EDITOR'S LETTER

A NOTE FROM OUR AWARD WINNING EDITOR

October is of course Lambrini Liverpool Fashion Week in association with Nouvatan and Hair by Sleek & Laura's Hair World. This year we are holding it at the Royal Liver Building, kicking off on Monday 14 October with our Glam Couture Show. The full line up is online at www.liverpoolfashionweek.co.uk and tickets are available right up until the event (you can purchase tickets on the door if there are any left, but I advise to book in advance). With our resident DJs are Lee Butler and Steve Chocky, we couldn't have got a better line up and have got our party frocks and dance shoes polished, ready to show the rest of the UK just how fashionable Liverpool really is. It's a celebrity stacked issue, with an exclusive chat to Eliza Doolittle and I had lunch with my good friend Pete Price. (Can this man go anywhere without someone wanting to say hello and chat to him?) As the nights draw in, the coal is on order for delivery and I'm scouting for Christmas presents. Our shopping guide may give you a few early ideas as well. Settle down and enjoy your favourite free magazine for the region... and don't forget to put the clocks forward. Happy Halloween and stay stylish,

What’s happening this month...

THIS MORNING IS COMING HOME! This Morning returns to the Albert Dock for one show only on Thursday 3rd October to celebrate its 25th Birthday.

Lifestyle NEWSANDEVENTS On Thursday 3rd October This Morning’s hosts Phillip Schofield, Holly Willoughby, Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford will celebrate its Silver Anniversary by returning to its original Liverpool location for a mix of surprises and guest appearances - including original hosts Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan – during the live two hour programme.

NOTRE Dame Catholic College – is the first school to have benefited from Mayor Joe Anderson’s £169 million education investment programme when it opened in September.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “This is a great moment for the pupils and staff at Notre Dame Catholic College and I am absolutely delighted that it’s opening on time and on budget. Our young people deserve the very best facilities, and this school showcases some of the latest technology to make sure pupils get the most out of their learning.”

The £15 million building on Great Homer Street in Everton is part of the Mayor’s Investment Plan for Schools.

This signals the start of a significant transformation of this area of North Liverpool.

The funding - a combination of city council and Government money - will see at least 12 schools receive investment.

The new school is on the edge of the Project Jennifer regeneration scheme which is creating a new district centre around Great Homer Street.

Lifestyle COMMUNITY CITY SETS OUT AMBITIOUS CYCLING TARGETS LIVERPOOL IS LAYING OUT ITS AMBITIONS TO BECOME A LEADING CYCLE CITY, WITH NEW PLANS FOR ONE IN 10 OF ALL TRIPS TO BE MADE BY BIKE BY 2025.

The strategy – which has been developed by the Council, in consultation with Local Transport Plan partners, Liverpool Cycle Forum and other partners, lays out a range of steps which will be taken to encourage more people to cycle more often, including: t

t

t t t

The plans support the Mayor of Liverpool’s pledge to create a cleaner, greener city, and could help save over £1 million in reducing premature deaths and NHS costs, as well as delivering over £2 million of benefits in congestion and pollution reduction. It forms part of the Council’s Cycling Strategy for 2013-2026, which aims to build on the city’s recent success in cycling. Record numbers of people are now using bikes to travel around Liverpool, and the strategy aims to create a city where cycling is a normal choice of travel. Local people are now being invited to share their views on the strategy, and let the council know whether they ride a bike already or would like to ride a bike in the future.

Developing a safer cycling environment through the continuing investment in the city’s cycle network, with clearly defined routes and good quality facilities. Continuing to invest in speed reduction through campaigns such as ‘The 20 Effect’, which supports the on-going work to more than double the number of residential roads in the city with 20mph speed limits. Improved road maintenance, integration with public transport and cycle parking. Improved cyclist safety through training programmes and enforcement. The promotion of cycling through special events, rides and marketing campaigns.

