oodness, we are hurtling through the year at lightning speed! This month kicks off 6 months of travel as I take on more international fashion projects and press trips. At the time of writing this I am preparing for the first of two Lifestyle Retreats in Cyprus. With our ever so busy lifestyles it is so important to stop, reflect and spring clean the mind of clutter in order to make way for stronger clarity of our goals. This month we are fortunate to be invited to Lanzarote to discover the unspoilt north side of the island which has been set up as a retreat destination. Read all about it in the June issue. May is all about Manchester Fashion Week as well with some incredibly inspiring stories behind the designers. If you love fashion and want to see what’s up and coming then get your tickets now at www. manchesterfashionweek. com. We are never far from an awards ceremony

How is the new tour going so far? Urs Bühler: “We played castles and stately homes in the UK last July with our Timeless tour, which was based on the new album. We played the whole repertoire, which was actually quite risky, but the album is very beautiful so it went down really well. This is more back-to-basics - the four of us singing. We still do a few songs from the Timeless album but we do all our greatest hits as well. It’s about 100 minute show, without an interval. The audience seem to like it so I’m very excited to bring it to the UK.” Did you ever expect to be together for 15 years when you started out?
6
Seb: “Never. It’s hard enough to keep up a marriage, so imagine how
it feels keeping a whole band together - especially when it was an arranged marriage. I still think sometimes: ‘It’s not real’. It’s striking the amount of counties and cities we’ve been to. I find it amazing. I know more where a lounge is than where the forks and the cutlery are at home. I lived in England for almost 10 years and it’s always like coming back home.” Narrowing down the Greatest Hits set list must have been a challenge. Urs: “It is, definitely. There are certain songs, which have to be in there. Obviously Unbreak My Heart and My Way. We’ve done Greatest Hits shows before but the repertoire was different. We do have a lot of songs and have done a lot of specials with other
artists, like the football World Cup. It is difficult. We get help from outside - we talk to management and always size it down to a show length. I’ve been listening back to the first albums and we’ve got such beautiful, original songs like I Believe In You, Isabel - which we’re doing again - and other songs we do in the show. I’d be very excited to do a show with only original Il Divo songs. We’ve done a lot of covers and people know these songs but I think we have a stunning original repertoire. Will you put Simon Cowell on the guest list for the tour? Urs: “If he’s interested in coming to see a show, he’s invited. He’s a very busy man. Like us, he’s travelling a lot so you never know where to pin him down.

Which home comforts do you travel with? Urs: “Nothing really. I’m so used to travelling and spending nights in hotels I feel so comfortable in whatever bed I lay down, unless it’s really bad quality and the pillows are bad. That’s really annoying. I take clothes with me - two suitcases for two months and I wish I could take 10 because I like my wardrobe. I have got my wife with me if that counts for home comforts? She’s travelling with me all year. We got married two and a half years ago under the premise that we’re going to spend our life together and not that we’re going to be married and I’m going to be gone 10 months out of the year. She’s always with me and we go through all these adventures together. Home is where my heart is and that’s right next to me.” Which British traditions do you love?
8
David: “Even though we can get it in other places there is no substitute for the British version of fish
and chips and mushy peas - love it. Full English breakfast every morning. I gain a little bit of weight when I come to the UK. I really do relate somehow to the sensibility of how life is conducted. We lived there for two years at the beginning of Il Divo’s conception in a cluster of apartments in south west London. We really got to spend time and absorb the sensibility of
the English nature - the reserved way that everyone speaks to each other, the politeness. Whether that politeness is actually heartfelt or undertone sarky it’s still there. There’s a being there able to deal with each other as human beings. I don’t think in the US we see that nearly as much. We still see a young development of the mind
of the American people versus the English people who are clearly a fully formed adult society. Seb: “I love the countryside. I’ve been glamping, when my kids were younger, in Hereford etc. I really like Somerset. I think the UK has the best countryside. I love the people in general. I remember living in Notting Hill, going to the market and people going: ‘Hello love, how you are?’. So friendly and very positive. I love the tea and scones. I love your traditions. I think England has amazing traditions. It reminds me how important it is to keep as these things tend to disappear.” As a Beatles fan, Seb, you must get excited when you play shows in Liverpool. Seb: “I love it. I do. I’m like a kid. What an amazing time. I would have loved to have been born around that time and have a band then. The music industry has changed dramatically. Even the video. Now it’s streaming. Not to sound old fashioned by I don’t think music is appreciated as much.”

