Hello October I t’s time to cosy on down and get ready for the darker nights. Autumn is definitely here and this month sees us celebrating Halloween and my birthday. For the last year I have been telling everyone the wrong age, I’m actually a year younger than I was telling everyone when I worked it all out! That’s what happens with kids, everything becomes foggy. So from now on I’m telling everyone I am fortyfabulous instead, after all it’s just a number.
Liverpool Fashion Week is the big event in the calendar this month, with the glamorous opening night on 8 October at Mercedes Benz celebrating a decade of fashion in the city. As always we’re supporting emerging talent and independent boutiques with support from Outfit representing the high street, ensuring fashion is for everyone regardless off size or gender. 4
It’s been a whirlwind few months of travel, having just returned from Los Angeles for my fashion showcase and the ultra inspiring Positive Awards. And so it’s important to rest and recharge with our Lifestyle Cyprus retreat mid month, It’s so important to take care of our mental wellbeing as well as our physical bodies and I am looking forward to recharging and rebooting my creative juices and coming up with new events and ideas for the future. Opportunity is everywhere!

THE MISTRESS RETURNS
Angelina Jolie returns to cinema screens – resilient, confident, compassionate, and still as terrifyingly witch-like as ever, it seems!
A
ngelina Jolie requires little introduction – a powder keg of positivity, ambition and a driving force for being able to extract the positive elements out of any of life’s challenges. The actress, environmentalist and campaigner continues to reference the fall-out from her 12-year marriage to Brad Pitt, almost in the sense of it bringing out a version of herself who could toil, battle with and defeat even Lara Croft. And that image fits rather nicely with the return of Maleficent, this time flanked by Michelle Pfeiffer. The first instalment of the Disney fantasy adventure, 10
released five years ago, was a colossal box office success, and this sequel threatens to top the $1bn mark at the box office. “It’s great to be back doing this,” she begins. “Obviously it is our second Maleficent movie and now we have Michelle Pfeiffer and so many great other actors. We have also expanded the story in Aurora, who is of course played by Elle Fanning.”
“Elle has grown up, Aurora has grown up and it’s a new chapter and a new day, and I think that we have done our best with the sequel. In fact, I think we’ve created something incredible!” Not only does the movie prove Jolie’s unerring ability to draw a crowd, but through all the personal grief, it reaffirms the strength and stolid positivity that we all knew
the 44-year-old had tucked away. After all, it’s very often the case that wild throes of philanthropy, of ambassadorial work, of charitable enterprises and even of raising a family – with, in the case of Jolie, six children – can lead an actor, musician or sportsman can become rather numbed to the desire of the very real task in hand… their profession. Not for Angelina. The proof is evident – she is back, and she never went away… although her desire to mend so many of society’s ills away from the big screen have reaffirmed the fact we are in a different era of celebrity relevance, where the world’s most recognisable names are expected to contribute culturally as much as cinematically. “I think as far as these projects go, the more you invest in them the more they become a part of you, to the extent where it’s very difficult to start relinquishing those emotions. “ “I remember, the first time I went to Cambodia around 20 years ago was when we were doing Tomb Raider - it was the first film shot there after the war. “ “I felt very ignorant because I knew nothing about the war and I went to the country thinking
I would meet angry and broken people. But instead I was taken by how resilient and proud and beautiful they were, as was the country. One day I went for a walk by myself and I went to a little bookshop on the side of the street and I bought a $2 book called First They Killed My Father. I sat and I read it - it changed my views and it taught me so much. A few months later I was working on the landmine cause, and look at me now, I have a house there!” Of course, Jolie’s devotion to the Southeast Asian country ultimately led to her adopting eldest son Maddox. He has been flanked by five other children – four of them adopted – and all of them raised in the image of Jolie and her ubiquitous view on the world. “My children have always been my true connection to the world,” she says. “I see them growing and learning and developing and flourishing and it gives me more pride than anything else I have ever done in life.” “What I will say is It’s amazing how quickly they turn into adults – only recently my son Maddox has left home to go to university. That was incredibly hard, but actually it was also really exciting.
He’s ready and he is so smart, and I am so proud of him and I am excited about his choices. Our house in Cambodia is six hours away but I am still going to be one of those mums who will stalk!” Although staying close to her brood is obviously of paramount importance to the actress, it appears there are occasions when keeping her distance may be a safer option, at least when dressed in the full set costume for her terrifying Maleficent character. “There have been occasions when someone would bring a child on set and I would go to say hello to the child, totally forgetting that I was in costume!” She laughs. “I would not have considered for a moment the fact I might be terrifying this child half to death, but there I am, chatting away, and the young boy or girl would be frozen to the spot. I remember one of them turned to their parent and said, “Could you tell the witch to stop talking to me, please?” She laughs. “Things have become easier now we’re on the second Maleficent – the kids get it a bit more and are pretty cool with me. Now, I am ‘the better witch’!”. 11

