For those not keeping score, one afer another the big truck makers opted not to travel to Louisville last month for the biggest annual truck show in the U.S. They begged off citing the large expense associated with their floor show extravaganzas and also have said that an every-other-year schedule, more in line with the big show in Europe, would be better suited to their needs.
For the American Trucker staf, MATS this year gave us more hands-on time with the latest gear and gadgets
And most journalists would agree: There’s no need to allocate big blocks of press event time if there’s no news, if the truck companies are just going to talk about some minor feature additions to last year’s models. Unoficially, OEM execs will admit that they just don’t sell trucks at MATS like they do at IAA, the Hannover, Germany, event. At Hannover, fleet execs from around the world show up with blank bank drafs and want to be wined and dined and make deals. Louisville is about drivers, after all. And plenty of truck and trailer dealers filled in the gap, happy to show their

Trucking tribes gather for busy MATS 2016 By SEAN KILCARR, editor-at-large DIFFERENCES ABOUNDED at the 45th annual Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) compared to previous years, notably the absence of all the major truck manufacturers on the exhibit hall floor along with other key OEMs, such as Cummins Engine. Yet attendance remained brisk, with some 74,937 perusing the aisles of the Kentucky Exposition Center just outside of Louisville, KY. Show management boasted that MATS notched its fourth-highest ever exhibitor total—some 1,102—despite the absence of the major truck makers, which compares to the 1,064 that exhibited in 2015. The big news this year centered on the continued development of the autonomous truck. A panel discussion at the Fleet Forum held in con-
junction with MATS explored the rapid deployment of connected truck systems, and component suppliers such as Wabco detailed how existing safety technologies (lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and even air disc brakes) provide the platform upon which self-driving trucks can develop. MATS 2016 also witnessed public outreach efforts to attract military veterans to trucking careers. A visit by Acting Secretary of the Army Patrick Murphy underscored the high importance being given to such eforts.
On the whole, MATS remained just as busy in 2016 as in previous years, and you’ll see why as you dive into our coverage of trucking’s annual “gathering of the tribes.”

Safety tech still evolving JON MORRISON, WABCO PRESIDENT for the Americas, believes that autonomous trucks won’t become a reality until there is widespread adoption of the various advanced safety technologies now already in the marketplace. “Automation is certainly a fantastic vision, but don’t forget the technologies needed to make it work are available today and need to be more accepted by the industry,” he explained to American Trucker in an interview at Mid-America. He noted that safety systems such as full stability control are only spec’d on 35% of today’s Class 8 builds, with collision mitigation technology on only 15%. The same goes for air disc brakes (ADBs), which Morrison considers to be the “bedrock platform” upon which full-autonomous trucks will rest. ADBs are spec’d on only 15% of U.S. Class 8 trucks today, with a little less than that percentage spec’d on trail-
ers. That is up significantly from the 5% just five years ago but still growing very slowly. He believes that will only increase to 20% over the next two to three years. Morrison said a “tremendous amount of evolution” in terms of better integration and lower cost needs to be achieved with the “disparate technological pieces” that will guide autonomous trucks. That being said, he thinks at least semi-auto no mous trucks—ones capable of actively controlling themselves in emergency situations—should arrive some time in the mid-2020s. One reason Morrison maintains that confidence is the increase in safety system integration, which is helping to lower the cost of such technology. He used as an example the integration of his company’s OnLane lane departure warning system with the SmartDrive video-based driver per-

SuperRigs to host vets, new truckers TO HELP ATTRACT more military veterans to trucking industry careers, Shell Lubricant’s annual SuperRigs competition will host a gathering of veterans in partnership with job recruitment service FastPort at its June 9-11 event in Joplin, MO, this year. “The military is a perfect fit for our industry,” Dave Waterman, North American marketing manager for the Shell Rotella engine oil brand, explained to American Trucker during a press event at the Mid-America Trucking Show. “We want [veterans] to talk to people who put their heart and soul into this business,” he stressed. “Military veterans know about hard work and discipline. This competition [SuperRigs] shows them what they could potentially achieve applying those traits in our industry.” Patrick Murphy, Acting Secretary of the Army, was on hand to emphasize the need to provide a transition for military personnel leaving the service and rejoining the civilian workforce.

