RIHANNA FENTY BEAUTY MAKEUP LAUNCH
6
g lobal superstar rihanna
launched her beauty brand, fenty beauty last month worldwide and liverpool did not miss out. with the breakfast launch at harvey nics we were treated to a private showcase of her new beauty brand at their exclusive counter in store by amanda moss abOut fentY beautY
before she was badgalriri: music, fashion and beauty icon, robyn rihanna Fenty was a little girl in barbados transfixed by her mother’s lipstick. the first time she experienced makeup for herself, she never looked back. makeup became her weapon of choice for selfexpression—a way to radiate her ever-changing mood—and it powered a fearless take on beauty that helped her become the boundary-breaking icon she is today. rihanna was inspired to create Fenty beauty after years of experimenting with the best-of-the-best in beauty — and still seeing a void in the industry for products that performed across all skin types and tones. she launched a makeup line “so that women everywhere would be included,” focusing on a wide range of traditionally hard-to-match skin tones, creating formulas that work for all skin types, and pinpointing universal shades. Fenty beauty products are designed to feel lightweight, even as they deliver buildable coverage that effortlessly layers, to ultimately “make skin look like skin.” most importantly, rihanna creates makeup to inspire “makeup is there for you to have fun with,” she says. “it should never feel like pressure. it should never feel like a uniform. Feel free to take chances, and take risks, and dare to do something new or different.” rihanna spent years refining her goto makeup technique, testing it backstage, on stage, and in real life. now, with her own lineup of products masterfully developed to work together, she reveals her real-life
method for killer radiance, making her iconic complexion accessible to all. “the Fenty Face was created for women of all skin tones, of all personalities,” she says. “these steps are key to starting your makeup, no matter the look you’re going for.” why did you decide to create a make up brand? “Fenty beauty was created for everyone: For women of all shades, personalities, attitudes, cultures, and races. i wanted everyone to feel included. that’s the real reason i made this line.” what’s the story behind the make up? tell us about the process “one of the things that i felt was really important to start with was foundation. Foundation is one of those areas in the beauty industry that has a big void for women at extreme ends of the shade spectrum. there’s this middle ground that's covered really, really well. but then if you're very pale or if you're very dark, there aren’t a lot of options. and so, i wanted to make sure that women of all skin tones were covered so they could be included in what i created.” what you want to achieve from it? “i’m inspired by women all the time. in their different personalities, skin tones, lifestyles, and beliefs. beauty allows us to celebrate and highlight all of our different features. beauty for all, that’s what i believe in, that’s what Fenty beauty is about.” what message do you have for your fans? “the best piece of makeup advice that i can give to any of my fans or any of our customers is to never be afraid to experiment. makeup is there for you to play. it's there for you to have fun with. it should never feel like pressure. it should never feel like a uniform. you should always have a blast, and feel free to take chances, take risks, and, dare to do something new or different.

Joel has performed highly
regarded shows at the edinburgh and melbourne comedy festivals and was awarded the best breakthrough act at the 2017 chortle awards. he has featured as a contestant on a number of panel shows, and as a guest on the likes of britain’s got more talent, drunk history, big brother’s bit on the side, and russell howard’s good news, as well as reaching the final of itV’s i’m a celebrity get me Out of here! in 2016.
Joel dommett is mid-way through his huge national tour. is he knackered? not really. ‘essentially, i’m doing two hours work a day,’ he laughs. ‘it’s a very intensive two hours, but it’s not too bad.’ the 31-year-old comic has been delighting audiences for nearly a decade on the comedy circuit. but after causing quite a stir during his time in the jungle on the latest series of ‘i’m a celebrity… get me out of here!’ – in which he was runner-up – he’s been rocketed into the big league. much of what won dommett votes on the itV reality series shines through in his stand-up; his irresistible charm, perpetual upbeat attitude and nimble quick wit (although those jungle fans also couldn’t get enough of his ripped physique).
JOEL DOMMETT IS COMING TO LIVERPOOL

