Real change is possible, if we work together. Each one of us - with women, men and non-binary people joining forces - can be a leader within our own spheres of influence by taking bold pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity. Through purposeful collaboration, we can help women advance and unleash the limitless potential offered to economies the world over. Real change is possible, every International Women’s Day brings more action, more awareness ground breaking action is taking place that truly drives the greatest change for women. Last year, organizations and individuals around the world supported the #PledgeForParity campaign and committed to help women and girls achieve their ambitions; challenge conscious and unconscious bias; call for gender-balanced leadership; value

women and men’s contributions equally; and create inclusive flexible cultures. From awareness raising to concrete action, organizations rallied their people to pledge support to help forge gender parity on International Women’s Day (IWD) and beyond. But there is still a long road to go. The World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won’t close entirely until 2186. This is too long to wait. Around the world, IWD can be an important catalyst and vehicle for driving greater change for women and moving closer to gender parity.

We have urgent work to do. Are you ready to #BeBoldForChange this IWD 2017 and beyond?

JESS GLYNN Pop sensation Jess Glynne is back for an evening at the races this summer, to perform at The Jockey Club Live 16th June. It’s her second year in a row, so what’s bringing her back to the race course again? The crowds or her love of horses?

You’re back for the second year running playing at The Jockey Club Live events around the country, what has brought you back? I had a lot of fun last year firstly. Secondly, the support from The Jockey Club Live for charities was really special and loving horses as much as I do and the shows we did I couldn’t say no. Your Autumn arena tour was a huge success, do the crowds at these differ from those at the racecourse? Every crowd has a different energy but they don’t differ too much! The atmosphere at both types of shows was overwhelmingly amazing. You managed to go into the crowds at some events last year to watch the racing, did you place a cheeky bet and win? Yes I did, I sneaked out in into the crowd and put a bet on and came up with a winner but it wasn’t down to my knowing the form though. Just luck! As they are large scale outdoor summer events, do you approach them differently from the indoor shows? Our approach is the same for both indoor and outdoor events - the band and I love playing live and the crowds don’t differ too much in size so it’s great!

Aintree is a perfect example of this, but is it good to play in parts of the country that are not on the normal touring circuits that you would do? Yeah, of course. it’s always good to see people that I wouldn’t normally reach. The Jockey Club Live shows are a great day out for friends and family, watch an early evening of racing and then party the rest of the night away to acts like yourself. Will you be bringing your friends and family along to the shows? Maybe but I doubt it as the shows are dotted all about the country. That’s ok though cause me and the band always have a lot of fun. What have you got planned for the remainder of 2017? 2017 is going to be an exciting year.. You’ll have to wait and see! Tickets are onsale now and available via http:// www.thejockeyclublive.co.uk

Randox Health Grand National Festival, 6-8 April This year the Randox Health Grand National not only has a new sponsor and broadcaster, but also a new tradition. Randox Health have announced that for every year of their partnership a new trophy will be designed so that every winner has a unique piece of art, reflecting the rarity of the accomplishment. The winning team will all be included in the prize-giving for the first time. With jockey, trainer and groom receiving a silver representation of the trophy “The Randox Health Grand National is unlike any other race in the world,” says Randox founder and CEO Dr Peter FitzGerald. “It occupies a special place in the hearts of millions of people and we are committed to ensuring that it continues to do so. “To win the Grand National is one of the crowning achievements in sport and in this our first year of sponsorship, we sought to commission a trophy which would complement this tremendous success. I am delighted with the result, as the trophy captures the heart of both the race and Randox – in the speed of the horses and the strands of DNA. I look forward to the moment this trophy is presented to the winner of the 2017 Randox Health Grand National and wish everyone taking part the very best. “There is a reverence held for the winning horse,

jockey, trainer and owner that surpasses any other race. Whoever wins the 2017 Randox Health Grand National will join a cast of legends, among them Red Rum who, 40 years ago, became the first and only horse to achieve a record third victory over these famous jumps, and last year’s winner Rule The World who became the first novice to win since 1958 – an incredible victory for Mouse Morris. “As this is rightly seen as the ultimate test of man and horse, we are introducing a new element to the race - a unique and striking trophy for every year of the Randox Health Grand National. The

unparalleled thrill of winning will be complemented by the exclusivity of the prize. And, for the first time, the trainer, jockey and stable hand will each receive a miniature of the trophy as we recognise the teamwork that goes into achieving such monumental success.” To buy tickets for the Randox Grand National visit www.aintree.thejockeyclub.co.uk

Randox Health Grand National Festival, 6-8 April

Kickstarting their first year of sponsorship of the world’s greatest race, Randox Health has partnered with Liverpool John Moores University for an educational and interactive health event at the start of the week of the Randox Health Grand National festival. Broken into three days, the first and final (3rd and 5th April) will focus on human and sporting health, while the second day (4th April) will revolve around equine health, in partnership with Leahurst Veterinary School. A programme of activity for school pupils from the greater Merseyside and Cheshire areas has been created by LJMU School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, based around sport, health, exercise and performance. Hands-on sessions will enable students to experience the realities of riding a race-horse, boxing and taekwondo. The workshops are intended to raise the students’ understanding of the appropriate training protocols and techniques associated to different sports and the aligned health benefits. Randox is committed to transforming global healthcare through earlier and more accurate

diagnosis to enable preventive action. “Prevention is always better than cure”, says founder and CEO Dr Peter FitzGerald, “and our aim is to empower people to take control of their health, to live longer and more healthy lives. “Our innovation, which is centred on human healthcare, has proven to be highly adaptable and enabled us to also bring leading capabilities to the veterinary, toxicology and food safety disciplines. “The Randox Health Week, with our partners Liverpool John Moore University and Leahurst Veterinary School, is an important step in sharing that message, and I am delighted that we are able to invite pupils and stakeholders to take part in this.”

