Key players from Liverpool’s business, retail and media world celebrated the facelift of St Johns Shopping Centre. The £2.5m redevelopment is the first phase of a multi‐ million pound revamp of the centre. The event saw guests serenaded by singing waiters in the newly revamped food court. A red carpet lined Houghton Way on the approach to the brand new entrance next to the Radio City beacon The changes have vastly improved the food court, which serves the landmark shopping centre’s 14 million customers each year. It is the first revamp of the food court since its installation a quarter of a century ago and has dramatically modernised the lower‐ground area as well as the atria around the escalators and the first floor balustrade. Major restaurateurs including McDonalds, KFC and Subway have confirmed their commitment to stay at St Johns and refitted their units. New outlets, including noodle bar Chopstix, have joined them in the remodelled food court. Christopher Huxtable from the owners, InfraRed Capital Partners Limited, comments: ‘We have been extremely pleased with the progress that has been made since our purchase of the centre. St Johns is a true landmark in Liverpool and investment is essential for it to maintain and improve its place at the forefront of shoppers’ minds. ‘The food court has not been refurbished since 1988, so the changes have had a huge impact on the feel of the centre, reinforced by the introduction of new national brands to improve the quality and variety of our catering offer.’ David Henderson‐Williams, from asset manager Hark St Johns has been significantly improved with new lighting, Group, adds: ‘The investment in the food court represents paintwork and the introduction pay on foot machines. a big change for St Johns, and we are now eager for Ian Ward, St Johns Shopping Centre director, customers to see the benefits of the changes. The food says: ‘The improvements throughout the centre are huge. court is a destination point for many shoppers at St Johns The launch of the food court, the new‐look entrance on and the place where they are likely to spend the most Houghton Street and the modernisation of the car park time when they visit. The food court refurbishment has are our first big strides in bringing St Johns completely up improved the shopping experience in the centre overall, to date. Our shoppers so far have been delighted with the improvements, and we would encourage everyone to visit providing a modern, bright place to relax.’ In addition to the food court development, the car park at the centre for themselves to take a fresh look at St Johns.’

Lifestyle COMMUNITY NEWS Liverpool's Chinese Community finally receive the recognition they deserve

A plaque to honour the Chinese seamen who played an important part in Liverpool’s history has been unveiled on Nelson Street. The blue plaque will play tribute to the 15-20,000 Chinese seafarers who made Liverpool their home, around the time of the First World War, after working with The Blue Funnel Shipping Line, a British shipping line which traded with China. After the war, many were forced by the Government to return to China, unbeknownst to their families. The Blue Funnel Line has been recognised for their aid in helping families affected by the repatriation. A ceremony took place on the 18th November to unveil the plaque, organised by oral historians John Campbell and Moira Kenny, which was attended by Chinese sailors and invited guests. The plaque aims to become a renowned cultural attraction for sailors and their families, as part of a larger-scale project to unearth the history of Liverpool’s Chinese community. Now however Liverpool embraces and welcomes its wide range of diverse cultures, in particular its Chinese community as it is the oldest Chinese community in Europe. Indeed perhaps because of this many students travel here from the Far

East to study at our Universities. It was recently announced that Liverpool’s landmark Scandinavian Hotel is to be turned into student flats. The derelict hotel is located on Duke Street, and is thought to be targeted predominantly at the growing number of Chinese students coming to study in the city due to its appealing proximity to the entrance to China town. Rebecca Mortby and JulieTruman are determined that international students in Liverpool will feel welcome in the city, with their innovative new business, Greenfinch Graduations. Greenfinch aims to challenge reports of international students being dissatisfied by their experience in the UK. “Liverpool has always had strong links with language courses and Erasmus programmes, and therefore with international students. Erasmus programs have been around for almost 50 years in the city, and Liverpool has always been seen as a fantastic city for international students.” says Mortby. Greenfinch Graduations provides a one-stop shop trip planning service for international students and their families; making travel arrangements, organising city tours or finding interpreters. “Greenfinch always aims to make international students feel welcome in the UK.” Liverpool now aspires to make sure that the Chinese community feel welcome and respected within the city, and for the new plaque to serve as a reminder of the role that the Chinese seafarers played in Liverpool’s history. Local Councillor Steve Munby said: “Liverpool prides itself on its maritime history and an important part of that history is the role of Chinese seamen. Many of them gave their lives while serving with the Merchant Navy and others, shamefully, were forcibly removed from their homes and families. The contribution Chinese seafarers have made to the city should never be overlooked and this plaque recognises their role and that of the Blue Funnel Line.”

Lifestyle TALENT UP AND COMING MUSICIAN...