Liverpool’s ambitions will be boosted by the launch, early next year, of its Cycle Hire Scheme. With 1,000 cycles available for hire at 100 stations, primarily in the city centre, it will be the biggest scheme in the UK, outside London, running 24-hour-hours-aday, seven-days-a-week. The city council is currently in discussions with a number of companies and expects an operator to be in place by the end of this year. Public consultation on Liverpool’s Cycling Strategy for 2013-2026 is now underway, and runs until 28 October. If you would like to have your say on the plans, please visit: www.liverpool.gov.uk/council/

So we got into the studio and wrote You & Me. been and what have you been up to? Hello Liverpool Lifestyle Magazine. Well, Disclosure caused a bit of a furore over after my tour finished for my first album I the Capital FM ball, because they were went into hibernation and started writing forced to mime, does this happen to for this album, so I could come back with a performers often? I always perform live. bang. It has taken a while but it was worth I know that Disclosure were really upset it….. I think. about the backlash that they received over Have you enjoyed writing this album as much as the first? Yes more so I think. I’m much more honest in this one, I’ve been on a bit of a journey, on my first record and album I was more tentative on what would be well received and I wanted to make everybody like my music. Now I am a little more confident as a person and a musician so this second album is more me. Where do you draw your inspiration from for your music? Myself and things I have seen or experienced. For this album I had so much in me and I needed to get it out, the tracks are more personal and honest because of that. You did a collaboration with Disclosure for the track “you and me”, how did that come about? We have a mutual friend, Jimmy Napes. When he started working with Disclosure, I think Howard had my

the Capital gig. They had no choice, and they made it obvious on stage that they were miming, they didn’t try to hide it. But, at the end of the day, it was a radio station gig and as they play your music you have to at least try and make them happy, because getting you music heard is more important. Yes I think this does happen to performers often, if I was in that situation I would do it their way for their gig and when I was doing my own tour I would do it my own way and play live. Would you do another collaboration? If so, if it could be anyone, who would it be? Andre 3000, there you go, haha defo him, no questions asked, he’s lovely. Are you coming to Liverpool on your album tour? Yes, but I don’t know when, sorry! But I’m on Facebook so I will let everyone know.

Miss Stylie

BY JOY LEWIS

Jade ‘ Miss Stylie’ Jackson stands tall as one of the leading female artists in Liverpool’s next generation of musical talent. Combining breath taking stage presence, insane lyric flows, and a vibrant persona which have drawn comparisons to M.IA, Ms Dynamite and Missy Elliot, Stylie has rocked stages from Glastonbury, Notting Hill Arts Club, Liverpool Soundcity, all the way to the Echo Arena. Releasing her debut EP ‘ Heavy Salad’ which features a collaboration with the Tea Street Band, she is currently working on her highly anticipated debut album set for a winter 2013 release.

HOWS THE ALBUM COMING ON? CAN YOU TELL US ANYTHING ABOUT IT? The album is getting written

as we speak. At the moment we are around 10 tracks in, experimenting with some new sounds, and some live instrumentation to present a body of work that is fresh, and something I can be proud of to bring people into my world for my debt offering.

WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES? Anything from jazz, blues,

reggae, through to HipHop, R&B, Drum and Bass, Indie and pop. The ears are always open, if it is good music, it is good music. For me, it's all about what is real and authentic. YOU HAVE BEEN COMPARED TO MISS DYNAMITE - HOW DOES THAT FEEL? Comparisons are cool,

however each artist is their own person, and we all have our own unique way of our

LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK

FACEBOOK.COM/MISSSTYLIE TWITTER.COM/OFFICIALSTYLIE

expressing ourselves. In the UK the media and music industry will often compare any female rapper to either Ms Dynamite, Lady Sovereign, Speech Debelle as a starting point to put something in a box and label as "female rapper". I don't like to label myself as anything or anyone, what you see is what you get. WHICH NIGHT ARE YOU PERFORMING AT LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK? ARE YOU BRINGING YOUR FANS? We are coming

to smash it on the Friday night, we will be performing brand new material for my fans, and to hopefully make some new ones.