“We have over 1 million servicemen and women who all have high school degrees or their GED (General Equivalency Degree) and who are all drug-tested and have character,” Murphy added. “They need an opportunity, a challenge, when they leave military life. They know how to take the initiative and know what it means to perform work with integrity. We need public/private partnerships like this to connect our transitioning soldiers, sailors and airmen to jobs as truck drivers, technicians, and other positions.”

Single toll solution WITH TOLLS IN MANY STATES, overthe-road trucking operations can get lost in the maze of fees, regulations, and the fight with tolling authorities to have improperly applied tolls revoked. Bestpass is seeking to end all that with its new Complete solution. The transponder replaces all other transponders and is compatible with every tolling authority—40 in all—to make the task of recording and paying tolls easier. The company also launched its Freedom Service at Mid-America. The Freedom Service will process incorrectly applied video and violation toll statements and submit corrections on behalf of its customers.
“If you do the math, you realize trucks pay a tremendous burden in tolls,” said John Andrews, president and CEO of Bestpass, adding that MAP-21 mandated single transponder capability and Bestpass has done that before anyone else. “Bestpass has done this without spending any taxpayer dollars or raising a single toll.” Bestpass Complete includes all the hardware and services needed for a small monthly fee, and all billing is handled in a single invoice. The service will provide coverage to include about 95% of U.S. roads, missing mostly only HOV lanes where trucks are not allowed. Optional weigh station bypass compatibility is available. If the current transponder of fleets already using
Bestpass is doing the job properly, then they can keep it. Andrews said that if fleets travel through diferent tolling authorities and have multiple devices in the cab, then the Bestpass Complete can be used to replace all of those. The Freedom Service “is like gap insurance,” Andrews explained. “If you have a bridge that we don’t cover, you can use this.” Bestpass customers can also submit their toll bills from outside of the network to have them paid and included in their monthly Bestpass bill. Customers will receive free standard shipping in the continental U.S., free protective transponder cases, and enhanced implementation services, including labeling each transponder before shipping according to customer specs. —BRIAN STRAIGHT

A plug-in ELD solution app, they really liked…that it walks you through the whole process.”
TO HELP FLEETS COMPLY with new federal electronic logging device mandates, Rand McNally has introduced a plug-and-play device to handle the recording of drive time. The announcement was made at the Mid-America Trucking Show. The ELD 50 is designed to provide an easy-to-install, low-cost device for fleets and drivers. It works with any Android tablet, Android smartphone and Rand McNally’s navigation tablets, and provides hours of service and driver vehicle inspection report compliance. It is just 3 ¼ in. long and plugs into a truck’s diagnostic port. The company also has a dedicated website set up to answer customer questions on the ELD rule. It is accessible at www.randmcnally.com/eld. The ELD 50 includes a free app that can be downloaded from the Google Play store. The app gives fleet managers access to a back end web portal that allows them to view truck locations and add and manage additional drivers when a truck is shared. The cloud-based system holds data for six months per the federal rule and allows drivers to email log information to roadside inspectors.

There is also a bonus feature for drivers using the app. Ten gauges can be displayed, including coolant temperature, battery voltage, oil pressure, fuel economy, and engine and truck speed. “To make sure this data is available to the driver, we’ve just put it in the app,” Kodavarti said. He said the design was influenced by drivers through testing. “We’ve had it out to multiple drivers and multiple fleets and one of the things we’ve learned is the ease of installation,” he explained. “Also, on our

WASHINGTON UPDATE
What is coercion? By Larry Kahaner, contributor THE FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIER SAFETY ADMINISTRATION has set up procedures to protect truck drivers from being coerced by their company or at the dock, but the safety-focused rule means little if truckers don’t understand how to apply it.
Jones recommends the following filing procedure:
Step 1: Is it coercion? The driver must first decide if his or her situation is actually coercion under the new regulations. “There has to be a threat or an actual act against a driver,” Jones says. “The threat or the actual act can be things like withholding business, negative ramifications for your employment, threatening to fire somebody, and threatening to punish somebody for refusing to violate the rules.”
Step 2: Speak up The driver has to say something. “Before it becomes coercion, the driver has a duty to tell them ‘I can’t do this because I’m going to be in violation of the rules.’ The driver has to tell them generally which rules. He doesn’t have to say ‘section three-point-whatever,’ but he has to say, for instance, ‘I cannot take this run because I would violate hours of service.’ The reason why

