By Cherisa Felder Well, I got the unique privilege of meeting with the group Future Boots. These guys have to be at the top of my list of crazy fun. A great deal of laughs were shared and it was hard to focus on their musical career when they are a group of witty characters I have never encountered. The band consist of three members.... Korte Jones, main vocalist and guitarist; Tyson Hooligan, drummer and backup vocalist and Dave Dishord, the bassist. Together for a little over a year they say “This is the most fun we have ever had playing in a band. Things immediately clicked and fell into place.” Pro-dominantly they have their own style and perform alot of their own music which is beyond original. Their style consists of a blend of Punk/ Reggae/90’s/New Wave. “It’s a fun, eppervescent style” That’s right Tyson is the one that threw that big word at me. He wanted me to be sure and point out that he came up with that one all on his own. It took me a minute to find the correct spelling and for those of you like me who don’t know what it means...”to show liveliness or exhilaration”. (So thank’s Tyson for the extra work load!) Covers are also something these guys do... Talking Heads, Romones, The Cure, NERD, Old Crow, Bob Marley, Medicine Show and Final Femme. (Just to name a few). Kind of gives us an insight into the range of music they get their own style from. They all come from a very different musical background. Korte is into Show Tunes (???), Tyson grew up on old school Punk Rock and Dave is the technical musician of this trio. “I base all technical aspects of what I play on Jazz”. He says. Jazz? Refreshingly surprising I must say. Outside of what they do together, their private lives are also vary. Tyson was originally in a Reggae band and he is currently in a church band. He is engaged to be married to a woman he claims to be “Hotter than donut grease”. “She is everything that I have ever looked for in a girl.” He had a twinkle in his eye when he spoke of her. Korte repairs and sells guitars and also gives guitar lessons. He is also engaged to be married. He says “She is the girl of my dreams.”

www.amarilloscene.com Don’t get discouraged girls, Jazz man Dave is still on the market. Wink wink, nudge nudge nudge. He hand builds all of his own basses and gives bass lessons. For a living he does Software Quality assurance. “He may also be a black market Strawberry Dealer, but non of us can prove it” Korte claims. Burberry’s is their main stage in Amarillo but they have preformed at many other local venues such as Golden Light, Rounders and EBGB’s are some of their newer spots. They have done several charity events also such as a Muscular Dystrophy event, Girl Scouts, Outstanding Amarillo and Pride Fest. Future Boots has been super lucky to play with a variety of local talent such as DONK, (they made it clear that they really like these guys), Datakid, Kevimean, The Dynamite Laser Beam, Skitz o’ Fuel and almost opened for Boston (the band). Rick Rueda has recently stepped in as the band’s manager. “It’s nice to not have to worry about the business part of things” Korte says. They don’t currently have a CD out but they say “It’s due to pure laziness, but we have plenty of material.” You can see Future Boots playing the Fireworks Extravaganza in Canyon the 4th of July! (Also check out OUR calendar of events for their June shows around town). Future Boots is available for all Children’s Birthday parties and Bar Mitzvah’s. And while you are on playing around on myspace (because you know you will be) go check these guys out. Myspace/ futureboots.com If you are interested in contacting these guys for booking an upcoming event or show you can call Rick Rueda at 806 640-4308. Future Boots will be more then just your musical entertainment for the event. This Trio Thrives and Strives to make you laugh until you pee your pants... (if that’s what you’re into).

Create An Individual Image In A Unique Place By Amy Baucom When is a spade not a Spaid? When it’s a tattoo shop with a beauty salon inside! That’s what you’ll find at Spaids Tattoo and Beauty Salon. Located at 3501 C Maverick Street, just behind Abuelo’s Mexican Embassy restaurant, Spaids is owned by Paul and April Diaz. The spelling of the shop’s name, April says, is a play on words of sorts. If you turn the “S”’s into dollar signs, it spells “paid” in the middle, like so: $paid$. Paul has been tattooing professionally for sixteen years, and his wife, April, has been a stylist for four years. Spaids is the first tattoo shop in Amarillo to have a salon inside. In addition to April, Megan Hermann is also a stylist and Steve Celaya, with 4-5 years experience in body piercing is also the manager, and Raymond Castaneda, a tattoo artist. April says that she has two more openings for stylists, and is currently looking to fill those positions. Spaids sees their regular customers who have followed them over to their new location, as well as new customers daily. The salon sees clients, old and new, each week as well. All of Spaids