WHATS IT LIKE TO PERFORM TO YOUR HOME CROWD? It is always a

blessing to perform in Liverpool, it's going through an explosive renaissance at the minute and it's a great time to be an artist in the city.

THE GLITTER BEATS

BY JOY LEWIS

The Glitter Beats are an exciting new female DJ duo. Formed by Tayla Richardson (DJ Tayla) and Osayuki Vanessa Omo-Uwamere (DJ Yuki Love). With their passion for music, fashion flair and down to earth nature they aim to conquer the male dominated DJ world. With plans to build up their profile and brand nationally and internationally, this is definitely an ambitious and fierce pair. Best of all? They are playing at Liverpool Fashion Week!

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR NAME - THE GLITTER BEATS?

From the first day that we met we knew we needed a name that would stand out from the crowd, so we had a massive brain storm of words to do with things that we liked and things to do with music. We came up with words such as bass, candy and of course glitter and beats. We tried lots of different word combinations, but loved The Glitter Beats as soon as we said it.

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU PLAY?

We mainly play house music, whether that’s commercial, deep, electro, funky, or any other type of house. Although, we do find ourselves playing other genres if we like the track. It’s all about loving the music you play, if we’re enjoying the music then it’s more likely that you’re enjoying it too.

WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING IN SUCH A MALE DOMINATED PROFESSION?

It has its ups and downs, it’s really nice to see people’s reactions to females behind the decks, but it’s not so great when you’ve got someone over your shoulder making sure you know what you’re doing every 2 seconds and trying to change it!

WHAT’S THE BEST PLACE TO START FOR A BUDDING FEMALE DJ?

We would say if this is definitely something you want to do then go for it, you need to be able to fully commit yourself in order to get the most out of it. Yes, it is a tough industry, but if you work hard enough then success should follow. And of course practice, practice, practice! You can get a cheap set of decks and teach yourself how to DJ by watching clips online. Our advice would be, always get someone to listen to your mixes though because what you can hear isn’t always what everyone else can hear!

WHAT NIGHT ARE YOU PLAYING AT LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK?

We’re playing on the closing night, Saturday 18th October. Liverpool Fashion Week is such a big deal and we’re so excited to be part of it this year. LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK

THE LOOK TO DIE FOR?

BIN THE BEDS

SUNBEDS ARE OUT OF FASHION IN LIVERPOOL Amanda Moss, organiser of Liverpool Fashion Week says: “The health and wellbeing of our models is of paramount importance and we’re delighted to be the first fashion week that has a complete ban on sunbed-using models. We want our models to look their absolute best, which means not putting themselves at risk of skin cancer or premature aging from the sunbeds.

Fashion-forward Liverpool is now setting another trend; by enforcing a no-sunbed rule at this year’s Liverpool Fashion Week. The brave stand will mean only models who have never used, or pledge to not use sunbeds, can be involved in the prestigious fashion event. This dramatic move is to support Liverpool City Council’s recently launched campaign, ‘The Look To Die For?’, which aims to halt the worrying number of young girls in Liverpool using sunbeds. Worryingly 50% of 15-17 year olds in Liverpool have used the sunbeds, compared to 11% nationally.

“We’re also aware of just how many young girls in the city are using sunbeds and we hope that by showing how gorgeous our models look at this year’s Liverpool Fashion Week, we will help sunbed users in the city realise they don’t need to get on the beds to look great. Our girls can still have that golden glow, but they’ll get it from a bottle, not from the beds.” Despite the fact that using a sunbed just once a month or more could increase the risk of malignant melanoma - the most serious form of skin cancer - two in five (40%) sunbed users aged 11 – 17 in the city, said they are using them at least once a week. The zero-tolerance policy means all models will have to sign a pledge agreeing to not use sunbeds during or after Liverpool Fashion Week. This bold step for change has been well received by models across the Merseyside.

