst it is often admirable to have hope it is just a random feeling if it doesn’t have logic to support it. I think hoping for something without the facts to tell you whether it is possible tends to make you naive. So that makes me a Pessimist? Well, not really. I see the pessimistic state as one that thinks fate has dealt you a hand and there’s pretty much nothing you can do about it. It accepts and expects a negative outcome. By the way my friend wasn’t having any of this ... especially when I said “it’s half a pint, neither full nor empty”. I was rejecting the choice of labels on offer. You see optimism and pessimism are feelings and I prefer to describe myself as a pragmatist, because a pragmatist uses the data available to assess the art of the possible. I was thinking of describing myself as

a possible-ist but this would have been too much for him to accept. The pragmatist is still a positive thinker and a positive doer ... it’s just that everything is informed by the art of the possible ... there is an in-built reality check to a pragmatist ... they respect that some things are unattainable ... but they push hard for the things that can be achieved. So don’t accept labels that others want to give you, choose your own. But more important than the label is the way you approach things ... in my experience a positive approach usually succeeds more than a negative one. running high and don’t let them get the better of me. Usually on fight night I am chilled. But anyone who says they aren’t scared to flight is lying because it is a scary thing to do. How does your mum take it when you fight? She comes to watch but she doesn’t watch, if you know what I mean. Has being a sportsman changed outlook on life? I a more disciplined and I have a lot of respect for people if they respect me You are supporting the Let’s be Blunt campaign to stop people carrying knives? Yes, I have done a video to support it, I have been stabbed myself. i don’t understand the mentality of someone getting ready on a night out and for example putting a knife down their jeans, Are they doing that with the intent of going out and picking a fight and stabbing someone. To end their life or cripple them for life. I just cant get my head round that, they must be sick in the head to do that. I am fully support this campaign and I say to everyone carrying a knife: Don’t ruin your life.

DARREN TILL INTERVIEW Merseyside’s mixed martial artist and former kick boxer Darren Till is preparing for his big fight this month and chats exclusively to Lifestyle

we’ll do. Friday it depends on the coach whether I have a hard day or an easy day. Saturday is a relaxing run and Sunday is a day of recovery.

Darren, nicknamed “The Gorilla” is currently training six days a week in preparation

How did you get into it? I remember I saw a few guys fighting on the telly when I was 17 years old and I loved it, I just got hooked on how it was different type of martial arts and I need to get into this. So I came down to the gym and asked to train and that was seven years ago

What’s your training regime? Monday morning I do a mixture of grappling for two and a half hours, Monday night is an hour on the pads and thai boxing, or my coach might make me do a 50 min run of the treadmill to get my heart rate.Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I will do 10-15 hours of sparring because that’s leading up to my fight on the night. that’s what 42

Are you excited for your fight? I always get nervous and scared. I get scared of getting hurt or getting knocked out but I try to control my nerves as I have a lot of emotions

What have you got planned after the fight? I am going to go abroad, as its so hard in the lead up to the fight it’s so intense so afterwards I don’t want anyone bothering me so I will turn the phone off and go and lie on a beach or anywhere for a month and I can have beer and eat what I want. That’s the best way to wind down and just chill. MMA is big in Liverpool isn’t it, is it a growing trend? it’s always been there. 90% of people in Liverpool know about it and right night Liverpool is the hot spot in the whole of England because of the talent and the quality in the gyms and and people locally have influenced them to go to the gyms and train to be the next big champion.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT ®: THOMPSON VS. TILL takes place at the Echo Arena Liverpool on Sunday, May 27

I f you were to dissect

today’s alternative rock music, you’ll find much of it pays homage to The Psychedelic Furs. Led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs scored major hits with “Love My Way”, “Pretty In Pink”, “Heaven”, “The Ghost In You”, and “Heartbreak Beat” in all releasing seven studio albums, spawning several compilations, a boxset and a live concert DVD. Born out of the post-punk UK rock scene, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on US 44

college radio scoring a multitude of number 1 singles. With the advent of MTV in the early 80s the band took off into the stratosphere and when John Hughes approached the band with his film built around the Furs song “Pretty In Pink”, the band’s legacy was cemented. After a brief hiatus in the 90s and a side project called “Love Spit Love”, the band regrouped at the dawn of the new millennium. The Psychedelic Furs touring lineup remains Richard Butler (vocals), Tim Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar), Mars Williams (saxophone),

Amanda Kramer (keyboards) and Paul Garisto (drums). In 2018 the band is working on their first new studio album since 1991. Later in the year the band plans to re-release their entire catalog on vinyl.