“The onus is on the driver,” says Jordan Jones, attorney and executive director of Truck Accidents Attorneys Roundtable, commenting on steps that drivers must take to file a coercion complaint under the new regulations that went into efect earlier this year. “The reporting requirements are actually pretty stringent.”
[FMCSA] did that is because shippers and receivers, for example, may not necessarily know if a driver is out of hours. The onus is on the driver to speak up.” Important: Jones says that if the carrier, shipper, etc., backs of, then coercion did not occur.
Step 3: Keep a record Document the incident. Drivers should write down what occurred. They should keep texts, emails, and document phone calls or conversations.
Step 4: Act File a complaint. “Drivers can either send it to the FMCSA field ofice in the state where the driver is employed or file online at the FMCSA’s National Consumer Complaint Database,” says Jones. There are three complaint areas: consumer, driver and industry. Drivers should follow the prompts. Drivers have 90 days to report alleged coercion. “FMCSA has a duty to investigate. Once it investigates, it has to notify the driver what the results are. It has to notify the driver in writing.”
Step 5: Protect yourself File a complaint with OSHA under the Surface Transportation Assistance Act. (Optional but recommended). “When you look at the actual penalties under the new coercion rule, the only real penalty is that the agency can fine the company. The maximum is $16,000, but that doesn’t benefit the driver who was fired. He’s out of a job,” Jones says. The Dept. of Labor also has separate whistleblower protection programs. Jones has a major criticism of the new regulation. “I think it may discourage some people from speaking up. If they speak out against their trucking company and it’s made public, and then he gets fired, he’s got to look for a new job.” The fact that the driver filed a complaint may dissuade others from hiring him. “He may be a guy who’s living paycheck-to-paycheck like everybody else. That’s what I personally don’t like about the new regulation, the public aspect of the complaint. It’s not a perfect rule, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

Questions for
SMARTWAY by Kevin Rohlwing, contributing editor kevinrohlwing@comcast.net
WITH THE CREATION OF SMARTWAY and the implementation of Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA), the rules have changed for commercial vehicle maintenance. SmartWay opened the doors for countless devices and gadgets that claim to improve fuel efficiency and/or reduce
SmartWay tires, it’s obvious that either the bar is set too low, or the lack of policing makes it too easy to get creative with the test results. The goal is not to criticize SmartWay because any improvement in fuel efficiency or reduced emissions is
“The law of unintended consequences is having an impact on wheel covers.” emissions. Like any initiative that originates in the halls of government, there are always some positives and some unintended consequences. Tires and wheels are a natural target for SmartWay because they are major contributors to drag and fuel ineficiency. In some cases, tire manufacturers have used technology to create a genuinely efficient truck tire; in others, they rely on tactics like reducing tread depth to achieve the SmartWay designation. Given the absurd number of

good for the industry and the planet. However, the quest for the SmartWay designation has led to some products where the efects are either questionable or unknown. One area where this is becoming an issue is the wheel cover. The theory is that by covering the open end of the wheel, drag will be reduced and efficiency improved. To the outside observer or SmartWay enthusiast, this makes perfect sense and would appear to be a no-brainer for a fleet looking to improve aerodynamics.
But the law of unintended consequences is starting to have an impact on wheel covers. The most serious case is probably the inability to visually inspect the wheels and fasteners. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is aware of the situation and is searching for a solution. Enforcement oficials are not going to remove a wheel cover during a roadside inspection. And the inability to visually inspect the wheel end for missing hardware, cracks or other damage presents a serious problem for those oficials. There are no guidelines for oficers to follow when wheel covers are present, but that could change in the near future. Fleets that use wheel covers should start thinking about how they will react if CVSA establishes new guidelines for wheel end inspections. Does the product provide a way for oficers to visually inspect the wheel? If not, are there any planned modifications that will allow for such an inspection? Changes are coming because the inability to inspect the wheel end is a problem that needs to be solved.

