HELLO NOVEMBER

I

t may be dark but it certainly isn’t gloomy in the world of Lifestyle magazine, we’re super excited for the sold out Liverpool Lifestyle Awards in association with Love Shakes and Cakes. And also Liverpool Fashion Week. What a month of celebrations it is, we finally get to dress up and sparkle in style as only Liverpool knows how. The North West is buzzing with excitement with so many events, including Liverpool Sound City the Nest in Chester. And of course the theatres are getting ready to draw back the curtains for their pantos. Oh yes, they are!

Whatever you’re up to this month stay positive and don’t watch the news as it will drown you in fear and negativity. Instead of imagining an apocalypse, how about imagining heaven on earth? It’s amazing how a mindset can effect your day and the success of your business and personal lives. I’m taking a group of people to Cyprus on a mindful and positive healing retreat this month. Lots of affirmations for reaching your goals and believing in yourself, I can’t wait to share the pictures with you. May I also take this opportunity to wish my beautiful daughter a

happy 16th and my wonderful son a happy 18th birthday as well this month. Life is for living and hopefully they will enjoy a fabulous lifestyle along with you all. Until next month, stay stylish,

SMALL BUSINESS Lifestyle meets Raj Sharma owner of Love Shakes and Cakes who swapped the chemistry lab for the kitchen N Cakes What is your background? I studied Applied Chemistry, after working approx 10 years in the Chemical waste industry, I was looking for a new challenge, an opportunity came up on the Albert Dock to run a French Creperie. It took me a while to consider the change, but as I love learning and taking on new challenges I took on the opportunity and made a success out of it. After this Love Shakes N Cakes, was the kind of business that I wanted to do and run. This has truly made me feel that a change in career was not a wrong move.

Milkshakes, desserts and deli food. From chocolate shakes, to waffles, sundaes to brownies, wraps to hot dogs. We have it all. There is something for everyone in our family business we have so much to offer that we just keep adding on to our menu from time to time. We love our customers and always serve with a smile.

Tell us about your business? Love Shakes N Cakes is a family run company with my mum, wife and three children who love helping out like my little elf’s alongside my staff who I always treat like my family.

Is there a science to baking? Yes there is, like anything the important to success is in the making. So making sure the method is right in terms of measurement, pouring, Mixing and timing is very important. This is what we love doing at Love Shakes N Cakes hence why the product is so tasty that customers keep on coming back to us.

We offer three different areas at Love Shakes

What is so special about your cakes? We pick

and choose different kinds of cakes in our shop, Cakes that are very rare to get in most other places such as our rainbow cake and red velvet cake, these are two our customers can not get enough off them. What is your favourite dessert? I would have to choose the Biscoff Waffle. There is something about the combination of crushed biscoff and white chocolate sauce covered all over a waffle. It’s my favourite on my cheat day. Is there a story behind your name? We could have called it just Shakes N Cakes, but because there is so much Love for the place. Love the family and staff members, Love for our customers coming back again and again,

Love for the Area that we are based, Love for how we make our product. Hence why we added the Love to the name. It just automatically brings a smile to your face LOVE SHAKES N CAKES. Are you looking forward to Christmas? Christmas comes around to fast nowadays, but we are always in the mood for a festive season, we are preparing a lot of old school style sweet jars, which our customers love putting into there children stocking, as well as making selected cake boxes for our customers to enjoy the festive season with there favourite cakes. What are you looking forward to about the Lifestyle Awards? Wow the name itself sounds so beautiful, so being a part of it is an honour in itself, I’m looking forward to bringing my cakes over for people to try, also meeting a lot of new people in the wonderful city of Liverpool. Oh yes not forgetting the after party, haha. Please check us out on our Instagram and Facebook page @LoveShakesNCakes. You will be amazed.

DATING

Lifestyle welcomes new columnist, international matchmaker Lara Besbrode

T

his winter, there’s no reason to be single. With lockdowns out of the way, there’s plenty of opportunity for you to get out there and meet someone. If it’s been a while since you headed out on your first date, or if you simply need a quick refresher, The Matchmaker UK has lined up the best tips on preparing for a first autumn or winter date. Whether you choose to go for an outdoor walk or bundle up by a fire, here are our best winter dating tips:

If you want to make a strong first impression, give some thought to the impression you want to leave your date with, whether it’s a stylish outfit or fresh-from-thesalon hair. Whatever you choose, make sure you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin! Impressions are more than just about looks, however. In the name of good dating etiquette, make sure you show up on time, be courteous and respectful.

