Are you ready to take on a challenge?
Where has the year gone? Okay mostly we have viewed it through rain drenched windows interspersed with the odd afternoons of sunshine – so is it the colour grey makes time fly by quicker? Or maybe it’s because we lead such busy lives as adults that days roll into weeks and months pretty darn quick. I have a lot to do this year, and not many months left to do it in. I hate setting New Year resolutions so I don’t do that – but every year I do give myself a list of things I want to do, things I want to achieve. 2016 was no different than any other – my list was long. I love what I do, not only because I love writing but because I have managed to combine writing about lots of vastly different topics with keeping my boys at home with me while they are young. That of course stopped this month as the twins started school, and while I was buying them their uniform I realised that while I have been getting on with many of the things I wanted to achieve this year, there were still more things to do. The zip line challenge was one of those things – and a few weeks ago, me and 2 of my loveliest friends ventured to Snowdon in Wales, to scream till my lungs burned while flying over beautiful scenery. It was amazing, exhilarating, terrifying and fulfilling all rolled into one – we did not one but three zip lines that afternoon and loved every second of it – never again will I let fear stop me from doing anything. And because I did that it spurred me on to my next challenge, booking my driving test. This also terrifies me, my fear of failure in this is very real. But I have managed to overcome one fear, so why not the next? There are other things too – next month I plan on taking a paddle boarding lesson, and yes I might be rubbish but fear of falling off is no long going to stop me from giving it ago. Who knew that doing a zip line challenge with my friends would have such a profound effect on me – but it did. My challenge to you is to do something outside of your comfort zone – push your boundaries and see where it gets you. You may just have a whale of a time like I did.

House builder lovell Has gifted sHow Home furniture and accessories to children’s hospice, claire House.
going straight back into supporting Claire House Children’s Hospice. “When Lovell approached us to offer the show home furniture we were delighted. It’s great that local businesses want to proactively support us by boosting our shops’ income. The money will help to sustain the hospice and enable us to create some really precious memories for our children and their families.” To make a donation of good quality furniture to Claire House, contact Claire House Hunts Cross on 0151 486 7884.
The developer, who is about to release a brand new phase of homes at Affinity at Church Fields in Garston, wanted to make sure that furniture they no longer needed was used to support a local charity and immediately approached Claire House Children’s Hospice. The charity will sell the ‘as new’ furniture through the Claire House shop at the Hunts Cross Shopping Centre, with profits going back to the hospice. Clare Noakes, regional sales manager for Lovell in the North West, said: “We contacted Claire House as it’s a very local charity that helps so many families in the North West, and we knew that the furniture would be welcome stock for the Hunts Cross shop which is not too far away from our Garston development. “We hope the furniture will be a real boost to the shop, drawing in customers who are looking to give their own homes a makeover, while at the same time raising much needed money for the hospice.”
Located in Garston, Affinity at Church Fields is close to some great restaurants and shops, including The New Mersey Shopping Park, which boasts over 35 high street brands. It also enjoys excellent transport links to Liverpool city centre and out to surrounding towns and cities with Liverpool Parkway nearby. For more on the development, where two-bedroom homes start from £117,000, visit the development to view the Berkley show home, open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm. Zac Efron MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES By Joe Utichi
One of the most popular and accomplished actors of his generation, Zac Efron’s career stretches back to his teenage years, and began on television with small roles in the likes of FIREFLY, ER and SUMMERLAND. In MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES, Efron plays Dave Stangle. The titular Mike and Dave are brothers, warned by their family to smarten-up their hard-partying ways before their sister’s wedding in Hawaii, and to bring two respectable girls as dates. After posting an ad on Craigslist, they’re contacted by a cadre of prospective suitors, and they ultimately settle on Alice and Tatiana, whose interest in Mike and Dave extends to little more than the prospect of a free holiday on the islands. The film is based on a true story – though the real Mike and Dave sensibly decided not to bring dates from Craigslist in the end – and was written by Andrey J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, with Jake Szymanski behind the camera. It also stars Adam DeVine, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza.

ORGANIC Good thinGs happen when you Go orGanic! Going organic is easier than you’d think. Look for the logo this Organic September. Organic means higher levels of animal welfare, lower levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers and more environmentally sustainable management of the land and natural environment. Are you up for the challenge? It’s easier than you think, especially with so many producers and shops in Liverpool supporting organic food and processes, all you need to do is look for the logo. By making a small change to the weekly shop we could all help our planet by producing cleaner more environmentally produced food. Scientific evidence has shown nutritional differences in organic vegetables, fruit and cereal crops.