the fourth most common cancer. Research shows that taking part in regular physical activity, which is 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking every week, can decrease your risk of bowel cancer.
The other excuses are: • Don’t have enough energy • Work commitments • Don’t enjoy exercise
As Bowel Cancer UK publish findings of their new poll to launch the charity’s latest fundraising challenge, Step up for 30, has been launched to encourage people to take up regular exercise and be more active to reduce their risk of bowel cancer. It’s really simple, just get sponsored to do 30 minutes of physical activity every day for 30 days in June. Every 30 minutes someone dies of bowel cancer in the UK.
More than a third of young people aged 1824 said they’re too busy studying to exercise for the recommended amount of time, whilst a third of people aged 25-34 cited work commitments as a barrier. Every year almost 42,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer, it’s

You could walk, swim, dance, run, cycle, do yoga – the choice is yours! “It’s really easy to get involved, there’s lots of creative ways you can get sponsored and get active during the month - doing squats while the kettle boils, taking the stairs rather than the lift, going for a walk during your lunch break, getting off the bus a stop early or even hoolahooping during the TV adverts!”

A
half century on from the moon landing, visitors to Liverpool’s World Museum this spring are invited to experience an Earth’s-eye-view of the universe in the exhibition, Astronomy Photographer of the Year, opening 3 May to 1 September 2019. It features 100 aweinspiring photographs that include the winners and shortlisted images from the 2018 competition. The competition is organised by the Royal Observatory Greenwich. 22
In 2018, more than 4,200 entries from amateur and professional photographers from 91 countries were received. Images selected for the exhibition feature a mesmerising mosaic of the Great Orion and the Running Man Nebula; a magical scene of an Aurora Borealis exploding over the south coast of
Iceland and a solar transit of the International Space Station between the massive sunspots AR 12674 and AR 12673. Senior Curator, Dr Geraldine Reid says, “The Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition is hugely popular. The exhibition celebrates the very best in astrophotography from around the world. Each year it produces

images that broaden our perception of the universe and year on year, shows its diverse and wonderful beauty.” “During the run of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing on 20 July 1969. Its timing couldn’t be more perfect, and where else, but World Museum to enjoy such dazzling images?” 2018 judges included artist Sarah Pickering, comedian and keen amateur astronomer Jon Culshaw and Editor of BBC Sky at Night Magazine Chris Bramley, alongside a host of experts in the worlds of art and astronomy.

80’s legend
MADNESS top billing at Aintree this summer.. What are the qualities that make Madness endure? I think the reason we endure is that we genuinely do enjoy ourselves. From the very beginning you could see the joy in the early videos we made and hear it in the records. I genuinely think the whole spark or art of craft and creativity was a by-product of our friendship. I think that’s what people feel. It’s a genuine experience. It’s not manufactured. I can’t ever remember being onstage and feeling fed up with the people around me. How do you keep the feeling of it being fresh? Touring for years on end is what drains the lifeblood 26
out of a lot of acts that I see. Each tour we do we try and make unique – and special.
Racecourses make up quite a bit of your itinerary, are you fond of a flutter or a day at the track? I’m not a gambling man generally but I like it when you can see the steam coming out of the horses’
nostrils and that whole thing in front of you. I do like it but I’m terrible loser, which has been my saving grace as far as gambling is concerned. It’s stopped me getting too involved. I’m really looking forward to all the racecourse shows. Last time we played at Haydock we had a tremendous gig something like 20,000 people turned up and they were only expecting 10,000. Simply Red had held the record up to that point so I think we are the record holders for Haydock, returning as reigning champions.

