Welcome to #DrinksToTheWorld
Welcome to Amathus 2017 Autumn Promotion Brochure As we prepare to say goodbye to the unpredictability of the British summer weather, we pray for an Indian summer, whilst secretly looking forward to cosy nights in with the heating on, new TV shows, the return of the tights and the countdown to Christmas. Autumn is an amazing season, each year bringing a unique set of events; the leaves begin to change colour and fall from the trees, our furry friends go into hibernation, and it’s also the season of conker wars, pumpkins and trick or treating. For us, a new season means the return of the Amathus Promotion Brochure. Inside this year’s Autumn edition, is a superb mix of offers from some of our top premium producers, with an outstanding selection of wines, Champagnes, spirits, beers and softs. As well as offering a fantastic selection of promotions, we will also be showcasing our newest agency brands, which have recently joined the Amathus family. Featuring Cusqueña, a Peruvian premium quality lager from the city of Cusco; Swedish craft beer brand, Nils Oscar; L.N Mattei Cap Corse, an aperitif wine aromatised with quinquina, and Svensk, a premium vodka from Sweden. To top it off, we are also delighted to introduce some fantastic new wine agencies; including our newest Soave from Murari, Burgundy producers Château Philippe le Hardi, Knight's Point from Marlborough, and the very unique Lumiere Umeshu; an utterly divine Japanese plum wine. We hope you enjoy what’s inside.

Wines Picking a wine is as much about mood as it is about taste. We may have had a fabulous summer, but when it starts to go dark at 7.30pm and the evening chills set in, it’s difficult to pretend that autumn is not upon us. So as the harvest season sets in, it’s time to let go of those summer favourites - say bye bye to the Albariños, sparkling pinks and Provençal rosés and instead, embrace the warming, robust wines of autumn, inspired by this wonderful seasons colour palette of ruby reds, golden whites and deep rosés. Our palates hanker for whites that are a little bolder in flavour; oaked Chardonnays such as Château Philippe le Hardi Saint Aubin 'En Vesvau' Blanc 2015 work extremely well or indeed a wonderfully rich Viognier from South African producer, Idiom. For those of you erring on the sweeter side, the Lumiere Umeshu, an enchanting plum wine from Japan, is taste heaven or how about an awardwinning Zilliken Riesling from Mosel. Another classic being crowned the new G&T is the ‘White & Dry’ – made with Calém White & Dry Port and tonic, perfect for autumn imbibing. As for reds, the time is right to stock up on rich, robust wines with big flavours and character. Our top choices are Château Philippe le Hardi Mercurey 1er Cru Les Puillets 2015, a rich, opulent, raspberry flavoured red, recently awarded gold medal at the 2017 International Wine Challenge; or the dreamy Cuvelier Los Andes Colección Blend 2012, loaded with blackberry and spice. Rosé is generally considered a summer drink but there is no reason why you have to give it up once the seasons change. Autumn calls for a rosé with depth of colour and evocative flavours of rose hip and raspberries. Our newest agency rosé, La Serie Folium Grenache Rosé 2016, ticks all the boxes. Every season needs fizz, but instead of the usual Champagne or Prosecco, why not try one of our award-winning sparkling wines from Luxembourg; the Bernard-Massard Cuvée de L'Écusson NV, awarded Platinum – Best in Show at the 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards or the Millésimé 2014, which was awarded Platinum.

World Class Burgundies, with a certain 'je ne sais quoi' C H ÂT EAU P HILIP P E L E HA RDI
Right in the heart of the Burgundy region, south of Beaune, on a hillside vineyard located in the village of Santenay, stands the Château de Santenay. This magnificent castle, with roots dating back to the 11 th century, was once the main residence of Philip the Bold (Philippe le Hardi), son of the King of France, John the Good (Jean le Bon); hence why the château is commonly called 'Château Philippe le Hardi'. Philippe le Hardi was the most illustrious owner of Château de Santenay. A brilliant politician, Philippe was responsible for a magnificent chapter in the history of Burgundy, founding the 'Valois of Burgundy' dynasty, which would reign for over a century. Château de Santenay, is one of the larger wine-producing estates in Burgundy. This prestigious property, consisting of the château with its remarkable glazed tile roof and vineyards, is the result of an ancient heritage intimately linked to the history of wine production in Burgundy. The wine estate consists of 98 hectares

of vineyards, where the 'noble' Burgundian grape varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown. The wines are aged in the classic Burgundian tradition within the castle cellars. Gold medal winner at the International Wine Challenge 2017, the Mercurey 1er Cru ‘Les Puillets’ 2015, is rich with opulent raspberry fruit flavours, has a ripe and inviting body with a wonderful balance and aroma. A truly stunning example of a classic red Burgundy.