1.Keep it simple: The first date is your opportunity to learn something about each other. To have an engaging conversation, be curious and ask questions, but make sure you take the time to listen, too. Get to know your date by keeping the conversation on them. What are their passions? Who inspires them most? You’ll never know unless you ask.

3. Be honest and patient with yourself (and your date!): If you had a stimulating conversation and can’t wait for the next date, share your feelings while you’re still there. But if the sparks didn’t fly the first time around, take some time to think about what you liked and didn’t like. Whatever you do, don’t leave your date hanging. Remember, it takes time to get to know someone and sometimes, it takes a little longer than the first date to feel the chemistry.

2. Make a strong first impression: It’s hard to look bad in a comfortable, black jumper or cardigan. 10

It’s time to get out there and start dating! Don’t have a date? Don’t despair. Tap into the matchmaking magic of Lara Besbrode and her professional team of dating experts at The Matchmaker UK. With the help of an accredited matchmaker and internationally-certified professional, Lara is passionate about creating unique introductions. Using a 30-point matching system, The Matchmaker UK’s discreet, premium and confidential approach makes the stars align - so you can meet your match sooner! RECIPE FRENCH ONION SAUSAGE CASSEROLE SERVES 4 | HANDS-ON TIME 10 MIN, SIMMERING TIME 35 MIN METHOD Cut the bacon rashers in half, stretch each piece by running the back of a kitchen knife blade along it, then wrap one around each chipolata. Heat the oil in a medium hob-safe casserole, add the pigs in blankets and brown over a medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes. Set aside. Add a splash more oil if needed, along with the butter, then add the onions and a plenty of salt and black pepper. Fry gently for 5-6 minutes until

starting to soften. Stir in the garlic, then cover and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the onions have softened and turned deep brown. Stir the flour into the onions, then cook for 1-2 minutes. Add the sherry, stock pot and 500ml hot water from a just-boiled kettle. Stir to combine, then add the browned pigs in blankets and the thyme. Simmer on a low-medium heat for 20 minutes until rich, thick and saucy.

INGREDIENTS

6 rashers streaky bacon

375g pack British pork chipolatas

Vegetable oil for frying

25g butter

500g onions, sliced

2 garlic cloves, sliced

1 tbsp plain flour

100ml medium dry or dry sherry, plus an extra splash

1 beef stock pot

3-4 fresh thyme, plus extra leaves to garnish

8 large thin slices of fresh baguette

4 tsp wholegrain mustard

125g gruyère or strong cheddar, grated

Splash sherry vinegar

Meanwhile, heat the grill to high. Toast the baguette slices on each side. Spread with the mustard, then scatter with the grated cheese. Cook under the hot grill for 3-4 minutes or until the cheese has melted and is bubbling and golden. Stir a splash more sherry and the sherry vinegar into the casserole, season to taste, then serve with the cheese toasts, extra thyme leaves and some greens, if you like. 12

INSPIRATION Who is Brian Phillips? He is Mr Old

Hall Street, he is the ex homeless man who turned his life around and became a much loved member and inspirational of the Liverpool community, dedicating his life to helping the homeless. “I am 58 years old, I was on drugs for 35 years and lost my job and my house. I got beaten up one night and ended up homeless in town. I fell asleep in a doorway on Old Hall Street and I woke up to a beautiful lady with a breakfast in her hand. I didn't know it at the time but this was the beginning of me changing my life. I was getting lots of money in my doorway but after a few weeks I couldn't do it to these people, I felt I was cheating them as they wanted to help and I wasn’t helping myself. I stopped taking drugs and saw how much less friends I had. 20

The Liverpool Echo did a story on me called me, The Happiest Homeless Man in Liverpool” and people came from all over the city

to see me! I did a radio interview and pictures of me were all over Wales. I was getting so many donations, I shared it with my brothers and sisters on the streets. Anyway, when the winter came, it was so cold I would of

probably have died had not Lawrence Kenwright from the Shankly Hotel open Kingsway House, a homeless shelter. I went there and became friends with Lawrence. He bought me some carts and Mr Old Hall Street's Kitchen was born. We help people, my brothers and sisters on the streets. We also help families. Now I am about to make Mr Old Hall Streets Kitchen a registered company. I can’t believe it! I have a team of beautiful people and all we want to do is help my brothers and sisters on the streets. I hope they look at me and think, if he can do it so can I"