Legend: John Cantwell, left, who died last year while watching an amateur football game.
Lifesaving defibrillators to be legacy to grassroots football legend EVERY local authority football pavilion across Liverpool now has a life-saving defibrillator installed - as a legacy to a grassroots football legend.
J
ohn Cantwell, 69, died in February 2018 while watching his son play football on the Joe Stone playing fields in Fazakerley. The dad-of-two, from Walton, began managing amateur football teams alongside his wife Sandra - who was secretary - when his son Phil was eight years old and playing for St Aidan’s.
12
Over the years he worked with a number of amateur Sunday league clubs from under-7s to open age - latterly St Theresa’s in Norris Green, where he was assistant manager.
Following his death, his widow Sandra and son Phil approached the city council to suggest that defibrillators should be installed at each pavilion, in addition to first aid kits. John’s family held a series of fundraising events, including taking part in the Three Peaks challenge and charity football matches, raising £6,000 to purchase seven defibrillators, which have been added to seven others owned by the city council and junior football leagues. The city council has committed to keeping the
Deputy Mayor and Cabinet member for sport, Councillor Wendy Simon said: “This is a
great example of something positive coming from the loss of a life, and we are grateful to John’s family for their help in raising funds to purchase the defibrillators.” “The issue of undiagnosed heart conditions is becoming more common and given that football is a high intensity game, it is right that we should make sure there is one in every single pavilion to be used in an emergency, whether for one of the players, coaching staff or spectators. “Thousands of people use our sports pitches every single year and there is no doubt that one of these could well save a life in the very near future.”
14 units maintained and Liverpool County FA is looking to deliver training for referees using some of the money raised.

ell I can’t start this column without mentioning the highlight of my diary for this month which has to be The Positive Awards at the Hilton – where I was delighted and in fact humbled to win the Kindness Award – I would now like to thank every single person who took the time to vote for me, as it really means so much to be amongst such incredible winners. It really does sound like a cliché but sat in that room which was just bursting with energy, listening to such amazing stories and by how remaining positive has pulled them through – it was just fantastic to be part of. Amanda Moss fresh back from LA (and looking about 17!) really made this night so special for everyone with fantastic entertainment, and a heart warming speech from one of last year’s winners Tina
S I M M O Malone who is one of the strongest people I know – this is now in its second year and already has grown as a massive event – and rightly so within the City. After a night of celebrations – it was back to work on the Saturday evening for the lovely guys at Owen Drew Candles – Drew and Mike to host their Tsarry Night Masquerade Ball at Thornton Hall. Since setting up making candles at a kitchen table – over the last 12 months these guys had already raised over £10000 at charity lunches I have hosted for them and Saturday night raised a further £5000, the room smelt and looked divine and also sat the launch of 2 new Fragrances in their Imperial Collection. Since losing my dad to lung cancer in November 2006 – I have always worked closely with the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, and whilst
hosting the Star Awards I met the lovely Rigby family who asked me to host their Golf Day at Grange Golf Club in St Helens. Simon and Andrew’s mum was diagnosed with Lung Cancer and I am delighted to say is a survivor of it and looks absolutely fantastic, they organised a superb day and I was delighted to attend in the evening and raise money once again to help with the early detection of Lung Cancer. I have also worked closely with Whiston Hospital over the years – so I am delighted to announce that I have joined the NHS as a Community Fundraiser alongside my work at the Greatest Hits Finally – I can’t not mention that I was let loose at Reminisce in Sherdley Park – and Lee Butler and his team made sure it was the best yet! From live appearances from D:Ream & Whigfield to Anton Powers, and of course Lee’s set to close the event – I’m almost counting sleeps again until next year!

