From Nugent Care to Nugent Patron and LFC Legend, Phil Thompson, helped staff at Nugent launch their new brand In this, Nugent’s 135th year, the organisation has worked with two Liverpool based companies, digital agency Mashbo and communications consultants, Bread Media, to develop a new strategic approach to marketing and communications, a new brand, and new digital tools including 4 websites.
N034
The most visible aspect is the name change, from Nugent Care to Nugent. This represent a major milestone for an organisation with such an important legacy, having originated in 1881 when Father James Nugent inaugurated the Liverpool Catholic Children’s Protection Society. The development of new websites, wearenugent.org, being the main Nugent site,
the first new Nugent site for over 12 years, provides a 21st century online experience and alongside Nugent’s social media sites will be the main portal for information about the services available alongside news, case studies and sector news. Nugent’s schools, Nugent House School and Clarence High School will also have new sites, as will Nugent Adoption. Nugent’s patron Phil Thompson said: “Nugent is a terrific charity and it’s been pleasure to be part of it for over 10 years. The new brand is refreshing, it’s going to help Nugent to reach even more vulnerable people across the North West. “
Nugent’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Mike James said: “We have a clear strategy now that aims to build our profile and help people to access our services. We are here to stay and will continue helping vulnerable people for years to come, building on our amazing legacy, strengthening our vison and resolve and leading the way in innovation throughout our services.” Get in touch with Nugent on 0151 261 2000, email info@nugentcare.org, or visit our new site:

Lee KeLLy
The Prince of PanTomime So you started performing before producing and directing Yes, I started performing in panto from my first year at Elliot-Clarke, I was hooked and I have never missed a panto since. But even from a young age, I was always interested in the choreographing and stage management side of performances. I dreamed of being the director in the audience like Michael Douglas in A Chorus line. When I was 14 I was performing at the Neptune, and I sat on the stage, watching thinking, “I’m going to produce this one day” Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the yearly family outing to enjoy the pantomime at the Epstein. And for the past several years Lee Kelly, owner of the acclaimed LHK productions, have been the creators of those pantomimes that fascinated audiences and made them shout, “he’s behind you,” and cheer at every performance. So, as we are about to embark on this year’s festive season our editor, Joy Lewis interviewed Lee Kelly. To find out more about who this Prince of Pantomime is, and what drives his mission to make Christmas sparkle for every member of the audience, oh yes he does!
14
Hi Lee I want to find out more about you –can you tell me what got you into the performing arts? I have been dancing as far back as I can remember. I used to dance around the house to Sonja – which is why I am such good friends with her now, it was her music that always got me moving. Because I was always performing at home, my mum put me in Elliott-Clarke Performing Arts School, which at the time was the best drama and dance school in Liverpool.
When was your big break into producing? I was asked to choreograph my first professional panto at just 18. But it’s not just been pantomimes that I produce I have done all sorts of musical theatre, producing and choreographing from a young age. At 21 Phil Redmond asked me to choreograph, “Our Benny,” which stated Bernie Nolan. Then in 2008, the Capital of Culture year, the Empire asked back again, this time to choreograph Cilla Black in Cinderella. Panto is very British, but in Liverpool especially it seems that little bit more special Yes, I love panto, especially in Liverpool, here we do it that bit differently than anywhere else in the country, it’s just that little bit more magical here. Especially when its performed at the Epstein, there is something about that theatre, it’s size, history and beauty perhaps that give the pantos that extra sparkle. Is this what made you create LHK Productions? In part yes, but I have always wanted to be in stage management. LHK productions
started 11 years ago, now it has 3 main branches, The Production Company – which came first, shortly after we grew even more and we now have an established LHK Youth Company and LHK Management Company too. So you can look after the kids right up till adulthood? Yes, I love working with and finding talented people, especially kids. It’s how I started out after all. Panto is such a British institution, but I have heard you have produced in in other countries too? How was it received? Yes I have been invited to bring my pantomimes all over the world, Dubai, France, Lebanon and Qatar to name a few. It is a British institution, and maybe that’s why my pantos are so popular when they tour in these countries, they have never seen anything like it before, but there is dancing and singing of very well-known songs so it is always very well received. To learn more about this year’s panto at the Epstein or how to get in touch with LHK Productions visit: www.lhkproductions.co.uk

