www.amarilloscene.com Shenghi’s daughter, Narmin, is the manager, and she was born in Turkey before moving with her family to America; first New York, then Amarillo. Shenghi owned Bijan’s Persian Restaurant in Amarillo before opening Saffron. The restaurant is homey, with several nice art pieces on the walls, and both Narmin and Bijan are very friendly and welcoming. The menu is full of delicious, exotic-sounding dishes such as Gyros, made with beef and lamb, tomatoes and onion; and their House Specialities are Zereshk Polo, Sabzi Polo, and Bagali Polo, all accompanied with Saffron Rice. They offer a variety of appetizers, including Hummas, and Dole-Meh, a dish made of grape leaves stuffed with ground beef, vegetables and spices. The Dole-Meh takes several hours to make, and has a nice, earthy taste from the grape leaves, coupled with Saffron rice and tomatoes, and a sweet-spicy sauce that is strong on the tongue, bursting with flavour that leaves a pleasant taste on the palate. The homemade hummas is mild with pleasant texture and a mixture of cucumbers, pickles, tomatoes and black olives. The best sellers on the menu are the Kebobs, made with a choice of fillet, steak, chicken, lamb, shrimp or salmon. It’s interesting to note that the word “Shish” on Shish-Kabob translates to “skewer” from the Kurdish. The meat used in the food is Halal, meaning it is prepared according to Islamic customs. All plates are served with fresh, homemade Naan, a crispy flat bread that Bijan bakes in a special oven after he hand-rolls the dough. He will also make Naan on request for parties or individuals.

Everything is made from scratch by Bijan, including the yoghurt drink, Doog. Some items are bought, such as the grape leaves or Saffron rice, but the majority of the food is made on the premises. There is even a small grocery store in back of the restaurant, where customers can buy menu items to take home. Saffron also offers Hookas, a Turkish water pipe with tobacco flavors such as banana, apricot and mint for $5.99. One of the more popular flavours is Apple. The hookahs come in only one size, and usually last 45 minutes to an hour. Disposable tips are used, and the pipes themselves are ornate and unique. The smoking room is separate from the main restaurant, and customers can watch TV while they relax and enjoy a hookah, or their meal. The hookahs and tobaccos are also for sale.

Saffron offers catering for parties or special occasions at home or the office. A buffet lunch is available from 11:00 AM-2:30 PM Monday through Friday. They serve beer and wine, domestic and imported, as well as sodas and peach or iced tea. If you want a hot drink, they off er hot tea, cappuchino, hot chocolate or coffee. Saffron Restaurant is open Monday through Thursday 10:30 AM-8:00 PM or Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 AM-10:00 PM. Closed Sundays. By Cherisa Felder Would you like the opportunity to drop a couple of those extra inches before you hit the beach this summer? With It Works! you can do just that in as little as 45 minutes. It Works! is the largest growing multi level company in the WORLD. It Works! Ultimate Body Applicator is a site-specific body wrap designed to target abs, back, legs, arms and chin area. It is made of a nonwoven cloth that helps you loose inches, improve skin texture, moisturize and tighten and tone. Most people loose 1-3 inches in 45 minutes (Some people have lost as much as 12-14 inches in one application). My mom wore hers to bed and the next morning she had lost 5 inches. This is how the wrap works! 80% of the product is absorbed within the 1st 45 minutes you wear it. You can wear the wrap longer if you choose to. The Herbs form the wrap are absorbed through the pores of you skin and penetrate 4 layers to the fat layer, where we store fat toxins, which are then excreted. Drinking lots of water while you wear the wrap is extremely beneficial. Originally this Product was used as a massage lotion in Elite Spas in Europe and Mexico, Costing around $300 per treatment. Clients were noticing that inches were just falling off of them after their massages. Pam Sowder heard of this and knew that she had to share it with Everyone! She started using this product and lost 5 sizes. Her best friend, Mark Pentecost (also Multi-millionaire) is who she went to

