Will apps replace
BROKERS? by Kevin Jones, editor kevin.jones@penton.com
LATELY I’VE SPENT a lot more time talking to truckers about their newest smartphones or tablets than I have talking about their trucks. I can’t decide if that’s a good thing or not.
Don’t get me wrong. I love gadgets, especially those that make my life better. But I assume most folks in trucking got into it because they were more interested in diesel horsepower than in the memory size and processor speed of their mobile device. Still, it’s a sign of the times. To succeed these days, a trucker needs a technology edge. And, apparently, for some smart people with mad computer skills, the supply chain is an area ripe for restructuring. Among the apps coming my way recently are several taking aim at becoming “the Uber of trucking,” meaning they hope to replace the middle man and put shippers and truckers into direct contact. Convoy is a Seattle-based startup with the modest aim of “reinventing the $800 billion trucking business.” “The goal is to make a better experience for truck drivers and carriers, in

particular independent owner-operators and small truckers,” founder and CEO Dan Lewis said. “I’d love to be at the point in five years where our customers are thinking, ‘I don’t know how we did this before Convoy.’”
Still, the “Uberization” of freight will happen more quickly in some sectors than in others. “Given all the nuances in the truckload sector in particular, it will be interesting
Given the nuances, it will be interesting to see how ‘Uber for trucking’ works Similarly, NEXT Trucking co-founder Elton Chung has seen firsthand how the supply chain can be cruel to truckers, and that has contributed to driver and capacity issues within the industry. Chung, who has been a shipper, broker, and a carrier, designed NEXT to connect shippers directly with truckers.
to see how this works,” said market analyst John Larkin at the Truckstop.com user conference last month. “Technology people see it as a very simple problem. But they’re missing the complexity of most freight moves, and I think they’re going to lose a lot in the translation.”
Stay tuned—or rather, stay connected.
“We’re trying to eliminate the broker,” Chung said. “We don’t need them anymore. As long as we know the shipper’s and trucker’s needs, we can connect them.”

Used-truck sales peak; now a buyer’s market By Sean Kilcarr, Editor-at-Large
The heavy-duty used-truck market most likely reached its peak sales moment back in the first half of 2015, as used-truck values are declining as larger inventories begin to build, according to Steve Clough, president of Arrow Truck Sales Inc. “The 2011 models are the ones now coming into the used-truck market in large volumes, especially over the last four to five months,” he explained during a conference call with reporters hosted by Stifel Capital Markets. “Along with the 2012-13 models just now hitting the market, it virtually guarantees a supply increase [of used trucks] for the next several years.” Clough stressed that used-truck supply is mainly driven by the number of new trucks sold three to five years ago—and production of new trucks, especially Class 8 models, began to rise significantly during 2011 through 2013. According to numbers from Arrow Truck Sales, new Class 8 retail sales topped 171,000 units in 2011, increasing to 195,000 in 2012 before dipping slightly to 185,000 in 2013.
And used-truck inventories will only continue to grow as Class 8 trucks sold in 2014 and 2015 begin to be traded in or come of of leases. “The used-truck market can be very volatile and is driven by demand,” Clough noted. “So the one thing we don’t know right now is what freight demand going forward will look like. Will it be strong enough to help absorb this extra supply?” That increase in supply is also going to put more pressure on pricing, he added, noting that the market is experiencing about a 10 to 12% adjustment in values since the first half of the year. Clough explained that in the usedtruck market, manual transmissions typically came with a “premium” in the past, as manual gearboxes were what used-truck buyers wanted. “But now we’re seeing much more demand for AMTs,” he pointed out. “They are not being accepted equally across the market, but we’ve got a lot of pockets of demand where customers come in and want an AMT now.”

Test drive: Cummins 2017 ISX15 with Eaton Smart Advantage Truck operators have more options for integrated Cummins-Eaton ISX15 SmartAdvantage Powertrains, including a new direct drive ratio. To highlight that, the companies recently let reporters drive some tractor-trailers sporting different SmartAdvantage configurations—two of them with Cummins’ 2017 ISX15 diesel, for the first time. Some of the trucks came from Cummins’ Redefining Tour fleet, which showcases the capabilities of the current and upcoming ISX15 engines. The tour trucks together have logged nearly 77,000 mi. in the United States and Canada.
Mario Sanchez-Lara, director of on-highway communications and technical sales at Cummins, said the tour made believers of the drivers involved, including one who he said found the new trucks’ fuel economy, ease of operation and comfort so convincing it opened up the possibility of returning to a former career as an owner-operator. While the companies wouldn’t give
specifics about fuel economy of the 2017 engine, Mike Taylor, Cummins general manager of global powertrains, said Cummins expects the ISX15 will provide “best-in-class uptime with best-in-class fuel economy.” Also, “with maintenance, and I can’t say a whole lot more about this, it’s going to be game-changing,” he said. New SmartAdvantage Powertrain options include direct drive transmissions that optimize performance and fuel economy for regional and less-than-truckload carriers whose trucks cruise at speeds below 62 mph, according to Cummins