MATTY HOLDING

Matty, 16, is a self taught accoustic guitarist and singer-songwriter from Bootle. Discovered by Liverpool pap, Ian Fairbrother with his comany Merseyside Artist management, Matty is now performing on the circuit around the city, including The Brink and Envi and has supported Mic Lowry and The Valentine Brothers. Ian said. "MAM was set up because I saw Matty play and realised there are a lot of young talented artists out there who aren't being given a chance. Shows like the X Factor and BGT are too commercial and they are slowing down the real talent getting a rung on the ladder. They aren't getting anywhere but I can help them." Matty came to our office and gave an impromptu performance in front of the staff. He received a standing ovation and hardly surprising. Flying through the second round of Breakthrough Artists with Teenstar, Matty is set to take the music industry by storm... watch this space. 14

THE RADIO CITY LIVE CONCERT TOOK PLACE LAST MONTH AND DANIEL BIRD WENT ALONG TO SEE WHAT ALL THE NOISE WAS ABOUT..... The line up included Neon Jungle, Little Mix, Jason Derulo, The Vamps and our very own Rebecca Ferguson taking to the stage. The opening act of the night, Conor Maynard certainly set the atmosphere for the night. With an arena full of 7,000 screaming fans, it was certain that the rest of the artists would have an amazing crowd. BGT finalists Luminites, set the stage for our very own Rebecca Ferguson who performed a set of three songs, includingScouse Anthem “Show Me Love” as well as her latest single “I Hope” and her first single “Nothings Real But Love”, which she dedicated to her Mother and Brother who Rebecca asked the audience to pray for as they are currently unwell. The Scousers in the arena, certainly backed Rebecca as she took to the stage to perform her set. Rebecca stated the week before how much she loves being home & will be returning on tour. The UK’s latest girlband, Neon Jungle, also took to the stage and performed to a lively

crowed, opening with their first single “Trouble”. Jess, Asami, Shereen, Amirathanked fans for the support they’ve received since July and then went on to perform their new single “Braveheart”. Boyband The Vamps also performed three tracks including their first single “Can We Dance”. I spoke to a The Vamps super-fan who stated “they weremy favourite act of the night and I couldn’t wait to see them perform!” With the band labeled as “the next One Direction”, it’s no surprise they had every girl & the odd guy on their feet and singing away. As well as an ocean of fans outside. Headline artist Jason Derulo, certainly did not shock. With the biggest set, we had the pleasure of seeing him perform some of his tracks including “Ridin’ Solo”, “The Other Side”, “Talk Dirty” and “In My Head”. It is no surprise Jason got the loudest screams, especially when he went shirtless, sending every female into a sweet delirium. Jason also treated fans to an incredible dance show. I mean, it wouldn’t be a Jason Derulo performance without the dancing, would it?! After an incredible set, Jason announced he is returning to Liverpool on his world tour. 15

xNew Year!

Happy WHAT THE BUTLER SAW... Well where did that come from? A brand new year is here and we have said goodbye to 2013 already.

Lee

S

o what were your highlights from last year? I’ve got to say djing at the Echo Arena for the Radio City live gig in Dec was a main highlight for me. To play in front of 10, 000 people is something else. It has made me very keen to put my own dance event on there, now how good would that be? It’s definitely something that’s on the top my to do list this year. I’m also working hard on an outdoors event for May 2014 which would see a big top plus 3 other arenas all set on the waterfront. I’m hoping to give you all news on this in next month’s edition, I’m so excited about it. I’ve also got some projects lined up in the studio too with all of our projects getting some big attention, watch out for our “Bingo Staar - Banjo Children “ track which is set for a full release soon on aatw records plus plenty to come from our Rudedog/Appex brands too. By the way if you are after some free mixes to download on your new iphone etc then get to my sound cloud page www.soundcloud. com/djleebutler, there’s new and old skool mixes on there for FREE. So can I say a Happy New Year and may all your dreams come true in 2014 . As for new year resolutions, have you made any?? I have made a few, but main resolution is a little strange this year. It’s to stop my middle of the night munching, yes I’m up every night around till 3am - hazard of the job eating bowls of cereal and other rubbish so that’s got to stop. Sitting downstairs in

About SONYA (CAPALDI HAIR)

After having my 4 children I decided to go back to college and retrain in hairdressing which I had started originally at the age of 17, being 34 I felt as though I could commit to the course and give my all to it. After finishing my Friend Nicola Howard approached me about coming on board with her to do hair as she had trained as a make-up artist and had started her own business Tiger Make Up. So Capaldi Hair was born. In our first year we achieved so much. Nicola organised The Macmillan Fashion Show 'Fantasy' which raised over £3000. Last summer we opened the hair and make-up boutique at Model 101 which was very nerve racking but very exciting. Then came an email from TV North, A television Company who produce shows for MTV. They wanted us to mentor on a forth coming series. It was just amazing. We also did our first celeb make-up For Tricia Penrose as she won Celebrity Ambassador for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Our hair & make-up has also been published in several magazines Including Fascination, Modelinscene Magazine, County Brides – and Your Merseyside Wedding Magazine.

About NICOLA HOWARD (Tiger Make-Up)

I worked for 10 years at the Liverpool Echo on the Switchboard, after being made redundant and with 3 young children all at school I decided it was time to shine and do something I'd always dreamed of. Become a Make-Up Artist. I used my redundancy money to train, Level 2 Cosmetic, Level 3 Fashion & Photographic fast track courses. I then enrolled at Liverpool Community College for My Level 3 diploma in Theatrical Special effects Hair & Media Make-up. I loved the course, I learned all the hair techniques to be able to creatively put them all together and make something I never thought possible. Future plans? We recently did the make up for Cosmedicoach Antonia Mariconda and Dr Dawn Harper from TV show Embarrassing Bodies, for the Aesthtic Awards 2013 which has now led to an invitation to be on their hair and make-up team for her Sky TV show. Then it's the Bierkeller Liverpool Lifestyle awards in March where I am hoping to regain my crown as Liverpool's Best make Up Artist , Sonya is shortlisted for 'Best Salon' so please vote for us. 25

Lifestyle COMPETITION Watery theme for park poetry competition

A

fter the events of last month along Wirral’s coastline could there by a more apt theme for next year’s Birkenhead Park Poetry Competition than ‘water’?

