Lifestyle EDITOR'S LETTER
june ISSUE 75
A note from our editor...
Hello lovely Lifestyle readers! This year seems to be flying by in a nanosecond, don’t you think? Already we are in the full throws of summer, with all the lovely things that the warmer weather brings; cute flip flops, outdoor eating, late light nights and music festivals. Not forgetting the occasional cheeky glass of afternoon Pimms – because it would be rude not to, sweetie darling. I’m especially looking forward to the Fashion and Beauty awards this July, which are being held on Saturday 12th at the Crowne Plaza. My frock is chosen, and it is suitably FAB – have you got yours? This month I am crazy about the latest festival styles for both hair and clothes. I’ve even fallen a little bit in lust with the Dr Martens Jocelyn flower shoes in tan, and the Barry M genie lipstick, see both on our We Love page.
4
So what has this issue of Lifestyle got in store for you? It is jam packed with the latest must have shopping and style advice, with tips on festival style from Jameela Jamil and festival hair advice from Paul Mitchell. We also have a huge section promoting the some of the best secondary schools and colleges in Merseyside. We have interviews with the amazing Example, supremely talented Sam Smith, dog trainer Victoria Stilwell and fashion writer and blogger Simon Glazin. Plus our usual pages on travel, food, going out, and property.
Good luck to all the lovely ladies that are taking part in the Race for Life this month, last year was my first run and I had an absolute blast. Don’t worry if your training hasn’t gone to plan, it really doesn’t matter if you run, jog, skip or cartwheel over the finish line, it’s the taking part that counts. See you there! Lots of love,
Joy x

Lifestyle WHAT'S ON MEMORIES OF AUGUST 1914 In the Footsteps of Giants This July as part of the First World War Centenary Commemorations the Giants will be returning to Liverpool
A
ugust 2014 marks the centenary of the start of the First World War – a turning point in world history. In collaboration with 14-18 NOW, Liverpool will be hosting one of the UK's landmark commemorative events - a poignant and spectacular piece of street theatre which will once again see giant visitors embark on an emotional journey around the city. Taking place 23-27 July 2014, our city will be welcoming back the creative tour de force that is Royal De Luxe who will undoubtedly, just like their last visits, deliver a jaw-dropping visual feast for all. The action kicks off at 11am on the Friday as the Little Girl Giant and her playful canine Xolo (pronounced cholow) wake up outside the entrance to the Queensway Tunnel and begin their exploration of the city. Meanwhile, the Grandmother, who will have spent the previous two days asleep in the magnificent surroundings of the Great Hall in St George’s Hall, will wake from her slumber outside the Hall (opposite Lime Street) and will set off in search of the youngster and her pet.
8
The three giants will be reunited in Newsham Park around 8pm. During the event the routes will take in various landmarks including William Brown Street, the Town Hall, the World Heritage Waterfront, the Chinese Arch, the Metropolitan and the Anglican Cathedrals, Newsham Park and Canning Dock. The culmination of the three days will see the giants sail away on the River Mersey. Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said “Liverpool is at the heart of the story – to be able to hear the stories of our elderly community really is a privilege. Their family memories recalling such a turningpoint in world history will be both fascinating and moving for everyone involved.”

Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW
VICTORIA STILWELL
“Positive training really encourages the dog to learn, to think...”
The enigmatic presenter of It’s Me or the Dog, and an advocate of positive-reinforcement dog training, Victoria Stilwell is an expert in all things canine. We spoke to the long-time trainer about channelling doggy behaviour, and the prevalence of dog bites in the UK.
G
rowing up, Victoria Stilwell had two passions – acting and dogs. Opting to walk dogs as her “survival job” inbetween university and drama school, one passion eclipsed the other.
12
“As a dog sitter my business grew very quickly and I became fascinated in the ways dogs learn and our amazing relationship with them. I studied, worked, volunteered in various rescue shelters and became a certified dog trainer.”
Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW Crediting her background in acting with making her a “good observer” and “sensitive to environment”, Victoria has since domesticated hordes of hounds, and hosted the ever popular It’s Me or the Dog, curtailing the troublesome behaviour of unruly dogs. Through her investigations, Victoria has found that the majority of canine behavioural problems stem from insecurity issues. She is quick to address the differences between her method of positive-reinforcement training, and the detrimental effects of dominance training. “Positive training really encourages the dog to learn, to think, to problem solve and make choices. It may sound bizarre that a dog can make choices, but they can.” “You find whatever motivates the dog, be it praise, play, toys, treats. If a dog shows behaviour we don’t want we use redirection. That could be a time out, removal of the treat, we use that to guide the dog into making the right choices, so there is no physical punishment, there’s no shouting, no scaring. You’re helping the dog to cope in a domestic environment by being positive rather than punitive.” “I do believe there’s loads of different ways you can train under the principles of humane positive training but the wrong way is domination and intimation. Scientists have proven to us time and time again about the harm that does to dogs.” “There’s the myth that the tougher the dog, the bigger the dog, the more dominant you have to be to get that dog to submit and behave. But actually that couldn’t be further from the truth, because poor behaviour stems from
fear and insecurity. And that manifests itself. So dominating that dog, making it fearful, actually makes that dog more insecure.” “What punishment does is supress behaviour, not change it. You make it more insecure but you don’t change the way the dog feels about a perceived environment or person. Now you’ve got a dog whose behaviour is supressed. This is extremely dangerous because one day that behaviour is going to re-emerge even worse.” With more column inches than ever dedicated to young children with grievous dog bites, Victoria encourages would-be parents to introduce the idea of a new baby into the house before it arrives. “There are so many things you can do to prepare your home for a new baby. It starts months before the baby arrives: mix up schedules, play the cries of a baby, hold a pretend baby in your arms, integrate new smells, like nappies.” But even then, a household comprising young children and dogs is not always possible. “Here’s the reality. Some dogs just cannot cope with a new child and in that case it’s much safer for both if the dog is rehomed. If you notice any outward signals, if the dog is always turning its back on the child, or growling, or suffering from depression, and if a good trainer comes in and the behaviour can’t be turned, then you need to be open to rehoming that dog for the safety of all your family.” Reminding us that “a dog can bite in and out three times in one second”, and with three doggy based books behind her, Victoria is clearly an authority on the subject.