LUISA ZISSMAN The entrepreneur and former runner-up in The Apprentice talks about dressage, her family of horses and ponies and training to be a jockey. How did you get into riding? I started through my primary school when I was about four years old — they would take us for riding lessons in the village. I loved it from the start and have been riding ever since. My daughter Indigo’s nursery now does riding too and it’s one of the main reasons I sent her there. It’s such an amazing sport to get into at a young age. Who was your first horse? I didn’t own my own horse until I was 15, but I had a share in a skewbald Connemara called Ronald when I was 12, so I guess he was my first really. The first I ever owned was my pony Bailey. He was recently put to sleep. I had him for 18 years and I’m still heartbroken about losing him. He taught Dixie (my eldest daughter who’s now nine) to ride. Tell us about your current horses… I have a Lusitano gelding called Curioso who is at prix st george level in dressage. He’s amazing — beautiful, elegant and he always gets placed. I’ve
18
had offers for him, but I’m hoping he’ll get to grand prix, so I’m holding on to him. I also have an Andalusian stallion called Madrono who is a bit of an Instagram star. He looks like a unicorn and everyone loves him. He’s currently at advanced medium. We also have Earl, an 11hh Welsh palomino. He belongs to my daughter Indigo — she’s nearly three. Clementine, who is one and a half, has a black Shetland called Haggis. He’s amazing with the kids and a total saint. I’m now on the hunt for Dixie’s next pony, so we’ll have another coming soon. What’s your most memorable horsey moment? Scoring 87.7% in my first ever dressage freestyle to music. It still gives me goosebumps. Do you like to go hacking? Yes, but I hate hacking on roads, so I always put the boys on the lorry and drive to the woods or gallops.
How did you come to compete in the Magnolia Cup? Goodwood asked me to race and it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I didn’t hesitate. The challenge was immense and I loved every second. I was so scared when I first sat on a racehorse, but I took it step by step, gradually going faster up the gallops, getting to know different horses. I never want to give up racing now — I’ve caught the bug. I plan to keep riding out and may even go for an amateur licence. I’d also like to buy a racehorse — we’re off to the sales in Ireland in October. I would love to have a winner at Ascot or Cheltenham. Watch this space… How did you prepare for the charity race? Lots and lots of riding. I rode around four to five times a week. On top of that I did Pilates and endless PT sessions to up my fitness. It’s been a tough road, but an amazing one. I’m probably fitter now than I’ve ever been. What do you consider the highlight of your career? Coming second on The Apprentice. Pitching for investment for one of my businesses and getting it was amazing too.

A LIGHT FESTIVAL AND EXTRAORDINARY FIREWORKS – A NEW-LOOK RIVER OF LIGHT IS BACK FOR 2019, BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!
F
rom Friday 1 to Saturday 9 November the Liverpool waterfront will be transformed with light, colour and sound as ten incredible art commissions by some of the most exciting international light artists will be on display in iconic locations across the city. In its most ambitious programme to date, the waterfront will become the must-visit selfie-spot, as each evening the artworks will transform the area into a light spectacular.
20
Details of the immersive commissions are being kept under wraps, but more details will be revealed online in the forthcoming weeks.
As part of the longer, newlook festival, the hugely successful River of Light fireworks will return for one night only on Sunday 3 November as once again the River Mersey becomes a stage for Titanium Fireworks – one of the world’s leading pyrotechnic companies.
Two simultaneous displays, from the Waterfront in Liverpool and as part of Wirral’s Borough of Culture year in New Brighton, will start at 6.30pm with a soundtrack featuring artists and songs which have been big in the city this year. All River of Light events and installations are completely free.