The flooding experienced last week in a number of our coastal resorts brought sea water a little bit closer to land than most people would have liked but in daily life, water is everywhere. We drink it, wash with it, cook with it, play with it, swim in it, travel on it, dive in it. It can take a life, but it can also save lives by putting out fires. Birkenhead Park rangers are currently inviting entries from people of all ages for their annual poetry competition. There are three age groups – ‘Oak’ is for adults, ‘Sapling’ is for young people aged between 11 and 18 and ‘Acorn’ is for children under the age of 11.

The only stipulation is that submitted poems must have a ‘watery’ theme this year. The closing date for entries is 12th January 2014. Selected entries will be exhibited in the Gallery of the Visitor Centre at the Park from 25th January to 14th February 2014, open 9am to 4pm every day. Winners, who will be announced at an awards ceremony on Saturday 1st February 2014, will get to plant an oak tree in the park’s poets’ corner. More information and entry rules are available from Birkenhead Park Visitor Centre. Contact them on 0151 652 5197, email birkenheadpark@wirral.gov.uk or follow the park on Twitter

Lifestyle RESTAURANT REVIEW LIFESTYLE'S

NEIL WOODS VISITS...

T

he first thing that hits you when you enter Bem Brazil on Hanover Street is its warm ambiance, the second thing is the enticing smell of dinner being prepared! The décor is amazing and they have an abundance of very friendly and considerate staff who provide a first class service. The restaurant area is spacious, semicircular black leather banquettes line the windows that look out onto Hanover Street contrasting with the rustic wooden chairs and tables. We were shown to our table by the maître d’ while he explained what they call “the concept”. He invited us to take a plate and help ourselves to the buffet items. The cornucopia of food was so mesmerising that all thoughts of restraint were forgotten. Salads greens, tomatoes, pasta, cous cous, red cabbage, olives, paella and breaded chicken the list is endless. When we returned to our table, they had already left a basket of chips. Then it was time for the main event - the meat.

32

Here’s how the meat bit works, there’s a little round card set beside each placemat. One side was green and said “Sim, por favor/Yes, please”, and the other was red and said “Não, obrigado/No, thank you”. We were to turn it

either way according to whether or not we needed an injection of fresh meat. Then it began. The meat carvers – passadores – came bearing gifts. Sausages first, plump and red and oozing oil, followed by rump steak and then, over the course of an hour or more: hunks of sirloin, beef skirt and ribs, the Brazilian favourite picanha (rump cap), chicken thighs with chilli, leg of lamb, smoked gammon, pork collar and ribs, The star of the feast was a succulent fillet steak which was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth with a satisfying burst of tongue-tingling flavour. The children loved it, we had great fun comparing our opinions on the various dishes as they came along. We ate until we were well and truly stuffed - well at least until the chocolate fountain with skewers of fruit and marshmallows coated in chocolate was spotted! I can honestly find no fault with Bem Brasil, the food is superb and the service exemplary. We had a thoroughly wonderful Christmas night out. Bem Brasil is one of our favourite places to go to now, we are already planning our return.

Lifestyle EDUCATION

Hugh Baird College

Showcase Staff Talent H

ugh Baird College has begun a programme of events designed to showcase the talents of its staff. The incentive was opened on Wednesday with an exhibition of photography by Steve Whittle, Hugh Baird College’s Quality Facilitator for Equality and Diversity. Steve is a keen runner whose training regularly takes him across Crosby beach and past Anthony Gormley’s renowned installation of 100 cast iron men entitled ‘Another Place’. Steve has taken his camera with him on 1046 consecutive runs over the past three years and the exhibition in Hugh Baird College’s new L20 Cafe 34

saw the best images he has captured displayed to staff, students and the public. Prints of the beautiful and often arresting images of the beach, sculptures and the surrounding landscape were also on sale, with all profits being donated to the Stonewall charity. Steve said “I have always taken great joy from the landscape of Crosby beach and its inhabitants, both the wildlife and the iron statues. The view from the beach is never the same twice and often changes hour by hour. I always carry my camera

when I run; the area is so beautiful there is always a photograph to be taken. I use a small camera I found for £20 on eBay, I couldn’t carry heavy professional kit and complete my run in a time I’d be happy with!” Hugh Baird College will be hosting further exhibitions and demonstrations throughout 2014, all designed to showcase the talent, interests and abilities of its staff. With over 500 people working for Hugh Baird College there will be some exciting things to come!

Steve Whittle’s photographs are available for viewing and purchase. For information email Steve. Whittle@hughabird.ac.uk. Prices range from £3 to £26 for framed and non-framed prints.

Lifestyle RESTAURANT REVIEW THE LONDON CARRIAGE WORKS

L

iverpool is known best for its top notch restaurants, night life and hotels.

