TO BORROW FROM MARK TWAIN , the reports of the demise of the owner-operator have been greatly exaggerated. Well, somewhat, anyway.

It’s not likely a surprise to many American Trucker readers, but The Wall Street Journal recently found it worth reporting: The trucking business is increasingly stacked against small operators while large, well-capitalized fleets are positioned to manage costly regulations and expensive equipment, leverage scale, and scoop up market share.

“A recovering U.S. economy is driving record demand for trucking,” the WSJ piece, by supply chain and logistics writer Loretta Chao, opens. “But many smaller operators, who make up the vast majority of the roughly 470,000 for-hire fleets on the road today, say they’re missing out on the boom.”

Chao throws in some big-picture numbers and trucking’s corresponding growth during the economic recovery. She also notes rising operating costs, including the price of regulations such as driver hour limits

and emissions caps, along with driver recruitment and retention.

“Small and midsize trucking companies are finding they are ill-equipped to adapt,” the story says, citing re-

regulations,” says Eric Peterson, who drove his truck for 17 years but couldn’t keep up with his expenses and now works for an hourly wage with a local carrier.

Owner-ops can still do well, and our Truckers of the Year are the road-tested proof search that shows hundreds of carriers with an average fleet size of “about a dozen vehicles” have gone out of business in the past two years. And others have sold out, typically to larger competitors with the cash or credit “to weather changes in the industry.”

Pending regulations, specifically the e-log mandate, will force more small fleets out of the market, the story explains, quoting a veteran owner-op.

I’m considerably more hopeful. For proof that trucking can still be a great business for owner-ops, look no further than our Truckers of the Year on page 20. There you’ll find the stories of several folks with a passion for their trucks and their careers. And they’re doing just fine, thank you.

DOT eyes automatic braking mandate The trucking industry has another acronym to get familiar with: FCAM, for forward collision avoidance and mitigation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published a notice stating the agency plans to evaluate FCAM technology with an eye toward a heavy-duty equipment mandate.

A petition for such a rulemaking was submitted in February by the Truck Safety Coalition, the Center for Auto Safety, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, and Road Safe America.

“In work zone areas and when traffic is significantly slowed or at a complete stop, cars are particularly vulnerable to being rear-ended by large trucks,” John Lannen, executive director of the Truck Safety Coalition, said in submitting the petition. “Trucks are overrepresented in fatal highway crashes, and they are even more so in fatal work zone crashes. This is why it is imperative that FCAM technology is required safety equipment in large trucks.”

The petitioners claim FCAM systems have the potential to provide significant safety and economic benefits,

citing estimated safety benefits from a 2012 research study conducted by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).

Truck and safety-systems manufacturers are rolling out the next generation of automatic emergency braking systems for truck tractors, designed for improved performance that warns the driver and will automatically brake in response to stationary vehicles and objects in the road ahead.

“This is a positive event as NHTSA will continue to move forward with research that builds awareness for and reinforces the value of these technologies to help mitigate crashes and save lives, something that many fleets today that have adopted collision mitigation systems already understand,” said Fred Andersky, director of government and industry affairs for Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems. “It is still important, however, to keep in mind that these are driver assistance technologies, not driver replacement technologies. The driver is and will continue to be an integral part of the overall fleet safety equation.”

Kenworth T680 tempts troops When Spec. Charles Bailes returns to hauling fuel, oils and other hazardous materials for the private sector, he has at least one thing on his wish list.

He wants to drive a truck like the Kenworth T680 he saw parked just outside Hangar No. 10 during the Washington State Service Member For Life Transition Summit held recently at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM).

“It’s real nice and it’s got plenty of room,” Bailes said, after climbing down off the cab step. “It’s like a palace compared to the military trucks we drive.”

Peterbilt’s ‘Red Oval’ OKs pre-owned trucks The Red Oval program is a new certified pre-owned truck sales effort being launched by Peterbilt Motors for its dealer network. The OEM said certified “Red Oval” pre-owned trucks go through a 150-point inspection and are covered by a complimentary warranty package.

Available through its dealer network and Paccar Financial Used Truck Centers, certified Red Oval trucks feature a customer loyalty program and are available with preferred financing options through Paccar Financial, the OEM noted.

Only trucks four model years or newer and with less than 450,000 mi. are eligible for Red Oval certification.

