During the week they clean their rooms, take out the garbage and complete homework assignments. On the weekends, however, they rock stages from Amarillo to Dallas. “I couldn’t imagine what we’d be doing if we were not in a band,” said bassist Jon Klause of Klause, an Amarillo heavy metal band. The Klause brothers—Stevie, 13, Josh, 14, and Jon, 15—had been playing together for a while when their dad opted to join in. “He’s pretty much the new guy,” Jon Klause said. Steve Klause came home from work about two years ago and discovered his boys playing an old Pantera song he hadn’t heard in years. “It was my favorite band,” he said. “When I was about 18, me and my buddies just wore that cassette out. There were cassettes back then.” At that point, Steve Klause wanted to throw his vocals in the mix. “I decided I was going to try and sing for them, and I bought a PA and we decided we were going to do our first song together as a band,” he said. That song was Pantera’s “Cowboys From Hell.” “It was awful,” Steve Klause said with all three of his sons in agreement. But the group did not give up. After kicking around a few band names, the four-piece decided to stick with Klause. In July 2008, a friend invited the group to play at a Wal-Mart employee party. More than 50 shows later, they have performed at local bars and venues and branched out to other cities such as Lubbock, Pampa and Dallas. “My favorite memory was going to Pampa because it was huge,” said guitarist Stevie Klause. “I love to see people mosh. It gives me a really warm heart.” Klause performs most often at the War Legion Underground in Amarillo, located at 519 S.E. 10th Ave. The band calls the venue their second home. Eric Turley, War Legion owner, refers to Klause as “the biggest little band in Amarillo.” Turley said he did not know what to think of the band until the first time he heard them play. “They’re the real deal,” Turley said. “I got to host one of their first club shows in Amarillo, so that kind of always meant something to me. And I see them as a serious talent other than just a couple of kids with a gimmick. They are truly talented, and they’re my little guys, man. I think they could do something with the whole thing.” Since their formation, Steve Klause said the band set their focus on playing in Dallas because one of their favorite metal magazines, Harder Beat, was based out of the city. “We’d been reading that for years, so when we started the band we put a target on Dallas,” Steve Klause said. “Their last issue was like the next month.” Still, Klause persevered and their dream came true in August when they were invited to play at one of the pre-parties for the fifth annual Ride For Dime event. Ride For Dime is a charitable organization that memorializes “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, the former guitarist for heavy metal bands Pantera and Damage Plan. Klause helped raise $3,500, which was donated to a few of Abbott’s favorite charities. “It was the craziest party you could ever imagine,” Steve Klause said. “We were right up front. Dimebag’s wife gave my kids a hug, and she offered us the main stage next year.” Klause thinks of Abbott as a heavy metal hero and ends every show with a 15-minute-long Pantera medley. “That’s my favorite part of the night, every night,” said drummer Josh Klause, who banged on a trash can in his back yard for more than a year before his dad bought him a drum set. Jon Klause said he vividly remembers the moment he found out Abbott had been shot in 2004 at an Ohio nightclub during a performance. “It was the 9-11 of heavy metal, easily,” Jon Klause said. “We finish every show with Pantera, and I hope we always will.” Steve Klause said he and his sons relate to Abbott because he was a down-to-earth person. “When he met somebody back stage, he made them feel like they were his best friend,” Steve Klause said. “We definitely don’t take ourselves seriously. It’s kind of hard to be first class when you’re white trash, and that’s another thing we take from him.” Klause also recycles the phrase “Getcha’ Pull,” a famous Abbott slogan. To them, the words can mean “anything and everything,” from advancing musically to letting it all hang out. Klause is “getting their pull” by playing all the shows they can. “We turn hand shakes into relationships, and that’s how you get gigs,” Steve Klause said. “Now we get to go to Dallas and hang out with (Abbott’s) friends and buddies.” Turley said he has watched Klause’s audience grow since they started doing shows last year. “Every body’s immediately taken by them,” Turley said. “They definitely have a fan base. A lot of people like them. I appreciate the talent they have.” Along with praise, however, the group’s success has generated criticism. “Every once in a while we’ll get the random nimrod on the Web site who tells us I shouldn’t be exposing our kids to this,” Steve Klause said. “What can you do? These are my kids. A lot of parents would cringe about taking their kids to a bar, but the way I see it I guess the juice is worth the squeeze.” Steve Klause said his sons take on bar environments with maturity. “I’ve been real proud about how they’ve handled it,” he said. “They’ve never tried to sneak a drink, and they’re teenagers.” Steve Klause said he and his wife make parenting their top priority. “I’m a parent first and singer second,” Steve continued on pg. 7A...

If you live in the Texas Panhandle or surrounding areas you have probably heard of the Buster Bledsoe Band. They have been playing together for about 3 years now. The band consist of 4 members, Buster Bledsoe is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Geoff McCaslin is their lead guitarist, Doug Ecker is on the drums and Rowdy Rider is lead rhythm and harmony vocalist. Together this band brings a whole new experience to the Panhandle.

All of The Good None of The Bad!

