Horror vs. reality

I

I’m a big fan of Stephen King and rely heavily on his plethora of work to get through the various road trips I take in any given year. Yet sometimes, oddly enough, those disparate worlds of horror fiction and trucking collide, such as a moment five years ago when, stuck on the tarmac waiting out yet another airline delay, I dug out King’s From a Buick 8 and started to read. The father of one of the main characters, a state trooper, gets killed by a drunk driver after pulling over a truck whose tire Despite Stephen had disintegrated on the road. King wrote that the trucker is riding on “reKing’s opinion, caps” to save money. He insinuates they are cheap substitutes for real tires, as retreads are quite safe. they came apart unexpectedly. A snippet of plot from a work of fiction that gets the reality of retread tires wrong, so who cares? Well, I do. Millions of readers who don’t know a thing about trucking absorb that information and file it away in the back of their minds: “Retreads are bad.” “Mr. King sure didn’t do us any favors,” Harvey Brodsky, director of the Tire Retread Information Bureau, told me when I alerted him to this plot device. “It’s this kind of misinformation that clouds the whole issue of retreads in the minds of the public—and even among truckers.” The reality is this: Retreading tires can save big money without compromising safety one iota. Recaps are critical to the bottom line of any truck operator these days because they cost 30 to 50% less than a new tire. What’s more, tire casings are designed to be retreaded multiple times in order to give fleets the best bang for their buck several times over. And in this economic climate, you can’t afford to leave money on the table, or in a tire scrap yard, any more. AT

What’s old can be new again A

llen Schaeffer, executive director of the nonprofit Diesel Technology Forum, is a big fan of clean-diesel retrofits for certain older trucks because of the low-cost benefits retrofits can deliver. “The difference between old trucks and the newer clean diesel vehicles is like the difference between analog television and digital,” he says. “Today, even if your old television still works, there are a whole lot of other reasons to upgrade to the newer technology. The same is true with clean-diesel vehicles,” Schaeffer notes. “Your old truck may still run, but it may be time to move to a newer truck just the same, for a variety of financial, performance and environmental reasons. We have always tried to define retrofitting as modernizing and upgrading.’’ Available stimulus funds may cover up to 75% of the cost of a new engine, he adds, noting that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides the EPA with $300 million for retrofits. While the money received is about six times the 2008 funding level, it does not even come close to covering requests for funds. According to Schaeffer, the EPA received more than 650 grant applications totaling about $4 billion worth of projects, significantly more than the $300 million in funds available. Even with the available stimulus funds, retrofitting does not make sense for all vehicles. But if the fit is right, Schaeffer says, retrofitting can be the most cost-efficient path to a newer, cleaner, more fuel-efficient truck. “There is definitely a sweet spot, a zone where retrofit makes sense,” Schaeffer says. “It just doesn’t pay

6 American Trucker/ r October 2009

For some truck owners, retrofitting an existing diesel engine is the best route. to try to retrofit some of the oldest trucks with naturally aspirated engines, for example, but if you have a used truck with some life left in it, repowering it can give you better fuel economy, lower maintenance costs, improved performance and reduced emissions as well.” To help fleets and drivers decide if retrofitting equipment makes sense for their operation, Schaeffer offers a short checklist to get the decision process started: W Why are you considering retrofitting your vehicle(s)? Is it a requirement because of where you operate? W Are you hoping to reduce fuel costs or delay buying new equipment a little longer to conserve capital? W Do you want a “greener” fleet? Your reasons for retrofitting will drive your technology choices. W Are you expecting to get financial support for the retrofit from one of the federal- or state-level grant or tax credit programs? Will you qualify for the funding? W What equipment do you have? Will you be able to operate it long