The London Carriage Works presents all that in one. Hope Street Hotel is one of the finest hotels brought to Liverpool, and even more, the restaurant that goes with it was extravagant. The staff were extremely friendly upon arrival, and throughout the night, they kept their customers satisfied and with a smile on their faces. The restaurant is perfectly situated right opposite the world’s famous Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in the centre of town, and amongst other bars and restaurants. The London Carriage Works first welcomed in their loyal customers in December 2003, and it soon became the City’s leading restaurant. The building is surrounded in a beautiful oak wood, and inside decorated with huge shards of glass which sets off the beautiful elegant look. The menu presented us with food that catered for all eaters, including vegetarian food, which really impressed me. As the waitress seated us and took our coats, she guided us through the menu then offered us a Merry Berry Aperitif. As the first dish came, I couldn’t help but notice how nicely presented the food was, throughout the 4 dishes, this opinion didn’t once alter. 36

The waitress announced the food in front of us – a glorious first starter of warm crusty bread, butter and chicken liver pate. Washed down with an ice cold glass of water, this was the perfect snack option. We then had our starter of creamy soup with a hint of parsnips and more warm bread, the soup weren’t much to my fancy, although my friend really enjoyed his. The mains soon came, and as I enjoyed the taste of Polenta and Carrot Pasta, which was a combination of baby vegetables, pine nuts, pesto, cream sauce with shavings of parmesan, confit tomatoes and fresh basil, my friend enjoyed a pork chop also combined with baby vegetables including broccoli and sweet carrots. As he complimented the main throughout the night, we were then greeted with our desserts – ice cream and lemon shortbread, or my choice of ice cream and chocolate gateau, all washed down with a delicious chilled wine, Guilhem Rose Moulin De Gassac.

2014 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS:

Lifestyle HEALTH

GET FIT & EAT RIGHT G

uess what? It’s time to make your New Year’s resolution – AGAIN!

Did you know, the two top resolutions on everyone’s list are to be wealthier and also be more fit and healthy? Incredibly, way down on the list was “happiness”, however I guess owning a sexy Range Rover Evoque and looking fabulous would come pretty close to feeling euphoric! Which reminds me, my husband owes me BIG TIME for moving house during Christmas week – not a good idea. We spend the day surrounded by boxes and dressed in my animal ‘Onsie’ to keep warm. My bum looked like the saggy rear end of a pantomime horse. Anyway, back to those top two; I can’t guarantee a sure-fire way to riches but I can share with you some easy ways and to get rid of your “Christmas turkey tummy” and help you reach and maintain your New Year’s resolution goals (beyond January). The key to reaching health and fitness goals is through a combination of diet and exercise. With my easy 2-Step Plan, you’ll look and feel a winner without spending a fortune on diet foods and gym memberships.

42

Get down to your local farm shop and buy fresh fruit and vegetables. Then cut everything up and put them in containers, that way they are easily accessible when you want to create a healthy meal – simples! Also, consider buying your meat from a butcher or in bulk. It may seem more expensive but it tastes far better than supermarket produce which is full of salt and water (hence less taste). By cooking fresh and planning your meals in advance you’ll save a bundle - and your shrink your waistline.

Keep fit by taking it easy

Shop smart and healthy

We all dreams of a leaner, fitter body, but the truth is it may take time, particularly if you've stuffed yourself one too many times or if you haven't been physically active in a while.

The key to eating right - is to shop right. Stop buying pre-packed diet meals just because they’re convenient. Professionally, I consider them to be junk and wouldn’t fill a mouse.

There’s a real connection between exercise and pain, so the secret to a long-lasting exercise regime is to take it gently and gradually. Don’t over-do it because it’ll hurt and that’s the main reason why 93% of people

Lifestyle HEALTH

give up and resort back to being couch potatoes half way through January. A good fitness program that works your whole body can consist of walking and gentle lifting. So long as you get your heart rate up and muscles stimulated, you’ll start to burn fat, lose weight and tone up your body. Avoid overwhelming yourself by setting realistic expectations. Stick to one small physical activity goal like walking 30 minutes a day, swimming or join a local community centre keep fit club because it’s cheap and everyone looks normal – not muscular mutants.

Lifestyle CULTURE TALKING TO THE MAN WHO CREATES ART AND EMOTIONS ...FROM

LEGO

By Nathan Sawaya www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/imagineear | Andrew Nugee - www.imagineear.com

as well, and for adults and families. Nathan was at home in California when I needed to interview him. I would have liked the diversion, but instead, we set up a call and organised a local sound engineer to record his answers professionally, which meant that trip to LA will have to wait. The result is an interview that will give visitors a unique personal experience of the exhibition with Nathan. He is a pleasure to talk to, and lively, animated and different. And he obviously loves what he does, a point the guide is really able to get across. I got to ask him things that I’m sure everyone who looks at his amazing work will be wondering. If you are lucky enough to be able to visit the exhibition in New York or Brussels (with Amsterdam, Paris, Milan, Rome, etc on the way), then you’ll be able to hear what he told me in full. But for now, I’ve put together five surprises as a taster: Andrew Nugée, London. Parts of the job are inevitably dull, but the rewards can be simply wonderful. In the latter category, step up Nathan Sawaya. I recently interviewed the artist behind unique and powerful works created from Lego. Since he left his job as a New York corporate lawyer in 2004 to become an artist, Nathan’s exhibitions have broken attendance records all over the world. He called it living the dream, and says ‘The worst day as an artist is better than the best day as a lawyer’. But this was the first personal tour he’s consented to build for one of his exhibitions, and we grasped the opportunity with both hands, creating versions in Dutch and French 50

1. The bricks are glued together! I guess they’d have to be. It would not be great karma if the crate arrived at the gallery and there was … just a pile of bricks in the bottom. Even so, as he explained: “It can be a frustrating process where I have to step back, look at how the proportions are coming together and then if it doesn’t look right I actually chisel apart the Lego bricks.”