CAT CRAZY
Lifestyle PETS
More than one third of British cat owners use Skype and Facetime to stay in touch with their feline pets
M
ore than one third of British cat owners use Skype and Facetime to stay in touch with their feline pets, according to research revealed recently, and half of the UK’s moggy mates say they’d rather spend time with their cat than with another human being. And the myth of the crazy cat lady has been smashed, as it’s men who spend more time than women on the phone to their cat just so they can hear their beloved pet purr (23 per cent). The poll of over 1,000 cat owners (aged 1880,) conducted by card retailer Hallmark to mark the launch of its new Little Meowgreetings card range,
14
found that the nation’s kitties are living far from a dog’s life with more than 20 per cent being taken on family holidays and 15 per cent of owners confessing to serving their cat speciallymade meals on a daily basis. American film star Angelina Jolie was crowned the biggest cat-a-like with almost 70 per cent of owners claiming that their cat is like the actress, “sexy, sinuous and just a little bit dangerous”. What’s more, nearly 37 per cent of men have tried to teach their cat to perform tricks, with 11 per cent of them saying their cat can do so many special stunts they could enter them on Britain’s Got Talent.
The report also found that almost 30 per cent of women and nearly 18 per cent of men deem their feline a fully-fledged member of the family, celebrating their cat’s birthday with a card or present. And the reasoning behind why men with a cat choose the moggy over any other pet proved intriguing; nearly 12 per cent of men said since they couldn’t have a lion or a tiger, they’d have a cat as they were the next best thing.

Hi, we’re Joel and Lorna from Heart. We’re part of your new radio station now broadcasting across the North West on 105.4fm, digital and also online at heart.co.uk Michael Jackson, Madonna and Take That Hi, we’re Joel and Lorna from Heart! We’re part of your new radio station now broadcasting across the North West on 105.4FM, DAB digital radio, online at heart.co.uk and on the Heart app. I’m Joel… I’ve been away from the North West for a few years but it’s great to be back living here with Vince my cat. People always tell me I look like Dale Winton... but I can’t see it myself! And in my spare time, I love a cheeky glass of red with my friends. I’m Lorna… and I live in Wilmslow with Dennis my dog. I love going to the gym and running on a nice spring day with Dennis, but I’ve got a huge sweet tooth. If you offer me Haribo, I won’t be able to say no! It’s our job to wake you up every weekday morning from 6 with loads of brilliant music from the likes of Olly Murs, Pharrell, 16
and hopefully put a smile on your face! We’ll also keep you up-to-date with all the latest traffic and travel info, so you can avoid those annoying traffic jams. Since we started in May, we’ve had loads of big celebrities on the show with us including Robbie Williams, Louis Walsh and Ant and Dec. Robbie even helped us with a surprise proposal! We asked him to propose to a great girl called Louise from Wigan on behalf of her fiancé Kev… and she said yes. We also embarrassed Ant and Dec by playing them their old PJ and Duncan song ‘Eternal Love’! They PROMISED us that they WON’T be performing it when their ‘Saturday Night Takeaway on Tour’ show comes to the Echo Arena in August. You can check out all our interviews and the highlights from our show on heart.co.uk, where we update our blog every day to keep you up-to-speed with everything we’ve been up to. There are also some amazing competitions on there - including your opportunity to win holidays and tickets to some of the biggest gigs in the North West. Make sure you tune your radio to Heart on 105.4FM, digital radio and on the Heart app to hear the best variety of music (and us two!) every weekday morning from 6.