slopes, and endless sunshine justifiably lend the Saarburger Rausch vineyard its status, not only as a VDF classified site but as one of the finest Riesling producers the world has to offer. Here in Saarburg (a picturesque town on the Saar in Mosel, Germany) is where generations have developed their expertise in Zilliken Rieslings. The winery is currently headed by Hanno, Ruth and Dorothee Zilliken and covers 11 hectares growing only one variety: Riesling. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken Butterfly Riesling Feinherb 2016 Floral leafiness, smoky minerality and crisp green notes of young apricots. On the palate, bright flavours of lemon and apple lead into a pleasing spice finish. Drinking beautifully now, so open a bottle, put your feet up and enjoy!
Rather than following international trends and styles, the winery believes in focusing on timeless winemaking traditions, beginning with their bottle labels, the same as those their grandfather placed on his bottles. Their high professional knowledge in combination with joy and commitment guarantees a range of fruity and noble wines of exceptional quality. The quality of their grapes is crucial to who they are and what they do and as a result, all of their wines are 100% estate grown and

Autumn Aromatics Wines
Autumn Aromatics Crisp nights call for darker and spicier spirits to warm us up from the autumnal chill. Whether you’re snuggling up in front of a fire or getting set for Halloween, we’ve got an unbeatable selection that will bring the essence of autumn to life… so here goes… Joseph Cartron intensely tickles our taste buds with their latest heather flower honey liqueur, Cartron Miel, produced in the Landes forest in the South West of France. The honey flavour is so immense, that the only way you can describe it, is jarred honey in a cup… absolutely delish! With undertones of aniseed and a subtle, layered, almost textures, creaminess, our newest agency Svensk Vodka is the only vodka you should be sipping on this autumn. Produced from distilled Swedish winter wheat and crystal clear mineral water from Lake Vättern, Svensk Vodka is the closest one can get to Sweden in a bottle. Also making an appearance is the Amathus classics; from the legendary Rhum Clément and the famously warming Bobby’s Schiedam Dry Gin; filled with autumn notes of cubeb pepper, cinnamon, cloves and fennel; to the crème de la crème of producers including Pisco 1615, Spirit of Hven and Del Maguey Mezcal. Whether you’re a connoisseur or a newcomer, get ready to be pulled into a world of exceptional brands.

THE
NORDIC WAY
OR
THE HIGHWAY… One of the highlights of the Swedish calendar are crayfish parties. Every August Swedes go crazy putting on conical paper hats, lighting moon shaped paper lanterns, eating lots of fresh water crayfish, drinking beer and snaps and singing incredibly silly songs. Up until 1994, it was forbidden to fish for crayfish until the first Wednesday in August, whereupon lots of Swedes would celebrate "The Crayfish Premiere" by throwing a party. A crayfish party, known as kräftskiva, is a big event enjoyed by all. Traditionally held outside under the flicker of paper lanterns, but more often, rain or pesky mosquitoes lead people to abandon the idyllic setting for indoor comfort. One things for sure, you need a lot of crayfish for a good party! Swedes would normally allow about 500g (1lb) per person. There is not a lot of eating in crayfish, even with a generous 500g per person. Given the large quantities of snaps consumed at the meal, it is important to fill up on something else: cheese is normally the answer. Drinks wise, the traditional accompaniment, other than snaps, is beer. One of our favourite snaps is Skåne Akvavit. It is mild, smooth and well-balanced, flavoured with caraway and hints of fennel and aniseed. An alternative, if you prefer a stronger flavoured snaps, is O.P. Anderson, as well as Linie Aquavit and Aalborg Akvavit. For something a little more aromatic why not try Spirit of Hven Summer Spirit. If you would like to try some Swedish beer at your crayfish party, then Nils Oscar is the one. Steeped in traditon with a modern twist; the Nils Oscar range of premium craft beers offers a pilsner style lager with a light malty flavour and a bittersweet finish; a fine accompaniment to crayfish. Traditionally, snaps should be served in special long-stemmed glasses, called pukka glasses, but if you haven’t any of these stashed away in your cupboard, then shot glass will do the trick. Every glass of snaps is preceded by toasting your fellow guests, looking everyone in the eye and then saying skål (cheers), before downing the snaps in one. Wishing you all a very happy crayfish season… skål!