but it’s live on stage where the gloucestershire-born stand-up is at his best. his shows are grand and ambitious, weaving gripping stories amongst smart observations and goofy set-pieces. no wonder he’s had to add more tour dates… this is the second batch of dates for your live tour. how does it feel to have had to extend it due to popular demand? ‘it’s mad! my agent keeps on cleverly adding dates without asking – which i absolutely don’t mind. it’s now creeping over 100.’ are you enjoying touring? ‘i’m really enjoying it. everyone keeps on saying to me, ‘you must absolutely hate it, you must be really bored of the show...’ no, i think it just gets better and better, and i’m enjoying it more. i’ve taken my best friend steve as my tour manager, we’ve known each other since we were 11, so we’re like two little kids - we’re both very
how are you finding playing huge venues compared to intimate comedy clubs? ‘it’s kind of perfect, actually. my shows, weirdly, have always been quite big, but whereas before they were kind of ironically big in small venues, now they just fit the bigger rooms. there’s a real story arch to the show, a huge crescendo, and a really big epic ending – it’s a really fun, big, stupid show. and that’s what i think is important for the position i’m in; people saw me on a reality show being kind of funny, but i feel i’m in a real position where i have to deliver more. i’m fully aware that this reality tV thing might be a small bubble and that bubble might burst, so i’ve got to do my absolute best to deliver a show which is beyond people’s expectations so they come back to see me again.’ indeed, you’ve gained a whole new fan base since ‘i’m a celebrity...’ are they different from the usual comedy-going crowd? ‘yes, but i was really scared that it would be an absolute nightmare. i thought: it’s going to be lots of screaming young girls and younger people who haven’t seen comedy before. but the demographic at the shows has been so mixed. there are older couples, groups of lads, groups of women, and everyone’s been a delight. it’s such a pleasure to be doing a show where you feel like everyone’s excited to be there. For a lot of people it is their first comedy show, but we’re trying our best to entertain them as well as educate them. it’d be quite easy to do a generic, easy stand-up show and just talk about the jungle. but even though i’m quite commercial in my comedy, i like to think that it’s also slightly weird and not completely straightforward. so hopefully they come away from their first comedy show going, “oh, that’s what stand-up can be.” how much do you have to acknowledge the jungle on stage? do audiences want to hear about it? ‘before the tour i wrote loads of jungle stuff because i thought that’s what they’ll want, i thought they were
going to demand it. but i quickly realised that they just didn’t want to hear it. now, i barely mention it, it’s just part of the story. at the first couple of shows i called carol Vorderman on stage, just because i thought it might be funny. then i realised that, although it was funny, i can’t call carol Vorderman every night, it could start to get a bit grating for her.’ was it a difficult decision to go on ‘i’m a celeb...’ in the first place? ‘it was a real gamble. i thought a lot about the pros and cons. but i felt like i’m quite an optimistic person and if anyone could do it maybe i could – i don’t really get angry or frustrated with other people very easily. the entire time i was in there i was so scared that the comedy community was going to shun me because i’d gone into a massively commercial reality show. but since i’ve got out it’s been so nice, they’ve been so lovely, as well as this new demographic of people. to have both of those teams on my side is the dream, really.’ the australian jungle isn’t the only place you’ve visited recently. You’ve been travelling around the world with nish Kumar meeting some of the strongest and toughest people on the planet for a comedy central series. could your fitness levels keep up with them? ‘they tried to, but no. i did a 32 mile marathon with some mexican guys, i did a 5km relay race in brazil with a 100 kilo log, i did stick fighting in Kenya… basically it was four months of my body being absolutely battered.’ were the bushtucker trials good practice for it? ‘well, all the ridiculous stuff in the jungle did help me. i spent about four months eating ridiculous things and sleeping in uncomfortable places – i’m actually really good at that now.’ i guess it’s a good skill to have. You never know when you might need it. ‘it’s especially a good skill to have now i’m on tour and i have to sleep in holidays inns in stafford. i think: “you know what? i’ve slept in worse…”’

