Sitting in a room full of inspired performers where poetry escaped their lips as if it could not be bottled up any longer was an empowering experience. I had an epiphany as their lyrical words poured over an audience of enraptured, excited listeners. I suddenly knew what it was like to be alive in the Romantic era where poetry was celebrated as though it was a new episode of Gray’s Anatomy. Poetic tempers ran wild, and it was the palpable passion that made that time period so successful. It’s good to know that passionate, deep poetry is not lost on our generation. Daniel C. Ramos has made sure to keep poetry’s lifeblood flowing. His devotion to poetry led him to start Amarillo’s own team of slam poets. It began as a small 3-man group project, but it has since grown exponentially. With funding coming out of his own pocket, he powered out “Slamarillo.” And it caught people’s attention. Soon, others were pitching in, venues were making slots for his poetry, and other poets were jumping on the bandwagon, bringing the poetic goods. Now, their weekly open mic night at the 806 cafe on 6th street draws in a cozy crowd. There is a general respect for the performers and much crowd involvement. I’ll even admit that after a powerful performance, I was moved to my feet, near tears, applauding like it was the only thing I knew how to do. The energy is a thing of beauty. With a band of poetic followers, Daniel has managed to keep poetry alive through poetry slams and open mic nights. “Seeing Daniel perform made me start doing this. He got me on the mic,” claims close friend, Sunny Alexander. And it’s a good thing he did because Sunny delivered a high-energy, entertaining act last Tuesday at the monthly slam. Her act preceded the actual slam, but she got the evening started with her vibrant act. The poetry slam consisted of competing poets, featured out-of-town poets, and an open-mic poetry segment. The competing poets were given three minutes to recite their poem and then judged by selected members of the audience. After two rounds, the poets were weeded out to the three high-scorers who then fought for the grand prize in the final round. The winner was Terri Morgan, a teacher at Caprock High and affectionately nicknamed “Mama Morgan” by fellow poets. Probably the oldest competitor at the slam, the poet tugged at everyone’s heartstrings. Through all of the poets’ performances, the audience was sent through a fierce emotional journey. There were times

of uncontrollable laughter, gutwrenching sadness, gospel singing, and general poetic camaraderie. So if you’re looking for great poetry, heartfelt performances, or just a good time… look no further. Go catch a poetry slam the second Tuesday of every month at the Amarillo Repertory Theater (next one is the Feb. 10), or visit the weekly open mic night at the 806 cafe on Wednesdays. Good music, good poetry, good artists… Rest assured, Amarillo. Poetry is not dead. It is alive and well, and it doesn’t look like it’s going down without a fight.

