Derek Jefferson had always wanted to open up his own tattoo parlor. He first started tatting at a place called “Social Grind” which was a shop located on 10th street at the time. After that Derek moved to the Music Box. He and another guy named Tim were two of the first people to ever start doing tattoos at the Music Box. March 6th 1995 Derek opened up his own shop, Screamin Mimi Tattoo Parlor, on McMasters and was at that location for 10 years. “Opening your own shop is every tattooist main goal” Derek says, “It gives you more artistic freedom and gives opportunity to make choices to run things the way you want.” In 2005, they moved Screamin Mimi to 601 S. Prospect on Route 66. When they first found the place it was an older Duplex that they converted into the building that it is now. “6th Street was the best move” says Jefferson. Everything from the red exterior paint and metal design work on the outside to the clean, Zen-like interior, filled with Buddha statues and foreign artwork, shows the personality of the shop and it’s artists. When Derek was a child he was really into skateboard art, which is evident when you see the collage of skateboards on the walls of his tattoo space. His love of artistic expression displayed on skateboards led him to get his first tattoo at the age of 15 and carry that over into a career as a tattoo artist. He went to Tascosa High School and then proceeded to attend Amarillo College to become a Paramedic. The laid back, freedom filled life of a tattoo artist is quite different then Derek’s original path of being a Paramedic.

When Jefferson first started tattooing the “Tasmanian Devil” was that most popular icon. I asked him what was more popular these days and there are quite a few popularities. Tribals, names, and footprints from a birth certificate. Stars seem to be pretty big with the female population right now.

“Good tattoos aren’t cheap and cheap tattoos aren’t good” If you want a piece of art, be patient, it is a process. The best tattoos are ones that have personal or sentimental meaning to you. If you have an idea of a personal piece of artwork you would like to work with, you can leave a deposit, and one of the artist can draw up a sample of exactly what you are wanting.

At Screamin Mimi’s they have a combined experience of over 25 years. Derek has 16 years under his belt alone. If you are wanting to book with Derek be fore warned that there is usually a 2 to 3 week waiting period for an appointment. Most of his work consists of back pieces and sleeves and multiple session type of work. When you decide that you want to get a tattoo, do your research, go look at some portfolios and ask questions. A tattoo is a piece of artwork that you will have to live with the rest of your life, so you want it to be something you are proud of. And one that is done by someone who is experienced and cares about your tattoo experience. So come by Screamin Mimi, soak in the atmosphere, look through their portfolios and ask any questions at 601 S. Prosper, 374-3009. They also have two piercers on staff if that is something that you are more interested in.

how performing is handled in professional theatres. Many of the students go on to be theatre directors at other facilities after completing their studies at WTAMU. Some have even gone on to perform in Santa Fe and New Jersey.
“What is your favorite musical? Cabaret? Oklahoma? Or perhaps Shakespeare is more your genre. Or, maybe you’ve dreamt of being on the stage yourself. If so, then West Texas A&M University’s Branding Iron Theatre is waiting for you.
October’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof” features 29 students on stage, approximately 15 students backstage, and all students involved in the productions are under the supervision of the directors. Students are expected to work well together, and each student visits one on one with faculty during the semester. They have to work as a team, or they will not make it in the acting world. Networking is important, and this helps students get a foothold in the world of acting and stage production.
By Amy Baucom
The Branding Iron Theatre, located in the Fine Arts building on the WTAMU campus in Canyon, was first started in 1947 as a way to honour pioneer heritage. The first theatre was located in the recreation hall for servicemen, and the first play was Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” In 1959, the theatre was moved to the campus’ Old Fine Arts Building on 23 rd Street. The BIT started with opera, and evolved into musicals as well as opera. The BIT’s first musical was “The King and I.” Now housed in it’s current location, the theatre is celebrating the University’s Centennial with the musical “Fiddler on the Roof“. The musical will run for two weekends, and opens October 15. Royal Brantley, Department Head of Theatre and Dance since 1984, will star as Tevia. Coincidentally, Brantley’s father, Royal L. Brantley was Department Head of Music, and played the roll of Tevia in an earlier production of “Fiddler on The Roof“. Production and choreography for “Fiddler” are already in full swing, and all performers are students or Theatre Majors.
Brantley has worked professionally in regional theatre, and says New York and Broadway are tough. He says being in theatre is the perfect environment for learning to deal with rejection and accepting rejection is an important skill to learn. “Theatre is the collaborative art,” Brantley says. Theatre degrees prepare students for the real world by teaching communication, collaboration, attention to deadlines, public relations, and experience with techTommy the Hacker Every Wednesday Night nical skills.