FAS H ION SHOPPERS ARE TAKING LIMITING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF FAST FASHION INTO THEIR OWN HANDS • • •
1 in 5 now feel guilty buying new clothes. 64% say they would now buy second hand clothing (up from 45% in 2016). A quarter of women say they don’t want to contribute to clothing waste.
A
ccording to a survey of 1,000 UK adults, released to mark the launch of Patatam.co.uk, which makes it easier than ever to buy and sell quality preloved clothing by high street brands, 1 in 4 British women are now worried about buying new clothes, due to the environmental impact of fast fashion. And this is impacting on their spending habits. Many women are now pursuing alternative, more ethical methods of getting their shopping fix – with almost 2 in 3 saying they’d happily buy second hand and preloved items, up from 45% in 2016. What’s more, 1 in 5 British women now admit to feeling guilty when purchasing new items garments, as they already own so many.
22
1 in 3 British women who say they are now conscious of the issues surrounding fast fashion, such as water wastage and unwanted clothes going to landfill. And supply is matching the demand, as an increasing number of platforms are now available to allow consumers to shop sustainably in a convenient way. The news comes in a year which has seen a growing tide rising against fast fashion practices. Only this month, activists Extinction Rebellion brought Bristol city centre to a standstill to protest the waste in the fashion industry. Eric Gagnaire, managing director at Patatam. co.uk, said: “It’s great to see British consumers becoming more conscious of the impact their shopping habits are having
on the environment. Consumers are now considering the clothes in their wardrobe in a whole new way and thinking about not only the manufacturing process and the environmental and social impact of this, but what happens when they are done wearing items.“ “We have seen an increase in shoppers wanting their clothes to have a second lease of life – whether they sell, donate or upcycle them - rather than just sending them to the landfill. This, coupled with the research, shows just how much attitudes have changed and how British women are making a move to become more conscious consumers.” Patatamis the UK’s biggest online preloved fashion retailer, providing quality women’s and children’s clothing at prices 70% less than the high street, via its website. Consumers can also sell their quality, preloved clothing directly to Patatam using its free Patabag service, with no fuss.

FARMAGGEDON – FEAR HAS RETURNED FOR 2019 If you can hear the screaming, you know you’re still alive...
N
ow in its 13th season, Farmaggedon is an award-winning interactive horror experience. Based at Farmer Ted’s it is themed with roaming zombies and creatures of the night. The park contains three interactive horror houses; a brilliantly themed zombie paintball experience and a whole host of gruesome entertainments from a live band, magicians and specialist performers. The Beast of Terror is the original mausoleum of mayhem has been constantly reinvented by Mark Edwards and his team for the delights and terrors of visitors. Now the haunted house is a mansion of trapped demonic souls, featuring a labyrinth of corridors, crypts, caverns and many of your worst nightmares. Contagion is a different experience altogether, preying on all 6 senses, flaunting phobias and leaving visitors a shadow
28
of their former self. Where vicious clowns take centre stage leaving many clinging to their loved ones for help! Enter The Meat Locker and become prey to Malachi Throne’s evil whim. An evil spirt who’s hunger for flesh knows no bounds. When visitors enter the Meat Locker they will be processed, some will be chosen, in the end everyone squeals Zombie Outlaw Paintball if it moves and it’s dead, aim for the head! Visitors are encouraged to add Zombie Outlaw the interactive paintball experience to their night of terror. Brave visitors lock and load their
paintball machines and travel around on a specially designed vehicle, like Zombie safari. VIP Fast track includes Zombie Outlaw paintball. Mark Edwards, owner of Farmaggedon, said “We can’t wait to unleash hell on our willing victims again this year.We are dedicated to giving our audiences the very best terrifying night out and we will continue to provide your nightmares for a long time to come.” www.farmaggedon.co.uk