Lifestyle CULTURE 2. He built a life-sized Tyrannosaurus Rex for children “This took a whole summer”, he said. And he admitted he got mightily fed up with the T Rex at times. But he had a higher objective in mind: “After I’d done my first solo exhibition, I was shocked at the number of families and kids who came to this very contemporary art museum who had never been to an art museum before, and I thought you know what, I want to give back to all those kids who came to see this, I want to do something for them. So what do kids love? Well, they love dinosaurs.” 3. The pieces are hollow I just hadn’t given this any thought. As Nathan explained, his father was an engineer so thinking about how to create structures is in his genes. The pieces sometimes need internal support, but he builds the support out of … Lego of course. “A lot of folks ask about the internal structure of the sculptures and are they hollow. Actually, almost all the sculptures are hollow, they don’t need to be solid. In fact if they were solid they’d be so heavy it would be impossible to move them.”

4. He admires Duchamp You can see why, perhaps. “ ‘Duchamp’s Fountain’ is an important part of this exhibition. Of course when the original was debuted in the early 1900s, it caused an uproar because it was not considered true art and I’ve had to face that in my own art over the years; people saying that art out of Lego wasn’t true art. So I really wanted to include it in this exhibition, it was important to me.”

5. He plans his designs on specially created paper The great magic of the Lego sculptures is that he uses only square bricks, in uncompromisingly sharp rectangular shapes. But the sculptures that result are organic, they flow and they convey emotion. This transformation starts on brick paper. Brick paper? How cool is that? “I do sketch out things on what’s called brick paper. Brick paper is just like the graph paper we all had in math class, but instead of squares it has the rectangles that are the shape of Lego bricks, so I can sketch out on that brick paper and really have an idea of how the sculpture’s going to come together.” 51

Lifestyle LIVERPOOL INNOVATES

I

The Inventor

t never ceases to amaze me how innovative and tenacious the people of our fair city of Liverpool are. Meet Nola Baldwin, she is the inventor of Gloven – the new must have oven mitt. If you have ever used a bog standard oven mitt, which is a bit like using a folded pillow to get something out of the oven, you either can’t feel the sides of the hot dish you are moving and drop it, or in frustration, you grab a damp tea towel and get burned – I have done both. But there is an answer, a five fingered pair of oven mitts, that still let you feel the dish but you don’t get burned. Nola admits that to get her invention to market has been a crazy difficult journey, but she never gave up. And now she has now been in business for 5 years. “We have a brilliant product that has just brilliant reviews and to be honest the customers actually sell my product for me which is excellent. We have been seen on Great British Bake Off with Danny last year 2012 who was a doctor and Deborah 2013 this year the dentist and they both used them. We also were featured this year on Cook Me The Money on ITV and of course I have done the Dragon's Den which was fantastic as I met all of the Dragon's 56

- I was also on New Brands with Jo Malone and Britain's Best Dish, using the very first designed Gloven, which was awful but still worked! We have also featured on a German TV gadget show which was pretty awesome”. I think I could write a book on my Gloven journey but in a nutshell I love love baking

and cooking and was fed up of burning myself so I started looking for fabrics that were heat resistant and I could only find Nomex and Kevlar nothing else matches and I thought if it’s good enough for fireman and Formula 1 it’s got to be good for oven gloves!

WAR OF THE WORLDS

Jeff Wayne The man behind one of the most successful concept albums ever, chats with Joy Lewis The War of the Worlds, for me, is the sound of my childhood. My Mum played it constantly in the car and in the house; many a time I was woken up by the boom of the attacking Martians. I was incredibly excited to interview Jeff Wayne, so I once again visited his iconic album. I was immediately captivated by its spine tingling prose spoken over the eerie sounds of the martians invading earth. Now, Jeff Wayne is back with a new album War of the Worlds a New Generation featuring an updated cast, extended script and musical score. 94$Y*IH$)"2$'4'$P)*$O*2$T*&*+%0"&$/"1*$ %C"#($ %&'$ 2)>$ 1%D*$ %$ &*2$ 6*+,4"&$ "-$ ,#/)$%$C*7"6*'H$/7%,,4/$%7C#18 It was a slow burn. Lovehistory present the biggest and best fully interactive Murder Mystery dining experience, set within the grandeur of one of the city’s most famous buildings, 400 guests will be wined and dined and will bear witness to murders most foul in an evening filled with deception, intrigue and murder that will leave them baffled.

