Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2020-2021 AHG Program Year! This is the year that I thought might never come… 25 years of ministry. The Lord knew that AHG was to continue despite my doubt and has remained faithful to His promise given to the founders so many years ago. He chose the time and the place, the people and the resources, the message and the vision. AHG was CHOSEN to exist for a time such as this. And what exactly is “this time”? The world is in chaos and desperate for the refreshing water that only the Lord will provide. In the noise of the time, God may seem so far away. It is difficult to hear the “still small voice” as mentioned in 1 Kings 19:12, NIV: “After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” Despite the voice of God being sometimes difficult to discern, we know that He remains faithful. Our cities may be burning, our people divided, our hearts stone cold, yet He remains and His calling on our lives remains. Webster defines the word “chosen” as the one who is the object of choice or of divine favor. In the New Testament, “chosen” is almost always a translation of the Greek eklego, meaning “to pick out, chose, select for oneself.” Generally, in the New Testament, it is God who chooses and it is those who choose God who are chosen by Him. AHG strives to engrave on the hearts of girls that “therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12, NIV). As followers of Christ we are called to walk worthy of our calling, and walking worthy is outwardly demonstrated by the fruits of the Spirit. This year as we share in the celebration of our Silver Anniversary, may we remember that as His chosen people, we are to love as Jesus loved and serve as Jesus served. May we not just bask in the promises of our Maker but actively share the good news of our Sovereign Lord with others. This world has always been in need of this message, but with today’s “earthquakes and fires”, it seems more important than ever. My prayer for this special year is that the Lord is glorified in every way because His chosen people have intentionally shared His love through the activities and Ministry of AHG. His powerful love cannot be kept under a bushel, but rather, His light overwhelms the darkness thus impacting cities, communities, and the world in His name. Today is THE day to say “yes” to the sometimes “still small voice” of our Sovereign, Almighty God, and light the candle of Christ’s love in our dark world. Be encouraged. We have been chosen exactly for a time such as this. Until next time,

Patti Garibay AHG Founder & Executive Director

BEHIND THE COVER Patti Garibay, AHG Founder & Executive Director, also known as “Gamaw,” and Maeble spent the afternoon taking photos for the cover of Patti’s new book, Why Curse the Darkness When You Can Light a Candle? The highly-anticipated book details Patti’s legacy and that of the AHG Ministry. What started as a gathering of concerned parents and girls around a small kitchen table has now grown to be one of the largest scout-type organizations in the world. The Garibays’ story chronicles the 25-year journey of American Heritage Girls from its humble beginnings, the insurmountable problems, and the joy of seeing the providential hand of God map out every detail. Seeing lives changed and making sure each girl knows they are loved was enough for Patti to suit up and get in the battle. Armored with trust and obedience, Patti’s message resonates with others who have a passion for making a difference yet struggle with the fear of inadequacy. With Christ, all things are possible.

Maeble, a Tenderheart from OH3130, donned an AHG Uniform for an extra-fun day at her Gamaw’s house!

Appropriate for mature audiences, parental discretion advised.

Three generations of AHG! Rachael, AHG Senior Director of Ministry Expansion, joined daughter Maeble and mom Patti on photo shoot day.

We LOVE our Patriots! Many Patriot girls go on to work toward their Stars & Stripes Award, AHG’s highest recognition. Candidates gain a first-hand understanding of the servant’s heart required to lead with integrity and humility, preparing girls for responsibility as they transition to adulthood. Congratulations to all the Stars & Stripes Award Recipients! AHGSERVICE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ACTIVE CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES

Service projects look a little different in today’s circumstances, but that hasn’t stopped American Heritage Girls across the country from giving back to their communities! Troop leaders looking for service ideas that are compatible with social-distancing and virtual settings are invited to download the AHG in a Virtual Setting and Service in a Virtual Setting addendum from AHG’s online resource library.

HAVE A STORY OF SERVICE OR A CREATIVE IDEA YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? Submit your photos and project details to AHG via https://bit.ly/AHGphoto for a chance to be featured on social media or in a future issue of Heritage Headlines!