M O N G R E L S the Vampire diaries actor comes to studio 2, Liverpool in october what comes first? the actor or the songwriter? For michael malarkey, the writer came first, then the selftaught musician, rapidly followed by the self-made actor. michael’s journey as a musician started when he began placing guitar parts behind his passion of writing copious amounts of poetry. ‘i was enraptured by the poets and writers of the beat generation and how they used the sound and rhythm of words to create a certain energy of time and place.’ embracing the use of words to build tempo, malarkey’s debut album mongrels is the scribbling's of a restless creative, battling to contain his nomadic spirit within his compositions. malarkey was born in beirut, Lebanon to an irish- american father and a british mother of arab/italian origin and is most famous in the acting circles for his role as the notorious enzo in the hit cw series the Vampire diaries. growing up in yellow springs, ohio, malarkey travelled to London to study at the London academy of music and dramatic art and alongside his acting career he immersed himself in music. ‘i consider it a form of poetic journalism. it’s an endless journey of self-discovery.’ described recently as ‘folk-tronica’ (metro), malarkey’s musical imprint is inspired by a host of different artists and his debut record mongrels is a demonstration of an eclectic musical taste. admitting to enjoying the exploration of the darker side of his nature in an effort to find peace with it, malarkey utilises his discoveries to inspire his songwriting. ‘a lot of what this record is about is that whole struggle of wrestling with those opposing forces within us; the duality of animal and human’ the outcome is songs that are both lyrically deep and melodically potent, ‘the key is to keep the balance’. mongrels doesn’t beat around the 26
bush. the songs don’t jump and down, they don’t wear fancy clothes but lyrically the record plunges you into the depths of a passionate poet with an ear for melody. malarkey’s writes a mixture of introspective country/folk music or driven, ravenous blues songs with lyrics filled with a haunting beauty, yet displaying a warm soul. each song is a new journey into another corridor of his mind, charged with the depth of a man who sees the world in imagery and emotion. recorded and produced by malarkey himself in his current hometown of atlanta, georgia, alongside tom tapley and brandon bush, who provide a definite nashville influence, which is apparent throughout yet doesn’t suffocate the record into the country genre by any means. with so many influences on show, malarkey explains the album concept in more detail: "mongrels represents the manyfaced animal within us that is here but never quite from here; the dreamer within us, stricken with wanderlust, who is tuned to the frequencies of change; the nomad within us whose roots grow not in the ground, but in the wind. it represents the mystery of our vagrant nature, at times a source of weakness and at times a source of power.” “mongrels is an album of the changing of the seasons, both literal and figurative. it is a journey through the dark woods of malarkey’s mind, hashing out the trials and tribulations of relationships, wrestling with the opposing forces within, yet always seeking to find meaning in the impermanence of the journey."

Love Aesthetics' ethos has always been about providing the highest quality clinical, evidence based procedures at a reasonable price. After dedicating the last five years working fully in aesthetics I have found the best way to do this is by having a purpose built clinic at my home to reduce overheads. Due to the ever growing clientele we have now located to a larger home based premises to accommodate our growing needs. We are still based in West Derby and prices remain the same as does flexibility and the highest clinical care.

month with the release of his debut artist album the plug, and to coincide with this milestone he announces the plug uK album tour powered by VK* coming to o2 academy in Liverpool in october. bringing sloth’s trademark beats to 10 uK cities, this incredible live tour in collaboration with student powerhouse VK, will feature a line-up of some of the biggest names in uK rap including yungen, bugzy malone, Fekky, abra cadabra, not3s, K Koke plus some very special surprise guests. the plug is the latest chapter in
30
sloth’s journey through sound that started when he discovered nwa when he was a child, and this upcoming live tour across the uK will embody everything that this pioneering artist represents. he said: “this is the biggest uK rap music has ever been! and i’m gonna bring some of the sickest rap artists to a city near you. if you’re about the culture this is one show u don’t wanna miss”. obviously best known for his work at bbc 1Xtra and Fire in the booth, charlie sloth has been producing for over 10 years for everyone from old school icon rodney p to ‘of course’
on giggs’ most recent album the Landlord. having cemented his reputation as a dJ, sloth feels that it’s the perfect time for him to make the transition to become an artist and producer in his own right. the plug is the first set of original material that sloth has produced, masterminded and co-written, and as a figurehead of the scene, the album naturally features some of his friends and a “who’s who” from the urban community, with bugzy malone, stormzy and giggs standing alongside breaking talent such as aystar, Fredo and Lola rae.