n o s l i W y Rick
an interview with Kaiser Chiefs‘
It’s not often an interview with somebody so famous, so used to the media, would be so candid, so unjaded and so passionate about their love for the music they create and the band that they are in. But that is exactly what our editor Joy Lewis found when she interviewed Ricky Wilson from The Kaiser Chiefs just ahead of the release of the band’s new album, “Stay Together” You have a new album coming out October 7th – and it’s your 6th album, Stay Together. The first release Hole in my soul – clearly a love song, is it aimed at anyone in particular? Well yes, it is about somebody and over the next few months when we are on the road promoting the album and appearing on red carpets eventually everybody will see who the song is about because that person will be with me. But for now at least I’m keeping it under wraps. Don’t get me wrong I understand that people want to know, I did that because I know it would sell more records - I totally understand the interest, and to be brutally honest it’s a game, I know what the rules are - so I’m stretching it out for a little bit longer. Where did you get the album title, stay Together from? We kept sending each other ‘clever’ titles, but then we thought: what’s the repeated theme in these songs? And weirdly — because we don’t write that many love songs — we realised that what held the whole album together was a sense of some sort of monogamy. So Stay Together is was.
16
The Kaiser Chiefs have been famous for 12 years now, are you still as passionate now as you were in the beginning? I am hungrier and more passionate now than ever, because now I have tasted what this life is like, and I never want it to stop. I will do whatever it takes to make it work, I am doing my dream job, it’s the professional fun that I always wanted to do. I will carry on making the music I want to make, for me releasing a new album is a really exciting time. The other day Ken Bruce played my record on the radio, I was made up, so excited to hear it. That feeling has never gone away, never waned.