AHG FAMILY REMEMBERS FALLEN HEROES ON MEMORIAL DAY Memorial Day is a holiday devoted to honoring America’s heroes. American Heritage Girls across the country took part in important ceremonies, service projects, and outreach programs recognizing the ultimate sacrifice made by brave men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces. Typical Memorial Day Parades were cancelled this year, but AHG girls like Grace, a Pioneer in FL1231, joined their families to honor the fallen. Pictured here with her mom Teri, Troop Coordinator, and her dad Greg, Outdoor Coordinator, Grace and her family placed flags on veteran headstones this year. “As American Heritage Girls and volunteers, we vow to honor our country and serve in our community. Our hearts go out to the family and friends that have lost loved ones who have served our great nation,” said Teri.

TEXAS GIRL’S QUARANTINE CARE PACKAGES BRING SMILES TO COMMUNITY In the early weeks of COVID-19 quarantining, families across the country scrambled to find ways to fill their kids’ newfound time at home. But American Heritage Girls already knew the solution to extra family time at home—service! As part of the Together as a Family Badge, Abigail, a Tenderheart in TX2237, bundled up some supplies to take to widows and widowers in her church family. She packaged up food and basic supplies like bread, canned foods, jam, paper towels and the ever-so-popular quarantine necessity—toilet paper! Even at a young age Abigail knows what it means to embody Scripture’s call to care for widows and her neighbors.

FLORIDA PATRIOT’S LEVEL AWARD SERVICE PROJECT BENEFITS LOCAL KIDS IN NEED Sarah, a Patriot in FL0001, is working toward earning her Dolley Madison Award, the highest achievement in the AHG Level Awards Program. While the Dolley Madison Level Award has recently been replaced by the Abigail Adams Level Award, the need to complete a service project remains. Girls are now required to plan, organize, promote, and implement a Multi-Troop activity community outreach event with no less than 25 hours of participation, 10 more hours than previously required. Level Award service projects provide girls the opportunity to both give back and lead other youth from their Troop. Sarah organized a carnival-themed event for local American Heritage Girls, providing an opportunity for service and fun! The price of admission to the event was a brand-new stuffed animal to benefit children through a local police department. “My prayer in faith is that the stuffed animals are a blessing and provide comfort to the children who receive them,” said Sarah. GIRLSTORIES INCREDIBLE TALES OF LEADERSHIP, VOLUNTEERING & FRIENDSHIP

AHG END-OF-YEAR AWARD CEREMONY SUCCESS STORIES AHG End-of-Year Award Ceremonies are a special time for Troops, often the most-anticipated event of the Program Year! Much like graduations and other celebrations this spring, End-of-Year Ceremonies were forced to take on a different look. But AHG Troops are nothing if not resilient! Troop leaders across the country got creative and made the most of the ceremonies, keeping the spirit of fun alive for the girls despite the unfortunate circumstances! Many Troops, like IA2016, hosted drive-through ceremonies, while Troops like KY7070 integrated a modified, sociallydistanced flag ceremony into the celebration. VA1318 even gave girls the chance to hop out of the car and walk across the AHG Creed Word Bridge to commemorate girls advancing to the next Program Level! CT2016 got creative in capturing the event by using a zoom lens, photographing each girl’s special moment from a safe distance. AHG girls are blessed to have such creative and dedicated volunteers to make this unpredictable year’s end such a special and memorable time!

AHG HOSTS MEDICAL HERO WEEK AHG Medical Hero Week was a hit! The week-long virtual event was full of God-honoring activities that supported medical heroes while teaching girls how to become medical heroes in their own lives. Hundreds of girls tuned into three YouTube Live events throughout the week. AHG Founder & Executive Director, Patti Garibay, led a medical bag-themed devotional written specially for AHG girls, and two interview-style events allowed girls to live-chat their questions about the medical field to two physician friends of AHG: Dr. Allan Sawyer, a member of the Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Assistance Response Team, and Dr. Gail-Marie Walter, who specializes in family practice in Lenoir City, TN. Dr. Walter previously served as Troop Coordinator for TN0215,, a Knoxville-area Troop, and is currently serving her daughter’s Troop, TN0413, as an Adult Member. Girl Members learned and had fun while creating homemade face masks, preparing healthy fruit and vegetable rainbows, building their own spiritual “medical bags”, crafting organ t-shirts to learn anatomy and so much more! Plus, the virtual event was the perfect time to pre-release the Medical Badge—one of the ten new badges available in the new AHG Girl Handbooks! Thanks to this event, girls even got the chance to serve their community by doing things such as, donating their homemade face masks to local medical facilities, inspiring others with encouraging artwork, and sending cards/gifts to medical professionals. The success of AHG Medical Hero Week led the AHG Program Department to plan more virtual events for Troops this Program Year. EARNINGBADGES LEARNING LIFE SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE

HIKING BADGE Hiking is a wonderful way to spend time outdoors. It’s also a great way to get some exercise. There are many things to see on a hike. You can hike in the city or in a forest looking for wildlife. Wherever you decide to hike, remember to plan ahead, dress appropriately, keep safe, and learn the necessary skills to have an enjoyable time.

American Heritage Girls loves encouraging girls to connect with their God-given abilities through exploring His marvelous creation. The Hiking Badge is just one badge in the Outdoor Skills Frontier that gives girls the opportunity to get outside! This summer, Peyton, Kate, and Lillie of VA1010 hiked 20 miles of the Appalachian Trail, strengthening their friendship and relationship with our Creator while fulfilling requirements for the Hiking Badge. Nothing bonds a Troop like a joint adventure in the great outdoors!

KITCHEN SCIENTIST BADGE It is often thought that experiments can only be performed in a laboratory. However, you can be a scientist in your own kitchen laboratory discovering all kinds of scientific knowledge. When COVID-19 restrictions began, families across the country scrambled to find fun activities to fill the suddenly copious amount of time spent at home. In the spirit of resourcefulness, MacKenzie from Mobile-area Troop AL2345 cracked open her AHG Girl Handbook and discovered all the exciting experiments just waiting to be made in the Kitchen Scientist Badge! By combining common household items like dish soap, hydrogen peroxide, and yeast, MacKenzie put her kitchen chemistry skills to the test and made every girl’s favorite silly experimental substance: elephant toothpaste!

TEXTILE ARTS BADGE Art is found in many places and can encompass a variety of mediums. Items made of a plant, animal, or synthetic fibers, and constructed for a practical use or for sheer decoration, constitute a textile art. Be creative and have fun turning fabric or fibers into a work of art while exploring this badge. “She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands” –Proverbs 31:13, NIV Chicago-area Troop IL9522 found a way to continue the AHG spirit of faith, service, and fun this Program Year, despite not being able to meet for regular Troop meetings! Girls across the Windy City earned their Textile Arts Badge together by trying their hand at tie-dying everything from socks to t-shirts from their homes. Together with their families, girls swapped photos of their colorful creations together, sharing in the one-ofa-kind fun that is tie-dying!

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS CHALLENGES TROOPS to

SHARE THE GOSPEL AROUND THE WORLD

16 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

Samaritan’s Purse is partnering with AHG again this year to send Operation Christmas Child (OCC) shoeboxes to children in need around the world. Each one of these shoeboxes is prayerfully packed by you and becomes a tangible expression of God’s love to a boy or girl. Samaritan’s Purse partners with local churches to distribute the gifts and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the follow-up discipleship program, The Greatest Journey. To inspire Troops to start preparing their shoeboxes and their hearts for sharing the gospel message, AHG and OCC partnered to create “Christmas in July Week”. The week-long festivities in late July ultimately served as a reminder that Jesus is the greatest Christmas gift we have to share with others. Girls learned that as Christ-followers, we have the opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus through our generosity to others.

Samaritan’s Purse/OCC is AHG’s longest-running Program Alliance and has been an amazing friend to the ministry over the past 25 years. In honor of AHG’s 25th Anniversary, AHG and OCC are challenging each of the nearly 1,200 AHG Troops to pack 25 shoeboxes this year! Troops are encouraged to post pictures from their packing efforts with the hashtag #AHGOCC25 on social media. Participating Troops will receive a special OCC/AHG 25th Anniversary commemorative patch and be entered into a drawing for a Troop volunteer to attend the March 2021 OCC International Vision Trip to help deliver shoeboxes.