THE BUSINESS OF TRUCKING
CALLING THE WINNING PLAY Success is achieved by following the basics by Tim Brady, business editor GREAT FOOTBALL COACHES KNOW that when their team is behind and the opposing team has first and goal on the 10-yard line, they need to turn the game around—and to do that, they must return to the basics.
16 AMERICAN TRUCKER / MAY 2016
It’s the same for owners of trucking businesses. Remember the days when you first started your business? Well, you need to return to the basics of how to succeed in business. Make sure you have a business plan in place; it’s essential to the success of your company. Review how your business has performed. What has worked? What has not worked? What has caused problems? Put together a strategic game plan for your company for both the short and long term. Following is a step-by-step guide to help you get started:
• What will you need in equipment to achieve your goals? • How many people will it take to get the job done to reach your objectives? • How much cash flow and cash reserves will you need to acquire to run the equipment and pay the personnel on your team for the next six months? One year? Two years? How many dollars will you need to set aside in savings for your company to be capitalized (grow) in the next three to five years? • Who are your customers? How stable are their businesses? What is their growth potential, or do they antici-

pate downsizing? How does this afect your goals? Where can you find new customers?
Having a strategic business plan in place is essential to the success of your company.
• What should your hauling rates be in order to generate the cash flow needed to pay all expenses and meet growth targets? • What needs to be adjusted, cut, increased, or changed to make this plan work? • Go back and review the plan once completed to make sure you didn’t miss anything. Revisit and update the plan—adjust, cut, increase, or change—as warranted. Of course, you must take the plan from the locker room to the playing field. A plan is just a plan until it is put into action, then it becomes a result. Your playbook has now been laid out, and this becomes your road atlas. Use it to navigate through the financial and business minefield you will face. As you start implementing your plan, here are 10 points to keep in mind:
1 Keep a close eye on what’s happening within your hauling niche. Talk with your customers. Find out what they are projecting in the near future, not just for their company but also for their industry.
2 Study the industries to which your customers sell or from which they buy. The more you know about what’s happening in their specific industry, the better prepared you will be for any changes.
3 Track the shipments traveling in your hauling lanes that are similar to those hauled by your trucks. Know your lanes and the freight hauled in them better than the back of your hand. 4 Follow the trends in the oil and fuel markets. This allows you to anticipate fluctuations in your fuel cost and
adjust your hauling rates accordingly. Be ahead of the curve.
5 Keep a close eye on costs. Reducing or eliminating them is your objective. Make sure that reduction or elimination of an expense doesn’t diminish your ability to provide top-of-theline service.
6 Think customer service. The best way to increase your rates without losing a customer is to first establish the highest level of customer service possible.
7 Set the bar when it comes to building customer loyalty and customer service. Customers don’t just do business with a company. They deal with the people representing the company. Make it dificult for the competition to match your customer service.
8 Cut expenses before increasing hauling rates. Be able to prove to your customers that you did everything possible to avoid increasing your rates. 9 Don’t wait until your costs have significantly increased before raising your hauling rates. Help your customers by making small, incremental increases. If your costs have increased by 5%, then it’s time to consider increasing rates. Avoid ‘sticker shock’ for your customers; they’ll appreciate it. 10 Keep everyone in your operation in the loop—drivers, dispatch, sales.

Communication is the key to implementing and maintaining a plan. Also include your customers’ key people— the folks on the dock, in shipping and receiving, and the front office. Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers and email addresses with alternate contacts. Use them when needed. With the economic outlook for the next year or two a real guessing game, running a trucking company is going to be challenging. It’s going to require a dedication to detail. The good news? America runs on trucks, and small motor carriers (those with fewer than 35 power units) haul a vast majority of the freight. Over 80% of American manufacturers are small businesses with fewer than 25 employees, and these small-business owners are going to be facing the same dilemmas and problems as the small trucking company owner. The small-business owners are going to need a hauler who understands what they’re dealing with, and who better than the owner of another small business? That’s you. If you navigate this financial and business game by picking your way carefully with a defined plan, you’ll reach the top of your game. And when the score starts adding up in your favor, you’ll realize success. That’s the plan.

Investing in top quality equipment attracts drivers and customers “Creating value for our customers and our drivers is a winning formula that results in growth and overall reduced costs,” says Matt Handte, executive vice president of Tribe Transportation. “For us, it’s a simple formula: Quality equipment attracts drivers and reliability attracts customers. “We go beyond what many refrigerated carriers typically do by investing in greater equipment capacity and the latest in technology, which is, for us, key to attracting new business and keeping drivers,” Handte adds. Gainesville, GA-based Tribe Transportation is one of the fastest grow-

