Amarillo may not be the biggest town, and it may not have the largest pool of musicians, but there are grand exceptions. So, when an individual comes across a fantastic band, it’s a diamond in the rough. It’s growing immensely important to support local art and local musicians, and as far as good music goes, The Clanks is a unique band that brings a great vibe to the Amarillo music scene. They incorporate aspects of Blues, of artful Indie music, and easygoing melodies. Brandon Todd, the vocalist, guitarist, lyricist, and pretty much the mastermind of The Clanks, takes good care to deliver a diverse musical experience. He has been in the Amarillo music scene for a lengthy amount of time, and he has dabbled in as many different bands as musical instruments. He plays the harmonica, guitar, organ, bass, mandolin, and even rocks out on the kazoo, though he brings his skills in vocals, guitar, and harmonica to The Clanks. The Clanks is his newest project, and alongside drummer Seth Havens and bassist Steven Ronk, they offer Amarillo a different taste of live music with their shows. With influences for their music coming from bands like Pink Floyd, Mars Volta, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, Sunny Day Real Estate, Modest Mouse, and Elliot Smith, they bring a lot to the musical table. They play downtown often, doing sets in the bars on Polk Street, like Bodega’s, Butler’s, and Burberry’s, but they also appreciate the venues with great crowd involvement like The Golden Light Cantina and EBGB’s. “When the crowd gets involved, it makes our music even better,” explains Brandon Todd “We feed off of it.” It’s not hard for the crowd to get involved with their laidback, yet refined musical talent. Their sets are about fifty-fifty on original songs and covers. With their originals, they offer great diversity with songs that are emo-based, and songs that are 12-bar blues based as well. There’s something for everyone in their sets. And when it comes to covers, they stick to the classics, and they do a really good job of it, too. They cover the greats like Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendrix, and The Rolling Stones, and in doing so, they pay homage to the classic rock scene by doing so. They also have been known to collaborate with young musicians to add a different sound every now and then. With these three musician’s massive talent, their band puts on an entertaining, lively, and captivating show. Their eclectic tastes provide a fiercely interesting musical experience for the audience. They play good music throughout the set, whether it is a covered classic or a new song of theirs.

Go Green! By Amy Baucom March 17 is Saint Patrick’s Day, the day when the Irish honor their Patron Saint, who is rumored to have driven all the snakes out of Ireland. This may or may not have happened, but the Irish will tell you that there’s not a snake to be found in all of Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day actually honors the day he died, and not his birthday, as it’s widely assumed. Although not an American holiday, Saint Patrick’s day is celebrated here in the US, and what better way to celebrate in Amarillo than at Mulligan’s Sports Pub and Bar? Located at 2511 Paramount Blvd, the pub is privately and locally owned by Robert and Rachel Stiles. With all the perks of a larger bar in a bigger city, Mulligan’s has a friendly staff that is more like a close-knit family that tries to ensure their patrons have fun. The pub promotes responsible service of alcohol, and provides patrons with free cab service everyday should the need arise.

M A R C H 2 0 0 9 • 3A Although, they do not serve frozen drinks, you’re sure to find something you like. How about Two Dollar Tuesday, where all pints and bottles are $2.00. Or, maybe Rockstar Thursday is more your style, with Jagerbombs, Tuacabombs, Cherrybombs, and a few others, all at $3.50 apiece. If sports or billiards are your favorite pastimes, then Mulligan’s has you covered there too. With 17 regular TV’s and 2 projection screens, you’re not likely to miss a game. Enjoy watching your favorite college basketball team during March Madness, or come in March 7th for UFC Fight Night. But be sure and come early to get a seat, because the pub is crowded on fight nights. There’s also 3 pool tables, a shuffleboard table, and darts for customers to try their hands at. The shuffleboard is free, while the darts cost you a small deposit of $5.00 per hour, and the pool table takes quarters. Private parties, bachelor parties, and other private events are also welcomed, and Mulligan’s rents out the shuffleboard room for those who want it. The rental price varies on time reserved, and guests get to have their own personal servers for the duration of the party.