T
For this year NEWA will be hosting it's first British Wildlife in Art Award, and up to 40 finalists will be on show alongside the main exhibition. NEWA has long given awards for excellence in 2D and 3D artworks, with prizes donated by companies such as Daler Rowney, Great Art and Focus Optics, but this is it's biggest prize ever, with £1500 going to the winner. Entries have been pouring in, featuring all manner of British birds, bugs and other wildlife in it's natural environment, from all over the country.
‘Blackberry Time’ by Steve Burgess
here will be a stunning new look to the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art (NEWA) when it opens to the public on Friday 18th July at Gordale, on the Wirral.
In all, there will be well over 400 paintings and sculptures on display at Gordale this summer. This will be NEWA's tenth year at the award winning garden centre. The location was chosen for the beautiful natural lighting in a gallery space large enough to allow the artworks to breathe and to shine. The final weekend 18

This informality gives the exhibition a special ambience. Gordale's 21 acres, covering all interests (including a fine cafeteria), make it a fun day out for all the family. And all for free! The exhibition continues until Sunday August 3rd NEWA's online gallery extends the life of the exhibition well beyond the 17 days at Gordale, with art lovers able to view and buy online at www.newa-uk.com almost all year round.

Contemporary Art in the City
T
his month Liverpool welcomes the 8th Liverpool Biennial Arts Exhibition. This is an amazing city wide celebration of modern and contemporary art. There are exhibitions and programmes popping up all over Liverpool for the next 4 months starting this July, there is something for everybody. Some of the venues included are The Old Blind School (former Trade Union Centre), the Bluecoat, FACT and Tate Liverpool. Also featured as part of Liverpool Biennial 2014 are the John Moores Painting Prize, Bloomberg New Contemporaries, exhibitions at Open Eye Gallery and LJMU's Exhibition Research Centre (Partner Exhibitions). In addition, there will be work by artists and curators throughout the city. A highlight of the opening weekend is a major concert at Liverpool Cathedral of a specially composed new work by Michael Nyman, Symphony No 11: Hillsborough Memorial. The piece will be performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, with Liverpool-born mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge and Liverpool Philharmonic Youth and Training Choirs, conducted by Josep Vicent You may have already marvelled at one of the first commissions, “The Dazzle Ship,” in the Albert Dock, commissioned to mark the centenary of the First World War. During the First World War, some 2,000 warships were painted in reds, oranges and greens to confuse German U-boats. They were known as "dazzle ships", and now the technique's been recreated as part of the Liverpool Biennial. 20

Lifestyle FASHION Liverpool brace yourself...... it's 3 months to Liverpool Fashion Week and we're kicking this year's off in big style with (uber heels) and the Fashion & Beauty Awards on 12 July.
Celebrity fashionista SIMON GLAZIN is up from London, we're showing our city off loud and proud..... How did you get into fashion?
I actually started my blog way before I got into the industry, but then trained as a journalist and started work at the Sunday Times Style magazine. From there I went to work for Very.co.uk and started interviewing their celebrity collaborations. It's all about who you know and how well you can talk. What excites you about fashion?
The fact that you can express yourself through what you wear, and also that it can completely change your state of mind when you pull on a fantastic dress or shirt. I love seeing new designers rise through the ranks too. What are the key trends for autumn/ winter?
Waists are cinched, blankets are the new scarves, pink is big and statement knits. What are you looking forward to the most at the FAB awards?
To see who wins! And all the glamour. Who is your favourite designer and why?
I love Vivienne Westwood because of her quirky cuts, unique take on fashion and her 'don't care' attitude. And Versace for the loud prints! What do you think about "celebrity" designers who have their own range in high street stores - without ever spending 22
a second at a sewing machine or learning anything about fashion design
It does sometimes annoy me because there are SO many amazing graduates who deserve a bigger chance. They have more to say about fashion. But I also understand that commercially celebs sell! What is it about Liverpool Fashion Week that gets you excited? You can guarantee there'll be loads of glamour, and it's nice to see regional designers too, and how they work. We banned the scousebrow - what do you think of Liverpool trends? I LOVE the whole rollers in the hair thing. The first time I saw it I thought I was dreaming! Also I know I've said it before, but the glamour. People get dressed up just to go to the shops. I love it. What's the worst thing you have seen on the catwalk and thought "no-one will ever wear that"? Pool sliders. And boy was I wrong! They're one of this season's biggest footwear trends! Which do you wear, high street or designer? A complete mix. Right now I have a Topman shirt on with Westwood jeans. It's all about HOW you wear something. Lifestyle FESTIVAL FEVER JAMEELA'S FESTIVAL FAVOURITES
Jameela Jamil reveals her essential ahead of the summer festivals.
M
y festival style is quirky, comfortable glamour – Kate Moss is my style icon.
Stick on nails are huge right now and I love the Elegant Touch Express neon nail and Ibiza collection, especially in the tie dye pattern, which is another huge trend this season. They are easy to apply and add a bit of costume to your outfit. Red lips are a make-up essential and I like to use a brown gel eyeliner for perfecting my flick. I start by following the shape of my eyelid from the outside in. It’s difficult to get an accurate line in one go, so I do lots of tiny lines and join them up. Adding a bit to either side as I go, ensuring the lines are nice and even. Toilet paper is an absolute festival essential and sunglasses to cover the shame. I also use a facial illuminator – it changes my face in seconds. The star sticker on my face started because I had a huge spot and was about to interview Russell Brand and so I wanted to cover it up with something. I used to be a teacher so I had lots of gold stars lying around, so I stuck it on. 3 years later and I’m still wearing it! Cleansing wipes are also a must- have and a boyfriend jumper is a festival wardrobe staple. I have 11 pairs of dungarees. You can never have enough pairs of dungarees in your life!