and Eaton. SmartAdvantage small-step overdrive powertrains, which are aimed at line-haul applications with cruising speeds above 62 mph, are now available with additional horsepower ratings.
When the SmartAdvantage Powertrains were released for 2014, the companies claimed they provided fuel economy gains of 3 to 5%, noted Ryan Trzybinski, Eaton’s global product strategy manager for line haul commercial powertrains. “We keep saying how we’re not done— this is a collaboration,” he said. “Since then, we’ve added SmartCoast, which is a neutral-coasting feature, and we’re up another 2% in fuel economy. We have done testing, and we’re up to 7% [fuel economy advantage] over competitive integrated powertrains.” The direct drive transmission options include 2.26 and 2.28 axle ratios with ISX15 engines rated at 400 and 450 hp. and use engine downspeeding to maximize fuel eficiency. The original small-step overdrive powertrain also employs downspeeding technology and has a 2.64 axle ratio and ISX15 with a 450-hp. rating. The small-step tranny configuration is now available with ISX15s with ratings of 400 and 420 hp. —AARON MARSH

Mack moves to integrate powertrain The new Mack Trucks axle line at the Volvo/Mack factory in Western Maryland represents a two-year, $30 million investment by the OEM aimed at furthering efforts to offer customers a completely integrated powertrain package. The goal is to make its dealerships a “one-stop-shop” for complete vehicle support, boosting fuel economy and making it easier for Mack to comply with Phase 2 greenhouse gas emissions rules. “Complete powertrain integration is extremely important today,” stressed Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks North America, at a recent event oficially inaugurating drive axle production and carrier housing machining at the 1.5-million-sq.-f. facility in Hagerstown, MD.
Stu Russoli, highway/powertrain marketing manager for Mack, said that building drive axles and machining carrier housings at the Hagerstown plant gives the OEM greater ability to tweak the entire powertrain system to potentially generate further fuel savings down the road. A Mack drive axle undergoes a leak test within the 1.5-million-sq.-ft. Hagerstown powertrain factory.
“Customers are looking for a competitive advantage with their trucks—demanding greater fuel economy and better vehicle performance—while they must also be in compliance with the next phase of Environmental Protection Agency greenhouse gas rules,” he said.
There’s also the opportunity to make drive axles smarter via in-house production. Adding sensors not only links them directly to the engine and transmission to boost fuel savings but possibly enhances prognostic maintenance care as well. The addition of axle production to Hagerstown is expected to add 100 jobs.

NACFE: Downspeeding explained, recommended A new confidence report issued by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) indicates that downspeeding, the practice of using fast gear ratios that lower the speed of the engine, can cut commercial truck fuel consumption by 2 to 3% because it allows the engine to operate at the most fuel-eficient rpm while generating only the minimal horsepower required under cruise conditions. The group said it researched nine diferent downspeeding applications using both proprietary and supplied engine and transmission combinations configured in one of two formats: • Direct drive transmission and fast
reduction. But given the potential for driveline failure, some manufacturers only approve it for true line-haul applications where the highest torque conditions occur infrequently.

Virtual Technician enhanced Detroit Connect has introduced features for its Virtual Technician remote diagnostic system to further improve integration and communications.
Available on all Freightliner and Western Star models spec’d with Detroit engines, the portal allows users to view and archive Engine Control reports.
“Intelligent connectivity is at the core of what we are ofering to drivers and fleet managers,” said Matt Pfafenbach, director of telematics for Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA). “By adding new technologies that provide more meaningful insights and visibility, we are further contributing to increased uptime, safety and eficiency.”
The portal, which will serve as the access point for all services ofered by Detroit Connect, will also include options for communications, reporting, and subscription management customization. Detroit Connect is piloting the portal with select customers through early 2016, with an anticipated rollout to all customers by the spring of 2016.
According to the company, a portal will provide additional information to Detroit Connect users about overall fleet health, as well as enable them to take a deeper dive into specific fault events communicated via Virtual Technician.
DTNA is also developing a new telematics platform; however, specific details have not been released. It will be available on select truck models in 2017.

• Overdrive transmission and slightly slower rear axle ratios. The somewhat slower axle ratio of an overdrive transmission spec subjects the transmission output, driveshafs, and axles to far less torque. This makes it appropriate for line haul, regional and city delivery applications.
NACFE suggests that an automatic or automated mechanical transmission should be spec’d on any downsped engine. www.truckingeficiency.org

Skirts, tails prove effective A recently released study from the National Research Council of Canada determined that the combined use of a rear fairing and trailer skirt provides a 10% increase in aerodynamic eficiency above the sum of the individual products. The review was conducted from 2012 to 2015. Products comparable to the Stemco TrailerTail and EcoSkirt were used in a 30% scale wind tunnel to evaluate the benefits attainable by a variety of commercial trucking aerodynamic devices, Stemco said. The study revealed that “side skirts and boat tails provide the greatest drag reductions” among the devices studied. Fleets using both devices can

save nearly 1,400 gals. of fuel per truck, the company added. Stemco said the test also confirmed company research that indicated that a four-sided, 4-f.-long TrailerTail 4x4 delivers slightly more drag reduction than the three-sided, 3-f.-long TrailerTail Trident. www.stemco.com