In true “whodunit” style, guests are encouraged to use their powers of deduction to piece together the crime, but be warned as crafty characters will do their best to misguide, deceive and obscure the truth. Guests will question and interrogate each character, piecing together the evidence, and eventually name the person responsible for this most heinous of crimes. It’s down to

the guests to catch the killer and decide their fate in this truly bespoke experience. Judy McLean director of Lovehistory said “These events are perfect for St George's Hall and very much in keeping with its rich history. Lovehistory are delighted to be back in 2014 for more unique and exclusive events”. Alan Smith St George’s Hall Manager said “The magnificent stage of St George’s Hall play host to the stunning performance of Lovehistory. A wonderful mood of nostalgia, excitement, and intrigue is created in the Great Hall as the actors bring to life for the audience a range of events and characters who are intertwined in a murder”. The first event takes place around Valentine’s Day and the Victorian era was a romantic time; prosperity fostered the dreams of a happily ever after, love letters,

hearts, cherubs and doves...but what about the darker side of love and romance in this seemingly lavish era? Lovehistory create a Victorian Valentines Ball like no other, where in a cruel and dark twist of fate, cupid’s arrow carries with it a more murderous message with real life stories of Victorian crime and passion. All characters will represent real life historical figures, from merchants to labourers, bachelors and debutantes and cold hearted killers, each of who will do their best to beguile and mislead. Join the victims and the characters from the past and piece together the mysterious events of the evening. Look out for twists and turns, deception and deceit and witness the harsh, brutal and often tragic, reality of Love and Romance. In true “whodunit” style, each section of the grand hall will be named after a much loved fictional detective; Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Morse, Phillip Marlow, Columbo, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot etc. During the course of the evening, guests will be given clues and are urged to keep their wits about them as this will be an evening filled with deception, intrigue and…murder most foul. Lovehistory will ensure that this event is a masterpiece in terms of Murder Mystery evenings and as the guests enjoy the finery, the food and drink and experience Liverpool’s murderous past with this truly interactive evening. THE LIVERPOOL LEGACY FUND The Liverpool Legacy Fund, will be training, mentoring and funding 24 local people to become entrepreneurs in the City during the course of 2014. The scheme is accepting applications for this now and the applicants will be selected by a panel of four local entrepreneurs from the North West.

T

he project was launched by ex Brookside actor SIMON O’BRIEN. Born and brought up in Liverpool, Simon began acting in 1982 in the first episode of Brookside. For the last thirty years he has successfully combined dual careers of acting and presenting. Simon says “I am delighted to be involved in the selection process for this entrepreneurship scheme and am looking forward to seeing people who may not normally have access to this kind of opportunity shine and create a great future for themselves in business.” The other 3 entrepreneurs are: ALISON JAGGER – runs her own Herbalife Health and Wellness Coaching Business from the Rodney Street Wellness Centre and is funding the project. She left a £6 per hour job 3 ½ years ago to start her Herbalife business from her spare bedroom and now has 535 Wellness Coaches in her team with an organisation that turns over a minimum of £90k per month. She says “I NEVER believed I

could run my own business. My life has changed beyond all recognition but now it is time to give something back to the community and I’m so excited about supporting and developing new entrepreneurs through the Liverpool Legacy Fund – if I can do it ANYONE can!” ANTONY STAGG – Has worked for a number of years delivering training to young people aged 14-24. Working with schools across Liverpool, Antony has helped a group of 6th form students at Alsop High School create their own business “Pear Productions” which still trades today 2 years on. Passionate about inspiring and helping people achieve Antony is working with inspirational figures from countries around the world including the U.S, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda as part of his new book, IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN TOO. Antony says “while there are signs of growth in the local jobs market there still remains a lot of young people who need to be shown a career in entrepreneurship. I am excited

to be a part of this project as it represents a huge opportunity for so many.” ZOE HUMPHRIES – mother of 3, spent 10 years being a successful entrepreneur in a Blue Chip company with a big salary, company car, private healthcare… at the expense of time with her children. Zoe decided to change her whole life, took voluntary redundancy to create a work/life balance, and set up her own business to make a difference supporting small businesses using her corporate experience. After giving birth to her 3rd child, Zoe created Networking Mums, a business community supporting women to be financially independent, achieve more, start and grow their business, connect, share and support each other. Zoe says, “my work is to break down the barriers stopping people from achieving their true potential, such as childcare concerns, to show more people that they CAN earn a living and a live the life they choose. I am proud to be part of the Liverpool Legacy Fund.” 69

introduced as a vehicle between the Housing Benefit Department and private landlords To help for a smoother system from tenants application, procedural protocol to successful payment and generally worked. Currently I am on the Landlord Advisory panel, which has been set up to decide whether a mandatory licence should be introduced in the Liverpool City Council Authority area. LUIS SUAREZ STAYING PUT WITH THE HELP OF

iverpool football fans could be receiving good news in the new year, courtesy of estate agency staff at Century 21 UK. Reports in today’s Liverpool Echo suggest that prolific striker, and key player for Liverpool FC, Luis Suarez, has been seen with his family window-shopping for property at the Century 21 office in Woolton Village, Liverpool. Rumours about Suarez’s future at the club have been rife in the past couple of seasons and it was expected that interested parties would again look to prise him away from the red half of Merseyside when the 72

transfer window opens in January. News that Suarez has been eyeing up property at the Liverpool South office could mean he is looking to put down more permanent roots in the area which would suggest a move away from Anfield is perhaps not on the cards. Dan Pennington, owner of Century 21 UK Liverpool South, commented: “Given the desirable nature of Woolton Village it’s not unusual to see the top football players based around here looking at the properties we have available. Rest assured we will be doing all we can to help Luis stay at the club and look forward to providing him with a first-class service should he be interested in any of our properties.”