Taking a fresh look aT The food in When was the last time you visited the food court in St Johns Shopping Centre? If you haven’t been in the last few months, trust us, you are missing out on some of the best fast food in the city, as new arrivals including artisan pizza specialists Dough-O-Cracy, award winning chippy The Good Catch, and hot dog joint Fork It have arrived with a bang.

the Nutella Bomb - a 10” pizza dough filled with marshmallows and Nutella, folded like a calzone and topped with icing sugar and MORE Nutella. Unsurprisingly, people with a sweet tooth go crazy for that one!’ And finally, if Fork It isn’t on your radar, pay attention. Founded in October 2016, Fork It has quickly found its place as the premiere hot dog joint in the city.

We’ve taken a look at exactly what the centre has to offer, and we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Erika Bacs, Manager at Fork It, explains; ‘Fork It was created to bring the classic American hot dog experience to the next level. So if you’re a passionate hot dog lover, you are in the right place. We make eating fun again!

First up are the familiar fast food options: McDonalds, KFC and Subway serving up the classic meals we all know we love and need from time to time; everything from Big Macs to Bargain Buckets, and salads to sub rolls. If you’re after something a little different, ChopStix Noodle Bar’s unique, authentic Far Eastern cuisine comes highly recommended – you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Good Catch’s menu includes their award-winning fish and chips, as well as a selection of puff pastries and a selection of Holland Pies. It’s a family-run operation, with a sixty year legacy in fish and chips. The old adage, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ is true to form here – the original batter recipe has gone untouched since day one, and sells alongside gluten-free and beer-battered options. Foodies and environmentalists will also be pleased to hear that only MSC certified fish, line caught from sustainable fishing grounds, is sold at The Good Catch, and local potato merchants supply the spuds. Both Dunkin’ Donuts and Millie’s Cookies will satisfy the sugary cravings of those with a sweet tooth with their mix of desserts and personalised cookies. Dough-O-Cracy landed in St Johns fresh from the USA last year, and customers immediately fell for its blend of fresh ingredients and bespoke pizza creations. Joseph Wringley, Store Manager at Dough-O-Cracy, says: ‘I think part of the reason customers keep coming back to us is that our pizzas are handmade, fresh, right in front of them. You can choose from a variety of our signature pizzas or you can build your own with any combination of our fresh ingredients. ‘We’ve got a great range of beers, ales or wines to go with the freshly made pizzas, and our dessert option includes

by Amanda Moss Pizza Express is already a winning formula, you know exactly what you are getting from the menu before you walk through the door. But entering the new establishment in Formby it was a breath of fresh (sea) air. The blue and tan decor celebrates the coastal region with a reminder of the first lifeboat station in the UK which launched here in the 1970s. I chose their macaroni cheese special to start with while Simon had the antipasti. Our toddler had the popular dough balls from the kids menu. For mains I chose the Pollo and Astra pizza from their new menu on a light crispy base. It was enormous and I couldnt eat it all but it was very tasty. Simon had his trusted favourite Fiorentna. I was very impressed with the menu choice, vegetarian and gluten free options. They really do cater for everyone. The staff are exceptionally friendly, the

I have no doubt that this will be a huge success and it hasn’t put me off returning again .

5 ways to trick yourself into eating less It’s almost time to ditch our winter wardrobe with its ever so forgiving woolly jumpers and big oversized coats, and swap them for t-shirts, cute cardies and summer dresses. If this time of year puts the cold fear of dread within you, you are not alone. March is when many of us rethink the gym thing, buy Davina’s latest work out DVD and consider not putting the extra shovel of sugar to top the cereal in the mornings. But let’s take things nice and slow, let us not shock our systems too much, and start with a few easy tips to eating less. Instagram your meal Yes, the constant stream of people taking pics of what they are having for tea can be arduous, but for the next few months why not join the masses and taking a snap of your meal? If you have a plate of beige - chips on top of chips with a side portion of chips, you may not want to share it – so promising yourself you are going to open up your nightly meal to the scrutiny of Instagram will force eating a smaller healthier meal instead - #smashedthesalad Opt out of emotional eating Put the ice-cream down – several pints of Hagen Dazs never helped anyone. If you’re feeling

a bit low, are you more inclined to add extra cheese and have a few extra biscuits? When you do get a craving, stop and think, are you really hungry or want to eat because you are feeling certain emotions? Recognising the difference is half the battle and if you are eating because you are lonely or angry then think of other ways to change that feeling rather than food. Maybe throw darts at a photo of your anger instead – this will also help with the bingo wings – winner.

over indulging in and can make it easier to control your portion size. Leave the ‘clear your plate’ club Try not to get sucked into the pressure of eating every scrap of food on your plate. Try and pay attention to how your stomach is feeling and eat slowly, rather than eating everything that’s in front of you. It’s important that you eat to feel satisfied, as opposed to stuffing yourself.