WASHINGTON UPDATE
No trucks allowed: DOT tackles parking By Aaron Marsh, Contributing Editor EFFORTS CONTINUE to try to figure out why commercial truck drivers frequently can’t find parking when and where they need it, and researchers are pointing to everything from the economy, to federal hours-of-service (HOS) regulations, to prostitution as contributors to the problem.
Those were some points that came up in a recent webinar discussing more findings from the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) study of truck parking undertaken thanks to Jason’s Law. Rolled into the MAP-21 highway funding legislation, Jason’s Law is named for Jason Rivenburg, a truck driver shot and killed in 2009 afer he was forced to park in an unsafe location. One thing listeners heard in the webinar is that the truck parking issue is confoundingly complex, with many factors that come into play. The good news, however, is that ideas are percolating in the public and private sectors to help fix the problem, and there have been some successes in that regard. Helping bring together and advance those ideas, FHWA has formed a new National Coalition on Truck Parking. FHWA’s Nicole Katsikides, manager of the agency’s Freight Performance Program, said that about 72% of

ers also help create and complicate the parking problem, according to Scott Grenerth, director of regulatory afairs at the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn. He also added shipper and receiver practices to the mix. They may tell a driver to expect to pick up or drop of a load at a certain time but fail to be ready, holding up the driver for hours. The shipper or receiver also may deny the truck driver parking, and the driver—thus delayed—may well have problems finding any available parking or end up leaving during rush hour. states reported having problems with truck parking, mainly in metro regions along trucking corridors during the week and at night. But when FHWA spoke with truck drivers, logistics personnel, and others such as truck stop owners, the figure was much closer to 100% claiming there are problems finding parking just about any time and in more rural areas as well. So the problem of truck parking availability begins to look more universal. The webinar presenters also talked about what’s causing the truck parking problem in the first place. Though they’re designed to keep drivers and trucks on the roadways safer, HOS regulations for commercial driv-
Many more factors fold into this equation, the presenters said, and make it a dificult problem for any one solution to fix. For example, communities often lack understanding or have a negative view of trucking and freight movement, and the reaction is something like “not in my back yard” when it comes to adding truck parking facilities near them. Katsikides reinforced that the public needs to get more on board with trucking, again citing a negative perception or unawareness of how important the job is that truck drivers are doing. “Maybe it’s time for some kind of truck drivers and truck parking campaign,” she suggested.

With focus on employees, Schilli still remains flexible FLATBED
Afer 40 years in business, there’s no doubt in Tom Schilli’s mind that change is the only constant. When it comes to regulatory issues that impact his company, he says the key is “to learn how to make it work for us. It’s dificult to avoid change imposed by regulations, so we embrace, accept and manage with it. When there are regulation changes, we look for good things.” “For example,” Schilli continues, “we think the pending regulation requiring electronic logging devices has awakened shippers and shown them how valuable a driver’s time can be. That’s actually helped us create a better way of life for our drivers.” Another issue that Schilli would like to see resolved is the lack of adequate, safe overnight parking and access to facilities for drivers. “It is something that gets in the way of a better experience for drivers across the industry,” he states, “and it’s a challenge we’ll be facing for years to come.” As the owner of Indiana-based Schilli Trans portation Services, Schilli says what’s most important is making and keeping commitments to employees. “Providing a good working environment helps us stay competitive,” he states. “For instance, we’re proud that over 20 years ago we realized how important it is to drivers to be home on weekends. We
14 AMERICAN TRUCKER / DECEMBER 2015
cater as much as possible to personal needs because that leads to a stable workforce. Good drivers have stable families and that leads to retention.” Driver recruitment and retention is especially challenging in the Schilli Specialized Flatbed Div., a platform trailer operation that hauls building materials, metal, machinery and wood products for customers in the eastern half of the U.S., specializing in job site deliveries. The issue is the manual labor required of flatbed drivers at pickup and delivery locations. “There’s a lot of time and efort involved in loading and unloading, tarping and uncovering flatbed loads,” Schilli relates, “and when the cargo is high of the ground, there’s an opportunity for drivers to fall. Drivers are still required to check that cargo is properly secured, but in most cases we either use loading services or stay away from facilities that do not have proper safety equipment.” The Flatbed Div. accounts for roughly one-third of the Schilli Transportation Services operation. In total, the diversified logistics, transportation and distribution services business operates 425 Kenworth
and Freightliner tractors and about 1,000 flatbed, dry van, moving and specialized trailers. A recent area of focus at Schilli, notes Jake Rudisill, general manager of Schilli Leasing, was to order 150 new East Manufacturing flatbed trailers. The BSTII 53-f. units are fitted with Hendrickson axle suspensions and disc brakes, as well as Jost landing gear and Hendrickson TireMaax Pro inflation systems. “We felt that all-aluminum trailers rated for a 65,000-lb.-capacity concentrated 4-ft. load would give us more flexibility and the ability to haul heavier loads,” Rudisill states. Value is exactly what Tom Schilli says his company is all about, beginning with his focus on attracting and keeping satisfied employees. “Today,” he states, “I get the most satisfaction out of coaching and watching our people succeed than I do from any material success that comes from running a successful business.”