ing Native American women-owned carriers in North America. Founded as a 3PL in 2005, the company started its own fleet, Tribe Express, in 2010. According to Handte, part of Tribe’s strategy is long-term supplier relationships. For example, Tribe is partnering with Great Dane Trailers to add an additional 135 trailers to its fleet of 400 Everest reefers this year. “All of our first-generation Great Danes are still on the road producing revenue and working flawlessly,” Handte says, “and we expect our 2016 model-year trailers to exhibit the same durability and low cost of operation.” Tribe is also using Thermo King’s TracKing telematics to set and monitor cargo temperatures and track locations and door openings. “TracKing sends instant notifications of critical events, including unit setting errors and unauthorized movement or access, which is increasingly important under the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act,” Handte explains.
The carrier has also continued to add fuel-saving side skirts and tails to its trailers and specs its Kenworth T680s with Paccar MX-13 engines and Eaton automated transmissions. “With our tractor specs and trailer aerodynamic features, we’re seeing overall fuel economy jump from the mid-6.0 to the 7.8–8.3 mpg range,” Handte reports. New equipment, competitive pay, a range of benefits, and routes that cater to individual driver needs are also having an impact at Tribe. “In the first three years of employment, our driver turnover rate is about 35%, and our return ratio of drivers who leave and come back to work for us is 92%,” he states. “For drivers who invest more than three years with us, our retention rate is among the best in the business. “Our success is driven by our people providing value and reliability to our customers,” Handte says.

SMART TRUCKS NEED SMART TRUCKERS Autonomous trucks will change the job by Kevin Jones, editor
Volvo Group
THE DRIVER SHORTAGE is driving a serious look at self-driving trucks, just not in the way many people assume. Despite persistent rumors of the demise of the long-haul truck driver in the coming age of automated transport, that time is decades away— and many of the advances between now and then will, in fact, make driving a much more desirable job.
20 AMERICAN TRUCKER / MAY 2016
Paradoxically, “the human factor” will be a critical element as trucks become smarter and smarter. “We’ve done a lot of end-user research to come to the conclusion that autonomous vehicles will enable recruiting drivers,” says Sandeep Kar, global vice president for Frost & Sullivan and an expert in heavy truck systems and technologies. “[Trucking] will need to entice young drivers by giving them a work environment that is less stressful, less disenfranchised—that enables them to connect to the world outside. They
want to be connected to their friends, to Facebook or whatever it is: You have to give them some time during their work cycle where they relax, sit back, and watch their iPad.” Currently, just 11% of the truck driver workforce in the U.S. is under 30 years old, Kar notes. “This is a huge red flag,” he says. “If we want to bet on the U.S. economy, we have to attract young drivers. On the other side, the health, wellness, and well-being of the aging drivers is becoming a major driver retention factor.”

As a result, truck makers are more focused than ever on “inside the cab,” based on the growth of investment on things like seating systems, visibility, steering, and the driver interface. “It’s not by accident that we’re here to talk about automated mobility. It is by design; it is by reality,” Kar says. Autonomous truck technology, he explains, will enhance driver performance, improve fuel efficiency, improve safety, and improve compliance.
The catch, however, is that fleets will question the need to invest in the suite of technologies needed to achieve Level 3 autonomy (a truck that has the ability to take over the driving in certain situations, typically long highway stretches) if they also still have to pay drivers. But the substantial benefits to the supply chain and trucking operations that connectivity and big data will provide should mitigate those concerns. Level 4 automation means no driver in the cab, and it’s “way out there,” Kar
notes, pointing to a Frost & Sullivan market analysis that projects none of these trucks will be on the roads of North America in 2025 and just 300 or so in 2035. And the projection for Level 3 technology is only 3,160 trucks, although that total surges to almost 41,000 by 2035. But the substantial market growth comes with Level 2 autonomy, or combined technologies that relieve the driver of control of each, which will hit 109,000 trucks in North America in 2025 and more than 200,000 in 2035. PIECE BY PIECE
Many truck operators might not realize it, but from antilock brakes to the latest efforts toward so-called fully autonomous trucks, they’re looking at stepping stones on the same path. Commercial truck safety technologies today share a lot of DNA and in the active sense, center on diferent levels and periods of computer control.
How will these technologies change trucking and improve roadway safety? That depends. Executives at two top truck safety technology firms say it will depend on the level of fleet investment in advanced safety systems. And while the autonomous or self-driving truck concept receives plenty of attention, it’s truck safety that has truly advanced—piece by piece—and more is in store. The latest safety technologies being added to trucks “are the stepping stones—these are sensors that can determine the environment external to the truck—and that’s what you’ll need for more highly automated vehicles,” says Alan Korn, director of advanced brake system integration at Meritor Wabco. Korn is quick to cut of the use of the word autonomous when it comes to commercial trucks. “To me, autonomous means a vehicle without a
steering wheel or any pedals whatsoever,” he explains. “There’s no human intervention other than telling the system where you want to go, and it takes you there. So I like to say highly automated vehicles” when describing how safety systems will advance in real-world terms over the next decade. “A highly automated vehicle will be able to take control independent of the driver in certain circumstances, and it can automatically control longitudinally, which is the speed of the vehicle, and laterally, which is the steering,” Korn explains. Initially, when future safety systems assume that control, it’s likely going to require low-risk circumstances such as a clear day on the highway with minimal congestion, he says. “The driver’s not going to be in the sleeper berth; he’s going to be in the driver’s seat,” notes Korn. “The driver will be there mainly for backup, almost like on a plane. They have autopilot now on all planes, but you still have pilots there so they can quickly take control or handle some of the more complicated processes like landing and taking of. “Similarly, when it’s safe, the truck driver will be able to cede control to the system itself,” Korn continues. “I think you’re going to start to see that on heavy trucks, maybe not in 2016 but in the mid-2020s.” Fred Andersky, director of customer solutions for Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems’ Controls Group, says the first mandate of antilock braking systems (ABS) for trucks and trailers in the 1990s was a key moment on the road to advanced safety systems. “That gave us two things: a brain and an input,” he says. “Now, we had an ECU (electronic control unit) that could accept information from sensors—wheel speed

