d itor’s thoughts... A
s the Editor of The Scene, from it’s inception in 2005, it has always had a special place in my heart. We felt like Amarillo was missing a good dining and entertainment guide. Being a part of the American Classifieds corporation we had the resources and hit the ground running. The Scene started out as an 8 page newsprint tabloid and has turned into a 16+ page glossy magazine.
T
hrough the years, we’ve made changes and we have evolved and grown. We now have two sections of our magazine. One being our Arts, Leisure, Style and Beauty section. The other being our Nightlife, Bar, Band and Concert information. This format gives us the perfect combination of class with a little bit of edge to it. The Scene is unmatched in it’s ability to capture it’s audience and their need to plan ahead with an extensive monthly calendar of events and interesting local articles.
I
f you are a regular Scene reader you will notice some changes in this issue and we have many more planned for the year 2010...which happens to be our 5 year Anniversary! Previously The Scene was inserted into American Classifieds. In 2010, The Scene will be a stand alone magazine with distribution locations ALL over Amarillo and the surrounding Panhandle towns. We have a new strategic marketing plan in place for the new year.
W
e will be moving toward an interactive relationship with our readers with an advice column, polls, contests, reader’s opinions, more of what is going on in our town, and an improved, user-friendly website. We would like to add more reader appealing content and involve our readers in our publishing process. So, we would love to hear your opinions and suggestions. We would also love the community to sumbit their own articles, stories, photography, artwork, local events, etc. I am looking forward to 2010 and working with our readers to make The Scene the best magazine in Amarillo!

Fly-N-Flashy, centrally located at 410 West 10th, just North of Washington has brought an urban fashion wave to Amarillo. That’s right, Amarillo Texas has a boutique store that carries the famous Apple Bottom jeans, True Religion, Ed Hardy, Artful Dodger, Coogi, Roc Wear, Evisu, Jordans and much more! Marybell and her boyfriend Shelton Douglas have known each other for 12 years and have been a couple for 2 now. Before opening Fly-NFlashy, Marybell was a restaurant Manager for the Wing Stop, while going to school for a business degree. Shelton at the time was working for Marble Depot. One of Shelton’s brothers owns a Fly-N-Flashy in Midwest City, while another owns one in Lubbock and his mother has a location in Altus, Oklahoma. Marybell was tired of being in corporate management and the stress of working and going to school took such a toll on her that she went from a size 9 to a size 1. Although it sounds like a great way to lose weight, the strain outweighed the fulfillment and the couple decided to pursue their dream and open their own clothing store. Marybell and Shelton found a small run-down location on 10th street and approached the landlord, Rick Gonzalaz with R&G Properties, with their vision. Rick was shocked that the couple would want to take on such a huge remodeling
project, so he offered them the first month’s rent free in exchange for remodeling a basement that looked like it should be condemned. Shelton gathered friends and family who all pitched in and helped gut the property and turn it into the downstairs urban chic boutique it is today. According to Marybell, “Rick is a wonderful landlord, he has been so helpful and we are so grateful to him.”
Shelton took the very first plane ride of his life to New York to go to market and scope out the kind of clothing they wanted to carry in their store. “Shelton called me and asked what size I wore so he could make sure he didn’t buy my size, because he knew I would be end up wearing half of our inventory!” Marybell jokes. When setting up the store, Marybell asked Shelton to sign for this and that and he said no. He told her this was her dream and it was his gift to her to help make it happen. “He is a blessing and I don’t know what I would do without him.” Marybell says. It has been her dream to have her own clothing store and not just a clothing store, but a one that carried name brands that no other store carried at prices that anyone can afford. Shelton orders the men’s attire and Marybell orders the womens’. They are both always researching to find new, hot products to bring to Amarillo. And eventually they will be remodeling the other side of their store to turn into a hair salon! When you walk in the door, you will notice the stairs leading you down into a gold mine! The gold mine that no other clothing store in Amarillo has to offer!! APPLE BOTTOM JEANS and for only $50! Of course you would think they were a “knock off” of the infamous brand, but they are the real thing. You will also find a variety of Jordan shoes for men and women and ladies boots and purses. So take a trip to Fly-NFlashy at 410 S. 10th street and check out their selection.

The January second Saturday presentation will consider a specific situation of corporate environmental destruction and the resulting conflict with native Americans, and their allies, who finally said no to this, their own destruction. The Anishinaabe people of Grassy Narrows, western Ontario, began a blockade 7 years ago to stop forest clearcutting that was ruining their health and livelihoods. The blockade is continuing and our presenter, Jerry Stein, has worked with the situation three different years, just recently in October. He will show how the simple act of resisting environmental destruction can result in unintended positive consequences. He will also show how some of the same kinds of resistance in other areas of the world (East Timor, Palestine, Iraq, Sharbot Lake, and Chiapas)are affecting the land, the local culture and livelihoods. There will be time for discussion and questions. • Wildcat Bluff Nature Center - 2301 N Soncy Rd Amarillo Gorillas bs Texas Brahmas Coliseum • Amarillo Civic Center (806) 378-3096

Having a very independent nature, it is hard to control this person. “B” people are easily excitable. They can be emotional and high strung. Some may even have inflexible opinions showing their firm belief structure. Tending to think in either black or white, they don’t change their views easily “C’s” are lavish with themselves and those they love. Most are liberal with their money and tend to give it away with the knowledge they can always get more. These are good-humored people who are willing to help you if they can. Their genial, lighthearted spirit makes you feel good when you are around them. Carefree but cheerful, they may have you thinking twice with their dry sense of humor. “D’s” seem to assist others with good solid answers. Looked to for assistance and empathy, they seem to know what is right for each situation. They have a determination for life with a sense of purpose, which few others have. Needing a firm foundation, they work hard to build this in their life. They are intelligent and u nderstanding with very good judgment. “E,” being the second vowel, is a particularly strong letter. It represents the five senses. This makes the bearer of this letter more tactile. They enjoy others company and the fine art of communication but they also love being alone.