with her new found discovery in aims of marketing this product to share with all of us. Luis Mijares sold rights to the formula to this product to Mark for 5 Million Dollars. Luis’s Passion for research and development in skin care and biotechnology began when he was a child. He believes in keeping his ingredients all natural. To this day he remains a close friend and a big part of the It Works! Team. It Works! has been marketed now for for 8 years. Still being a new and growing company, it was a huge achievement to be invited to the Emmy’s this past year. Every star received a gift basket with the Ultimate Body Applicator and some of their nutritional supplements. Several of the stars, including Leeza Gibbons, Paula Abdul and Mario Lopez experienced the wrap and purchased more to take home. It Works! is an extremely safe alternative to liposuction without surgery! The Applicators don’t work by making you sweat out water, they actually help to release toxins form your fat cells, not water! It is encouraged that you drink lots and lots of water to assist in flushing your body of the extra toxins released form your fat cells. Everyone of us have fat cells. We have the same amount of fat cells the day we are born to the day we die. They expand and shrink. When you diet or work out, you don’t lose fat cells, you lose the “Subcuntaneous Fat” inside the cell.

It is recommended that you use the Applicator once a week to achieve your weight loss goals, but it is safe to use every 4 days if you choose to. It s is not safe, however, to OVER Detoxify your body. It can actually be dangerous to use more than one Applicator in a 4 day time period. The Ultimate Body Applicator is not the only product that It Works! offers. They have nutritional supplements, defining gels, skin care, and a line of companion products to assist with weight loss. All Products that It Works! offer are made with natural ingredients. This standard of providing the best quality supplements on the market

has carried through all of their product formulations and remains the driving force behind their supplement line. My roommate and I had a local sales representative (Gale Jones) for the company come out to our house so that we could experiment with this new product. I personally lost 2" in the 1st 45 minutes and 2 days later I had dropped another 1-1/2". My roommate lost 1-1/4" the 1st application and 2 days later she had dropped another 2". So results for everyone differ on many levels. Gale informed me that some people bloat during the use of their first application but that it was ok because that meant that the product was working on those fat cells and that results would quickly be noticeable. Gale Jones is a local sales representative for the It Works! company and she is a walking testimony that the product WORKS. If you would like to try this out for yourself or if you would like to host a party contact Gale Jones at 806 367-8944 or 806 206-4536 or visit www.itworks.net/ wrapmakeover.com and GET YOUR SEXY BACK! Genuine Hospitality & More Than Jewelry At Goodin’s Jewelry By Amy Baucom Walk into Goodin’s Jewelry at 3701 Olsen Blvd in Amarillo, and the first thing you will notice is a warm, friendly greeting from owners Paul and Debbie Goodin. In the jewelry business for almost 35 years, Paul and Debbie formerly owned A&G jewelry repair on Wolflin before opening their current location almost six years ago. Paul did benchwork for several jewelry stores before they decided to open their own place, and because of that experience, Goodin’s can offer in-store jewelry repair. They can size your rings, clean them, solder, reset jewelry, refinish and also do watch repair.

with another. The jewel pops come in rings, necklaces, earrings, brooches and even su nglasses! The jewel pop and jewelry are sold seperately, with the prices for the “pops” ranging from $20.00-$39.00. The jewel pops come in fun, interesting designs such as a pink and silver ying/yang symbol, a seahorse, malachite, tiger’s eye and many, many more designs. Goodin’s also sells loose diamonds, all cuts and get any quality stone avaiable. Quality affects price, and they can order pink or yellow diamonds if requested. Their precious gems range from sapphires to aquamarine, and their semi-precious gems include peridot, citrine and topaz.

They sell all types of jewelry, including fine jewelry, platnium, white and yellow gold, sapphires, rubies, diamonds and Sterling Silver jewelry. They also have a large selection of Tungsten and Titanium jewelry, as well.

While the bridal sets are the biggest seller at Goodin’s, the most unusual request they’ve ever had was a customer coming in and wanting two loose diamonds to put in his teeth (grille).

Their bridal sets come in white, yellow, twotone and platnium, with guys preferring to buy just the engagement ring and come back later with their betrothed to pick out bands. The current trend is white gold, but 95% of customers pick diamonds for their wedding sets over any other jewel. Paul and Debbie can handle custom-designed wedding bands if the customer has a specific design in mind.