Victoria Jane Davies, 31 years old, a model from Liverpool involved in this year’s show explains her personal experience with sunbeds: “The ‘Liverpool Look’ is grounded in the belief that being tanned is beautiful and so there’s this constant pressure to be tanned. I started using the sunbeds from a young age, once or twice a week to ensure I looked and felt good. It’s only as I’ve got older that my skin started to show the damaging effects of the sunbeds – they enhanced my lines and wrinkles and gave me more moles and freckles. As a model, I have to always have my best face forward and going on the sunbeds could have really ruined that.” Dr Paula Grey for Liverpool City Council said: “We can’t ignore the significant problem that Liverpool has with young people using sunbeds compared to many other parts of the country. Having the city’s fashion elite ban sunbeds will really help to drive awareness for the cause and engage with young people in Liverpool who look up to the models they see on catwalks.” For more information on The Look To Die For visit www.thelooktodiefor.co.uk or to join the Facebook community visit www.facebook. com/thelooktodiefor

ALISON MOYET

New single ‘Changeling’ released 14th October on Cooking Vinyl

Do you remember Alison Moyet? Think back to Top of the Pops, with her iconic long flowing coats and deep sexy voice, she was for many, the sound of 80’s. And now Alison Moyet is back, and at a svelte size 10, half the woman she once was. “The Minutes” is her 8th studio album and it has already been described as “a musical revelation.” So will you like this latest offering from her? Yes I think so, her voice is unmistakable and sounds even sexier than it used to. She switches effortlessly between modern and traditional - some tracks are big ballads and others are a mix of techno and dubstep - but on every track is Moyet’s distinctive voice. On 14th October Cooking Vinyl presents ‘Changeling’, the third single taken from

Alison Moyet’s critically-acclaimed album ‘the minutes’. The track “Changeling” finds Alison’s voice on typical strong and seductive form, with its powerful, experimental and dramatic style indicative of the boundarypushing album as a whole. The single will also be accompanied by a video. Alison’s UK headline tour will run from September 16th and throughout October. This tour places ‘the minutes’ centerstage, and will also focus on the significant electronic material in her back catalogue. Tickets are on sale now, 25 Oct Liverpool Philharmonic Hall nmoyet.com For more details and updates visit www.aliso and www.facebook.com/AlisonMoyet

THE SOUTH

- They’re still Beautiful ing to the Floral THE SOUTH are com 20th October on Pavilion on Sunday Tour! their Sweet Refrains

When the Beautiful South split up I was devastated. Their album, Carry on Up the Charts is still one of my favourite albums of all time, I play it regularly, and I know and sing every word from every track, loudly - out of tune mind. The Beautiful South for me was the sound of the 90’s, I grew up with these guys. So a little history here, to inform those few philistines who might not yet appreciate the wonder that was the Beautiful South. Formed in 88, they had a string of hits Old Red Eyes Is Back, Rotterdam, Don’t Marry Her, Perfect 10 and Number One single A Little Time. Their greatest hits album, the afore mentioned Carry On Up The Charts,

was one of the fastest-selling albums in UK history, entering at Number One and staying there for weeks, becoming one of the U.K’s most popular albums ever. Time was called on The Beautiful South in 2008. Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler, two of the three lead singers with the band, were having too much fun to get out the pipe and slippers, and so The South was formed. Their tour brings us a new collection of songs which will be performed alongside all the established favourites from their previous incarnation.