Go to

enough to realize a return on your investment in repowering, or will other components fail before you reach the payback point? W What is the duty cycle for your equipment? Is it home every night or on the road for days at a time? W How do you handle maintenance of the vehicle? The decision to replace or retrofit an older truck remains a voluntary, incentive-based one, except for certain operations in California. There are other forces at work which may change that in the future, according to Schaeffer. For now, however, he sees retrofitting as a great financial solution for the right operations. “The retrofit practice will sunset itself sometime in the future,” Schaeffer notes, “as newer technology vehicles gradually replace the current fleet. Today, every dollar invested in upgrading an older vehicle returns $13 in public health and other benefits. That is one of the most cost-effective strategies I can think of to help reduce emissions and conserve fuel.” —WENDY LEAVITT

he new LvL One 24.5 in. aluminum wheel from Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products offers a load rating that is 450 lbs. higher than alternative steel options, the company said. Weighing 30 lbs. less than a typical steel wheel in the 24.5 x 8.25 in. category, the wheel comes with a 7,850-lb. rating, highest in its class, Alcoa said. Designed for vocational, construction and over-the-road trucks and trailers, the wheel offers additional fuel savings

because of a 540-lb. savings over steel wheels on an 18-wheel truck. It’s designated for use with load range H tires. “Our exclusive dual-side clean buff finish makes [it] much brighter than any competitive aluminum wheel in its class. he California Air Resources Board recently approved ESW Canada’s ThermaCat Active Level III Plus diesel particulate filter (DPF) for retrofit to a wide variety of 1993 through 2006 on-road vehicle models powered by 5- to 10-liter diesel engines. The company said ThermaCat uses a process of regenerating collected particulate matter stored in the DPF in engine operation while lowering backpressure. This maintains optimal emissions reductions in cold or inconsistent duty cycle applications without the need for driver interface, expensive regeneration equipment, vehicle downtime or daily maintenance intervals. ESW Canada added that testing showed the ThermaCat reduces carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in excess of 85%. www.eswcanada.com

Powering up electric vehicles T

he electric vehicle industry is getting a major shot in the arm with $2.4 billion in grants from the U.S. Dept. of Energy. The funding comes from the $787 billion in spending and tax cuts encompassed within the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or stimulus bill, passed by Congress in February. “This marks the single largest investment in advanced battery technology for hybrid and electricdrive vehicles ever made,” said Sec. of Energy Steven Chu. “This will help achieve President Obama’s goal of putting one million plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road by 2015. And, most importantly, it will launch an advanced battery industry in America and make our auto industry cleaner and more competitive.” The grants focus on three key areas: W Roughly $1.5 billion for battery and battery component production, plus battery recycling. W Some $500 million for production of electric drive vehicle components, motors and electronics. W $400 million to fund purchase incentives for

plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles for demonstrations, as well as funds to build recharging infrastructure and workforce training. “This is transformational, and not just in terms of the dollar amount,” Jennifer Watts, spokesperson for the Electric Drive Transportation Assn., told American Trucker. “This level of investment creates a strong policy direction for electric vehicles, making them appeal to investors over both the medium and long term.” It’s also critical that the grants are “across the board” in the electric vehicle industry, funding not just vehicle development but the creation of recharging infrastructure while funding

battery research. “You can’t just have a shot in the arm in one area of this industry,” Watts explained. “It brings everyone to the table—electric car and truck makers, battery makers, etc.” For example, Navistar received $39 million to develop and build all-electric delivery vehicles in partnership with British electric truck maker Modec. The plans call for electric Class 2 and 3 commercial vehicles primarily for urban and suburban pickup and delivery service. Navistar said plans call for building 400 of the allelectric, light-duty trucks in 2010. The company expects that within a couple of years, several thousand such vehicles will be produced annually.

Eyeing the driver

Reward safe drivers

A

G

PS Insight has unveiled an option that enables its customers to automatically receive reports on drivers’ activities across multiple vehicles. These new capabilities allow administrative controls to determine which drivers were assigned to various vehicles historically for reporting purposes. The company said the new functionality also makes it easier for fleets to determine accountability for unreported events such as parking tickets and toll

ment and tire manufacturers wrestle ystem for rolling resistance on passenk tires, it appears that more and more trucking companies are already using fuel-efficient tread designs and rubber compounds. On a major scale, the impact can be measured by the millions of dollars in fuel costs saved even if it tire costs. Tires change, but increases Yes, you read that Low-rolllives are never put correctly. ing resistance tires retreads typiin jeopardy and cally have less tread depth than standard tires and retreads, so they may need to be replaced more often, raising costs. Tire performance is defined by a number of properties. In the past, treadwear was the most important characteristic as fleets looked for long-wearing compounds that measured miles in the hundreds of thousands. Those in the waste-hauling business, for example, needed tires with cut- and chip-resistant rubber that could withstand the constant debris that collects along the curb, so the tire and retread manufacturers developed tires that last two and three times longer than their counterparts of just a decade or two ago. But the name of the game lately appears to be fuel— even though prices are almost half of what they were just a year ago. Savings are savings in this economy, and having a fuel-efficient tire program in place makes perfect sense given the global instability in oil prices. It would be nice to think that fleets are protecting themselves from future oil spikes, but regardless of whether that’s true, having low-rolling resistance rubber on the ground is still a good idea.