What made you want to work with Brian Higgins on this album? The delicious thing about working with Brian is that he has a very unique insight into the Kaiser Chiefs. When we first started out all those years ago Girls Aloud were our biggest rival, and Brian was their producer, so he watched us very very closely, and over the years he always kept a professional eye on us. Because of this he knows us so well, what works for the band and what people like about us. Kaiser chiefs have been together for 12 years – only losing one member – where most others have split, split and reformed or split and attempted to reform but failed and become tabloid fodder - how have you managed it? Because we love what we do, and we never wanted it to stop. Other bands who are doing well split up sometimes because management have told certain members that they don’t need the band, that they can be just as successful or more so on their own – which almost never works out for them. With us, it’s different. We are all good at different things, we all know that together we
18
work. And we talk to each other. We are happy, successful who wants to mess or risk that? Not us. How do you keep up with your own life – The Voice, Radio X on Sundays, summer festivals oh and the Kaiser Chiefs? I enjoy it, it’s not working, its professional dicking about. The band took a year off once. I spent a year watching TV, watching other people on red carpets, seeing other bands doing what I love doing, I hated it. And we had a hill to climb to get back a year later because we disappeared for a while and naturally the music industry had moved on. I’m never going to let that happen again, so I keep myself very busy doing what I like doing, and in turn it promotes Kaiser Chiefs. So would you consider doing another talent show? Yeah I would consider anything. I know for a fact that I will be jealous of the next person sat in that chair on the Voice. But I’ve moved on from that now. Everything I do is for the Kaiser Chiefs, so if another well know talent show came knocking, or something else for that matter then, for sure I will consider it.
I may not always be comfortable to do it, or confident, but if it helps the band stay in the limelight, keeps us in people’s conscience then I will consider anything, because I never want this to stop. I noticed that you are touring but not visiting the best and most musical city in the world – Liverpool. Any chance more tour dates will be added? Yes sorry, it’s for no other reason that we can’t do every city – but it just means we will be adding Liverpool to the list of places for later on in 2017. Liverpool is a great city with amazing musical heritage, Britain needs Liverpool again. In a post Brexit world, we need something big to show the world, something positive to launch us on the world stage again but for the right reasons, we need another Beatles, and maybe, hopefully Liverpool can provide it again. ELLA PURNELL
Ella Purnell spent a lot of time up in the air whilst filming Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children - and she loved it.
An interview so exclusive you need to pick a copy Lifestyle Monthly Ella is up Emma, one of a of group of children who have from your– known local outlets tolive read unique abilities as peculiars – who in an it! orphanage on a remote island protected by the exotic Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) in Tim Burton’s eagerly awaited blockbuster, based on the best selling novel by Ransom Riggs.
Which perculiar child do you play? I’m playing Emma and they changed her power from the book, so Emma now floats and Olive plays with fire. There are a couple of other things that they changed from the book like some of the kids’ ages. I spent a long time working with a movement coach and I decided that she isn’t fierce and fiery but more of a hopeless romantic and I think that makes more sense because of the love story with her and Jake. So the way I interpret Emma is that she is a hopeless romantic who has failed to age and had her heartbroken by Abe. Abraham is Jake’s grandfather. Explain how he fits into Emma’s life? Abe is Jake’s grandfather and he had a peculiar power that maybe Jake also has which is to seek out and kill the monsters, known as Hollows, that are hunting the children and he is really the only one that can save them. And with Emma and Jake, it’s teenage love. So you’re playing her as a teenager but she is someone who has lived for a long time. What’s that like? Emma is really 112, she has an assertiveness and she knows how the world works and she is Miss Peregrine’s most trusted of the children. There are two sides to Emma. On the one hand she is comfortable with that and she becomes reliant on the day being exactly the same, the way it is reset every day. And there’s the other part of her that has been in that world for so long that just yearns to escape and live an adventurous life that they have all been denied.

NINA SIMONE NiNa - a story about me aNd NiNa simoNe
commenting on major historical events.
Unity Theatre and Riksteatern (Sweden) present Nina – a story about me and Nina Simone, featuring award-nominated West End actress, international director and Unity Theatre patron Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE at Unity Theatre from 15 – 29 October 2016.
Upon asking these questions I re-connected with Nina Simone. Not Billie Holliday, not Sarah Vaughn, not Aretha Franklin but Nina. Nina Simone. I connected with all of her; Nina’s blackness, Nina’s voice, her pain, her artistic courage and her music. I came to the conclusion that if the world was losing its way then Nina Simone is the Satnav back home.
Nina - a Story about Me and Nina Simone is a theatrical explosion of rage, love, doubt and fear in a world where racism, the charge for civil rights and Nina Simone’s exceptional legacy still passionately resonate, featuring the iconic songs of Nina Simone, with music performed by a band of extraordinary musicians. Josette Bushell-Mingo OBE said about the production: “Nina – a Story about Me and Nina Simone is about legacy. It’s about the journey from oppression to freedom; it’s a journey that still, after all these years, isn’t over. I have come to a point in my life where the increasing deaths of black men and women in police custody, openly racist & xenophobic rhetoric and the apparent institutional racist attitudes of governments and key institutions made me question how far we must go to truly gain our freedom? This lead to me questioning the artist’s role in
When I began the artistic process for Nina – a Story about Me and Nina Simone, I thought that the piece was going to be about my relationship with Nina. I have found that it is much more than that. The production is about our relationship to each other, through the prism of blackness. Nina - a story about Me and Nina Simone celebrates how Nina changed the world and in turn, changed us all. I’m proud and delighted to be opening Nina – a story about me and Nina Simone in Liverpool at Unity Theatre this October. Unity Theatre was one of my first homes, in a city that I love.” Nina Simone was one of the most extraordinary African American artists of the twentieth century and is an icon of American music. She was a consummate musical storyteller who used her remarkable talent to create a legacy of liberation, empowerment and love through a magnificent body of work. Nina - a story about me and Nina Simone runs from 15-29 October, 2016 at Unity Theatre, Liverpool. Book now at 0151 709 4988 or unitytheatreliverpool.co.uk

