BUSINESS

I

n order to be successful in PR you have to be prepared to take risks. Be different. Stand out. Not everyone can afford PR and if you do insist on doing it yourself then at least do it properly. What is going to make your pitch different? Don’t be afraid to court controversy and stay away from cliches such as “think outside the box.” Ironically by saying that you absolutely are not. As a PR manager it’s your job to get people talking about your client., which, if you’re doing your own PR, is you. You want to evoke a reaction and get people debating your story Successful campaigns I have written that have made national news: I banned the Scousebrow from models at Liverpool Fashion Week. The news went viral and I was banned from attending celebrity launch party in Liverpool much to my amusement. However on a much bigger scale, it was a topic of discussion in USA Today. I banned models from using sunbeds at Liverpool Fashion Week and teamed up with a national fake tanning brand to highlight the dangers of sunbed use. Ban the Beds won a national PR award.

I actively campaign for parents to take their children out of school in term time and started the hashtag #familiescomefirst. It made national headlines and got me a spot on This Morning. Eighteen years ago the workplace was very different and it was almost taboo to take a child to work never mind breast feed them. As self employed I had no choice but to do this. It grabbed the attention of radio DJs and I became a spokesperson for working women in support of breastfeeding in public. So how do you change the way you think? To be successful in PR you need to have an open mind and a clear head in order to get your creative juices flowing. 95% of the population will carry out the same routine day in and day out. Get up, shower, have breakfast, go to work, come home, go to the gym, make dinner, watch TV and go to bed. Eat, sleep, be uninspiring, repeat. You can’t afford to waste your time doing this. Read a book. Ok if you don’t have time to read a book pick up a magazine instead. Something that you would never normally be interested in but guess

what, you’ll be unravelling a whole new world you barely knew about. Eat something you’ve never tried before. And absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, spend time away from your phone and laptop. Go for a walk, swim, take a trip to somewhere you’ve never been. Turn up to exhibition you’ve never really given much thought to. When you’re wanting to do PR for your own business you have to look at yourself as if your business is your PR client. Think of it as a third party. You work for them. My new course F*** This Life, I’m Living The Dream. And So Can You, 21 days to success, is available to download soon and the first 100 people receive it for half price. Email me for details:

LIFE COACH

Berny Robertson, Life and Love Strategist Instagram: @Ask_Berny_Lifecoach How did you get into Coaching? Honestly… I feel I was born into it. Childhood adversity, desperation and my own survival needs; introduced me to the world of psychology and personal development in my very early teens and I’ve been hooked ever since.

to severe mental and physical burnout for over 5 years. The battle to survive and then to carve out a life for myself as the ‘new me’ was the most valuable learning experience I’ve ever had (I’m still on this journey).

Changing the trajectory of my life despite the odds is at the heart of everything I do as a Coach. It ignited my passion for helping others to do the same.

My eldest son becoming involved with drugs and going to prison absolutely floored me and undoubtedly contributed to my burnout and subsequent stroke.

What did you study to get to where you are today? I’m addicted to learning and researching haha. I have a BA (Hons) in Learning, Development & Support and studied Psychology at masters level in uni. I then made it my *mission* to train with the best on the planet for all my coach specific training. And I’ve spent the best part of the last 2 decades studying and researching in and around the areas of psychology and neuroscience. What are the 3 biggest obstacles you have overcome? My childhood was the epitome of ‘extreme’ adversity which fuels my passion to help others, every single day.

6

My determination to serve at the highest level led me

What can you offer? I’ve helped thousands of women to break free from their dysfunctional relationship patterns and go on to find and keep the love of their life. When you’re struggling with your relationships, it impacts every area of your life. I offer: 1:1 personal coaching programmes (ULTIMATE 100 l100) Group programmes (more accessible option and valuable for gaining insights from people in similar situations) Digital Courses – Coming Soon (self-study option) What is the first step you need to take to improve your life? All areas of your

life are inextricably linked so it’s a holistic job. You need to focus on your; physical body, emotions, time, career, finances, contribution and spirituality. If I had to choose one… I’d say it’s your mindset for sure. What motivates you? Helping people turn their lives around… Watching my clients reclaim their *true* identity and do a 180 from painful situations to owning their life and taking control of their own future. Nothing compares. How do you stay motivated? That’s simple. Understanding you get nothing for nothing in life and no-one is coming to save you. When you stop making it all about you and start giving to others, making an impact on the world and working towards leaving a legacy, you don’t need motivation… You have PURPOSE! Why is a positive mindset so important? It’s not important – it’s everything… Life is 80% mindset and only 20% strategy. Your mindset is the difference between: Success and Failure Being Happy or Miserable Having Financial Freedom or being Skint With a growth mindset you can achieve anything in life. Human potential is limitless!!