www.amarilloscene.com work is hand-drawn, and Paul can take a sketch or picture and turn it into whatever tattoo the client desires. Prices for tattoos range from $50 to over $1500.00, depending on what the client wants. A deposit of $50 is required on all tattoos. The tattoos are done using disposable needles and tubing, and all nondisposable equipment is autoclaved. Both tattooists and Steve Celaya, who does piercing, wear gloves, aprons and facemasks while working. The tattoo inks are all top-quality, with Starbrite and Intenze being the two main brands used at Spaids. One brand might have a better color than the other, so they use both brands for the best outcome on tattoos. Paul says they can do any design, but “we try to pride ourselves in doing original designs. While Spaids does not do male genitalia, they will tattoo just about anything else, including ears, faces, tongues, lips, eyelids, and fingernails. Fingernail tattoos are semi-permanent, done with the tattoo gun, and will eventually grow out with the nail. The most intricate tattoos are ones with webbing, hair, scales or fine lines, and they are the more time consuming and involved, especially if they have a lot of color. With original designs, they can be sure to give the customer what they want. Spaids also offers regular and exotic piercing, as well as surface piercing. They do not do stainless steel surgical implants, nor sub dermal piercing. All piercing jewelry has UV flexible bars or stems, and the surface piercing, such as a star, can be done on any part of the skin. April says the least painful piercing would probably be the belly button, while the most painful would be the nipple. A deposit of $50.00 is required at time of appointment for piercing, as well. Before either piercing or tattooing, the skin is disinfected and shaved to assure against infection and to make the design flawless.
Each area is separate from the other, with a separate tattoo area, salon area and piercing area. The salon offers everything from cuts, colors, extensions and dreadlocks, and each stylist has different prices comparable to other salons in the area. They do not off er manicures or pedicures.
J U N E 2 0 0 9 • 7A April won 2nd place for Texas Stylist magazine in 2008, and was 2nd in the entire state for her hair styling capabilities. She does extreme, edgy styling, and is hoping to get the cover shot for this year’s Texas Stylist magazine. April learned her trade at Amarillo’s Exposito School of Hair Design did a hair show at the Women’s Expo in Amarillo. Spaids is open from 12pm to 7pm Sunday-Monday, and 10am-2am Tuesday through Saturday. You must be 18 to get a tattoo, regardless of parental consent, and no children are allowed in the tattoo or piercing rooms. They “cater to cowards”, and make sure that their clients are comfortable and relaxed. Be sure to go visit Paul, April, and the rest of the Spaids staff for your next tattoo, piercing, or hair style. With their friendly staff and homey atmosphere, you’re certain to leave happy.

It’s not about dieting, it’s about teaching you to make healthier choices every time you eat. What food choices help you break down other foods better? What foods turn into energy rather than fat? 806 Coffee Lounge- Making Amarillo A “Greener” Place By Amy Baucom Eco-friendly might not be a term frequently used to describe a coffee lounge, but it fits 806 Coffee Lounge just fine. Located at 2812 SW 6th, 806 is owned by Jason Barrett, and has been in business for nearly two years.
is each day from 3-7pm. Come in and enjoy a freshly-made Italian or French soda, carbonated on the premises, and made fresh without high-fructose corn syrup found in commercial soft drinks. Barrett tries to make everything they can right there in the lounge. He and his three employees continually look for ways to be green and are always trying to improve upon that.
Barrett based the concept of the coffee lounge on his experiences during travels all over the country. He felt as thought Amarillo was lacking what he considers a traditional coffee house, and thus, 806 was born. This is Barrett’s first business, and from the looks of it, he’s doing very well.
Recyclable or biodegradable paper products are used as often as possible, and only “green” cleaning products are used in the store, and glass ware is used as much as possible so that there is no waste. Jason, himself a vegetarian, has always been environmentally conscious and encourages others to recycle. He feels other businesses should try to be “more environmentally and socially conscious.”
With its relaxing atmosphere, and eclectic mix of miss-matched furniture and decorations, 806 is a popular place for students to hang out and study, or just chat over a cup of one of the lounge’s many flavors of coffee or tea. In fact, Barrett encourages anyone to just come and hang out, relax and recharge. He also knows that students can sometimes be strapped for cash, so gives a discount to students on Tuesdays, all day long. The coffee beans are ground upon ordering, so the customers get the freshest brew possible when they order.
The Lunar Lounge is available for smoking, although no cigars are allowed. Barrett is always trying out new air filtration systems, to keep the smoke from the Lunar Lounge from drifting through the rest of the store.
The lounge is family friendly, with people of all ages welcome, and features live music of all sorts, including rock, indie, jazz, and all other types of genres. Local artist’s works can be seen on display, and on the first Thursday of each month, a new artist is featured.
All the coffee used at 806 is from certified free trade companies; meaning that every one involved in the production of the coffee is paid a fair price. In fact, one of the Costa Rican producers help to provide schooling, medical care and other services to the country’s people. The most popular flavors at the lounge are regular coffee, lattes, and mocha, as well as Chai tea. 806 also serves beer and wine, and has a light food menu, including pizzas, hummus, wraps, salads and chili. Everything is vegetarian and vegan friendly. Food and drink combos are served each day until 11 am, and Happy Hour
Jewelry and art from local artists is available for sale, with the monies going directly to the artists. The 806 lounge takes no commission. 806 Coffee Lounge is open on weekdays from 7am until Midnight. Saturdays, they open at 8am, and Sundays at 9am. The casual employment atmosphere provides for more productive staff, and relaxed client atmosphere. Barrett stresses that 806 Coffee Lounge is “more than just a bar”, and with its casual, inviting, and relaxed atmosphere, where the staff knows 90% of their clients by name, it really is a “green” oasis in the mist of our busy city.