DJ GREG WILSON INTERVIEW

46

DJ, remixer and edit exponent Greg Wilson is back with the third instalment of his hugely popular ‘Credit To The Edit’ series. Almost a decade on from Volume 2, ‘Credit To The Edit – Vol. 3’, draws on music from the Disco and Rave eras, adding a seminal Hip Hop cut, a Balearic favourite, as well a few contemporary tracks from the last 10 years. A groundbreaking DJ, Greg played a key role in introducing black electronic dance music to the UK via his early ‘80s residencies at Wigan Pier, Manchester’s ‘Legend’ and ‘The Haçienda’, as well as over the airwaves on the city’s Piccadilly Radio. Working with Technics turntables, a Revox reel to reel tape machine and a razor blade, Greg carved out his reputation as a UK pioneer and champion of Electro-Funk. Whereas, more recently, following his 2003 comeback after a 2-decade hiatus, he’s gained international renown at the vanguard of a now global re-edits movement. With re-edits culture continuing to grow ever-stronger and becoming a staple of the contemporary dance scene, it brings back into play a whole era of music for a new generation. “To have played a part in this recent evolution fulfils my personal criteria as a DJ, which is to draw from the past whilst informing the present. I was always cautious of nostalgia traps, where DJs fall into playing the old music in the old way, whereas this was about bringing new context to what was always great music, introducing it to a younger crowd, with the re-edits movement providing the perfect

connection from then to now – my role as a ‘bridge-builder’ crystalizing as a consequence.” How has music evolved since you started DJ? With regards to dance music, when I started out in 1975 the 12” single had yet to arrive, so, beginning with that, tracks became increasingly DJ friendly, the advent of drum machines locking them in precise time to make them easier to mix (mixing itself didn’t properly take off in the UK until the mid-‘80s – prior to that only a small amount of DJs here had taken this direction). The bass, or bottom end, of dance releases has become more important over the years, the influence of Jamaica’s dub reggae approach of the ‘70s first becoming prominent during the early-‘80s, as the bass moved further to the fore. Other electronic instrumentation, like sequencers and samplers would also help revolutionise they way dance music was made. ·What keeps you drawn into the music scene? Its always been central to my life, since before I was a DJ, so I suppose its second nature. I’ve had my ups and downs over the decades, but that’s the territory, especially if you have a principled approach to what you’re prepared to do. I regard it more as vocational than a job as such, although, like anything else, there’s a work aspect (which, for me, is more about the travelling than actually DJing itself). Same with running a record label, which can be more of an expensive hobby than business opportunity. Is there a story behind the new album? The first 2 volumes were in 2005 and 2009, and I’d thought we’d left it too long for a third volume, so when Tirk approached me it

came as something as a surprise. Putting together a strong tracklisting wasn’t that difficult as I had 9 years of material I’d worked on to draw from, the gap between this and the last album working in my favour. What inspires you as a DJ? When I started out I was all about building myself a reputation for featuring the latest releases. This reached its zenith when I was at Legend in Manchester and Wigan Pier in the early-‘80s playing to a majority black audience, the music featured being largely imported from New York, which was a hotbed for innovative dance music during this period. In more recent times my role has become that of a ‘bridgebuilder’, connecting the past to the present. The fact that the reedits movement has enabled so many great older tracks to be played in a contemporary context, has underpinned this. I’m not interested in nostalgia, but more about introducing classic and cult-classic recordings to a new younger audience, yet to experience these aural delights in a club/festival setting.

Greg Wilson’s ‘Credit to the Edit’ Vol 3 is out now via Tirk Recordings. Greg will also be DJing at the official ‘Credit To The Edit’ after party at this year’s Sound City Festival 6th May.

As knife crime is on the increase a group of Liverpool campaigners aim to slash the number of casualties...

What is your name and why did you set up the charity The name of the charity is called Lets Be Blunt. We are a digital marketing company called Baltic Digital who have partnered up with MTK Global and Liverpool campaign ‘No More Knives’ to start an educational programme for alternative schools, after learning that knife crime in Merseyside has risen for the first time in seven years. This campaign was set up in loving memory of Sam Cook who lost his life as a result of knife crime, because of this 48

we are working closely with family members and friends of Sam.

the ones who had their own knife taken and used against them.

How have you coped with the death of your best friend? Words don't explain. (Can’t go into it too much over email)

Tell us about the projects you are running to educate people We are working closely with MTK Global which is a worldwide boxing company. The programmes will include: There perception around knife crime and a discussion from ex-prisoners relating to personal experiences as a criminal in a real and honest way and using these experiences to challenge and change perceptions of prison life and that of a criminal. Self Defence Lessons, Practical Sessions which will include either depending on the group Boxing, MMA, Football or ICT. We will also be doing first aid awareness lessons.

