Lifestyle editor's letter

September ISSUE 76 A note from our editor...

Hello lovely Lifestyle readers!

H

ello everybody, and hello new season. Of course as I write this the sun is are women wearing summer frocks,

So my excitement for the new season and all the lovely things like woolly tights and the obligatory new boots that heralds the beginning of autumn, might be a little premature. But still, my enthusiasm for the autumn/winter season has not waned a jot, for I am already, as I assume you are too, planning my look for the new season. Once again I managed to venture out into the city centre at night, a few times recently. As always Liverpool did not disappoint. I sampled chocolates and Prosecco at Hotel Chocolat, gorged on a slab of chocolate Guinness cake at Leaf, and once again danced the night away at the Attic on Parr Street. The food highlight for me, was the Punk Afternoon Tea at the Baltic Social, which, if you are yet to try yourself, I urge you to do so soon. Because nobody does mini burgers, and cocktails served in tea pots like the Baltic do. Perhaps being on a mission to experience the amazing independent reason I’m so looking forward to the cooler 4

months. As a big woolly jumper can hide a multitude of sugary sins. I also ticked a personal achievement box a few weeks ago, by abseiling 150ft down the Anglican Cathedral. The view from the top was breath taking, however my enjoyment of the landscape was a little marred by my abstract fear of my impending plummet. But still, I’m very glad I did it, and I managed to raise a tidy sum for the Food Bank in doing so. Lots of Love,

Joy x

t follows a three year campaign by The Liverpool Pals Memorial Fund to create a permanent tribute to remember the men and boys who volunteered during the Great War.

I

he Liverpool Broadband Vouchers Scheme is now open for applications and will give eligible SMEs up to £3,000 towards the capital costs of a super/ultrafast broadband connection.

The £85,000 frieze, designed by Liverpool sculptor Tom Murphy and funded through donations, was revealed by Prince Edward.

It is being implemented as part of a national drive to provide a much better service of superfast broadband.

More than 1,000 men were recruited on 31 August 1914 alone. Over 6,000 men were initially signed up in 1914 – enough soldiers to serve in four battalions and for two reserve battalions. Many were killed in action and never returned home. The memorial tells the story of the Liverpool Pals through a series of dramatic images - from their formation through to their emotional farewells when they left the city, onward to scenes from the battlefield, their return from war and the commemoration this year. That trip to the emotional garden shed back in 2012 might have allowed Kylie to take stock of her achievements to date, but 2014 has all the signs of being Kylie’s best year yet. 11

his September the city will be taken back in time to 1914 for the Merseyside First World War Commemoration, a special weekend programme of events to mark the 100 year anniversary since Britain entered in to the First World War, brought by The First World War Commemoration Task Group from Friday 12 – Sunday 14 September. Starting with a free concert at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on Friday 12 September. Where a mass choir of Song Merseyside that has been formed especially for the event, comprising of Primary Schools from 6 local authorities, will perform a special selection of songs from the WW1-era which will echo through the Cathedral. St Johns Gardens will be transformed to 1914 Merseyside on Saturday 13 September, with a series of performances, exhibitions and stalls that will demonstrate to all exactly what life was like at the time of the outbreak of the First World War. Encounter everything from Housing, Clothing, Transport, Entertainment, Public Health and Women’s Suffrage in this educational and informative experience which will give the public a fascinating insight in to life at the time. It will also explore what the Call to Arms meant to thousands of families in and around the (old) counties of Lancashire and Cheshire in this truly poignant event that will offer something for the whole family. There will also be a special guest appearance from The Band of the Grenadier Guards who will perform in the

Gardens before a full concert that evening at St Georges Hall. The Band of the Grenadier Guards, the sound which symbolises the very essence of the nation, will play a live concert filled with the music which has made them a national treasure for more than three centuries in the magnificent Great Hall at St Georges Hall, and is also a fundraiser for SSAFA, on Saturday 13 September. Concluding the weekend on Sunday 14 September is a special Drumhead Service at Exchange Flags, honouring the ceremonies that Soldiers of all faiths and beliefs received before they went off to War in 1914, and also whilst they served. A Drumhead Service has its origins in the distant past where military chaplains in the field used the drums of their Battalion or Regimental band to construct a makeshift altar, so that they could hold religious services close to where the troops were positioned. The drums were covered by either a simple cloth or a flag and topped by a simple cross.

welcome to our zoo...