The faculty includes not only Brantley, but Perry Crafton, Director of Theatre Program, Shawn Irish, Scenic and Lighting Designer, John Landon, Technical Director, and Anne Medlock, Faculty Costume Design. Each have their Master of Fine Arts degrees. The Branding Iron Theatre usually puts on 4-5 productions a year, but is only doing 4 this year. In November, they will put on “Sight Unseen”, a production that is strictly student-produced. “Sight Unseen” will be performed in the Happy State Bank Theatre, which is a smaller studio stage in the Fine Arts building. Shakespeare’s “12th Night” is scheduled for February. The theatre is not limited to just students of the Fine Arts, as several performers are not majors in the Fine Arts at all. Anyone may audition for a part, and if they do well, then the part will go to them. All performers are required to attend rehearsals, and practice is very important to education. Students learn the value of life lessons in real-world theatres, and they learn
Last year’s production of “Beauty and The Beast” broke records for the Branding Iron by being the most successful show and selling out each night of production. The • Birthday • Company • Christmas play, “The Madness of King George” turned out to be the sleeper hit of the year, enjoyed by both students and the audiences. It sold out too, and was held in the Happy State Bank studio. The faculty tries to keep student preferences in mind, selecting productions that students will be interested in. They try to give exposure to different genres of stage productions to both audiences and students. All costumes are designed and built to represent the time eras of the productions. Students are encouraged to audition for the play “Texas”, even though the Theatre Department isn’t directly affiliated with “Texas”. Crafton says they just “want the students to do something in theatre during the summer“. Productions are extra-curricular, and rarely pay for themselves. The BIT is primarily funded through tuition revenue bonds, although the Harrington Foundation contributed to the Fine Arts Complex, and Happy State Bank has contributed as well.
Tickets for the musical are $15.00 each or $7 for senior citizens, and children under 12. Students and faculty are not charged to attend. For more information, contact the Branding Iron Theatre box office at 806-651-2804; Monday through Friday from 1pm to 5pm. Credit Cards not accepted. Visit www.wtamu.edu/academics/ bit-box-office.aspx for a full schedule of this year’s productions.

Buffalo Thunder By Amy Baucom
DINER
At West Texas A and M University in Canyon, there is an organization that is dedicated to taking care of the University Mascot, Thunder X. Sean Burns, University Police Chief, oversees the Herdsmen, and acts as their advisor. The current membership in the Herdsmen is 15, including six prospects, according to Preston “PNut” Montgomery, current President of the organization. The Herdsmen were f ormed October 15, 1977, by Chris Black, Rick “Corny” Cornelison, and Weldon Trice, Dean of Men. These men recognized that something was needed to boost school spirit, and decided a live buffalo mascot was just the thing to do it. The first mascot, Thunder I, aka Lollipop, was donated by RJ Lee, owner of Amarillo’s Big Texan Steak House. And thus, a new tradition and organization was born. The original group grew to approximately fifty men, who are considered the Founding Fathers of the Herdsmen Organization. Because of Cornelison’s nick-name, the tradition of the members having nick-names was also started. The current mascot, Thunder X is a 17 month old bull buffalo, and is kept at the pens at the Agriculture Education Center. Although small in stature, at 750 approximately pounds, Thunder X is powerful, and must be worked with every day. Buffalo are intelligent animals and they are constantly learning. The Herdsmen have found the best way to train is through positive reinforcement, and Thunder can tell an experienced handler from an inexperienced one. Thunder X came off Cook’s Bison Ranch in Indiana, and replaces Jack, who was retired last year. Thunder is taken to every home game, and makes his opening run at the start of the game, ahead of the WTAMU football team. Four Herdsmen are on the ropes, two on front, and two on back. Thunder wears a special harness to attach the ropes to, and is run around the field much to the delight of the crowd. During the game, Thunder and the Herdsmen spend their time behind the south end zone of the Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. He is also run after touch downs on the opposite end of the stadium, and during half-time, if time allows. Because of NCAA rules, live mascots of any kind are not allowed at Conference Games. They don’t take Thunder to away games, because of a lack of space to keep him before and after the games. Bef ore each game, the Herdsmen circle up in prayer for their safety, Thunder’s safety, and a good game. Thunder X travels several places throughout the semester, including parades in Plainview, Floydada, Petersburg, and the Homecoming Parade in Canyon.

HOMEMADE BREAD BUNS & DINNER ROLLS This year’s Homecoming Parade is Saturday, October 10th at 11:00am along 4th Avenue in Canyon. Thunder and the Herdsmen will be there, and this will give people a chance to see him in action somewhere other than on the playing field. He will also be at the Homecoming game that evening. Thunder also appears on Campus for Welcome Back week, when the new semesters begin, Buff Branding, and New Student Orientation, as well as the President’s home for a cookout to welcome incoming Freshmen in the Fall. Foreman Justin “Beetle” Trammel’s main job is to keep an eye on who’s participating, keeping up with handling and the body language of prospects. Since large, wild animals can be easily distracted, rapid movements are unsafe or loud, while slow deliberate movement is considered quiet. Montgomery likens it to kids who use their “inside” or quiet voices, versus their “outside” or loud voices.

Practice with Thunder takes place each week, for two hours an evening depending on the buffalo’s attitude and energy level. Montgomery stresses the importance of being at practice, saying if there’s no work, then there’s no play. The Herdsmen take excellent care of the mascot, and can tell when he’s having a bad day. Trammel is in charge of deciding whether or not it’s a good day to take Thunder out for appearances. Public safety comes first, as does that of the buffalo. The Herdsmen put their personal safety last, to assure that the buffalo and the public are not at risk. The public is encouraged not to get too close to the buffalo during the games, to en-

Herdsmen rules state that no alcohol, smoking, or other unbecoming behavior is to be engaged in while the men are in their Herdsmen attire. No alcohol is allowed at any Herdsmen event, and no Herdsmen-affiliated attire can be worn to any establishment where alcohol is the main revenue. Members who have proved themselves hard working, dedicated, and served at least two years as a Herdsmen can apply for Alumni status at the end of their time. All the Herdsmen enjoy their job and role in caring for and working with Thunder X. “Running the games is a reward; it’s icing on the cake.” Says Montgomery with a grin. And for the fans at the games, it’s a good way to see an icon of the Texas Panhandle and his handlers showing their spirit for the team.