Drink plenty of water Now this one may just do the trick. Apparently most of us don’t drink enough water – no wine does not count. When we don’t drink enough water our bodies hold onto the water we already have thus adding pounds and inches to our waist line. Try a few extra pints of water for 10 days, then hop on the scales, you may see a really big difference. Plus loading up on water tricks your body into thinking its full so you eat less anyway. Keep a food diary 30% of our daily food intake we forget – the extra cookie from the tin before you shut it, the finishing off the kids unwanted cold fish fingers, the picking at the fridge door when you are looking for something else. We all do it, but it could be adding countless calories per day to our diet. But if you keep a food diary it makes you accountable for everything that you eat – and you will realise that those few extras that you have forgotten about all add. This can help you monitor what food groups you may be

British Pie Week A whole week dedicated to eating pies. What’s not to love? Is it the buttery pastry or the oozing filling that makes the pie such a great dish, or is it the big dollop of ketchup on top, that makes pies the perfect comfort food? Pies have been a huge favourite in Liverpool and the UK for centuries, so much so that a whole week (6-12 March 2017) has been dedicated to them. With new research revealing that 75% of people enjoy a pie at least once a month, British Pie Week has been growing every year, since its inception in 2007, with pie-eaters everywhere seeking their ultimate pie perfection. Sometimes, on a cold night all you want to do

6-12 March 2017

is curl up on the sofa and tuck into a nice tasty pie. Meat and potato, steak and kidney, cheese and onion, chicken and leek, goats cheese and butternut squash, spicy chorizo and lentil there’s a pie for everyone, and for every taste bud there is a flavoursome filling lovingly encased in crumbly, buttery, pastry, goodness. You can cook them at home, order them while dining out, or scarf them straight from their foil wrapping on a Saturday afternoon at the football. The choice is yours how you celebrate this ever so British dish. Wonder if they have a scouse pie? Now that would be perfect.

Last Sunday we decided to change our home cooked Sunday Roast ritual for a nice family day out and booked in for a pre cinema meal at a restaurant I have only heard great things about There is nothing like a good meat feast and Red`s true Barbecue was our choice The smell from the grill at the back of the restaurant will hit you as soon as you enter! If you love meat, this is definitely one place you should try out.. Absolutely delicious; an indulgent menu that’s worth every calorie! A nice selection of food on the menu and I can honestly say my clan are not often beaten by a meal ,but boy did this place beat us. The odour of proper BBQ food is amazing, the restaurant is as

staff to provide a drink as they are very attentive and so very friendly.

warm as welcoming, we got seated at a booth straight away the decor is like being in an industrial 80s roadhouse. We decided to all try and share the meal known as the barbecue Feast: Mountains of St. Louis ribs, baby back ribs, rib tips, burnt ends, Black Angus brisket, sticky chicken, smoked sausage and Red’s pulled pork. Served with sweet potato cornbread, buttermilk slaw, giant onion rings, chopped salad, skin-on fries and a slug of bourbon each.

Our food was actually brought out pretty quickly and it didn’t disappoint us,the kids wanting to take many pictures to brag to friends on social media, the responses had so many people in awe at what we were having for dinner, its a mammoth feast. I know a few friends have already planned to go and try and lots of people remarked that they have already been and found the food to be lovely Service 10/10 -Food 10/10 Full well fed and happy family 10/10

With so much on offer in Liverpool to treat your Mum too it’s difficult to choose where to take her, from top restaurants to afternoon tea, to a trip across the Mersey or a theatre treat. There are top 10 gift ideas floating around everywhere too, from scouse mum mugs, to top Liverpool mum tea towels, even chocolate tea pots. But the most popular gift to give on Mother’s Day is still flowers. But which blooms to give? Creating a stunning bunch of flowers created with not only your mum’s favourite flowers but also choosing flowers by their meaning, shows mum you really put some thought into this year’s bunch and you didn’t just stop off and panic buy at the petrol station on the way to pick her up.

Roses. Yes the red ones are given mostly by men to their partners. But roses come in all different colours; white is associated

with humility and innocence. Yellow roses are a great symbol of friendship and pink is traditionally symbolic of admiration appreciation and thanks. Carnations Perhaps the most traditional Mother’s Day flower is the carnation. Pink carnations represent gratitude and love while red carnations signify admiration. White carnations are traditional flowers to give or wear in remembrance of a mother who is no longer living.

Tulips Traditionally seen as the floral herald of spring and new life, tulips are mostly given to new mums. And, as spring-blooming flowers, tulips are of course perfectly suited to the Mother’s Day celebration. To express warmth and affection, opt for pink tulips and you’ll have a gorgeous gift any Mom will adore.

Orchids

Orchid plants are a perfect

Lillies

choice, not only are they the symbol for many children in China, but they will last a lot longer than a bunch of cut flowers.

