TOM HANKS Tom Hanks has long given up trying to convince people that he's not as nice or sweet as they might think, at least when it comes to the kinds of characters he's capable of playing on screen. In private, of course, he's warm, gracious, and humble - the polar opposite of how many movie stars behave. He also has a self-effacing, boyish quality to his manner that draws you towards him, as Liverpool Lifestyle discovers.
F
or many, Hanks is the kind of man you would like to have as a best friend or neighbour But does Tom ever tire of a ‘nice guy’ label that tends to obscure the overriding power of his performances?
6
“You can be called worse things,” the actor begins, with a hearty laugh. “I guess I can live with the idea of playing people who don’t terrorise their children or shout at waiters in a restaurant if the food is bad or the
wine sucks! I’m drawn more to playing good people, I suppose, and I’m not sure people would want to see me as a drooling villain.” Behind the pleasant facade, however, lurks a sense of quiet command
and unassailable integrity that has endeared the 62-year-old actor to legions of moviegoers for the past three decades. Those qualities are much in evidence in a succession of recent films that prove Hanks remains right at the top of his game. Last year there was The Post, the film that marked a fifth occasion whereby the actor had starred in a film directed by fellow Hollywood icon, Steven Spielberg. Previous to that there was Sully, the biopic of the aeroplane pilot who saved his passengers by landing a disabled jet in the Hudson River. Add in Captain Miller, Saving Mr Banks and Bridge of Spires – all post2013 – and Hanks’ run of unrelenting success outlasts almost any other actor of his era. He is an actor who has become inscribed into the popular imagination as our everyman, the embodiment of the ordinary man displaying grace under pressure in the face of extraordinary situations. There is something about his underlying humanity that defines him as our best version of ourselves.
Hanks certainly doesn’t seem to be fretting about this year’s projects. There’s The Greyhound, in which he plays a naval World War II officer; the much-anticipated “I mainly look for films return of Woody in Toy which have a spiritual Story 4; and a feelgood subtext and tell stories friendship ode of hope which make people think and happiness in A about life. Beautiful Day in the I think audiences trust me Neighbourhood. and I feel comfortable Indeed, Hanks credits in roles where I can Wilson for giving him play ordinary men who the peace of mind to be are faced with tough able to achieve far more decisions. as an actor than he ever “The funny this is, you imagined. never really know what “What is there to fear?” the great roles are,” he says. “I’m one of those Hanks admits. “This is guys who needs a strong an art. And the art of woman at my side. Rita’s being an actor is based picked me up off the floor in recreating a behaviour many times and she’s that is not your own. been the one who’s given Now, granted, I usually me a sense of security sound like I do, and I which enables me to do usually have the same my thing. haircut - the most you can do is put on different “People are fragile in general; actors especially clothes.” so!” “I’m a good actor, but I’m not a particularly brilliant individual and I wouldn’t want anybody to think that I think that I’m better than anyone else... that’s why I don’t think celebrities are deserving of all the idolatry that comes with the territory. I never try to play up to that fiction.” “I would like to believe that people identify with a lot of the characters I’ve played and the kinds of struggles they face,” nods Hanks.

We were given the A LA Carte menu. For starters I chose the Truffled Orzo Pasta which was out of this world, oozing in garlic and auteurs grilled mushrooms and a truffle sauce. Delectable. Simon chose the Duck liver parfait, which was rich and flavoursome. For mains I had roast salmon fillet with sprouting broccoli, smoked almonds and a herb and crust sauce on the side. Simon chose the Seabass which was served like a rack of ribs, easy to debone and ever so tasty. Our eyes were drawn to the huge choice of side dishes and we ordered creamed spinach and roasted pine nuts with grated parmesan, thick cut
chips which were a little over salted for my taste, and peas, sugar snaps and baby shoots. The portion sizes were usually generous and we couldn’t finish, as we had to leave some room for dessert. I had the best dessert I have had in forever. A dark chocolate cappuccino cake. Yum. It was the most delicious lunch and I soaked in the sumptuous decor as well. So much to look at, a great place to people watch and an even better place for something to eat. It was an absolute treat and the last time I experience such 5 star service was when I was a guest on the QE2. An absolute treat and well worth a visit.