DTNA engineer Antonio Edgar keeps an eye on the autonomous technology featured in the Freightliner Inspiration demonstration vehicle.
sensors in this case—and when we determined that a wheel was going to lock up, we could release the brake,” Andersky continues. From that point, truck safety technology has become more sophisticated by adding different types of sensors and doing more with the information they provide. “When we think about where things will go in the future, we focus on four I’s: information, intelligence, intervention and insight,” he says, explaining the thinking at Bendix. Sensors add information; intelligence is determining an appropriate response to sensor input. Intervention is safety system actions taken, such as automatically changing the truck’s speed or direction to mitigate a potential problem, and insight is analysis of safety data gathered to show trends and action items for the fleet. Of the four I’s, “when we look at how things are going to grow, what really becomes important is the information aspect,” Andersky says. “More information into the system continues to allow us to do more things.” More sensors on top of ABS—e.g., a lateral acceleration sensor, yaw rate sensor, and steering angle sen-
sor—brought safety technology to what’s known as full electronic stability control, or ESC. The National Highway and Trafic Safety Administration has mandated ESC systems for most new heavy trucks starting in August 2017 and additional commercial vehicles in following years. TEAMWORK
Putting these systems together is already feasible, but finding suitable applications for on-highway trucking will require some operational adjustments, as well as regulatory clearance. Where does the technology go from here? “Truck platooning is really the first step in the AV process,” suggests Frost & Sullivan’s Kar, referring to a system that allows a lead truck to virtually take control of a following truck’s acceleration and braking so the pair can travel close together at highway speeds. “Drivers could take two-hour turns driving at the head of a platoon then switch with another driver. It allows them to disengage with driving for set periods, and that would probably help attract more entrants to the profession. That’s why we see a possible solid return for this technology.”

Earlier this year, Daimler Trucks put on a public demonstration of the company’s latest connectivity technologies with a live truck platoon running down the A52 Autobahn in daytime trafic. An extension of Daimler Trucks’ Highway Pilot semi-autonomous driving system, Highway Pilot Connect allowed three tractor-trailers to couple into a platoon and switch control of the two following trucks to autonomous steering, acceleration and braking.
Daimler
The demonstration included having a car cut between the two semi-autonomous trucks, which reacted by lengthening the following distance from 15 meters to 50 meters until the car lef that lane. At that point, the trucks adjusted following distances to 15 meters again without any input from the drivers. Daimler Trucks North America unveiled its Inspiration autonomous truck a year ago in Nevada, and the state is actively encouraging AV testing.
And Silicon Valley-based Peloton
“Truck platooning is really the first step in the AV process. Drivers could take turns driving at the head of a platoon then switch.” — Sandeep Kar, global vice president, Frost & Sullivan
Technology already has nearly 20,000 highway platoon test miles in the books. The challenge has been to find the sweet spot between the Peloton system’s capabilities and what drivers are comfortable with, explains CEO Josh Switkes. Based on the research results thus far, that’s about 40 f., or more than four times what the technology is capable of. But when the trailing truck is only 10 ft. away from the lead truck, the driver doesn’t see the road and is uncomfortable, Switkes explains. At 20 f. “it starts to get comfortable,” and by 40 f. drivers report that it wasn’t
as close as they expected, he adds.
“A lot of people hear 40 f. and they think you’re staring at a wall, but if you ride in the trucks, you’ll see it’s not like that,” Switkes says. “There is a truck in front, but you can see of to the side just fine.” The company is now moving toward production of its system. “I think the fleet and industry interest has gone better than I originally expected. People always talk about trucking as being a slow-moving industry, but what we’ve seen is it can move quickly if it is interested in something,” Switkes explains.

