T

he Atkinson has pulled out all the stops to bring some Pantomime magic to Southport this Christmas with the family classic Cinderella. Headlining this year’s show is TV presenter, actress and incredible singer, Claire Sweeney, who will be playing fan favourite, The Fairy Godmother. Originally from Liverpool, Claire has graced our TV screens for many years and is renowned for her fabulous theatre/musical productions nationwide such as ‘Chicago’ and ‘Guys & Dolls’, playing opposite Patrick Swayze. She has most recently been seen on stage starring in productions such as ‘Crazy For You’, ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ and ‘Hairspray’. Prior to this she toured with the sell-out show; ‘Sex in Suburbia’, which she also co-wrote. Claire

radio shows on both Magic and BBC Radio Merseyside. Claire Sweeney said, ‘ I started off at the Southport Youth Theatre when I was 14 and my day's out every Sunday were to Southport to the Bold Hotel for a roast dinner, so Southport holds a really special place in my heart. I won my first talent contest at this very theatre when I was 14, pretending to be 16, so it's a very sentimental place for me so to be coming back to do pantomime is absolutely lovely ‘. The pantomime will be produced by LHK Productions, who have for over 15 years’ experience creating outstanding shows and musical productions worldwide. Producer Lee Kelly said ‘ We are really looking forward to returning to the fabulous Atkinson Theatre, following the

overwhelming success of our Christmas pantomime last year. You can expect a fun and heart-warming show with a modern twist, full of dancing, singing and some enchanting surprises - the perfect Christmas family show.’ Joining Claire Sweeney on stage at The Atkinson will be Michael Chapman (Liverpool’s favourite Dame), Lewis Pryor (Britain’s Got Talent 2016), Southport’s Tom Burroughs and Holli Jo Bradley (choreographer). The full cast list will be announced over the next few weeks! Tickets for Cinderella are on sale now at www. theatkinson.co.uk. The show has already generated much interest so be quick to book your tickets before they disappear.

LAW

Lifestyle caught up with award winning solicitor Bernadette McDonald, of BMD:Law to discuss her exciting new projects for the new year. Tell us about your new legal school? We’ve

opened the Liverpool School of Legal Education because the whole way we train solicitors has changed. The law degree and LPC has gone, so paralegals can now qualify and there’s a Solicitor’s Qualification exam so it’s more hands on with two years of experience as opposed to seven years of qualifications. This has given us a bit more of an opportunity to be innovative. We’re opened the school, we’ve trial runner it with the courts to see what works and what doesn’t, so we’ll be taking people from school leaving age and turning them into paralegals with 12 week courses, we’re supporting people who are already 10

working as paralegals in law firms going for a SQA contract because they won’t be given any training, it’s just for them to acquire experience. Acquiring experience is easy but recognising what you’re learning from a formal point of view and document it, that is different, so we’ll be offering courses to support that. We have a mixture of online and in person courses based at our premises here and of course using the law firm here as a way of getting practical experience so it blends the both. And to ensure I have enough work to give them I am very excited too do something that I’ve waited to do for years which is pro bono business clinics for small

businesses who don’t want to waste their money on law firms in the beginning because they need all their resources. So we’ll be using the students to give them advice, supervised of course, for all new businesses. This means a lot as I want to give back to the business community. I am taking the bets of law and best of business to combine it to improve the future of legal professions. We’re starting properly in Easter, start marketing after Christmas and launch some of online courses in january, SQA school will be in September but the paralegal courses will be across the summer. This is available national but they

will have to attend here in Liverpool I’ve invested quite heavily in the tech, so it’s not just lectures, there’s a lot of videos and handouts and interactive learning, quizzes, to mix it up to keep people engaged. I wrote all the courses, spending the last few months taking the design of business philosophy how we design law firms itself and integrate them into a very legal way of thinking. So I have taken a lot of different concepts and places and put them all together for a very bespoke course.

of what people need, so if you go too tech older people can’t access it so it’s taking what the client needs and embedding it to training in what they need. It’s hard to explain but it is like switching someone’s head and opening their eyes. It’s a very different, forward way of thinking.

And alongside this you’re doing a PHD?