A

new period drama from the BBC is set to grace our screens this month, Our Zoo. Based on the inspiring creation of, the now world famous, Chester Zoo in the 1930s. The drama follows George Mottershead’s inspiring and challenging journey as he moves his wife, two young daughters and parents - along with a monkey and a parrot - into a draughty old

group of animals, bought Oakfield Manor and seven acres of land for £3,500.

stately home. With a derelict plot of land, mounting debts, no resources or manpower

The zoo opened its doors in 1931, and in 1934, the North of England Zoological Society was born.

and a concerted campaign from the local villagers to halt George's plans entirely. It’s a race against time for the Mottersheads to build and open their zoo before the harsh winter sets in - or the bailiffs arrive.

Keeping the young zoo open through the Second World War was no mean feat. But

As most good dramas are, this too is based on real life events. Back at the turn of the twentieth century, George Mottershead 16

was taken to a zoo in Manchester. What George saw that day inspired him to create ‘a zoo without bars.’ So in 1930, George with his family and a small

George did it. With the war over, the zoo began to grow – fast. The story is told in 6 episodes starting on Wednesday 3rd September

living for the weekend

I

t has been seven years since Una Healy, Rochelle Humes, Mollie King, Frankie Sandford and Vanessa White joined forces to become The Saturdays, in the process becoming one of modern pop music’s great success stories.

22

And now, 18 smash hits later, the band are in the mood to celebrate what counts as genuine longevity in the fickle world of pop with a Greatest Hits album and nationwide arena tour.

Lifestyle Back in 2008 when the girls were first brought together, the notion of releasing a Greatest Hits album was nothing short of a dream. “It was!” Mollie begins. “That was something we dreamt of. We’ve been very lucky, we’ve worked very hard and of course the support of the fans has been there since the beginning. We wouldn’t be anywhere without them!”. Aside from killer pop songs - and there can be no denying the likes of Up and What About Us are just that – it has been The Saturdays’ incredible friendship and unity that has kept them fresh and energised in what can be an exhausting procession of work. “I think as a five-piece we work really well together,” Mollie says. “There are never really any big arguments; we understand each other, and we all have the same drive and passion. If you have your heads in the same place, it’s easier to succeed.” There have been changes in personal circumstances over the years – three of the band have become mothers and married. But the girls have learned how to juggle work and private lives well. “I don’t think any of us are that different, really,” says Una. “I’m still the same person, I’ve just lived a bit more. I still live each day as it comes. I don’t think I notice things differently.” “I think overall I’m still the same,” agrees Mollie. “I’ve learned a lot - when I joined the band I’d just turned 20, now I’m more grown up. I still worry about everything,” she laughs, “but I’ve grown up as a performer and a person… we all have.” Even in the time The Saturdays have been a fixture on the charts, the music industry has changed irreversibly. Mollie says the group are “still old-school” in signing copies of albums for fans, she admits progressing the group’s trademark sound has been important.

celebrity interview

“Yes, we’ve definitely moved along with the times. At the beginning we were straight pop. More recently we’ve become more dancey. That’s the way the times are going, and I think it’s good to show you can move along with that. You can’t be doing the same stuff you were six years ago.” Outside of the music, The Saturdays have become tabloid favourites, seizing the chance to move into other parts of light entertainment. Una hosts a TV show in Ireland, while Mollie has stepped into the fashion industry, designing a line for Oasis. “That’s another reason why we’ve lasted so long – not one of us resents any of the others doing something on the side,” says Mollie. “I love the fashion, and I’d like to get into that more as time goes on. Hopefully there’s a lot more for me to do.” But don’t take that as the beginning of the end for The Saturdays. Where Greatest Hits tours can often suggest a breakup is in the offing, Una couldn’t be more emphatic that this year’s release it is merely the closing of the latest chapter on The Saturdays’ incredible story. “We’re not splitting up!” she laughs. “It’s more about celebrating a milestone. We’re already planning our next album. It’s not the end, it’s the beginning of the next chapter!”

Warrior Women I ’d like to share with you a story of real beauty and strength.

I’ve recently been privileged to work with 6 awesome ladies I like to call my ‘Warrior Women’. Each of them has recently waged war with Cancer.