TWOPENCE TO CROSS THE MERSEY
AUTUMN TOUR Stage Play Version Of Helen Forrester’s Best-Selling Book has started its Autumn tour at the Royal Court and is running there until 8th October before embarking on a North West Tour. Following a hugely successful 2015 Merseyside tour, Twopence to Cross the Mersey will now embark on its biggest tour to date, a unique tour that covers seven venues across England’s North West and North Wales. The smash-hit play, based on the best-selling autobiography, Helen Forrester’s Twopence to Cross the Mersey will open at Liverpool’s Royal Court on Tuesday 20th September for a three week run. The play will then tour to six further venues in Rhyl, Preston, Southport, Warrington, Stockport and St Helens, taking the show to its readers. There are just two changes to the line-up who generated rave reviews when the show enjoyed a successful six-week tour in Spring 2015. The cast now features actors Phil Hearne and Tom Cawte as part of the 8-strong ensemble cast. Phil Hearne will play a variety of roles in Twopence and is looking forward to treading the familiar boards of Royal Court Liverpool, where he has regularly entertained audiences in shows including Good Golly Miss Molly and the Council Depot Blues. He was part of the West End castfor Blood Brothers, and his television credits include Coronation Street. Tom Cawte brings a wealth of experience to the
role of Alan, Helen’s younger brother. His theatre credits include the 2015 national tour of The Lone Pine Club and Boys of the Empire Production Sandel at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013. Film and television credits include the upcoming BBC series Witless and London Fields. The line-up sees the return of Emma Dears (Judy & Liza, Les Miserables) as Mother; Christopher Jordan (Moving On, Coronation Street) as Father; Maria Lovelady as Helen; and together with Tom Cawte as Alan, they make up the Forrester family. Eithne Browne (Brookside, Brick Up The Mersey Tunnel); Jake Abraham (Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Game of Thrones); Roy Carruthers (Night Collar, Tales from Haunted Liverpool); and Phil Hearne all take on lead roles, as well as supplementary characters throughout. Son of Helen Forrester, Robert Bhatia said “The play is great! I saw it last year and Maria Lovelady was utterly convincing as my mother”. Helen Forrester’s Twopence to Cross the Mersey tells the true story of a young girl and her formerly wealthy family as they are suddenly thrown into poverty during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Leaving behind the nannies, servants and comfortable middle-class life in the South West of England, they uproot their shattered lives and choose Liverpool as the place to start again to rebuild their dreams and fortune. Unbeknown to them however, a terrible shock awaits them. The play is staged by Pulse Records Ltd in collaboration with producer and stage writer Rob Fennah and producer Bill Elms, they are joined by director Bob Eaton.

Christmas is not far off and I want to talk about Christmas Cards. The card shops are always full but I wonder now who sends Christmas cards. Mine are depleted every year, (perhaps people don’t like me anymore!) Once upon a time in panto I could fill the walls but now they are starting to look bare. I wonder also if people are cutting down on Christmas presents. Without sounding humbug do you think Christmas is fading slightly? Food for thought.. 1) Jonathan Harvey – This man is one of Britain’s top scriptwriters and has brought some of the greatest story-lines to Coronation Street. He has a new book out called ‘The History of Us’ which will be another best seller. Such a talent, and a scouser! 2) Andy McClusky – OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) He has just come back from the USA on the most ridiculous sell out tour going from one state to another. He has also been doing sell out concerts in Europe and he told me he has a new album next year, and I for one can’t wait. I love it when new fans discover classic music. 3) Abby Clancy – Her television career goes from strength to strength. She is an amazing beautiful Liverpool girl, who keeps herself incredibly fit. She has her own range of clothes, and has proven skills on the dance floor on Strictly, where