The complimentary warranty package for Red Oval trucks includes a comprehensive, factory-authorized engine warranty that covers the aftertreatment system and provides up to one year or 125,000 mi. of coverage. Peterbilt noted an optional extended coverage package of up to 60 months or 625,000 mi. can be added. Both plans include free towing and a zero dollar deductible.

FMCSA pats itself on the back

By Kevin Jones, Editor THE FEDERAL MOTOR CARRIER SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (FMCSA) has looked closely at its own fundamental safety evaluation program and determined the agency is doing a pretty good job, given the challenges of its mission and the limited resources at its disposal.

FMCSA released a Congressionally directed report that shows the amount of data used in the agency’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) is “clearly sufficient” to allow FMCSA to identify high-risk trucking companies, the agency said in a news release.

The report comes as Congress considers legislation aimed at reforming FMCSA, its regulatory agenda, and safety scoring model. The self-analysis also refutes critical oversight reports from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Dept. of Transportation’s Office of the Inspector General. Additionally, trade groups, including American Trucking Assns., Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn., National Private Truck Council, and Truckload Carriers Assn., have called for the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) carrier rankings to be removed from public view due to questions over the scoring system and the underlying data.

Among the shortcomings pointed out in Washington and by the industry, only 200,000 of the 525,000 active carriers

in the system have enough inspection data to be ranked in the rolling 24-month scoring calculations at the heart of the CSA program. The report found that SMS identifies the carriers involved in 90% of the more than 100,000 crashes that occur each year, and those that are identified as high-risk carriers continue to have crash rates that are twice the national average.

Another concern has been that the scoring system, which requires three to five inspections to generate a ranking in one of the safety categories (BASICs), is unfair to the small trucking companies that do get scored. In a February 2014 review that was the basis for testimony before the Senate last March, GAO posed an alternative methodology that would limit the use of safety performance data for assessing risk only to carriers that undergo 20 or more roadside inspections.

The FMCSA report finds, however, that if the number of inspections required for prioritization increased to 20 or more, only about 52,000 carriers (10%) could be identified for proactive interventions.

“FMCSA’s prioritization tool would then be skewed towards the largest motor carriers,” the report stated.

“While larger companies have more crashes due to their exposure, as a group, they have lower crash rates (crash risk) than smaller motor carriers. Ignoring the readily apparent lapses in smaller carriers’ safety management controls, while focusing only on larger carriers, limits the agency’s ability to reduce crash risk on our highways.”

The analysis revealed no significant difference in actual crash rates between small carriers and those with 20 or more roadside inspections.

Moore Transport relies on equipment, technology and people for its success AUTO HAULING Moore Transport is on a rapid growth path. In 2013, the Richardson, TX-based auto hauler had 22 trucks. Today it fields 150 units, and it is adding new equipment at a rate of 20 to 30 trucks per month.

Founded in 2005 by CEO Gary Moore, the company’s success is built on several factors. Having owned multiple dealerships, Moore says he learned how to meet their needs for quality transport solutions.

In 2010, Dan Faircloth joined Moore Transport as COO and immediately began building relationships with auto manufacturers. The manufacturer-to-dealer network he helped create today provides services to almost every major automaker in the U.S. “To support these relationships,” Moore says, “we’re building a fleet that allows for the ability to expand operational capacity. Significant investments in new assets have kept dependability high, with the average vehicle age between 1.5 and 2 years. Also, our trailers have the capacity to carry 11 vehicles, an above-industry normal load factor.”

Moore Transport operates from 17 company locations, including terminals in Ohio, North Carolina, Michigan, Rhode Island, Maryland, and Virginia. The com-

pany’s fleet includes 2015 and 2016 model-year Volvo, Peterbilt, and Freightliner units coupled mainly to Cottrell trailers, a mix of quick loaders, and high rails including NextGen units that utilize straps to soft-tie the inventory to prevent damage.

An aggressive preventive maintenance program, headed up by vice president of maintenance Mike Morvilius, keeps equipment free of defects. The fleet is maintained at two company shops, with a third location planned.

Outside providers, such as AmeriQuest Transportation Services and its Road Rescue call center and network of approved service providers, are also used.

FleetNet America’s towing and third-party service provider network as well as its TMcare program help manage maintenance and repair events.

“Technology is the key to accurate and timely information,” Mike Owens, vice president of technology, says, “so we’ve invested heavily in our transportation management system and in leading-edge in-cab technologies. All of our equipment has Qualcomm mobile computing platforms, and all drivers are assigned hand-

held devices. The systems communicate real-time, accurate information on location, routing, fuel optimization and hours of service. The tablets are also used for electronic proof of delivery.”