Red Dog Saloon has launched the ‘Whole Hog Sundays’ feasting menu ‘Austin by way of Brooklyn, served with a side of Nashville for good measure’, Red Dog Saloon was created as an antidote to commonly found dry, unloved and unskilled ‘que. Hickory-smoked on Red Dog’s awardwinning fire pits, the star of the whole hog show is the Blythburgh Farm pig.
The ‘real free-range pork’ from Suffolk was chosen to produce the highest quality barbeque in town. Minimally seasoned to let the meat do the talking, the whole hog is cooked to perfection over hickory wood for over 16 hours – revealing a succulent, coral interior within a crispy, earthy brown top.
The whole hog is split into chopped pork, sausages and ribs teamed with a selection classic sides, from potato salad and coleslaw to macaroni cheese and creamed corn. These mainstays are joined by bread, pickles and a Carolina sauce – a traditional blend of apple cider vinegar, hot sauce, spices and ketchup. It will be fired-up on a pit within Red Dog’s terraces all day every Sunday and is £17.50 per person, with no minimum number needed to order. Liverpool PART TWO! Now extended to 3 days. Our vision is to make Comic Con Liverpool the biggest convention in the UK and we are making steady progress achieving that goal. We want to bring the biggest stars right here to Liverpool.
THE FIRST EVER COMIC CON COMES TO LIVERPOOL IN MARCH 2018 2018 was a big year for Monopoly Events, we put on so many shows in a short space of time which was a real stretch on our resources, but we delivered. The first ever Comic Con Liverpool in March 2018 was an amazing achievement and one which I am very proud of, especially as we only had 8 weeks to do it in. We not only managed to bring Liverpool a new Comic Con, but brought the content which the fans wanted, with bigger line ups and more to do. 15,000 people attended, and this year we will look to surpass that figure. If that was not enough, In October we set up a brand-
new event “For the Love of Horror” which saw us cross a scare attraction and a horror con. The event was a huge success and will now be a set fixture in our calendar at Bowlers, Manchester the third week in October annually. An even bigger test last year was our first ever event at The EICC in Edinburgh, when Comic Con Scotland hit the headlines in a massive way. Our last event of last year also drew fantastic reviews, where it all started for me, “For the Love of Sci-Fi”. We drew the curtain on 2018 with a grand finale. So, onto 2019 and our first event of the year, the long-awaited Comic Con
Once again, we have some fantastic guests for you, some of whom have never appeared in the UK before. On from here we will be seeing none other than The Undertaker in his first ever appearance outside of WWE at our brand-new event “For the Love of Wrestling” in April, alongside Hall of Famers Bret Hart, Ric Flair and many more. Leading on from there we will be giving you the first Comic Con Manchester, Comic Con Scotland as well as many other fantastic events, all put together by the fans for the fans. 2019 really does promise to be an amazing year for us, and I am delighted to be leading my team at Monopoly Events into a fantastic schedule throughout 2019! But now its time to enjoy Comic Con Liverpool!
WIN 4 TICKETS TO SEE COMIC CON IN LIVERPOOL!
All you need to do it email editor@lifestylemonthly.co.uk with the words COMIC CON in the subject box by the 5th March. The winner will be notifed by email on the 6th March.