Belly Dancing In Amarillo! By Amy Baucom Ask any member of Raks Baladi what the term Raqs Sharqi means, and they will most likely respond with “belly dancing”. Actually, Raqs Sharqi, when translated from Arabic, means Oriental Dance, but to this local belly dance troupe, it means fun, plain and simple. Raks Baladi celebrates its fifth year this February, and welcomes everybody from all walks of life to join in and learn the art of Belly Dancing. Created in 2004, the Troupe first started out at the annual Shakespeare In The Park, but then moved to the Western Horseman Lounge in the Kiva Hotel in Amarillo. Started as a way for local belly dancers to express their art form and grow as a group, Raks Baladi originated with just six members, but grew to sixteen before long. Their show, Amarillo Raks, has two acts, with brief intermissions. Everybody is welcome to come and join in, and dancers from as far away as Dallas, Tucumcari, New Mexico, and Oklahoma City have danced with Raks Baladi. The group does solos, duos, trios, and is one of three belly dance troupes in Amarillo. Group members Linda Hayhurst and Shelly Stephens are quick to point out that belly dance is an ancient, respected form of dance, and does not include stripping. It is good exercise, and fun too. Different dancers subscribe to different theories as to the origins of belly dance. Some say it originated in Greece, beginning with Alexander the Great, while others believe it spread from migration of the Romani, and northwestern India. Whatever its true origin, belly dance has its own unique style and grace. Western women began to learn and imitate the Middle
www.amarilloscene.com Eastern dances after the Middle East had come under European Colonization. Mata Hari, usually associated with Javanese dance, is actually linked to Middle Eastern form of dance. Historically, most belly dancing was performed with ladies separated from men, and few depictions of mixed dancing (men and women), exist. But men are encouraged to participate in Raks Baladi. Each member of Raks Baladi has a stage, or dance name, including: AliZanne, Phaedra, Mileka, and Cherie Amore. Their props include veils, swords, wings, zills or finger cymbals, candles, canes, baskets and several other different props to make their act interesting and exciting for everyone. Raks Baladi can be hired for parties, celebrations, school functions, etc. Schools and Nursing Homes are accommodated free of charge, while a nominal fee is charged for private parties. Rates are based on number of dancers, songs and dances. Their fees are reasonable, and always worthwhile. The current members of Raks Baladi include Shelly Stephens, Carla Carney, Linda Hayhurst and Sheri Barr. The Troupe has a combined total of 46 years and six months of experience between the members, with Hayhurst having thirty years under her veil, and Sheri, the newest member, with six months of experience. Raks Baladi is open to all ages, and they practice together once a week, but members are encouraged to practice on their own every day. The Troupe performs free of charge at the VFW the first Monday of every month, with shows beginning at 7:30 pm, and going sometimes until past 10 pm. Next time you’re on the lookout for something entertaining, remember Raks Baladi. Maybe you will be moved to join in the fun!

Suggestions For A Memorable Valentines By Amy Baucom Valentine’s Day, February 14th, is the day that, tradition holds, lovers give their beloved tokens of affections for each other. Some of these tokens include flowers, candy or confections, and jewelry. Many men and women pop the question on or around Valentine’s Day, while other couples may choose a romantic getaway or a bouquet of flowers to express their love. Shelton’s Flowers and Gifts offers an array of arrangements, including balloon bouquets and gifts to help you show your love for that special someone. And remember, roses don’t come only in red. There are many different colors of roses, each with their own traditional meaning. Valentine-themed arrangements include the everpopular bouquet of roses, with red being the most requested, although sometimes, pink and white are included. Also, tulips or lilies are sometimes requested. The biggest Valentine item at Shelton’s is a 3 foot hot-air balloon arrangement. It has a basket beneath the balloon, in which all sorts of candies, gifts and other goodies can be tucked into for that special someone. This balloon bouquet makes a big entrance, and is sure to delight the recipient. Shelton’s Flowers and Gifts is located at 7100 SW 45th in Amarillo, and their phone number is 806.358.3676, or visit their website at www. sheltonsflowersandgifts.com If an engagement is on the agenda, there are several fine jewelry stores in Amarillo that cater to couples looking for wedding sets and engagement rings. Brad Ferguson, owner of Samaritan Arts Jewelry, has custom-designed jewelry for over 28 years. With themes ranging from Purity rings, Crown of Thorns jewelry and Christian wedding rings, Brad says that he sees approximately a 30percent jump in wedding and engagement rings around Valentine’s Day. Brad’s custom work is based on customer request, and although he does have some Celtic-themed jewelry, his main sellers are the Purity Rings, Crown of Thorns design, and Diamond Engagement rings. He also has a few carousel designs, and Texas themed jewelry. Located at I40 and Georgia, Brad is a nationally-known jeweler, and all his work is done in store. If you are in need of an Engagement ring for that special someone or, wedding bands too, then Brad can help you find the right one. More of Brad’s work can be seen at http://www.samaritanarts.com/ Planning on making it an evening of romance? Look no further than Canyon, just minutes from Amarillo and home to West Texas A &M University. Quiet, and charming, the town boasts a gem of its own. Hudspeth House, located at 1905 4th Ave. in Canyon, is the perfect place to go for a Valentine’s get away.