THE BANK

Liverpool’s business community turned out in force on Friday night to make The Bank Bar and Brasserie’s launch event a huge success. The venue, on Brunswick Street, invited some of the commercial district’s movers and shakers to an evening of ‘Fizz, Feathers and Frolics’ with a 1920s theme. Featuring a live jazz band and resident singer Louise Harper from this year’s X Factor, The Bank put on an impressive show for more than 80 guests drawn from surrounding businesses in the city’s thriving business district. Throughout the evening champagne, a selection of cocktails and canapés were served courtesy of head chef Mark Campion and his team as The Bank pulled out all the stops to make an instant impact on the city’s bar and restaurant scene. “The launch was fantastic and I would like to thank everyone who turned up for coming along and experiencing what we have to offer,” said Bank general manager Tom Kennedy. “A lot of people told me on the night they were very impressed with the quality of our food and service. Coupled with the relaxed feel of The Bank following our refurbishment, I believe we have created a venue people will want to return to time after time. “We look forward to welcoming the guests from our opening night back to The Bank, as well as the wider Liverpool dining public, as we aim to make every night as special as our launch night.” THEBANKBARANDBRASSERIE.CO.UK

MARK THOMAS - 100 Acts of Minor Dissent

Comedy with a distinctly political bite

comes to the Liverpool Playhouse Theatre 22nd October. Just in case you have yet to experience the hilarious satirical politics of Mark Thomas, I will tell you why his show is not to be missed! Primarily, he is really funny, which is good news, because he is a comedian. But what he is most famous for is his creative mayhem. Barely a month goes by when one of his latest stunts to highlight the U.K’s rather irritating political and tax system, doesn’t g

viral on Youtube. In short he is Private Eye but on stage in 3D. Over the last three decades, Mark Thomas has poked his nose into enough things to cause a politician to resign, arms deals to collapse, reform inheritance tax law, force the odd multinational to clean up its act a little and accidentally become Guinness World Record holder for political protests. The show 100 Acts of Minor Dissent is a catalogue of Mark’s acts from the smallest action to the grandest confrontations. The results are hilarious, subversive, mainly legal, occasionally inspiring and, most importantly, soon to be seen in the Playhouse Theatre Liverpool.

JUST YOUR AVERAGE MUSLIM – Just Your Average Muslim is a refreshing perspective that does away with many of the stereotypical views we have sadly become accustomed to. It has been described by Roger Phillips of BBC Radio Merseyside as a “must read for anybody interested in, or even concerned by, Islam and Muslims”. Given the number of current affairs, both national and global, that involve millions of Muslims, it is a book that

has arrived at a crucial time. One the one hand the book addresses non-Muslims and hopefully reassures them that not all Muslims are like those who seems to occupy so many negative headlines, whilst making the point that perhaps some Muslim grievances are real, rather than imagined. On the other hand, the book also addresses Muslims in a call for some honest self-criticism, concluding that maybe at the moment we are not fulfilling our responsibilities to the human race.

Hello Lifestyle Readers! The summer has well and truly drawn to a close and the beautiful weather a couple of months ago seems to be long gone! It’s back to the grindstone for many of us and September has been a busy month for me. I attended Toolfair, a regional trade show covering five venues across the UK, on behalf of Swedish workwear brand Blåkläder. A ‘hands on’ event where traders could see and test new tools and equipment, the show featured a range of exhibits from some of the top brands in the building trade. Blåkläder’s range include trousers, jackets and weather protective articles, all of which are comfortable and of the highest quality. They are my first point of call when it comes to buying workwear for all weather conditions. As always, I have been busy with leading paint equipment supplier Wagner, especially on popular shopping channel Ideal World. Their ‘Pick of the Day’ feature showcases some of the best products for around the home and Wagner regularly appears. Their Spraytech equipment guarantees speed and efficiency while making sure every coat of paint is evenly applied. Suitable for novices and professionals alike, their products make painting extremely straightforward. If you are thinking of redecorating your home, look no further! Finally, I was on Radio Five Live talking DIY, which was fantastic fun. It is certainly one of my favourite radio stations and it was great to be able to help out the listeners with some of my top tips! This year is flying by already and I have plenty of work that will keep me busy right up until Christmas! I’ll continue to keep you updated on everything that I’m up to every month right here. Until next time… All the best,