Mattia said: “I always considered myself lucky for three main reasons. “First, I felt the lump when it was only small reducing the risks of the cancer spreading.

“The real struggle was being diagnosed during the pandemic. At that time, I couldn’t see my family as they are based in Italy and there was a national lockdown. Myself and my parents really suffered from this. Also, I couldn’t have people visiting me at hospital after surgery and during my treatments.

“Second, the great support and professionalism I found in my Macmillan nurse and all the nurses and doctors. Their prompt response was crucial in removing the tumour quickly and providing me with the right cure for it.

“I was fortunate to have a Macmillan nurse with me when I was told about the diagnosis. She was really kind and was there for me to ask questions. She was so empathetic. She really understood the shock and fear that I was experiencing. She gave me her number so I could call her whenever I had worries or questions.

He spoke to friends from all over Italy to find the best authentic recipe. He’s a complete star. To be honest he should have his own show and my kids loved his recipe.” “Rome is the true home of carbonara.”

HEALTHY LIVING

RIO FERDINAND

TAKES ON THE NATION’S FOOD FAILS Ex-footballer and TV pundit, Rio Ferdinand, has taken part in a unique food experiment that sees the superstar sportsman sitting in the hot seat and taking on the nation’s food fails Tell us about the ‘Ban the Bland’ campaign with Peperami! What made you want to get involved? As a nation, we’ve got a bit of a reputation for our food being bland so my competitive nature came out and I jumped at the chance to take part, eager to show people how we can do it better. As part of the experiment, the crew had me try some of the nation’s food fails – which I was dreading! I wanted to see if some of the strange combinations could be wonderful, but on the day, they were just plain awful! Being an exfootballer, the crew had me trying foods famous at matches – such as a ‘Wigan kebab’ and jellied eels, which weren’t for me. My favourite part of the day was creating my snack solution – ‘The

12

Rio Ferdinand has been challenged by Peperami to take on the nation’s food fails and trial Britain’s saddest snacks. Calling for Brits to #BanTheBland, Rio offers a solution with his very own edible ‘Snackadium’ to be tucked into during a summer of sport. To watch the full episode, visit @PeperamiTV on Instagram.

Snackadium’ – an edible football pitch perfect to tuck into when watching the Euros. What is your go-to snack? When you’re playing football, it’s really important to keep up your energy levels throughout the match, so high-carb meals such as pasta and chicken were always my go to before a game.

Now I’m on the go so much and I work as a pundit on live games for BT Sport, so I don’t need to be as specific about what I’m eating but still like to get the balance rightbut the half time snacks are still important! We usually get lots of options in the studio or I’ll

take things with me from home. Something that is quick and easy that you can grab easily is good option. I always have a half time cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit, particularly to warm me up on the colder matchdays. What food to you is boring? Basically, any food lacking in taste is an absolute no-go. I love big flavour combinations which is another reason I wanted to be a part of the ‘Ban the Bland’ campaign- I just can’t see the point of eating something tasteless. The main thing I don’t like is food or snacks being too plain or dry. After dinner, we do have a sweet tooth, so we treat ourselves to a range of sweets to relax in front of the TV. My favourite meal is chicken and rice- the key to it is the special seasoning, which is what makes the meal taste so good. We’ll often have that at home. I have always been a fan of trying out foods, but I am an Italian food fan, that’s why I got involved in opening up a restaurant in Manchester called Rosso. I’m also a big fan of Pie and Mash! But you have to do it proper, with the liquor and all!

What is your biggest culinary pet peeve? Bad table manners. Leaving the table without asking and having your phone with you at dinner times are all banned in our house. The kids know what’s expected of them at the table and what I’m not going to stand for! I really love how food can bring you together, sitting down together at mealtimes or the effort of making a home cooked meal on a date night. If I’m ever feeling down, Kate will make me a roast dinner. Honestly, her Sunday roast is unrivalled. We’ll do a roast most Sundays anyway and it’s always a special family meal. How was lockdown for you and the family? I’m really grateful though for the extra time it’s given me at home with Kate and the kids and to make the most of the little, everyday moments. It made me appreciate the NHS even more for the unbelievable work that they did and are still doing for us all.

him to see or play with other children, but we’re just delighted to have him as part of our family and I feel pleased that I’ve been able to spend more time at home following his birth. What is next for your career? I’ve got lots of really exciting projects coming up. I am really enjoying my punditry work with BT Sport My two older sons are really into their football- it’s great to see them enjoying the game and that’s the most important thing for me to see at the moment. It’s always been important to me that they play because they want to, not because their dad did. If they did get into football professionally, then great but I always remind them that it’s all about hard work and dedication! I’ll support them in whatever it is that they choose to do though. As long as they give it their all.