THE BUSINESS OF TRUCKING
There are plenty of reasons as to why the industry is short on drivers
Thinkstock
by Tim Brady, Business Editor
16 AMERICAN TRUCKER / DECEMBER 2015
ARTICLE AFTER ARTICLE in the trucking media has been talking about the shortage of available licensed CDL holders to drive over-the-road trucks. This topic has also made its way into mainstream media; news outlets are becoming aware there’s a huge problem on the horizon—and that horizon is a lot closer than ever before. According to the American Trucking Assns., there’s a shortage of nearly 48,000 qualified truckers today.
eration nearing retirement age and far more stringent regulations covering their profession, many drivers are opting to retire early. These experienced truckers are saying loud and clear, “We’ve never needed anyone to babysit us. I’ll be damned if I’m going to work in an industry where I have millions of accident-free miles and yet be told I need to change my methods to be safe.” Sadly, this means the best and safest of the old-guard truckers are saying enough is enough.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF THIS TRUCKER SHORTAGE?
2 Generation Xers and Millennials have far more lucrative career opportunities. Many have college degrees.
1
With many of the Boomer gen-
VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.
Those without degrees have jobs that don’t require them to be away from home and family for long periods of time, and they can earn as much or more than what they’d earn as an entry-level trucker. Where’s the benefit of earning what equates to less than minimum wage when the time spent on the road is like being at work 24/7, yet you only earn money when the truck’s rolling? And with pay-by-the mile compensation, the more dangerous the job becomes—ice, snow, heavy rain, congestion, construction, etc.—the less a trucker earns.
3 New regulations along with speed limiters, electronic logging devices, and in-cab cameras are making people think twice about truck driving as a professional career. And those who do consider truck driving as a career go through training that is ofen limited and incomplete. 4
New regulations require a halfhour break within an 11-hour driving period, 10 hours of rest between each 11 hours of driving, and a place to park for 34 consecutive hours to restart your 70-hour clock. Finding a safe place to park with food service and restroom facilities is nearly impossible. The truck parking shortage isn’t new, but it seems to be getting worse. Even finding a place to park, safe or not, can take several hours and many times requires the trucker to exceed his or her hoursof-service limits. Truckers must have those mandated rest periods. And they should be able to access safe, clean, full-service parking to get that rest. So, many times truckers will ask to park at the facility where they are picking up or making deliveries. Unfortunately, many times they are denied a parking space by a shipper or receiver stating they can only park
while unloading and loading. In other words, they need to find somewhere else “to rest.” Many cities and counties have “no trucks allowed” ordinances unless they’re delivering or picking up, and only when they’re loading or unloading. Now add this: Many truckers drive for a carrier where the terminal is hundreds of miles away from where the trucker lives. Most truck stops won’t allow a trucker who lives nearby to park there while at home. Businesses and cities have no truck parking policies, so the trucker is lef with few options.
5
Training for entry-level truckers is rudimentary and incomplete at best. The vast majority of commercial truck driver schools teach their students how to pass the CDL tests but spend little if any time teaching them the skills and knowledge to operate a 70-plus-foot, 40-ton vehicle in the tight, real-world situations truckers face on a daily basis. Once they have the CDL, these entry-level truck drivers are put into a trainer’s truck. The problem is a large majority of trainers have less than a year on the road themselves, and many have yet to experience winter driving conditions—but they’re the ones training the newest truckers. The shortage of drivers is an extremely complex problem with multiple reasons as to why people enter the industry and exit it within a very few months—or don’t consider trucking at all. The carriers, logistics community (read that: shippers, receivers, freight brokers and 3PLs), and governments from federal to state to local must make
VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.
the necessary changes. The problem will not solve itself. Carriers need to devise a pay schedule that compensates truckers for all the time they’re with, or responsible for, a truck and trailer (loaded or empty). They need to be part of the parking solution and push for more reasonable regulations. Train the new trucker with the skills and knowledge to be safe, eficient and prosperous. Respect the truckers they hire. If they want truckers to stay, carriers must make sure they’re earning twice what they’d earn in a construction or related career that permits them to be home every night and on the weekends. The logistics community also needs to become involved in helping find solutions—for the parking problems, for respecting the trucker’s time either by expediting loading and unloading processes, or by ensuring truckers are well-compensated for delays that are out of the driver’s control. Governments need to step up to the plate and re-evaluate the regulations put on the trucking industry and particularly on truck drivers—and bring forth far more stringent and complete training criteria that will produce safe, knowledgeable truckers. To attract quality, intelligent, welltrained safety-minded individuals who will stay with trucking, it all begins with respect. And that respect has to come from every corner of the industry—carriers, the logistics community, and government.