BUILD AND HANG A GARDEN GATE TOOLS/MATERIALS t t t t t t t t

Chop saw Drill/driver Countersink drill bit 3mm Tape measure Setsquare 4”x1” timber Screws Hinges and Latch

The benefit of constructing your own garden gate is that you can really be creative with its size and design. I chose to build a gate to match my garden fencing and created a point at the top of the gate to make it harder for intruders to climb over the top! Start by cutting the 4”x1” timber fence panels to length, creating a point for the top of the gate if you wish. Now lay the fence panels on the floor or a work bench, leaving a space between each panel. Using a chop saw cut a cross section piece of 4”x1” and screw it firmly across the width of the fence panels using a drill/driver and 40mm screws. To add to the appearance of your gate and to provide extra support you can cut and fit another cross section on a diagonal spanning across the upright panels and just touching the bottom of the cross members. Next, position both hinges where they will be fixed to the gate and drill pilot holes where the screws will be. Then, swap the drill bit to a screw driver piece and firmly drive the screws into the timber of the gate to secure the hinges. You are now ready to hang your gate and should repeat the above process to secure the free edge of the hinges to the gate post. Latch fittings and locks can be attached in the same way as your hinges.

Lifestyle PANTOMIME

Pantomime Fever is

getting underway in the city. (Oh no it isn't, oh yes it is) This time it's The Epstein with the launch of Snow White.

he star studded cast includes ex Hollyoaks Paul Danan, Chrissy Rock, Amanda Harrington and Herbert. Fresh from musical theatre school and landing her first major role is Laura Gregory (pictured). she told Lifestyle magazine, “ I have done loads of acting and singing at drama school but this is my first job and I am slightly nervous. When the call came through that I had got the art I couldn’t believe it, it still isn’t sinking in. What makes it even ore special is being in my home town. And I am really looking forward to engaging with the audience as that is what everyone says makes it so lovely being part of the pantomime. I am so thankful to be given the break.” Producer Lee Kelly returns to the Epstein for the second year and said he was delighted to be back. “When I was little I used to come here and I said to myself that one day I would

produce a show here. And here I am 18 years later dong just that. It’s my second year in an amazing venue It’s an absolute privilege and I am so excited about this year’s panto, we have a great cast and it’s going to be THE panto to watch.” Chrissy Rock returns to Liverpool to play the wicked witch. She has had a busy year juggling her her various TV and theatre roles and said she loved being back in Liverpool. “It’s the bets place for Christmas shopping.” She added. Ex Hollyoaks actor Paul Danan plays the prince and Amanda Harrington is the fairy. She said, “This is a new challenge for me and totally different than anything I’ve ever done before. I’ve done lots of television work, photo shoots etc but acting in front of a big audience is a bit daunting but I’m going to give it 100% and hopefully it will open more doors for me.”

Lifestyle COMEDY 2012 was a momentous year for Gina Yashere. She witnessed the triumph of the London Olympics... OK, from her couch in Los Angeles, but she still has much to say. She was able to finally let go of one of her biggest regrets; that she never got a Jim’ll fix it badge. She’s discovered that she’s a closet OCD sufferer and, most momentous of all, she was forced to purchase reading glasses. You better believe she has A LOT to say about that. BY JOY LEWIS

GINA YASHERE You are in the Liverpool Epstein Theatre on the 23rd October, have you been here before? I've been to Liverpool a few times on previous national tours I've done, and always had great audiences, so this time better not be any different! I have high expectations! Being such a successful female comedian is a rarity in this country, why is that? Is it harder to gain funny recognition as a woman? Don't get me started on that one. You don't have enough paper! Let's just say it's no wonder there are less successful females, with the constant 'women are not funny' stereotype still persisting. If I get another interview request about 'Are women funny?' - I will gouge my own eyeballs out with a spoon. What was it like to tour the states? Is it easier for comedians over there, female comedians at that? I enjoy touring the States, as it's unbelievable how different each one is. They are like mini countries, with their own customs and politics. And I love confounding them with my odd look and accent. Then turning all their preconceived ideas of what black comics are like on their heads. The racism and misogyny in the industry is even more pronounced than in the UK, so I'm defying the odds!! Has British comedy evolved while you were away? Nope. It seems that comedy is no longer how funny you are, and what you