Craig Phillip’s DIY...

Hello Lifestyle Readers!

It’s officially the new year; a fantastic time for new beginnings. My DIY tip this month will give some advice on how to spruce up your home and sort out that job you’ve been putting off! Last month was a busy time for me; especially around our own fair city! I hosted the Liverpool Echo’s Pride of Merseyside Awards alongside Hollyoaks’ Alex Fletcher, which was a truly incredible and humbling experience. Some of the inspirational winners included 85-year-old Joyce Wolfe who worked hard to help her neighbours stay independent in their own homes, and teacher Ian Mackenzie who dedicated himself to mentoring students with learning difficulties. The awards honoured the

FLATPACK FURNITURE TOOLS/MATERIALS t t t t t

Flatpack item with all fixings and instructions Glue Cordless drill and screw driver pieces Hammer Alan Keys

Everybody at sometime in their lives will have purchased a flatpack furniture item and had trouble putting it together. By following just a couple of basic tips it should make life easy and more enjoyable when it comes to erecting flat packs! First and foremost, always check that all the parts are included in the package. Empty them all out and cross check them with items list on the front page of the instructions. If any items are missing do not attempt to assemble it, just take it straight back to the shop.

74

Read all of the instructions carefully and start to lay out all items in the order of the instructions and check you have all the relevant tools required.

I was one of over 10,000 people who took part in Liverpool’s annual Santa Dash. What a sight that must have been; thousands of santas running through Liverpool city centre and we even attempted to set a world record! Other celebs that got involved included Olympic champion Beth Tweddle, Everton FC legend Joe Royle and X Factor star Chris Maloney. It was inspiring to see so many people taking part and having fun, all to raise money for charity. As always, I appeared on Ideal World promoting spray painting experts Wagner. If you are looking to redecorate your home this year, look no further as Wagner’s range of products make painting as quick and easy as possible. Designed to leave a professional finish, you are guaranteed to have results you are proud of. More information can be found at www.wallperfect.co.uk With the new year in full swing, I am looking forward to another exciting year and keeping you all updated right here. Until next time… All the best,

Craig Phillips

Start to put the sections of your flatpack together following each stage of the instructions, only as a dry run at this point. Even if the instructions say to glue sections together I would always recommend that you trial the assembly first until you are 100% happy with it. Then, take the item apart and glue all joints required. If you do make a mistake with glue it may ruin the entire item and the shop probably won’t take it back! One thing to remember when you have successfully finished putting your unit together; don’t be to alarmed if you still have some fixings left over. Some manufactures will supply a standard bag of fixings which cater for a number of units. For example, you may have purchased a 3 drawer unit and the bag of fixings are for both a 3 drawer and 5 drawer unit and you will be left with spare screws plugs ect just save them as extras.

Lifestyle MOTORING PORSCHE launches a special edition CAYENNE Porsche is upgrading the Cayenne six-cylinder model via a special series known as the Platinum Edition.

T

he Platinum Edition Cayenne and Cayenne Diesel models feature some especially high-quality equipment and offer many of the mostrequested options as standard. Externally, the special status of these models is demonstrated by the numerous detailed paint finishes in Platinum Silver Metallic, while an elegant ambience has been created in the interior with exclusive two-tone fittings. Porsche only assigns the Platinum Edition designation to its exclusive, elegant vehicle ranges that are available for a limited period only.

JEEP WRANGLERscoops top off-road honour for second consecutive year

T

he legendary Jeep Wrangler continues to demonstrate its award-winning credentials after taking 4x4 Magazine’s 4x4 of the Year, Hardcore class for the second year running. In awarding it top honours, the 4x4 of the Year competition judges praised the Wrangler’s value for money, comfortable interior, off-roading ability, towing prowess and iconic design. The diesel-powered, automatic Wrangler returns 34.9 mpg (34.0 mpg 4-door) on the combined cycle and has a CO2 figure of 213 g/km (217 g/km 4-door). Prices start at £27,315 OTR for the two-door 78

Wrangler 2.8 CRD Sahara, rising to £31,670 OTR for the four-door 2.8 CRD Overland Axle +. Now with lower emissions of 198 g/km together with fuel consumption of up to 37.7 mpg (combined), the new Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel range also offers real value in terms of running costs. The new Grand Cherokee range starts at £36,995 (OTR) for the 3.0 CRD V6 CRD Laredo, rising to £49,495 (OTR) for the 3.0 V6 CRD Summit.

ALFA ROMEO4c is fhm

Lifestyle MOTORING

magazine’s 2013 car of the year

T

he Alfa Romeo 4C has been named FHM Magazine’s 2013 Car of the Year. Alfa Romeo 4C has seen off significant competition to claim the overall victory in FHM’s inaugural Car of the Year awards, and the win highlights not only the appeal of the Alfa Romeo 4C to driving enthusiasts and petrol-heads. Designed, engineered and built in Italy as a pure driving machine, the mid-engined Alfa Romeo 4C is powered by a new, allaluminium, 240hp, 1750 Turbo Petrol engine and features Alfa Romeo’s latest-generation ALFA TCT transmission and Alfa D.N.A. driving mode selector - now with a new “Race” mode. The 0-62 mph sprint takes just 4.5 seconds and top speed is 160 mph,

but thanks to its light weight and advanced engine and transmission technologies, its official combined-cycle fuel economy figure is 41.5 mpg and its CO2 emissions are just 157g/km Priced from £45,000 OTR, the Alfa Romeo 4C will be available to order shortly, but with some customers putting their names forward when the concept was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011 most, if not all, of the UK’s production allocation for 2014 is already spoken for.