Yes, it is in User Reflective Practice in a legal profession and how we design that as a course for law students. I’m also tying it into a book on Reflective Practice for Lawyers which will be published soon as well.

www.bmd-law.uk

So what is a legal way of thinking? Traditionally it’s quite intricate and informative and formal. We do things stepped so that works well with the courses and user interface. The problem with traditional law is that it's the same, always been the same where clients come into the office and sit in a meeting room but that doesn’t work in the modern world. But there’s a spectrum

RECIPE

CLASSIC MULLED WINE home! If so, you’re just fifteen minutes away from mulled wine. Let’s make some. INGREDIENTS • 2 small oranges or 1 large • 1 bottle of affordable Merlot, Zinfandel or Garnacha (also called Grenache) • ¼ cup brandy

L

et’s cozy up with some mulled wine. Turn on some music, build a fire or light some candles, throw some spices and wine in a pot, and embrace the holiday season. It’s really that simple. I’ve always associated mulled wine with holiday parties, but a single batch is perfect for two to four people. Mulled wine is unbelievably easy to make, even on a weeknight, and fills your home with holiday fragrance. This mulled wine is for wine lovers. I’ve encountered a few mulled wines over the years that tasted like sweet potpourri, but not this recipe. It’s fruity and spiced, but the wine still shines through. You just might even have all of the ingredients at

12

• 1 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey, to taste • 2 whole cinnamon sticks • 3 star anise • 4 whole cloves • Optional garnishes: Fresh whole cranberries (about ¼ cup), cinnamon sticks, additional orange rounds or half moons. INSTRUCTIONS To prepare the oranges, if using 2 small, slice one orange into rounds and slice the other in half. If using 1 large orange, slice it in half through the round middle, then slice one of the halves into rounds. Place the rounds into a medium heavy-bottomed pot or small Dutch oven. Squeeze the juice from the remaining oranges into the pot.

Pour the wine into the pot, followed by the brandy. Add 1 tablespoon of the sweetener for now. Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise and cloves. Warm the mixture over medium heat until steaming (about 5 minutes), and keep an eye on it. When you start seeing the tiniest of bubbles at the surface, reduce the heat to the lowest of low. Carefully taste, and add another tablespoon of sweetener if it’s not sweet enough for your liking. If it’s not spicy enough to suit your preferences, continue cooking over very low heat for 5 to 10 more minutes. Serve in mugs with your desired garnishes! If you’re adding cranberries as I did, you can add them to the pot to make it look extra festive. If you expect to polish off the mulled wine within 20 minutes or so, you can keep it on the stove over extra-low heat (it will become more spicy with time). Otherwise, remove it from the heat, cover, and rewarm over low heat if necessary. Leftovers will keep in the refrigerator for a couple of days, covered (pour it through a strainer if you don’t want it to become any more spicy than it already is).

DATING

The Matchmaker tips for Christmas - Lara Besbrode

T

he season for happiness, cheer and sparkling lights is upon us. And if you’re single this time of year, or recently started dating someone new, you might be wondering how to navigate dating during the festive season, including what to expect. For starters, it’s good to know that the festive period is one of the busiest for dating and finding love online. Many singles will turn to dating apps for a quick fling. But the key is to date with a relaxed, cautiously optimistic attitude. After all, your goal is to set a strong and healthy foundation for your relationship.

14

Dating during the holiday season should leave you feeling confident and comfortable in your

14

own decision. As opposed to diving into deep, intimate gatherings with friends and family with your new date, try planning one-onone romantic days or evenings together. If you’ve been on 1-2 dates, consider iceskating (hand-in-hand, under the spectacle of festive lights!), visit a Christmas market together, or sing your hearts out to a festive karaoke playlist. And if you’ve been dating for more than a couple of months, consider planning a short weekend cabin getaway or hit the ski slopes! Keep it light, fun and festive. Remember that dating online during the festive season can be a little tricky. For one, prepare to factor in an additional layer of complexity as the festive season

falls within cuffing season, a time when many singles will embark on a romantic search for a partner to pass the colder months (which starts in October and ends just after Valentine’s Day). While some say this phenomenon is driven by desperation and loneliness, it’s also important to look at the brighter side of the equation! Human nature is wired to prefer companionship, love and warmth! Visit thematchmaker. uk, we match people all over the world so book in a free discovery call today.