You have done so much in such a short time, what’s your secret? I’ve just developed a really strong work ethic and I’m always looking for opportunities.
Lifestyle catches up with rising star, the singer songwriter, Cal Ruddy, 24, from New Brighton What was the moment that defined you as a singer? I’d say going live on Channel 5 News in November. That was my first national TV appearance. That was incredible exposure for me and such a cool experience. My social media went wild haha What’s your favourite gig to date? My first US gig in Nashville,TN at The Millenium Maxwell House Hotel in 2017 was really special. The crowd really loved my songs and my sound. I’ve got brilliant memories of that night.
18
How did you get into singing? When I was 15 I started teaching myself how to play guitar and then shortly
after I discovered I could sing. By the time I was 16 I was writing my first few songs and in November 2011 I played my first gig in ( the now closed Vanilla Lounge in Hoylake) after that I started going to open mic nights across Merseyside and it went from there. Why did you decide to donate 10% of your album profits to Autism together? It’s a charity and cause close to my heart as I have Aspergers Syndrome. I want to make a difference to people’s lives and raise some money to help out. I also think it’s important to show people that just because you have a diagnosis of Aspergers or Autism it doesn’t mean you can’t follow your dreams.
What’s your dream? I just want to be as successful as I can be in music. I’m making progress all the time and I’m constantly growing as a songwriter, performer and musician. I want to play on the biggest stages that I possibly can. Do you prefer songwriting or performing? I love the songwriting process but I get such a big buzz from performing live. I love it so much and I always will. Seeing people interact with me and my songs is such a cool feeling! What motivates you? Like minded and positive people, a desire for success, a lot of coffee and all the brilliant people that support me. Sending so much love and thanks to all my supporters. FITN E S S ‘Spring’ into action with a Personal Trainer From assisting your first step into fitness to overcoming a training plateau there are many ways a Personal Trainer can help you achieve your health and fitness goals. Here are 5 reasons why working with a Personal Trainer will be the best investment you make. Motivation It can be hard to maintain a social life, balance a full-time job & find time for yourself. As a result, the gym is often seen as a chore rather than something enjoyable. By investing in a Personal Trainer, they will work with your schedule to create an exercise regime that fits around you. They will plan the session and explain how each session will work towards the goals you have in mind. From knowing how to achieve your goal, it will be the motivation you need to kick start a fitter, healthier life.
Confidence Do you feel too intimidated to approach the weights area? Having a Personal Trainer will not only show you the correct form and build up your knowledge of exercises they can also teach you tactics to overcome your gym fears so that you will feel confident enough to conquer your fitness goals on your own. 22
Goal Setting You may already be in a routine of regularly attending the gym but maybe you want to train for a marathon, or you have aesthetic goals that you don't know how to reach. A Personal Trainer will discuss your goal and realistically break it down into something which is achievable and manageable. This could be anything from tracking your food intake to mixing up your current gym routine.
Technique You may have found yourself in the gym wondering if you're doing an exercise correctly. This is where a Personal Trainer can come in handy as they can break down each exercise into parts so that you can maximise the impact of every session and minimize the risk of injury. Mastering an exercise can take time, and there might be barriers such as previous injuries or imbalances in the body. However, with the help of a Personal Trainer, you will be able to work through these and be on your way to mastering the correct form.
Plateau Do you feel like you've reached your optimal fitness level and can't be pushed any further? Have you hit a brick wall with your training and don't know where to go next? A Personal Trainer will do a series of fitness tests from 1RM to cardiovascular tests to see where you're at. A lot of the time you will find you have just got comfortable with your training and you need to be pushed outside your comfort zone. You are capable of more than you know!
When investing in a Personal Trainer, do your research. Have a look at how they train clients in your gym, browse through their social media and schedule in a free taster PT session. Maximize the consultation and ask questions about how they would help you. Not all Personal Trainers are created equal and it's worth spending the time to find one for you.

It’s always an absolute pleasure to work with Lee not only as he is a close friend, but I have watched how he has turned the Epstein theatre around with his pantos , bringing so many big names and also producing stars from local talent. I don’t think there is anyone in this cIty who has done more than Lee for audiences. It may be spring but I finally managed a Christmas lunch almost 2 months late with breakfast producer Alex Toal and Radio City’s Scott Hughes .. 2 of the nicest people in radio and in life in general! We chose Hickorys in Southport and honestly, it was America on a plate. Putting it my diary as the place to go for a margarita & fajita night with the girls. Hoping that by the time next month comes around my hangover from the Lifestyle awards will have eased ha ha.

he upmarket bespoke hand painted jacket designer has unleashed its canine collection, catering for the dogs of discernible taste. Top dogs who deserve more than just a cheap bone can be treated to a functional hand painted leather or vegan friendly jacket designed to match their fashion-conscious owners with prices ranging from £125-£150 per jacket. The jackets can be personalised with their names as well. With the pet fashion market expanding year on year, today’s pets are as stylish as ever. Richard Gair, owner of UK brand GoGairy Hand Painted Leathers,

said; “People are spending more on their pets than themselves these days and realistically speaking, pets are just an extension of themselves. People like to dress their dogs like themselves, and we can design pooch jackets to match their owners’ individual taste so they can step out in style together. It’s important for someone to feel great when they’re taking their dog out. He added, “It’s just as important for them to be seen to be stylish with their dog.” The process of designing a doggy jacket is very personal. The jacket is made to measure, the artwork is designed by the owner and with a personal consultation with GoGairy