F E B R U A R Y 2 0 0 9 • 7A Built in 1909, it was ordered from a Sears Roebuck catalogue. Miss Mary Hudspeth was deeded the house in 1913 as repayment of a loan during the drought of 1912. (Now, owners Jill and Van Shelton have turned the 10-bedroom, 10-bathroom home into a charming Bed and Breakfast. The charm of the 100-year old house is evident the moment you step up onto the wrap-around porch with its porch swing and rocking chairs for relaxing in the mornings and evenings, as the days start and end. In the parlor, one can see original German-made chandeliers brought back from Germany when Miss Hudspeth was on sabbatical, as well as a cushioned window seat, stained glass windows and wood floors. The mix of old and new furniture, high ceilings and dormer windows make this Bed and Breakfast comfortable, yet elegant. Of the ten bedrooms, seven are available for guests, including The Cabin, which used to be the servants’ quarters; James’ Loft with both a Queen and a King bed, and the Lighthouse, a small bedroom on the third floor with a claw foot bathtub right in the bedroom. Hudspeth House has wood floors throughout, with two magnificent staircases, and gorgeous furnishings in every room. The Sheltons offer a breakfast at 8:30 am every morning, and tea and cookies every afternoon. The guests are welcome to mingle in the parlor, over the breakfast table or afternoon refreshments, or enjoy visiting on the spacious porch. Hudspeth House gets approximately 90 percent of their business because of the play, Texas, in nearby Palo Duro Canyon. Their peak season for guests is June through August, and guests from Germany, the Netherlands and the Ukraine have stayed and enjoyed the Shelton’s hospitality. Their rates vary from $90-$145 per night, and advance reservations are welcome but not required. The Hudspeth house is ranked #1 in Canyon on www.tripadvisor.com and they are currently running a special through March of 10% off, (excluding Valentine ’s Day). For their Valentine’s Special, they offer a chocolate fountain, fruit, cookies, sparkling cider or champagne for their guests to indulge in and enjoy. Check out their website for more information: www.hudspethinn.com Whatever you decide to do for Valentine’s Day, whether it’s proposing marriage, a weekend getaway, or a beautiful bouquet of flowers, there are a wide variety of choices available to make it an extra-special day for everyone.

The Ashmore Inn has teamed up with Schacolad, and is helping to make a Valentine’s getaway simply delicious. Schacolad’s chocolate-lined champagne flutes and a box of chocolates are included in Ashmore Inn’s Valentine’s Day packages.
Sweets For The Sweet By Amy Baucom It is said that the Aztecs first coined the term chocolate, and associated it with Xochiquetzal, their goddess of fertility. Is it any wonder then, that chocolate is popular with those in love? For the seriously chocolate addicted, one need look no further than Schakolad chocolate factory. Owners DeRima and Gary Johnson run the Amarillo store, part of the Schakolad franchise, which is based out of Florida, and features everything imaginable made out of chocolate. Customers are treated to the scent of warm, melted chocolate the minute they walk through the door, and new customers are offered a sample of either dark or milk chocolate as they peruse the varieties of sweet goodness before them. Schakolad is located at 3300 Soncy, suite 300 and their phone number is 806-331-2626
The Ashmore Inn, located off of I-40 behind the Cracker Barrel Restaurant, offers their guests a choice of three packages: The Queen Of Hearts Package, available for $119.00, offers deluxe King Guestrooms, turn down service, Valentines Poem, gourmet Schakolad chocolates, sparkling cider and a deluxe continental breakfast. Their King of Hearts Package, available for $159.00, includes bath products from Canyon Creek Soap Company, one dozen red roses, and other surprises. The Ace of Hearts package offers a Deluxe King Suite, with all the other goodies, plus some extras, that are included in the other packages for $199.00. Ashmore Inn and Suites prides itself on quality and customer satisfaction. If you would like to bring your own champagne or other treats with you, leave them at the front desk 24-48 hours prior to your arrival, and let them know when to expect you. The ashmore staff will set the tone for an unforgettable evening.
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, DeRima and her staff have been cranking out heart-shaped boxes and baskets all made of chocolate. Champagne flutes, rimmed in chocolate and filled with dipped strawberries or cherries provide a whimsically romantic touch, while Valentine-themed truffles fill the edible boxes and baskets.
Or, try their Hospitality Hour, Monday through Thursday from 5:30-7:00pm, which includes beer, wine, cocktails and light snacks such as popcorn, pretzels and Chex mix.
Everything is made right in the store; the chocolate melting machine itself is a wonder, with warm, melted chocolate flowing lazily into the large bowl. There are no oils or waxes used in the chocolates at Schakolad, and the chocolate baskets take about an hour to make before it is filled with truffles, dipped strawberries which come in milk, dark or white chocolate, or other treats. The main sellers at Schakolad are the Cheesecake Ganache Truffle, Gelatos, which is an Italian confection, and the Grand Mariner Ganache Truffle. There are over seventy varieties of truffles to choose from, and the Johnsons also offer truffle trays and chocolate fountains for weddings and other special occasions.
The special Valentine’s packages are available every weekend through the month of February, because the Ashmore knows that not everyone’s schedules allow for Valentines weekend itself. Make your reservations as soon as possible. Ashmore features only the best, so quantities are limited. Visit Ashmore Inn’s website at www.ashmoresuites-amarillo.com for more information.