Our analysis is that we don’t have as much stock as other organizations say we do…there are discrepancies.” By itself, this statement might be a major cause for alarm. Over the past year, the price has been as high as
18 AMERICAN TRUCKER / DECEMBER 2015
the International Rubber Study Group that warned of a potential oversupply of NR for the next few years with a surplus approaching 3 million tons in 2020. Back to Ahmad. “The decrease of natural rubber production…particularly the production in Thailand and India, would lead to a possible global natural rubber shortage in 2015,” he said. Since the countries that belong to IRCo produce almost 70% of the global NR supply, this might be seen as a
sign that the current trend towards lower prices is about to change. However, the Assn. of Natural Rubber Producing Countries, which represents about 93% of the global NR supply, forecasted a 3.2% growth in production for 2015 earlier this year. It referenced reduced demand from China and the recovery of the U.S. market as two of the reasons why it expected production to grow. A few months later, it switched its position and called for producers to cut output by 10% next year to reduce global stocks and shore up pricing. For those wondering if NR costs will force tire manufacturers to raise prices again, remember that the art of politics is telling people what they want to hear. There is probably a little bit of truth to each position. You just have to decide which one you are going to believe and then cast your vote.

As two new specs are prepped, truckers will have to make a choice by Kevin Jones, Editor In a highly competitive business where every penny-per-mile in costs adds up quickly, truckers now demand better and better fuel eficiency. And beginning with model-year 2017 heavy-duty trucks, federal regulators will as well. So for the first time in 10 years, OEMs, oil marketers, and standards organizations are coming out with a new category for heavy-duty diesel engine lubricants designed to maximize fuel eficiency from the latest in powertrain technology. The catch is this new category actually will include two lubricant standards, and it will be up to the end users—truck operators and shop personnel—to know and to use the correct engine oil for a variety of equipment. But that decision might not be as simple as just following the engine makers’ recommendations.
recommendations. That’s essentially not much diferent from previous newspec cycles. What’s different this time around is that the latest generation of engines— designed for low-rpm “downspeeding,” among other high-tech touches to maximize fuel eficiency and limit emissions—run hot. To get every last fraction of mpg out of them requires a lubricant with lower viscosity and even a different way for consumers to consider viscosity called high-temperature/high-shear, or HTHS. Oil marketers, based on tests of preapproval formulations, report low-HTHS lubricants provide a 2 to 3% improvement in highway fuel economy. For truck operators with older equipment, however, this PC-11B subcategory, to be named FA-4, likely will not
be the best option. For those older diesels—certainly pre-EPA ’07 models and perhaps even EPA ’10—the new PC-11A standard, CK-4, will be an improved version of, and direct replacement for, the outgoing CJ-4. So far, so good. But an anticipated uncertainty in the marketplace will center first on which lubricants the engine manufacturers will recommend and, second, on maintenance shop management. Will a company with both old and new equipment go along with a double-lubricant standard, at least for several years’ worth of drainage intervals as the older trucks are replaced? Or will they opt to sacrifice some of the performance benefits of FA-4 to keep the engine oil inventory simple? This round of new engine oil standards began with a request from the
And that’s what has everyone’s attention. The good news, as this edition of American Trucker goes to press, is that the involved parties are expected to have settled the performance details and testing procedures, and the oficial ballots are circulating with the aim of a year-end final approval. It will be another 12 months before the current product category, CJ-4, will be phased out. In the meantime, engine oil producers will be perfecting their formulations, testing labs will have their heavy-duty engines humming 24/7, and, ultimately, engine makers will set their oficial