HOLISTIC HEALTH

Lifestyle magazine chats to Tracy McMahon owner of Buddha Therapies Tell me how Buddha Therapies was born?

After 10 years in the retail industry, I was on holiday with my family and friends, and went the Hilton 7 Spa in Portugal, I fell deeply in love with the atmosphere and realized how important well-being is, it sparked a passion inside of me, I told my friend I was gong to college when I returned home from holiday, and was going to start a Holistic course, and open up my own business called Buddha Therapies – this opened up a huge door for me personally, there was lots of changes and sacrifices, but - I DID IT !!!

Have you always been into holistic health?

16

From an early age I have always felt driven to “help yourself”, I was always very independent and always tried push forward even if I was hurt, physically or emotionally, even when I felt abandoned, alone, or even “not fitting in” to school life, resilience can help you find yourself. As a child

I used to dream I could fly, and I just remember it was so easy, and that twirling my hand around an injury, on friends, or myself could “heal” it, not realising it was just energy. As you grow you can loose your way, either by moving away from your path, because of lack of confidence, around the wrong people or just “stuck in a rut”, or simply firstly learning lessons, which is not a bad thing.

You’re always learning new skills, why? If you

think you know everything, you know nothing, were here to learn and love

And how was the academy developed?

Buddha Therapies Academy was created in 2017 to help deliver Alternative, Holistic, Complementary, and Traditional Eastern Asian Therapy courses. Our academy won “Best training provider 2019 in Liverpool and has been nominated for “Best Training Provider in November 2021” by Liverpool Lifestyle.

We deliver our courses to students all over the UK and Ireland, from Newcastle, Essex, Manchester, Liverpool, and Belfast. Our courses are also delivered in Carlisle by Holistic Beauty Academy, in South Liverpool by Love & Light Therapies, and in Warrington by Juniper Clinic, and for 2022 will be delivered in Ireland.

Why do you think you’re so successful?

I have just simply tried to always focus on service, my leadership at Buddha Therapies and Buddha Therapies Academy is completely based on its service. To provide health, well-being and compassion to the clients, students, staff and to myself. This comes in so many ways. I study, research, and learn to help them give the best they can give and to help empower them through compassionate service, to

take control of their own health and to awaken the healing power inside them. Integrating the best of modern medical science and ancient eastern healing methods, we promote well-being on an emotional, spiritual, and physical level. My personal integrity is my passion, an affinity with people, nurturing them to recovery and growth often when they are mentally and physically depleted and my personal resilience, I try to teach to others, is your emotional and spiritual strength which enables you to enjoy life, survive pain, disappointment, and sadness. We, the practitioner absorbs other people’s pain and hurt and are still able to carry on every day while keeping ourselves ok. I deeply believe that the message and importance of holistic therapies as preventative medicine should be taught to everybody.

What keeps your passion alive? watching

people grow, spiritually, emotionally, physically, whether it is clients, family, friends, students or staff, I believe working for a unique stronger person in yourself, especially after any trauma is the best growth you will ever achieve or inherit, your unique and your health is your wealth.

Did you always aspire to be the market leader that you are?

I never thought of it that way, I just always knew that wellbeing is the first thing you should think of, from the second you wake up, to when you fall asleep, I just started from learning about the body and mind connection, then learnt that the body, mind and spirit are the most important things we have to nurture in order to help prevent it from getting sick,

watching clients get better inspired me to create more job opportunities and put more therapists on training, then this inspired me to teach the therapies myself so we have a wide variety of practitioners and therapist delivering therapies, this then inspired me to push nutrition, plant based supplements, teas, skin/ face products with less chemicals, to prolong good health, a complete holistic approach and wellbeing.