Hugely popular choice of flower, lots of people think lilies mean ‘sympathy’, when in fact, their original meaning is ‘majesty’, which is best described as ‘impressive beauty’. In China the day lily symbolises motherhood and the white lily means purity, serenity and innocence.

If you want to go with colours instead of a particular flower choice, you don’t have to go with the traditional pink, the colour that represents a mother’s love, chose the colour that she likes best, then tell her the meaning behind it. Pink – Innocence, Unconditional Love, Thoughtfulness and Gentleness Red – Deep Love and Passion White – Purity, Truth and Perfection Yellow – Trust, Compassion and Respect

Multi-tasking Beauty, Created to Make Time For What Truly Matters

This Mother's Day, we share Mauli's top multi-tasking beauty and wellbeing gifts formulated to simplify her life.

Introducing Kirsty Marke and her lingerie line Coco La La which will debut at the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards this month. We talk exclusively to the designer..... Coco Lala is a haute couture lingerie brand focusing on making everyone that wears a Coco Lala product feel sexy and empowered, Aimed at women of all ages, shapes and sizes. I started designing lingerie after discovering it was difficult to find good quality lingerie set that was different and glamorous but came without the celebrity price tag and I realized other women must feel the same. Sensing a gap in the market CoCo lala emerged. I am always drawing little sketches of lingerie and outfits and I am forever saving photos from Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration. My new collection is entitled “SLAY” and I will be showcasing at Manchester Fashion Week in May. For more details visit www.cocolala.co.uk

Where do you see yourself in 3 years? In 3 years’ time I would like to have my own shop and be known globally. I would also like to have done a lot more shows and hopefully one day hold my very own lingerie show.

What is your background? Have you any training in fashion design? I have no official training in fashion design, I have always been very creative and I have made myself a few outfits in the past. When trying to find a lingerie set for myself online and struggled to find anything I liked I decided to start making my own. At first It was just a Facebook page for friends but then became more and more popular.

How do you want your customers to feel when they put on your designs? I want my customers to feel beautiful, I want them to feel the sexiest they ever have. A lot of time goes into my outfits, I hand sew everything myself and I love when a customer messages me after receiving an item thanking me. Nothing makes me more happy than seeing people happy in something I made.

Is there a story behind the name Coco Lala? I struggled for weeks trying to pick a name but in the end I decided to keep it simple and name it after something I love so I named my brand after my little Pomeranian Coco. Tell us about your designs? My designs are very varied, I didn’t want to create a brand and just have a few designs, I created Coco Lala to give people options and the opportunity to wear something they wouldn’t usually get a chance to. They range from small dainty lace pieces to big, bold glam sets. Where do you draw inspiration from? I have always been very creative and my bag is usually full of sketches on post its or corners of paper. My imagination runs wild sometimes. I have always been amazed by the Victoria Secret shows and from a very young aged I have been in to dancing and the theatre and I have always been in love with the outfits that come with it. A lot of my more glam bodysuits I hope to one day see on stage.

Tell us about your recent trip to Paris? My trip to Paris was amazing. I went there to see the Interfiliere lingerie show which was absolutely amazing. I love seeing other people’s work and ideas. I also went around the local shops and the fashion in Paris is outstanding. I know there is another show later on in the year which I would love to go to again.

How long does it take to create a piece from initial drawings to wearing it? The smaller pieces can take around 1-2 weeks from drawing to creating but the more detailed larger pieces can sometimes take up to 5-6 weeks. I do everything myself by hand. What can people expect at the liverpool lifestyle awards? At the Liverpool lifestyle awards to can expect to see beautiful big statement pieces. I am using these awards to show of my more glamourous side. A lot of these piece are “worn to be seen” items, So not only lingerie but also items that can be worn when out.

A North West fashion designer who launched her career at Liverpool Fashion Week recently has been invited to New York to showcase her collection. Deborah Wilkinson, an ethical fashion designer has also caught the attention of international fashion pundits after the launch of her debut collection. She has had no formal training in the way of going to college or university to study fashion or textile but after her collection was posted on instagram she received comments from the daughter of Vera Wang. Deborah taught to sew from a very young age by her grandmother who spent all of her working life in the very finest Jewish tailoring establishments in Leeds working her way up to head machinist and chief pattern cutter. She said, “From a small child i was taken around all the finest cloth halls that Leeds use to have and taught about fabric, grain, texture and what they were made of and was told that natural fibres are always the best and kinder to the skin and longer lasting, I come from a family of machinist and textile lovers as my Great Grandmother also worked in the textile industry too. Having been passed down the sewing and crafting skills from my family it was quite clear i had a talent and flare for designing just waiting for the right time to flourish.” She left her job 2 years ago and started sewing from her home in

Bradford. She said, “I never had the confidence to think I had anything special but family encouraged me to take it further as they saw a unique and different style emerging from what you normally see and a lot of people started to notice my creations as been very unique and eye catching. I learned to crochet when i was little and love it so i included it in my style, at the very base of my moral core been brought up to the ethics of all life matters and having a love of nature and natural fibres i included these into my creations.” She is currently working on a collection for Manchester Fashion Week in May and is keen to send out that message that all her material is ethically sourced in the UK. “ I was taught from a young age that cheap clothes come at a cost and most often that goes hand in hand with human exploitation /sweatshops and a great lack of respect towards nature the one thing that sustains everyone. My grand mother was very much in touch with what was happening within the tailoring trade and use to talk about it as it effected them as they started to lose work to over seas to cheaper and un ethical factories and she spoke of child labour way back then just before she retired. I learnt early that cheap is not good to humans or the earth. “