To enter the drawing and receive patches, Troops must report the total number of shoeboxes packed and number of patches needed no later than November 30, 2020. Please enter your counts using the AHG Shoebox collection form link: https://bit.ly/AHGshoeboxcounts20

WE ARE

18 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. –Colossians 3:12, NIV God carefully and intricately thought through the creation of each person long before He made plans to create the earth. He chose us for a particular time—calling us to a special purpose. God had each person in mind when He hovered over the vast surfaces of the deep waters, and before He added magnificent light to the darkness. Long before we knew Him, He knew us and loved us. What a wonderful blessing to be selected, favored, and hand-picked by God! He shows divine favor upon us and has selected us to be His. God chose His followers to bring glory to His name! God has chosen AHG to minister to girls and for you to be part of the ministry. God chose us, and God doesn’t make mistakes! AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS | 19

CHOSEN FOR A TIME SUCH AS THIS We have a rich heritage in Christ, identified as His chosen ones, and the ability to build traditions in AHG around Biblical principles. When we stop to think about our purpose and vocation here on earth, what often comes to mind is the story of Esther in the Scriptures. Like Esther, we have been created “for a time such as this” (Esther 4:14, NIV).

20 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

Knowing God has placed us where we live for a specific time and purpose; it is our responsibility to love and serve others just like the Son of God. With the freedom afforded in our country, we can freely explore God’s creation and growing His Kingdom by building up the AHG community.

CHOSEN to Be Change Agents God placed us here, today with a purpose—to spread the gospel message and exemplify Christ’s love to all. A self-identified “justice mindset” is a common trait among members of Generation Z (those born between 1999 and 2015, according to Barna researchers). Perhaps your girl has strong opinions on today's hot-topic issues and she wants to jump into “the conversation.” Her heart for advocacy is an excellent characteristic! After all, God calls each of us to be change agents in our fallen world. The Book of Proverbs urges God’s people to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute” (Proverbs 31:8-9, NIV). The question is: how does your girl go about seeking justice in a way that is Godhonoring and ultimately brings others to know Christ? It’s easy in today’s social media culture to “join the conversation” by posting, liking, and sharing other peoples’ words, but advocating for justice goes beyond words. Real change really begins with action. Help your American Heritage Girl on her journey as a “holy change agent” as she upholds what is Godly and true through Christ-honoring service to those in need.

CHOSEN to Be God’s Hands and Feet To raise the next generation of holy change agents AHG believes it’s every family’s responsibility to teach their children about the importance of exhibiting God’s heart for justice by standing up for others who face injustice, mistreatment, or marginalization. Troops are encouraged to work toward service in their own communities. Jesus served the poor, the “unclean”, and the sinners right in his own community. He ate with them, He spoke with them, and He stood up for them in times of need. By seeking out local ministries and organizations devoted to serving the underprivileged, marginalized, and disadvantaged in your own community you show your girls the impact that their service can make in our world. Commit to regularly serving these local organizations, and celebrate your Troop’s contribution to the community. Together you can show her how to change the world to be a more welcoming, and love-filled place.

CHOSEN to Light a Candle

CHOSEN to Continue the Legacy

Patti Garibay, AHG’s Founder & Executive Director, heeded the call to be God’s hands and feet when He planted a seed of faith in her heart. It took a courageous leap away from her Girl Scouts USA leadership role and a reminder from her dad to “light a candle” in the darkness to find a solution to the God-sized hole she saw within the organization. Patti, along with fellow concerned parents, founded a new scout-type ministry to disciple their girls. Hundreds of thousands of accomplished alumnae, developed leaders, and changed communities later, it’s safe to say that the candle they lit in 1995 still burns brightly today. You can read more about Patti’s story, the founding of AHG, and the power of God’s faithfulness through it all in her new book, Why Curse the Darkness When You Can Light a Candle available today at whycursethedarkness.com.