When you relax in front of the television and become very involved in the story you are watching, your brain waves slow down from the more active Beta waves to the slightly slower Alpha waves. When you are in this Alpha state, your mind is more open to suggestion. That is why commercials are so effective. Before you know it, you have to go into the kitchen to find a Hershey’s bar, because it looked so delicious on TV.

Breaking Past The Myths Surrounding Hypnosis By Lori Lambert-Williams, CHT, LMT Owner of Hypnosis Specialists and Lambert-Williams Enterprises, LLC We’ve all seen it in television and movies: the young damsel walks with her eyes closed, following the evil magician, who has mesmerized her with his hypnotic gaze. The comedy “Office Space” portrays a young man who goes to a Hypnotherapist to deal with his stress. In the middle of the hypnosis session, the hypnotist dies of a heart attack. The young man remains hypnotized through the rest of the movie, which results in a hilarious series of calamitous events. Some of the myths surrounding hypnosis include that hypnosis is sleep, or that only people with low intelligence are easily hypnotized, or that one can get “stuck” in hypnosis, or tell secrets, or even that the hypnotist controls the hypnotized subject, who is unable to move or open his or her eyes. None of these things are true. Many of my clients ask me if there is a conflict between hypnosis and Christianity. As a former missionary who spent nearly 16 years of my life in foreign fields, I believe there is absolutely no conflict whatsoever! The relationship between the conscious and subconscious minds is the way we were created. In my work with clients, hypnosis has provided a healthy, drug free way to overcome a multitude of issues, some of which are lifethreatening. Proverbs 23:7 tells us “As a man thinks, so he is.” The Bible has many references to the importance of our thoughts, which support current knowledge that by visualizing your life as you wish it to be, you can actually create that reality. So what is hypnosis, really?
Hypnosis is simply a state of focused
Contrary to popular belief, the hypnotist does not control you. “Oh, yeah?” you might ask. ”“What about the people who do funny, even embarrassing things up on stage with the stage hypnotist?” Believe it or not, on a subconscious level, those people really do want to perform the antics the hypnotist has asked them to perform. Hypnosis cannot make you do anything that you really don’t want to do. The truth is, your subconscious mind is very “survival-oriented.” It is there to protect you, and will not accept suggestions that command you to do” anything that goes against your desires, morals, or beliefs. You are never under the control of the hypnotist! And because you are not under the control of the hypnotist, there is no more danger in being hypnotized than there is in listening to a sales presentation, a sermon, or a political speech. Hypnosis has been called the most pleasant, relaxing, and least dangerous of all types of therapy. Historically, hypnosis has been used by all cultures for millennia. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks had “sleep temples” in which hypnosis was used for therapeutic, medical and religious purposes. Suggestions were given to the subject while in a sleep state. Regardless of how it was used, in every case, the success of hypnosis always depended (and still depends) on the subject’s belief, and the power of suggestion. So, what can Hypnosis do for you? Hypnosis can help with insomnia, pain, improve memory, and help you reach your goals more easily. It is used most commonly for the elimination of bad habits such as smoking, overeating, procrastination, nail biting, nervous habits, shyness, anger, stuttering and twitching. Self-improvement is another goal for many people, who find that hypnosis boosts their self-confidence, helps them to like themselves better (who doesn’t need that?!!) provides energy and motivation, increases memory and concentration skills and gives many a more positive attitude! Fears and phobias can often be eliminated or greatly reduced through hypnosis. This includes fear of flying, fear of water, public speaking, claustrophobia, even dental anxiety! Hypnosis is used every day by medical and mental health professionals worldwide to aid relaxation, to reduce