LIFESTYLE

Life Coach, Grace McMahon, explains how we can remain positive in winter Why do we feel so blue in the autumn? The summer months are more likely to be spent being social – spending time outdoors or on holiday - often bringing greater instances for deepening existing relationships or forging new ones. Then all of a sudden, the cooler months have arrived and the sense of excitement, activity-filled days and the greater points for connection are gone. A feeling of loss creeps into the void. This feeling of loss might also trigger older feelings of loss; times when we felt lonely or aimless. What can we do? Connect with people, and not on social media. Given the sociability of summertime, we can often feel a little lonely as we spend more time indoors sheltering from the rain and cold. Whilst it’s unlikely you can fit in quite as much socialising time as when the days are longer (and more days of annual leave), you can still prioritise social sessions in your daily life. Turn your

24

evening walk into a chance to catch up with a friend, plan dinners, FaceTime and set up midweek moments for friendships. Stay Open to New Experiences We can feel more open in the warmer months, and it can be a little stifling coming back to cooler ones. Mindsets shift a little and we can err to the edge of hibernation during this time. But cooler months shouldn’t have to mean putting that experimental mindset back into a box. You may benefit from keeping an open outlook as the nights draw in, by trying new recipes, joining a local group or even something as simple

as a new route to work (or method of getting there roller-skates anyone?). It’s not just the change of scenery that makes summertime so fun, often it’s the changes in ourselves that make us feel so good. Reflect Whilst the summer is often filled with holidays and minibreaks, time away from our day-to-day can give us a muchneeded break from the everyday humdrum. They can also cast a stark light on what we’d like to change about our lives and mean we may have to confront some uncomfortable truths. If work is really making you so miserable, perhaps it’s time to look for a new job? Was it a relief to spend time away from a demanding friend or partner? Then perhaps a conversation with them is in order. Time away from our dayto-day can offer us a fresh perspective on what it was we felt we needed a ‘break’ from in the first place and help us see more clearly the changes we need to make.

BEAUTY

Meet Liana Frappola, owner of Northern lashes

I

set up Northern Lashes in 2019 after researching the beauty industry to see just how much plastic is wasted. Annually 120billion units of plastic is used in the beauty industry alone, 95% 0f this is thrown out after one use and only 14% is recycled. Working mainly as a lash tech and makeup artist I decided the place to create change is within the lash industry. What makes Northern Lashes special is that it's the first lash brand in the UK to be 100% eco-friendly with no plastic within our lash packaging. Our lashes are handmade vegan and cruelty free and can be used up to 30 times. With our strip lash and magnetic lash range. We also create lashes for creatives with our background of makeup artistry. We create bespoke lashes for film and theatres.

34

I started my business during the pandemic after the door to my salon had to close due to covid this gave me the opportunity

to create the brand. Obstacles I have had to overcome are definitely locating manufacturers to make such a unique product and of course the obstacle of the pandemic.

a product that was kind to our environment and this has taken time. I’d love to see Northern Lashes in fashion and film colleges as well as people buying them for everyday use. I am also bringing out a line of semi-permanent lashes for lash academies. Northern Lashes one day will have its own academy and I look to train students from the age of 16. I also want to give people the opportunity to train as a lash tech who may not have had the opportunity due to circumstances and the pandemic affecting their income. I Love to see them stocked in Department stores, salons, boutiques and also collaborate with sustainable fashion houses.

All our packaging is plastic free, I keep it top secret as to what material I use for now. Its also 100% biodegradable vegan and cruelty free. Yes I have had a brand like this in mind for quite some time as I say I have worked in the industry now for 21 years. Being a vegan I wanted to create

I am really looking forward to Liverpool fashion week! To network with new people to also show case this amazing brand. Northern Lashes also stands for empowerment and equality and we also support anti bullying and work closely with a anti bullying and mental health charity so I’m really involved with supporting others and meeting people.

Northern Lashes is an eco-friendly company based in Manchester providing handmade vegan lash products, with revolutionary eco-friendly packaging.

VEGAN, ECO FRIENDLY AND SUSTAINABLE At Northern lashes we have intensively researched the lash industry to provided you with a lash brand that is sustainable and eco-friendly. Northern lashes bring to you an alternative and ethical material that gives our Faux-mink lashes the similar effects to mink lashes without harming any of our animal friends . After endless research we are shocked and disappointed to see that the efforts of the lash industry to reduce plastic in their packaging. We at Northern Lashes have had a break through. We take pride in presenting to you our eco-friendly products. We hope you will join us on our quest (quality, urban, eco, sustainable, timely) with our environmentally unique products.