Truck & Engine Manufacturers Assn. (EMA) and its members, explains Roger Gault, EMA vice president for regulatory activities. Specifically, the CK-4 formulation is intended to be “fully backward-compatible,” meet enhanced oxidation requirements, and provide some benefit in aeration control. Essentially, CK-4 will be a new and much improved evolution of the tried-and-true CJ designation. FA-4, however, is “a diferent animal,” Gault points out. The engine makers wanted a standard that will bring lower HTHS oils into the heavy-duty market. Previously, whether in 10W-30 or 5W-30 HD oil, the HTHS measure has been 3.5, and CK-4 will retain that baseline. The FA-4 standard will allow HTHS to go as low as 2.9, but that’s still in line with the lower limit of the SAE 30 grade. “It’s kind of confusing in the marketplace because we’re going to end up with 5W-30s or 10W-30s that fall into both categories and they’re going to be diferent,” Gault adds. “This is new territory for us. Historically, all the heavy-duty diesel engine oils have been in the higher HTHS category. Part of the consumer education process
Shops may need to stock two oil types.
that the industry will be undertaking is to help them understand that there are multiple oils that would carry the same viscosity grade.” On the user side, EMA expects the traditional transition discussions around
which oil spec applies to which truck make and model. “That’s a challenge every time we change a category, but even more so this time,” Gault says, referring to how far back the compatibility will go. “There’s no simple answer, unfortunately.” ‘DONUTS’ MADE FRESH The American Petroleum Institute has been setting fuel and lubricant standards for 65 years, so the process is nothing new. But Kevin Ferrick, manager for API’s engine oil program, concedes this round is a little diferent.
A cyclinder head exam shows an oil’s effectiveness.
22 AMERICAN TRUCKER / DECEMBER 2015
“Every new standard is essentially an improvement on the previous one,” Ferrick says. “Traditionally, the newest oil can be used where the old oil is recommended. For CK-4, that’s more than likely going to be true. For FA-4, it may not be backward-compatible. From an in-cab perspective, we’re going to have to work very hard to make sure that
VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.
fleets, drivers, and owner-operators are aware of the new standard and are very careful to use the oil that’s recommended for their engine. It’s just going to take some work on our part.” Ferrick anticipates that API will add some sort of additional wording to the certification seal, known as the service symbol donut, on each container to identify the oil. API will be running an educational campaign beginning early next year and will encourage the marketing companies to do the same. “Right now everything is on schedule, and we’ll be able to do licensing for Dec. 1, 2016,” Ferrick says. “That’s the first day an oil bottle can show up on the shelf with CK-4 or FA-4 in the API donut.” Still, the transition will take months before CK-4 becomes dominant in the marketplace—which is “pretty normal,” Ferrick notes. “The simplest thing is truck operators really have to follow the manufacturers’ recommendations on this,” he continues. “You may have to have more than one diesel oil in your facility. There are two mantras that we follow: Always use API licensed oil, and don’t deviate from the owner’s manual recommendation.” CHOICE IS GOOD Shawn Whitacre is the Chevron senior staff engineer-engine oil technology for Chevron’s heavy-duty Delo brand engine oil. He’s also the chairman of ASTM’s heavy-duty engine oil classification panel, and he confirms that finalizing the standard is at a pivotal point in terms of crossing all the t’s and dotting the i’s to hit the December target requested by the engine manufacturers.
“At this point, the picture is still a bit unclear as to how far back the OEMs
Bearings are checked for wear.
are going to allow the FA-4 to be used,” Whitacre says. “One thing that is clear is they understand this new grade won’t be practical for the end user if it’s only allowed in new products. There’s got to be some flexibility for fleets to be able to use it in a meaningful fraction of their existing equipment.” Additionally, the new low-viscosity categories will require the most comprehensive testing and evaluation ever developed for heavy-duty engine oils, including nine “fired-engine tests,” with some tests running as long as 500 hours. The goals, along with the “drastic improvements” in thermal stability and fuel economy benefits, include longer oil drain intervals. “Even before the new category was conceived, we were no longer in a one-size-fits-all market. But now we’re seeing not just cold-climate grades but also fuel economy—and you’ve got a variety of OEM-specific requirements here and abroad,” Whitacre says. “And we also have not just diesel engines but natural gas, so we’ve got a whole suite of product oferings. And that’s going to extend further.” The challenge and the opportunity, he continues, is for oil marketers to make
VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.
sure they have the right products for the business needs of the customer. “We’re pretty excited. We enjoy the challenge of these new tighter specifications because we’ve got a comprehensive in-house capability,” Whitacre says. “That’s why we embrace these category upgrades that the OEMs request, and we take a very active role in leading the categories to market. It’s going to be busy the next 14 months.” IN THE LAB Indeed, the engine oil testing labs at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) will be running at 100% capacity for the next two years, according to Martin Thompson, a research engineer in fuels and lubricants. His engine tests are designed “to separate the great from the good oils.”
For PC-11, this typically means running engines under severe, high-torque conditions. The tests don’t come cheap, typically costing $100,000 or more—and there are several tests for each standard. A formulation that passes all of the tests will run up a tab of close to $1.5 million. And some formulations won’t succeed. “If you have to adjust the oil to pass a particular test, you may have to rerun a test you’ve already passed,” he says.
DECEMBER 2015 / AMERICAN TRUCKER 23
OIL
“Running the full battery of tests is no small feat. It’s not a cheap or an easy process to get an API stamp on a bottle of that oil.” Big diesels, anchored to the floor in the testing rooms, are hooked up to more tubes and monitors than any patient in intensive care, as American Trucker witnessed while visiting SwRI’s sprawling San Antonio campus.
A large part of the cost is to pay for fuel. Engines can burn 20 gals./hr., and tests will run 500 hours—three-and-a-half weeks at full throttle, with the dynamometer holding the engine back to simulate the stress of running under load. For the PC-11 specific Volvo/Mack T-13 oxidation test, for instance, researchers monitor and measure “just about every temperature and pressure” of importance on the engine. “We have very tight limits on the controls, trying to keep these tests scientifically repeatable,” Thompson says. The engines are then torn down and rebuilt afer each test, and the parts are examined for wear. ON THE ROAD If you want to know about the real-world efects of a particular lubricant formulation on a truck engine, Shell engineer Howard Hill, the company’s North American field trial coordinator, is the man to see.
Shell has been performing road tests on its FA-4 candidate oils to find out if the low viscosity HTHS formulations designed for tomorrow’s engines will indeed be backward-compatible with older equipment. Earlier this year, Hill walked American Trucker through the teardown of a 2012 Detroit Diesel 15L with more than 800,000 mi. on it. Hill checked the cylinders for carbon buildup, and the cam shafs, rings and rod bearings, connect-