Peter, you’re back with your first album this century, can you tell us about the record and your reasons for recording it? I had songs I wanted people to hear, and things that I wanted to say And I wanted it to be EVERYTHING I could muster, the full range, total passion and honesty, and songs with my heart on my sleeve, because I didn't know if I'd ever do it again. What’s it like being back? The reaction has been ace, people have been very generous, and it feels right.
Better than before in fact! It's the 40th anniversary of the first single, 'Better Scream', so there's going be a load of reissues and rare things and surprises to celebrate. What can fans expect at the homecoming gig at the O2 Academy Liverpool? Weeeeelll...It's the Pete Wylie show, which means me but magnified! And unpredictable. And magical! The stage will look like Disgraceland, my home {and there is nowhere like Disgraceland!}. I'm singing better than I've
sung in my life, and playing guitar is still my favourite thing in the world. So all in all, you'd be mad to miss it, it will be magnificent!

his year is the 35th anniversary of the debut Icicle Works album and the 25th anniversary of Head Like A Rock. My second solo outing which I recorded in L.A. with Crazy Horse, Neil Young’s band. It seemed only right to mark the occasion by putting on a show of two halves by playing them both in their entirety. These are my
biggest records, the Icicle Works LP was very successful here, in Europe, Japan and mainly in the States. Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) is still everywhere over there. Head Like A Rock sold bucketloads in the U.K. and Germany of all places and was nominated for the Mercury Prize.
It’s quite an undertaking doing these shows. We have backing singers, a percussionist and second guitar. An eight piece cosmic juggernaut. I can still hit all the high notes, I’ve no idea why, I’m still a smoker regrettably but I’m very grateful the voice is unaffected. I doubt I’ll be able to sing all the way up there when I’m 65. Liverpool will be extra special. It always is. ~ IMc.

Top revision tips for students as exams get underway... •
Make fact or note cards - check out Quizlet.com, you have to register but it’s an amazing free resource, that’s really easy to use
•
Draw mind maps - do this after each chunk of intense study, write down what you can remember then revisit your notes, see what you missed and write those bits down in a different colour.
•
Highlight notes - Highlighting one key point or fact for each topic area can effectively breakdown the volume of information you need to remember. Sometimes colour can help text ‘stick’.
•
•
•
Make lists - Find the exam board's specification (this lists what you need to know), break down those topics into smaller topics, order them into priority of what you need to learn and revise from there. Breaking it down into these smaller sections makes the task seem more manageable and less overwhelming. Write essay plans - Look at the question, break it down into chunks and then plan each section to include: point, evidence, explanation (pee!) and make sure to include a conclusion and be evaluative throughout. Answer past questions - try to self mark and get a someone else to mark your work too - this helps you learn as you go, and also ensures that you are being realistic with your marking - you need to know that you’re not being too harsh or too generous.
Don’t work for hours without a break - memory and recall become less and less effective. Plan your revision in sessions of up to one hour and take a short break between sessions.
34
Change topics each session – this can be hard to begin with, but it’s a
very effective strategy. It focuses your mind to get a certain amount or specific task done in a set time, and makes the time spent revising really count. For revision sessions to be useful and worthwhile make some sacrifices…
• •
•
Find a quiet place to work, leave the TV switched off Tell all your contacts on Snap, Insta, Messaging, etc.. you are exiting the social media world for one hour. Put phones on silent and move them out of sight, switch off any messaging apps etc. (you can do it!).
Make sure you include lots of essay plans, past questions and past papers; application of knowledge has more marks than recall in some subjects. Look at mark schemes and examiners’ reports. That is how you will learn how examiners expect you to answer questions, what gains and what doesn’t gain marks. Around half of your revision time should be spent on past questions. nother month is flying by .. and sadly it looks like I’ve worn my fairy wings for the last time with LHK Productions at the Epstein Theatre after our last performance of The Wizard of Oz which was certainly going out on a high with an incredible cast and crew. With recent events at the theatre, after 8 happy years there with the most incredible audiences who have certainly made the last 3 years when I’ve appeared there ones to remember, it looks like LHK Productions will be finding a new home for their pantos (oh yes they will!)
I personally would like to thank my friend Lee Kelly for not only bringing so many big names to this city, but also for nurturing local talent and making them into stars. His love
S I M M O for the Epstein and his productions knows no bounds, and I have loved working alongside talents such as Michael Chapman who writes and directs all the shows, Lewis Pryor (who Lee has always believed in and watched him blossom as a performer) Lindzi Germain and Ray Quinn, to name but a few. Lee – you’re one of a kind for what you have done for this City – and I know you’ll succeed wherever you go. It has also been a huge month for Liverpool with thousands descending upon Aintree for the Grand National. Once again Greatest Hits Radio teamed up with Merseyrail and we were there to welcome race goers and of course provide the legendary flip flops at the end of the day! Also – Rick Houghton and I were given the rare opportunity of sharing a stage together, and managed not to get thrown off! I also want to say a massive well done to
LHK Entertainments youth group for their performances of High School Musical at the Epstein – it’s been a pleasure to direct this show alongside choreographer Michael Jones and Musical Director Alan Moore – and they excelled themselves, so, so proud of you all. Finally want to say a massive Happy 16th Birthday to my son Michael, he may well tower over me at over 6 foot – but you’ll always be my sunshine bear.