urprisingly, it took until 2012 before somebody opened a bar in Liverpool and called it ‘Sound’. But, it was worth the wait, because you’d be hard-pressed to find a more appropriate name for this precious little jewel in a sea of branded uniformity unless you went the whole hog and added the words ‘… As A Pound’ to the sign above the door. Opened by Jules Bennett and Paul Coakley on the corner of York Street and Duke Street in August 2012, Sound Food & Drink is now well established and superbly combines the essence of a bohemian continental street café with that of a fast-disappearing great British institution; the local pub. It manages to do this so well because the owners are completely hands on, like ‘landlords’ used to be, and how today’s salaried managers, with their sales targets and corporate training, aren’t allowed to be. Their personalities are stamped upon the bar and it caters wholeheartedly for their own kind of people; sound people, the cosmopolitan and open-minded; creative, gentle, friendly folk. The retro décor and furnishing are

simple, unpretentious and so authentic that the bar was recently used as a set for the forthcoming ITV biopic ‘Cilla’, doubling as the café where Ms White worked on Bold Street during the early years of Merseybeat. There is a strong sense of community at Sound Food & Drink that you just don’t get in many bars or pubs anymore and certainly not at ones in the city centre. This is evident both during the day, when it serves the bustling local business community in a similar way to bygone institutions such as the original Everyman Bistro and The Armadillo, and at night, when the bar really comes into its own as a watering hole for the city’s underground creative movers and shakers. Whether it’s a DJ playing Ska or 1980s Electro-Pop, televised football on the big screen or a session of Rock ‘n’ Roll Bingo, there is always something happening at this most happening of places.

have ever produced. However, don’t assume that’s me saying that I don’t like it, because I do, very much so. But the magnificence of this album is such, that its lasting effect on me is deep melancholy and a desperate need to go to the pub and drown my fake sorrows. There are a mix of musical influences on the album from dance to ambient and pop, it’s a bit weird but it works, and is a strong indication that Coldplay have left their old sound behind them for good. Which in my opinion can only be a positive move. The best track is the Avicii-produced “Sky Full of Stars.” Sheer brilliance. It encapsulates the bands venture into dance. The song manages to fuse the danceable beats of the genre with Coldplay’s signature keyboard riff. But with Avicii being the current deity of dance beats then “Sky Full of Stars” was always going to be a winner – especially to my ear drums. 31
Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW
EXAMPLE
In an exclusive interview with Joy Lewis Singer, songwriter, producer, occasional rapper and king of the open air arena Example, is set to release his 5th album ‘Live Life Living’ this month. It has been a mad and full-on year for him, and the pressure shows no sign of letting up, with a summer full of festivals, live gigs all over Europe and his residency in Ibiza, the Example party just keeps on turning. 32
Lifestyle CELEBRITY INTERVIEW What can you tell me about your new album “Live Life Living”? Well it is my 5th album, it’s pure 90’s with a nod to all my favourite acts and sounds from years ago; acid house, The Prodidgy, The Chemical Brothers, Faithless and Chasing Status inspired stuff. I was chatting to my mates on what they get up to and asked them what they used to listen to and what they want to hear now. So this new album, is inspired by them really. It is a happy summer vibe party nod to the 90’s sound. So if you are between 25-45 then hopefully this will bring good memories – and to the younger crowd, who do most of the music buying these days, it’s a new sound and fingers crossed they like it. Your sound has changed with every album – is this to keep you interested? Yes it is. To keep myself interested I’m always trying different styles and genres. I’m always torn between what I want to do, what fans want from me and of course the record industry is always looking for music that radio will pick up and play. So I play the game. I’ve been around for long enough to know that I have to create a few tracks on any album that radio will latch on to and then the rest of the album I can create music purely for me and the fans. What’s your creative process – how do you start to write music. Well it is something that has evolved over the years. I used to get sent a beat from big name djs like Calvin Harris, and then I would write around that. But I’ve been in this a while now and I’ve become better at what I do, better at the production side of things. This 5th album even though it’s electronic, I suppose is the most organic thing I have done to date, because every track started on the piano and guitar.
You’ve done some collaborations in the past – people from different musical backgrounds – but not this album, why the change? To be honest I much prefer to do all the vocals myself. I love to perform live, and that person that I might have collaborated with isn’t going to be with me when I’m performing at 1am in Ibiza. I don’t want a recording of their voice in the background while I perform, that’s just not for me. Not for this album anyway. You’re also known for how hard you work. Over 100 gigs last year and I heard over 150 this year. Ever think about chilling out and just doing nothing for a while? Nah Really? Nah I like it – I like being on the move. I love to perform, this is why I do what I do. I like being at home, in the studio and producing music – but the live performance is what I love about what I do. I love looking out on the crowd and watching them have a good time. It’s not all glamorous either, no private jets me, it’s Easy Jet all the way. In July I am doing 8 gigs in 10 days. So I’ll finish a set at 1am and head straight to the airport so I can play in another country the next night. I can’t sleep all day when I get there either because I will be doing 2 to 3 hours of interviews and promotions before I play that night. And straight after the gig – it’s the airport for me. But I love it.