What a wonderful time I’m having lately with one of my favourite features SCOUSERS ABROAD! We’ve been to the Outback in Brazil, New Zealand, Fiji, Moscow and I love travelling the world by phone to speak to local people who have moved away to start a new life. With all of you lovely people who have friends all over the world who you Skype regularly, please have a word with them and

ask them to be my guests. All we need from you is a contact email or phone number and leave the rest to us. We usually pre-record the interview because of time zone differences – but one thing I must make clear…When you ask them to come on my show please tell them it’s on the radio…as we have rung several people who just wanted a chat!!...which is great but they’ve missed the point! So email me Pete@RadioCity.co.uk

1) The Clown – I’ve called him BY JOVE (Jupiter – which is the meaning of the world jove) – I had this amazing piece commissioned by Emma Rogers who of course created the Cilla Statue. She is truly a great talent once again from Merseyside 2) Matthew Kelly – He was one of the stars in Pride and Prejudice at the Playhouse. I’ve known Matthew for many years – he is outrageous, camp, OTT and ridiculously talented – I always remember him in Steinbecks ‘Of Mice and Men’ 3) Rebecca Ferguson – One of my favourite restaurants in the world is Little Italy in Soho, London. Their Lobster Linguine is unmatchable in my opinion. The restaurant itself becomes a party in the most unusual way, and you have to go there to experience it. It was Rebecca’s first time so I made sure she got lots of pink champagne. When you are in London it’s a must!

LIVERPOOL’S BIGGEST STAR. PETE PRICE....

4) Joey – I’m so excited War Horse is coming to the Liverpool Empire in November. I promise you, you will never see a piece of theatre like it again…. and you will fall in love with Joey, the star. 5) Whitney (Shona Mcgarty) She is really going through the run of the mill in Eastenders. I wonder who she will finish up with? 6) Outrageous – Did I really dress like this and go out in the street? This is a white leather cloak with Disney characters all over it, and I didn’t think I was camp!

Lifestyle talks to Tina Burrows, director of Sportw3 Most people have ambitions to look good, feel good and live fit, healthy lives. Despite this, few know how to take the right steps to fulfil such ambitions and sustain them. Why is this? How do you, for example, find local classes, sports, events or activities for yourself, your partner or your family? Do you find them by trawling multiple sites on the internet, discover them by word of mouth, or, stumble upon them entirely by chance? SportW3 is an interactive one-stop-shop for finding What, Where and When for all things healthy and active in your area. Therefore, SportW3 is The ‘go-to-place’ for local physical activities and health choices: it caters for your exact needs and requirements - www.sportw3.co.uk I set SportW3 up to highlight the incredible amount of sport, health and fitness resources we have in this area. Too many well-run businesses are lost under the ‘radar’ and are essentially invisible to those seeking their expertise, facilities and products. What we, at SportW3 are trying to do is to give businesses and events both a better forum and visibility in the marketplace, by promoting them on our website and through popular social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook etc. Sport plays a massive part in my personal life and that of my family. We strive to keep fit and healthy every day and make sure we get outdoors come rain or shine. Playing sport for me, is such a stress reliever after a long day at work: I would encourage anyone to take up some form of exercise and see how quickly they notice the physical and mental benefits. On a purely personal basis, just playing sport and exercising helps me relax. There’s nothing better for me than getting on my mountain bike or being active and on the move. Sitting on the sofa just doesn’t do it for me! We are proud of the benefits that we offer in being a part of SportW3. We like to make it easy for our clients – they give us their details and aims – we then tailor a campaign to raise their profile in the marketplace. We work diligently behind the scenes by promoting them on our website and through seven social media platforms. In the meantime, we encourage our clients to relax and to just focus on delivering what they’re good at - their core business. Our business plans for this year are simple. We intend to extend our reach into the whole of the North West of England by the end of 2018.

The way things are currently going for us means this aim is not only achievable, but also on track. I honestly feel so lucky that something I am so passionate about continues to play such a big role in my life – I also like being my own boss! It’s always been my ambition to help local people to participate in sports/activities in the area and increase their fitness, health and wellbeing. I also want to help local businesses in these difficult economic times, by providing them with a chance to promote their company through the website, as well as through our social media platforms; this will give them the chance to concentrate on other important matters. I just can’t wait to see all the talent that Liverpool and Merseyside has to offer. It’s such a great opportunity to show the rest of the Country what incredible individuals and facilities we have here in the North West. Health and fitness is primarily local and on our doorstep: it must be made accessible to everyone. We are just so happy to be invited and are so proud to sponsor the award for Best Independent Gym at the prestigious Liverpool Lifestyles Awards. EITC SCOOPS COMMUNICATIONS AWARD GARETH BARRY CROWNS EVERTON’S KICKS HERO footballer to Kicks coach had been immortalised by Marvel and DC Comics artist John McCrea.