UNDERWEAR BRAND CAMPAIGNS AGAINST UNREALISTIC MALE BODY IMAGE
M
en’s underwear brand, Box & Scandal has launched a UK campaign to fight against unrealistic male body image representations and its toxic effect on men’s mental health and to highlight this they will present their collection on the catwalk at Manchester Fashion using real men of all sizes. This has rightly become a powerful issue for women, but the dangerous impact mainstream depictions of perfect male bodies has had on men was rarely discussed until Bodyguard actor, Richard Madden came forward recently, to insist it also happens to men. He explained that he has had fat rolls pinched; been forced to
44
wear restrictive costumes and is concerned about the impact he will have on other men, by portraying a standard of beauty that he himself admits is almost impossible to achieve. Box & Scandal has promised NEVER to use ’traditional’ models amid a growing crisis for men’s mental health in the UK - something owner, Rob Nicholson, feels is due in part to the advertising, media and entertainment industries’ unrealistic portrayal of men’s appearances. He explains: “There has been a backlash against emaciated female fashion models and the ‘body shaming’ of women. But
for men, there has been near silence on the same issue. “Men account for nearly three quarters of all suicides in the UK and 1 in 8 men have a common mental health problem - and that’s only those who have spoken about their problems. For many years, we have accepted that women’s self-worth is affected by their portrayal in fashion, advertising and the media, so why are we not having the same conversations about men? “We decided at the outset of Box & Scandal that our underwear wasn’t just made for men with sixpacks, so why only show it on men who spend all day in the gym?