Mums in the North West make better team players and problem solvers in the workplace
Edited by Joy Lewis
New poll suggests mothers are becoming increasingly vital to workforce
T
here is a new poll out, and this particular survey proves something that we already knew, that mothers are vital to the workforce. Not that I needed a survey to tell me this ….but still, sometimes it’s nice to have these things reconfirmed. I’m sure many mothers will agree with me when I say that becoming a parent didn’t teach me new skills that can be utilised in the workplace. But parenthood has honed certain skills to the point that if leadership, problem solving and multitasking was an Olympic sport then we would win gold every single time. This particular poll says that in the North West mothers are playing an increasingly significant role in both the workplace and the home - with three quarters (75 per cent) of bosses saying working mums are VITAL to the local workforce. And bosses in the region claim working mums make better team players (54 per cent) and problem solvers (37 per cent) than childless women, according to the findings from Microsoft Office 365.
Mothers in the region are also increasingly using technology in the home to access social networking sites (29 per cent) and for keeping in touch with friends (71 per cent) and admit to using online technologies such as online banking, emails and social media to manage an average of 30 per cent of their personal lives. The research findings mark the launch of Microsoft Office 365’s Working Wonders Mums initiative, which aims to connect aspiring mums with inspiring business leaders who are mums themselves. The programme aims to drive discussion around how mums are becoming the new digital experts across work and home. Journalist, author and skin care business entrepreneur Liz Earle last week led a panel discussion in London to explore topics surrounding working mothers and technology - and the TV presenter and mother of five said: “The research findings are indicative of changes I have seen in the business realm for working mothers over the last decade. Mothers work wonders both in the house and home, as they become a reliable resource to all those around them.”
According to the Microsoft Office 365 findings, 69 per cent of mothers in the North West feel that technology is helping them achieve work/life balance - with 57 per cent CALLING ALL PARENTS of mums agreeing it helps with ‘family or me JOIN OUR CAMPAIGN TO STOP HOLIDAY PRICE HIKING. time’ and saves them an average of 1.5 hours STOP CRIMINALKISING PARENTS WHO TAKE THEIR of time per day. It’s a degree of learning difficulty, and most importantly, there are no limits to what an adult or child with DS can achieve. Lifestyle CONCERT
Radio City 96.7 Summer Live Interview with Sam Smith
Radio City Summer Live Concert with Knowsley Community College, returns on
Sunday 20th July at the Liverpool Echo Arena. Sam Smith along with a whole host of stars are converging on Liverpool to perform, in what will undoubtedly be Liverpool’s biggest summer party of 2014.
It’s been an amazing year for you Sam, three top hits in the past 12 months, your voice can really hit those high notes especially in “Money on My Mind” – how do you do it? I’ve spent my whole life listening to female vocalists and I always wanted to sound like a girl when I sing, that’s always been my aim because I love the sound of the female voice. So, you have a head voice and a chest voice, and I trained every day, and trained through that break so I could belt those highest notes. 44
Your album “In the Lonely Hour” is out now, how’s that going? I think it’s always important to make music that people who can’t sing can sing along too. That people are digitising both “Money on My Mind” as an electronic pop song, and “Stay with Me” as a gospel song is to me quite an amazing thing to me. They are two completely different genres, that’s why they are the first two tracks on the album. It’s to show people that I am not going to restrict myself to genre or sound, every song on the album is completely different, my voice is the only thing linking the different tracks together.
Lifestyle CONCERT Why did you call the album, “In The Lonely Hour”? You don’t hear a lot of guys being emotional in music these days. I wanted to be very brutally honest, it’s me talking about my own personal issues, hitting them head on, and dealing with them and making myself feel better. Are you excited to be performing at the Radio City Summer Live concert? Yes 100%, I am so excited to play at Radio City Summer Live concert. It’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait to play the Echo Area too, I’ve never played there before, it is going to be great!

NEWS FROM THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TheOpen.com The Open puts locally sourced food to the ‘Fore’ CHEFS at one of golf’s most prestigious Majors are to tee off the catering with dishes created specially for the event. A range of menus for the official on-course hospitality featuring locally sourced ingredients will be par for the course during the The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club on 16 - 20 July. Not only has executive head chef Ben Dutson, who will lead the catering team throughout The Open, tracked down the region’s finest honey, meat, dairy and shellfish, but he has even invented a burger named in honour of the Championship. The Open Gourmet Burger, which will be served to guests in The Champion’s Club, will be topped with pepper jack cheese and pickles in a glazed brioche bun, accompanied by seasoned potato wedges and a dressed salad. The Champion’s Club is one of a number of hospitality areas 48
which will operate from a tented village close to the 16th hole and will offer a slightly more informal alternative to that offered in the other packages including The Gallery Restaurant, The 1860 Club and The Premier Suites. “We’re going to be offering locally caught shellfish, making use of Scouse honey and featuring meat from Cumbrian charcuterie experts Woodall’s in a starter,” said Ben. “Our speciality, however, is going to be The Open Gourmet Burger. It’s a premium event and we’ve created a premium burger that will be made freshly on site.” “It’ll be a very far cry from fast-food, factory production line-style burgers which get stacked up in chutes: we’re delivering a gourmet burger from grill to bun in 10 seconds.”
A range of fully inclusive hospitality packages, are available throughout the event and guests can also enjoy a special rate for the practice day in The Champion’s Club. The Open Championship will be held at Hoylake from 13-20 July and tickets are on sale now. The Open has seen strong ticket sales this year, with fans pre-booking practice day tickets and contest day tickets early. UNICEF Soccer Aid
O
n 8 June, two teams of football legends and famous faces from music, film and TV thrilled a crowd of close to 70,000 fans at Old Trafford as the Rest of the World beat England 4-2 to win Soccer Aid 2014. The match has raised £5.3 million (and counting!) for UNICEF's life-saving work for children. The match may be over but you can still donate to Soccer Aid and help the world's most vulnerable children get life-saving food, medicine and clean water. Every pound donated to Soccer Aid 2014 will be doubled by the UK government, up to a total of £5 million, so together we can reach even more children. 50