With a full-service bar and menu items such as burgers, buffalo wings, and chips and dips, one need not be worried about leaving hungry or thirsty. The biggest sellers on the menu are the burgers and appetizer samplers, which offer a choice of four different appetizers for you to enjoy.

For their regular customers, who want to have their own piece of Mulligan’s, beer mugs are offered for $35.00 per year. The mug is marked with the purchaser’s name, and a number, and is kept at the pub all year. Any time the mug’s owner comes in for a beer, it’s served in his or her own personal mug. Each year brings a new mug, and Mulligan’s will send you an email reminder when it’s time to re-new your mug.

They offer drink specials every night, and Happy Hour is from 4pm-7pm with $2.00 well drinks. During the month of March, Mulligan’s offers $1.50 domestic drafts including Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors, and Michelob Ultra Light.

Mulligan’s is open every day from 4:00pm-2:00am, and you must be 21 or older with proper ID to enter. Check out their webpage at www.myspace.com/mulliganssportspub

With Saint Patrick’s Day fast approaching, Mulligan’s offers drink specials including $4.00 Irish Car Bombs, $2.00 Guinness or Killian’s, and $1.50 green beer. Live music is on tap for the wearin’ o’ the green, and local band Insufficient Funds will be playing there from 8pm-12am.

A Story of...Avenue 10 By Eva Harder About ten years ago, Sirc Michaels, age 34 from the NYC area, was driving through Amarillo and saw something he wanted to change; he saw a youth demographic that was bored and a youth that was devoid of an artistic venue. Since then, Michael has been visiting the Panhandle pretty regularly, with the express purpose to bring shows to Amarillo that the people wouldn’t ordinarily see; he wanted to create a place where all sorts of artists, actors and musicians could congregate at will, a place that wasn’t a bar, but a venue. So in May of 2008, Michaels co-founded “Avenue Ten,” a venue that promises to do just that. Though Michaels has a diverse background in directing, producing, and playwriting, his main function at”“Avenue Ten” involves handling public relations. He defines Avenue Ten as a place that pushes to develop the performing arts in Amarillo by offering novice artists the opportunity to cultivate their talent. The group mostly works with actors and professionals, but seeks to be involved with musicians and concerts as well. Michaels says they are “driven to help Amarillo in a real way;” they’re not in it for the money and are even looking to host free workshops in the future. They hold a special interest in novices, in teaching artists who are inexperienced but willing to learn. More of the venue’s aspirations include future tours, being as professional as they can be, and making sure their shows and performances reach perfection.’“What matters is that the story on stage is perfect… We’re not the only show in town, but I think we’re the best.” Michaels asserts that they are not a community theatre. It’s a place for artists who are serious about what they do. Avenue Ten believes that there are a lot of performing artists in this area

who simply need to be discovered, but that there’s no actual thrust from the city to make that happen. Though the group has a lot of ambition for their own venue, their main goal is that the people of Amarillo get involved in the arts and check them out, be it ALT, AC, or the ballet. “It’s all good.” And while the art community is a big one, Avenue Ten are the foul-mouthed kids in the corner. While they may believe in a lot of things, censorship is definitely not one of them. Their website proclaims that they’re the “…folks your mama warned you about.” Avenue Ten was also recently involved in some controversy with the Christian group “Repent Amarillo” which caused them to lose their space on 10th Avenue, not to mention a cute pun — Avenue Ten is actually a play on words; a venue on Tenth. It began when Avenue Ten decided to put on the play “Bent,” a tale of two homosexual men in the concentration camp of Dachau in the 1930’s. Soon after, “Repent Amarillo” listed Avenue Ten on their website as a “gay theatre;” Avenue Ten contacted “Repent Amarillo” in hopes of scheduling a meeting to discuss this apparent misunderstanding, but “Repent Amarillo” refused. “Repent Amarillo” managed to shut down their space on 10th Avenue on the grounds that the venue was a retail space, not performance. “Avenue Ten’s” current, temporary location is the Masonic Lodge on 6th Avenue. Michaels says they are hoping to permanently acquire the Wrecks Theatre and to restore it into a true theatre and lounge for all people and all groups, college-age and senior citizens, locals and tourists, because, after all, “The arts know no age.” Some of Avenue Ten’s upcoming shows include’“Fat Pig” by Neil Labut and “The Laramie Project” by Moises Kaufman. For information about Avenue Ten and upcoming Shows, visit their website at http://www.myspace.com/ avenue10.

