History The iconic Dr. Martens boot began in 1901 with the Griggs family. They were the heart of the English shoe industry, known for making sturdy & durable work boots in the small town of Wollaston, Northamptonshire, in the English Midlands. Then, in 1945 in post-war Munich, soldier Dr. Klaus Maertens developed a unique air-cushioned sole to help himself recover from a broken foot. The sole was unique from the traditional hardleather sole and far more comfortable. Dr. Maertens began advertising the shoe overseas, when in 1960 the Griggs family saw an ad and wanted in. They made a few changes, added a distinct yellow welt stitch, a unique sole pattern, and branded the shoes as “Airwair.” The boots came complete with a black and yellow heel loop with the slogan “With bouncing soles.” Andand on April 1st 1960, the iconic Dr. Martens eight-holed 1460 boot had arrived.


An Icon is Born Soon, the 1460 boot became an icon of fashion and represented a time of rebellion and self-expresion. The shoe was originally worn by postmen and factory workers, but suddenly, without any intent, the boots were picked up by early multi-cultural, ska-loving skinheads who revolutionized British working class style.

Pete Townshend of The Who was the first high-profile person to wear the shoe, altering the brand’s history and transforming it from a work boot to a subculture essential. By the end of the 1970s, the boot became a symbol of sef-expression and was at the heart of British youth culture.

The boot didn’t really take off in the US until the 1980’s, where it became a style of the grunge and metal movements. In the late 90’s, the brand saw a drastic decline in sales and were nearing bankruptcy. But in 2003, fashion designers began customising the boots and putting them on the runway, bringing about a resurgence of the brand. In 2007 the original Northamptonshire factory reopened and the brand was back on its feet, introducing new styles and patterns.


Growth & Performance Worldwide sales of Dr. Martens grew strongly in the early 2010’s. Over 100 million pairs of Dr. Martens have been sold between 1960 and 2010, and in 2010 the brand offered 250 different models of shoes. Between 2009 and 2011, they opened 14 retail stores in the UK, US, and Hong Kong. In 2011, the brand even launched a line of clothing. In 2013, the company was acquired by European private equity group Permira for £300 million. Following this acquisition, sales performance increased strongly. As of December 2013, global revenue was up 20% versus the prior year. UK retail sales were up 65%, and ecommerce sales were up 36%. As of March 2015, annual sales had increased 13%. The US is the company’s largest market, making up 40% of group revenue. The company anticipates a continued growth in sales for the next year.


Our Concept Dr. Martens’ introduction of clothing in 2011 could have taken off, but the range was only lasted a year. The clothing was a range of essential chambray tunics and plaid flannel shirts, items that felt more Uniqlo than Dr. Martens. They didn’t represent the brand’s customer and spirit of rebellion. Currently, the brand sells a few t-shirts here and there, with some and essential tees and some with the brand logo.

We want to introduce a collection of shirts and hoodies to Dr. Martens for Fall 2017 that fit the customer’s lifestyle, so they can throw on a hoodie with jeans and their favorite Dr. Martens boot and feel great. Our tops will come in a variety of cuts and style, such as bomber jackets and boxy tees, and feature embroideries to give it a heritage and bespoke feel, just as how the brand’s original punk subculture customer would customize their own clothing.


The Dr. Martens customer is individualistic, rebellious, and unique. They are quality oriented and appreciate an iconic brand that reflects a certain lifestyle and heritage. The brand has a broad range of customers, varying from young trend followers to lifelong devotees. In either case, their customers are creative, stylish, and love the brand.

Many of their customers tend to be city dwellers, and like the rest of their wardrobe to be quality crafted. The Dr Martens customer is driven by quality and longevity of the product, not fast fashion trends. They buy the shoes as a staple item and run them into the ground; Dr Martens even have shoes that come with a lifetime guarantee. To emphasize the quality of their products and the nostalgia that comes with it, the brand launched a campaign in 2011 titled “First & Forever.� The campaign focused on the memory of your first pair of Dr. Martens, and invited customers to share their stories on social media. Their customers see their Docs as memories, and know they can rely on the brand.