Not only have these inspirational women carried on with their daily lives, looking after children, comforting partners, holding down their jobs and battling through their treatment with a smile on their face, but they have also decided to bare all and work with Mansys Portraits and myself to create some beautiful images to tell their story, and inspire others. These images are to be used as part of a national campaign to raise awareness for cancers in young women and change they way people view the disease, and it’s lasting effects. My good friend Stacey Radcliffe (ring leader of the whole operation!) mentioned to me over a cuppa one day that she would love to set up a support group and help change not only the education of the medical 24

profession in dealing with younger cancer patients, but also the way in which the ladies themselves and their families gain support once they have had their diagnosis. I had to make it my mission to help the idea become a reality.

We have completed our trilogy with ‘fighters’ ‘warriors’ and ‘family’ themes in order to create a 2015 calendar which will raise much needed funds for the support group and to send patients and their families on much needed together time. I’m sure you will agree that Stacey, Joanne, Elaine, Beth, Kelly and Charlotte are truly inspirational, strong warrior women. If you’d like to follow our journey and find out more about how you can help, or if you’ve recently been diagnosed and want to join your fellow warriors then go to www.warriorwomen.org. uk Special thanks to Mansys Portraits, Photography by Tanya Davies, Rebecca & Paige Morgan (Morgans Hair & Beauty, Prestatyn) Shane and all the boys at Shotton

World Record Making British Bikers Return Home

culture

T

wo daring British bikers – Harry Glover and Peter Bray from Birkenhead - have returned home to Birkenhead following their epic motorcycle trek that saw them motorcycle 15,000 miles (24,000 kilometres) on mainland Europe. They travelled through 28 different countries and set a new world record for visiting 25 EU Capital cities in just one trek. The 21-day expedition took them as far north as Helsinki, as far south as Athens, to Bucharest in the East and to Lisbon in the west. Harry Glover, 49, of 4/73 Special OP Battery and Pete Bray, 58, of 22 SAS, took on the gruelling trek called ‘Triumph over Tragedy’ to promote three charities close to their hearts. The charities involved are the Armed Forces supporters BLESMA and Soldiers off the Street, along with the Alder Hey Children’s Charity. Harry Glover and Pete Bray arrived at their final city of Dublin on August 23rd, and returned back to Birkenhead, the Wirral, in the evening. Harry Glover said, “It’s been an incredible three weeks on the road and I loved visiting places such as Bratislava in Slovakia but it’s been no holiday. We as good as slept rough for all but one night as the entire trek is selffunded and we’ve had to keep an eye on our bikes. “We must thank everybody who helped us along the way, which includes strangers we met who helped service our bikes as well as family and friends.” 34

As former servicemen, Harry and Pete know all too well the dangers that soldiers face both on the battlefield and when they return home. Pete, a proud Cornishman who now lives in Birkenhead said, “This road trip has taken its toll, in more ways than one. We were shocked by the number of toll roads throughout Europe and by the number of places that don’t use Euros as a currency. As we were travelling so long – up to 18 hours on some days – we barely had time to eat, so we have both lost quite a lot of weight too. We are feeling happy but a bit more tired than usual.” Their chosen charity BLESMA provides exsoldiers with valuable help and support, giving them the tools needed to regain their independence following the loss of limbs. Another, Soldiers off the Street provides food, shelter and other support for vulnerable soldiers of all ages who have returned from active duty and are in need of assistance in getting back on their feet. The initiative has a personal note for Harry Glover, whose young daughter Elizabeth will undergo life-changing surgery in the autumn with the support of Alder Hey.

residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground caverndwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, EGGS (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by a villainous pest exterminator ARCHIBALD SNATCHER (Acadamy Award winner Ben Kingsley) who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kind-hearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and an adventurous rich girl WINNIE (Elle Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.

The Boxtrolls is released on 12th September (Advanced Previews: 6th & 7th September) at ODEON Liverpool ONE in 2D and 3D.

Holly Bell

celebrity interview Photography: David Loftus

By Joy Lewis

Holly Bell won the Great British Bake off in 2011. Her blog, Recipes From a Normal Mum is so successful that she has brought it out in hard back. It’s only been out a month and already it’s selling like hot cakes – sorry couldn’t resist! i loved watching you on the bake off, did you ever imagine making a full time career of doing what you love?