PROFESSIONAL With over 20 years experience in the beauty industry we have seen fashions come and go but lashes are here to stay. We at Northern lashes work endlessly to bring you the best quality vegan lashes from strip lashes to magnetic lashes for every day use with a great customer service, providing you with a speedy delivery.

ART

STEP INSIDE THE NEST THIS MONTH

D

estination Chester, a network of the city’s tourism partners, has taken over the site of the former PROCook shop at 22 Bridge Street with immersive design artist Rachel Shore and transformed it into a magical space where imaginations can run free. The Nest is open all month and hosts a range of creative and reflective events and activities for all ages. The project aims to embrace and explore the natural world that surrounds us through a programme of art, activities, performance, storytelling and amazing large-scale sculptural installations which will appear across the city. Storyhouse and Cheshirebased outdoor arts specialists Wild Rumpus, masterminds of the Just So festival and The Lanterns at Chester Zoo have collaborated

to bring the programme of events and installations to life, with Wild Rumpus designer Rachel Shore creating the magical ‘Nest’ environment. Visitors will be greeted by an avenue of trees which will guide them through an atmospheric dark forest with glimpses of nesting woodland animals and treasures among the trunks. The autumnalhued wonderland includes a performance space, while a willow arch leads to a craft area. And beyond that is The Nest itself – a cosy,

warm and inviting dome filled with floor cushions and tree stump stools where you can slow down, relax and reflect. Some events have restricted numbers of places available. More details and booking via https://www.storyhouse. com/half-term

AUTHOR

Lifestyle chats to author Sue Kythreotou What is your background? I was born and raised in beautiful South Africa where my love for nature was cultivated. I moved to Cyprus after my studies and have been working with children, as a teacher and counsellor, for many years. Since I also have a specialisation in theatre in education, I was involved in directing the theatrical shows at the schools I have worked at. In recent years, I made a decision to work part time in order to fulfill my dreams, and one of those is to write children's literature. I currently live in Cyprus with my husband and two children. When did you come up with the idea of the book? My son, Lucas, often experienced nightmares as a child due to an overactive imagination so I was inspired to write 'Lucas and the Tree.' I wrote the first draft about 20 years ago, put it in a drawer and forgot about it until I finally had the chance to edit and publish it. How long did it take you to write? I can't

remember how long the first draft took but it was quite quick. When I started working on it the second time round, I put more thought into it and it took a few hours to edit. It was easy to write because I had lived through the experience and so it poured out of me and onto the paper. What is the outline of the story? The story is about a little boy, Lucas who loves to play under the shade of

the mulberry tree where he listens to the birds and often just lies there and daydreams. One night as he's about to fall asleep he suddenly hears a strange noise and he begins to imagine what it might be. He calls out to his mum who comes to his rescue and with her support, love and patience, together they try to discover what the strange noise is. Mum teaches Lucas to be courageous and

soon they are both pleasantly surprised when they finally find out what it is. What age is it suitable for? The story is for children from 4 up to and including 8 year olds. The story may also be used by educators of the senior primary school to discuss the use of figures of speech in writing or for a PSHE lesson to discuss the emotion of fear. Who was the book published with? Lucas and the Tree is a Bookworm publication and can be purchased at bookstores in Cyprus as well as directly from me. It is also available at: Crazy Cow Gifts, which is an online store. Amazon as an ebook https://www.amazon. co.uk/dp/B08RS99HNM Not So Big Fish as an animated interactive ebook. https://notsofishy. shop/collections/childrensinteractive-ebooks/lucas How easy is it to publish? Since I didn't know much about publishing it was difficult. It was a learning journey where I needed to do research and I asked a lot of questions. I tried submitting my book abroad and it

was accepted but since I wanted to be part of the whole publishing journey,(hands on) I made a decision to do it locally. What helped the most is when I went to a bookstore and found books by Cypriot authors, looked to see who the publishers were, and then chose one that seemed to be the most appropriate. Thankfully my submission was accepted and the book was finally published. It took time and effort but I finally got there. What are you most proud of? Firstly, my family-my children and husband and then of course the fact that I was able to publish 'Lucas and the Tree.'

Will there be a follow up? I'm hoping to publish another book in the near future which is not a follow up but a completely different story. How disciplined do you need to be to write? I believe that when one writes about real experiences it is easier than just making one up. One needs to be inspired to write and usually this inspiration comes from our experiences. It takes time, effort and creativity to edit a story and to make it appealing to the reader. If you want to get the job done then you have to be disciplined and consistent.