have to say, but how young you are, how big and floppy your hair is. It's what I call MTV comedy. How do you come up with your material? Do you see comedic situations everywhere, like in the supermarket or just walking down the street? Or is it a case of staring at the wall waiting for inspiration? Material can come from anywhere. Something I've read, something that annoys me, conversations with friends or family. Stuff that I've seen or that has happened to me. It's all fair game! I’ve read recently that lots of people who perform live on stage have alter ego’s that allows them to get up and perform, to say and do things that they wouldn’t normally do. Is this the same as you? Nope. With me, what you see is what you get. I'm just a slightly heightened version of myself. I'm obviously not like that ALL the time. I would be insufferable. I hate comedians who are 'on' all the time. They are often the most insecure, as they have no confidence in their own personalities. OMBUDSMAN COMPLAINTS Mayor Joe Anderson said: “We are a large FALL AGAIN • Complaints about Liverpool City Council to Ombudsman reach new low THE number of complaints made about Liverpool City Council to the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) has fallen to a new low – and is down by almost half since 2010. In her annual letter to the city council, Chair of the Commission for Local Administration in England, Dr Jane Martin, reveals there were 90 enquiries in 2012/13. This is down from 138 the previous year, and 171 in 2010/11. It equates to a drop of 47 percent over the last three years. And of the 90 cases received in 2012-13, city council records show there were only 43 in which it was asked to take action - down from 66 in 2011-12. We will continue to learn lessons when things go wrong.”

The top three areas for complaints to the city council were: t Domestic waste and recycling collections – 923 (out of 22 million collections). t Taxi driver behaviour – 453 (out of 4,662 hackney and private hire drivers). t Council tax – 422 (out of 208,000 bills issued).

NEW DRIVE TO GET CHILDREN READING FOR PLEASURE

to have improved life opportunities and go on to secure a decent job. We owe it to our children to do all we can to make this happen.

In partnership with the National Literacy Trust, a Liverpool Reading Quality Mark is being developed - with 22 schools initially - focusing on promoting reading for enjoyment.

The three infant, 13 primary, one special and five secondary schools taking part in the pilot have been selected for their outstanding work promoting reading for pleasure and involving parents in supporting their child’s learning.

A recent study conducted by the Institute for Education found that children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers. It follows the publication of ‘From Better to Best’ by the Liverpool Education Commission. It recommended that no child in the city, if capable, should leave primary school unable to read. All the evidence shows that children who have better literacy skills are more likely

The pilot will feed in to the Year of Reading 2014, spearheaded by the Liverpool Learning Partnership in which schools support and challenge each other. Cllr Lana Orr has recently been appointed by Mayor Joe Anderson as Mayoral Lead for Reading and will be working alongside the Learning Partnership on the project.

Lifestyle MUSIC LIFESTYLE MONTHLY TALKS TO...

Tyler Mensah BY JOY LEWIS

A born star, teenage singer songwriter Tyler Mensah has been performing since age 3, often caught on camera by family members crooning into his toy microphone and performing around his home. By the time summer 2013 kicked in, Tyler was travelling up and down the UK performing at various showcases and festivals, ending the summer achieving another huge accolade when he was nominated for the Young Artist of the Year Award at the Liverpool Music Awards 2013. HI TYLER, CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR MUSIC? I write

about everyday stuff like love, having a good time and my aspirations but I like to be thought provoking as well. For example on my debut EP 'Twenty4seven' I have songs about unrequited love like "Superman" as well a song that touches on political matters, "Let It Rain". WHAT GIVES YOU THE INSPIRATION TO PEN SUCH SOULFUL LYRICS? I get

inspired all the time - whether I'm playing around on my guitar, watching TV, sitting on the train or just talking to friends. My Dad is a musician and I get a lot of inspiration and ideas from him. WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP YOUR LOVE OF MUSIC? From as early

as I can remember. I used to perform around the house from such an early age. Music and performing has always been something I've been doing.