A TA S T E O F H O N E Y this year the british beekeeper’s association (bbKa) will be celebrating the annual national honey week from the 23rd-29th October, recognising the honey bee as our most important pollinator. over the last few years, the health of the uK honey bee population has been a subject of concern. poor weather, loss of habitat, the destruction of colonies by disease, and the uncertainty regarding the impact of pesticides have all affected the honey bee. most recently, there have been concerns over the asian hornet, an invasive species. 32
but why does this matter? perhaps the most important reason is because bees are pollinators that are absolutely vital to our food chain. one third of the food we eat would not be available to us were it not for pollinators, of which honey bees are a key group. in the uK, about 70 crops rely on, or benefit from pollination. national honey week national honey week takes place this october so we’re taking a look at how the fantastic liquid is made. a honey bee will make on average about a twelfth of a
teaspoon of honey in its lifetime; and about a million flowers will have to be visited by the colony to make one pound of honey. bees make honey from nectar; they gather this sweet sticky substance from flowers and mix it with enzymes in their stomachs, storing it in the wax, hexagonal honeycomb. in a good year, honey bees will make far more honey than they need for themselves. beekeepers take any spare honey from the hive and cut off the wax so that the honey can be extracted. good beekeepers always make sure bees have
more than enough honey left in the beehive, as this is their food supply too. due to the different pollen eaten by bees, the taste of honey is often different depending on where it has been collected, and the colour can be different too. For example, if bees are collecting from the flowers of horse chestnut or conker trees, the honey is much darker in colour. creating a buzz in your garden. whatever the size of your garden or window box, everyone can do their bit to help the honey bee: • don’t cut ivy back! it is one of the only food sources for bees in autumn so keeping some intact once it is mature and flowering helps bees stock up before winter. • Leave an area of your garden to grow wild – dandelions and forget-menots can look pretty and provide a great source of nectar for bees.
ten different regions in the uK. it costs £36 to adopt a beehive for one year, and in exchange you receive a welcome box of bee-related goodies and updates throughout the year from
•… eat more local honey and enjoy the taste of food that has travelled ‘bee’ miles not we have one adopt a beehive ‘air’ miles.
your beehive and beekeeper. all the profits from the scheme are ploughed into environmental and education projects to help save the honey bee, so you can help these vital pollinators without getting your hands sticky.
c o m p e t i t i o n
adopt a beehive For people who want to learn more about beekeeping, or to help the honey bee in other ways, the bbKa has its adopt a beehive scheme, where members of the public can adopt a beehive from one of
set to give away, with the winner receiving a year’s subscription. For your chance to win, email editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk with the word honey in the subject box. Full name, address and phone number must be supplied with the answer to the question: ‘what is honey made from?’ editor’s decision is final.