he 2019 Quays Culture Summer Festival is set to be the best ever with genuinely world class performers that mean every day audiences will be dazzled with unique sights, sounds and sensations. The free four day event starts with the launch of Arboria an epic structure that introduces audiences to a series of sensory worlds within and culminates in a spectacular 200 metre high-wire walk from the Alchemist across the docks to Media City by world famous performer Chris Bulzini. It will be positioned on the MediaCityUK Piazza, and is described as ”a sculpture people enter to be moved to a sense of wonder at the beauty of light and colour.”
46
Igor Urzelai and Moreno Solinas are two Londonbased artists making and presenting dance performances across Europe and internationally. They make works about people and what makes us such special animals. At Media City their activity
will be focused on solo movement explorations in response to the space they are in. They will be performing spontaneously in the sensory environment of Arboria, creating intimate interventions that audiences will happen across as they enjoy the Quays Festival. Providing an enthralling finale to Quays Festival 2019 is High Wire Performer Chris Bullzini. At 5.30pm on Sunday 2 June, Chris will set off on a two hundred metre long journey across the water from a tower near The Alchemist restaurant to the safety of Media City. Using only a pole for balance, Bullzini will amaze audiences with a stunning journey of daring performance upon a single wire suspended high across the dock. “I need to be ready for all and every possible danger or distraction,” said
Chris, who has recently returned from India where he practiced yoga and meditation as part of his preparation. ”We spend a huge amount of time researching each venue. This is a very big event and I need to be totally focussed. Being a high wire walker is a life choice. It is what I am as well as what I do.” In the build to Chris Bullzini’s High Wire Walk there will be a series of Circus Workshops. Masterminded by Skylight Circus Arts, attendees will be entertained and educated as a range of skills are demonstrated and made freely available, offering a playful invitation to people of all ages and abilities to try something new. Do you suffer from a Fear Of Missing Out?
The FOMO is always multi tasking and generally being at the centre of things. Savvy about social media and likes to be involved in lots of varied stuff. Because of FOMO we also have JOMO (Joy Of Missing Out) They are more likely to think before they act and then pounce at just the right time. There’s no right or wrong way, it’s just a different style. The FOMO can often be seen racing from one meeting to another ... on the phone straight after the meeting ... the FOMO will send a sneaky text under table during the meeting. And if there’s a breakfast 48
networking event then you can put their name down for that. They love to talk about stuff. JOMO often wonders what it is that FOMO does in all these meetings ... they just crack on with the work ... whilst FOMO is talking about work JOMO is actually doing the work. JOMO may even actively dodge meetings, because there is real work to be done. I am instinctively a FOMO but lately I am trying to be more JOMO ... because I think maybe I have underestimated them. They seem to live in the real world, not in the digital world ... they find it easier
to say no, to somehow protect their ‘me time’ ... they are busy doing the right things, rather than just being busy for the sake of it ... they get things done at their own pace, rather than always at 100mph. I’ve embraced the slower me, the more thoughtful me, the more reflective me. Why don’t you try it? Unsubscribe from some of your social media accounts, unfollow people who trigger your inner FOMO, schedule time for friends, give yourself permission to relax and embrace thinking time. See if you can find your JOMO mojo!

Hello Lifestyle readers,
Re-pointing a garden wall
In last month’s column I brought you the fantastic news of the birth of our beautiful Nelly Phillips. One month on and myself and Laura are settled into parenthood and fully embracing the lack of sleep that has now become part of our daily routine! I am perfecting my nappy skills and learning new things every day.
Walls can become structurally unsound if they are not maintained well which can have an impact on the value, safety and the stability of your property. And, they can start to look ugly too.
As we have been busy being parents, work on the Dream Build has naturally slowed down slightly and we are working rooms as and when we find the time. However, the kitchen, bathroom and Nelly’s nursery are all complete and look amazing. The kitchen is undoubtedly the centre piece of the whole project and it’s all thanks to the help of Tile Mountain, Frenchchic Paint and Eurocell whose tiles, paint and windows have given the room the most professional finish possible. Speaking of which, I have also been working on the edits for new Frenchic, Eurocell and Tile Mountain videos which were filmed inside the Dream Build and demonstrate how we have incorporated them into our design. Nelly’s nursery makeover video with Frenchchic has also gone live on our YouTube channel so make sure you head over to Mr and Mrs DIY to watch that! In April I also filmed again with Wagner live for Ideal World channel. This month I have come up with a DIY tip that will help you to get your outdoor space summerready and looking great ahead of BBQ season.