BEAUTY

Meet Lifestyle’s new beauty columnist Emma Lampkin Hello readers! I am your new beauty columnist Emma, and one thing you should know about me is that I absolutely love to preach about our own personal selfcare, especially around stressful times, and this year is no exception; we are only weeks away from Christmas! Hands-up those already a little stressed as we all know usually with Christmas comes chaos. The build-up tends to be a blur of buying gifts, party prepping, hosting and thinking about cooking that turkey and all the trimming right, the worrying is understandably difficult and it is hard to make time for yourself – but it’s important that you do. Self-care is something many of us neglect; we

forget that we need a bit of selflove and care, and just by taking some time to give yourself a proper pamper over the holidays you’ll be setting yourself up for a more successful start to the new year. Happiness is not expensive, and that’s the thing to remember. Yes, we all love to be complimented it makes us feel real good inside and gives us an instant confidence boost, but without our own self-love and worth that feeling is only temporary. Without love for yourself, you will remain in a constant battle against yourself. And this is why I preach about doing something for YOU, as I know when I do a little self-care, it lifts my mood and does make me feel happier and damn I look better for it!

It’s not all about big gestures, even, just a lovely nice relaxing hot bath with lots of bubbles, maybe a glass of champers, or a trip to your local salon for a treat. We always go above and beyond for our loved ones at Christmas and forget about ourselves, so this time give yourself a thought along the way and you never know, you may just enjoy yourself! Until next month, when we talk about new year resolutions, how to get off the extra pounds we have put on over the holidays, and what’s in store for 2022, have a great Christmas & New Year!

Emma xoxo

LIFESTYLE

Life Coach, Grace McMahon, explains how we can remain positive in winter Why do we feel so blue in the autumn? The summer months are more likely to be spent being social – spending time outdoors or on holiday - often bringing greater instances for deepening existing relationships or forging new ones. Then all of a sudden, the cooler months have arrived and the sense of excitement, activity-filled days and the greater points for connection are gone. A feeling of loss creeps into the void. This feeling of loss might also trigger older feelings of loss; times when we felt lonely or aimless. What can we do? Connect with people, and not on social media. Given the sociability of summertime, we can often feel a little lonely as we spend more time indoors sheltering from the rain and cold. Whilst it’s unlikely you can fit in quite as much socialising time as when the days are longer (and more days of annual leave), you can still prioritise social sessions in your daily life. Turn your

24

evening walk into a chance to catch up with a friend, plan dinners, FaceTime and set up midweek moments for friendships. Stay Open to New Experiences We can feel more open in the warmer months, and it can be a little stifling coming back to cooler ones. Mindsets shift a little and we can err to the edge of hibernation during this time. But cooler months shouldn’t have to mean putting that experimental mindset back into a box. You may benefit from keeping an open outlook as the nights draw in, by trying new recipes, joining a local group or even something as simple

as a new route to work (or method of getting there roller-skates anyone?). It’s not just the change of scenery that makes summertime so fun, often it’s the changes in ourselves that make us feel so good. Reflect Whilst the summer is often filled with holidays and minibreaks, time away from our day-to-day can give us a muchneeded break from the everyday humdrum. They can also cast a stark light on what we’d like to change about our lives and mean we may have to confront some uncomfortable truths. If work is really making you so miserable, perhaps it’s time to look for a new job? Was it a relief to spend time away from a demanding friend or partner? Then perhaps a conversation with them is in order. Time away from our dayto-day can offer us a fresh perspective on what it was we felt we needed a ‘break’ from in the first place and help us see more clearly the changes we need to make.

I

t is the festive season and not long now until the big man arrives on Christmas day! The Liverpool Lifestyle Awards with Love Shakes n Cakes was a huge glamour hit in the city Everyone looked superb in black tie and cocktail dresses. I absolutely loved my dress from Crème de la crème in Liverpool. Amanda Moss outdid herself again providing an astonishing night to celebrate Liverpool businesses. From start to finish there was entertainment, live singers, a fashion show and flowing food and drink. Congratulations to everyone who was nominated and won an award. Looking forward to the 08/10/2022 13th Anniversary of the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards. I was honoured to be asked to host The Vacient

Cosmetic Christmas Shopping event at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel. If you get a chance, you must pay the hotel a visit. During the event I found out that I will be flying to Dubai next year with Vacient and celebrity MUA Carla Lawson as part of their bill board international campaign and I will be one of the faces you will see on the UK and International billboards! OMG, how extremely lucky to be asked and experience a Middle East photo shoot. Liverpool Christmas Market is well underway on William Brown Street until 23rd December. MEDIA