MACHESTER AIRPORT
M
anchester Airport plans to be the first major UK airport to open a private terminal, which offers passengers a “private jet experience” while flying on commercial airlines. The new terminal will be called PremiAir. The PremiAir experience will be available to purchase for passengers irrespective of class of travel or the destination they are flying to – and prices start at £50. Passengers using PremiAir to depart from Manchester Airport will kick-off their journey in style, with a range of special services. They include: a personalised welcome, speedy baggage processing, an elegant lounge with complimentary food and drink, and a dedicated security channel. They will then be driven straight to their plane in a private car transfer. The new PremiAir terminal is situated away from the
existing terminals, just two minutes’ drive from the M56. Secure parking will be available for those who drive to the facility. As well as easy road access, passengers using PremiAir will benefit from reduced walking distances, as the total walking distance from arriving at the terminal to the aircraft door will be under 20 metres (65 feet). Construction work is now underway on a site next to the Runway Visitor Park, where the new terminal will be sited. The existing Runway Visitor Park buildings will not be changed. The facility is due to open in mid-2019. The £1bn transformation of the UK’s third largest gateway continues at pace,
Andrew Cowan, CEO, Manchester Airport, said: “It is an exciting period in the history of Manchester Airport, as we continue to add new routes and deliver the largest investment we have ever made in our facilities. “PremiAir will add another dimension to that, giving all of our customers the opportunity to tailor the airport experience to their own personal preferences,
adding a touch of luxury for our customers.”

S P R I N G You know those key moments in business? The ones you can plan for, not the unexpected ones ... well, it’s almost the end of the financial year so it’s probably time to think about a bit of spring cleaning.
C L E A N I thought it was a sound investment ... then I find out that someone has invented a multi-surface cleaner that does the job of them all. Well, mild panic spread when I found this out.
I’ve only got involved with the ‘real’ spring cleaning in my own house once ... and it’s complicated. Did you know there’s special stuff to make your sink shiny ... which is different from the ‘power and shine’ stuff that contains orange oil, yes really..
Everything is complicated nowadays and housekeeping your business processes needs some thinking time too ... sometimes a bit of a review allows you to streamline your business practices ... maybe chuck out an old process ... or possibly bring back an old process.
I’ve bought every type of cleaner known to man and
Yes, I said bring back an old process ... what if your
new one is over-engineered and way too complicated ... is too unwieldy ... too admin heavy ... not customer friendly. What if the old process worked better? If all the new stuff is right for your business then embrace it, make it work for you and enjoy it. but if soap and water still does the job then maybe you stick with that. At least spend some time looking at what works and what doesn’t, it could make your working day easier in the long run.

EMMA PRIVILEGE Today, I am a mindset transformation coach. I help tens of thousands of people to transform their mindset and help them live a better life. I coach people how to up level themselves, to be more confident, change their lives and go after their goals but most importantly how to step out of their mind and into creating a life they love and they control.
There’s no way out so what’s the point in trying.
A few years ago my situation was very different to what it is today.
The truth is…we don’t have to accept anything; we can say that this isn’t for us and we are going to take control.
Broken, hopeless, beaten, unambitious, nothing for me..Is this what life is supposed to be like? I found myself at 3am wondering if I had come through all I had in my life to still end up in the same place. My husband was in a work related incident and he had taken months off work with a serious back injury which left us in debt, arrears and bailiffs knocking at the door. When it seems like there’s ‘no way out’ we convince ourselves of just that. Bury our heads in the sand. Pretend it’s not happening.
If you give it no attention then one day it will just go away, right? Although, it doesn’t. We are conditioned to believe that if something is happening to us that we have to just work through whatever life throws.
We can choose and create out own reality, thoughts, feelings and beliefs. I work with clients on realising that there is more for every single person in this world, situation isn’t important. Whats important is that you realise that you want more and you’re ready to go and get it.
I work with corporate businesses to help them deal with work related stress, and motivation. I am also partnered with #NoMoreKnives campaign in tackling the issue of knive crime in liverpool. I deal with minds. I deal with energy. If you knew how powerful your mind was you wouldn’t waste another second of your life waiting and accepting. More begins in the mind, change begins in the mind, transformation begins with the mind.
I work with children in growing their mindset whilst they are so open and susceptible.

EATING LUNCH AT YOUR DESK CAN MAKE YOU OBESE
W
hen you’re under pressure at work, eating lunch at your desk seems like a productive way to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. However, taking a break from your desk is essential in restoring energy levels and of course overall wellbeing. Not to mention better for our waistlines too. A recent American study of 5,000 employees, found that those who ate regularly at their desks were more likely to be obese. Many underestimate the benefits of a break from your desk. It’s time to recharge, enabling you to be more productive when you return to your desk, reducing the chance of stress and burnout. It’s essential that managers set a precedent for their employees, creating a workplace culture where staff feel comfortable to leave their desk for lunch. CABA has offered its tips on how to combat employees regularly missing out on a lunch break and how to promote the importance of stepping away from the screen. 42
1. Lead by example If your employees see you working through lunch, they may feel like this is expected of them too. Make a point of letting your team know it’s okay and expected that they take a lunch break 2. Encourage team lunches A great opportunity for your team to get to know each other away from the desk and work chatter. Suggest a team lunch every week or in the summer, make the most of the warmer weather and take a picnic outside
3. Create a designated dining and downtime area We’re not suggesting you create a canteen but just an area that invites colleagues to take a break. This could include a picnic bench, or table and chairs, soft lighting, comfy chairs and things that provide distractions from phones and screens such as magazines and newspapers. Encourage your employees to relax away from the glaring screen of a monitor or laptops