Weight Loss Motivation Tips Being on a weight loss regimen is no easy task, but it’s definitely doable! The trick is not to expect weight loss results overnight, and to stay motivated. The longer you stay motivated, the more weight loss success you will achieve. Motivation comes from all sources. It could be a picture, a friend, or other weight loss success stories. Follow these weight loss motivation tips to keep you motivated and closer to your goal. Find out what works for you and focus on that. Motivational Weight Loss Tips • Don’t look for immediate results. Your initial weight loss will be water weight, so plan for the long haul. • This is a new way of life, so don’t make drastic changes. • Set small goals of 5 lb increments. • If you splurge on food, forgive yourself and move on. It happens to everybody. • Find a weight loss buddy who is “on call” and be there for them as well. • Keep your thoughts positive. Don’t focus on your mishaps. • Keep a journal and write down everything you eat and calories burned during exercise. • If you reach a weight loss plateau, reduce calories and increase exercise. • If you’re ready to eat something you know you shouldn’t, ask yourself if you want to “wear” it the next day. • Take a “before” picture and tape it on the fridge door. • Take it one day at a time and set realistic goals. • Don’t cut out all of your favorite foods, you’ll feel deprived. Instead, reduce the portions.

• Wear comfortable shoes and clothing when exercising. It will be easier for you and you’ll be less likely to incur injuries. • Make your exercise as enjoyable as possible. If that means a TV and fan in front of your treadmill, don’t hesitate. • Remember not only will you look better, you’ll be healthier. • Make losing weight a control issue. Vow to regain control of your weight, and your life. • Reward yourself with non-food items when you reach goals. • Remember, you are the only one responsible for your weight and your health. • When you start reaching your small goals, attend social events and enjoy the compliments of others who notice. Now that’s weight loss motivation for the next 5 lbs. • Wear your “fat” clothes around the house. This keeps you aware of how big you really were and gives you satisfaction. • Unfortunately, there’s people who will resent or envy your success. Enjoy! • Remember, you’re successful with every pound you lose. • The best motivation is when you reach your goals!

Buffalo Wild Wings By Amy Baucom It’s the big, yellow and black building just south of the Coulter Street Super Wal-Mart in Amarillo. It’s also the home of some of the hottest wings in the city. Buffalo Wild Wings, locally owned by Kendall Howard out of Lubbock, has been in Amarillo since 2007. Area General Manager Jeff Sherrill says that the biggest sellers are the wings, with Honey Barbeque being the popular choice. The wings are spun to coat the wings in sauce, and come in flavors from Mild to Blazing. The Buffalo Blazing Challenge is a chance for the very brave to try their

taste buds’ mettle against the clock. 12 Blazing Buffalo Wings are brought out, and when the customer’s ready, the stopwatch clicks. The challenge is to eat 12 Blazing Wings in six minutes. Many have tried, many have failed. But, the unofficial record is 1:21. The winner’s picture is put on the wall for others to see, and as unofficial bragging rights. Wings come in batches of 6, 12, 18, 24 or 50 for traditional, or 8, 12, 24 and 50 for boneless. But during the week, there are some wing specials. Tuesday nights, traditionalstyle wings are only $.40 each, and on Thursdays, boneless wings are $.60 each. Wednesdays is boneless tenders for $1.00. In addition to the wings, burgers, wraps and salads, as well as an array of appetizers, can be found on the menu, with the appetizer sampler the most popular. Southwest Dippers, mozzarella sticks, buffalo chips (thin-cut fries) are just a few of the appetizers served at Buffalo Wild Wings. Happy hour is Monday -Friday, 4 to 7pm, with a choice of over twenty beers on tap and a full service bar. Each month is a different beer of the month, where you can buy a 23 ounce draft for $3.25. They also have daily specials, and food and drink are served until 1:30 am. Green Beer is served on Saint Patrick’s Day, as well. During big games, such as the Superbowl, or college playoff games, Buffalo Wild Wings usually has a full house, and overflow parking is available