What’s organic? Basically it means what you see contains more of the good stuff, less of the bad. Organic means working with nature, not against it. It means higher levels of animal welfare, lower levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers and more environmentally sustainable management of the land and natural environment - this means more wildlife! Whatever you’re buying – from cotton buds to carrots – when you choose organic, you choose products that promote a better world. Going organic is easier than you’d think. Food, health, beauty and textile products that hold the Soil Association organic symbol have been produced to the highest possible animal welfare and environmental standards. Look for the logo! To sign up, get involved and search for
shops and producers in Liverpool and the surrounding area who are already working with and selling organic produce. www.soilassociation.org Top Tips for making your September Organinc Eat less, but better, organic meat. When you see the Organic logo on meat it means the very highest standards of animal welfare. Organic animals are truly free range and are reared without the routine use of drugs, antibiotics and wormers. Switch your milk to organic milk. Organic milk is naturally different, no system of farming produces mild with higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids or a healthier balance omega-6. Switch to organic beauty. Currently, there are few legal standards for organic beauty so some products may be labelled organic even if it’s not totally true. However, if it’s got the logo you can be sure that what you are putting on your body is totally organic from source. Sign up for an organic veg box. Gino D’AcAmpo to HeADline liverpool FooD AnD Drink FestivAl
A tAste of ItAly– celebrity chef Gino headinG to city food and drink festival.
Top celebrity chef, popular TV presenter and winner of ITV’s ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here’, Gino D’Acampo is to headline the popular Liverpool Food and Drink Festival this September, the event’s organisers announced today. Gino will visit the festival in Sefton Park on Sunday 18th September, where he will meet visitors, host cookery demonstrations and be interviewed about his food and television careers. Both a best-selling author and restaurateur, the father of three makes his debut at the festival, which is widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading food events, where he will talk about his traditional style of simple cookery using few ingredients, which was largely influenced by his Grandfather whilst Gino was growing up in Napoli. Coming to London aged 19 to work in a Hampstead restaurant, Gino’s early career was in the development of ready meals, working with a large UK retailer; his skill at blending oils led to appearances on UKTV Food, marking the start of his TV career. 2009 saw Gino crowned King of the Jungle in the ninth series of ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here’ and he regularly appears on ITV’s flagship programme ‘This Morning’. He has presented three series of ‘Gino’s Italian Escape’ (a fourth will be on screens this autumn) and also appears regularly as a panelist on ITV2’s ‘Celebrity Juice’. Staying true to his Italian roots, Gino often returns to the Luigi de Medici

Phil hayes Art At the CAvern Club
Local artist Phil Hayes was commissioned to create a stunning collage to represent the last six decades of music, fashion and culture at the world renowned Liverpool venue which was put on the international stage by the Fab Four.
because I have been involved in music in Liverpool all my life.
The giant montage holds particular significance for Phil, a high profile figure in the Liverpool music scene, who began creating his art works during spells of mental illness.
“I used my art work to help me through my own break downs and it was a true therapy. Now I am recovering, I am so thrilled to have been asked to specially create this unique collage to recognise the magnificent Cavern Club.
As well as celebrating the Cavern’s birthday, depicting bands and gig goers, Phil also wanted to highlight mental illness and support charities including The Samaritans to help prevent suicides. He said: “I was so proud to be asked to create this collage
230
“This will kick off the start of celebrations for 2017 but it’s also close to my heart to highlight the problem of mental illness and to try and remove the stigma.
“To me it will become part of the history of the club, showing people its history and significance in the city of Liverpool. “I hope it brings as much joy to others as it has to me.”
The Cavern, which opened in 1957, will be organising a string of events to celebrate its special birthday next year. The collage, which was seen for the first time today, will hang on display in the club throughout its birthday year.

PETEPRICE ‘LATE NIGHT CITY’ SUNDAY - THURSDAY 10PM TO 1AM RADIO CITY 2 & RADIO CITY TALK
How exciting the big changes in the Radio City Tower, we now have 4 amazing stations. Radio City is the iconic station for Liverpool with great music and Leanne and Dave at Breakfast. Radio City 2 plays ‘The Greatest Hits’ that we all grew up with, it’s my home Sun-Thurs from 10pm, and of course we have the famous Rossie with us on Breakfast. A new addition is 1) New Studio – How cool is this? We have the most amazing views across the region. 2) Tom Daley – Hasn’t this young man done so well? He really is an inspiration to all young people, and just for the record he’s a very charming young man. 3) Russell Watson – He was recently on at the Philharmonic and had a 10 min standing ovation – he has come through all his dreadful illnesses and still has a great talent. 4) Cilla & the girls – This was a night out with Kim Cattrall, Claire Sweeney, myself and the legendary Cilla Black. Can you believe it was just over a year that we lost this icon?