18 American Trucker/ r October 2009

Since tire performance is ultimately a trade-off of properties, there have been some questions regarding the stopping ability of fuel-efficient tires and retreads. The truth is that a vehicle with these tires may require more distance to stop than a similar vehicle equipped with tires that feature a high-traction compound and design. But lowrolling resistance tires are just as safe as standard truck tires, so fleets should not be concerned about drivers losing control on wet or dry surfaces. That being said, traction is extremely important in some parts of the country, especially during the winter months when fuel-efficient tires and retreads may not be the answer. One way to reduce rolling resistance is to limit the number of tread blocks that dissipate mud and snow. It won’t be much of a factor in the summer or on dry days, but when the snow hits and the plows don’t make it to the side streets or back roads, drivers may not be fans of the “fuel” tires. Advances in rubber compounding and tread design have revolutionized the concept of application-specific truck tires and retreads. If fleets want deep tread tires that can deliver more than 100,000 mi. and provide excellent traction, then they must understand it’s going to come at the expense of rolling resistance. Likewise, lowrolling resistance tires are not designed to wear slowly or provide maximum traction, so fleets should expect to replace them more often. But the most important thing is that manufacturers never make safety a trade-off. With an unparalleled record of safety and a history of consistent performance improvements, fleets have no reason to doubt the reliability of the modern radial truck tire or retread.

ust like carriers, cargo securement and control system suppliers are reacting to the recession through several strategies. New product offerings, enhancements and close attention to customer needs are helping the industry withstand the economic downturn. The suppliers are working to identify specific needs while providing additional growth opportunities for customers. “During this recession, we are seeing our fleet customers working to try to maximize the efficiency of the equipment they are running,” says Ancra International marketing manager Ed Gohata. “That has increased demand for products like our decking systems, which allow fleets to get more cube by stacking cargo higher in the trailer. “We are also seeing fleets diversifying into new markets,” he notes. “For instance, there has been more interest in our roller floors because they enable fleets to also carry the specialized air freight pallets called igloos.” The end result, Gohata says, is more partnerships with the businesses. “We are finding that we depend upon each other more than ever before,” he adds. Like Ancra, Kinedyne has used the downturn to forge closer ties with customers and make enhancements to its product line. “With fluctuating gas prices and the weak-

ened economy, the transportation industry is facing some tough times on and off the road,” says James Klausmann II, Kinedyne’s executive vp. “That’s why, in 2009, Kinedyne is redoubling its long-standing commitment to exceptional product quality, while also working with our customers to make sure their needs are met.” This spring, Kinedyne unveiled StrapPak, an accessory designed to help secure the loose end of a ratchet strap. The company also redesigned its Series E/A decking beams to include several improvements, such as the inclusion of the KwikLatch trigger release with ergonomic finger tabs on both sides of the beam head to make it easier to release the beam from the track. “We cover everything, even light-duty,” says Roll-Rite spokesperson Cindy Cook, “We are really known for our innovation and vocation-specific product line. We brought out a system of gear motors, for instance, with different torque capabilities, depending upon the length and weight of the tarp you need to handle.” Cook says that Roll-Rite has also seen some market segments expand more than others during the recession. “Our waste market has expanded more rapidly over the past couple of years,” she notes. “Solid waste and scrap have been stronger.” Changes to truck size and weight limits may also trigger a new wave of customer-centered product development in the cargo control industry, experts say.