I entered the Bake Off when I was on maternity leave. I wasn't happy working in advertising as I barely saw my eldest son and didn't want the same to happen with my second baby. I hoped I'd be able to change career from entering the Bake Off but if I'm honest I was more than prepared to be knocked out at the first round and have to go back to the office job. I still find it crazy that I get paid to write recipes. I've been obsessed with food all my life so it's really a gluttons dream come true. what can you tell us about your cook book?

My book is written with the same ethos as the blog - recipes from one regular Mum for other normal Mums and Dads to use. The focus is on easy, simple and economical recipes. There's obviously less chatty stories than the blog features though. My editor was very strict about not going on too much! not everybody is an accomplished cook, are your dishes easy to replicate?

40

Oh yes. I sometimes like to make complicated recipes, usually at the weekend when the kids are off at the park with my husband. Other than that I need quick and easy solutions.

Recipes from a Normal Mum by Holly Bell (Quadrille, £20) is out now. My book is not remotely cheffy. I don't like books that suggest sourcing 30 ingredients or buying something online. I shop in a supermarket like most other folks. what made you choose these types of recipes?

I felt there wasn't a recipe book out there for people like me. I'm a Mum who likes really good food but doesn't have a crazy budget, nor do I have bags of time. That doesn't mean I want to feed my family ready meals or sandwiches every night. And I certainly don't want to compromise on flavour. Eating well shouldn't be arduous or costly in my book. where do you get your inspiration from when creating each dish?

So many places! Memories of food eaten as a child, meals out at restaurants, day dreams of flavour combinations that just sound perfect together. My eldest son is very into his food and often suggests ideas. I dream about recipes. Sometimes I wake in the night and have to jot down the idea before it's lost forever to deep slumber.

across as me,” Kerridge says. “There were no airs and graces, no pretence, and I’ve kept up that mantra since.”.

Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has gained himself a reputation as a West Country traditionalist with a passion for pub grub. “Appearing on The Great British Menu, the thing I was most proud of is that I came

Kerridge was just 18 when he entered the kitchen as a commis chef at Calcot Manor in Tetbury. Moving to London in his early 20s, he honed his skills at Odettes, Rhodes in The Square, Stephen Bull and The Capital.

Lifestyle He’s worked with all the big names in the culinary world, and credits “being in the kitchen” as paramount to his education. Today, Kerridge’s recipes, from his lasagne to his pie to his beef brisket (“with a lovely barbeque sauce”), reflect his passion for upmarket comfort food. Kerridge became head chef at Adlards in Norwich and senior sous chef at Monsieur Max in Hampton before opening his own gastro pub, The Hand and Flowers, in 2005, gaining a Michelin star just a year later – to date, it’s still the only pub in the UK to have been given two stars in the Guide. Nearly a decade on, Kerridge has become a familiar face on our telly screens. A Saturday Kitchen regular, the chef calls his double Michelin starred gastro pub his “biggest achievement.” The Gloucestershire-raised chef is all about “big, strong and robust” flavours, and calls “love” the key ingredient to any dish. “If it’s created with love then when you eat it, you’ll feel the soul that went into it - that’s the thing that makes it comforting.” With his food pleasing to the eye without being overly fussy, Kerridge is quick to champion the ‘pub grub’ movement currently taking over the UK, giving credit to this quintessentially British phenomenon. “There’s about 15 chefs now in pubs with Michelin stars, and that’s a wonderful place to be in,” he says. “It’s a great advert for British food across the world.”

I like to look to the old instead and see if we can improve on it.” “When you look at Great Britain and what it’s built around, whether it’s manufacturing, whether it’s food, whether it’s farming, it’s all solid, rustic, heart and soul and honest,” he explains. “Those are the sort of dishes that I draw inspiration from. I look for tradition and I look for history in food.” As his series Tom Kerridge’s Best Ever Dishes is returning to our screens – “It’s a continuation of the proper pub food that was such a success last year. I enjoyed working with everyone from the camera men to the director” – Kerridge alerts us to his cardinal kitchen rule. “Never cook something that you wouldn’t want to eat,” he says, sternly. For this chef, total enjoyment is paramount. “It’s alright to cook something you’ve never cooked before, and to experiment, but make sure it’s something you want to try. That love will defiantly come across in whatever you cook.” Tom Kerridge’s Best Ever Dishes airs on BBC2 this autumn.