THE RISE (& COMEBACK) OF APÉRITIFS If you were asked to identify the key turning points for cocktails at the moment what are you going to say? Gin, small batch whisky, Prohibition cocktails? What about vermouth?
(often opting for a lower alcohol option in persuit of a healthier lifestyle) and our fashion-sense, seeks even more authenticity and sophistication.
Vermouths, amaros and bitter liqueurs are a bartender's dream; finely crafted, layers of flavour, centuries of tradition and perfection, unique production methodology and secret formulas.
We strive to keep ahead of this revolutionising trend with our ever expanding portfolio of vermouths and liqueurs. Ranging from the classic dry vermouths such as Dolin Vermouth de Chambéry to the not so classics, made from all sorts of weird and wonderful botanicals, including Ferdinand’s Saar Dry Riesling Vermouth, infused with vintage Grand Cru Riesling; Italian vermouth brand Contratto, and the aristocrat of Italian liqueurs, Meletti.
We take so much care to extract the finest nuances of flavour from our cocktails, experimenting with scientific and creative details, yet the element that will modify our drinks more radically than any other is in danger of being an afterthought, or at least a poorly informed choice of the usual suspects. But that is changing; some of us have taken to modifying our own modifiers or even producing our own. Before taking such steps it seems sensible to explore the rich tapestry of available products more fully. There is a panoply of houses, maisons and bodegas producing wholly unique labours of love, of all styles. New players are entering the market - seeing the inevitability of demand - old recipes are being unearthed and the global marketplace is bringing ancient producers to new markets. The rise of the aromatic cocktail is only beginning and the consumption of vermouth is set to change as well. The Aperol Spritz is already a cliché and the Negroni twist is the mark of every bartender's creativity and countless cocktail competitions. The Americano and long, vermouth-based coolers, particularly the V&T, are appearing on more and more cocktail lists as our palates, lifestyle

For something a little more off the radar try our newest agency, L.N Mattei Cap Corse from Corsica. Rather than the usual wormwood which is typically used to make vermouth, this aperitif wine is aromatised with quinquina (a bush tree from central America producing quinine); making it the ideal aromatic autumn filler for your favourite cocktails. So depending on what you’re after, we’ve got an extremely versatile range that taste just as good on their own, served over ice as they do mixed in cocktails. An organised tasting of the Amathus range will show you things you'd never imagine and change your world view entirely. #AutumnAromatics

Beers and Ciders
Beers and Ciders Beer is probably one of the oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic drinks around, being the third most popular drink, after water and tea. Craft, artisan, pale ale, IPA, stout or lager, whatever it may be, our passion is simply great beer with amazing flavours… so welcome to the Amathus world of beer. With autumn on the horizon, it’s time to welcome the newest beers on the block. First up we have a Peruvian classic, all the way from the city of Cusco, Cusqueña; a super-premium lager, renowned for its crispness, purity and exhilarating freshness. Second in line is Swedish craft beer brand Nils Oscar, bursting onto the scenes in 1996 with their God Lager, India Ale, Bordsöl Organic Pale Ale and Organic Bordslager. Considered an all-rounder, Nils Oscar is equally suited to grandmother’s old recipes as to the more modern taste buds. Not so much a beer but a cider is another of our newest agencies, Hoila Cider from northern Italy. Hoila Cider is the first apple alpine cider, made from the purest apples grown in South Tyrol… it’s mouth-wateringly good.

Beers and Ciders Minerals
Minerals Consumers are continuously looking for new and exciting things to go with their spirits, whether it be tonics, syrups, purées or cordials; it has to offer flavour, refreshment, enjoyment and most important of all, be different! Bartenders have moved on from asking whether you’d like your drink with ice or a slice; instead it’s about how many millimetres of this they can add or how many dashes of that. These days’ mixers and softs are just as important as the spirit you mix it with. Meet a tonic water that is not equipped with the usual citrus notes, but exciting cucumber notes. Dr. Polidori’s Cucumber Tonic Water is delicately infused with herbal essences, creating an aromatic filler for your favourite spirits. Apart from the obvious G&T, mix it with Cálem White & Dry Port and garnish with lemongrass, a cucumber wheel and a slice of lemon. Keep yourself refreshingly hydrated this autumn, with our still and sparkling bottled water from Sant Aniol. The Sant Aniol natural spring flows through the Girona region of La Garrotxa in Spain and is naturally filtered through layers of volcanic rock, producing an exceptionally balanced spring water that can be enjoyed by all.