“Our drivers access Qualcomm electronic log and hours-of-service applications and automatically capture and record driving and off-duty time,” Moore adds. “We have some drivers who are home every night and others who can be on the road for three or more days, and most of them favor utilizing the HOS module because they realize they can make the same money and get more rest under the new rules.”

Overall, the opportunities, equipment and technology offered by Moore Transport are making it easier to recruit new drivers. As a result, even with 20 or more new trucks being added to the fleet every month, it has no empty seats to fill.

“Our wide-ranging efforts and everyone’s dedication are what have allowed us to maintain a growth rate of over 100% per year for the past several years,” Moore says.

A trucker’s number-one job is to operate with the public’s safety in mind So, have you picked out the common thread in all of these discussions? Highway safety.

The reasons for this are many: some economic and some very personal due to a highway-related tragedy. But in the final analysis, trucks and highway safety go hand-in-hand.

Recently, I’ve read or heard news stories of truckers directing road rage at other motorists. And while the stress and frustration of dealing with the driving public as a trucker has been constant, it’s imperative truckers always take the high road when it comes to safely maneuvering 40 tons around other motorists.

The question is not who’s right and who’s wrong in any highway situation.

OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS, there’s been a common thread running through the Business of Trucking columns. I’ve discussed the importance of sleep—not just in the context of how it affects driving but for your overall health—and how crumbling highways and bridges aren’t just an economic disaster on the horizon but a highway safety catastrophe. In other columns, the discussion has covered electronic logging devices and the upcoming mandate. Speed limiters are also on the horizon, along with a change in training procedures for entry-level truckers. Add to this the possibility of opening OTR Interstate driving to 18to 20-year-olds.

In 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there was a 4% increase over 2011 in fatalities involving commercial trucks. Large trucks accounted for 4% of all registered vehicles and 9% of total vehicle-miles traveled. Yet these large trucks accounted for 8% of all vehicles involved in fatal crashes and 3% of all vehicles involved in injury and property-damage-only crashes.

Many of those deaths are people who have zero control over the actions of the driver of the light passenger vehicle in which they’re riding. This is why it’s the responsibility of truck drivers to be the safest drivers on the road.

is compromised. Truckers aren’t required to teach other drivers how to be safe, but it is up to us to demonstrate through our daily driving actions how safety is accomplished. We lead by example.

During a quarter-century plus on the road, I’ve learned that courtesy isn’t something I can teach other drivers from the cab of a truck. The only thing I could do from my cab was to protect myself, my truck, my freight and those traveling around me by being vigilant as to what was going on. I was constantly looking for that alternate safe direction to take when another driver made a mistake, got aggressive or wasn’t paying attention.

In 81% of fatal crashes involving a large truck, there was at least one additional vehicle involved. Conversely, in fatal crashes involving passenger vehicles, an additional vehicle was involved only 58% of the time.

In 46% of the two-vehicle fatal crashes, both the large truck and the other vehicle were proceeding in a straight line at the time of the crash. In 9% of the crashes, the other vehicle was turning.

In 12%, one of the vehicles was negotiating a curve. In 7% of fatal crashes, either the truck or the other vehicle was stopped or parked in a traffic lane (5% and 2%, respectively). In 31% of the two-vehicle fatal crashes involving a large truck and another type of vehicle, both vehicles were struck in the front.

The truck was struck in the rear more than three times as often as the other vehicle (20% compared to 6%).

MY OBJECTIVES WERE:

What do these numbers mean? First, it needs to be noted that nearly 80% of all commercial truck/light passenger vehicle accidents are the fault of the other driver, not the trucker.

First and foremost, to maintain safety, period. If this meant slowing down and letting others pass, so be it. If it meant speeding up to break a logjam, then that’s what I did.

Generally, I went with the flow but kept as much distance between my truck and other vehicles as possible, even if it meant backing off.

The number-one responsibility of the professional truck driver must always be safety, and that means every trucker contributes to the safety of all who travel around him or her.

To maintain a speed that kept me between the herds.

This approach has served me well, as I have over 30 years of being a commercial trucker with no accidents or tickets.

And I’ve never missed an appointment for a pickup or a delivery by taking the time necessary to operate safely.

If caught in a herd, to work at being at the back of it instead of vying for the pole position.

Life is way too short, and to be in an accident in which a life is lost is not something any of us needs to experience and then have to live with.

To never be in a hurry, especially when in heavy traffic.