Toffees midfielder Gareth Barry was on hand at Everton Free School earlier this week to recognise Everton in the Community’s Lee McArdle as a Kicks Hero as part of the Premier League’s 10-year celebration of the nationwide programme. 25-year-old Lee joined the Everton Academy when he was eight years old and signed a professional contract with the Blues in 2009 but was forced out of the game due to injury. This did not deter him from still wanting to be involved in the sport that he loves and Lee went on to study for his FA coaching badges before applying for the full-time Kicks Development Coach role that he now holds with EitC. And Premier League stalwart Gareth Barry was on hand to celebrate Lee’s achievements in overcoming adversity and announce him as an official Kicks Hero and present him with his own Premier League Kicks Hero comic strip where his journey from Premier League academy

Premier League Kicks is a youth outreach programme with the aim to create safer, stronger and more respectful communities through the development of young peoples’ potential, whilst giving young people access to facilities, coaching and mentoring. In its first decade, Premier League Kicks has engaged more than 180,000 young people in weekly football, sport and personal development sessions held at local community venues across the UK. Everton Kicks Hero Lee McArdle added: “It took a lot of mental strength to overcome my injury but I always knew that I wanted to stay working within football. The Premier League Kicks programme allows me to put my FA coaching badges to good use and means I can help young people in the area aspire

to greater things. “Working with Everton in the Community has allowed me to keep great links with the club and I’m looking forward to what the future brings. I never thought I’d have my own comic when I was younger so I’m buzzing!” Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore said: “Premier League Kicks delivers sessions for young people where they are needed most; connecting football clubs with their communities in a meaningful and sustainable way. The Kicks Heroes campaign allows us to highlight some of those inspiring individual stories – like Lee’s – and celebrate their achievements and thank the 68 Premier League, English Football League and National League clubs currently delivering the programme.” The last decade has seen Everton in the Community’s Kicks sessions engage with over 6,000 young people and last year reduced anti-social behaviour by 73 per cent and crime rates by 75 per cent in Merseyside during session times. Each year over 100 young people aged 19-25 years old will volunteer and gain valuable work experience on the programme. The Everton Football Club Company Limited, Goodison Park, Liverpool L4 4EL

FLOYD MaYweather Floyd Mayweather hits Liverpool in March 2017, courtesy of events specialists, Kong Events based in Leicester, have been working on something very special and are excited to announce that they will be bringing undefeated boxing champion, Floyd Mayweather, to Liverpool on Friday 10th March, 2017. The Echo Arena shall play host to the evening as part of ‘The Undefeated Tour 2017’. The event features a 45-minute question and answer session, with the boxing legend himself, which will be hosted by Sky Sports’ Johnny Nelson. There will also be the chance of a VIP experience, to get up close and personal with a meet and greet opportunity. Tickets also include a 2-course meal and entertainment. Boxing fans will also get the opportunity to pose questions to Floyd himself, maybe the all-important question of ‘Will he fight Conor McGregor?’ will be answered… Floyd Mayweather Jr, an American former professional boxer who competed from 1996 to 2015, many of us will regard as one of the all-time greats. Undefeated as a professional, Mayweather won 15 world titles across five divisions and was undefeated throughout his impressive career. To add to his historical accolade, Mayweather won several sporting and boxing awards, most recently being ranked the greatest pound for pound boxer of the last 25 years by ESPN earlier last year.

In anticipation of the event, Shane Whitfield, owner of Kong Events, says; “Our aim has always been to bring A star sporting legends to the UK, with an excellent value for money experience … and this one ticks all the boxes. Mayweather is an absolute highlight in our calendar for this year, and an achievement which I’m particularly proud of.” With the excitement building by all involved, the evening is not one to be missed. Following the triumph of previous Kong Events evenings, which have seen the likes of Mike Tyson, Alan Shearer and Anthony Joshua, Mayweather’s appearance hopes to further highlight the fact that Kong Events are the experts at securing high profile names at exclusive

events. As one of the most talked about Boxers in boxing history, the night promises to be one to remember. Tickets can be bought individually or per table. For further information and to purchase tickets, search ‘Floyd Mayweather’ on www. echoarena.com or visit www. kongevents.co.uk.

Am I really typing March? I can’t believe the year is flying by so fast. How are you all? Have you noticed the nights are lighter, down side is them birds are waking me up at silly O’clock in the morning tweeting Carpenters songs. I don’t mind sharing with you that I’ve put on a few ounces since Christmas. I’ve joined a local slimming group and I’m loving it. You can see one of my home made tasty slimmers soups in the picture. I like to save up my syns so I can enjoy a lovely pudding, my favourite being a juicy optical lens wipe to suck on. Yum yum. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. The plus side of losing the weight means I’ll no longer be mistaken for Katherine Jenkins. Back to that London on the 8th and 9th of April to film the new series of Crafty Beggars In The House. It’s going to be fun, talk about type casting they’ve got me making cocktails! It could get messy. Looking forward to working with Wendy and Julie again. I’ll be able to tell you more about my chat show pilot in next month’s edition. I can tease that she’s a lovely ‘lady’ who wakes you up in the morning on TV. Right, let’s see what folk are whinging about this month. Take care.