A Love Supreme i was the first dJ in Liverpool to play gigs accompanied by a saxophonist as far back as the mid 1990s. starting out purely as a jazz dJ who converted to the then revolutionary pioneer cdJ500 players in 1994, i quickly realised the creative potential of suddenly being able to manipulate a track’s tempo for beat mixing purposes, without necessarily altering the ‘pitch’ or
38
the original musical key of the track. when every other dJ switched to cd decks about a decade later, sax players soon became a familiar fixture in clubland. they certainly add a wonderful visual aspect to any club night or party, although, it has to be said that not all of them enhance the music. i’ve heard them all over the years, the good and the bad, but none of them comes close to southport’s mike smith. and it’s not just me who thinks so either, for many sax players themselves believe so too, especially those who were taught to play by smith during his ‘day job’ at Lipa. as well as stunning technical and creative virtuosity, smith possesses the all too rare discipline, maturity and awareness needed to make the dJ/sax combination work exactly as it should. he ‘gets’, unlike the vast majority of otherwise excellent players, that it isn’t about showing off a range of technical abilities, as absolutely essential as they are. he fully understands and never forgets that it’s really all about enhancing the moment for the listener and making great
records sound even better. mike’s history as a session player for a host of household names has given him the calm confidence needed to be spontaneously creative in the eye of the hurricane that is the party spotlight. and his spine-tingling performances on sax and keyboards at the epic cream classical concert alongside KKlass and the royal Liverpool philharmonic orchestra at the anglican cathedral earlier this year bears testimony to his musical stature at the very top of the club culture food chain. it is possible to book mike smith and his dJ for your party or wedding by visiting his mikesax.co.uk website or by visiting his mike smith saxophonist page on facebook.

MORE THAN 3,300 HOUSEHOLDS LIVING IN FUEL POVERTY IN LIVERPOOL HAVE BENEFITED FROM A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN ENERGY GIANT SCOTTISH POWER AND MAYOR JOE ANDERSON’S HOPE FUND
Tackling poverty is a priority for the city
“
the scottishpower energy people trust, an independent charity which provides funding to registered charities to help vulnerable and disadvantaged people out of fuel poverty, awarded a £50,000 grant to mayor Joe anderson’s hope Fund last year around 14 per cent of households in the city are living in fuel poverty, which equates to around 30,000 homes – the worst rate in the country. it is estimated poor housing conditions cause up to 500 deaths and 5,000 illnesses requiring medical attention each year. over the last 12 months, trained energy advisors from the city council’s healthy homes team have been working with local families to help them reduce energy costs. this includes switching to cheaper tariffs, checking they are claiming all the benefits they are entitled to and improving energy efficiency. the grant provided by the trust was used to bring in additional

DARREN VISION t a p p i n g

tapping into what? i guess sometimes you just have a feeling that something feels right but your initial plan doesn't quite work out ... of course, the option to give up is always available ... or you can carry on and tap into the experience you've just learned. tap into the feeling that something will come from this. Like percy spencer, an engineer that was fiddling with a radar system in 1945 when he felt a strange sensation in his pants ... a sizzling, even. the bar of chocolate in his pocket had started to melt and with a bit more work he went on to invent the microwave. or richard James ... he was trying to figure out how to use springs to keep the sensitive instruments aboard ships from rocking themselves to death, when he knocked one of his prototypes 50
i t . . .
over. instead of crashing to the floor, it gracefully sprang downward, and then righted itself. so pointless ... but so slinky. he tapped into his experience and sold 300 million sold worldwide. what about wilson greatbatch ... he took the wrong resister from his tool box ... it created a signal that sounded for 1.8 milliseconds ... so what? this only turned out to be a dead ringer for the human heart. without being able to tap into all his knowledge and experience he wouldn't have invented the pacemaker. and just one more ... how about Velcro ... george de mestral was out for a hunting trip with his dog in switzerland and noticed the annoying tendency of burrs to stick to its fur (and his socks). Later, looking under a microscope, he saw the tiny hooks that stuck burrs to fabrics
and furs. he tapped into a belief that there was some sort of use for this ... and after experimenting for years with a variety of textiles he created a new nylon ... and once nasa started using it Velcro became popular around the world. he had tapped into his instinct and stuck with it, literally. what have you yet to tap into? what new skill, new passion or great creativity do you have? how will you ever know without giving it a go. why not tap into what you have, use your skills, experience, knowledge for a new venture. imagine one day looking back and saying "i always new i had it in me, i just had to learn how to tap into it". if you have any questions with reference this article please drop me a line and we can discuss your thoughts and i can answer your questions. email darren@dasala.co.uk or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren

GIN-CREDIBLE BOOZY BAKED FUN BUNS HIT STORES IN LIVERPOOL
roberts’ gin and tonic Fun buns have just hit supermarket shelves in Liverpool – taking a tasty new, modern-day twist on the traditional teacake. these cocktail teacakes boost the trend for boozy baking. the fourpack of Fun buns - which contain a dash of gin and splash of tonic have a lemony zing are delicious toasted and simply spread with butter for a brilliantly botanical bite. they make elevenses more exciting, afternoon tea more appetising and the most standard of snack-times altogether sassier. asda stores in aintree, breck road, sefton park, bootle, hunts cross, huyton and walton are amongst many city stores to stock products from roberts’ 13-strong new range, which has just been launched by the family bakery brand from cheshire. as do morrisons stores in speke, bellvale, maghull and ormskirk. alison ordonez, innovation director at roberts, said: “there’s no denying that we’re a nation of gin connoisseurs with uK sales surpassing £1billion for the first
time ever last year – that’s around 40 million bottles a year and enough to make more than one billion g&ts.” she added that the trend isn't limited to a tipple with tonic or cocktail ingredient: "botanical flavours such as rosemary and juniper feature in both sweet and savoury foods, and they lend themselves perfectly to our Fun bun recipe. “we soak our Fun bun fruit in gin making it juicy and flavoursome for a delicious grown-up bake.” roberts gin and tonic Fun buns are low in fat (1.2g) and only 179kcal per serving. rrp 95p for a pack of four. Further flavours of roberts’ fourpack Fun bun range – which are packed full of more fruit than any other teacakes available - includes zesty marmalade with a sprinkling of fruit and sumptuous sultana and currant, which is made all the more tasty with the perfectly paired flavours and aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg.
other deliciously unexpected treats from roberts include: • ready-to rolls range, including Fiery corn flavour spiked with hot chilli flakes and moroccan corn flavour, crammed with the aromatic and warming spices of cardamom, cumin and turmeric. rrp £1 for a pack of six. • roberts’ paper-wrapped bloomers, are a blooming brilliant, pioneering move into modern artisan bread. the fourstrong range - seriously seeded bloomer, mightily malted, wondrously white and wholly wholemeal - is perfect for dressing up lunch and offers onpack inspiration for the tastiest toppings and most fabulous fillings. rrp £1.19. • roberts’ core range, recognising and respecting the love of its core wrapped loaf, including: thick soft white; mega thick soft white; medium soft white and medium wholemeal. each tastes as good as it always has but now comes in fabulously fun new packaging. From its bakeries in cheshire and derbyshire, roberts serves major supermarkets and local convenience stores across the uK, employs 900 people and is still run by the fourth generation of the roberts family. it is currently celebrating 130 years of baking history and knowhow. for further information visit http://robertsbakery.co.uk, follow us on twitter, facebook and instagram @robertsbakeryuK.

it’s a busy time of year and it’s so exciting! where do i begin in the long list of things to look forward to? Liverpool Fashion week kicks off the month in style. as always our fabulous city leads the way in the style stakes. designers are flying in from Los angeles to take part, which just goes to show how reputable the event is. expect lots of photos across social media and in print shortly. while we’re talking about fashion october brings the new season of winter wear to the high street. i won’t miss the tatty rails of summer leftovers at the back of the stores. if you’re looking for something different then splash out on a onesie or a handbag from the british Legion, details inside. it’s a way to stay stylish and say thank you to our armed forces. october is such a nice time of the year; the streets look so pretty as they’re laced with colourful leaves. my house is littered with scented candles and the logs that have been drying out all summer are lit on the fire. hearty soups go on the boil and the halloween decorations go up; a collection of almost 22 years that include film props and american imports. Like i said, it’s a fun time of the year. this month i also fulfil a bucket list item by going on a weekend break to berlin, something i have wanted to do since i was studying german gcse over 25 years ago (gulp). it was a new year’s resolution, or rather a promise to my kids that we would go on a european city break every year. next year they’ve chosen italy. i am thankful to the universe for providing us with the opportunity to travel. as always Lifestyle magazine will carry you through the month wherever you plan to be. enjoy every moment and don’t forget to put the clocks back an hour on the last sunday of the month. stay stylish