In the 25 years since the ministry’s inception, Patti’s candle is still aglow and shining brightly as God continues to show up for American Heritage Girls. This 2020-2021 Program Year looks a lot different than any other year in AHG’s history. It can be easy to feel discouraged or ill-equipped to continue with “normal” AHG meeting and programming in our uncertain times. But the commitment and resiliency of AHG girls and volunteers is unmatched! Despite the public health restrictions in place to protect the most vulnerable in our communities, AHG Troops continue the legacy of faith, service, and fun in their communities in responsible, resourceful, and socially-distant ways! For more information on how to successfully continue the great work of AHG this year, albeit in different ways, we invite members to read AHG in a Virtual Setting, an all-encompassing guide on how to continue the important work in your community through AHG this year.

AHG hopes that all girls will know that they are chosen and dearly loved by the God of the universe. The 2020-2021 AHG Program Year Theme, Chosen, is an exciting tribute to Girl Members and the AHG Program as we come together to celebrate AHG’s 25th Anniversary!

AHG HOPES THAT ALL GIRLS WILL KNOW THAT THEY ARE CHOSEN AND DEARLY LOVED BY THE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE.

“I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us”. -Romans 8:18, NIV 24 24 || AMERICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE HERITAGE GIRLS GIRLS

“God’s gentle reminders have been immeasurably beneficial during my journey in American Heritage Girls, especially when pursuing the Stars & Stripes Award. When I felt discouraged and did not believe I would accomplish everything required in the allotted time, God would whisper in my ear and tell me to just believe in Him.”

STARS & STRIPES AWARD FACTS AND FIGURES

FUTURE PLANS: I plan on attending University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. I will study either Catholic Theology or Elementary Education. What is your favorite thing about being involved in AHG? My favorite thing about AHG was developing valuable life skills while being surrounded by other girls and women who shared my love for God. What is your favorite Bible verse? Why is this one important to you? My favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:18: “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us”. It helps me to remember that enduring struggles on Earth could lead to glory in heaven. What did you find most rewarding about your Stars & Stripes Award process? I have found the skills I learned along the way to be the most rewarding part of the process. I had many challenges during the award process, but those led to better time management, improved communication, and refined leadership skills. Any advice you would like to share with potential candidates? I was living in Germany when I went through the Stars & Stripes Award process, so no matter where you live or what your circumstance is, you can do it too!

ALUMNASPOTLIGHT

Since 1995, the Mission of American Heritage Girls has been to build women of integrity. While the AHG Program targets those in girlhood, the sincerity and faith-filled spirit that is nurtured and grown through AHG continues as girls develop and mature into women.

MEET ELIZABETH HARRIS Servant leader. Dedicated student. Faithful Daughter of the King.

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” –Romans 5:3-5, NIV 26 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

For AHG Alumna and Stars & Stripes Award Recipient Elizabeth Harris, dinghy sailing is an exciting combination of detailed, skillful planning and the unpredictable nature of God’s creation. With nothing but a life jacket, a small sail boat, and the power of the wind and sea, Sarah and her fellow crew members are able to traverse the open waters in what looks to be an expertly-choreographed routine. From the outside, it can look like nothing short of chaos, but for Sarah, it’s the perfect example of trust in God and the natural ability to lead. She has AHG to thank for a solid foundation of faith and leadership training. “The leadership skills I learned in AHG are invaluable to me. I learned how to develop a plan, follow it, and instruct others. I also learned improvisation, because sometimes, events do not go according to plan.” Today, Elizabeth sharpens those foundational leadership skills learned through AHG as a midshipman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, NY. “AHG definitely helped me achieve my goal of attending a service academy. In the span of a lifetime, participation in AHG is a rather shortterm event, but the principles learned will be used for a lifetime,” said Elizabeth. Like so many American Heritage Girls, Elizabeth joined the AHG Program at the recommendation of a friend. She joined MI3130, chartered by the Bristol Road Church of Christ, during her eighth grade year as a Pioneer. Over four years in the program, Elizabeth earned badges, completed Level Awards, and even went on to earn the Stars & Stripes Award, a first for any girl in her Troop.