she wowed the audiences. But she has never forgotten her roots. 4) John Bishop – He has landed his own chat show, “In Conversation with…” it will be a series of intimate and revealing interviews on a new digital channel ‘W.’ He has come a long way since being the host of the comedy club in Liverpool and his fabulous weekend show on Radio City. 5) Dionne Warwick – I have nothing to say she is just a living legend and I adore her music. I spent some quality time with her 6) Anita Dobson – Bryan Mays wife is a fine actress and has done so much in her career, but to me she will always be Angie Watts in Eastenders – the best ever land lady of the Queen Vic. She is joining the 10th anniversary London cast of Wicked.

er! k o h c t a h t p u Tighten by Natalie Morris My main focus for October is the statement choker taking me back to the 90’s; to the skinny bit of black velvet or leather that decorated many necks completing outfits as witnessed on the red carpet; celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Kate Hudson and Kendell Jenner have been spotted using the choker to add edge to their full length gowns. This seasons chokers however have took a contemporary twist updating the use of velvet by incorporating colour, metal detailing and aiming for a major statement by wearing chokers that fully cover your neck. The beauty of this accessory is that they are often handmade and requires skilled craftsmanship to create their intricate and unique designs. As with all jewellery they can be as bland, loud or customised as
right underneath the armpit for a more secure and secretive approach as small bags at Prada were worn as an accessory around the neck or hanging down the body on a belt along with other charms and attachments. Celine opted for a more casual laid back display with a pouch bag tied around the waist hanging like a decoration. To conclude, Autumn/Winter 2016 is expressing its attention to detail through exaggerated trimmings, manipulation of accessories and modernising vintage fabrics through the use of subtle elements rather than throughout a garment. With all this in mind I believe small adaptations will go a long way to keep your winter wardrobe gleaming as the dark nights draw in.
you like for individuality. The statement trend doesn’t stop at your neck but the tips of your fingers as wearing embellished, ornate and the more over the top your gloves are the better this winter. This season’s eye catcher for me has been the alternative ways to styling handbags manipulated around the body and the exaggeration of sleeves and cuffs. As sleeves are getting longer, hand bag straps are getting shorter as Prada, Celine and Proenza demonstrated in their Ready to Wear Autumn/Winter 2016 collections. Side bags at Proenza were sitting

“A T I C K I N G TIME BOMB” A high flying Liverpool entrepreneur who has lost everything to Lyme Disease is launching a national campaign to encourage doctors and medical staff to receive proper training in recognising the early symptoms. Emma Dolan 41, was bitten by a tick 16 years ago but never received a course of antibiotics straight away which would have prevented her from developing the chronic illness she is living with today. Lyme disease is now one of the fastest growing diseases in the western world with more than an estimated 65,000 diagnosis in Europe. However the true figure could be much more due to under reporting and lack of proper recognition by the medical experts. Instead she was advised by medical staff at the time that she did not needed to be tested for Lyme Disease and was told her symptoms were due to ME, a diagnosis which has now been disproved. Further NHS tests at her insistence also came back negative but refusing to accept this, Emma send off her blood samples to a laboratory in Germany and USA and both results came back with a positive diagnosis The campaign, TICKING TIME BOMB, is encouraging greater awareness of Lyme Disease. A letter is being presented to the Prime Minister this month. Emma, from Sefton Park, is now in the late stages of the disease, in which her body is riddled with the crippling bacterial disease. She is bed bound and is reliant on round the clock care. She can only venture out with the aid of a wheelchair for short periods
of time which leaves her exhausted and in chronic pain. Simple tasks we take for granted such as reaching for a cup of tea can trigger acute and painful muscle spasms which require her to lay down for hours. Emma said, “It’s incredibly sad and wrong that the NHS in our country is not equipped to treat people with Lyme Disease. Doctors aren’t properly trained to understand the symptoms that if treated quickly can prevent the disease from spreading. If this is not taken seriously there will be an epidemic of Lyme Disease in the next 10 years. “Ticks are breeding and not dying because of our midl winters”, Emma added, “ Their bedding grounds are predominately around our countryside, parks and coastal regionsrolling in the grass or sand dunes can be potentially fatal” Due to her health Emma was forced to sell her successful PR company and is raising money to fund a second trip to Washington DC for specialist treatment. She already has spent £30,000 to pay for vital treatment earlier this year but further add treatment details here are required to prevent add details here.