Optimized Driver Time
As to building a “critical mass” where there are enough Peloton-equipped trucks on the road so drivers readily will be able to find platooning partners, Switkes suggests it will happen quickly in densely traveled truck corridors. He also notes that a lot of fleets operate on a regional basis, and that’s where the early opportunities will be. Similarly, Switkes anticipates fleets will learn to dispatch their trucks in a way to assure more opportunities to platoon. “Fleets today have no incentive to send trucks out at the same time. A lot of them could, with trucks going from hub to hub—but they actually try to keep them apart,” Switkes says. “Certain fleets have external reasons for their dispatch timing, but I think most fleets choose an arbitrary timing, coordinate services and try to follow that. But there ofen is no real need for that sort of schedule.” PAYBACK
Long-haul trucking is the holy grail for any vehicle technology. Therefore, the market is there to justify the R&D investments truck makers and their suppliers are making in these
advanced systems, Kar explains. Kar puts the current cost of a suite of the technologies at $30,000, but that cost will go down over the next 10 years with wider adoption. However, the cost of the development of proprietary algorithms and the IT needed to support and secure them will become greater. How can self-driving trucks save fleets money while potentially opening up new avenues of profit? Answering those questions may be the key to making autonomous vehicles a reality in the commercial truck world. “It’s a challenge to capture the true return on investment ofered by autonomous trucks,” says Michael Rofman, senior manager at consulting and tax advisory firm WeiserMazars LLP.
Rofman thinks the trucking industry can reasonably expect to see autonomous trucks on the road by the year 2035, though the advent of such vehicles won’t lessen the need for drivers. “We’ve had autopilot in airplanes for 25 to 30 years now, but we still have two pilots in the plane,” he says. “So autonomous trucks won’t be completely free from humans.”

But in the opinion of several experts, insurance savings will be the key to making AVs acceptable in trucking. “Insurance is the key and will be watched closely,” says Dan Murray, vice president of research for the American Trucking Research Institute, during a meeting last December on automated trucks. “The economics are huge in this area. So if AV technology ofers a demonstrable safety benefit, the insurance industry will champion it.” The insurance industry will be hesitant, however, if benefits are not quickly realized. Kar ofers his expert overview of “the future truck.” “The future truck is going to be a green truck; it will save fuel and have a smaller environmental footprint,” he says. “The future truck will be a safe truck. It will save the life of the driver and people around it. It will be a connected truck, connected to the world outside, and the world outside will be connected to this truck. “When you add these three together, it’s safe to assume the future truck will be a smart truck. The question that it begs is, are we smart enough to embrace the future?”