Where The Buffalo Roam By Amy Baucom There’s a new eatery in Canyon. Located next to the Holiday Inn Express, at 2611 4th Avenue, is Buffaloes Southwest Cafe. Recognizable by it’s pink front, the cafe opened October 20th, 2008 with the tag line, “World Famous Wings”. Although the franchise is locally owned, there are 57 Buffaloes Cafe’s in the US, as well as locations in Saudi Arabia, Puerto Rico, and Iraq. The Canyon cafe is locally owned by Drew Alexander, and overseen by Director of Operations Kevin Simms. Buffaloes Southwest Cafe offers an array of food, appetizers, and desserts, and has a full service bar. They are the first full service bar in Canyon, with a full alcohol permit that allows them to serve not only beer and wine, but other spirits, too. But Simms says the cafe takes a responsibility with alcohol, and that they are a restaurant, not a bar. The menu consists of burgers, wraps, salads and ribs, with ribs and Buffalo wings being the biggest sellers. Their biggest seller on the appetizer menu is the Trailblazer Sampler and Southwest Egg rolls. All of their sauces are made from scratch in the kitchen, including their Vidalia Onion sauce, and barbeque sauce. Soups, Queso, and tortilla chips are also made fresh, as nothing comes out of a can at Buffaloes Cafe. Although they serve Buffalo wings, they do not serve boneless wings, but do have a boneless chicken tenders platter. Their corn on the cob is deep fried, and the Buffalo wings are fried using peanut oil in three different stages. Once to blanch, then to cook, and lastly, to crisp them. The wings come in flavors ranging from Lemon Pepper, Honey Barbeque and Coconut Jerk. There is no fried fish on the menu, but they do offer salmon. Simms, a West Texas A & M University Alum, is a huge supporter of the Herdsmen Organization, the caretakers of the WTAMU mascot, Thunder X. The back room, which can be used for meetings or private parties, is aptly named the Herdsmen Room. The Herdsmen Room boasts a big screen TV, can be used for Power Point presentations, and seats between 40-45 people. The Herdsmen organization, which is advised by Shawn Burns of the University Police Department, holds a meeting in the Herdsmen Room once a month. Therefore, the Herdsmen and their wives or girlfriends are given a 10% discount on all their meals. One day a month, 10% of all meal sales are given to the Herdsmen to help defray expenses the organization might incur. You can buy a stuffed buffalo at the hostess stand, and the cost of them also are donated to the Herdsmen. Simms hopes to have Thunder X and the Herdsmen at the cafe once a month, but dates are still pending on that. Check out the 900-pound statue of a buffalo, famous for her role in the epic Dances With Wolves. Actual arrow marks can be seen in the hide, and she over looks the main dining room. Buffaloes Southwest Cafe is going to being to offer catering, and provides room service for the neighboring Holiday Inn Express. Party platters are available, including chicken tender platters, that can be delivered. Or, opt for the curbside-to-go service, where the staff will bring your order to your car. The staff at Buffaloes is friendly, dedicated and fun, and most have been with the cafe since its opening. Smoking is allowed in the bar area, with a separate air conditioning system to help keep the smoke from drifting into the main dining area. They stay open late for the musical drama, “Texas”, and on Wednesdays, kids eat free with the purchase of an adult meal. Next time you’re in Canyon, go to where the buffalo really do roam, and try Buffaloes Southwest Cafe.