LIVERPOOL’S BIGGEST STAR. PETE PRICE....
Inducted Into 'The Radio Academy Hall of Fame' 2014 Radio City 3 playing ‘The Hits’ – music for the younger set. Radio City Talk is the home of Rock, Sport and Talk with Steve Hothersall at breakfast, he’s a very talented sports journalist and you can also hear my show there too. Can you believe all this is in the Radio City Tower? Why would you tune anywhere else?
5) Pirates Adventure – Entertainment is alive and well in Magaluf with one of the most exciting family shows I have seen for years. Children are spellbound with it from the moment it starts, it’s a must see 6) Ted and Rufus – Ted is the young man who won a ‘Pride of Britain’ Award. He has raised so much money to help Alder Hey which helped him. He doesn’t go anywhere without Rufus and this picture is him ringing into my show from the Wayne Rooney Testimonial Night, which some of the money went to Alder Hey and to Clare House. The Rooney’s are always giving something back to the community.

jaKe BoWNess
Meet Jake Bowness, he’s an international fashion model, musician and charity worker with World Merit. Our Editor Joy Lewis chatted with Jake to find out a bit more about Liverpool Fashion Week’s longest serving male model, and what led him to working with Wold Merit and visiting the United Nations as part of their creative team of delegates. What got you into the fashion industry? My experience in fashion has been over the last 8 years starting in London and then coming to Liverpool. I am now signed across England and Spain as a high fashion model and have been a part of the Liverpool Fashion Week team for about 6 years now as the longest (proudest!) standing male model on the team. Which instrument to you play? The guitar, my music background comes from my dad who was friends with Oasis, Paul Weller, The La’s, Digsy (the sums) and other well-known artists. After he committed suicide in 2005 I put down my guitar as it was too emotional for me to deal with 2016 I picked it back up and have played some of the best venues and events across the city. Understandably, you are very passionate about your work with World Merit, can you tell me more about this charity? World Merit is a global community of over 100,000 change makers, representing every country in the world.
34
The World Merit community is taking action to make a positive difference, both locally and globally. Together with the United Nations, World Merit focuses on tackling the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to end extreme poverty, fix climate change and get rid of inequality. Our vision is to improve our world by providing young global citizens with radically inclusive opportunities. We exist to empower youth to build a better future beyond beliefs and borders. Have you always worked with children? Yes, I was one of the youngest professionals across England working at my level of children’s services as a Lead Practitioner for the local authorities dealing predominantly with complexe mental health issues of young people and their families. I have contributed to national publishing’s, advocated to government and other public bodies such as department of health, NHS and also co-created and delivered all of Sefton’s services for young LGBTQ people before becoming an identified positive role model for the LGBTQ community. Myth of Unity is caUsing a bUzz in the MUsic indUstry, oUr editor Joy Lews had a chat with Missy b, to find oUt More aboUt the band that coULd be the next big thing.
Myth of Unity is a 3 piece ensemble consisting of Missy B on vocals, Trix delivering the rap verses, and Cali as DJ and producer, this fantastic band has performed with the likes of Labrinth, Katy B, Pixie Lott, Little Mix, Wretch 32 and Dappy, plus many more, and promises you an exceptional live show. Full of energy and originality, Myth Of Unity combine lyrical hooks with edgy rap vocals and contemporary dance music to create a dynamic and exciting sound, and are more than ready to take the music world by storm. Following the promotion of their debut Single “What U Do?“, Myth Of Unity are back with another Garage flavoured Pop banger. Entirely self-produced, this catchy, radio ready song is a proven floor filler and has already been branded as a one to watch by radio stations and blog sites worldwide. What are all your names? I’m Missy B, we have DJ Cali and rapper Trix.
How did you come up with the name Myth of Unity? Our band name could mean a million things! It can be really deep and meaningful, describing how music unites people from all over the world but in reality, it’s just a name that sounds cool. Where are you from? We all live in Blackpool but Trix is originally from Bradford. He moved here 6 years ago and now lives round the corner from us both. Lucky for us he did or we never would have met and created Myth Of Unity. What type of music do you do? We always try to make our music fresh, catchy and energetic, thats never changed! In music terms we would describe our music as a pop / garage crossover with elements of house. We try to make sure every song we write has a catchy hook and a key philosophy is to keep things simple! Sometimes when we look back at some of the songs we wrote a few years ago, it feels like there is 10 songs squeezed into one, that was a real big learning curve. On the other side of writing we love to rewrite and remix chart hits and old school bangers into the style of myth of unity and really make the song our own. Our cover sessions are currently doing really well on you tube and Facebook. Our last cover session got over half a million views! Who are your music idols? We are influenced by so many artists and groups! Some of the people we love listening to at the moment are Drake, Gwen Stefani, Craig David & Major Lazer, but we try to keep open minded and listen to everything! We love the energy that DJs like Skrillex and Diplo bring to events, and the presence on stage of artists like 2pac and Beyonce. Set to cause a buzz in the music industry, M.O.U. released their first official single ‘Hello’ last month. Available on ITunes now! NEW LUXURY SUmmER BBQ EXpERiENcE. LAUNcHES AT LiVERpOOL’S TiTANic HOTEL The Lifestyle team were invited to try the new Colonnade BBQ experience at the stunning Titanic Hotel a few weeks ago. We had never been to the Titanic Hotel before, because let’s face it, it’s a little out of the way. A short taxi ride or boat taxi from the Albert Dock is required. But boy have we been missing out on this absolutely stunning hotel, nestled like an oasis in between the glorious buildings of Liverpool’s industrial shipping past. We enjoyed the delicious BBQ while we sat outside on the hotel’s terrace which overlooks the water, and listened to the beats of the Pantasy steel pan band, as the sun set. Perfect. Do not let the location stop you from visiting this stunningly