Smugglers Cove
Lifestyle FOOD
Review by Neil Woods An early evening meal with the good lady wife at the Albert Dock was just the ticket before we went to see Lion King at the Empire. Smugglers Cove is fast becoming a real favourite, mention that you are going and people have either already been or look with immediately reply that they also want to go. The interior is designed to resemble the bow pirate ship, it’s very atmospheric with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Food at The Smugglers Cove offers typical good pub gub. The menu holds with the usual home comforts such as fish & chips, bangers & mash and burgers, but it’s their signature dish that most people want to try; sopped at the table hanging kebabs, which you can have in a variety of meats. For starters we had garlic mushrooms, pork crackling and houmous which came with a massive side salad. For the main we both had steak, medium, with a side portion of chips. However, if you want a salad, that has to be ordered separately. We struggled to take in dessert, but our wonderful attentive waitress, Amy, convinced us we had to try. So we opted for Sticky toffee pudding with custard, and a hanging fruit kebab with strawberries, marshmallows, icecream and chocolate sauce – which looks as impressive as it tastes! 52
Nothing at the Smugglers Cove has escaped the design team’s sense of the dramatics, everywhere you look nothing has been left unblemished. From the menus that are presented on aged paper with a wax seal to the sun bleached bottled beer almanac that is placed upon every table. To the starters either coming in a small pirates chests or hollowed out skulls - which is outrageously macabre and very cool. All these touches both bold and subtle, serve to make Smugglers Cove not just a restaurant, but a theatrical experience. HOTEL CHOCOLAT COCOA BAR
I
have been a fan of Hotel Chocolate for years – ever since I was lucky enough to be invited to their store opening in Manchester. This almost 5 years ago was the first taste I had of Hotel Chocolate – the experience was divine, quite simply the best food I have ever tasted. Imagine my delight when they not only opened a Hotel Chocolat store in Liverpool One, but recently they expanded to incorporate a Cocoa Bar within the shop itself. And then they invited me to sample their chocolaty delights! Hotel Chocolat Cocoa Bar has taken the love of all things cocoa to a whole new level. In this Cocoa Cafe - a chocolate-scented cave exists. The ambiance
54
is so unlike other cafes with their overly bright, brash and loud interiors. Here it’s different, cool but not cold, where the staff are genuinely welcoming to everybody that arrives. This is a haven for the shopper, an oasis of calm, smack in the middle of the shopping mayhem. There is a funky bar vibe here, with subdued lighting and quiet drum and bass playing in the background.
before I return to sample those too. All the food is made from scratch on site in Leeds and shipped over daily. Almost everything has roasted cocoa nibs or chocolate in it - including the few savoury nibbles they also stock. Everything is created and served with typical Hotel Chocolat high standards and extreme care, creating pure chocolate luxury.
I ordered a salted caramel hot chocolate with a helping of rocky highway on the side – so called because they say it’s sooo much better than the rocky road. Their boasting was not even a little unfounded. Their pastries I left for another visit but they all looked so inviting that I don’t think it will too be long
The only downside is that they don’t have high chairs so I won’t be taking my twin boys with me for a few years yet. But sometimes even us mums need an occasional escape from our busy lives and this is the perfect place to offer just that.