LIVERPOOL LIFE PRESENTER AND AUDIO VISUAL COMPANY OWNER, ROY BASNETT CHATS TO LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE How did you get into media? During the late

1990’s I was working as a Club/Bar DJ when I heard that Lancashire based radio station Rock FM were looking for someone to front up their roadshows. I auditioned for the role and got the job. Whilst there, Programme Director Paul Jordan suggested I put together a demo and try out for an on-air role. My first show was 2 -6am commonly referred to as the “Graveyard Shift” on Red Rose Gold. I did several other shifts, but my real break came when I got to present the “Phone In”. I immediately loved the format of talk radio and this (with a few exceptions) has been my focus ever since.

What do you love about presenting on the radio? Undoubtedly

the guests. I have interviewed more than 7000 people during my career, from all walks of life, including Henry

Winkler, Christoph Waltz, David Hasslehoff and Roger Moore. Interviewing celebrities is great, but some of my best conversations have been with everyday people who have done some amazing things.

Is radio more competitive than it used to be with all the digital channels and podcasts? I would

expert Les Stewart alongside Claudine & Kerry with all the showbusiness gossip. I also get to speak with some fascinating people like Rusty Firmin. Rusty led the SAS assault which ended the Iranian Embassy siege of 1981.

What other interests do you have? I also have

say it has become more competitive. Opportunities within the radio industry are diminishing as more stations choose to network their output. Also, the rise in the popularity of podcasting has made creating engaging content is more important than ever.

an event management company based in Widnes. We recently had the pleasure of facilitating the 2021 Lifestyle Awards and Liverpool Fashion Week for Amanda Moss PR. I am also Matchday Host for the Widnes Vikings.

Tell us about your show on Liverpool Live?

What are your plans for Christmas? Family stuff

I present the mid-morning show which is a mixture of music and chat. We have some great contributors such as local historian Chris Cannon and education

is always important to me, which I spend with my wife Jane and daughter Laura. I also host a lot of Christmas parties throughout the festive season.

New columnist to Lifestyle

H

ave you been giving yourself a breakdown trying to decide what you ‘really’ wanna be in life? You know that ‘one thing’ society tries to make us believe we need to choose to become, and then do, until we retire. Or maybe, you’re in a job but you can’t stand it? When actually the truth is… You know, there’s loads of things you want to do. You’re passionate about all kinds of stuff and you’ve got tons of ideas. You’ve got shit loads of skills in many different areas and you know you’re good at them too. But that’s the problem. There’s just ‘too many’ things to choose from. It’s impossible and you’re stuck. Well, you’re not stuck. So you can RELAX and just chill for a sec… :) Right… Just in case you’ve been worrying yourself silly Because I know I did.

• You’re NOT weird • And you’re NOT broken So, you can stop torturing yourself now. There’s no rule saying we have to choose to be one thing. What you want to be when you leave school may very well not be the thing you want to be in your 30s or 40s. And that’s fine. I didn’t choose to be one thing. At least not after I found out I was a “multi-passionate entrepreneur.” Yep. There’s loads of us… And you know what? It’s brilliant. You get to be whatever you want without feeling guilty. You can be two, three, or ten different things, if that’s what you want. And… You can make serious money doing it. Being a multi-passionate (a term coined my Marie Forleo), is a strength. It’s an ASSET. Not a weakness.

Yeah, we’re unconventional because we don’t fit neatly into a box. But who wants to? We’re also very creative, talented, multi-skilled, courageous and resilient. So start showing up as a proud multi-passionate. Just relax and start experimenting with different ideas. Don’t try to ‘think’ your way to your purpose. Your truth is in your heart. So you just need to enjoy trying a few things on for size. You can’t get it wrong so don’t stress on it. Listen to your gut. Because your heart will let you know when you’ve found the right thing for you. Well… for now.

AYS CHRISTMAS GETAW

5 Christmas destinations you should visit this year from Liverpool John Lennon Airport 4. Sibiu, Romania Sibiu may not be the most well-known Chrismas market destination, but it shouldn’t be missed.