Dear Bev I know you champion people who have a carry a few extra pounds. Can I pick your brains for some advice. My daughter is getting married in the summer and I want a dress that will do justice to my size. I’ve enclosed a photograph of me recently. Rachel, Rock Ferry. Dear Rachel Sorry I couldn’t publish the photograph due to decency laws. As for something for your daughter’s wedding to do justice to your size, can I suggest a marquee. Bev Dear Bev I have just had a harrowing half term with the children and am now dreading the next school holidays. Do you have any advice on what I could do with them? I don’t think I can cope with another week like the last one. Trina, Toxteth. Dear Trina I could feel the pain in your letter. I have no sympathy whatsoever, you had a choice, kids or a life. Might I suggest you pop them into care for the duration of the holiday and book a weeks all inclusive somewhere hot and exotic. Hope this helps. Bev

MARCH 17th 2017 St Patrick’s Day is one of the biggest events of the year in Liverpool. With so many Liverpudlians with Irish connections and family, is it little wonder so many of us head out to the local pub to raise a glass of black gold to toast St Patrick? And even if you have no connections with Ireland at all – St Patrick’s Day is one of the best party days of the year, all are welcome and all will have fun, and the taste of Guinness grows on you after the second pint. The story of St Patrick and how he became the patron saint of Ireland goes like this. He was born in the 2nd half of the 4th century, where he was born was a bit sketchy but it may have been in the lowlands of Scotland or Wales but not Ireland. His real name was probably Maewyn Succat. His father, Calpornius, was a Roman-British army officer and a deacon. Patrick’s life was ordinary and unexceptional, until the age of 16 when dramatic events led changed his life forever and put the history of Ireland on a new course.

Irish pirates kidnapped Patrick when he was 16, he was taken back to Ireland and sold into slavery. The next six years were spent imprisoned in the north of the island and he worked as a herdsmen of sheep and pigs on Mount Slemish in Co. Antrim. During this time he became increasingly religious, and blamed his own kidnapping and slavery as a punishment from god for his lack of faith. It was then that he had a vision, in it he was told to escape by stowing away on a boat back to Britain back to his family.

Once home, he had another vision, he had to return to Ireland as a missionary and spread the word about God. He didn’t go straight away, instead he went to France to train at a monastery, possibly under St Germain, the bishop of Auxerre, and he dedicated this period of his life to learning. 12 years later he returned to Irish shores as a bishop sent with the Pope’s blessing, thus bringing Christianity to Ireland.

Lifestyle’s own music guru

Mullet The Blue Sky Helped in no small part by stratospheric levels of expectation and a Live Aid performance which had showcased their unique live brilliance to a watching world, U2’s masterpiece, The Joshua Tree, produced by ‘Father’ Brian Eno, became the fastest selling album in British history when it was released 30 years ago on 9th March 1987. Bono and The Hedge’s cowboy hats eventually got on everyone’s nerves over the next few years as U2 single-handedly kept the world’s ticket touts in hair gel and leather bomber jackets for the rest of the decade. But when the traffic stopped in downtown LA in June 1987, as Larry and the lads performed on the roof of a liquor store at the corner of 7th and South Main while making a video for

‘Where The Streets Have No Name’ it became clear that U2 had become ‘the biggest kick-ass rock n roll band in the world’, as Bono declared live via satellite from the cement-grey bowels of a Midwest football stadium on the last ever episode of The Tube.. Despite the inevitable sneering of many who are predictably opposed to a band of mostly born-again Christians conquering the rock and roll citadel, the phenomenon of U2’s appeal to ‘kids’ in 1987 was perhaps best illustrated by the legendary television series Word In Action. The ground-breaking Granada current affairs programme produced an episode in the summer of 1987 which followed a coach party of people from both sides of civil war-torn Belfast as they travelled happily and enthusiastically together as fans to a U2 concert in Croke Park, Dublin, itself the scene of a notorious British Army atrocity on ‘Blood Sunday’ in 1920. up until Live Aid had been the band’s mainstay had already lost interest, especially after dad started playing ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ on the car stereo and they moved on to the chemical enhancement of an emerging underground acid house scene that was stirring and about to explode the following year and beyond into a cultural revolution.

LAWRENSONS PURSUIT Happiness, journey or destination? Life is about the pursuit of happiness, apparently. No more than a day passes without another self-help book coming out, at least that’s how it feels. I have to admit to a certain addiction to self-help books, except I rarely get more than half way through before I say “ok, I get your message but you could have said it in half the time”. The goal of the author is to get me to read the book from coverto-cover, but that feels like it’s a real commitment to me, maybe something I’ll do on my holidays. It’s straightforward really ... but for some reason I wasn’t committed enough to completing the simple task of reading a book through to the last page. It turns out that my goal and the author’s goal are different. Eventually I worked out that my goal was to get the message from the book not just to get to the end of it, I had been confusing a task with a goal. We all have tasks at work and in our social lives that we have to commit to, but there are some tasks that we just don’t have to do, we do it more out of habit. I have set myself a goal to have 2 hours per week to ride around my home town on my scooter. This isn’t

Of

gROWTh

new year’s resolution stuff, this is a plain and simple question that I asked myself, “I love riding around on my scooter ... and the more aimless the journey the happier I am ... so how do I get more time to do it?”. Two things had to happen for this to work ... firstly I had to create the time .... Secondly, I had to make sure I did it, not just sit down and think about it. If you see me on the East Lancashire Road (or Route 66 as I like to call it) I’ll be the one grinning from ear-to-ear ... mostly because I’m enjoying the ride but also because I have set myself a goal and achieved it ... I know it’s only a tiny achievement but I’m the one with a smile on my face. Maybe life isn’t about the pursuit of happiness ... maybe we have it the wrong way around ... maybe life is about the happiness of pursuit.