BAC mono T

he Mono, has been described as one of the most entertaining cars ever built. For petrol heads it is the ultimate road car, perhaps because it promises the ultimate driving experience. It has been designed for and by purists and uses the latest technology and engineering excellence. It is the world’s only single-seater road car, it has no-roof, no-windscreen, and is brought to you by the Cheshire-based Briggs

Automotive Company. It’s a phenomenally quick machine, thanks to a kerbweight of just 540kg and a 2.3-litre Cosworth engine developing 280bhp, it’ll dispatch the 0–62mph sprint in under three seconds and keep running all the way to a face rippling 170mph. Of course it’s as practical as

a chocolate teapot, but who buys works of art for practical reasons? What makes it even more special to us? It is currently in production in Liverpool. To own one of these you must have pockets deep enough to fork out, £79,000, which is a mere snip if you consider how much it’s going to cost to insure it.

Lifestyle THE LAST WORD WITH AMANDA MOSS

Hello 2014!

features
 content,
 we
 will
 be
 exploring
new
distribu+on

 and
 finding
 ways
 to
 engage
 both
 you,
 the

 and
 our

A

who

 will

 that
 I
 am
 the

 The

 I
 am
 s+ll
 on

 an
 exci+ng
 journey
 in
 which
 I
 don't
 want
 to
stop.
The
new
year
is
a
+me
 of

 not
 so
 much
 as
 a
 new

 but
 con+nued

 and
 I
 am
 fortunate
 to
 work
 with
 a
 dedicated

 and
 unbridled
op+mism.
So
2014
will
 con+nue
 to
 fuel
 our

 for
success. Lifestyle

 has
 con+nued
 to

 steadily
 in
 a

 6

 we
 have
 survived

This

 I

AOer
the

 it
 is
 only
right
that
the
kids
get
their
 say
 and
 as
 any
 parent
 knows,
 kids
are
the
boss! This
year
I
won't
be
undertaking
 predictable
 resolu+ons
 that
 I
 can't
keep.
I
won't
be
embarking
 on
 vigorous
 diets
 or
 planning
 mad
exercise
campaigns.
I
won't
 be
 puPng
 money
 into
 savings
 accounts
 for
 the
 kids
 that
 I
 fail
 to
 do
 every
 year.
 (I
 think
 they
 would
 far
 prefer
 to
 have
 family
 memories
 of
 holidays
 and
 days
 out) I
 will
 con+nue
 to
 juggle
 parenthood

 with
 business,
 family
 life
 with
 friendships,
 though
 they
 all
 seem
 to
 merge
 together.
I
will
con+nue
to
count
 my
blessings
for
having
a
husband
 who
tolerates
my
stubbornness,
 and
 amazing
 kids
 despite
 them
 ignoring
 my
 requests
 to
 plump
 up
my
cushions
on
the
sofas.

I
will
also
con+nue
to
enjoy
living
 in
the
best
city
in
the
UK.
Having
 resided
 in
 many
 over
 the
 years
 because
 my
 career
 has
 taken
 be
 around
 the
 country,
 I
 can
 say
that
being
part
of
the
city
of
 Liverpool
 is
 a
 privilege
 which
 I
 will
never
take
for
granted.
Our
 spirit
 is
 unsurpassable.
 Take
 this
 aOernoon
 for
 example.
 Preparing
 my
 daughter
 for
 her
 swimming
 lesson,
 she
 was
 crying
 because
 she
 didn't
 want
 to
 put
 her
 swimming
 cap
 on
 as
 it
 would
 mess
 up
 her
 hair
 (If
she
is
like
this
at
4
years
old
 what
 have
 I
 got
 coming
 at
 14!)
 At
the
same
+me
the
baby
was
 screeching,
 having
 just
 had
 her
 immunisa+ons,
 and
 the
 pram
 was
 overloaded
 with
 clothing
 and
 impossible
 to
 manoeuvre.
 A
 lovely
 woman
 came
 over
 to
 me
 and
 calmly
 helped
 me
 with
 my
 daughter's
 swimming
 cap,
 she
 refused
 to
 leave
 even
 when
 I
 said
 I
 was
 ok
 (I
 clearly
 was
 not,
 I
 was
 struggling).
 By
 the
 +me
 everything
 was
 under
 control
 again
 the
 woman
 had
 disappeared
 and
 I
 wanted
 to
 thank
 her
 properly.
 I
 thought
 "Only
 in
 Liverpool
 would
 this
 happen,
 any
 where
 else
 I
 am
 sure
 people
 would
 just
 have
 stared
at
me."
I
returned
home
 reminded
 once
 again
 of
 how
 lucky
I
am. Which
 brings
 me
 back
 to
 you.

 I
 hope
 your
 outlook
 for
 the
 coming
 year
 is
 exci+ng.
 Don't
 set
 impossible
 targets
 or
 unachievable
 goals
 and
 it
 will
 be.
Remain
fabulous
and
feisty.