When your pointing has got to the stage where it has started to wear out and crumble away you are left with very noticeable gaps between the perpendiculars of the bricks. This means it’s time to take action. Put on your safety goggles and a dust mask and use a small 4-inch grinder to remove the existing defected cement to an equal depth of 25mm. Dust down the wall to remove the excess debris and you are ready to start pointing. Mix your sand and cement using a four-part sand and one-part cement ratio. Be sure to measure the mixtures accurately to avoid getting a change in colour of the cement. Apply into the grooves using a pointing trowel forcing the mixed mortar into all available perps. Smooth off using the edge of the trowel and leave to dry for about ten minutes before finally striking a neat line across the face of the new pointing with the sharp edge of the trowel. Things you will need: •
18v cordless grinder
•
Pointing trowel
•
Stone blades
•
Bucket
•
Dust mask
•
Sand
•
Safety goggles

WE LLB E I NG
EMMAPRIVILEGE Thank you. How many times a day do you think you say the words ‘thank you’? Now, think about how many times you actually mean it? What I mean is how many times do you say it mindfully? Not just an automatic response. How many times a day do you FEEL thankful? When we are children we are taught to say thank you when someone hands you something, opens the door, helps us, but way do you are never really shown what thank you MEANS. We get so mindless saying thank you that we can forget what it actually means to be thankful for something. Gratitude is a feeling. Gratitude is an energy. It sends out a gorgeous frequency to the universe that allows more of the same back into your life. When you are grateful for something in your life you send a beautiful message to the universe that says ‘more of the same please’.
Gratitude is conformation energy that you are receiving exactly what you want, or that you are grateful for the smallest things in life which are important. It brings happiness, hope, optimism and creates a positive effect in your life. But, what if you feel like you’ve nothing to feel grateful for? That’s the time to search deeper. Don’t assume that because things aren’t ‘going well’ that theres nothing. Even in our greatest times of sadness we can still find things to truly feel gratitude towards. It can be hard in times of struggle to see anything else but that struggle, but it’s possible.
When we open our hearts and our minds to gratitude even in the times when it feels like there is very little to be grateful for, we submit a whole new energy to hope, love and possibility. Once you begin seeing things in your life that you can be grateful for, we see new paths, new options, new light.
In fact it’s necessary. Just be asking yourself ‘where can I find something in this to be grateful for?’

TOP 10 NETWORKING TIPS: • Relax. Take a deep breath, put on your lippy, it’ll be fine. • Be prepared, make sure you know where your venue is, where you can park etc. • Take plenty business cards, and make sure they say what you do and have your contact details on, you’ll be amazed how many don’t! • DO NOT SELL, we need capital letter for this. Networking is about relationship building NOT selling, that comes afterwards. • Don’t hi jack the conversation. • Approach anyone who’s standing alone. These are the people who are dying for someone to talk to them. • Follow up, when you’ve met someone, connect on
w w w. u n i q u e l a d i e s . c o . u k
LinkedIn and give them a call, grab a coffee! • Listen, when it’s someone’s turn to speak, give them the courtesy of listening and do not attempt to guess what they may say. • Don’t dismiss anyone, you do not know who other people know. Get to know them, they may be best friends with your dream client. • Have your elevator pitch ready. This is what you need to say if you have 2 minutes in a lift with someone and you need to share what you do! Enjoy networking it’s not scary, and remember you started networking at school!

The project will break ground in May. It is the first time that Soilbuild has invested in the UK market in the company’s 40-year history. As such, the funding of
Innovo House represents a significant milestone for the organisation and a vote of confidence for Liverpool’s student property sector Lim Han Feng, director of Soilbuild Group Holdings, added: “We have been looking at the UK student accommodation sector for a while and believe that it offers a viable and defensive investment proposition. The macro dynamics work in our favour and we look forward to adding more similar investments in the near future.”