ON TOU R The UK’s ultimate Michael Jackson tribute – comes to Liverpool and Manchester on its 2019 tour this Spring. 2019 marks 10 years since the death of Michael Jackson and Ben Bowman is embarking on a UK tour with more than 40 dates celebrating the life and work of arguably one of the most popular and influential entertainers in the world. Ben, who not only looks and sounds like Michael Jackson, has honed his routine so impeccably that audiences believe they are watching the original star. Ben was just eight-yearsold when he saw his musical hero live in concert. Already a devoted fan, the experience was to seal his fate as he embarked on a life-long career as a tribute artist to the star. And 25 years later, Ben is in demand across the world for his shows which have been hailed as the most 46
exciting tribute of the King of Pop to have ever toured UK theatres. With an incredible live band, stunning costumes, iconic dance routines and of course, the inimitable Ben, the show delivers the most authentic, lively and powerful recreation of the iconic superstar that audiences will see anywhere. Speaking about the show and his hero, Ben said: “I was always enchanted by how people reacted to Michael, the way they screamed and became hysterical. I love that we, as a team, are able to provoke that kind of reaction from a crowd. I love the screaming crying girls! They're my favourite! “I feel so honoured to have been able to use my talent here on earth to channel
Michael's legacy and I will do it for as long as I possibly can in homage to him making me the person I am today.” Michael Starring Ben features not only the greatest hits of Michael Jackson but also The Jackson 5. The show includes Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean, Man In The Mirror and many more. Michael Starring Ben brings together a fresh blend mixing elements of Jackson’s own stage shows with exciting new arrangements combined with a stunning light show to create the perfect celebration of Michael and his music. Live show Michael starring Ben visits Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on 8 Much and New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion Theatre on Thursday March 28.

Y I D ly th n o M ’ s p li il h P ig a r C Welc ome Lifes tyle Read ers.. . Hello Lifestyle readers, As February was the month of Laura’s due date, we put a huge push on getting key rooms in the Dream Build completed so we all had somewhere to relax. Top of our priority list was our little girl’s nursery and we were both really excited to film the room makeover using Frenchchic paint, Silverline Tools and Wagner. Now, baby Phillips has a beautiful pink room and myself and Laura have a space to spend time with her. February also saw me invited along to another radio day on behalf of Direct Line. This time, it was to discuss a recent study that found toddlers cause 3.6bn of damage in households across the UK. I was onhand to give my advice on how parents can babyproof their houses and the ways in which I will be babyproofing the dream build. I had the pleasure of attending a Eurocell demo day in Chester. Any of you that have
been following the column will know that Eurocell have been kindly supplying all the windows for the Dream Build. I’m so grateful and the store opening was a great way for me to give back to them. As I write this, there is still no sign of baby Phillips, but the hospital bag is on stand-by and we are ready to go. We are both itching to meet her now and officially become parents. I also want to take this chance though to give a shout out to Laura. She has been amazing throughout the entire pregnancy and I couldn’t admire her any more – she was even still going to the gym in the lead up to her due date! I look forward to giving you all lots of baby updates next month, but while you wait why not get some DIY done with my monthly tip.

All the best,
Craig ’s Montlh y Tip Fitting vents in kitchen unit plinths for airflow to electric white goods
Look closely at your existing fitted kitchen. Now, look even closer below the white goods (e.g. fridge, freezer, washing machine etc). Are there any ventilation grids? If not, there should be! Most manufacturers of white goods recommend having cross-flow ventilation at the base of these, to validate full warranties to their items. For just a couple of pounds you can buy and fit your own vents in place, which could save you hundreds in the long run. Remove plinths and mark up where you require your vents to be. Using a drill, drill four holes in each corner on your pencil marks, this will allow you to get the jigsaw blade through the plinth and start cutting out the hole to fit the vent. Slide the vent into position and either screw to fix or just silicon down. Then simply re-fit the plinth into its existing position.