Maintenance 101

se fleets use it has Because wnership vehicles, to postwithout say. truction cks any, but can longer,” segment oducts at hat fleets are keeping their concrete mixers even longer, from six to eight years, due to the downturn in the market. That’s compared to the three- to fiveyear ownership cycle for most overthe-road operations, he points out. “The dynamic right now is that construction fleets are not working their trucks as hard as they usually do,” adds Melissa Gauger, marketing manager for Navistar’s severe service division. “The trucks may be getting older, but they have fewer miles or hours of operation.” Construction fleets are also parking a lot of excess equipment, giving them access to extra capacity should they need it, which, again, potentially delays purchasing needs, she says. “It’s really going to depend on how they’re treating parked equipment,” Gauger notes. “Are they maintaining it for operation or rather using it for spare parts? The whole issue of getting trucks re-operational will

drive the fleet’s equipment acquisition approach.” “Given the overall market conditions, we believe construction companies will be cautious when deciding to purchase a new truck,” says Maria McCullough, spokeswoman for Freightliner LLC. “We believe construction companies will exercise fiscal prudence and purchase trucks only if necessary, and we anticipate that construction companies will try to do all they can with the trucks that they currently have.” That being said, though, there’s a lot of good “lightly used” equipment on the market today, notes Darry Stuart, president of Wrentham, MA-based DWS Fleet Management Services. In addition, there are many older model new trucks that never left the dealer lot. Both offer good opportunities for construction fleets that need to upgrade equipment yet want to do so as inexpensively as possible. “Many construction firms do project work, so once the project is over, they sell off that equipment,” Stuart points out. “They can’t afford to let [equipment] sit around for three or four months. If you don’t mind having multiple brands of iron in your yard, you can get a good deal.” The same goes for older-model new trucks that arrived at dealer lots but were never sold due to the downturn. “Many have 2007 model trucks that never got sold, so they are marking them down to get rid of them as

some money is better than no money at all,” Stuart says. The key, however, is maintenance, stresses Stuart. Whether a fleet is keeping its current trucks longer, or shopping for used or new equipment, if it doesn’t take care of the trucks properly, it will never get the full value of the vehicles. “You must be smarter on the front end,” he emphasizes. “If you have a truck or buy one with the right specs that can last twelve or more years, you have more options. You can sell at eight to ten years if the market is good, or hold for a few more if you need to. “You need to remember that what you are buying, and then maintaining, is uptime,” Stuart continues. “The less time the truck is in the shop, the better. The way to be competitive today is by managing your vehicle downtime and uptime better than the next guy.”

THE MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST When it comes to truck maintenance, Stuart will tell you that the details remain pretty much the same for almost all commercial vehicles, used and new alike. As a former fleet manager with 37 years of experience handling everything from construction and refuse trucks to long-haul tractor-trailers, Stuart stresses that focusing on several basic areas will help keep trucks up and running for a construction fleet, instead of breaking down at a critical moment. “You use the same basic maintenance management philosophy, altering it slightly depending on the needs of a particular application,” explains Stuart. “Using a truck to haul dirt or concrete is really no different than using a truck to haul freight or whatever. All trucks have batteries, tires, engines and other components that need to be maintained. The use pattern of a truck’s particular application just dictates what components you look at first and how often.”

cover story For that reason, Stuart follows several rough rules of thumb when it comes to monitoring the components a fleet needs to keep on top of day in and day out from a maintenance perspective. In no particular order, they are: Batteries: If the battery charge is low, the truck may not start and so it doesn’t even get out of the gate, he says. Stuart stresses that battery cables have to be disconnected, cleaned and load-tested at each preventive maintenance interval to ensure a full charge is getting through. Low voltage batteries are of particular concern. Though they may get a truck started, they put a lot more pressure on the truck’s alternator and starter, leading to a shorter life cycle. Cooling systems: Truck engines today generate a lot of heat, and that goes double for dump and mixer trucks, as they have additional systems for spinning the mixer drum or raising and lowering the dump bed that puts extra load on the engine. Keeping the cooling system in top shape becomes a priority. Not only can corrosion lead to internal engine issues over time, but leaks in the cooling hoses and the high temperatures generated by the engine and other systems can evaporate any traces of coolant leaks, making a re-