How to Launch Your British Brand in the USA
I
f you're not on active on social media, do you even exist? Whether you're an influencer building your online reputation or you're building a brand, you're going to need to be active AF on social media. If you intend to launch your brand in the USA, you're going to need to bring your A-game! Competition is fierce, so you need to stand out from the crowd. Lifestyle editor, Amanda Moss, took her fashion brand global this month with a Lifestyle fashion showcase in Los Angeles staring moi to bring a little UK'tude to the catwalk. A slew of models paraded down the runway in ubercool British hand-painted brand, Go Gairy. I'm all about the customizable leather jacket life!! To successfully launch your brand to the U.S. market, you don't need to reinvent the wheel; you just have to follow a proven process. #1. Appoint a PR agency. Agencies like Amanda
30
Moss PR already have the contacts and insight to bring your brand to life across the pond. The right PR consultant or agency can organize the ultimate pop-up store or fashion show to launch your product or service successfully to the American market. #2. Tailor your social media. Instagram is still the number one platform of choice for the majority of brands, despite all of the recent algorithm updates. Make sure your feed tells your brand story. The majority of your possible 30 hashtags per post should be location-specific. For example, if you want to launch your brand to the Miami market, you need to use the hashtags the local businesses and your target market are using such as #miamilife #miamibloggers and #miamiinfluencers. The remainder of your hashtags should be industry-specific. If you're a fashion brand, for example, use trending hashtags like #fashion #outfitoftheday #whatiwore
and #fashiongram to direct fashionistas to your page. #3. Call in the influencers. Influencers in your niche can bring your target customers in swarms rather than trickles. Choose carefully. Any influencer you collaborate with should have a minimum engagement rate of 4% and should have a minimum of 5K followers. An influencer with 50K fake followers will do nothing for your brand. One with 5K followers and high engagement is a far more fruitful partnership. #4. Host giveaways. Build hype by hosting giveaways. Allow people to enter by reposting your content or tagging 3 friends.

The Luminelles are a female vocal group aged 14-18 based at Birkenhead High School Academy who are expanding to performing at private events…led by musical director Matt Lammin. How was it put together We were asked to put together a small group of singers for a flash mob at Liverpool John Lennon Airport in 2015. What makes you different from other choirs? We are a modern, energetic, vibrant and youthful group with the ability to adapt to all sorts of vibes, styles and atmospheres. We take pride in our creative approach and our professional sound. What do you offer? We are a versatile ensemble and can provide music for all audiences. With an eclectic mix of songs under our belt, we can cater for any occasion. We have performed at weddings, theatres, cathedrals, charity concerts, arenas and we also have an extensive Christmas repertoire.
32
What are the benefits of singing in a choir? You
are doing what you love most with like-minded people who share the same passion of music as you do. It makes what you do so much more enjoyable by having others to share it with, you make friends for life and it feels like a second family. It is so inclusive whilst you also learn so many new skills with the experience you gain. What’s the most unusual gig you’ve been booked for? Performing for visiting dignitaries as they arrived on the train at Liverpool Lime Street for Culture Liverpool’s ‘Sgt Pepper At 50’ celebrations was quite unusual, but possibly singing Hans Zimmer’s ‘Planet Earth II’ composition at the Liverpool Echo Arena in front of giant screens showing footage of whales from the series was the most unusual!
What training do you need? Most of our singers have private tuition with our musical director. Many have also completed pop vocal grades with London College of Music. How many hours a week to do practice? We meet regularly on Fridays for just an hour a week, but we have extra rehearsals prior to gigs. They will be performing at The Positive Awards on 20th September. Facebook: The Luminelles Instagram: @the_luminelles Twitter: @the_luminelles