Globe Trotter, John Carter visits Japan
John Carter, long time presenter of TV’s ‘Wish You Were Here’ programme and seasoned globetrotter re-kindles old memories from a new range of guided walking holidays. My first encounter with Japan was brief. I flew to Tokyo, delivered a speech to a tourism conference and returned to London two days later.Even so, I have strong memories of that visit, most of which are too personal to share.
I
was unable to rekindle them when I returned six years later with more time at my disposal. Japan is a fascinating enigma and an assault on the senses. A country of extreme contrasts, it is surely one of the most exciting and beautiful destinations on the planet. Made up of a vast collection of islands located in the Pacific Ring of Fire with highly varied climates, this is a land of ancient legends and philosophy, where nature is venerated
and tradition maintained. Voluntarily closed off from the outside world for centuries, Japan has now embraced the modern with tremendous speed and is at the forefront of modern technological invention. The part Japan played in WWII is not forgotten but the tragic consequences have led to the emergence of a dynamic and peace orientated society that acknowledges its past, both good and bad. Today, we gain superficial glimpses of Japan through film and
television but the only way to truly gain insight is to visit this extraordinary country. In this new holiday we have selected the areas that we feel gives a good introduction to Japan in a short time and covers the sites that most people want to see on a holiday to this exciting country. I found Tokyo as fascinating as it had been on that first visit (ask someone to explain how postmen deliver letters in the city, and you'll see what I mean) and had the opportunity to take one of the super- fast trains to Kyoto. My lasting impression is of how Japan manages to mix up the old and the new without anything seeming too incongruous. It is a destination, and a society, like no other. Ramblers Worldwide Holidays are offering WHISTLESTOP JAPAN- a 9 day holiday exploring Tokyo, Hakone, Mount Fuji, Kyoto and the golden temple of Kinkako-ji. Price from £2,999 per person includes return flights, transfers and accommodation. ramblersholidays.co.uk 01707 33 11 33 57

Lifestyle INSPIRATION
Julie West is a Mighty Girl indeed. In an interview with Amanda Moss
T
he Liverpool business community will be familiar with this popular entrepreneuer who has run Zest Lets for 6 years which she set up when she moved to Liverpool 12 years ago. She said, "I saw the recession was coming and letting properties always does well in a recession so saw the opportunity." The property guru, who helped sell Beckingham Palace to, well, The Beckhams, has now started her latest venture, A to Z Estate Agents after the collapse of Zest which shut down as she fought an incurable disease called Churg Strauss Syndrome. Julie said, "I was diagnosed with CCS in June 2012, my diagnosis was on the Friday and they sent me up to the ward for treatment that day and then I was back in again on the Monday, on Chemo bam! I had no time to get used to the idea. I was really ill, at times I thought I was going to die. I live on my own and it was scary, I just had to battle through it. It was horrible." And she did indeed battle and won, though she said, "I am in remission now but it could come back at any time. I had 6 months of chemo and am on chemo tablets and steroids for 4 years." All the while she was fighting her illness she was unable to run Zest Lets and left it in the 58
hands of her staff who she now believes did not do the best job and is devastated by the consequences which saw her beloved company close down in March. Julie said, "I wasn't there, I couldn't do what I had to do and the company shut down without me at the helm, but I am getting a lot of support from my clients and I although I owe some people money I haven't disappeared. I haven't gone away and I will pay people back. It just takes time. I am truly sorry but it wasn't my fault, I was really ill and I trusted people I now know I shouldn't have done." She has fought off losing her business, her security has been threatened but she has not given in. In a short space of time A to Z Properties is growing from strength to strength and is finding a comfortable footing in the property market. Julie West is back with a vengeance and has got her zest back. We love a Mighty Girl!

Partners in place for £200 million housing investment
MORE than £200 million is to be spent in Liverpool, delivering 1,500 new homes and bringing a further 1,000 back into use.
M
ore than £200 million is to be spent in Liverpool, delivering 1,500 new homes and bringing a further 1,000 back into use.
Liverpool City Council has appointed a partnership of developers to jointly build 1,500 new homes and LMH will bring 1,000 empty properties, including those that have not been lived in for a long time back into use. The ‘Building Our Future’ partnership, which will run for an initial five years, has the potential to attract over £200 million of private investment into the city, focusing on building the right homes, in the right place, at the right time. The partnership will also prioritise employing local people, providing training and supporting local supply chains, as well as developing and delivering complementary economic development projects. Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson launched the search for a Housing Delivery Partner last summer as part of his plans to work with public and private sector organisations to drive up the quality of housing in the city. He said: “I want everyone in Liverpool to have access to a decent home, and that’s why improving our housing stock is one of my top priorities” The partnership will carry out a comprehensive review of the housing market across the city, to identify development and refurbishment
opportunities - taking into account housing need and demand; the Council’s Housing Strategy; and the need to complement other actual and planned regeneration projects. The two, full delivery programmes for each area of work – one for new-build and one for refurbishment – will be agreed by the partnership board, before being recommended to the Council’s Cabinet for consideration and approval in September this year. Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Ann O’Byrne, said: “This new partnership will play a major part in the on-going transformation of housing in this city, and will help us build on the fantastic momentum we’ve created in recent years. “Once the partnership is in place, we’ll be working together to drive forward some really important schemes which will increase housing choice and breathe new life into communities. 59