A very memorable moment that happened for our family during lockdown though was the birth of Cree! It was strange welcoming him in these circumstances and not being able to visit friends and family or for 13

INSPIRATIONAL

Lifesyle meets Jacqui Gray, community champion and warrior who is fighting back A little about myself and why this is so important to me. Six years ago after suffering many years of abuse everything came to a head when my children were taken to another country without my consent. There was little anyone could do other than check their safety, as laws change once out of our country. As a result I had a mental breakdown, losing my job, home all of my possessions and found myself alone and pregnant. At that time I wanted to die, the only thing that saved me was my unborn baby. I ended up in refuge, with nothing and only a couple of friends who had tried their best to help but my heart and world were shattered at losing my children. Without doubt I would not have survived as I spent every day wishing I was dead, but then I gave birth to my beautiful boy. He saved me, brought me back to life and gave me purpose.

14

The refuge was a tough place to live, and I saw horrible things on a daily basis. It was difficult 14

having my baby stay there around drugs and fights, prostitution as well as seeing new women arrive who had been beaten up. One thing we mostly always had in common was we arrived at the refuge in what we were stood in, the clothes on our backs. Some Kind people would make donations to the refuge and that's where we would get our clothes from. To have worked most of our lives and end up with nothing, not so much as a hairbrush was something that will forever stay with me as I felt less than a woman I felt that I didn't matter and being abused most of my life this is something I had been told throughout. I stayed in the refuge for almost two years, and I became like a mother figure to these ladies. Most of them saw me as someone who understood and could help them. Because of this the refuge asked me to become a peer support worker. I learned so much from these women and in what was no doubt the darkest time of my life I made some amazing friends I'm still friends with today. I never judge anyone, not the prostitutes or drug takers. We all have a story to tell why we've ended

up the way we have. I'm just fortunate that I had my baby to save me, most of these ladies didn't have that. Six years in my life has changed dramatically, I have my children back in my life. I am blessed enough to say I live the life I once dreamed and survived that which was supposed to break me, and there has to be some purpose for this, I Believe it's to help others. I still suffer with my mental health which I still receive medical support for and I'll continue to speak openly about that as it's so important that we all do. I now help women who have fled abuse, sometimes women still being abused. I have women say to me when they first meet me how i don't have a clue because from the outside i look to lead a comfortable life yet not long ago I was homeless stood with just the clothes on my back so I understand and from that viewpoint I have what I believe the best insight into how to help them. This is something that has stuck with me and so aside from helping with emotional support I now wish to help with the practical side of things. We are in the process of setting up an event for these ladies where they

can come along, get their hair and nails done, receive treatments and help them feel human again. This is so important! Self love and self worth are absolutely everything and without a doubt go a long way in helping these ladies finally break free from returning to the perpetrators. It's more than just a haircut it's saying you are worthy of being cared for. To see the spark come on again in their eyes is a beautiful thing to behold, or to hear the laugh they thought they never would have again is a privilege. I am also setting up a clothes hub, whereby companies such as Marks an Spencer and TK Maxx among others are helping in donating their unsold stock. The donation bags are amazing and whoever the kind lady was who donated mine i'll be forever thankful too but to receive a new item of clothing the ladies can pick from themselves is such a confidence booster. Our aim for this is to help with self worth, to give these ladies who have lost all sense of self worth their own identity back. Thank you to the companies who kindly donate and if any others would like to then please contact myself at jacquigray0909@gmail. com. 15

BEAUTY THERAPY

Benefits of massage therapy after lockdown By salon owner Jackie Rose Why do I recommend massage? Massage has so many benefits, one in particular is stress relief and now as a lot of people are working from home at inappropriate desks and offices for long periods of time, their backs are hunched over small computers so the rounding of their shoulders can create tightness and shortening of the pecs at the front. This puts extra stress and strain on their lower back and your shoulders therefore massage is absolutely brilliant to release the tension and undo those knots that have been building up because of poor posture. Massage also improves circulation so again your body functions better.