Safety trumps everything.

To always maintain a safe distance in that area between the herds of vehicles.

But the sobering statistic is that when a CMV is involved, 71% of the fatalities occur in the light passenger vehicle.

Is there a loophole in

SMARTWAY?

POP CULTURE JUNKIES like myself are obsessed with movie quotes. A personal favorite is from Tommy Boy, which starred the late, great Chris Farley. There is a particular scene in the movie where Tommy Callahan (Farley’s

decided to check out a few. All of them were offshore manufacturers, and they featured tires with tread designs that were amazingly similar to namebrand models.

Since 2013, the number of SmartWay-verified truck tires has tripled and the number of brands has doubled. Despite my 30-plus years in the business, when I looked at the list, there were a lot of names I didn’t recognize, so I

I am amazed at the highly efficient rate of verification for SmartWay applications. In the past year, they approved almost 300 new SmartWay-verified truck tires, which must be some kind of record for a government agency, federal or state.

I stand by an earlier column that SmartWay is more about marketing, especially when it comes to LRR tires.

We’re reaching the point where I think one of four things is going to happen to the tire program:

It’s still too early to tell if SmartWay will ever achieve meaningful reduction in emissions. These could be the baby steps that ultimately lead to a revolution and I will be proven wrong. Or, its status as a marketing campaign for LRR tires remains unchanged because the standards are too low and/or there is no policing.

The point of naming American Trucker’s 2015 Truckers of the Year and finalists isn’t to proclaim the folks on the next few pages the best of the best; the point is to show how easy it is for our staff to visit truck stops and truck shows and find some really outstanding professionals.

So recognizing a few of the best truckers isn’t so much about bragging rights as it is about reminding everyone what it takes to be successful on the road these days. And even though we’re looking for expert tips, we’re not offering a list of self-help shortcuts here.

There’s no formal process for picking a winner—no checklist, no scoring system, no essay contest. Some folks just stand out, and this year’s class simply represents the most memorable of the many outstanding men and women we’ve met on the asphalt or in the fuel line or at the lunch counter this year.

This year’s leading candidates share the same essential traits as previous winners, and it’s the same formula for success in any field: Know what you’re doing, love what you’re doing, and work really, really hard.

While we’re sure everyone who reads American Trucker is a serious and worthy professional, we all know there are plenty of folks out there who would do us all a favor by improving their skills—to put it mildly.

Wieczoreks Our 2015 Truckers of the Year are John and Carol Wieczorek of Terry, MO. We met them this spring when we chatted about technology for the story “Connected Truckers.”

rious about keeping his old-school reputation. At least when it suits his operation, and his home-built tractor is getting 8 mpg on super single tires, he boasts.

John considers himself to be an oldschool owner-operator. He grew up in the shop of his father’s small trucking company, and he’s been running his own rig for 32 years.

They did outsource the refurbishment of their salvage-yard sleeper find.

He’s been with Mercer Transportation for the last 12 of those years, hauling mostly sensitive military freight. Wife Carol has been co-driving with him for 11 years.

His tractor, a 2013 Freightliner Coronado, was built by John and his son from a glider kit with a 1998 remanufactured Detroit 12.7L engine—again, he’s se-

For the record, his previous truck had 1.5 million mi. on it and was only in the shop three times, he notes. But John and Carol also have gotten serious about their personal PM schedules, with each losing more than 50 lbs. last year.

As someone whose whole life has revolved around trucking, he’s not at all sold on change for change’s sake.

“As far back as I can remember, I was riding with my father, sitting in restaurants listening, hanging around the shop,” he says, recalling a time when a cross-county run could take 10 days.

“The old drivers miss the diners, the tables at greasy spoons where you could sit and talk. They taught me a lot of things.”

And he’s returning the favor.

MENTORS The most impressive thing about the Wieczoreks is their willingness to help others in the business, says Mercer general manager Dale Corum. And, he adds, their sacrifice of time likely comes at a cost in lost revenue opportunities.

“They’re not the sort of people who are in this just for themselves. They under-

stand there are ups and downs in the industry, ups and downs in the economy, ups and downs with every company— things are going to go wrong,” Corum tells American Trucker. “But those two go far out of their way to help people around them be successful. That’s what separates them most. They understand their numbers, they know what they need to do, and they are quick to share that with other people.”

In recognition of their efforts, the Wieczoreks have been selected to be among the original 15 “Mercer Mentors,” a program aimed at recognizing and formally establishing just the sort of peer guidance the Wieczoreks have been providing for years.