PHILLIP’S
DIY... Hello Lifestyle Readers! This last month has been particularly busy for me but that’s just the way I like it! Regular readers will remember that I am currently working hard to renovate my dream home just outside Liverpool which is progressing nicely. This project is particularly close to my heart and it’s exciting to see it develop day by day. I have been doing a lot of filming for ’60 Minute Makeover’, with new episodes coming soon. The programme is now in its eleventh series and I have been on board since 2007. We have a fantastic team and I always enjoy working in such a high-pressure situation. I also spent some time supporting Swedish workwear manufacturer at a local clothing event. The three day event took place at Mark1, last weekend in Hereford and involved a number of workwear and leisure wear suppliers. As brand ambassador for Blåkläder, I was on hand to meet, greet and hand out prizes at the event. I love Blåkläder workwear and recommend them to all my colleagues and contacts in the trades and in the construction industry. It’s great to be able to go to an event like this and speak directly to customers and spread the word. I’m also a regular on premier shopping channel Ideal World giving live demonstrations for the paint company Wagner’s range of products as part of their pick of the day feature. I am the official brand ambassador of Wagner’s, who are a market leading manufacturer of high tech products and systems for coating and decorating. They really do make decorating straight forward! That’s about it from me this month my friends. As always, make the most of my DIY tip this month and make sure your home looks as good as it possibly can! Until next time… Until next time… All the best,

18v circular saw 18v plainer 18v drill/driver Counterstick and drill bits Tape measure MDF/plywood sheets Screws
Measure and cut your sheets down to size using an 18v cordless circular saw, Hold the 2 sections together so you can drill pilot holes and countersink before screwing together “by counter sinking your screw holes will allow you to filler over the hole before painting. Now use the same drill driver or a impact screwdriver “either one will be sufficient” to drive the 50mm screws in to place holding the 2 sections together Place your box section into position just to check that it fits. You may find when it’s in place the 2 joining edges of your box section were you screwed together is not quite fitting flush, don’t worry by using a 18v cordless plainer you can simply plain down uneven edges, then finish it off to a nice smooth finished look by using a sheet/orbital sander. Boxing in around pipes on the floor doesn’t always mean you have to fix them down as you may need access to the pipes in the future so you can simply just rest the boxing into place and maybe just hold down with silicon if required.

The new BMW X6
T
alking about big cars, the BMW X6 is a giant brute of a four wheel drive vehicle. The good folk at BMW have decided not to give in and cease to make this marmite of cars, but to update the design of the X6 and make it even more of giant tarmac cracking beast. The second generation X6, which is available later this year, boasts more power, less consumption, more strength and even more space.
THE FIRST-EVER MINI 5-DOOR HATCH Have you seen the new look Mini lately? They are HUGE, long gone is the chic and diminutive nippy vehicle from the film The Italian Job. In its place is the practical tank like family car, which is about to get that little bit bigger.
T
his autumn Mini is launching its first ever 5-door hatch. This brand new model features enhanced interior comfort and practicality thanks to the extended wheelbase. Rear passengers now have 72 millimetres more legroom to look
forward to, wow that’s an extra toes worth! But as it is now a family car the good news is that a third small child can travel in the rear - albeit without a car seat. It’s taller too, by a whole 15 millimetres no less. The big space change is the boot, as its capacity has gone up by 30%. So there will be enough room for a buggy in the boot – which as it’s now a family car, is imperative really. Mini hasten to add that the Mini of today is still fun – but I think it’s lost its way a bit. Yes it was recently named as Britain’s favourite car of all time, but the Mini that is manufactured today is a far cry from the fun loving, sexy motor that was the icon of the 60’s.

BMW i8 – the new age sports car
T
he BMW i8 as a concept, was first spied in Frankfurt in 2009 – it’s been a long wait for this simply stunning car to be launched. It looks like something out of a futuristic film with its scissor doors, sweeping wheel arches and cut out bonnet. But don’t be fooled this isn’t just a pretty face. The BMW i8 unites both the petrol head and the environmentalist worlds by offering sporty driving performance with low consumption and emission figures.
An entirely new concept of sports car, the BMW i8 is more efficient due to its intelligent lightweight construction with carbon and aerodynamic design. It’s more sustainable, with highly efficient BMW eDrive technology and recyclable materials in the interior. Yet with no compromise on dynamics and its sporting appearance, it creates the optimum combination of driving pleasure and efficiency. The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid that brings together the advantages of innovate electric motor and combustion engine technologies. The result is an extraordinary driving experience – with extremely low consumption and low emissions.

Lifestyle THE LAST WORD WITH AMANDA MOSS
Joyful July!! H
ooray, school is out and it is summer holiday time! I don’t understand any parent who complains that the summer holidays are too long - why have children if you don’t want to spend time with them? I love family time, being around my kids and sharing their company is the best feeling in the world. It is a blessing I never take for granted, which is why I feel so strongly about holiday companies who hike their prices up. It is so unfair, not just for parents but also for teachers and anyone working in the education system. And while I am on my soapbox about inflated prices, which are often doubled, I am completely outraged about parents who are criminalised for taking their kids out of school in term time. Of course common sense must prevail but parents who tag holidays on a few days here and there to a weekend should not be punished. A lot of lessons are taught outside the classroom and the rights are parents are shrinking year by year. Good parenting involves teaching your children about life skills including travel.
Save yourself £1000’s and hours of time and benefit from salon results at home with “Micro-Dermabrasion in a jar”
Please get behind our campaign #fineparents. We are damn fine parents and we are being fined. It is not practical for us to go away in holiday time, as a business owner all my staff have children. If we all took holidays in August, there would be no magazine coming out in September. Liverpool Fashion Week launches its range of clothing on 12 July, buy the T shirt and let’s get it trending. 66
