Just one hour north of San Francisco, this AVA (American Viticultural Area) has around seventy wineries, nearly all of which remain family-owned.

ZINFANDEL – DID YOU KNOW THAT... ► Zinfandel aka ‘Zin’ arrived in America from Croatia in the 1820’s.

Winemaking in Dry Creek Valley stretches back 140 years and it is home to some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in the world. But, while it may be famous for these intense, concentrated Zins, its close proximity to the Russian River has given rise to the production of beautifully balanced Chardonnays and elegant Sauvignon Blancs.

► The grape made its way to California during 'The Gold Rush' in the 1850’s where it thrived in the State’s warm climate. ► DNA research carried out in California in the 1990's confirmed that Zinfandel is identical to the Italian grape, Primitivo.

In the 1920’s, Giovanni Pedroncelli purchased a small plot of vines in California’s Dry Creek Valley. His first challenge upon arriving in American was surviving Prohibition which persisted until 1933. He then set out to establish his winery as one of the leading estates in the US planting initially Zinfandel and later Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

THE DOURO VALLEY Douro Valley, Portugal

"The dramatic Douro Valley, for long dedicated almost entirely to port production, is now also a significant producer of robust, characterful red table wines." JancisRobinson.com

The Douro Valley is a place of extremes. Located up river from the city of Porto, it endures freezing cold winters and staggeringly hot summers with little rainfall. The vineyards exist on slopes made of granite that are so steep they can reach up to 60 degrees. These conditions result in low-yielding vines that are capable of producing red grapes with very high tannins and natural grape sugars – the building blocks for great red wine and Port.

PORT COUNTRY ► The Douro is made up of 3 regions: the Baixo Corgo, the Cima Corgo and the Douro Superior. ► The Baixo Corgo is the smallest of the three but has the greatest concentration of vineyards. ► The Douro is dominated by indigenous grape varieties - Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão for the reds and Rabigato, Viosinho and Malvasia Fina for the whites.

Bodegas Monte Pio is a family-run winery located in Ribadumia in Galicia. It was established in 1979 and since 2014 has been under the stewardship of Pablo Martinez, the current oenologist and vineyard manager.