“This dream has been a long time in the making!” says Buster. He has been singing since he was 16. He started at Hoots Pub in Amarillo on amateur night singing ‘You look So Good in Love’ and ‘The Cowboy Rides Away’ with singer/songwriter James Davis playing the guitar. From there he started performing at the Big Texan Steak Ranch Opry. He was just a solo act until his long time high school friend Justin Mays came back to Amarillo after being gone with the Navy for 5 years. Justin had been stationed out of Virgina Beach, Virgina and had a successful solo career writing songs and playing Acoustic Rock. Upon his return to the Texas Panhandle, he began teaching Buster how to play the guitar. Justin has now been deployed to Iraq and is missed greatly! As for their drummer Doug Ecker, Buster has known Doug since high school. They hung out sporatically and became great friends. Doug joined the Army National Guard, and has returned to A-Town! Doug has played with a couple of garage bands and is doing awesome! Geoffery McCaslin is from Canyon, among other places and has a blues and rock background. He has played in

a couple of bands and has also done studio work. He has added a whole new dimension to the band! Then there is Rowdy Rider who is their lead rhythm - harmony vocalist and then Shawn White is the sound specialist. These guys are the newest addition to the band. The Buster Bledsoe Band plays a show almost every weekend. Traveling all over, to places such as Liberal Kansas, San Angelo, Midland, Borger, Portales NM, and Guymon OK. You can also see them around Amarillo at several venues such as Lowery’s Saloon and Dance Hall, Ho ots Pub, Golden Light Cantina, Rounders, and The Western Horseman. Recently they played at the XIT Rodeo and they have been asked to come back and play for them next year. They also perform at private shows and charity functions. Make a Wish Chili cook-off HOG group and Eveline Rivers toy run just to name a few. They are usually approached and asked to play at these kinds of events.

continued from pg. 2A... Klause said. “We tell them that if you want to do this, it’s not a given. It’s a privilege to be up here doing this. All we ask for is good grades and decent behavior.” Steve Klause describes his wife as the “grounding rod” to the band. “She’s our biggest fan,” he said. “She’s supportive, but at the same time if we mess up she will put wrath on our world,” Jon Klause said. Another criticism the band faces is being labeled a “novelty act” by some spectators. “They say once we grow up we’re nothing,” Stevie Klause said. “Novelty act bothers me more than them criticizing my parenting because they don’t know me,” Steve Klause said. “They’re criticizing not only our music but how serious we are about it, because we take it very serious and this isn’t going to stop when they’re grown up.” The Klause brothers have a natural connection when they play together, Steve Klause said. “It’s a trip because all three of them just look at each other,” he said. “Even a look ... Josh is a little slow on the tempo and Jon will give him a look. It’s that brother thing. It’s cool.”

They don’t really have a manager,“I am the one that does all of that stuff” says Buster. Aside from the what they do with the band you can also find these guys around town living their lives like everyone else. Buster is in food sales for Sysco foods of West TX. Geoff is a math teacher. Doug works for Garys Heating and Air. Rowdy is at Norris Audio/Video and Shawn works at the VA. All of the members of the band agree that their main goal as a whole would be to make enough money with their music to be able to quit their jobs and focus on their dreams. Coors of Amarillo is their main sponsor and they are very thankful for their support. “We would like to thank our families and friends f or their support and thanks to everyone who has came out to support our music! We couldn’t do it without you!” The Buster Bledsoe Band. You can go online and check out some of their music that they have posted on their myspace at www.myspace.com/busterbledsoeband.

Steve Klause enjoys the musical journey he shares with his sons. “Pride’s not a big enough word,” he said. “I’m up there living my dream with them, so it’s like a dream within a dream. So I’m not only having my cake but eating it, too.” Stevie, Jon and Josh said they are proud of their dad as well. “He’s probably the best singer for us,” Josh Klause said. “Without him we wouldn’t be going to Dallas. Even if he ends up not being the singer, he’ll be involved. I can’t see him not being in the band.” Klause’s current focus is adding more songs to their 7 original compositions. They also hope to record a demo or self-produced CD in the near future. Another goal is taking their act on the road. “We want to tour, man, we want to tour,” Steve Klause said. “We want the same thing that any band wants. We’re no different. We want it, too.” Other musical influences of Klause are Slipknot, Stone Sour and Damage Plan. Stay up to date with show dates and the group’s blog by visiting MySpace.com/klauseband72. Steve Klause said he and and his sons hope to work their way to the top. “We’re going to keep kicking around town doing what we’re doing because we have fun and that’s the bottom line,” he said. “The worst case scenario is that we have fun, and that’s pretty good.”