Thanks to her time in AHG, Elizabeth was able to strengthen her faith and solidify her identity in Christ throughout her teenage years. It’s most evident what a profound impact the Christ-centered nature of the program had on Elizabeth when asked to share her favorite earned badge. Her answer? “The Daughter of a King Badge. I thought it was a very heartfelt badge that really allowed me to explore my relationship with Jesus as his daughter. I realized how special I am to Him,” said Elizabeth. She attributes AHG with her ability to integrate God into every facet of her life today. In addition to the leadership and faith emphases of the AHG Program, Elizabeth remembers her time in the outdoors with her AHG Troop fondly. She and her fellow American Heritage Girls learned to expect the unexpected, and revel in the joy that comes with surprise. “I loved camping a lot. The weather almost always turned bad, but that made the time more fun,” said Elizabeth. Today, Elizabeth’s love for God’s creation and the great outdoors lives on. During the semester, you can find her navigating the waters surrounding Long Island, and developing her skills as a sailor as a member of the Varsity Intercollegiate Dinghy Sailing Team.

Elizabeth is set to graduate from the Merchant Marine Academy in 2022 and plans to commission as a Naval Officer. She aspires to become a Naval Aviator, a career requiring great confidence, determination, and resilience—abilities Elizabeth most certainly harbors, thanks to her formative years as an American Heritage Girl.

Pets: A cute cat named Winkster

Elizabeth’s words for girls in the AHG Program today? “God has a plan for your life, and it may not be what you expect. God places good desires in your heart for a reason, but He may lead you to accomplish them in a way different than what you planned. But that’s okay! He might even change your desires. I’ve learned that His plan is always better, and I’m more joyful for it. His way is not for the faint of heart, because your relationship with him will be tested and there are times that you will be “alone” (but not really, because He’s always there). Since I’ve been on my own these past few years [at USMMA], it has been the best years of my life, and the hardest. But I keep following God, and I would not change a thing.”

HIGHIMPACT INSIGHT ADVICE FROM DEDICATED HIGH IMPACT VOLUNTEERS

Virginia Thompson is the Vice Coordinator and Tenderheart Unit Leader for MI0711 and the Leadership Development Coordinator for the Detroit Area. She has served AHG in several capacities and especially loves outdoor adventures with girls of all ages.

CHOSEN FOR THE “NEW NORMAL” In a moment, Esther was swept away into an unfamiliar, isolated, luxurious new life. Later, she was surprised to learn that she had, in fact, been chosen by God to serve His purpose for the nation of Israel. We too were swept away this year, and while our “new normal” may not be luxurious, it does feel unfamiliar and isolated. Yet we know that each of us has been chosen to do our part for our girls. Are we up to the task? Besides being resourceful and perseverant, we have many resources to call upon as we serve our girls in the 2020-2021 Program Year. The last two AHG Program Year Themes were “Connections” and “Chrysalis.” Drawing from the past and leaning on these two concepts can help as we plan and prioritize Troop activities this Chosen year! Whether your Troop is able to meet in-person fully, in a limited capacity, or can’t gather together at all, keeping those connections should be a priority. The Jump is available to all Troops to facilitate safe intra- and inter-Troop communications. Be resourceful, be compassionate, and don’t just wait for “someday” when everything is better! AHG can still be a chrysalis where girls and their families feel safe and able to develop! Your Troop can give girls time and guidance to come to terms with all that’s happening in the world right now. You have the ability, flexibility, and resources to create a sense of normalcy that can serve as a steady constant in your girls’ lives. Together you can complete new badge requirements in an online meeting, participate in an outdoor, sociallydistanced event—or even host a “regular,” masked meeting if that’s possible in your area per Charter Organization, local, and state guidelines. Continuing the influential work God has in store for your community through AHG might look different this year, but it’s as important as ever before! Knowing many Troops will not be able to meet in-person for the time being, AHG has developed (and continues to update!) lots of virtual setting-friendly programs and resources to equip volunteers to adjust their plans and lead confidently. Think of these resources as arrows in your quiver as you plan your year. Have all the families in your Troop checked out the special AHG episode of Adventures in Odyssey yet? Still looking for ideas for your Troop’s project for National Day of Service, happening this