renovated hotel, but rather revel in how lucky we are as a city to have this amazing history and the ability to sip Prosecco and rum punch while enjoying a mouth-watering menu of BBQ and Tobacco rare breed pork with courgette fries, roasted leg of lamb with pitta, and Aberdeen Angus and horseradish burgers; which are accompanied by a variety of healthy options from The Salad Hut. The al fresco dining concept, which runs throughout the summer months, is certainly one not to be missed. Start your day out on the tiles at the Titanic before catching a taxi into town. Or spend the whole evening at the Titanic Hotel, while you nibble from the salad bar and wait for your tobacco smoked pork to cook and enjoy the rum punch. Titanic Liverpool’s Colonnade BBQ food menu is £15.00 per person and will be serving from 12.00pm - 17.00pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 4th September, for both hotel guests and visitors. www.titanichotelliverpool.com

Are these the most glAmorous showgirls in the world? The Ladyboys have been wowing audiences since they first appeared at the Edinburgh Festival back in 1998, since then the show has been seen by over a million people, many of which go back time and again to get their “fix” of Ladyboy magic. The show tours the UK in its own purpose built cabaret tent, which visits the major cities across the country. Given that there are only so many places they can stay with their structure when they move from city to city, they take the opportunity to put the show into theatres for the night.
The New Brighton Floral Pavilion in November, giving you Lady Boy newbies an opportunity to see what everyone is talking about. Performed by 16 stunning showgirls - who just happen to be men - the show is sexy, funny, eye opening and thoroughly entertaining. It is East meets West, Cabaret meets spectacular West End Musical, as this party explodes into a dazzling explosion of sequins, glamour, celebration and life itself. With over 400 costumes in the space of 2 hours, this is one catwalk you won’t want to miss. But don’t take just our word for it.