What do you want to achieve from it Our campaign aims to warn about the dangers of young people carrying knives following the recent spate of incidents in the area, which has been steadily increasing over the years. Why do you think we have such problem with knife crime? I’m not sure, I think a lot of it is gang related. Most kids these days want to be apart of a gang so they feel safe or because their mates are in one. Then once they are in a gang there's always rival gangs, it goes on from there and most of the time the only way they feel safe is if they're carrying a knife. Even though most knife victims are

Who else is involved in helping with the charity We have numerous supporters following us, FACE (friends against cancer events), Exit Music, The Ben Kinsella Trust, Baltic Digital, Peaceful Planet Charity, Dispute Resolution

Consultancy Group, MTK Global, Advanced Business Machines LTD, ScanGuardian LTD, Esteem Education. what projects have you got in the pipeline The Programme sessions are going to be starting from June which will run for 6 Weeks and this will be a pilot programme for the first session. We are also going to be doing a music event in June in the name of Lets Be Blunt, this will be based on knife crime and bring everybody together. When we get the support and the followers behind us as a campaign we are also looking on doing a petition to get ID scanners and metal detectors in all bars/arenas/events in Liverpool. We are about to launch a celebrity video campaign in the next few weeks too, which hopefully will gain us the right kind of awareness. How do you want to raise awareness of Lets be blunt/no more knives We want them to realise there is more to life than getting into gangs and carrying or using knives, the beauty of our campaign is that we have endless connections with celebrities in MMA and boxing, who these kids look up to. A way we want to raise awareness that there is more to life is by showing them a more positive way their life could go instead, by taking them to MTK shows and introducing them to these people who are successful.

Our main focus for the campaign is to try and wake these kids up before its too late, we think that can be done if they are given the right opportunity. What is your message to people carrying knives Don’t ruin your life. What is the big plan for the charity Our goal is to have MTK free school's across the country that focus on tailoring everyone's individual skills to give them the greatest opportunities in life. This includes MMA, boxing, ICT and others... We are fortunate enough to have the right connections to provide kids

we work with opportunities they wouldn't receive from mainstream school, so ultimately our big plan is to help as many kids as we can and hopefully make a change for the next generation. How can people get involved People can support us on our social media accounts, Letsbebluntuk and our webpage www.letsbebluntliverpool.org. The more awareness we get the better. Were also going to be selling tickets to our first event which is in June in the next few weeks, its going to be a good night and all money raised will go into the programme.

Lifestyle

One of the most iconic women in history graces our front www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk cover this month and I couldn’t be prouder, Oprah is editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk probably the most inspirational woman alive on our planet @amandalifestyle who touches everyone’s hearts. she symbolises triumph over adversity and is genuinely a nice person, says everyone who meets her. she remains humble and yet is still allowed to celebrate her success, and why not, she works hard. It is an ethos that Lifestyle supports and having been publishing our award winning magazine for ten years, we share her sentiments. As the owner of the magazine and various supporting businesses I am not on the same dizzy financial scale as Oprah but, universe, if you’re listening, I am open to receiving. Ironically though as you get older it is funny how stuff becomes less important to you as well as people . And when I say people I mean real friends and family, not the 3000 friends on Facebook or your twitter/instagram followers you don’t need to impress. No one really cares do they? My life has become so much simpler as I get older, I am not bothered to go shopping and buy clothes and accessories anymore. I no longer feel the need to fill my home with random useless things. so I stopped having children… kidding. seriously, they are my greatest blessing, my greatest achievement. As summer looms I am once again getting excited about the things that we should never take for granted; waking up in the morning and being able to walk, to feel, to hear, to taste and touch. After my retreat in Cyprus last month I am far more conscious of myself and my surroundings. I am grateful for everything I can experience. Hearing a light breeze rustle the blossom on the trees. These things matter to me more than a new top I will discard to the back of my wardrobe after two wears. Being mindful is not a fad, it’s a way of life and a life that I embrace. since discovering this I have been far more in tune with my business, my colleagues, my family and friends. Which is way I am way too excited for The Positive Awards later in the year, it’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate loving life and everything in ityour business, your community, your passion. You. Talking of awards, the beautiful and the bold, the groomed and the glamorous head to the Liverpool Fashion & Beauty Awards in June and finalists are busy preparing themselves.
