AW19/20 COLOR REPORT

AMIRA HATLANI FASH419:02 PROFESSOR MILLER 15 MARCH 2018

1

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Color is what sets us apart and sets us free. It is poetic, expressive, and intentional, and each season sets the stage for a new family of palettes to explore and inspire. The color stories in this book call upon human needs: the need for freshness, energy, and the desire to feel rooted. It also refers to senses of nostalgia and color as a form of associative memory. Color is what animates us and our wardrobes. Whether you gravitate towards the saturated hues of “Thunder Struck,” or the more classic neutrals in “Painted Hills,” each preference is intentional and meaningful. Color is not just a visual; it’s a feeling. I hope you enjoy my exploration of four color stories for the Autumn/Winter 19/20 season. -Amira Hatlani

WESTERN SKIES This palette evokes freshness, freedom, and youthful energy. Western Skies reminds us of shifting seasons, fresh air, and open skies. This story utilizes muted and subtle tones, but still has a vast range of colors to choose from. Mimosa orange is having an important revival, as customers realize how refreshing and vibrant pastel orange can be. Powder green and frosted blues are having a comeback, as their freshness reminds us that spring is just around the corner. Warm coats and midlength dresses are elevated by this palette, changing the concept that the little black dress is the best option. This palette is caused by customer’s desire for freshness, playfulness, and blooming energy. Pastels have often been referred to as too juvenile or jarring, but customers are getting bored with standard color stories and are ready to take the risk. She is bright and lively, and pastels let her speak that truth. 7

THUNDER STRUCK Contrast and saturation are this palette’s core, a powerhouse of excitement and energy. Colors range from electric yellow to deep fuchsia. Satsuma orange and bright red goji berry relive memories of a 90’s primary color palette, while layering boldly and brightly with each other. Though this bright palette can seem jarring, when done right these colors pair in a daring yet seamless way. People are gravitating towards these colors for Autumn/ Winter to liven up their otherwise dull winter wardrobes. Autumn is no longer just for brick orange and deep reds. Rather, people are ready to incorporate electric hues into their wardrobe no matter the temperature outside. This palette is influenced by our fast changing, ever evolving environment. We are an adventurous and busy generation, and these colors reflect that. When we stay still we are black and white; when we move, we are colorful. 15

PAINTED HILLS This palette draws inspiration from the expressive colors of mother nature, specifically different shades of sand. It is rooted in earth’s vast landscapes, but not limited to plain beige or brown. We see rich coffee tan, dusty rose, and warm sands creating a story that is rich in subtle layers and details. These colors stay true to a classic Autumn/ Winter palette while still throwing in a classic twist. The trusty tan trench coat is still a seasonal staple, but now we’ll see it in calming earthy variations and dusty pinks. These colors will be popular due to our desire to feel rooted and secure. Trends and fashions are constantly changing, but the neutral palette is one the customer can always count on to be classic and fresh. Just as mother nature reminds us to stay rooted, a fresher, lighter neutral palette for Autumn/Winter keeps us grounded and awake. 23

VIOLET FEMME This palette is as indulgent as it is luxurious. These colors stay true to the darker, richer hues associated with Autumn/Winter, embracing all the crisp fall air with a wardobe of jewel tones. Reds range from rich, deep wines to brighter scarlets. Jewelled purples include dusty aubergine and vibrant violet, while emerald green and deep blue ground the palette. While saturated hues can be fun for Autumn/Winter wardrobes, nothing feels quite like the richness associated with these deep jeweled colors. In this story, customers are draped in sumptuous velvet, satin, and wool, and it is true Autumn/Winter perfection. Customers will want these colors as they maintain the desire to feel luxurious. Dark tones and shade calm the mind rather than awakening it. Though these colors are rich and bold, they are still calming to the eye. Customers fill their need to feel warm and embraced, while staying true to the environment cooling down outside. 31