petitive problem that much harder to find. To ward off these problems, regular pressure testing of the cooling system is a must. Tires: This is probably one of the most expensive areas for truck maintenance, especially for construction vehicles, as punctures from debris at a work site can increase tire costs in a hurry. Stuart says the key is to keep tires properly inflated and make sure the front axle is aligned properly to minimize abnormal tire wear. “I stress that you check the front axle ‘toe’ at every PM, because it takes just five minutes to check,” he says. “If the toe is out of alignment, you have to adjust it, because that is what accelerates and wears tires out the most.” U-bolts/fasteners: Stuart is fanati-

cal about tightening chassis and axle U-bolts and wheel/rim fasteners at every PM. “Vocational trucks in particular, such as construction and refuse, endure a lot of vibration from all the maneuvering, turning, heavy loading and unloading they do every day,” he says. “Those U-bolts are holding your truck together, so you have to watch them.” Oil and grease: Stuart is a big believer in buying the best engine oil and component grease available simply because it can help add life to your equipment. “Front ends, clutch linkages, and especially U-joints need the best grease you can buy; know what you are buying and buy quality, not price,” he stresses. “If you don’t grease a U-joint regularly, it’s going to blow out on you. When that happens, you’ll have to tow the vehicle in—and that’s expensive. That’s why paying attention to the small details helps you avoid the big problems in the long run.”

MIXER SPEC’ING TIPS Concrete mixers are highly specialized pieces of equipment and don’t come cheap, which is why the specs really matter for these types of trucks in order to ensure maximum efficiency over the life of the vehicle, according to Brian Lindgren, vocational sales director at Kenworth Truck.

Top quality oil and grease help keep any construction truck in top shape.

cover story Compliance with bridge weight formulas is critical for mixer trucks, new or used.

Even when buying used, paying attention to the specs of the vehicle can save a lot of trouble down the line. A critical consideration right at the start of the purchase process is to know local length and weight regulations, since these will dictate axle spacing needed to maximize payload, according to Lindgren. “Some states require compliance with the Federal Bridge Formula; others don’t,” he says. “A Bridge Formula truck will tend to be longer to spread the weight, and this will define where the steer axle goes and will have an impact on frame dimensions. In most cases, you would spec a booster axle at the rear to increase the weight allowed. You need at least 427 in. from the centerline of the front steer axle to the centerline of the booster axle to be sure to qualify for a 36-ft. bridge.” At the same time, however, the mixer truck must stay within the 40-ft. overall length limit, so the steer axle needs to be as far forward as possible. “Consequently, a 427in. bridge length in a 480-in. overall length leaves only 53 in. for front and rear overhand,” he explains. “The rear mud flap is usually 25 in. from the center of the booster axle, so the steer axle needs to be

within 28 in. of the front bumper. You also must be careful not to spec a permanently mounted tow hook, which extends out front, since it could make you over length.” In states where you don’t need to comply with the Bridge Formula, mixer trucks can be spec’d shorter, making them more maneuverable on job sites; however, that may require the addition of lift axles to carry the extra weight. “Depending on the weight carried by the steer axle and the laws in your state, you may also need to spec wide-based front tires,” adds Lindgren. “In the states where tire footprint is regulated, it’s typically 600 lbs. per inch of tire width. That will require a wide tire such as a 425/65R22.5 size to get to 20,000 lbs. on the two front tires.” Other specs to check include: Frame rails: These are affected by the type of mixer barrel used. If the barrel has a subframe welded to the chassis rails that is approved by the OEM, a single 115/8-in. frame is fine, with a transition plate bolted to the frame at the back of the cab that goes as far forward as possible to ease the stress on the rails. But if the mixer pedestals are mounted directly to the frame rails, that re-