Hello Lifestyle Readers, I can’t quite believe that we are already waving goodbye to February and preparing for spring – although the bitter weather might indicate otherwise! My very busy start to the year in January led to a more relaxed February. I spent the majority of my spare time in the Liverpool town of Formby where myself and my partner Laura are renovating our home. We have owned the house for a while but felt it was time to renovate it and bring it up to a standard we both love. It is currently requiring a lot of our attention, but all of the hard work will pay off when we can sit back and enjoy the results. I have mentioned in previous blogs that my ambassadorship has been renewed for both Wagner and Silverline, and in February I worked with them both, individually, on some great video projects. The finished videos will provide DIY tips and advice which I am hoping will help both amateur and professionals alike. I am so proud to represent these fantastic brands – both have also been an intrinsic part in providing tools and essentials I needed to renovate the house! Many cold evenings in February were spent on the sofa with Laura planning our 30-day trip which, after much planning, we embark on this month. We are travelling to Thailand where we will visit Bangkok and Koh Tao, then to Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and finishing up in Dubai. While we are travelling, we are going to be doing a whole host of weird and wonderful activities – I don’t want to give too much away as I will tell you all about it next month, but we will certainly be reaching new depths, heights and extremes! I look forward to checking in with you all next month and sharing stories from our travels! For now, though, I leave you with a DIY tip perfect for getting your garden ready for the change of season.

All the best,

FITTING A WINDOW BOX TO THE WALL TOOLS: Hammer Action Drill | Circular Saw | Sander | Drill Bits | 8mm Rawl Plugs | 3-inch Screws | Spirit Level | Tape Measure | 3”x2” Timber | Wall Brackets Once you have built your window box you can either use it as a flower trough or mount it to an exterior wall. If you are mounting your window box to an exterior wall you will need to secure some wall brackets into your brickwork to hold the weight of the box. Using your drill driver set on the hammer action; use a masonry drill bit to drill into your brickwork, matching the number of holes in your brackets. Push 8mm rawl plugs into the holes and drive in 3-inch screws to firmly secure the brackets to the brickwork. Next, place your box onto the brackets ensuring it is perfectly centred. Drill two holes though the back of your box and while holding the box with one hand, stick a pencil through each hole and mark the brickwork. This way, you will know exactly where to drill the holes into the brickwork. Again, using your drill driver set on hammer action and a masonry drill bit, drill into your brickwork. Next, push 8mm rawl plugs into the holes and drive in 3-inch screws to hold your box in position. Place a spirit level on top of the box to ensure it is level. You are now ready to fill your trough or window box with soil and start planting beautiful spring blooms.

community raises funds for dream wedding for terminally ill couple Linda (41) had given birth 16 weeks before to her first and only child, baby Breyer. After giving birth Linda had Puritary Embolism and went into a coma. Darren who himself was struggling with mobility was left to look after baby Breyer. Linda was in hospital for 3 weeks and was left with Bell’s Palsy and other medical issues. Since then Darren who spent his early years in the Army (47) has been diagnosed with Motor Nuerones Disease.

their hearts and picture what life would be like for all concerned in this family at present and in the future.

Darren has had to give up his job and is now unable to walk unaided and is deteriorating on a rapid basis. Darren and Linda’s dream was to get married after the birth of their daughter and live a full life together this however is not now going to be possible. We raised the funds to enable Darren and Linda to fulfill at least part of their dream by getting married. The reason we are raising the funds is because Darren also has no life insurance or source of income and is having to sell his car to pay for his pending funeral. The support will mean that the family will have something special to remember and Breyer may not have Darren around for her childhood but she will have life long memories & photographs and a DVD of their special day with her being part of it. Darren is such an inspiration and truly admired for his outlook and positivity despite what life has thrown at him and his family. We are asking people to look inside

Finally they tied the knot on Sunday 19th February at 30 James Street Hotel Liverpool. Liverpool always gets very bad press but it just shows that in times when people are in need, like times like this, what a great city it really is. Darren was on Granda Reports on monday to show awareness about his illness.

The funds were raised quickly to enable Darren to fully participate as his consultant has informed him he cannot give him a time on his life expectancy and he is deteriorating rapidly. Darren has been informed he will not last the 17 weeks and has been deteriorating drastically every day.

The wedding dream really did come true, even Britains Got Talents Boogie Storm performed. Big thank you to Six 15 Events, Garry Baker, Holly Ellison. So many people put a lot of effort into making their dream come true, Tracy Gerrard and Jen from the makeover room, Bouquet Liverpool, The Celebration