Nettez House of Desserts By Amy Baucom Walk into the small building located at 3008 SW 6th, and you feel as though you’ve entered an outdoor Parisian cafe. Metal tables and chairs are scattered throughout the dining room, each table complete with a vase of flowers set upon it. Nettez has been in business since August 19, 2008, and is the place to go to find all sorts of gourmet desserts or to have a small, intimate lu nch with a few friends. Annette Montano, owner of Nettez, had been employed by Amarillo National Bank for 20 years, making gourmet food and desserts for business meetings and other events. But a series of personal tragedies in her life made her realize that life is indeed too short, so she took her 401K and started Nettez. Since the building she’s in was formerly named “Friendz”, Montano saved the “Z”, and added her nickname, Nette, thus coming up with Nettez House of Desserts.

She will also be happy to make cheesecakes on request, and says that she has a lot of requests for the sugar-free offerings. Her top cake sellers are Banana Caramel cake, and the House Chocolate Cake. Annette does all types of cakes, including everything from wedding cakes, to Quinceanera, birthdays and more. Annette started out offering breakfast and lunch, but now just lunch is
available. She offers a varied selection of menu items, including Veggie Pizza, Philly Cheese Pitacalled the Tiffy Special, and Quiche. Her biggest sellers are the AJ Special, which is hot pita with turkey, cheese, the house sauce, chips and pickles. The daily specials are Quiche and soup. The soup is $3.00, and the Quiche, which comes with a salad, is $4.50. Most of her customers are women, but the Tiffy Special, named after her sister, is a big hit with the men that do come in. She has a good lunch crowd averaging approximately 100 customers a week. During the school year, students from San Jacinto Christian Academy come in, and Nettez off ers them free drinks with their meals. The drinks include everything from tea, coffee, sodas, sweet tea, bottled water and an assortment of juices and the energy drink Hiro. In addition to making her own fondant and icing, Annette also does free-hand design and can draw a design from a picture that the customer brings in to have put on the cake. If a f ondant cake is ordered, it is the only cake she works on that day, as they take a lot of time. She also offers filled cakes, including flavors such as raspberry, chocolate, caramel and lemon. In need of some consultation on your wedding? Nettez is the place to go. With a private consultation area, decked out with an antique sofa and welcoming chairs, it offers a casual environment for a one-on-one consultation for that all important day. The wedding consultations are by appointment only, but includes free tastings and tea service. Annette’s sister can also craft your bridal bouquet, if you desire, and she does this out of her own home. Nettez also offers catering, and uses disposable containers and utensils. They cater a lot of meetings for Pharmaceutical Reps and Doctors, as well
as birthdays. Nettez House of Desserts is a relaxing, inviting place to meet for lunch, and her customers enjoy the outdoorsy atmosphere. Some chapters of The Red Hat Society have met at Nettez, as well as Bridge clubs, Book societies, and bunko clubs. An nette herself painted the neat mural on the wall, as well as the floor and bathroom. Their hours are 11-6 Tuesday through Saturday, and the phone number is 806-731-0302. “It’s a good date place,” Montano says, and that’s a great way to describe Nettez. Whether on a date, meeting someone f or lunch, or if you just need a break and something sweet, remember Nettez House of Desserts.