YOU HAVE JUST RECENTLY BEEN NOMINATED FOR THE MICHAEL MOLLOY YOUTH AWARD, HOW DOES THAT FEEL? It was such an honour

to be nominated as a 15 year old up and comer. The award means a lot because of who it is dedicated to! I am really proud of my achievements so far but the best is yet to come.

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?

My parents inspire me a lot. However artists that inspire me are Drake, Usher, Frank Ocean, Justin Beiber and of course Michael Jackson. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE WISH FOR YOUR MUSIC CAREER WHAT WOULD IT BE? To win a grammy award. WHATS IT LIKE TO HAVE BUILT AN ARMY OF FANS BY THE AGE OF 16? DO YOU GET RECOGNISED EVERYWHERE IN LIVERPOOL NOW?

I am very focused on my music and try not to get too distracted by all that but I am very grateful to anyone who come to my shows, downloads my music. I know there would be no music career or talk of a music career without these people. I HEARD THAT YOU ARE PLAYING AT LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK, WHAT NIGHT? WHAT WILL YOU BE PLAYING? Yes I am performing on opening

night at Liverpool Fashion Week and I am really excited about that. I will be playing material from my EP plus a couple of surprises. Hope to see you there!

Lifestyle MUSIC “WHAT THE BUTLER SAW” Lifestyle Magazine is abuzz with excitement over our latest news, and we simply cannot keep it to ourselves any longer. We have a new columnist see. But it’s not just any columnist, it’s the rather dashing and dapper DJ Lee Butler. Not bad hey? Lee’s new column will be appearing next month, “What the Butler Saw” where he will keep us abreast with all his latest goings on, all the gossip, scandal and clubland jangle. But before then Lee and Steve Chocky will be gracing Liverpool Fashion Week with his DJing skills When did your love of music start? I was swept away by house music and was a full on raver when the dance scene erupted in 1989 – music, buying vinyl and wanting to be a dj was the goal. Getting my 1st set of decks was a starting point but getting gigs was the next step, passing out demo mixes was all well and good but getting a gig was tough. Picture the scene, a pub in Cantrill Farm (now known as Stockbridge Village), someone's 21st, a buffet (the sausage rolls were stale) and a big massive fight at the end, yes... that was my first ever gig in the Phoenix, what a way to start your career! But it was at the State where you made your name? Yep and that was where I came up with the now legendary Monster Jam nights The State will always be close to my heart. Locking out every weekend and with a very special party atmosphere The State is legendary amongst Liverpool clubbers. What came next? The Buzz club in Lime St. The State then closed down within 6 months of me leaving! It was at the Buzz I started my crazy club night's “Best of British,” every dance fan was playing my tapes on the car stereo

as they drove around the city. Then Club 051 came in with an offer I couldn't refuse. So I made the move from Lime Street to Mount Pleasant and the 051 was the new place to be. Again it is no coincidence that within 6 months of me leaving the Buzz, it closed its doors for good. Club 051 was packing them in, and the new buzz on the streets was a phenomenon called Sexy Medicine, locking out every sat night to over 2000 screaming clubbers with flags with my name on for the big Battle of the heavyweights night to the live broadcasts on the clubzone every Sat night in 1997 - the rest is history, I rode the crest of a wave. So the next step was Radio? Yep, Plastic Surgery show was born when I started my show from Radio city’s new home - St Johns Beacon. It became The North West's most listened to Friday Night Dance Show and so “Lee’s Saturday night show” was born. I’m on every Friday night at 10pm - midnight and Saturday night between 9pm - 1am playing to the masses on Liverpool’s Hit music station Radio city 96.7. So tune in and turn the volume up!