ing rods, and rocker arms for wear and polish—and all showed no more wear than the parts from an engine using a current lubricant. And that’s potentially good news for fleet maintenance managers who would rather not stock two diferent engine oils, explains Matt Urbanak, primary formulator for the Shell Rotella T product line. “You can run all the engine tests you want in the lab, but the real proof of performance is how that oil works out in someone’s actual engine under various operating conditions and locations,” Urbanak says. “You can’t see cleanliness in an oil analysis. You really need to get in there and see what’s happening.” NOT A MAGIC FORMULA ExxonMobil also reports working closely with commercial vehicle manufacturers and engine builders on PC-11 for several years, conduct-
ing extensive laboratory testing and field trials. And, points out Paul Cigala, a commercial vehicle lubricants application engineer, ExxonMobil has already been working with its customers to educate them about the updated specification. “It’s important to note that PC-11 will not afect every business in the same way. In fact, it’s possible some fleets will see only a small impact from PC11,” Cigala says. More importantly, Cigala emphasizes that the impact of the new oil category will hardly move the needle compared to fundamentally sound management by trucking companies. “PC-11 will not change the best practices that help drive the success of truck operators,” Cigala says.

How are maintenance and repairs handled? What do you do in your own shop? For greasing, checking tires, fixing small items, the driver takes the truck home. If a tire needs to be changed, or wheel seal replaced, etc., the truck and trailer comes to the shop. For any major items, the truck or trailer is sent to Freightliner, Stewart & Stevenson’s, Wabash or a facility OTR for repair.
How do you minimize downtime? What are your mileage/time intervals on preventive maintenance? Solving the problem is real hard. The drivers are required to do a pre- and post-inspection every day along with checking out the truck every three hours. It still does not work. When the drivers are back in Colorado, they complain 35 mi. one way is too far for someone to pick them up. That’s why we allow them to keep the truck at home for minor maintenance; otherwise, the truck comes back to the shop. How do you ensure good mileage from tires? I check the air pressure. I also put Equal in all tires for truck and trailers. I try to get drivers to stop and check the tires

Data crunch BY SEAN KILCARR, EDITOR-AT-LARGE FACILITIES CHIEF:
Paul Osland SUPERVISOR:
William Harris COMPANY:
Chicago Public Schools OPERATION:
Warehouse fleet of 23 vehicles
PROBLEM
SOLUTION
When supplies are needed at one of 800 Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the school system’s warehouse operation is on the case, making deliveries from one of several storage facilities located across the Windy City. This is done via one of the 23 vehicles in its fleet: 16 Workhorse Custom Chassis step vans, five International 4300 18-f. box trucks, an International 4300 24f. box truck, or a Ford E-350 van.
Osland’s solution rested in part on equipping all of the warehouse operation’s trucks with Zonar telematics equipment, including its 2020 mobile tablet.
The warehouse operation always got the job done. But CPS wanted to see if the fleet’s efficiency could be fine-tuned to help save the school system a little more money, money that could then be spent on students. “It goes to our operating philosophy here. Every dollar we can save in our operation is one more dollar we can use for student education,” says William Harris, a supervisor within the Student Transportation Services Dept., which oversees the CPS warehouse operation. To find ways to make the school system’s warehouse operation more eficient, Paul Osland, CPS facilities chief, suggested more data analysis. Yet that data also needed to be managed, especially when it came to vehicle maintenance needs.
With the system installed, dispatchers would be able to tap into Zonar’s Ground Trafic Control portal to determine current truck locations while moving drivers over to electronic pretrip inspections, capturing potential maintenance items faster and more accurately. CPS owns all of its vehicles; however, vehicle maintenance is handled by Ryder System. If maintenance is needed during the day, the warehouse group deploys one of its spare trucks or a truck may be asked to pick up an additional route. To ensure that vehicles are taken ofline only for immediate and necessary work, Harris says pretrip inspection data is routed daily through maintenance gatekeeper Miguel Cortes, foreman of motor truck drivers. “Having Miguel as the gatekeeper allows him to properly plan for and schedule vehicles that would need to be out of service,” he notes.
VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.
Harris adds that the use of Zonar’s technology has enhanced the sense of professionalism among the warehouse drivers, as they know issues that may arise with their vehicles will be resolved expediently. “It has also enhanced the driver’s knowledge of their vehicles while inspiring confidence that their work environment is in safe working [order],” Harris adds. The data gained via telematics shows the actual routes driven by drivers, associated fuel consumed, and mileage traveled. This lets warehouse planners see and analyze real-world routes and deviations. It also helps avoid potential delays associated with road construction or congestion. “We are now working to use that GPS information to develop more optimal routing scenarios based around delivery time windows, location, and distance with actual driver information to develop and plan more eficient daily routes,” Harris points out. Potential mileage reductions may also allow for longer maintenance intervals. “Better oversight and communication with drivers results in less time and resources spent due to drivers getting lost, misdirected, or going of route,” he adds.