www.amarilloscene.com addictive cravings, to assist in developing positive new habits and mindsets, to manage anxiety and depression, to retrieve memories, to prepare for surgery and to control pain (both chronic pain and the pain of medical treatments), and to assist people to deal with a myriad of individual issues. Want to improve your sports skills? Hypnosis is the way to go! Most famous athletes use hypnosis and visualization to drastically improve their abilities. By imagining themselves getting that hole-in-one or making that basket, it becomes a reality. A well-trained hypnotist or Hypnotherapist can help you reach your goals. Have you been trying to lose weight with limited success? Hypnosis can help. Losing weight is generally a long-term process, and it is a rare person who can lose large amounts of weight with just one hypnosis session. This is because we have all had many years of prior programming that led to our weight problems in the first place. So how can hypnosis help you lose weight? By instilling the subconscious desires and tools to keep you motivated over the long term. Each week, you will work on a different goal, with each goal building on the one before it. And if you have a weight loss program you’d like to try, such as Weight Watchers or South Beach Diet, hypnosis can motivate you to stick with it to reach your goals! How do you find a qualified hypnotist? Many physicians and counselors will be the first to admit that they have received minimal, if any, training in hypnosis. Be sure the hypnotist you choose has been certified and trained by a qualified organization, such as the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association, the National Guild of Hypnotists, or the International Association of Counselors and Therapists, just to name a few of the better-known organizations. The hypnotist should really talk to you prior to the hypnosis session to be sure that he or she truly understands your issues and/or goals. Each session should be individualized just for you. It is also very helpful if the hypnotist records the session and gives you a copy of the recording so that you can use it afterward as positive reinforcement and self-hypnosis training.

www.amarilloscene.com great strides Bo goes through to ensure the people of Amarillo the best selection of wine that is possible.
In Vino Veritas...In Wine, Truth By Lesandra Botello Crush, Amarillo’s newest wine bar and deli, never ceases to amaze me. Every time I think it can’t get any better, I learn something new about it, and suddenly it climbs a new rung on the respect ladder. The place is a gem, shining out from its popular corner in the hubbub of downtown bars on 7th and Polk. The dark maroon colors and low lighting are just the outer shell of the attraction of the cozy, inviting bar. Once inside, take care to notice the fantastic music streaming out into the crowd of people immersed in good conversations. The music doesn’t blare down your eardrums. In fact, it just gently begs to be noticed. You won’t find a bar with music this good anywhere in town. You won’t find a bar that has a lot of things that Crush has. Crush offers a unique experience for both novices and veterans in the wine-drinking world. Bo Salling, co-owner of Crush, rock star, and wino extraordinaire says the inspiration behind Crush lies in his notion that “Amarillo needed a place to shop for wine, where the staff is courteous, knowledgeable, honest, and not snobby.” This is a sentiment confirmed by fans of Crush. Tyler Rich is a regular at Crush, implementing a usually weekly (if not more) visit to the bar. “The thing I like about Crush is its atmosphere. It’s un-intimidating yet sophisticated.” He explains.
Another thing unique to Crush is their innovative system of keeping wines on tap. Crush offers over 50 different wines on tap that they rotate often to give customers a versatile wine experience. They use the Italianmade, Enomatic Wine Serving Systems which allows them to efficiently price wine, while still preserving the integrity of the wine itself. Now… to the “deli” part of Crush. Besides having a ridiculously wide range of cheeses to pair your wines with, Crush offers many other delectable foods that go hand in hand with wine. Deliciously seared scallops, roasted sea bass, and even Shiner Bock infused sausages all make claims to the menu. If you happen to be downtown for lunch, Crush dominates in the delicatessen sandwich domain. Try their Eggplant and Portobello sandwich and prepare to be blown away. Or even their Turkey and Jalapeno sandwich… that’s