Kerridge adds, “There are great pubs doing great food that haven’t got Michelin stars too, and their understanding of food is just fantastic.” Living up to his down-to-earth persona, he says “I‘m not trying to break down boundaries and look for something new with my dishes: 43

I had the homemade Chilli con carnie, served with BBQ beans, rice and cheese, I failed miserably to eat it all – did I mention that the portions? This may have had something to do with me ordering cheesy garlic bread to accompany, too much for me, and I have a big appetite. We also had a classic burger and the younger kids had tagliettelle carbonara and homemade goujons from the children’s menu. All the meals had plenty of fries, salads and a variety of delicious sauces.

album review

Alt J – “This Is All Yours”

A

lt J’s debut album “An Awesome Wave” is one of my favourite albums of all time, if you don’t already have this within your iTunes – please rectify this horrifying mistake immediately.

Since their first album in 2012, the gentlemen have racked up a number of awards and accolades, they have gone from a foursome to a threesome and become one of the coolest UK bands. So to their 2nd much anticipated, eagerly awaited offering of musical bonkers music, titled “This Is All Yours” to be released later this month. Admittedly, “This is All Yours” is a slow burner, but a few listens of the album in its entirety and the genius of Alt J presents itself quite clearly. The stand out tracks have already been released: 'This Is All Yours', 'Hunger Of The Pine' and 'Left Hand Free.' But my

46

By Joy Lewis

personal favourite is “The Gospel of John Hurt” which in my opinion is the best on the album. Their music has a sound that mashes indie rock with new wave electrical, with kazoos and flute melodies thrown into the mix. Granted, it’s a busy bonkers sound, but it never feels disoriented. Every track is executed perfectly with exemplary lyrics to boot. Seriously, there is nothing not to love about this stunning and commendable album.

My verdict 5/5 This is All Yours is available from September 22nd on iTunes

eptember means that the time is almost upon us once more when, like sweet rain upon the Serengeti, the returning alumni descend upon the banks of the Mersey and gather in small numbers around the cashpoints at Sainsbury’s. The annual student migration has become an inseparable and vital part of Liverpool’s nightlife.

48

Like all of the world’s great seaports and trading centres of a by-gone age, Liverpool developed as an ethnic and cultural melting pot of people and ideas from every continent. Our closest remaining link to that which made the city what it is and what it used to be, these days, are ‘the students’, and gawd bless each and

influx of youth from all over the country and the wider world serves both to enrich the diversity of our genes and the cut of our skinny jeans here in the Pool of Life. The annual marketing budget of every cheap shot merchant and Jager-bombardier, in a city which isn’t exactly short of them, has long been focused upon Fresher’s Week. But when the binges have all been regretted, the hangovers cured and the student loan facilities re-assessed, it is always those places which offer the right combination of music and people which perennially thrive and develop into our genuine clubland institutions. The three most famous, iconic and influential clubs in Liverpool’s history; the original Cavern, the original Eric’s and Cream, all benefitted immeasurably from the influence of its contemporary student population and with it the inherent willingness of the young and open-minded to embrace the new and the ‘underground’. They might infuriate barstaff and taxi drivers alike as they fumble among their loose change for the exact cost and not a penny more, but both trades know as well as anybody how important they are to the night-time economy. So, welcome scholars one and all to the City of Liverpool, and don’t forget to phone your mum occasionally.

The untold story of the Witches of Oz

ECORD-BREAKING NATIONAL TOURING PRODUCTION OPENS at the Empire 16th SEPTEMBER 2014. Experience this unforgettable, award-winning musical and discover that you’ve not been told the whole story about the Land of Oz. There is always to sides to any argument. If you think you know the Wicked Witch of the West, think again... When Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch, we only ever heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire’s outstanding novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, ingeniously and wittily re-imagined the Land of Oz, creating a parallel universe to the familiar story written by L. Frank Baum and first published as ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ in 1900. Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba. Following an encounter with The Wizard, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba’s determination to remain true 50

to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked is an amazing must see show. It has won over 90 international awards including the Olivier Award for Most Popular Show, the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Night Out and the Whatsonstage.com Award for Best West End Show and Best New Musical.

IRELAND... the emerald isle is just a heartbeat away from Liverpool. Amanda moss took her family to Belfast for the weekend, travelling on Stena...