Hello Lifestyle readers,
Fitting a Sliding Wardrobe Door
As summer has officially ended and winter has begun, my schedule is really starting to fill up and September saw the start of that busy period come into play.
Things you will need:
Laura and I were excited to open our home to a media event with Frenchchic furniture paint who I am an ambassador for. They have previously hosted media days in London, but this was their very first one in the North. Bloggers, influencers and members of the press were invited along to experience the fantastic product range the brand has to offer, take part in demos and enjoy a few glasses of bubbles. It was a great chance for us to showcase the range of Frenchic colours we have used in our own home, including in Nelly’s nursery. I also loaded up the Wagner SprayTech gun and did a few demos of my own throughout the day. And speaking of Wagner, I spent more time with them in the studio shooting filming for the Ideal World TV channel. In September, for the eighth year running, I proudly hosted the Echo Awards which celebrate Merseyside’s unsung heroes. This year’s event took place at the Rum Warehouse in the Liverpool’s iconic Titanic Hotel and I once again had the pleasure of teaming up with Jessica Fox who has been my hosting buddy for several years now. The awards ceremony was as ever an uplifting night and it was great to meet all of the inspiring winners. Laura and I rounded off the month filming for a new Channel 5 documentary – I can’t divulge any more than that, but stay tuned for more information. It’s going to be good! All the best,
C r a ig

Tape measure Workbench Drill bit and screwdriver bit 10mm screws
Fitting your wardrobe with sliding doors is great space saver. They come in all different sizes and designs from metallic-glazed mirrors to plain colours. Just give your supplier the opening measurements from left to right and top to bottom, they will then make your doors with runners attached. 1. Start by cutting your top and bottom runner rails down to size using your hacksaw blade. The runners hold the doors in place and allows them to slide on their rollers. These must both be cut to the same length to match your opening. 2. Insert a drill bit into your drill driver and create pilot holes along the runners every 250mm (10 inches). Runners are usually aluminium and can be drilled through using standard drill bits. 3. Screw the runners firmly into position through the pilot holes – you will find the bottom one has a thin runner groove in it, so it meets the runners on the bottom of the door. The top runner has two large square section channels for the left and right-hand door to slot into allowing them to slide in front and behind one another. 4. Now that your runners are fixed into place, simply lift your door into position by pushing the top into the top runner channel and then your bottom door runners should connect automatically. This sometimes can be a little tricky so it may be wise to get someone to give you a hand.

The Power Of Intention
H
umans need direction, plans, goals to live the most fulfilling life that we can. Goals are something that we all set, in different ways, but we all have them. New year, monthly, weekly, weight loss, business, fitness, the list goes on. 3months, 6 months, 12 months, 5 years, different time frames for different goals. Goals are amazing, they keep us focused, help us understand what we want, help us thrive, give us direction and help us to stay on track with what we want in life.
38
the present moment. Our thoughts, words, feelings, and actions. Intentions provide you with a road map and reminder of how to live on a day to day basis that is in alignment with the long and short term goals that you have set. Intentions are not the same as goals. Intentions are about who you are choosing to be, what actions you are choosing to take, and overall decision making. So how do you set an intention? Be clear, be specific.
Email: Themindsetmovement@hotmail.com
www.themindsetmovement.co.uk
on what you intend for yourself and your life. Release the outcome and live fully in your intentions and watch your world around you begin to change before your eyes.
But here’s the thing about goals, goals are all about the future, the up and coming, looking forward.
Who do you want to be? How do you want to act? How do you want to live? What is important to you?
INTENTION IS IN THE NOW. THE PRESENT MOMENT. THE ‘ALL THERE IS’
Get into the space of what would you be doing if those things were true for you.
So why is setting intentions important? Or even relevant in us living our lives and achieving our goals. Why isn’t just having goals enough?
Be present with your intentions, check in with them, ask yourself ‘Is what I am doing thinking and being in alignment with my intentions?
Intentions allow us to get behind the wheel of our own lives, and drive us directly to our goals. Intentions allow us the space to get out of our heads, and allows us to step into what we want to become instead of what situations we are currently in.
When we set an intention it allows you to focus on
Remain aware of your choices and decisions
Set the intention and begin driving your life, today.
You handle you – let the universe handle the rest.