16

What types of massage do you offer? We offer aromatherapy which uses essential oils that penetrate into the blood stream fast, they have many benefits for stress related issues, can improve sleep plus and are excellent with painful symptoms during periods and/or menopause.

We also do Swedish massage which is deep tissue massage, again for knots and nodules which have built up from either working out during exercise, not necessarily stretching properly after exercise allowing lactic acid to build up, often from a lot of driving or sports. We also have a private physiotherapist on board and she runs out of our salon on a Wednesday or Friday. Anything medical related that as therapists we cannot touch can be referred straight to her. Health benefits for a massage are obviously clear mind, clear body. It helps with stress relief, tension, helps improve problems within the gut and relieve constipation due to inactivity again due to lockdown resulting from inactivity. Holistic means ‘whole’ and the whole body comes into play with massage. We recommend you don’t have alcohol directly after a massage because you will get drunk

faster as the body system is moving better and working in a more unified manner, alcohol will travel round your body faster and ruin all the good holistic benefit from a massage. Coming out of lockdown, more people want to look after their bodies and wellbeing whilst pampering themselves and actually enjoy getting back into a routine, which is why it is so much in demand now. People have been stuck indoors and want to treat themselves and feel good again.

But even in this beautiful coastal spot, tensions swirl. Once one of the world's most popular soap operas, but now with ratings and syndication at an all-time low, the production has been sold to an American businesswoman, beautiful and malevolent Madeline Kane, the new network owner who arrives on the tiny island just off Jersey, determined to do whatever it takes to get the show back to number one. Writer Farrah, star Catherine and producer Amanda are the driven, ambitious women who keep the show on the

road. But Farrah is losing episodes to the network's lead male rival, Catherine is terrified of the public falling out of love with her and Amanda's evil husband Jake, vice president of the network, is plotting to get his own wife kicked off the show. As the dawn of a new era begins, cast and crew turn against each other with loyalty, decency, and trust, replaced by scandal, betrayal, and an outrageous ambition to survive. In a true battle of the sexes, these women will do anything to stay on top. But can they team up to bring down their male rivals? Or will jealousy, betrayal and revenge tear their long-held friendships apart? One thing Is for certain, only the most ruthless woman will survive...

‘Glamourous women, hunky men, mendacious producers, insecure actors, people stabbing each other in the front back and side, and a lot of sex!’ The Times ‘It’s rollicking good fun and no female character says she feels ‘invisible’ in this novel; they’re all far too busy juggling lovers.’ Daily Mail

‘With women who are beautiful, shrewd and determined and a story of revenge, treachery and lust – Ruthless Women is a shockingly good read.‘ The Sun 19

HOSPICE LAUNCHES

A ROSE TO REMEMBER

T

his summer, St. Joseph’s Hospice in Thornton is inviting people to remember a loved one by dedicating a rose in their memory as part of its summer remembrance event. The hospice in Thornton is creating a special Rose to Remember garden in its woodland grounds for families to visit during the summer where they will see their own special rose. Each rose will include the name of the person being remembered and their relationship to the person dedicating the rose. Maxine Armstrong, head of fundraising and lottery at St. Joseph’s Hospice, said: “It helps families to have a special focus of remembrance at different times of the year and during seasons which hold a special significance to them and the memories they hold. “A Rose to Remember is a lovely way that

families can pay tribute to the lives of their loved ones and we are very fortunate to have such beautiful woodland grounds which are open throughout the year and are the perfect place to sit, reflect and remember, particularly during the warmer summer months.” At the end of the summer, all those who have dedicated a rose to a loved one will be invited to the hospice to view

the garden and enjoy afternoon tea and cake. Families will then be able to take their rose home or, if they prefer, leave it in the Rose to Remember garden at the hospice. To dedicate A Rose to Remember, the hospice asks for a minimum donation of £5 per rose. Dedication forms are available to download at www.stjhospice.org.uk or simply call 0151 932 6044 to give your details over the phone. BEAUTY A revolutionary skincare product is launching in the UK promising to reverse the signs of skincare without aesthetic procedures How did you discover the product? I have been partnered with Isagenix since the UK launch in May 2017. One of the things that attracted to me them was their constant pursuit of improvement and innovation in the wellness space and Collagen Elixir™ could not be a better example of that. Collagen Elixir was first launched in the Australian market in 2020 followed by the US launch in January 2021. To date more than 14 million bottles have been sold in the States and Collagen Elixir has already been featured in top beauty magazines and nominated as ‘Best Inner Beauty Product’ by Marie Claire Australia. I have waited not so patiently for the UK and Europe launch and finally it is here! What makes Collagen Elixir so special? Collagen Elixir is so special because it combines sustainably sourced Marine Collagen with an ancient blend of botanicals to support healthy skin, hair and nails*. 26