T

he 10mins journey from my house to the port actually took an hour thanks to umpteen road closures and we were worried we wouldn't make it. But the Stena staff were prepared for this and delayed departure allowing everyone to board as planned. Taking our own car couldn't have been easier, we rolled on,parked up and headed to the seating area.there are 2 lounges, we chose the one with the kids entertainment and for the duration of the journey couldn't have been more delighted with the service. The children weren't bored at all during the 8hour crossing, with a cinema, kids entertainment including a puppet show and magic show, the time flew. The restaurant was fantastic, I give it 5 stars for hygiene, quality of food and best of all prices. We spent2 nights in Belfast, visiting the zoo and of course the city centre for shopping before enjoying another lazy day on the ferry home. A perfect weekend, highly recommended Thanks to jury's Inn Belfast for the fabulous 56 accommodation too!

Travel by ferry to Ireland from only £69 single for a car + driver. Travel on our Cairnryan to Belfast or Liverpool to Belfast routes from Britain or if you’re travelling from Wales, choose from our Holyhead to Dublin Port, Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire or Fishguard to Rosslare routes. Remember to book online for our lowest fares to Ireland.

REPAIRING LEAKY GUTTERS.

Hello Lifestyle Readers! I began this month in style at one of the most entertaining outdoor events of the summer – the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship. Each year, the Championship attracts a host of top names from sport and entertainment including Tony Jacklin CBE, Len Goodman, Jasper Carrott, Peter Shilton OBE, Sir Garfield Sobers and myself, of course! Unfortunately, my golfing skills aren’t quite up to scratch so I was in no danger of competing for the title, but it was still great fun! Once again, I made an appearance on Big Brother’s Little Bit on the Side which is always an amusing experience! I’m enjoying this current series of Celebrity Big Brother, and it’s fantastic to see that the show is still going strong after all these years! I was on the road once again with Swedish workwear specialists Blåkläder – a brand which I am an ambassador of. This time, we were in Milton Keynes, and it is always a pleasure to showcase their quality selection of products to a wide range of people. One of their major selling points is that they provide clothing and equipment for all weather conditions and for tradesmen of all kind.

Ladder Old cloths 18v cordless silicon gun External gutter repair silicon

There’s nothing more frustrating than on a rainy day than when you get a dripping leak from one of the brackets from your home’s gutters. Once you’ve identified which brackets are causing the problem, use a suitable ladder to reach the height you require. Prise the gutter away from the bracket you will find there will be a plastic clip with a rubber seal in it. Clean all the decayed rubber seal debris away using an old cloth making both the joint bracket and the gutter as clean and as dry as possible.

I’m also pleased to say that my latest property – Crain Cottage – is nearing completion. It’s always a pleasure to see months of hard work paying off and certainly gives me a great buzz!

Using your silicon gun push the nozzle deep underneath the gutter directly above the bracket squeezing out a lot of gutter silicon. Slowly start to reposition the gutter clipping the gutter back into the bracket. At this point the silicon will start to ooze out both the side of the bracket and on the outer edge of the gutter.

That’s about it from me this month my friends. I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer and that there’s plenty of warm weather still left to enjoy!

You can repeat this on the inside valley of the gutter if necessary. Leave to dry, the silicon should become dry within about 6-12 hours. Then sit tight and wait for it next to rain and check your handy work.

All the best, 58

Top tip: Make sure the silicon you purchase is an external weatherproof sealant.

LIVERPOOL AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR CREATE CHILDREN’S BOOK PROMOTING A HEALTHY, VEGAN DIET

Local writer Gill Torres and illustrator Ilan Sheady have teamed up to create The Girl Who Could See Stories, a picture book aiming to inspire young children to eat a healthy plant-based diet, free from animal products. Last month they launched a crowdfunding campaign giving them 30 days to raise £4,000 from pre-orders of the book, to secure the funds to print the first edition.

THE 201415 FOOTBALL SEASON AT ENVI Nothing brings people together like watching a big match and with the biggest HD screens in town, as well as VIP booths that boast their own private screens, absolutely nothing beats coming together to watch the match at Envi. Every Everton and Liverpool game is shown live, as well as all the vital action from the Premiership and cup competitions. Will we see you there?