How to keep up BY SEAN KILCARR, EDITOR-AT-LARGE TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
Homer Hogg COMPANY
TravelCenters of America, operator of the TA and Petro chain of truck and travel stops OPERATION Some 3,000 technicians spread across 250 North American locations
PROBLEM Keeping maintenance technicians up to date on all the intricacies of today’s commercial trucks, trailers, and related components is a tough enough job. But when you’re talking about providing the latest knowhow for most equipment makes and models to 3,000 technicians spread across 250 locations, that becomes as daunting a task as climbing Mount Everest without oxygen. The trick is how to get that oxygen to the climbers in measured increments without interfering with their journey to the summit. At least that’s the way Homer Hogg looks at it. “We operate 24/7, 365 days a year; we never close,” he says. “We ofer a wide range of services on most trucks and trailers, on everything except internal work on engines, transmissions and rear-ends.” TA’s technicians also perform warranty work for Daimler Trucks North America. “We’ve got a variety of diagnostic tools, codes, repair processes,
28 AMERICAN TRUCKER / MAY 2016
and other information our technicians need to be constantly updated on,” Hogg points out. Yet it’s not all book learning, he stresses, as a good bit of what technicians need to know must be transmitted in a hands-on fashion.
SOLUTION TA/Petro decided to establish three hands-on training centers at key points across the U.S. to serve its farflung technician base: Phoenix, AZ; Nashville, TN; and Lodi, OH. Hogg says those three centers can train 1,500 to 1,700 TA/Petro technicians per year, which does not include the continual web-based training they must complete. “The point of this is to reduce errors so our technicians get the repair right the first time,” he explains. Each of the three training centers comes with its own unique history. The Lodi, OH, location, for example, is actually a former truck dealership purchased by TA/Petro and converted
into a training facility. The Nashville training site, however, came about following the devastating floods of 2010. When TA/Petro started rebuilding that location, it used that “reconstruction opportunity” to add a dedicated one-bay training site. “We even have a full-scale truck located there to provide about as realistic a hands-on environment as you can get,” Hogg points out. Finally, the Phoenix location is a UTI Technical Institute facility within which TA/Petro rents space for its own dedicated technician training program. “We really need that physical handson environment for training because there are just some things you cannot simulate,” Hogg says. “Now, sure, we use simulations for air conditioning and electrical systems laid out on big boards, but you ofen need real trucks in order to experience everything that will need to be done to complete a particular repair. There is just no substitute for that.”

Trailer aerodynamics
A VARIETY OF DEVICES, including side skirts and rear-, nose- and front-mounted solutions, that smooth airflow on trailers are widely adopted for their proven fuel savings. “Generally, the aerodynamic devices that are adopted the most are those that are the most durable and least intrusive to the daily operations of a fleet,” says Brian Fanelli, director of sales at Wabash Composites, a business unit of Wabash National. For their ability to reduce drag and cut fuel consumption, aerodynamic mud flaps are also gaining in popularity. Eco Flaps explains that the design of its splash guard employs molded, aerodynamic channels to reduce wind resistance, moving air and water through the flap surface with minimal drag while reducing road spray. According to the manufacturer, in an SAE J1321 test, the flaps cut fuel consumption by 1.75%. Last October, Eco Flaps adds, a coast-down test demonstrated that adding two Eco Flaps to a skirted trailer improved mpg of the tractor-trailer by another 2%. Fleet Engineers ofers a line of AeroFlap mud flaps in versions for dual and wide-base single tire configu-

rations. The devices are said to decrease drag by letting air flow through the flap and by reducing the vacuum behind the flap to cut spray and vent heat away from brakes. Other trailer aerodynamic products from Fleet Engineers include AeroSaver fiberglass reinforced poly and aluminum trailer side skirts, AeroPan trailer belly panels, and AeroSlipper Quarter Fenders.
the newly revised SAE J1252 Wind Tunnel Test protocol, the company says its nose fairing provides up to a 1.5% fuel economy improvement in tandem trailer applications. Constructed in three sections to simplify installation and repair, the nose fairing can also be used to reduce aerodynamic drag between the cab and trailer.
Wabash National’s DuraPlate AeroSkirt is constructed in three sections for streamlined installation and repair. The DuraPlate AeroSkirt CX mounts to the trailer using a proprietary spring-bracket system. The manufacturer notes that the system provides damage resistance by allowing the skirt to flex inward and outward.
Other trailer aerodynamic devices on the market today include Stemco’s TrailerTail. It is said to streamline airflow at the back of the trailer to reduce the low-pressure vacuum that creates rear drag and decreases fuel eficiency without hindering trailer cargo capacity, loading or unloading.
The company’s Ventix DRS (drag reduction system) utilizes a segmented system design to manage airflow across the underbody of the trailer. The AeroFin XL tail device, which reduces drag behind the trailer, deploys and retracts with swing door operation. It doesn’t require interaction from the driver and doesn’t interfere with loading and unloading. Also available from Wabash is its aerodynamic nose fairing. Based on
Aerofficient offers multiple trailer side fairing models for use on dry vans and refrigerated trailers, including hinged two-panel designs. Ridge Corp. ofers Green Wing aerodynamic trailer side skirts. Utility Trailer provides its USS-120A-4 aerodynamic side skirt. Backed by data from manufacturers as well as from EPA, fleets can choose from a range of trailer aerodynamic devices that ofer proven fuel savings.