“They’re always upbeat. Anybody can learn from them if you hang around very long.”

But, as Corum points out, the Wieczoreks didn’t get to where are they are by talking their way to success. They continue to learn about the business and improve.

“There are a whole lot of people in every walk of life who don’t like to be told what to do. They want to pretend that they know as much as the next guy; that they’ve got it all figured out,” Corum

says. “John’s a guy who will listen to everybody and he’ll glean what might work for him. He’ll try it and make his own decisions. He’s just quick to listen.”

ADAPTING So what happened to the good old days of sitting around the coffee shop talking shop?

“Technology,” John says without hesitation.

Still, the Wieczoreks know when to fight and when to switch.

“Just 20 years ago, who would’ve thought we could be rolling across New Mexico surfing the Internet from the bunk?” John says. “I adapt to things pretty quickly.”

The Wieczoreks have an impressive set of gadgets in, on, and around the rig, including several Apple devices and a laptop; an “in-motion” satellite television receiver mounted on the roof of the sleeper; his and hers SiriusXM radio receivers to solve the problem of who decides what to listen to; and a dash packed with bypass transponders, a navigation screen, and a monitor for a side-mounted camera system.

More importantly, modern communication technology provides some great tools for making up some of that lost time with other truckers in the diner.

“The cell phone has been the greatest improvement in the trucking industry,” John says, and he recalls the pleasure of stopping in the rain to find a pay phone for loads and directions, or to talk to family.

Many young truckers today may have never even used a pay phone, Carol points out.

John emphasizes that a lot of times— and especially for those just getting started as a driver or an independent— finding a little expert advice can be as easy as talking to fellow truckers.

“Share your phone number with people. With cell phones now, we can all talk as much as we want as long as we want,” John says.

“The iPhone is always in his hand,” Carol adds.

DOWN TO BUSINESS Among his recommendations to a trucker looking to become an owner-op, John puts having the right equipment high on the list—and that means, specifically, that an independent shouldn’t buy more truck than he or she needs.

“We’ve got a lot of equipment out here that is just way overpriced for the job,” he says. “A lot of people have a lot of money tied up in that payment, for no more than they’re making. You can’t overextend yourself.”

Of course, that’s easy for someone to say who has the wrench skills he does.

(And also see the story of V.L. Harris that follows.) But even some basic mechanical skills and being aware of what’s going on with the truck—plus diligently sticking to a PM schedule—can go a long way.

As for making the transition from company driver to owner-operator, the Wieczoreks recommend taking several months to run that company truck as if it were your own.

“Take a look at all the expenses and how much fuel you’re buying. A lot of guys are working on a percentage now, so they can see what the freight pays. A company guy can do that real easy these days,” John says. “Just get a notebook and keep track of everything as you’re driving that company truck.

Get an idea of what the payment is.

Keep track of the service you’re getting done, on the road or in the shop. If you can’t do it on paper, you’re not going to make it in real life.”

Networking is also critical when it comes to developing a customer base or choosing brokers or a company to lease on with.

“People are chasing big money out here, but then they find it’s not there with some of these companies. Everybody paints a pretty picture for you, but then you’ll find out [this isn’t for you]. Driving a truck is not a job; it’s a lifestyle. You have to want to live the lifestyle.”

The Mercer GM agrees, and again points to the Wieczoreks as role models.

“There are a lot of people who get in this business and think they’re going to be good owner-operators, but they’re just not quite cut out for it. John and Carol are great owner-operators because they understand their numbers,” Corum says. “They know what they have to make. They are careful about not overextending themselves. They understand their fuel mileage and what their loads are going to cost them.”

But when it comes right down to it, they work.

“They’re not afraid to do anything. As truckers pulling an open deck trailer, they’re used to tarping and untarping, chaining and unchaining,” Corum continues. “They don’t fuss or stew about it—it’s part of the business, part of the life they’ve chosen. And they just get out there and roll up their sleeves. They do whatever they have to do to keep that truck moving.”

Of note, when asked about teaming with a spouse, the Wieczoreks report finding more and more couples on the road—and for many, it’s become a paid semi-retirement. Instead of an RV, they’re traveling in a truck.

“They sell everything they’ve got, buy a truck, and go out and see the country. They don’t work real hard, waiting on loads in expediting,” John says.

“They’re just enjoying life.”

Kind of like the Wieczoreks—the ‘enjoying’ part, that is. For the Truckers of the Year, of course, working hard comes easy.