For the growing number of parents opting into the lifestyle encouraged by The Girl Who Could See Stories the book will fill a gap in the market, by introducing young children to the concept of healthy, ethical living and teaching them where food comes from. Until 16th September 2014 signed, first-edition copies can be pre-ordered online. Only if the minimum amount needed to produce the book is raised will publication go ahead. If the target is not reached, no project backers will be charged. Details at: www.realmagicpublishing.com

By Joy Lewis

M

eet Rajiv, the Essex born R&B singer, is rapidly making waves on the UK music scene. After having released his single 'Catch Me If You Can' ft Mr. Arch - which featured on BBC Radio 1Xtra, TV channel AKA, Rajiv is currently working on his debut album with award-winning producer David Brant. With a Wembley Arena performance and Loveable Rogues support slot under his belt, things are looking busier than ever for Rajiv. hi rajiv, how long have you been in the music business and what or who got you into it?

Hey! I've been into music since I was a child, but have been in the business for around 5-6 years now. Both my parents were nurses, so I really got into music myself. I have been lucky enough to work with David Brant, who has worked with many famous names in the business, and he has helped make the dream a reality, however I still have so much more that I want to achieve.

Credit: David Brant www.vybrantimages.co.uk

i heard you are working on your debut album - when will it be finished?

I am. A lot of hard work has gone into the tracks so far and we have a little bit more to do. I write my own songs, but I have also had the chance to work with some great writers too. The album should be ready early 2015, as right now we are working on the music video for my new single called 'Cloud 9'. what type of music is it?

It's pop/r&b. I grew up with a lot of Motown and during my school years I was massively into the American r&b, but also punk, rock, nu metal, hip hop, etc. The new single is a dance/r&b track and I'm really looking forward to shooting the video for it.

can you tell me a little bit about you?

are you looking forward to performing at liverpool fashion week?

Well, I'm half Mauritian and half West Indian (Trinidad & Tobago) but born and raised on the border of Essex and London. I'm a little obsessed with the gym, even more obsessed with Formula 1 and I'm a keen, messy chef... but only in the privacy of my own home! I think it's safe to say that I live to eat, not eat to live. Erm, and I'm single.

I haven't performed in Liverpool yet, so this will be my debut and I cannot wait. Being an artist, I am always conscious about how I style myself, so although people will be watching me perform, I will definitely be taking note of the fashion trends and seeing what I can add to my collection.

THE GAME With his designer stubble, razor-sharp style and pearly-white grin, Anthony Head’s outward appearance belies his 60 years, but as far as new projects go, this is an actor who feels as youthful as ever.

F

irst impressions of Anthony Head are that of the quintessential English gent, not far removed from Head’s fictional – and much lauded - role as tea quaffing librarian Giles, in cult TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Behind the scenes, Head’s Englishness spills over into his undying passion for bucolic Somerset, a place he calls “one of the most beautiful counties in England.” “When I used to come back from LA, we’d be driving somewhere along the A46 and there’d be a point when I’d just wind down my window and breathe in the Somerset air,” he gushed. “It just loves all weathers and there’s something about the Mendips – the rolling Mendips – that is so stunning. There’s a real peace.”

62

Head and his partner Sarah bought a farm near Bath six years ago with some money left to them by “a dear friend of Sarah’s. ” They now have twelve horses, a few donkeys and Sarah teaches, rides and sees clients at the farm.” Anthony mucks in too though. In fact, on returning home from San Diego’s Comic-Con just last month - which he quips was “insane” - the first thing he did was to tend to the donkeys’ needs.

Lifestyle “On the way back from the airport, the driver said very sweetly ‘Well, Mr. Head, are you going to spend a couple of days putting your feet up and getting over the jetlag?’ I went and did quite the opposite! That afternoon I was down the stables mucking out the donkeys, because actors do need to be grounded. We need to shift the odd pile of poo just to remember who we are.” Born in Camden Town in 1954, Anthony Stewart Head was educated at Sunbury Grammar School and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), before earning his first acting role in the musical Godspell. He carved out his early notoriety from appearing in a series of twelve Nescafe commercials, before treading the boards in various stage shows and finally landing his famed role as Giles in Buffy back in 1997. An industrious actor who clearly lacks the propensity to sit still, Head’s career is glittered with myriad small screen and big screen gigs, from playing Geoffrey Howe in 2011’s Margaret Thatcher biopic Iron Lady, to Will’s dad in The Inbetweeners, King Uther Pendragon in Merlin and the PM in Little Britain. As a multi-faceted actor, he is forever turning his hand to new roles but for this latest one took on CGI, providing the voice for avaricious, egomaniacal footballer Flash in Juan Jose Campanella’s family foosball parable The Unbeatables. These days, his roles seem to be taking a darker turn… “I seem to be playing a few baddies at the moment!” he laughs. “What I normally try