6B • DECEMBER 2009 A Red Door Christmas! By Amy Baucom Everywhere you look around Amarillo, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Especially at Red Door Antiques. Located at 2612 Wolflin Avenue, the store’s bright red door is eye catching, and inside that door lies a whole wonderland of Christmas. Almost as if you are stepping into Santa’s workshop. Owner Sam Pruitt has been in business since 1993, and the store was originally located on Sixth Street. Since moving to their present location, many of their long-time customers have remained loyal to the store, and many more new customers make frequent return visits. The Red Door carries antique furniture, gifts, decorations, Christmas ornaments, figurines, wreaths garlands and centerpieces, as well as needle point pillows and other items such as Estate jewelry from private collections. This time of the year, it’s all Christmas, all the time, and is their busiest time of the year as well.

www.amarilloscene.com The furniture is all antique, dating back to the mid-1700s and 1800s, and as part of the customer service, Sam will do repairs on all furniture they sell. Their largest piece of furniture was a 9’ by 7’ cabinet, and they also carry Howard’s Furniture products such as furniture wax and oils to keep those antiques in good condition. The most popular items are the Christmas arrangements, made in the traditional colours of red, green and gold, and captures the feel of old-fashioned Christmas cards. Unique items such as riding boots, violin cases, violins, trombones and an old French horn have been used in the arrangements, and add a personal touch to each piece. Arrangements are all done by hand, and can be made for homes or businesses. In one room, a near-life-sized giraffe looks out from a corner, his head almost touching the ceiling above him. Next to the giraffe, is a print of two lions, and at his feet, lepoard print pillows, giving a safari atmosphere to the Christmas-decorations around them. In yet another room, you will find an antique bed, cradle and red-upholstered sofa. The sofa is decorated with needle-point pillows in different sizes, with designs ranging from dogs to quotes stitched upon them. Over the bed is a beautiful print of ballerinas practicing in a studio, and an antique lamp sits beside the sofa. Eight employees make up the staff, including Camille Cargil, who works during the holidays, and Sidney Koenig, and they are always ready with a warm welcome and friendly smile when greeting customers.

on the counter, and the shelves behind it. There are also plenty of pastries and meringue creations in the bakery case.

BEEF BURGER BARREL

Some of the breads Frank’s offers are French bread, baguettes, Rosemary bread, Kalamata Olive, made with the best olives in the world, and tomato bread. (The pastries include eclairs, creme brulee, and also Paris Brest, which is akin to a creme puff, and named after a city on the North end of Britain, just West of France. Raspberry Mousse, made with raspberries, creme, and a little bit of cake on the bottom, is also offered, as are fruit pastries with seasonal fruits such as kiwi, pineapple, and peach.

Christmas ornaments range from traditional to themes, to whimsical, and one tree is decorated to look like a huge Santa Claus, with western boots at the bottom, and a topper made to look like St. Nick’s head and upper torso. Santa is twirling a lasso, and ornaments in the shape of horse shoes and stars hang from the branches. Near the front entrance, an elf dressed in a red jumper sits happily on an old-fashioned rocking horse, and Christmas music plays softly in the background. All the pictures, decorations, arrangements, jewelry and wreaths are for sale, and Sam or one of the employees will make sure you enjoy your shopping experience at The Red Door. Their hours are Monday through Friday, 10 am to 5:30 pm. The phone number is 806.352.4800. (Be sure and stop in this Christmas season and feel free to browse through the many delightful things in the shop. You’re sure to find something that you can’t leave without.

Frank’s Bakery

Frank’s also offers breakfast and on the menu, you will find croissant with ham and cheese, spinach, or sausage and cheese available. Soft drinks, coffee, cappuccino, and hot chocolate are the drink choices, and you can either dine in, or take your order with you to enjoy at home or at the office. For lunch, the bakery, with a seating capacity of approximately 30, offers Quiche Lorraine, Spinach Quiche, ham and cheese Bechamel. They serve between 40-60 lunches a day, and their cozy atmosphere makes for a pleasant dining experience. Their lunch hours are 11:00 am to 1:30 pm. A large mural takes up one wall, and there are several vintage prints and pretty pictures hung around the dining area. Customers can also sit at the little bar and watch the street outside while they enjoy their meal. No smoking is allowed in the bakery. There are no wheat or rye breads, all breads are white, and made fresh. Aligator bread, made in the shape of the animal, and turtle bread is also available, although there are no nut breads. Frank’s does not do catering or parties, but will make special orders on request. Frank says he is “happy to be small” and not a large bakery, like some of the others. He’s got lots of repeat customers, and most of the advertising is through word-of-mouth, or people who drive by. They’ve received several awards from Accent West magazine, and appreciate customer comments. They decorate for Christmas with lights and a Christmas tree, and make Christmas logs in flavors such as butter creme, coffee, chocolate and Grand Marnier.

By Amy Baucom Ask people around you what some of their favorite smells are, and there’s a good chance someone will mention fresh-baked bread. (Frank’s Bakery, at 1923 S. Western Street in Amarillo is just the place to go to find many different kinds of fresh bread, pastries, desserts and more.

Frank’s accepts checks or cash only, “no plastic”, and their hours are 8:00 am-6:00 pm Tuesday through Friday, and Saturdays 8:30 am-6:00pm. Telephone number is 806-352-8089.

Owned by Francois Gauclain and managed by his daughter, Celine, Frank’s Bakery has been in business for ten years. Frank, born and raised in France, has been baking since he was fourteen years old, so he’s got 52 years of experience in the fine art of hand made, home-made goodness. Walk into the bakery, and you will see all sorts of delicious looking breads

Go in and see Frank or Celine, and try some of their unique food and breads. You will soon be back for more.