Von “VL” Harris, Like John Wieczorek, Houston-based specialty flatbedder Von “VL” Harris grew up around trucking and in the shop. American Trucker met Harris in Dallas where he’d entered his 1990 Peterbilt 379 in the Pride & Polish competition—and where he took third place (pictured above right with his trophy).

It was, Harris reported at the time, the first show appearance of his everyday truck. But the big red Pete stood out among even the highly chromed and little used show ponies on the trophy-rig circuit for a couple of reasons.

First, the truck could be the only Pete on the road with a Mack bulldog hood ornament, and the rig shares Harris’s nickname, “Junkyard Dogg.” More noteworthy, especially in contrast to the more intense show truck competitors who display past prizes, this Pete instead displayed a dozen or more framed photographs of loads.

Harris, we quickly learned, is proud to be an independent trucker and considers himself an expert in transporting some very heavy machinery to and from the ports on the Gulf of Mexico.

That expertise comes from 27 years on the job, but the business is in his blood. His grandfather owned a small

construction company, his father was a truck driver, and his uncles were mechanics with their own shop.

“I grew up around entrepreneurs. I came up more fortunate than some in that era. I saw role models. Even when I was young, in the summertime I would go to work with them and I got paid,” he says. “I was always told that you don’t depend on anybody else; you learn how to do it yourself. It doesn’t matter if you mess it up; you keep on doing it until you learn how to do it right. That’s my mentality now.”

Harris figures his passion for trucking, as with many others who make a career out of it, stems from being around trucks as a little boy. He fondly recalls getting in his father’s truck when it was in the yard and “playing truck driver.”

EXPERIENCE IS EVERYTHING Harris suggests young truckers can and should benefit from the experience of veterans—only he’s not seeing much cooperation anymore.

“When I was coming up, if you did something wrong—even just changing lanes—the old-timers would say, ‘Hey, man, what’s your problem? Your

blinkers not working?’” Harris recalls.

“People would talk to you on the radio and tell you the right way to do things, how to tie your load down—more is better, less is no good. And we wanted to learn. Nowadays with these drivers, it’s a job. It’s not a career like it was for me. Some of them don’t care.”

And it’s obvious when you look at some of the equipment on the road.

“My truck and trailer is like a show truck.

But I keep it that way for me, for the pride that I have,” he says.

The key is to be willing to invest in the top equipment and maintain it properly. But that’s easier said than done.

Harris emphasizes the importance of having an equipment purchasing plan and budgeting for it. And that means saving money in advance—not in buying now and paying later.

Harris does get a break on maintenance costs. He can do virtually all of his own mechanical repairs—and that includes painting and doing body work. But he has to understand the marketplace, and he’s developed a broad customer base and knows which brokers he can rely on.

“I don’t waste a lot of money. When we make it, we try to save it because there are going to be some rough days. A lot of new owner-operators don’t understand the process,” Harris says.

And he speaks from experience, noting that his trucking business has gone broke four times during several Texas oil booms and busts, in addition to regular

seasonal slowdowns in heavy haul. That includes building up his own fleet to 75 trucks in the 1990s—a business he lost when fuel and insurance soared in the 2000s. What had been an easy 8% profit quickly became a 10% operating deficit.

He’s learned to carefully weigh his operating costs when considering how to price his loads, and always to arrange

back hauls in advance. He also doesn’t buy fuel on credit and immediately deducts the cost from the amount he’s banking for the trip.

“Trucking is load to load, week to week.

It’s how you survive,” Harris says. “I’ve tried it all kinds of ways, and credit is no good. If you pay as you go, you’ll never go broke.”

John Smedile, honorable mention “They both have to do with public service, and you’re doing something that most people don’t want to do,” he says.

“You’re helping people with what they need. You don’t know what to expect until you get there. It’s not a 9 to 5 job where you’re sitting at your desk. You’re constantly on the go.”

And he’s had occasion to use his first-responder training on the road.

“I have a full medical jump-bag with me at all times,” he says. “Unfortunately, I’ve stopped at several fatal accidents.”

As with Von Harris, John Smedile carries around an interesting record of the loads he hauls. Leased to a specialty car-haul company, he routinely packs the enclosed trailer with millions of dollars’ worth of new and classic autos. His notebook of customers reads like the guest list for an A-list party in Beverly Hills—a frequent destination for the New Jersey-based owner-op.