Other top sellers are their gifts, and include baby jewelry, kitchen gifts, picture frames, ID bracelets, wedding gifts, cufflinks, and rediffusers. Debbie Goodin says they “try to find the unique”, and the rediffusers are unique. The rediffusers come with an essential oil that is poured into a jar, and then the scent is diffused in the air, using either wooden reeds, or, if it’s a burning diffuser, a wick. There are several scents of essential oils, giving a wide variety of flavours to choose from.

Goodin’s also carries exclusive brands of jewelry, meaning no one else in Amarillo is liscensed to carry that brand. These brands include Lorenzo, which has sterling silver and 18-karat two tone jewelry. Fossic Jewelry, which consists of fashion jewelry with a base of sterling silver. The most fascinating line of jewelry exclusive to Goodin’s is the Kameleon brand. Called “Jewel Pop”, this unique jewelry is sterling silver with interchangeable jewel “pops” that can be popped out of the ring and replaced

SIDE WALK SALE Saturday July 11th • 8am-6pm 15%OFF Everything In The Store! 50% OFF or More, On Everything Outside!

Paul and Debbie personally know many of their customers, and have had a lot of customers follow them from their old location to their current one. “We enjoy getting to knnow our customers,” Debbie says, and that’s indeed true, as most of the customers that come in know the Goodin’s on a first name basis, and vice-versa. Friendly service and atmosphere is important to the Goodin’s, as well as making sure their customers know that they can trust the Goodin’s with their jewelry. Paul stresses that “service after the sale” or customer service, is their biggest goal, and you’ll get it at Goodin’s jewelry. Located west of Maddie’s Madhouse Cafe and across from The Photo Store, Goodin’s Jewelry is open Monday through Friday from 9-6, and Saturdays from 11-5. They can be reached at 806-351-2634. Their store is easy to get to, and the customer is always treated with hospitality and genuine appreciation.

Custom Gifts By Amy Baucom Every so often, you find a neat little store tucked out of the way, and yet in plain sight. Custom Gifts, in the Bell-Hillside shopping center, is one of those places. Virgie Cook, wife of the late WR “Cookie” Cook, owns the store, as well as the entire shopping center. Friendly, spry and savvy, the 82 year old cook has a good outlook on life, and bases her success on the philosophy of

www.amarilloscene.com hard work and doing good for others. And a hard worker she is! Mrs. Cook started out by owning Fashion Corner of Amarillo, building her first store in 1969. She eventually branched out to a total of seven Fashion Corner stores. Her husband, Cookie, worked as Supervisor for the former Wirtz Construction group. He helped build several of the schools in Amarillo, the municipal building, and worked on the construction of Amarillo College. When the shopping center was f inished in 1997, the Cooks moved to their current location to watch over their property.

carries imported pottery, and has a small selection of laser cut crystal. But, as the laser cut crystal supplier is no longer in business, the selection in the store is the last of it. Virgie prides herself on her hard work, and says that if you’ve worked hard as long as she has, then you have no reason to be embarrassed by your success.

Assisted by her sister-in-law, Linda Cook, Mrs. Cook sells such things as authentic indian jewelry, trinket boxes, wall crosses, and some clothing. “We sell what we like”, Virgie says with a friendly smile.

Walk into Custom Gifts, meet Virgie and Linda, and take a look around. You’re certain to find something to turn your head, and take home with you. Custom Gifts, located at 5901 S. Bell, C-9, is open from 10am-5pm Monday through Saturday. Their phone number is 806.354.2789. Go on in and say hello to Linda and Virgie. They’ll be glad you came in.

Take a look around, and you will surely find something to suit your tastes. There are the crocheted kitchen towels on the wall, crocheted by Linda, and an adorable collection of frog figurines on the back counter. A collection of lady bug figurines sit contentedly on another table, and a curio cabinet near the front counter holds even more treasures. Custom Gifts carries several lines of candles, such as Sterling and Janik. They also have a selection of Heart of the Prairie candles out of Clinton, Oklahoma that are big sellers. The primary lines at Custom gifts are candles, Avon and indian jewelry. Licensed to sell Avon from the store, Custom gifts has a few of the company’s products for sale, or you can go in and order from Virgie herself. The decor is very southwest, and many of Custom Gifts customers are from foot-traffic, walk-ins. They offer small gifts for people that would rather not shop at the bigger retailers.