September? Don’t feel you have to do everything, but know there is program support being sent your way for this special time. When it comes to the nitty-gritty of planning and executing online Troop or Unit meetings, be sure you’ve looked at the resources being offered by AHG on a national scale. They will aid in creating a plan that’s tailor-made for the girls in your Troop. Girls are still able to earn badges, patches, and awards in a virtual setting. In fact, many of the AHG Program Initiatives launching throughout the Program Year will give girls the opportunity to fulfill badge requirements in all Six Frontiers. Recently, my Troop’s Explorer Unit Leader dropped off the materials for duct tape and gallon bag sit-upons to each of our Troop households for a virtual, hands-on activity. The girls loved taping and chatting away, making the virtual event feel almost as though they were together in the same room! Girls in your Troop may also benefit from earning the new AHG Faith Awards through facilitated online Troop instruction, with the opportunity to dig deeper into their faith tradition with their families at home. You may also have local online resources at your disposal with just a little researching. Our local nature center had short engaging videos that enabled us to take a virtual field trip together. Don’t underestimate the power of keeping things close to home! Engaging with local organizations for activities and service projects as a Troop can have a tremendous impact on AHG recognition and Troop growth in your local community. The new AHG Girl Handbooks will undoubtedly inspire girls to try a new badge either on their own or in a small group. And don’t think traditional examples of girl leadership can’t happen in your new virtual setting! Older girls can flex their leadership muscles by leading songs and games, performing flag ceremonies adjusted for a virtual environment, and even arranging badge requirement activities like an online ballet class for the younger girls in the Troop. Giving girls in your Troop the opportunity to make decisions and take the lead results in higher retention and excitement for this Program Year. Your Troop’s success this difficult year may make all the difference in ministering to families in your area for years to come! AHG LAUNCHES ROBUST, INTERDENOMINATIONAL FAITH AWARDS PROGRAM The AHG Program is rooted in Christ. The AHG Faith Awards Program was created in an effort to provide American Heritage Girls the opportunity to grow in faith and become lifelong Christfollowers. The AHG Faith Awards are one of the main avenues by which faith is integrated into the AHG Program. The B.Y. Faith Awards Program offers girls the ability to customize a Faith Awards Program to their denominational beliefs, while the Catholic Faith Awards Program provides Roman Catholic girls with a curriculum that aligns with their faith tradition. The AHG Catholic Faith Awards, developed in collaboration with the AHG National Catholic Committee (NCC), received a Nihil Obstat, a diocesan-granted Church approval on the curriculum content. STAFFSCOOP LAURIE CULLEN

Culture & Care Specialist How long have you been working at AHG? I’ve been involved since AHG’s inception, right alongside Patti, yet an actual ‘employee’ for 19 ½ years. (The roles have changed and the time has flown.)

“ ʽFor I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” - Jeremiah 29:11, NIV

What do you do in your position? I coordinate ‘care’ for AHG Staff and Members as well as, help to maintain and support the AHG culture. AHG’s tagline of ‘Faith, Service, Fun’ plays out in most events and happenings that I am excited to coordinate and offer the Staff. Not only do I help to celebrate and recognize Staff for birthdays and other life events, there are times when support and care is needed for people in sad ‘life events’! What’s your favorite part of working at AHG? I love the people at AHG and the girls we serve! I am very relational and love getting to know people! I love to observe how God wired them and how they work and communicate, all in different ways. I find it interesting to see how they view themselves and what they think they can do and accomplish…and then watch God stretch them and grow them as He always does. Walking through life with the people that God has brought to AHG has given me great joy! And as God does, He taught me so much through them! The girls we serve through the AHG Program are the very reason this ministry exists! I wish I could meet them all! Their faces are on the walls of our office to inspire and remind the Staff of the importance of what we do–Kingdom work for girls. Knowing how much thought, love, and discernment goes into creating programs and curriculum and products, etc., assures me that Girl Members in AHG are receiving a Christ-centered leadership development program that will help them grow up to be the women God designed them to be. What is your favorite part about visiting or being involved in a Troop? I was involved with AHG’s very first Troop and it was so much fun! Completing badge work, going on field trips, hanging out with the girls and watching them learn and grow was such a blessing! I still enjoy visiting Troops to see the girls and observe how far AHG has come in the structure of the ‘Troop’ and the breadth of learning opportunities for every girl! Anything else you’d like to add? Some common sayings I use for myself and to encourage others: “It is what it is!”, “Let go and let God!”, and “God’s timing and plans are perfect!”