Not that his rig isn’t worthy of the red carpet, too. “Stacks the 389 Pete” is a custom 2008 model with a “highly modified” Caterpillar engine by Pittsburgh Power that puts out close to 1,000 hp.

The trailer, also custom-built, features polished hardwood floors and wall paneling and can transport six automobiles.

Smedile has been hauling for Horseless Carriage Carriers Inc. for 10 years, and he bought his first truck 20 years ago when

he pulled a chemical tanker long haul.

But when it comes to careers, Smedile is more fortunate than most—twice as fortunate, in fact.

His other passion is firefighting, which he started on a dare in 1986 and has continued as a volunteer firefighter since.

As to why he’s a trucker, the answer is short and sweet: “Freedom,” Smedile says without hesitation. “Firefighting’s my first true love, but there’s nothing better than trucking.”

But the two professions are attractive for many of the same reasons, Smedile explains—although, ideally, he doesn’t get the adrenaline rush from cruising down the highway that he gets when entering a smoke-filled burning building.

WITHOUT A SCRATCH More pleasant to recall are his deliveries.

First to Smedile’s mind is Roger Penske’s Bugatti Veyron, a street-legal, 16-cyl. supercar capable of 250+ mph—and a sticker price that approaches $3 million with all the bells and whistles.

“After a while, they all just become cars,” he deadpans. “When I first started, it would take me three or four hours to load the trailer.

“Like anything else, the more you think about it, the more likely you are to screw something up. Once you get it, you get it—but not everybody’s cut out for cars, I tell you,” he continues. “At the end of the day, it’s just like firefighting: You do what you’ve got to do and go home.”

We handle most maintenance inhouse. We job out major repairs and do most minor ones in-house.

How do you handle the maintenance on your trucks and/or trailers to minimize downtime?

We are aggressive with our preventive maintenance. We don’t let minor repairs slide so as to prevent them from becoming big and expensive ones or having to be done on the road.

How do you ensure good mileage from tires?

Proper inflation is the first rule. The second rule is we use Cat Eyes to monitor correct inflation and Centramatics to ensure proper tire balance and even wear. This is done on both tractor and trailer.

Do you stock any parts for your trucks or purchase as needed?

We purchase parts and supplies as needed.

Greg and Carolyn Buckley, owners Greg Buckley drove as a company driver for 35 years before taking a leap of faith with his wife Carolyn to start Adirondack Mountain Express five years ago. Their truck is a 2006 Kenworth 600 with 86-in. sleeper pulling a 2005 53-ft. Great Dane van trailer. They haul general dry freight, mainly in the states along the Appalachian Trail, with a primary focus on decent-paying, profitable loads in the region.

How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck or trailer?

At present, we’re planning on this being our last truck. I’m 62 and hope to retire from this great career in a few more years.

What programs do you have in place to ensure CSA compliance for your trucks and/or trailers?

We use an aggressive preventive maintenance program and pretrip and post-trip inspections, along with never letting a needed repair wait [so we can] stay in compliance with CSA. What do you enjoy most about trucking and hauling the type of freight you do?

Being able to go where we want, when

we want is what is the most appealing about having our own authority.

As an example, we just took four days off away from the truck and phones to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It’s very difficult to do that as an employee driver or a lease driver.

What does your company do best?

We’re on time with no damage and clean equipment.

SOLUTION

When you are in the business of maintaining and repairing tanker trailers for a living, you are being called upon to take care of equipment that’s expected to be in operation for a long, long time—sometimes as long as 20 years.

Three years ago, Utah Tank & Trailer bought a plasma-cutting “table” that allows virtually any part needed to be made out of a wide choice of metals onsite. To say the least, the company’s solution to its problem proved to be different.

That can pose some issues, however, when it comes to finding specific components and parts. Not only do such items become more difficult to obtain as the trailer ages, it often becomes impossible to get hold of parts within the time frame expected by a customer.

“It’s a 300-amperage, high-definition, plasma-cutting machine that can duplicate factory parts or be used to make our own specialty designs,” McKenzie notes.

“Almost every tank trailer model is different in some way and customized to fit specific needs.”

“Uptime is critical in the trucking business,” explains Barry McKenzie, general manager for Salt Lake City-based Utah Tank & Trailer. “Remember, too, that tankers are typically the most expensive type of trailer in operation—some cost six figures. Customers don’t want something that costly sitting idle.”

Plasma is created by heating a gas or subjecting it to a strong electromagnetic field applied with a laser or microwave generator. This can then cut through electrically conductive materials, including steel, aluminum, brass and copper.