Lyme disease, also known as Lyme borreliosis, is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the Borrelia type. The most common sign of infection is an expanding area of redness, known as erythema migrans, that begins at the site of a tick bite about a week after it has occurred. Emma is launching a petition on change, org and is encouraging a debate in Parliament to get see if medical staff can get better trained in recognising the symptoms and providing treatment in the nhs. Ticking Time Bomb will be raising funds for Emma’s vital treatment, as well as helping others in similar circumstances.

DARREN VISION The Challenge of Change It would be somewhat of an understatement to say that the country we live in is going through change. Change in focus, direction, leadership and even the people we run with, the wider team, Europe. Times like this can bring anxiety, uncertainty and even fear; fear of the unknown.
Change is constant
We have all heard the line that the only constant in our lives is change, yet when change comes we feel surprised and anxious of what this change means for us and how it will affect us. The great news is, that although we cannot stop change, we can learn to understand the process of change then decide how we respond and react to that change irrespective of what it is. If we can’t change the situation we can change the way we THINK about the situation, and then our perception changes. So if change is always happening to us, what CAN we do about it? Well, the first thing is to understand the usual change process that most of us go through when change happens, below are the natural responses most of us have when change occurs. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Shock – is this really happening? Denial – This can’t be happening? Anger – why is this happening to me? Frustration – I wish it was another way? Bargaining – Maybe I could compromise Acceptance – Ok if this is the way it is Embrace – How do I work best with this?
Maybe we can’t change what happens to use be we can change how we think and approach that change. “If we always do what we have done then I’m sure you will agree we will always get what we’ve got”. If we want things to be different we have to do different things. To truly make a difference we require what we have
46
always and will always require, and that is strong Leadership, A Vision, A plan and a strong team. That goes for the country, and that goes for all of us who want to control our future and make a positive impact in our lives. We are asking the leadership of the country if they have a Vision and a plan, because we know its importance. We need to know where we are heading. Do you have a vision and plan for you and your future? Here is a 5 point plan for us all including the countries leadership to move forward and make progress. 1. Acknowledge what is in our control and what is not with regards to these changes. 2. Accept that change HAS happened! 3. Embrace the changes and look at what potential opportunities this may present now and in the future. 4. Accept responsibility for your responses, only you can decide how you feel and what you think. 5. Take control, Take action to move on and move forward. 2 caterpillars are sat on a leaf when a great beautiful butterfly flutters by on the spring breeze; one caterpillar says to the other, “you will never get me up in one of those”! now we all know that they have little choice in this matter as change is going to happen to them whether they like it or not, and a butterfly they will be. They don’t know the beauty that change will bring them, they only see from where they sit, on a leaf. Our future can be whatever we chose to make it. darren@dasala.co.uk or @dasaladarren