24 American Trucker/ r October 2009

quires an inserted frame of at least 103/4 in. “Remember, it’s not just strength you’re looking for but stiffness, too,” says Lindgren. Traction: Side-to-side differential locks in both rear axles are recommended for traction off the pavement. In areas with sandy soil such as Florida, all-wheel drive— also known as ‘six-by-six’—is the better option. “We’ve seen operators spec’ing a 6x4 configuration with active tire-pressure control systems, allowing the driver to reduce tire pressure when they’re offroad to get the needed traction in the sand,” says Lindgren. Horsepower: Generally, 250 to 320 hp. is plenty for most mixer applications. “Extra horsepower just uses more fuel, puts more strain on the rest of the drivetrain, and adds cost up front,” notes Lindgren. Transmission: ‘Ratio range’ is the key spec here. “You need a low enough gear to inch along at a job site and a high enough top gear to attain decent highway speeds,” says Lindgren. “We’re seeing more automatic transmissions being spec’d as they’re easier on drivers and reduce stress on the drivetrain, and the truck can keep up in traffic much easier. The only downsides are higher up-front costs, and a slight decrease in fuel mileage.” PTO (power take-off ): The PTO must come directly from the engine in order to provide enough power for the mixer system. Whether you use front engine or rear engine PTO depends on the chassis configuration, but Lindgren recommends rear engine PTOs where possible. “With a front engine PTO, the pump is out front in a vulnerable spot. The hydraulic lines have to snake past the engine, and often close to the exhaust, to get back to the mixer drive motor,” he said. “Rear engine PTOs make a cleaner installation.” AT

HEAVY HAULING

Expert movers... Make 1.2-million lb. haul look easy

T

a heavy haul. To move a t weighs more than a fully eing 747 to the oil sands region in Northern Alberta, Premay Equipment LP put together a herd of nine Kenworth C500 tractors—harnessing a total of 4,800 horses under their hoods. The Fort McMurray, AB-based company, whose very descriptive tag line is “Transport Architects,” has been easing big loads down the road since 1964. The subsidiary of Mullen Transportation Inc. specializes in heavy hauls for western Canada’s oil and gas industry. Its hauling and rigging division transports gigantic specialized equipment both over highways and off-road routes to reach production sites including Alberta’s oil sands. The division also hauls equipment to natural gas production fields in western Canada. The shipment that was heavier than a packed jumbo jet consisted of a 13-ft., 8-in. diameter by 110-ft. long reactor weighing an impressive 1.2-million lbs. Its destination was the petroleum-rich oil sands mining area in northern Alberta where it would serve as part of a planned expansion of Suncor Energy’s oil sands operations. “Our Kenworth C500s performed beautifully,” said Brent Harris, president of Premay. Harris joined the company as a driver in 1978 when it

Go to

had just three company trucks and 14 leased truck operators. He explained that the enormous reactor was loaded onto a transport frame with each end of the frame supported by a hydraulic platform trailer. Harris said each trailer was configured at 21 ft. wide by 130 ft. long and had 56 axles—with four tires on each axle, for a total of 448 in all. One tractor in front pulled and four in back pushed the 25-ft. high load at a maximum speed of 12 mph for most of the 50-mi. northbound trip. Alberta Highway 63 from Lynton Siding, which is 12 mi. southeast of Fort McMurray, provided most of the route to the job site at the Athabasca Oil Sands. But it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. To be sure, it wasn’t all flat road. When the parade reached the aptly named Supertest Hill, Premay added another four tractors to the front of the effort. “The nine C500s handled the three-quarters of a mile long climb, with about an 8% grade, without any major issues,” Harris said. “Thanks to the C500s, we were able to keep to our timetable, which is important because the northbound lanes of Highway 63 were closed for safety reasons.” According to Harris, putting together such an impressive heavy-

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

haul solution is all in a day’s work for Premay. What’s more, he pointed out that Premay makes these moves in the cold of winter when roads freeze hard, as attempting to move such giant loads in the spring or summer would damage the highways. To keep all that weight under control and moving efficiently, Premay’s tractors are spec’d with 525-hp. engines driven through Allison automatic transmissions. Four of the nine C500s have tridem drives equipped with 105,000-lb. rear planetary hubreduction axles to provide added traction on icy and snowy roads, Harris noted. Premay operates a total fleet of more than 50 trucks, mostly KWs including T800s, W900s and T660s as well as the massive C500s. “We do most of the routine maintenance on our trucks, and Edmonton Kenworth and GreatWest Kenworth use Kenworth’s PremierCare Connect. That links us directly to their parts department,” Harris noted. Harris pointed out that besides tractors, Premay’s heavy-haul fleet consists of “more than 100 lines of Scheurele Intercombis and 36 lines of Scheurele K100 Series hydraulic platform trailers. He said the modular construction of this equipment allows units to be configured to meet specific job requirements.