In business for 15 years, Utah Tank & Trailer operates an eight-bay, 65,000-sq.-ft. shop that sits on a five-acre site, along with 14,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space that keeps some $1.8 million worth of parts close at hand for all manner of tank trailer repairs. Still, that vast inventory sometimes isn’t enough.

Plasma cutting is attractive because of the ability to make high-speed, precision-metal cuts with a relatively low cost of operation. The machines, though, typically cost well into the five figures.

For Utah Tank & Trailer, the results for customers far outweigh the investment costs.

“Why plasma? Because we have no time to wait,” McKenzie explains. “If a part is available, we’ll buy it and have it shipped to us because, of course, it costs more to make a part than to buy it. We’ll only build it if we can’t find it.”

The plasma-cutting machine also allows Utah Tank & Trailer to offer customization services such as the ability to “dress up” tanks and even trucks with specialized nameplates cut out of steel or aluminum.

“Our customers are typically of a higher profile. They’ll often look for something a little extra to help them stand out,” McKenzie says. “But that doesn’t mean they’ll accept lower quality. They want anything we do done right—and done right the first time.”

But when it comes to meeting customer demands for faster turnaround time and custom items, the facility’s plasma-cutting machine is worth its weight in proverbial gold, he says.

“Can we put a pencil to its exact value?

No,” McKenzie stresses. “But we get an awful lot of additional business because our customers know we have it. We can build stuff no one else makes and if something is broken, we can repair it better than the original.”

BATTERIES ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS and higher fuel costs have restricted idling of commercial vehicles. For fleets and their drivers, that has meant more starts at more frequent intervals with less recharge time in between along with greater demand to power accessories and comfort items.

“Today’s 12-volt battery may look similar to one from 20 years ago on the outside,” states Gale Kimbrough, engineering & tech services manager at Interstate Batteries, “but what it has on the inside is what really makes a difference. A modern Group 31 battery can perform both tens of thousands of starting cycles and hundreds of deep cycles.”

Designed as a heavy-duty cycling battery, Trojan Battery says its OverDrive AGM 31 is engineered to withstand the rigors of deep-discharge applications, such as powering hotel loads commonly used by drivers. The battery features a sunburst array grid design that the company notes channels power to its focal point of charge. This enables it to provide 730 cold cranking amps (CCAs) of cranking power to start engines while also delivering the long duration energy storage required for creature comforts and auxiliary power applications. The design of the OverDrive battery includes heavy-duty, thick-plate construction and high-density paste.

The RoadForce AGM 200 battery features a sealed, maintenance-free design with the electrolyte contained within absorbent, sponge-like, high-porosity, non-woven glass separators.

The separator design allows gases to recombine inside the battery, limiting water loss and outgassing while holding the liquid electrolyte immobilized.

Odyssey 12V heavy-duty batteries

by EnerSys include the Performance Series, which the company says provides reliable engine starting, and the Extreme Series, which is designed to also provide power to auxiliary systems without idling. The AGM batteries are created with thin-plate pure lead (TPPL) technology to provide power.

Modern batteries are charged to fulfill needs Interstate’s newest battery is an AGM (absorbed glass mat) pure lead Group 31 design, which Kimbrough says has extremely low internal resistance that allows for power availability. He adds that its internal construction provides for vibration resistance characteristics along with the ability to deep cycle 400 times at about 80% depth of discharge while producing tens of thousands of vehicle starts.

Exide’s flagship product is the RoadForce AGM 200, which the company says has active material supported by AGM separators that produce twice the cycling at moderate discharge levels and 3.4 times more cycling ability at deep discharge levels compared to conventional flooded batteries.

Exide Technologies offers a range of batteries for heavy-duty truck applications designed to address the need for frequent starts and increasing power demands for accessories. Included are Commercial 31, Extreme Cycler and Extreme Power 1000 models. The batteries are designed with suitcase handles and side grips for easier installation, a flush manifold cover, a heavy-duty ribbed case, and a manifold vent system to virtually eliminate terminal corrosion.

Johnson Controls says its AGM Group 31 battery technology is built to deliver twice the starting power and the extreme deep-cycle performance of a conventional lead-acid battery. The 825-CCA batteries in threaded stud and SAE post designs feature the company’s PowerFrame grid technology, which it says provides up to 70% better electrical flow than other grid solutions and increases durability, corrosion resistance, and cranking power.