There are many different types of collagen, but marine collagen used by Isagenix is composed mostly of type I, the most predominant collagen type in the body, and it’s the major structural component in skin, bone, tendons, connective tissues, and fibrous cartilage. It is rich in unique, specialised amino acids that have targeted benefits for skin health and support the body's natural production of collagen.

normal function of skin. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, nails and skin.

The collagen content of the Elixir is higher than most other products at 5g of sustainably sourced marine collagen and it is bottled on site in 0.15 seconds so there is zero oxidation and no need for preservatives. Many marine based products can have a fishy taste but Isagenix has added ancient botanicals such as goji and acerola berries which make it taste amazing. The Elixir also contains zinc, biotin and vitamin C to support healthy skin, hair and nails*, and has ZERO added sugar.

How much does it cost? We have various packs and prices but one bottle is around the price of a takeaway coffee.

How long does it take for results to show? As with all products/ supplements results vary from person to person, we recommend one bottle per day for 30 days to see maximum benefits, as with all Isagenix products the Collagen Elixir comes with a 30 day full money back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied with your results.

What do you love about it? The results from Australia and America have completely blown my mind and I love the fact that this a 100% natural product with no artificial additives, as well as all packaging being 100% recyclable and the product being produced in a carbon neutral facility. MUSIC

Aka Leo Romero, the official RagnBone man tribute act In an interview with Amanda Moss

Scouted in Cyprus and coming to Liverpool to headline the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards in November How did you get into singing? I have always been around singing from an early age as my mother was a huge Michael Bolton fan and we listened to all kinds of music. There was a joke in the family that when I asked her about my dad she would say Michael Bolton was. Whenever my mum had friends over, because I was stick thin she would make me crawl under the rug by the fire and sing Thriller by Michael Jackson and that’s how I discovered I could sing. Growing up in Wales I was in the choir too. When did you become professional? I was in school and getting into trouble with the lads I was hanging out with and my mum’s friends had a singing job and I got a job with them as their roadie so on Fridays and Saturdays I couldn’t be out and about running around.. They found out

28

I could sing and dragged me up on stage and I would get extra and from that point I realised I wanted to get paid for something I enjoyed doing. What was the turning point in your life? I was living in Spain, I had a bar there and was a KissFM presenter and I had a motorcycle accident in 2014, I was technically dead. There were messages on my facebook wall of condolence and people thought I was dead but after my crash I was back in Wales and my mum was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, I couldn’t walk, I was reading all these messages and writing back and there was a message from a girl I had a holiday romance with and I wrote back saying, “hey I’m not dead!” And I married her. Unfortunately we are now seperated.

What is your biggest hope for the future? That I find my daughter. She was put up for adoption 19 years ago and I just want to find her as I never wanted to give her up. I am on all the adoption websites and have been trying for years. But unless her parents tell her she was adopted she will never find out. How did you end up in Cyprus? I was living in Norway recuperating but Covid hit and lockdown was kicking in. I was working on some music I had online and some friends in Cyprus were trying to get me here for years and so I did. With the lockdown I couldn’t obviously get gigs so I through myself into the Helping Hearts charity as a volunteer.

How did you become the RagnBone tribute? I have been following Rory since 2013 and following his music. He has done two studio albums and 16 EP’s. I’m really eclectic with my music choice and I like the fact that his music isn’t stuck in 1 genre. I started singing his songs and it kind of blew up from there. When I first started doing his tribute the only song people knew was Human so there would be another 11 songs to do but a lot were too far off the ball for people to understand so I added my own mix. That and trying to get the tracks made was a ballache because item weren’t out there. It’s been great because people have come up to me after my shows and said, “I didn’t know who RagnBone man was” and then they go and follow my music too. They get it now. His life is very similar to mine. What are your plans for the future? I am working with DNA records in Cyprus with Mac & vvs1 from So Solid Crew and a few other talented producers such as C4 and we’re doing a song for John Lennon Memorial Concert. There’s a lot of rap and it’s crossing genres and it’s really good and I have just done a music video for Equlibrium.