The hospitality of the staff is quite remarkable. They’re well trained, and they seem to know exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re unsure about what wine to order, they’re always there to offer you a delightful new wine. I’ve yet to be unimpressed with their selections. Maybe it’s because of the
He makes sure that Crush gets new wines in every week from over a dozen different distributors around the state. The distributors range from larger companies with extensive wine profiles to small companies focused on a particular style of wine. Bo tends to lean toward the smaller, family-owned wineries when deciding what wines to supply Crush with. The goal is to ensure that customers of Crush are getting the best wines available. Bo factors in taste, price, and quality when making the executive wine decisions. Bo let me sit in on one of his many wine tastings, and the sheer velocity of wine that he was subjected to tasting was the butt of many jokes of his. “See how hard my job is?” He kidded. But it’s a job that someone must do to make Crush’s wine selection unbeatable. You won’t find a more comprehensive wine selection than that of Crush.

www.amarilloscene.com fantastic, too. Come to think of it, I haven’t had a sandwich there yet that hasn’t made me want to eat up every crumb. Their menu is nothing short of exquisite. And the last rung on the ladder for me was climbed on Saturday, around 11:30 AM. Oh yes. Crush does brunch. It is probably the only place in town with good sense enough to serve mouth-watering Eggs Benedict (I had mine over the smoked salmon) alongside a tasty mimosa. They alter their menu slightly every week, but they always keep appetizing egg dishes on the menu for their brunches. If you want something a little extraordinary for your Saturday brunch, Crush is the only place to be. Not only is Crush a wine bar and deli, but it is also a retail wine shop. Their wines are competitively priced and diverse in choices thus making them good gifts… to oneself or to a loved one. So try Crush out. Go there on February 5th for a thoroughly enjoyable 4-course dinner with wines from Waugh Cellars. It’s a great way to learn more about wines, while getting to spend a nice evening with good food and drink. And Valentine’s Day was made for Crush! If you want a romantic setting to swoon your significant other, look no further. As far as Amarillo goes, Crush is the superhero of bars. If you haven’t been, you’re truly missing out. If you have been, go again. Try one of their import beers; you won’t find them anywhere else in town. It would be wrong to deprive yourself of some of these unique, everchanging, wildly delightful beers.

HE’S JUST NOT THAT IN TO YOU Opens: Friday, February 6, 2009 | Runtime:2 hr. 9 min. Rated: PG-13 Sexual content and brief strong language Cast: Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly Genres: Romantic Comedy, Comedy, Ensemble Film A group of interconnected, Baltimore-based twenty- and thirtysomethings navigate their various relationships from the shallow end of the dating pool through the deep, murky waters of married life, trying to read the signs of the opposite sex—and hoping to be the exceptions to the “no-exceptions” rule. Gigi just wants a man who says he’ll call—and does—while Alex advises her to stop sitting by the phone. Beth wonders if she should call it off after years of committed singlehood with her boyfriend, Neil, but he doesn’t think there’s a single thing wrong with their unmarried life. Janine’s not sure if she can trust her husband, Ben, who can’t quite trust himself around Anna. Anna can’t decide between the sexy married guy, or her straightforward, no-sparks standby, Conor, who can’t get over the fact that he can’t have her. And Mary, who’s found an entire network of loving, supportive men, just needs to find one who’s straight.
So, Crush delivers a fantastic bar experience unlike anywhere else, and just like a good wine, Crush only gets better with time….