How to do MiaMi ViP style Whether you are only staying for a few nights or longer, it’s easy to completely lose track of time (and days) in Miami, so it pays to have the insider info on how to do Miami VIP style... Before you land… Rule 1. Make contact with an established promoter via their preferred platform, Watsapp. Let them know how long you’re visiting for, whether you’re interested in clubs, yacht or pool parties and how many of you there are in your group. My favourite promoters in Miami are @VIPeverywhere managed by Gabriel Deluz and Oscar Correa. Before you arrive, Watsapp Gabriel on +1 305 763 3667 (also covers LA) or Oscar on +1 786 879 2217. Gentlemen; Miami is going to be an expensive experience, so the most cost effective and drama-free method of organizing your Miami nights is by booking tables with the promoters in advance. Rule 2. Ladies; to make the promoter’s lives easier, send a group photo and info so that they can quickly ascertain which venues to direct your group to based on how many of you there are, music preferences etc. Last month, I spent the weekend with the @ VIPeverywhere team to experience Miami VIP style… dInner & drInks @ b … yblos Every Friday, a select group of very lucky ladies are invited to enjoy a special dinner at Byblos serving delicious Eastern Mediterranean food and wine. Advertising is everywhere. You can’t get away from it. But to be successful in advertising you have to be memorable. Take McDonalds for example. Love or loathe their restaurants they are the experts in reinventing themselves, redesigning the layout and changing the style often. CRAIG PHILLIPS DIY
Hello Lifestyle Readers, I can’t quite believe that we are nearly finished with September, where has this year gone? Despite it going very quickly, September was very busy for me and reached new heights… literally, but before I explain that, I must start at the beginning. The month began with a flight to Italy for a wedding. The marriage was between two of my great friends and it was a stunning day full of festivities, laughter and the opportunity to catch up with some people I haven’t seen for a long time. It was also a week of eating plenty of fresh pasta and pizza and after the triathlon I mentioned in my previous column it was a much needed trip away. Upon my arrival home my thoughts headed straight to the Checkatrade abseil which took place on Sunday 11th September which I had been looking forward to for quite some time. The Spinnaker Tower is 170 metres tall (that’s taller than Big Ben!) and myself and 40 other people were crazy enough to abseil off the side of it. The weather was on my side and so was my beautiful girlfriend who provided moral support and abseiled too. My knees were a bit wobbly at first but after the initial few steps I was fine and was able to take in the vast views at the same time. The day was in aid of the Lighthouse Foundation who do phenomenal work for the victims of the 2015 Nepal earthquake and I was honoured to help raise a total of £7,000 for the charity. Friday 16th September it was back to Liverpool for yet another worthy event. I had the honour of hosting the prestigious Echo Awards ceremony at the Rum Warehouse in the Titanic Hotel. The awards celebrate the unsung heroes of Merseyside and on the evening I was joined on stage by Hollyoaks’ Jessica Fox who helped me ensure the awards ran smoothly. The evening was a great success and we had the pleasure of meeting lots of local people who had truly inspiring stories to tell, it is an evening I will certainly remember for a long time! I finish this column with a DIY tip for you all to help you as the colder weather is quickly approaching.
All the best,
Craig. Craig Phillips is an ambassador for Checkatrade.com. If you have a job that’s too big or complicated for you to do yourself, visit the website to find a reviewed, approved and reputable tradesperson.

Spirit level Plywood 2”x1” timber battens Rawl plugs Screws Pipe insulation
In the case of frozen pipes, prevention is the key. To avoid the misery and expense of ruptured pipes, the solution is as simple as insulating your external pipes and boxing them in. Begin by cladding all visible pipe work with pipe insulation. This usually comes in both 15mm and 22mm diameter and can be cut with a trimming knife or scissors. Next, you will need to secure wooden battens to the wall, just above and below your pipes. Cut your 2”x1” timber battens the same length as your pipe work and using your drill driver and a wood drill bit, drill a pilot hole though the timber battens. Holding your timber battens in place mark your brickwork so you know exactly where you need to drill the holes and using a masonry drill bit, drill into your brickwork. Now, insert rawl plugs and screw the battens firmly to the wall above and below your pipes. Measure the distance between the timber battens fixed above and below your pipes, and cut your plywood down to size. Again drill some pilot holes using a wood drill bit and use screws to secure the plywood firmly to the battens. Your pipes should now be covered and protected from the cold weather.