entertainment

and do to enrich the role is think about why he’s bad, what makes him bad, what drives him. Because no one really gets out of bed and thinks ‘I’m going to be bad today’, it’s something that people become and there’s a reason they become that way; nothing is that two-dimensional or that black and white.” “You sort of look at people in middle age and think ‘what on earth got you to this point? How did you become, so angry, or so embittered?’ Quite often it’s something very small, right at an early age, that just pushed them. It may

have started off as a little acorn but it’s grown into this massive oak tree. So that’s me playing bad people. And I enjoy it, because I like the challenge of making them interesting.” So would he ever give it all up for a life toiling the land? “The thing about acting is that I’m extremely fortunate to do what I do but I do it because I’m passionate about it,” says Head, with a glint in his eye. “I just think that if it was missing from my life, I might get a little boring…”

The Unbeatables is in cinemas now.

SEAT LEON CUPRA 280 This has been designed to pinch the sales for the Golf GTI – in looks it’s very similar, has very comparable offerings in engine size and performance too. There are a few added toys tho, so you won’t get bored driving it: A dynamic chassis control (DCC) system that alters the steering, accelerator responses, suspension and even the noise. There are three standard modes (Comfort, Sport and Cupra) and an Individual setting that you can tailor to your own desires. Prices kick off from £25,695 for the 261bhp three-door Leon SC Cupra rising to £28,530 for the full-fat 276bhp five-door Leon DSG, which means the Leon Cupra is not the bargain option that Auto Express states. But it is vastly cheaper than its closest rival the Golf GTI, and initial reports suggest that the drive in the new Seat is a lot more fun to drive too.

CITROEN C1 Citroën launched the New Look C1 last month, priced from £8,245 to £11,935 - the biggest selling design called New Air scape, features a retractable roof for an open-top driving experience latest-generation petrol power plants delivering up to 74.3mpg & just 88g/km CO. And this will be the first Citroën to offer Mirror Screen technology (which is very helpful for those of us who hate parking) and for advanced smartphone connectivity (which is great for those of us who want to listen to the music on our iphone without actually having to plug our phone in) 64

This latest version of the C1 generation, has almost identical dimensions and engine size to its predecessor, but the new extremely eye catching exterior design makes it a dinky version of the very cool C3.

Range Rover Sport

SVR

The Range Rover Sport SVR made its global debut at Pebble Beach last month. It is the fastest, most powerful Land Rover ever produced and the first model to wear the SVR designation, as it has been adopted by future Land Rover and Jaguar high-performance models. And yes it is very fast, especially for such a heavy beast, accelerating from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds. A top speed electronically limited to 162mph and a N端rburgring Nordschleife lap time of 8 minutes 14 seconds - one of the fastest times ever recorded by a production SUV. I can already see it being

used in future films as THE getaway vehicle of choice. The Range Rover Sport SVR comes equipped with all the latest techno gadgets plus a twostage active exhaust featuring electronically controlled valves. The system optimises sound quality, performance and aesthetics and provides a racecar-inspired soundtrack at higher engine revs without adversely affecting refinement during steady-state driving. In other words, when driving through a tunnel, have the windows down because this is going to sound amazing. 65

Lifestyle the last word with amanda moss

hello september! I s it really autumn already? We're back to school, back to work, feeling refreshed and revitalised for the new season I hope.

We are weeks away from Liverpool Fashion Week, who would have thought that a small fashion show I was asked to put together 5 years ago would turn into an internationally recognised event on everyone's calendar. It wouldn't have happened if I was prepared to come out of my comfort zone and take a risk. Opportunities present themselves to those who are prepared to take risks. Prepare yourself for greater things and they will happen. Each day I wake excited for the opportunities that may happen As Winston Churchill said, "A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.

Sometimes I lie awake worrying about the business, the kids and "stuff", I am sure many can relate to that, but every morning I turn it into a positive and find solutions to my worries. So what's in store for September? A chance to work with new creatives in the city, an introduction to new designers , new people to work with, a new team to create. I am recruiting sales people, graphic designer and even a personal assistant as I expand into new territories. As Winston Churchill also said, "I will prepare and some day my chance will come". Stay stylish, 66