OIL FILTERS FILTERS PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE in protecting engines. By efectively removing damaging particles and contaminants from engine oil, filters from OEMs and afermarket suppliers employ efective types and sizes of media and are designed to last for recommended and extended oil drain intervals. “Media is the heart of a filter,” says David Cline, global product manager, Oil Filtration Systems at Parker Racor, a filter manufacturer that produces elements using engineered cellulose, glass and fully synthetic media. “Recent results in media development show a 50% increase in efficiency at five microns with a 70% increase in capacity. To meet new engine specifications and in

flow through the element to remove smaller contaminants.
Manufacturers are currently producing several types of engine oil filters, providing fleets with a range of choices depending on their equipment and maintenance practices.
The WIX industrial filter line has more than 8,000 product numbers available for hydraulic and fluid power system applications. The WL10047 is the newest filter from WIX for Navistar trucks with MaxxForce 11, 13 or 15 engines.
According to Donaldson, Synteq media, which is a key component of Donaldson Blue lube filters, is designed to remove more than 90% of contaminants that are 10 microns or larger compared to 50% or less for typical cellulose filters. Cummins Filtration has introduced the LF14000NN lube filter with NanoNet media for Cummins ISX15 engines.
PC-11 oils are driving change to testing protocols preparation for the new PC-11 engine oil change, media is developed and tested at a higher flow rate than present engines use.” “The secret is balancing the characteristics of filter performance,” says Veli Kalayci, director of engine liquid products at Donaldson. “Selecting the right lube filter is a matter of balancing the trade-ofs of eficiency, capacity and restriction, and the secret

Originally developed for Fleetguard fuel filter applications, the synthetic media removes and retains 98.7% of all particles as small as 12 microns, according to the manufacturer. High Velocity Dual-Flow lube filters from Baldwin Filters include spin-on filters that have one inlet and one outlet so oil flows directly to the engine rather than being returned to the sump. According to Baldwin, the design allows a larger portion of oil to
Luber-finer’s line of heavy-duty Time Release Technology (TRT) oil filters provides a controlled release of a concentrated liquid additive to combat harmful acids that build up over time. The newest bypass oil filtration technology from Puradyn Filter Technologies is its Millennium Technology System (MTS) designed to remove solid contaminants to below one micron. Also part of the MTS product family is the Polydry replacement filter element formulated to remove water contamination that occurs through condensation and during the combustion process. The Spinner II centrifuge bypass oil cleaner for diesel engines can be used in addition to full-flow oil filters. Powered by engine oil pressure, the centrifuge operates at speeds in excess of 6,000 rpm to spin contaminants smaller than one micron out of the oil and pack them into a dense cake on the wall of the cleanable centrifuge bowl. A Spinner II centrifuge flows up to two gallons of oil every minute, allowing it to clean the entire sump capacity of a typical heavy-duty engine 10 to 15 times each hour.

PHOTOS SIMPLY DON’T DO A WHIT of justice to the 2003 Western Star tractor owned and operated by William Kolias of New Hampshire, which was among the Readers’ Rigs featured in June. Equipped with a 475-hp. Caterpillar C-15 engine, Kolias’s Western Star is coated in Imron 6000 Garnet Red aircraf paint—which goes for $800/gal.—and decorated with a unique yellow-tinted star-and-banner graphic. Yet it’s how his truck’s color is preserved that makes it one-of-a-kind: Kolias hasn’t waxed his truck in nine years. All he does is wash it of with water, ofen without soap, and cleans a few grime-toughened spots with a bristle brush. The reason why Kolias can do that and make his Western Star shine like new is that his entire rig is sealed under layers of glass, including the truck’s exterior chrome and aluminum components, dashboard gauges, and inside door panels. Yep, that’s right. Glass.
The seven-step process took two workers 33 hours to complete— first by cleaning the entire tractor inside and out, top to bottom, then applying the glass silicate in layers to create an impenetrable bond to the truck’s paint and other components. The interior features captain’s chairs, full leather coverage, LED lighting, and a hardwood floor, among other custom touches.
Kolias, who began driving trucks in 1977, started his own company in partnership with his brother in 1981 hauling mostly lumber, building products, and oversized loads in New England. When his wife retired in 2006, the Koliases began splitting the year between New Hampshire and Florida, where Kolias worked at a local truck driving school two to three days a week. That’s when he added the 38-f. recreational trailer painted to match his one-of-a-kind tractor color scheme.