The Revival of Liverpool SOUP
Liverpool SOUP got off to a strong start earlier this year raising £485 in just one night and is gearing up for more of the same on 3rd October at Tusk in the Baltic Triangle.
T
he micro-funding concept was inspired by the successes of Detroit SOUP, who (since starting in 2010) have raised almost $150,000 for local projects. Building on the achievements of the original Liverpool SOUP, which ran between 2015 and 2017, the 2019 revival looks to further cultivate the Liverpool institution of looking out for those around us and raised an amazing £485 for Croxteth Community Garden back in June. The micro-funding event brings people together from across Liverpool and showcases up to four grassroots projects who pitch their ambitions in a bid to win all the money donated on the door by the attendees.
42
And what do the people attending get in exchange for their donation? Not only do they get one vote and a bowl of soup to enjoy while they’re mulling over how to spend that vote, but they’re also learning about the inspiring projects afoot
in their community and how they can support these projects with more than just their cash. Liverpool SOUP works to bring people together to help them share resources, time and passion for the things which most strike a chord with them, the pot of cash donated to the winner is only one part of the puzzle. Liverpool SOUP work to support all applicants in their success, whether they end up pitching at an event or not, by applying to pitch applicants will be able to opt-in to a community of like-minded project organisers and receive advice and connections to help them achieve even greater successes. In the run up to our next event in October the pitchers will have the opportunity to work with AYCH to hone their pitching skills, and in addition to the cash prize, the winner of October’s Liverpool SOUP will also win a six-monthmembership with Lab by Capacity worth £900 which has been generously donated.
Any grassroots project can apply to pitch at a SOUP event providing they impact a Liverpool postcode. In the past Liverpool SOUP has seen a huge breadth of applicants from projects working to reduce food waste to those targeting men in later life who are prone to suffer social isolation. The events couldn’t be further from the Dragons Den, they work to champion all the pitchers with voters wanting to learn as much as they can about the projects rather than scrutinise them, and in the case of other SOUPs hosted around the UK organisers have found that the connections made at these events can be more valuable than the cash prize itself with members of the communities really buying in to the projects and offering their continued support.

The Happiness of Pursuit
Top performance coach and business consultancy leader. Co u l d you be an Am bi ver t? This is a new word to me, I came across it a couple of weeks ago ... and once I knew what it meant I wanted to become one. An Ambivert is a person who has a 50/50 balance of extrovert and introvert features in their personality. For me that’s the nirvana of all personality types ... someone completely in balance with their outgoing side and with their inward tendencies. In reality most people tend to have a dominant personality type and that often determines how we are seen by others. By the way, the word Ambivert is derived from ambivalence ... I didn’t get this connection straight away. I thought ambivalence is when you have mixed feelings about something ... you can’t
make your mind up about something or someone. I thought ambivalence was just another word for indecisive. Or worse still I thought it was apathy. You know, someone who doesn’t seem to care. But it turns out there are two sorts of ambivalence ... sure there is the one where you can’t make up your mind and that’s the one you definitely don’t want to be. Then there’s the other one ... the positive Ambivert. The positive Ambivert has their own opinions but they are open to hear others views as well. They are capable of putting their thoughts into words but they will often wait to hear what others say first before they speak up. The positive Ambivert will
intuitively provide balance. If someone is a talker they will be quieter and listen ... if someone seems to be quieter they will lead the conversation more. They will bring others into the conversation. We live in a world where opinions seem more polarised than ever. And the style of conversation is often more confrontational than it really needs to be. Maybe we need more Ambiverts to calm things down. Ambiverts make good leaders because they will genuinely listen and genuinely consider both viewpoints.