1. Tallinn, Estonia Tallinn's medieval old town is home to enchanting architecture that looks as though it's been plucked from a fairy tale, and this is also where you'll find its Christmas markets. Overlooked by Tallinn symbol Vana Toomas, Town Hall Square is host to the markets, offering a selection of stalls selling food, drink and trinkets, whilst several performances take place throughout the week on the adjacent stage.

2. Wroclaw, Poland Poland is the home of many first-class destinations, but there are perhaps none better

at Christmas time than Wroclaw. The city’s colourful Market Square is illuminated by a giant purple tree, in addition to having a plethora of other impressive decorations.

3. Vienna, Austria If you’re looking to go down the more traditional route this festive season, then look no further than Vienna. The Austrian capital has events and activity spread all across the city, but its Winter Wonderland, in front of City Hall, is the headline attraction.

Fly to the heart of Transylvania and discover market stalls, an ice rink and a giant spruce tree spreading the holiday spirit.

5. Budapest, Hungary Just down the Danube from Vienna is another capital renowned for its Christmas market offering Budapest. Enjoy mulled wine under the sparkling Christmas lights, and browse locallymade gifts at one of several markets across the city.

AUTHOR

Lifestyle chats to author Sue Kythreotou What is your background? I was born and raised in beautiful South Africa where my love for nature was cultivated. I moved to Cyprus after my studies and have been working with children, as a teacher and counsellor, for many years. Since I also have a specialisation in theatre in education, I was involved in directing the theatrical shows at the schools I have worked at. In recent years, I made a decision to work part time in order to fulfill my dreams, and one of those is to write children's literature. I currently live in Cyprus with my husband and two children. When did you come up with the idea of the book? My son, Lucas, often experienced nightmares as a child due to an overactive imagination so I was inspired to write 'Lucas and the Tree.' I wrote the first draft about 20 years ago, put it in a drawer and forgot about it until I finally had the chance to edit and publish it. How long did it take you to write? I can't

remember how long the first draft took but it was quite quick. When I started working on it the second time round, I put more thought into it and it took a few hours to edit. It was easy to write because I had lived through the experience and so it poured out of me and onto the paper. What is the outline of the story? The story is about a little boy, Lucas who loves to play under the shade of

the mulberry tree where he listens to the birds and often just lies there and daydreams. One night as he's about to fall asleep he suddenly hears a strange noise and he begins to imagine what it might be. He calls out to his mum who comes to his rescue and with her support, love and patience, together they try to discover what the strange noise is. Mum teaches Lucas to be courageous and

soon they are both pleasantly surprised when they finally find out what it is. What age is it suitable for? The story is for children from 4 up to and including 8 year olds. The story may also be used by educators of the senior primary school to discuss the use of figures of speech in writing or for a PSHE lesson to discuss the emotion of fear. Who was the book published with? Lucas and the Tree is a Bookworm publication and can be purchased at bookstores in Cyprus as well as directly from me. It is also available at: Crazy Cow Gifts, which is an online store. Amazon as an ebook https://www.amazon. co.uk/dp/B08RS99HNM Not So Big Fish as an animated interactive ebook. https://notsofishy. shop/collections/childrensinteractive-ebooks/lucas How easy is it to publish? Since I didn't know much about publishing it was difficult. It was a learning journey where I needed to do research and I asked a lot of questions. I tried submitting my book abroad and it

was accepted but since I wanted to be part of the whole publishing journey,(hands on) I made a decision to do it locally. What helped the most is when I went to a bookstore and found books by Cypriot authors, looked to see who the publishers were, and then chose one that seemed to be the most appropriate. Thankfully my submission was accepted and the book was finally published. It took time and effort but I finally got there. What are you most proud of? Firstly, my family-my children and husband and then of course the fact that I was able to publish 'Lucas and the Tree.'

Will there be a follow up? I'm hoping to publish another book in the near future which is not a follow up but a completely different story. How disciplined do you need to be to write? I believe that when one writes about real experiences it is easier than just making one up. One needs to be inspired to write and usually this inspiration comes from our experiences. It takes time, effort and creativity to edit a story and to make it appealing to the reader. If you want to get the job done then you have to be disciplined and consistent.