MARTIN Q U I R K
OUR RESIDENT MUSIC GURU
A MAn Of Letters Even if he wasn’t already blessed with a distinctive, world class singing voice to rival Adele or Alicia Keys, and to simply blow away pretenders like Sam Smith or Michael Bubblebath, Thomas Lang would still be considered a national treasure of The People’s Republic of Liverpool for his distinctly unsung contribution to life in this city over the past twenty years or so, spent mostly away from the spotlight and the recording studio. But more of that later because the lad from Park Road, who shared a record label with Michael Jackson during the height of MJ’s global eighties mega-stardom, ‘got hammered’ on Newcastle Brown with his legendary real namesake, Tom Jones, and who toured the world constantly himself for ten years; working along the way with jazz icons like Nina Simone and Ornette Coleman, is finally back doing what he was born to do, and with what many of his old fans will be delighted to hear is probably his finest album to date.
46 2
The German Alphabet has all the same DNA as Lang and his original band’s classic debut album Scallywag Jaz; the polished production, gorgeous melodies, the power and subtlety, intimacy and sensuality, but with that solid soulful jazzy swing that held it all in place so perfectly enriched by some truly inspired arrangements, beautiful orchestration and generally spectacular production courtesy of Lang’s new creative partners Colin McKay and Allan Currie. The result is a warm and sensual hour long cinematic fantasy; a lush and loving contemporary homage to composers John Barry and Ennio Morricone, a swinging, romantic tango through late sixties cinematic cool and kitsch, with a lyrical wink here and there to Broadway and the classic American songbooks of Rodgers and Hart and Cole Porter. It swings and it bops and it finger-pops with vibrancy and a subtle humour but always at the heart of it is the unmistakable sound of a great singer who has aged like vintage cognac and whose own years now compliment perfectly the timeless maturity of his undiminished vocal power.
Thomas Lang isn’t your typical Scouse muso and is very active in the wider musical community of the city. He served on the board of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic for almost a decade and was single-handedly responsible for saving Parr Street Studios, birthplace of the first two Coldplay albums, and keeping it in the city for young musicians to have access to. He achieved this by finding exactly the right financial investors to buy the studios from the band Genesis for £1.6m. But, it was the tragic early death of a very close and heterosexual friend from AIDS in the mid-nineties which inspired Lang to take on his lifetime commitment to supporting those in Liverpool diagnosed with the HIV virus. For over twenty years now he has been a dedicated patron of Sahir House, which works to support people living with HIV and towards increasing knowledge and reducing the stigma related to the infection. Lang has organised a live major fund-raising event each year called A Celebration of Life which has taken various musical forms, from a club night with Cream to a night at The Phil with Mick Head.
The German Alphabet is released on 30th September – for more info check out : www.thomaslang.uk See Thomas Lang performing a full live concert set including tracks from The German Alphabet at The Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room on Friday 30th September, at Manchester Academy 3 on Sunday 2nd October and at London Islington O2 Academy 2 on Sunday October 9th This month’s column is dedicated to Maggie Jones (18th May 1924 to 6th February 2016) and all her children.

CRAIG PHILLIPS DIY
Hello Lifestyle Readers, I hosted the Dreamcar Event at the Croft Racing Circuit in Darlington last month which featured more than £50m of super and hypercars and gave guests the opportunity to take an exhilarating ride around the track. Also in attendance were Geordie Shore star Vicki Pattison and TV presenter Jason Bradbury, along with stars of the popular TV show Police Interceptors. Rides in the prestigious McLaren P1 GTR were also auctioned throughout the day in aid of NSPCC. It’s been a very car-filled month for me as I was also in attendance at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome for the 10th anniversary of their Supercar Event. As you can see from the picture, I thoroughly enjoyed myself! As well as offering passenger rides in supercars around the famous Top Gear track, there were a host of rides and attractions to keep visitors young and old occupied and all funds raised went to the Children’s Trust which, I’m sure you’ll know, is a very worthy cause.

Tiled external steps can sometimes be a trip hazard in wet weather conditions. A great way of making your tiled steps a lot safer in bad weather is to fit an aluminium non slip tread to the edge of them. These can be purchased from most DIY shops at various lengths and grades. Using your tape measure, measure your step transfer to your aluminium angled trim and cut to size. There are two ways of cutting these - one is by using an electric chop-saw (always use safety specs or goggles) with a metal cutting blade or by using a hand-held hacksaw. I would recommend using a chop-saw if you are doing a number of steps. If it is only one step level I would use a hacksaw. Hold the trim over the edge of the step using your pencil; mark the step through all the pre-drilled holes on the trim itself. Remove the trim, and then using your hammer action, drill with your 6mm masonry drill bit, drill into your pencil marks . Apply the 6mm plugs, place the trim back into position using 8mm screws and your drill driver, and screw the trim down so it is nice and firm. Repeat this to all screw holes. Once you are happy with the one trim that is in place, repeat this process on as many steps as you have.

NOT JUST TRAVEL NORTH WEST
Advertising is everywhere. You can’t get away from it. But to be successful in advertising you have to be memorable. Take McDonalds for example. Love or loathe their restaurants they are the experts in reinventing themselves, redesigning the layout and changing the style often. So it comes as no surprise that Not Just Travel North West is rebranding. Their new stylish logo reflects the fact that their company offer more than holidays (which, may I say, they do exceptionally well) As the name says on the website, it’s Not Just Travel, they reach out
